We investigate electron-correlation effects in the $g$-factor of the ground state of Li-like ions. Our calculations are performed within the nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics (NRQED) expansion up to two leading orders in the fine-structure constant $α$, $α^2$ and $α^3$. The dependence of the NRQED results on the nuclear charge number $Z$ is studied and the individual $1/Z$-expansion contributions are identified. Combining the obtained data with the results of the all-order (in $Zα$) calculations performed within the $1/Z$ expansion, we derive the unified theoretical predictions for the $g$-factor of light Li-like ions.
A new approach is developed to evaluate contribution of the electron-electron correlations into bremsstrahlung from few-electron ions and atoms. Our approach is based on the explicit formula for the electron density distribution in such systems. We derive the closed analytical formula for the matrix elements which are needed for highly accurate computations of atomic form-factors of two-electron atoms and ions. We also discuss the energy loss due to bremsstrahlung in a plasma which contains multi-charged ions and free electrons. Bremsstrahlung from a high-temperature plasma is considered as we…
The influence of nuclear polarization on the bound-electron $g$ factor in heavy hydrogenlike ions is investigated. Numerical calculations are performed for the K- and L-shell electrons taking into account the dominant virtual nuclear excitations. This determines the ultimate limit for tests of QED utilizing measurements of the bound-electron $g$ factor in highly charged ions.
A novel method is proposed that uses very slow electron elastic collisions with atoms to identify their presence through the observation of tenuously bound (electron impact energy, E<0.1 eV) and weakly bound (E<1 eV) negative ions, formed as Regge resonances during the collisions.
Ionization of light atoms and ions during the nuclear $β^{-}$-decay is considered. To determine the final state probabilities of electron ionization we have developed a procedure based on the natural orbital expansions for the bound state wave functions of all atoms/ions involved in this process.
Hyperfine structures of the triplet $n^3S-$states in the four-electron Be-atom(s) and Be-like ions are considered. It is shown that to determine the hyperfine structure splitting in such atomic systems one needs to know the triplet electron density at the central atomic nucleus $ρ_T(0)$. We have developed the procedure which allows allows one to determine such an electron density $ρ_T(0)$ for arbitrary four-electron atoms and ions.
Recent progress in the study of the photon emission from highly-charged heavy ions is reviewed. These investigations show that high-$Z$ ions provide a unique tool for improving the understanding of the electron-electron and electron-photon interaction in the presence of strong fields. Apart from the bound-state transitions, which are accurately described in the framework of Quantum Electrodynamics, much information has been obtained also from the radiative capture of (quasi-) free electrons by high-$Z$ ions. Many features in the observed spectra hereby confirm the inherently relativistic behav…
Accurate QED calculation of transition probabilities for the low-lying two-electron configurations of multicharged ions is presented. The calculation is performed for the nondegenerate states $(1s2s) 3S1$, $(1s2p_{3/2}) 3P2$ ($M 1$ and $M 2$ transitions, respectively) and for the quasidegenerate states $(1s2p) 1P1$, $(1s2p) 3P1$ ($E 1$ transitions) decaying to the ground state $(1s1s) 1S0$. Two-electron ions with nuclear charge numbers $Z=10-92$ are considered. The line profile approach is employed for the description of the process in multicharged ions within the framework of QED.
We investigated the two-dimensional electron momentum distributions of atomic negative ions in an intense laser field by solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE) and using the first- and 2nd-order strong-field approximations (SFA). We showed that photoelectron energy distributions and low-energy photoelectron momentum spectra predicted from SFA are in reasonable agreement with the solutions from the TDSE. More importantly, we showed that accurate electron-atom elastic scattering cross sections can be retrieved directly from high-energy electron momentum spectra of atomic negative…
We develop {\it ab initio} relativistic QED theory for elastic electron scattering on hydrogen-like highly charged ions for impact energies where, in addition to direct (Coulomb) scattering, the process can also proceed via formation and consequent Auger decay of autoionizing states of the corresponding helium-like ions. Even so the primary goal of the theory is to treat electron scattering on highly charged ions, a comparison with experiment shows that it can also be applied for relatively light ions covering thus a very broad range of the scattering systems. Using the theory we performed cal…
The two-electron self-energy contribution to the ground state energy of heliumlike ions is calculated both for a point nucleus and an extended nucleus in a wide interval of Z. All the two-electron contributions are compiled to obtain most accurate values for the two-electron part of the ground state energy of heliumlike ions in the range Z=20-100. The theoretical value of the ground state energy of heliumlike uranium, based on currently available theory, is evaluated to be -261382.9(8) eV, without higher order one-electron QED corrections.
