We present an imaging and spectral analysis of the nuclear region of the ULIRG merger Arp 220, using deep \textit{Chandra}-ACIS observations summing up to \(\sim 300\mbox{ ks}\). Narrow-band imaging with sub-pixel resolution of the innermost nuclear region reveals two distinct Fe-K emitting sources, coincident with the infrared and radio nuclear clusters. These sources are separated by 1' (\(\sim 380\) pc). The X-ray emission is extended and elongated in the eastern nucleus, like the disk emission observed in millimeter radio images, suggesting starburst dominance in this region. We estimate Fe-K equivalent width \(\gtrsim 1\) keV for both sources, and observed 2-10 keV luminosities \(\sim 2\times{10}^{40}\mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\) (W) and \(\sim 3 \times {10}^{40}\mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\) (E). In the 6-7 keV band the emission from these regions is dominated by the 6.7 keV Fe \textsc{xxv} line, suggesting contribution from collisionally ionized gas. The thermal energy content of this gas is consistent with kinetic energy injection in the interstellar medium by Type II SNe. However, nuclear winds from hidden AGN (\(\varv\sim 2000 \mbox{ km}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\)) cannot be excluded. The \(3σ\) upper limits on the neutral Fe-K\(α\) flux of the nuclear regions correspond to intrinsic AGN 2-10 keV luminosities \(< 1\times {10}^{42}\mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\) (W) and \(< 0.4\times {10}^{42}\mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\) (E). For typical AGN SEDs the bolometric luminosities are \(< 3\times {10}^{43}\mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\) (W) and \(< 8\times {10}^{43}\mbox{ erg}\mbox{ s}^{-1}\) (E), and black hole masses \(<1\times{10}^5 M_{\astrosun}\) (W) and \(< 5\times{10}^5 M_{\astrosun}\) (E) for Eddington limited AGNs with a standard 10\% efficiency.
Previous studies have shown significant differences in the enhancement of the star-formation rate (SFR) and the star-formation efficiency (SFE=SFR/M_mol) between spiral-spiral and spiral-elliptical mergers. In order to shed light on the physical mechanism of these differences, we present NOEMA observations of the molecular gas distribution and kinematics (linear resolutions of ~ 2kpc) in two representative close major-merger star-forming pairs: the spiral-elliptical pair Arp142 and the spiral-spiral pair Arp238. The CO in Arp142 is widely distributed over a highly distorted disk without any nu…
The ultra-luminous infrared galaxy Arp2 20 is a late-stage merger with several tidal structures in the outskirts and two very compact, dusty nuclei that show evidence for extreme star formation and host at least one AGN. New and archival high-resolution images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope provide a state-of-the-art view of the structures, dust, and stellar clusters in Arp 220. We find that ~90% of the Halpha emission arises from a shock-ionized bubble emanating from the AGN in the western nucleus, while the nuclear disks dominate the Pbeta emission. Four very young (~3-6 Myr) but lower …
We study for the first time the low-frequency ($\sim$150 MHz) radio brightness distribution of Arp~299 at subarcsecond resolution, tracing in both compact and extended emission regions the local spectral energy distribution (SED) in order to characterize the dominant emission and absorption processes. We analysed the spatially resolved emission of Arp 299 revealed by 150 MHz international baseline Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) and 1.4, 5.0, and 8.4 GHz Very Large Array (VLA) observations. We present the first subarcsecond (0.4"$\sim$100~pc) image of the whole Arp~299 system at 150~MHz. The high …
We present the line observations in our ALMA imaging spectral scan toward three deeply buried nuclei in NGC 4418 and Arp 220. We cover 67 GHz in $f_{\rm rest}$=215-697 GHz at about 0.2$"$ (30, 80 pc) resolution. All the nuclei show dense line forests; we report our initial line identification using 55 species. The line velocities generally indicate gas rotation around each nucleus, tracing nuclear disks of $\sim$100 pc sizes. We confirmed the counter-rotation of the nuclear disks in Arp 220 and that of the nuclear disk and the galactic disk in NGC 4418. While the brightest lines exceed 100 K, …
ALMA cycle 3 observations of $^{12}$CO $ J = 3\rightarrow2$, $^{13}$CO $J = 4\rightarrow 3$, SiO J = $8 \rightarrow 7$, and HCN J = $ 5 \rightarrow 4$ are presented. Significant extended emission is detected in $^{12}$CO J $ = 3\rightarrow2$ with a morphology that is indicative of m = 2 tidal features, suggesting gas inflow. In addition, outflow for both nuclei are found in the $^{12}$CO J $ = 3\rightarrow2$. Significant SiO absorption is detected in the western nucleus. HCN that is morphologically distinct from CO is detected in both nuclei. These observations are compared to non-LTE radiativ…
