Chiral magnets with topologically nontrivial spin order such as Skyrmions have generated enormous interest in both fundamental and applied sciences. We report broadband microwave spectroscopy performed on the insulating chiral ferrimagnet Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$. For the damping of magnetization dynamics we find a remarkably small Gilbert damping parameter of about $1\times10^{-4}$ at 5 K. This value is only a factor of 4 larger than the one reported for the best insulating ferrimagnet yttrium iron garnet. We detect a series of sharp resonances and attribute them to confined spin waves in the mm-sized samples. Considering the small damping, insulating chiral magnets turn out to be promising candidates when exploring non-collinear spin structures for high frequency applications.
We present long-wavelength neutron diffraction data measured on both single crystal and polycrystalline samples of the skyrmion host material Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$. We observe magnetic satellites around the $(0\bar{1}1)$ diffraction peak not accessible to other techniques, and distinguish helical from conical spin textures in reciprocal space. We confirm successive transitions from helical to conical to field polarised ordered spin textures as the external magnetic field is increased. The formation of a skyrmion lattice with propagation vectors perpendicular to the field direction is observed in …
Linear dichroism -- the polarization dependent absorption of electromagnetic waves -- is routinely exploited in applications as diverse as structure determination of DNA or polarization filters in optical technologies. Here filamentary absorbers with a large length-to-width ratio are a prerequisite. For magnetization dynamics in the few GHz frequency regime strictly linear dichroism was not observed for more than eight decades. Here, we show that the bulk chiral magnet Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ exhibits linearly polarized magnetization dynamics at an unexpectedly small frequency of about 2 GHz. Unlik…
Clusters of single spins form the relevant spin entities in the formation of long-range magnetic order in spin cluster Mott insulators. Such type of spin order bears resemblance to molecular crystals, and we therefore may expect a prototypical spin wave spectrum which can be divided into low-energy external and high-energy internal cluster spin wave modes. Here, we study high-energy spin cluster excitations in the spin cluster Mott insulator Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ by means of spontaneous Raman scattering. Multiple high-energy optical magnon modes are observed, of which the Raman-activity is shown …
The manifestation of skyrmions in the Mott-insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ originates from a delicate balance between magnetic and electronic energy scales. As a result of these intertwined couplings, the two symmetry-inequivalent magnetic ions, Cu-I and Cu-II, bond into a spin S=1 entangled tetrahedron. However, conceptualizing the unconventional properties of this material and the energy of the competing interactions is a challenging task due the complexity of this system. Here we combine X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering to uncover the electronic and magnetic ex…
The strongly correlated cuprate Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ has recently been identified as the first insulating system exhibiting a skyrmion lattice phase. Using a microscopic multi-boson theory for its magnetic ground state and excitations, we establish the presence of two distinct types of modes: a low energy manifold that includes a gapless Goldstone mode and a set of weakly dispersive high-energy magnons. These spectral features are the most direct signatures of the fact that the essential magnetic building blocks of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ are not individual Cu spins, but rather weakly-coupled Cu$_4$ tetrahed…
The cubic chiral helimagnets with the $P2_13$ space group represent a group of compounds in which the stable skyrmion-lattice state is experimentally observed. The key parameter that controls the energy landscape of such systems and determines the emergence of a topologically nontrivial magnetic structures is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Chemical substitution is recognized as a convenient instrument to tune the DMI in real materials and has been successfully utilized in studies of a number of chiral magnets, such as MnSi, FeGe, MnGe, and others. In our study, we applied small-a…