Mass-dependent and field shift components of the isotopic shift are determined to high accuracy for the ground $1^1S-$states of some light two-electron Li$^{+}$, Be$^{2+}$, B$^{3+}$ and C$^{4+}$ ions. To determine the field components of these isotopic shifts we apply the Racah-Rosental-Breit formula. We also determine the lowest order QED corrections to the isotopic shifts for each of these two-electron ions.
Theoretical studies are presented how the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron in H-like ions in electrostatic storage rings can sensitively be determined. With the proposed experiments a new constraint of about $10^{-29}$ e cm for the electron EDM can be established what is by an order of magnitude more restrictive than the existing bounds. Experiments with H-like ions may provide a possibility to distinguish between the electron EDM effect and the effect of P,T violating interaction between the atomic electron and the nucleus.
A systematic QED treatment of electron correlation is presented for ions along the lithium isoelectronic sequence. We start with the zeroth-order approximation that accounts for a part of the electron-electron interaction by a local model potential introduced into the Dirac equation. The residual electron correlation is treated by perturbation theory. Rigorous QED evaluation is presented for the first two terms of the perturbative expansion; the third-order contribution is calculated within the many-body perturbation theory. We report accurate numerical results for the electronic-structure par…
The influence of hypothetical new interactions beyond the Standard Model on atomic spectra has attracted recent interest. In the present work, interelectronic photon-exchange corrections and radiative quantum electrodynamic corrections to the hypothetical contribution to the energy levels of few-electron ions from a new interaction are calculated. The $1s$, $2s$ and $2p_{1/2}$ ground states of H-like, Li-like and B-like ions are considered, as motivated by proposals to use isotope shift spectroscopy of few-electron ions in order to set stringent constraints on hypothetical new interactions. It…
In this paper we present a simple model for computing single electron exchange between light nuclei. The electronic capture is pictured as a tunnelling process in a model potential. This allows to analytically compute the transmission probability. Some comparisons with data from existing literature are given.
Fully relativistic approach to evaluate the correlation effects in highly charged ions is presented. The interelectronic-interaction contributions of first and second orders in $1/Z$ are treated rigorously within the framework of bound-state quantum electrodynamics, whereas the calculations of the third- and higher-order contributions are based on the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian. The developed approach allows one to deal with single as well as degenerate or quasi-degenerate states. We apply this approach to the calculations of the correlation contributions to the $n=1$ and $n=2$ energy lev…
Two-electron one-photon transitions have been successfully observed for the Ne projectile and Al target at low energy regime. Experimental energy values of two-electron one-photon transitions are compared with previously reported theoretical and experimental values. Ionization cross-section of two-electron one-photon transition is reported.
We consider excitation of highly charged hydrogen-like ions by the impact of equivelocity electrons and protons. The kinetic energy of the protons is more than three orders of magnitude larger than that of the equivelocity electrons. It is shown, however, that despite this fact, the electrons can be much more effective in inducing excitation at collision velocities (slightly) above the threshold for electron impact excitation. The basic reason for this is the strong distortion of the motion of the electron by the attractive field of the nucleus of the highly charged ion.
The polarization properties of the elastic electron scattering on H-like ions are investigated within the framework of the relativistic QED theory. The polarization properties are determined by a combination of relativistic effects and spin exchange between the incident and bound electrons. The scattering of a polarized electron on an initially unpolarized ion is fully described by five parameters. We study these parameters for non-resonant scattering, as well as in the vicinity of LL resonances, where scattering occurs through the formation and subsequent decay of intermediate autoionizing st…
The paper presents the current status of the theory of bound-electron g factor in highly charged ions. The calculations of the relativistic, QED, nuclear recoil, nuclear structure, and interelectronic-interaction corrections to the g factor are reviewed. Special attention is paid to tests of QED effects at strong coupling regime and determinations of the fundamental constants.