The detection with of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) of dust-rich high redshift galaxies whose cold dust emission is spatially disconnected from the ultraviolet emission bears a challenge for modelling their spectral energy distributions (SED) with codes based on an energy budget between the stellar and dust components. We test the validity of energy balance modelling on a nearby resolved galaxy with vastly different ultraviolet and infrared spatial distributions and infer what information can be reliably retrieved from the analysis of the full spectral energy distribution. We use 1…
We present an analysis of the 4-2600 $μ$m spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the west and east nuclei and the diffuse infrared (IR) region of the merger-driven starburst Arp 220. We examine several possible source morphologies and dust temperature distributions using a mixture of silicate and carbonaceous grains. From fits to the SEDs we derive dust masses, temperatures, luminosities, and dust inferred gas masses. We show that the west and east nuclei are powered by central sources deeply enshrouded behind $\sim 10^{26}$ cm$^{-2}$ column densities of hydrogen with an exponential density d…
Galaxy mergers are central to our understanding of galaxy formation, especially within the context of hierarchical models. Besides having a large impact on the star formation history, mergers are also able to influence gas motions at the centre of galaxies and trigger an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). In this paper, we present a case study of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2992, which together with NGC 2993 forms the early-stage merger system Arp 245. Using Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) integral field unit (IFU) data from the inner 1.1 kpc of the galaxy we were able to spatially resolve the …
Star-forming galaxies are huge reservoirs of cosmic rays (CRs) and these CRs convert a significant fraction of their energy into $γ$-rays by colliding with the interstellar medium (ISM). Several nearby star-forming galaxies have been detected in GeV-TeV $γ$-rays. It is also found that the $γ$-ray luminosities in 0.1-100 GeV correlate well with indicators of star formation rates of the galaxies, such as the total infrared (IR) luminosity. In this paper, we report a systematic search for possible $γ$-ray emission from galaxies in the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxies Sample, using 11.4 years of $γ$-r…
Dense gas is the key for understanding star formation in galaxies. We present high resolution ($\sim3''$) observations of CN 2-1 and CS 5-4 as dense gas tracers toward Arp 299, a mid stage major merger of galaxies, with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). The spatial distribution of CN 2-1 and CS 5-4 are generally consistent with each other, as well as HCN 1-0 in literature. However, different line ratios of CS 5-4 and CN 2-1 are found in A, B, and C regions, with highest value in B. Dense gas fraction decreases from IC 694 (A), to NGC 3690 (B) and the overlap starburst region (C and C$'$), which i…
We observed with ALMA three deeply buried nuclei in two galaxies, NGC 4418 and Arp 220, at $\sim$0.2$''$ resolution over a total bandwidth of 67 GHz in $f_{\rm rest}$ = 215 - 697 GHz. Here we (1) introduce our program, (2) describe our data reduction method for wide-band, high-resolution imaging spectroscopy, (3) analyze in visibilities the compact nuclei with line forests, (4) develop a continuum-based estimation method of dust opacity and gas column density in heavily obscured nuclei, which uses the BGN (buried galactic nuclei) model and is sensitive to $\log(N_{\rm H_2}/{\rm cm}^{-2}) \sim …

We present $\sim$0."3 (114 pc) resolution maps of [CI] $^{3}P_{1}$-$^{3}P_{0}$ (hereafter [CI] (1-0)) and $^{12}$CO (1-0) obtained toward Arp 220 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The overall distribution of the [CI] (1-0) emission is consistent with the CO (1-0). While the [CI] (1-0) and CO (1-0) luminosities of the system follow the empirical linear relation for the unresolved ULIRG sample, we find a sublinear relation between [CI] (1-0) and CO (1-0) using the spatially-resolved data. We measure the [CI] (1-0)/CO (1-0) luminosity ratio per pixel in star-forming environme…
We studied the apparent galaxy pair NGC 1232 / NGC 1232A with Chandra, looking for evidence of interactions and collisions. We report that there is no cloud of diffuse emission in NGC 1232, contrary to previous claims in the literature. Instead, we find that the small "companion" galaxy NGC 1232A contains three ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with peak 0.3-10 keV luminosities above 10^{40} erg/s (assuming a cosmological distance of 93 Mpc for this galaxy). For its mass, morphology, metal abundance and bright ULX population, NGC 1232A is analogous to the more nearby late-type spiral NGC 1313…