Chiral magnetic textures with non-trivial topology are known as skyrmions, and due to their unique properties they are promising in novel magnetic storage applications. While the electric manipulation of either isolated skyrmions or a whole skyrmion lattice have been intensively reported, the electric effects on skyrmion clusters remain scarce. In magnetoelectric compound Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, a skyrmion cluster can be created near the helical-skyrmion phase boundary. Here, we report the in situ electric field writing/erasing of skyrmions in such a skyrmion cluster. Our real space/time image data ob…
Magnetic skyrmions are localized nanometric spin textures with quantized winding numbers as the topological invariant. Rapidly increasing attention has been paid to the investigations of skyrmions since their experimental discovery in 2009, due both to the fundamental properties and the promising potential in spintronics based applications. However, controlled creation of skyrmions remains a pivotal challenge towards technological applications. Here, we report that skyrmions can be created locally by electric field in the magnetoelectric helimagnet Cu$\mathsf{_2}$OSeO$\mathsf{_3}$. Using Loren…
Skyrmions are nanometric spin whirls that can be stabilized in magnets lacking inversion symmetry. The properties of isolated skyrmions embedded in a ferromagnetic background have been intensively studied. We show that single skyrmions and clusters of skyrmions can also form in the helical phase and investigate theoretically their energetics and dynamics. The helical background provides natural one-dimensional channels along which a skyrmion can move rapidly. In contrast to skyrmions in ferromagnets, the skymion-skyrmion interaction has a strong attractive component and thus skyrmions tend to …
Cu$_4$ triplet clusters form the relevant spin entity for the formation of long-range magnetic order in the cluster magnet Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Using time-resolved Raman spectroscopy, we probed photoinduced spin and lattice dynamics in this Mott insulator. Multiple ps-decade spin-lattice relaxation dynamics is observed, evidencing a separation of the order parameter dynamics into disordering of long-range and internal spin cluster order. Our study exemplifies the double order parameter dynamics of generalized molecular crystals of charge, spin, and orbital nature.
In this work, we present a comprehensive study of the low energy optical magnetic response of the skyrmionic Mott insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ via high resolution time-domain THz spectroscopy. In zero field, a new magnetic excitation not predicted by spin-wave theory with frequency $f$ = 2.03 THz is observed and shown, with accompanying time-of-flight neutron scattering experiments, to be a zone folded magnon from the $\mathrm{R}$ to $\mathrmΓ$ points of the Brillouin zone. Highly sensitive polarimetry experiments performed in weak magnetic fields, $μ_0$H $<$ 200 mT, observe Faraday and Kerr rotat…

We report studies of thermal conductivity as functions of magnetic field and temperature in the helimagnetic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ that reveal novel features of the spin-phase transitions as probed by magnon heat conduction. The tilted conical spiral and low-temperature skyrmion phases, recently identified in small-angle neutron scattering studies, are clearly identified by sharp signatures in the magnon thermal conductivity. Magnon scattering associated with the presence of domain boundaries in the tilted conical phase and regions of skyrmion and conical-phase coexistence are identified.
We report a comprehensive neutron scattering study of low energy magnetic excitations in the breathing pyrochlore helimagnetic $\text{Cu}_2\text{OSeO}_3$. Fully documenting the four lowest energy magnetic modes that leave the ferrimagnetic configuration of the "strong tetrahedra" intact ($|\hbarω|<13$ meV), we find gapless quadratic dispersion at the $Γ$ point for energies above 0.2 meV, two doublets separated by 1.6(2) meV at the $R$ point, and a bounded continuum at the $X$ point. Our constrained rigid spin cluster model relates these features to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions and t…
Resonant elastic soft x-ray magnetic scattering (XRMS) is a powerful tool to explore long-periodic spin textures in single crystals. However, due to the limited momentum transfer range imposed by long wavelengths of photons in the soft x-ray region, Bragg diffraction is restricted to crystals with the large lattice parameters. Alternatively, small angle x-ray scattering has been involved in the soft energy x-ray range which, however, brings in difficulties with the sample preparation that involves focused ion beam milling to thin down the crystal to below a few hundred nm thickness. We show ho…