Accurate calculations of the binding energies, the hyperfine splitting, the bound-electron g-factor, and the parity nonconservation effects in heavy few-electron ions are considered. The calculations include the relativistic, quantum electrodynamic (QED), electron-correlation, and nuclear effects. The theoretical results are compared with available experimental data. A special attention is focused on tests of QED in a strong Coulomb field.
We present ab initio calculations of the complete gauge-invariant set of two-photon exchange graphs for the $(1s)^2 2p_{3/2}$ electron configuration in Li-like ions. These calculations are an important step towards the precise theoretical determination of the $2p_{3/2}$-$2s$ transition energy in the framework of QED.
We have studied the radiative decay of the 2s state of one-electron and one-muon ions, where the two-photon mechanism plays an important role. Due to the nuclear size corrections the radiative decay of the 2s state in the electron and muon ions is qualitatively different. Based on the accurate relativistic calculation, we introduced a two-parameter approximation, which makes it possible to describe the two-photon angular-differential transition probability for the polarized emitted photons with high accuracy. The emission of photons with linear and circular polarizations was studied separately…
The x-ray energies and transition rates associated with single and double electron radiative transitions from the double K hole state $2s2p$ to the $1s2s$ and $1s^{2}$ configurations of 11 He-like ions ($10\!\leq\!Z\!\leq\!47$) are evaluated using the fully relativistic multi-configuration Dirac-Fock method. An appropriate electron correlation model is constructed with the aid of the active space method, which allows the electron correlation effects to be studied efficiently. The contributions of electron correlation and the Breit interaction to the transition properties are analyzed in detail…
We perform accurate calculations of the dependence of transition frequencies in two valence electron atoms and ions on a variation of the fine structure constant, alpha. The relativistic Hartree-Fock method is used with many-body perturbation theory and configuration interaction methods to calculate transition frequencies. The results are to be used in atomic-clock-type laboratory experiments designed to test whether alpha varies in time.
The parity nonconservation effect on the radiative recombination of electrons with heavy hydrogenlike ions is studied. Calculations are performed for the recombination into the $2^1S_0$ state of helium-like thorium and gadolinium, where, due to the near-degeneracy of the opposite-parity $2^1S_0$ and $2^3P_0$ states, the effect is strongly enhanced. Two scenarios for possible experiments are studied. In the first scenario, the electron beam is assumed to be fully polarized while the H-like ions are unpolarized and the polarization of the emitted photons is not detected. In the second scenario, …
Trapped diatomic molecular ions could prove to be a sensitive probe for a permanent electron electric dipole moment (eEDM). We propose to use a ground or metastable $^3Δ_1$ level, due to its high polarizability and large EDM enhancement factor. Ions allow for simple trapping and long interrogation times, but require a time-varying electric bias field in order to probe the eEDM. We discuss experimental design as well as challenges in performing a precision spectroscopic measurement in rapidly time-varying electric fields.
A fully relativistic approach is presented for the calculation of the bremsstrahlung emitted by an electron scattered off an ionic target. The ionic target is described as a combination of an effective Coulomb potential and a finite-range potential induced by the electronic cloud of the ion. The approach allows us to investigate the influence of the electronic structure of the target on the properties of the emitted radiation. We calculate the double differential cross-section and Stokes parameters of the bremsstrahlung of an electron scattered off uranium ions in different charge states, rang…
Rigorous quantum electrodynamical calculation is presented for energy levels of the 1^1S, 2^1S, 2^3S, 2^1P_1, and 2^3P_{0,1,2} states of helium-like ions with the nuclear charge Z=3...12. The calculational approach accounts for all relativistic, quantum electrodynamical, and recoil effects up to orders mα^6 and m^2/Mα^5, thus advancing the previously reported theory of light helium-like ions by one order in α.
We investigate the parity nonconservation effect in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons on heavy He-like ions, being initially in the ground state. The enhancement of the parity violation is achieved by tuning the energy of the incident electron in resonance with quasidegenerate doubly-excited states of the corresponding Li-like ion. We consider two possible scenarios. In the first one we assume that the polarization of the scattered electron is measured, while in the second one it is not detected.
