Motivated by an anomaly observed in the decay of an excited state of Beryllium by the Atomki collaboration, we study an extension of the Standard Model with a gauged $U(1)'$ symmetry in presence of a 2-Higgs Doublet Model structure of the Higgs sector. We show that this scenario complies with a variety of experimental results and is able to explain the potential presence of a resonant spin-1 gauge boson, $Z'$, with a mass of 17 MeV in the Atomki experimental data, for appropriate choices of $U(1)'$ charges and Yukawa interactions.
We investigate a two Higgs doublet model with extra flavour depending $U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry where $Z'$ boson interactions can explain the Atomki anomaly by choosing appropriate charge assignment for the SM fermions. For parameter region explaining the Atomki anomaly we obtain light scalar boson with $\mathcal{O}(10)$ GeV mass, and we explore scalar sector to search for allowed parameter space. We then discuss anomalous magnetic dipole moment of muon and lepton flavour violating processes induced by Yukawa couplings of our model.
The Atomki collaboration has reported that unexpected excesses have been observed in the rare decays of Beryllium nucleus. It is claimed that such excesses can suggest the existence of a new boson, called $X$, with the mass of about $17$ MeV. To solve the Atomki anomaly, we consider a model with gauged $U(1)_R$ symmetry and identify the new gauge boson with the $X$ boson. We also introduce two $SU(2)$ doublet Higgs bosons and one singlet Higgs boson, and discuss a very stringent constraint from neutrino-electron scattering. It is found that the $U(1)_R$ charges of the doublet scalars are deter…
An anomaly observed recently in the $^8$Be nuclear transition by the Atomki collaboration hints at a weakly-coupled, light new gauge boson with a mass of about $17$ MeV. In this paper, we propose that this new gauge boson comes from a short-distance structure of the spacetime, rather than from an extension of the Standard Model through adding an extra $\mathrm{U}(1)$ gauge symmetry. The dominant contribution to the relevant matrix element of the $^8$Be nuclear transition is given by the axial couplings. In order to account for the $^8$Be anomaly and satisfy the current experimental constraints…
We consider several extensions of the Standard Model (SM) which can explain the anomalies observed by the Atomki collaboration in the decay of excited states of Beryllium via a new boson with a mass around 17 MeV yielding $e^+e^-$ pairs. We show how both spin-0 and 1 solutions are possible and describe the Beyond the SM (BSM) scenarios that can accommodate these. They include BSM frameworks with either an enlarged Higgs, or gauge sector, or both.
We consider an extension of the Standard Model with an extra gauged $U(1)'$ symmetry in presence of a 2-Higgs Doublet Model structure of the scalar sector. We show that this scenario is able to explain the anomaly observed by the Atomki collaboration in the decay of an excited state of Beryllium via a light spin-1 $Z'$ with a mass of 17 MeV.
Using the $e^+e^-$ pair spectrometer at the 5 MV Van de Graaff accelerator at the Institute for Nuclear Research, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (ATOMKI), Krasznahorkay et al. have claimed a 6.8$σ$ excess at high $e^+e^-$ opening angles in the internal pair creation isoscalar transition $^8\mathrm{Be}(18.15)\to\,^8\mathrm{Be}\,e^+e^-$. A hypothetical gauge boson with the mass circa $17$ MeV, "X17", has been proposed as an explanation for the excess. We show that the observed experimental structure can be reproduced within the Standard Model by adding the full set of second-order corrections and…
We estimate the values of Yukawa couplings of a light pseudoscalar A with a mass of about 17 MeV, which would explain the $^8Be$ anomaly observed in the Atomki pair spectrometer experiment. The resulting couplings of A to up and down type quarks are about 0.3 times the coupling of the standard Higgs boson. Then constraints from K and B decays require that loop contributions to flavour changing vertices cancel at least at the 10% level. Constraints from beam dump experiments require the coupling of A to electrons to be larger than about 4 times the coupling of the standard Higgs boson, leading …
In this proceedings, we discuss a light (17 MeV) $Z'$ solution to the anomaly observed in the decay of Beryllium-8 by the Atomki collaboration. We detail an anomaly free model with minimal particle content which can satisfy all other experimental constraints with gauge couplings $\mathcal{O}(10^{-4})$.