We have used inelastic neutron scattering to measure the magnetic excitation spectrum along the high-symmetry directions of the first Brillouin zone of the magnetic skyrmion hosting compound Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. The majority of our scattering data are consistent with the expectations of a recently proposed model for the magnetic excitations in Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, and we report best-fit parameters for the dominant exchange interactions. Important differences exist, however, between our experimental findings and the model expectations. These include the identification of two energy scales that likely ari…
We present a theoretical examination of the magneto-electric response in the recently discovered multiferroic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Combining Monte Carlo simulation and Ginzburg-Landau analysis we predict the response in each of the magnetic phases, including helical, conical, ferromagnetic and Skyrmion crystal phases, both for thin film and bulk systems. A common feature for all non-collinear phases is that the magneto-electric susceptibility increases linearly with the applied magnetic field. Being both calculable and measurable, the magneto-electric susceptibility can serve as a new pow…
The unusual magnetic and electronic ground states of 5d iridates has been shown to be driven by intrinsically enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The influence of appreciable but reduced SOC in creating the manifested magnetic insulating states in 4d oxides is less clear, with one hurdle being the existence of such compounds. Here we present experimental and theoretical results on Sr$_4$RhO$_6$ that reveal SOC dominated behavior. Neutron measurements show the octahedra are both spatially separated and locally ideal, making the electronic ground state susceptible to alterations by SOC. Magnetic…
In this paper we have created a strain driven single crystal like ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) state in a PLD grown thin film of low doped LCMO(X = 0.15)on NGO(100) substrate and make a thorough study of strain effects on the electric and magnetic transport of this film. We have studied and compared the FMI state, ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC), ferromagnetic insulating temperature (TFMI) and the resistivity of the film in details with bulk single crystals of X=0.18 to 0.22 doping region. We have found that TFMI and the localisation length of the carriers are increased and there i…
Effects of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and magnetic field on excitonic insulating (EI) states are investigated. We introduce the two-orbital Hubbard model with the crystalline field splitting, which is a minimal model for discussing the exciton condensation in strongly correlated electron systems, and analyze its effective Hamiltonian in the strong correlation limit by using the mean-field theory. In the absence of the SOC and magnetic field, the ground state changes from the nonmagnetic band-insulating state to the EI state by increasing the Hund coupling. In an applied magnetic field, the …
We investigate the structural, magnetic and spin-state transitions, and magnetocaloric properties of Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CoNbO$_6$ ($x=$ 0--1) double perovskites. The structural transition from tetragonal to monoclinic phase at $x$ $\geqslant$ 0.6, and an evolution of (101)/(103) superlattice reflections and Raman active modes indicate the enhancement in the B-site ordering with $x$. The magnetic susceptibility data reveal the transition from weak ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering for $x$ $\geqslant$ 0.6 with T$_{\rm N}$$\approx$9--15~K. Interestingly, the La substitution driv…
We report a significant decrease in the low-temperature resistance induced by the application of an electric current on the $ab$-plane in the paramagnetic insulating (PMI) state of (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$. A colossal electroresistance effect attaining -95% is observed at lower temperatures. A colossal magnetoresistive step appears near 5T at low temperatures below 10K, accompanied by an ultrasharp width of the insulator-metal transition. Injection of higher currents to the crystal causes a disappearance of the steplike transition. These findings have a close rel…
We study the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of single-layer 1TNbSe$_2$ from first principles. Within the generalized gradient approximation, the 1T polytype is highly unstable with respect to the 2H. The DFT+U method improves the stability of the 1T phase, explaining its detection in experiments. A charge density wave occurs with a $\sqrt{13}\times\sqrt{13}~R30^{\circ}$ periodicity, in agreement with STM data. At $U=0$, the David-star reconstruction displays a flat band below the Fermi level with a marked d$_{z^2-r^2}$ orbital character of the central Nb. The Hubbard interac…
Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets have been a fertile playground for the discovery and exploration of physical phenomena and new physics. In this Letter, we report the observation of an anomalous thermal Hall effect (THE) with \k{appa}_xy ~ 1x10^(-2) W K^(-1) m^(-1) in an insulating van der Waals ferromagnet VI3. The thermal Hall signal persists in the absence of an external magnetic field and flips sign upon the switching of the magnetization. In combination with theoretical calculations, we show that VI3 exhibits a dual nature of the THE, i.e., dominated by topological magnons…
The skyrmion is a topologically stable spin texture, in which the spin direction wraps a sphere. The topological nature gives rise to emergent electromagnetic phenomena such as topological Hall effect. Recently, the crystallization of nanoscale skyrmions was observed in chiral helimagnets with use of the neutron diffraction and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. The skyrmions are quite mobile under electric current density as low as $\sim$ 10$^6$ A/m$^2$, and, in some cases, stable up to near room temperature. These features suggest that the skyrmions may work as a magnetic stable-varia…
Femtosecond (fs)-resolved simultaneous measurements of charge and spin dynamics reveal the coexistence of two different quasi-particle excitations in colossal magneto-resistive (CMR) manganites, with {\em fs} and {\em ps} relaxation times respectively. Their populations reverse size above a {\em photoexcitation-intensity-threshold} coinciding with a "sudden" antiferro-to-ferromagnetic switching during $<$100 fs laser pulses. We present evidence that fast, metallic, mobile quasi--electrons dressed by {\em quantum spin fluctuations} coexist with slow, localized, polaronic charge carriers in non-…
Conventionally ordered magnets possess bosonic elementary excitations, called magnons. By contrast, no magnetic insulators in more than one dimension are known whose excitations are not bosons but fermions. Theoretically, some quantum spin liquids (QSLs) -- new topological phases which can occur when quantum fluctuations preclude an ordered state -- are known to exhibit Majorana fermions as quasiparticles arising from fractionalization of spins. Alas, despite much searching, their experimental observation remains elusive. Here, we show that fermionic excitations are remarkably directly evident…
We show that continuous and spin-lattice models of chiral ferro- and antiferromagnets provide the existence of an infinite number of stable soliton solutions of any integer topological charge. A detailed description of the morphology of new skyrmions and the corresponding energy dependencies are provided. The considered model is general, and is expected to predict a plethora of particle-like states which may occur in various chiral magnets including atomic layers, e.g., PdFe/Ir(111), rhombohedral GaV$_4$S$_8$ semiconductor, B20-type alloys as Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge, Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si, Fe$_{1-x}$C…
The recent discovery of skyrmions in Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ has established a new platform to create and manipulate skyrmionic spin textures. We use high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy combining a terahertz free electron laser and pulsed magnetic fields up to 64 T to probe and quantify its microscopic spin-spin interactions. Besides providing direct access to the long-wavelength Goldstone mode, this technique probes also the high-energy part of the excitation spectrum which is inaccessible by standard low-frequency ESR. Fitting the behavior of the observed modes in magnetic field to …
We investigate the magnetic properties of the series Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4 with neutron, resonant x-ray and magnetization measurements. The results indicate an evolution and coexistence of magnetic structures via a spin flop transition from ab-plane to c-axis collinear order as the 5d Ir4+ ions are replaced with an increasing concentration of 4d Ru4+ ions. The magnetic structures within the ordered regime of the phase diagram (x<0.3) are reported. Despite the changes in magnetic structure no alteration of the Jeff=1/2 ground state is observed. The behavior of Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4 is consistent with electroni…
Although abundant research has focused recently on the quantum criticality of itinerant magnets, critical phenomena of insulating magnets in the vicinity of critical endpoints (CEP's) have rarely been revealed. Here we observe an emergent CEP at 2.05 T and 2.2 K with a suppressed thermal conductivity and concomitant strong critical fluctuations evident via a divergent magnetic susceptibility (e.g., chi''(2.05 T, 2.2 K)/chi''(3 T, 2.2 K)=23,500 %, comparable to the critical opalescence in water) in the hexagonal insulating antiferromagnet HoMnO3.