Recent advances in the production of twisted electron beams with a subnanometer spot size offer unique opportunities to explore the role of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in basic atomic processes. In the present work, we address one of these processes: radiative recombination of twisted electrons with bare ions. Based on the density matrix formalism and the non-relativistic Schrödinger theory, analytical expressions are derived for the angular distribution and the linear polarization of photons emitted due to the capture of twisted electrons into the ground state of (hydrogen-like) ions. We s…
Results of a calculation valid to all orders in the nuclear-strength parameter Zαare presented for the two-loop Lamb shift, notably for the two-loop self-energy correction, for the ground and first excited states of ions with the nuclear charge numbers Z=60-100. A detailed comparison of the all-order calculation with earlier investigations based on an expansion in the parameter Zαis given. The calculation removes the largest theoretical uncertainty for the 2p_j-2s transition energies in heavy Li-like ions and is important for interpretation of experimental data.
A detailed analysis on the effect of spherical impenetrable confinement on the structural properties of two-electron ions in S-states have been done. The energy values of 1sns [n = 2-4] (3Se) states of helium-like ions (Z = 2-5) are estimated within the framework of Ritz variational method by using explicitly correlated Hylleraas-type basis sets. The correlated wave functions used here are consistent with the finite boundary conditions due to spherical confinement. A comparative study between the singlet and triplet states originating from a particular electronic configuration shows incidental…
We propose to use the near-threshold electron scattering data for atoms to guide the reliable experimental determination of their electron affinities (EAs), extracted using the Wigner Threshold Law, from laser photodetachment threshold spectroscopy measurements. Data from the near-threshold electron elastic scattering from W, Te, Rh, Sb and Sn atoms calculated using our complex angular momentum method, wherein is embedded the electron-electron correlations and core polarization interaction, are used as illustrations. We conclude with a remark on the relativistic effects on the EA calculation f…
We show that the spectrum and eigenstates of open-shell multicharged atomic ions near the ionization threshold are chaotic, as a result of extremely high level densities of multiply excited electron states (1000 levels per eV in Au 24+) and a strong configuration mixing. This complexity enables one to use statistical methods to analyze the system. The orbital occupation numbers obey the Fermi-Dirac distribution, and temperature can be introduced. We show that radiative capture of electrons through the multielectron resonant states is strongly enhanced compared to the direct radiative recombina…
The Rayleigh scattering of x-rays by many-electron highly charged ions is studied theoretically. The many-electron perturbation theory, based on a rigorous quantum electrodynamics approach, is developed and implemented for the case of the elastic scattering of (high-energetic) photons by helium-like ion. Using this elaborate approach, we here investigate the many-electron effects beyond the independent-particle approximation (IPA) as conventionally employed for describing the Rayleigh scattering. The total and angle-differential cross sections are evaluated for the x-ray scattering by helium-l…
We discuss an approach to accurate numerical computations of slowly convergent properties in two-electron atoms/ions which include the negatively charged Ps$^{-}$ ($e^{-} e^{+} e^{-}$) and H$^{-}$ ions, He atom and positively charged, helium-like ions from Li$^{+}$ to Ni$^{26+}$. All these ions are considered in their ground $1^{1}S-$state(s). The slowly convergent properties selected in this study include the electron-nulceus $\langle r^{2 k}_{eN} \rangle$ and electron-electron $\langle r^{2 k}_{ee} \rangle$ expectation values for $k$ = 2, 3, 4 and 5.
We have conceived, built and operated a 'half-open' cylindrical Penning trap for the confinement and laser spectroscopy of highly charged ions. This trap allows fluorescence detection employing a solid angle which is about one order of magnitude larger than in conventional cylindrical Penning traps. At the same time, the desired electrostatic and magnetostatic properties of a closed-endcap cylindrical Penning trap are preserved in this congfiuration. We give a detailed account on the design and confinement properties, a characterization of the trap and show first results of light collection wi…
Accurate QED calculations of the interelectron interaction corrections for the $(1s2p)2 {}^1 P_1$, $(1s2p)2 {}^3 P_1$ two-electron configurations for ions with nuclear charge numbers $10\le Z \le 92$ are performed within the line profile approach. Total energies of these configurations are evaluated. Employing the fully relativistic treatment based on the {$j$--$j$} coupling scheme these energy levels become quasi-degenerate in the region $Z\le 40$. To treat such states within the framework of QED we utilize the line profile approach. The calculations are performed within the Coulomb gauge.
We present a theoretical investigation of the radiative recombination of twisted Bessel electrons with initially hydrogen-like (finally helium-like) heavy ions. In our study, we focus especially on the linear polarization of x-ray photons emitted in the electron capture into the ground $1s^2_{1/2}$ ionic state. Particular emphasis is placed on the question of how this polarization is affected if incident hydrogen-like ions are themselves spin-polarized. To explore such a "polarization transfer" we apply the density matrix theory and derive the Stokes parameters of recombination x-rays for the …
We have developed one electron detachment theory from a closed-shell atomic configuration in the relativistic Fock-space coupled-cluster ansatz. Using this method, we determine sensitivity coefficients to the variation of the fine structure constant in the first three important low-lying transitions of the astrophysically interesting highly charged Mn IX, Fe X, Co XI and Ni XII ions. The potential of this method has been assessed by evaluating the detachment energies of the removed electrons and determining lifetimes of the atomic states in the above ions. To account the sensitivity of the hig…
A low-energy, compact and superconducting electron beam ion trap (the Shanghai-Wuhan EBIT or SW-EBIT) for extraction of highly charged ions is presented. The magnetic field in the central drift tube of the SW-EBIT is approximately 0.21 T produced by a pair of high-temperature superconducting coils. The electron-beam energy of the SW-EBIT is in the range of 30-4000 eV, and the maximum electron-beam current is up to 9 mA. Acting as a source of highly charged ions, the ion-beam optics for extraction is integrated, including an ion extractor and an einzel lens. A Wien filter is then used to measur…
Accurate QED evaluations of the one- and two-photon interelectron interaction for low lying two- and three-electron configurations for ions with nuclear charge numbers $60\le Z \le 93$ are performed. The three-photon interaction is also partly taken into account. The Coulomb gauge is employed. The results are compared with available experimental data and with different calculations. A detailed investigation of the behaviour of the energy levels of the configurations $1s_{1/2}2s_{1/2} {}^1 S_0$, $1s_{1/2}2p_{1/2} {}^3 P_0$ near the crossing points Z=64 and Z=92 is carried out. The crossing poin…
In this work, the controversy between the interpretations of recent measurements on dense aluminum plasma created with Linac coherent light sources (LCLS) X-ray free electron laser (FEL) and Orion laser has been addressed. In both kind of experiments, helium-like and hydrogen-like spectral lines are used for plasma diagnostics . However, there exist no precise theoretical calculations for He-like ions within dense plasma environment. The strong need for an accurate theoretical estimates for spectral properties of He-like ions in strongly coupled plasma environment leads us to perform ab initio…
The angular distribution of the emitted electrons, following the two--photon ionization of the hydrogen--like ions, is studied within the framework of second order perturbation theory \textit{and} the Dirac equation. Using a density matrix approach, we have investigated the effects which arise from the polarization of the incoming light as well as from the higher multipoles in the expansion of the electron--photon interaction. For medium-- and high--Z ions, in particular, the non--dipole contributions give rise to a significant change in the angular distribution of the emitted electrons, if co…
We calculate the electron recombination rates with target ions W$^{q+}$, $q = 18$ -- $25$, as functions of electron energy and electron temperature (i.e. the rates integrated over the Maxwellian velocity distribution). Comparison with available experimental data for W$^{18+}$, W$^{19+}$, and W$^{20+}$ is used as a test of our calculations. Our predictions for W$^{21+}$, W$^{22+}$, W$^{23+}$, W$^{24+}$, and W$^{25+}$ (where the experimental data are not available) may be used for plasma modelling in thermonuclear reactors. The results for the temperature dependent rates for each ion are fitted …
It is shown that recently measured cross sections for double ionization of negative ions ($H^-, O^-$, and $C^-$) possess a universal shape when plotted in suitable dimensionless units. The shape can be represented with a simple analytical function, following the same principles as it has been done in establishing a universal shape function for single ionization [Rost and Pattard 1997 Phys. Rev. A {\bf 55} R5]. Thereby, it is demonstrated that direct double ionization dominates the cross section for the targets considered.