The normalized in-plane magnetoconductivity of the dilute strongly interacting system of electrons in silicon MOSFET's scales with $B/T$ for low densities in the insulating phase. Pronounced deviations occur at higher metallic-like densities, where a new energy scale $k_B Δ$ emerges which is not associated with either magnetic field or thermal effects. $B/T$ scaling of the magnetoconductivity breaks down at the density $n_0$ where the energy scale $k_B Δ$ vanishes, near or at the critical density $n_c$ for the apparent metal-insulator transition. The different behavior of the magnetoconductivi…
We study the double-exchange model at half-filling with competing superexchange interactions on a triangular lattice, combining exact diagonalization and Monte-Carlo methods. We find that in between the expected itinerant ferromagnetic and $120^{\circ}$ Yafet-Kittel phases a robust scalar-chiral, insulating spin state emerges. At finite temperatures the ferromagnet - scalar-chiral quantum critical point is characterized by anomalous bad-metal behavior in charge transport as observed in frustrated itinerant magnets R$_2$Mo$_{2}$O$_7$.
We report a strong effect of interface-induced magnetization on the transport properties of magnetic tunnel junctions consisting of ferromagnetic manganite La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ and insulating cuprate PrBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$. Contrary to the typically observed steady increase of the tunnel magnetoresistance with decreasing temperature, this system exhibits a sudden anomalous decrease at low temperatures. Interestingly, this anomalous behavior can be attributed to the competition between the positive spin polarization of the manganite contacts and the negative spin-filter effect from …
The current theoretical and experimental situations are reviewed for low-dimensional insulating systems with a low magnetic transition temperature TM and pronounced short-range magnetic order above this temperature. Both the standard and self-consistent spin-wave theories are shown to be insufficient to quantitatively describe the experimental data on these systems. Field-theoretical approaches taking into account the contribution of the spin-fluctuation excitations (neglected in the spin-wave theories) to the thermodynamic properties of ferro- and antiferromagnets are discussed.
We derive a spin-orbital model for insulating LaMnO_3 which fulfills the SU(2) symmetry of S=2 spins at Mn^{3+} ions. It includes the complete e_g and t_{2g} superexchange which follows from a realistic Mn^{2+} multiplet structure in cubic site symmetry, and the Jahn-Teller induced orbital interactions. We show that the magnetic ordering observed in LaMnO_3 is stabilized by a purely electronic mechanism due to the e_g-superexchange alone, and provide for the first time a quantitative explanation of the observed transition temperature and the anisotropic exchange interactions.
We examine two-spin (2S) and cyclic four-spin (4S) magnetic interactions in insulating ladder and two-dimensional (2D) cuprates. By a comparison of eigenstates between d-p and Heisenberg models, we evaluate magnitudes of these interactions. We find that the 4S interaction is $\sim$10% of nearest neighboring 2S interaction, and a diagonal 2S interaction is considerably small. The 4S interaction for a ladder cuprate is larger than that for 2D one, and plays an important role in the low-energy excitation. The Heisenberg ladder with the obtained 2S and 4S interactions reproduces very well the expe…
The magnetic structure of Ca$_2$MnReO$_6$ double perovskite is investigated by neutron powder diffraction and bulk magnetization, showing dominant non-collinear Mn magnetic moments [$4.35(7)$ $μ_B$] that are orthogonally aligned with the small Re moments [$0.22(4)$ $μ_B$]. $Ab$-initio electronic structure calculations show that the strong spin-orbit coupling for Re $5d$ electrons combined with a relatively modest on-site Coulomb repulsion ($U_{eff}^{Re} \gtrsim 0.6$ eV) is sufficient to render this material insulating. This is a rare example of spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator outside the re…
We study field induced quantum phase in weakly-coupled ferromagnetic frustrated chain LiCuVO$_4$ by neutron diffraction technique. A new incommensurate magnetic peak is observed at $H \ge 8.5$ T. The field dependent propagation vector is identified with the spin density wave correlation in the theoretically predicted magnetic quadrupole order. Quantum fluctuation, geometrical frustration, and interchain interaction induce the exotic spin density wave long-range order in the insulating magnet.