We report on the observation of a strong perturbation of the electron gas induced by 20 MeV/u U$^{91+}$ ions and 13 MeV/u Pb$^{81+}$ ions channeled in silicon crystals. This collective response (wake effect) in-duces a shift of the continuum energy level by more than 100 eV, which is observed by means of Radiative Electron Capture into the K and L-shells of the projectiles. We also observe an increase of the REC probability by 20-50% relative to the probability in a non-perturbed electron gas. The energy shift is in agreement with calculations using the linear response theory, whereas the loca…
Ionization of highly charged relativistic ions by neutral atoms and ions is considered. Numerical results of recently developed computer codes based on the relativistic Born and the equivalent-photon approximations are presented. The ionization of the outer shells dominate. For the outer projectile electron shells, which give the main contribution to the process, the non-relativistic Schrödinger wave functions can be used. The formulae for the non-relativistic reduction of the Dirac matrix-elements are obtained for ionization of electrons with arbitrary quantum numbers $n$ and $\ell$.
Calculational results are presented for the fine-structure splitting of the 2^3P state of helium and helium-like ions with the nuclear charge Z up to 10. Theoretical predictions are in agreement with the latest experimental results for the helium fine-structure intervals as well as with the most of the experimental data available for light helium-like ions. Comparing the theoretical value of the 2^3P_0-2^3P_1 interval in helium with the experimental result [T. Zelevinsky et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 203001 (2005)], we determine the value of the fine-structure constant αwith an accuracy of 31 pa…

The fully relativistic Multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) method taking into account both the correlations within the n=4 complex and the quantum electrodynamic (QED) effects have been used in the calculations. MCDFGME code is used to calculate electron impact excitation cross sections for the 4s24p2-4s4p3 and 4s24p2-4s24p4d transitions with plane-wave Born approximation. The results of Pr XXV…
The rigorous QED evaluation of the one- and two-photon exchange corrections to the ground-state hyperfine splitting in Li-like ions is presented for the wide range of nuclear charge number $Z= 7 - 82$. The calculations are carried out in the framework of the extended Furry picture, i.e., with inclusion of the effective local screening potential in the zeroth-order approximation. The interelectronic-interaction contributions of the third and higher orders are taken into account in the framework of the Breit approximation employing the recursive perturbation theory. In comparison to the previous…
We experimentally re-evaluate the fine structure of Sn$^{11+...14+}$ ions. These ions are essential in bright extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) plasma-light sources for next-generation nanolithography, but their complex electronic structure is an open challenge for both theory and experiment. We combine optical spectroscopy of magnetic dipole $M1$ transitions, in a wavelength range covering 260\,nm to 780\,nm, with charge-state selective ionization in an electron beam ion trap. Our measurements confirm the predictive power of \emph{ab initio} calculations based on Fock space coupled cluster theory. We…
In this paper we study theoretically the process of electron capture between one-optical-electron atoms (e.g. hydrogenlike or alkali atoms) and ions at low-to-medium impact velocities (v/v_e <= 1) working on a modification of an already developed classical Over Barrier Model (OBM) [V. Ostrovsky, J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. {\bf 28} 3901 (1995)], which allows to give a semianalytical formula for the cross sections. The model is discussed and then applied to a number of test cases including experimental data as well as data coming from other sophisticated numerical simulations. It is found t…
Absolute two-photon detachment cross sections and photoelectron angular distribution are calculated for halogen negative ions within lowest-order perturbation theory. The Dyson equation method is used to obtain the outer np ground-state wave functions with proper asymptotic behavior exp (-k r), corresponding to correct (experimental) binding energies E=k^2/2. The latter is crucial for obtaining correct absolute values of the multiphoton cross sections (Gribakin and Kuchiev 1997 Phys. Rev.A55 3760). Comparisons with previous calculations and experimental data are performed.