Cation displacements, oxygen octahedral tilts, and magnetism of epitaxial, ferrimagnetic, insulating GdTiO3 films sandwiched between cubic SrTiO3 layers are studied using scanning transmission electron microscopy and magnetization measurements. With decreasing GdTiO3 film thickness, structural (GdFeO3-type) distortions are reduced, concomitant with a reduction in the Curie temperature. Ferromagnetism persists to smaller deviations from the cubic perovskite structure than is the case for the bulk rare earth titanates. The results indicate that the FM ground state is controlled by the narrow ban…
The magnetic interactions in one-dimensional, two-dimensional (2D) and ladder cuprates are evaluated systematically by using small Cu-O clusters. We find that the superexchange interaction J between nearest neighbor Cu spins strongly depends on Cu-O structure through the Madelung potential, and in 2D and ladder cuprates there is a four-spin interaction Jcyc, with magnitude of 10% of J. We show that Jcyc has a strong influence on the magnetic excitation in the high-energy region of 2D cuprates.
Small angle neutron scattering experiments were performed on a bulk single crystal of chiral-lattice multiferroic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. In the absence of an external magnetic field, helical spin order with magnetic modulation vector $q \parallel <001>$ was identified. When a magnetic field is applied, a triple-$q$ magnetic structure emerges normal to the field in the A-phase just below the magnetic ordering temperature $T_c$, which suggests the formation of a triangular lattice of skyrmions. Notably, the favorable $q$-direction in the A-phase changes from $q \parallel <110>$ to $q \paralle…
A spin-tunnel-junction based on manganites, with La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) as ferromagnetic metallic electrodes and the undoped parent compound LaMnO$_3$ (LMO) as insulating barrier, is here theoretically discussed using double exchange model Hamiltonians and numerical techniques. For an even number of LMO layers, the ground state is shown to have anti-parallel LSMO magnetic moments. This highly resistive, but fragile, state is easily destabilized by small magnetic fields, which orient the LSMO moments in the direction of the field. The magnetoresistance associated with this transition is…
Quantum entanglement effects between the electronic spin and charge degrees of freedom are examined in an organic molecular solid, termed a dimer-Mott insulating system, in which molecular dimers are arranged in a crystal as fundamental units. A low energy effective model includes an antisymmetric exchange interaction, as one of the dominant magnetic interactions. This interaction favors a 90 degree spin configuration, and competes with the Heisenberg-type exchange interaction. Stabilities of the magnetic ordered phases are examined by using the spin-wave theory, as well as the Schwinger-boson…
Magnetic correlations in all four phases of pure and doped vanadium sesquioxide V_2O_3 have been examined by magnetic thermal neutron scattering. While the antiferromagnetic insulator can be accounted for by a Heisenberg localized spin model, the long range order in the antiferromagnetic metal is an incommensurate spin-density-wave, resulting from a Fermi surface nesting instability. Spin dynamics in the strongly correlated metal are dominated by spin fluctuations in the Stoner electron-hole continuum. Furthermore, our results in metallic V_2O_3 represent an unprecedentedly complete characteri…
The intermediate-valence compound SmB6 is a well-known Kondo insulator, in which hybridization of itinerant 5d electrons with localized 4f electrons leads to a transition from metallic to insulating behavior at low temperatures. Recent studies suggest that SmB6 is a topological insulator, with topological metallic surface states emerging from a fully insulating hybridized bulk band structure. Here we locally probe the bulk magnetic properties of pure and 0.5 % Fe-doped SmB6 by muon spin rotation/relaxation methods. Below 6 K the Fe impurity induces simultaneous changes in the bulk local magnet…
Extending a Boltzmann-Langevin theory to magnons, we show a universality of current-noise suppression in diffusive systems against the difference of quantum-statistical properties of bosons and fermions. To this end, starting from a quantum kinetic equation for magnons subjected to thermal gradient in dilute impurities, we derive a bosonic counterpart of the semiclassical Boltzmann-Langevin equation for electrons and evaluate a magnonic current-noise in the diffusive insulating magnet. We theoretically discover that compared with a Poissonian shot noise of magnons in an insulating ferromagneti…
We investigate the necessary conditions for the emergence of complex, noncoplanar magnetic configurations in a Kondo lattice model with classical local moments on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice and their evolution in an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that topologically nontrivial spin textures, including a new canted flux state, with nonzero scalar chirality arise dynamically from realistic short-range interactions. Our results establish that a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction is necessary for the emergence of these novel magnetic states when the …
We develop a theory of the correlated magnetically ordered insulating state at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator. We demonstrate that the gapped spin-polarized state, induced by the application of the magnetic field $B$, is naturally facilitated by electron interactions, which drive the critical easy-plane ferromagnetic correlations in the helical liquid. As the key manifestation, the gap $\De$ in the spectrum of collective excitations, which carry both spin and charge, is enhanced and exhibits a scaling dependence $\De \propto B^{1/(2-K)}$, controlled by the Luttinger liquid…
Using a novel technique, we make quantitative measurements of the spin polarization of dilute (3.4 to 6.8*10^{10} cm^{-2}) GaAs (311)A two-dimensional holes as a function of an in-plane magnetic field. As the field is increased the system gradually becomes spin polarized, with the degree of spin polarization depending on the orientation of the field relative to the crystal axes. Moreover, the behavior of the system turns from metallic to insulating \textit{before} it is fully spin polarized. The minority-spin population at the transition is ~8*10^{9} cm^{-2}, close to the density below which t…
Identifying and characterizing the parent phases of iron-based superconductors is an important step towards understanding the mechanism for their high temperature superconductivity. We present an investigation into the magnetic interactions in the Mott insulator La2O2Fe2OSe2. This iron oxyselenide adopts a 2-k magnetic structure with low levels of magnetic frustration. This magnetic ground state is found to be dominated by next-nearest neighbor interactions J2 and J2' and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the Fe2+ site, leading to 2D-Ising-like spin S=2 fluctuations. In contrast to calculat…
We investigate competing insulating phases in nearly metallic zigzag carbon nanotubes, under conditions where an applied magnetic flux approximately closes the single particle gap in one valley. Recent experiments have shown that an energy gap persists throughout magnetic field sweeps where the single-particle picture predicts that the gap should close and reopen. Using a bosonic low-energy effective theory to describe the interplay between electron-electron interactions, spin-orbit coupling, and magnetic field, we obtain a phase diagram consisting of several competing insulating phases that c…
The resistivities of the dilute, strongly-interacting 2D electron systems in the insulating phase of a silicon MOSFET are the same for unpolarized electrons in the absence of magnetic field and for electrons that are fully spin polarized by the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. In both cases the resistivity obeys Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping $ρ(T) = ρ_0 \mbox{exp}[(T_{ES}/T)^{1/2}]$, with $T_{ES}$ and $1/ρ_0$ mapping onto each other if one applies a shift of the critical density $n_c$ reported earlier. With and withoug magnetic field, the parameters $T_{ES}$ and $1/ρ_0 = σ_0$ …
We have studied the magnetoresistance in a high-mobility Si inversion layer down to low electron concentrations at which the longitudinal resistivity $ρ_{xx}$ has an activated temperature dependence. The angle of the magnetic field was controlled so as to study the orbital effect proportional to the perpendicular component $B_\perp$ for various total strengths $B_{\rm tot}$. A dip in $ρ_{xx}$, which corresponds to the Landau level filling factor of $ν=4$, survives even for high resistivity of $ρ_{xx} \sim 10^8 Ω$ at $T= 150 {\rm mK}$. The linear $B_{\rm tot}$-dependence of the value of $B_\per…
Nambu-Goldstone theorem provides gapless modes to both relativistic and nonrelativistic systems. The Nambu-Goldstone bosons in insulating magnets are called magnons or spin-waves and play a key role in magnetization transport. We review here our past works on magnetization transport in insulating magnets and also add new insights, with a particular focus on magnon transport. We summarize in detail the magnon counterparts of electron transport, such as the Wiedemann-Franz law, the Onsager reciprocal relation between the Seebeck and Peltier coefficients, the Hall effects, the superconducting sta…