Rare leptonic kaon and pion decays $K^+(π^+) \to μ^+\, ν_μ\, e^+ e^-$ can be used to probe a dark photon of mass ${\cal O}(10)$~MeV, with the background coming from the mediation of a virtual photon. This is most relevant for the 16.7-MeV dark photon proposed to explain a 6.8$σ$ anomaly recently observed in $^8$Be transitions by the Atomki Collaboration. We evaluate the reach of future experiments for different scenarios of how the dark photon couples with the standard model particles, and show that a great portion of the preferred 16.7-MeV dark photon parameter space can be decisively probed.…
In 2016, the ATOMKI collaboration announced [PRL {\bf 116}, 042501 (2016)] observing an unexpected enhancement of the $e^+-e^-$ pair production signal in one of the $^8$Be nuclear transitions induced by an incident proton beam on a $^7$Li target. Many beyond-standard-model physics explanations have subsequently been proposed. One popular theory is that the anomaly is caused by the creation of a protophobic vector boson ($X$) with a mass around 17 MeV [e.g., PRL\ {\bf 117}, 071803 (2016)] in the nuclear transition. We study this hypothesis by deriving an isospin relation between photon and $X$ …
Recent anomalies in $^8$Be and $^4$He nuclear decays can be explained by postulating a fifth force mediated by a new boson $X$. The distributions of both transitions are consistent with the same $X$ mass, 17 MeV, providing kinematic evidence for a single new particle explanation. In this work, we examine whether the new results also provide dynamical evidence for a new particle explanation, that is, whether the observed decay rates of both anomalies can be described by a single hypothesis for the $X$ boson's interactions. We consider the observed $^8$Be and $^4$He excited nuclei, as well as a …
Massive vector-like electroweak doublets are generic in many extensions of the standard model. Even though one member of the doublet is necessarily electrically charged these particles are not easily detected in collider experiments. The neutral and charged states within the doublet are split by electroweak symmetry breaking. In the absence of mixing with other states, the radiatively generated splitting is in the range 200 - 350 MeV for m > mZ/2. The charged state decays to the neutral one with an O(cm) decay length, predominantly by emission of a soft charged pion. The best possibility to de…
We propose a 3+1 Higgs Doublet Model based on the $Δ(27)$ family symmetry supplemented by several auxiliary cyclic symmetries leading to viable Yukawa textures for the Standard Model fermions, consistent with the observed pattern of fermion masses and mixings. The charged fermion mass hierarchy and the quark mixing pattern is generated by the spontaneous breaking of the discrete symmetries due to flavons that act as Froggatt-Nielsen fields. The tiny neutrino masses arise from a radiative seesaw mechanism at one loop level, thanks to a preserved $Z_2^{\left( 1\right)}$ discrete symmetry, which …
We consider two possible sources of the $T$-violating muon transverse polarization in the process $K^+ \to μ^+ νγ$: electromagnetic final state interaction in the SM and contribution due to charged-Higgs exchange diagrams in the framework of the Weinberg three doublets model. It is shown that at the one-loop level of the SM the muon transverse polarization, $P_T^{SM}$, varies within $(0.0 ÷1.1 \cdot 10^{-3})$ in the Dalitz plot region. Averaged value of the muon polarization, $<P^{SM}_T>$, in the kinematic region of $E_γ\geq 20$ MeV is equal to $4.76\cdot 10^{-4}$. In the case of the model wit…
We consider a version of Left-Right Symmetric Model in which the scalar sector consists of a Higgs bidoublet ($Φ$) with $B-L=0$, Higgs doublets ($H_{L,R}$) with $B-L=1$ and a charged scalar ($δ^+$) with $B-L=2$ leading to radiatively generated Majorana masses for neutrinos and thereby, leads to new physics contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$). We show that such a novel framework can be embedded in a non-SUSY $SO(10)$ GUT leading to successful gauge coupling unification at around $10^{16}$ GeV with the scale of left-right symmetry breaking around $10^{10}$ GeV. The model can…
The interaction and propagation of anti-B mesons with light mesons, N and Delta baryons is studied within a unitarized approach based on effective models that are compatible with chiral and heavy-quark symmetries. We find several heavy-quark spin doublets in the open-bottom sectors, where anti-B and anti-B* mesons are present. In the meson sector we find several resonant states, among them, a B0 and a B1 with masses 5530 MeV and 5579 MeV as well as Bs0* and Bs1* narrow states at 5748 MeV and 5799 MeV, respectively. They form two doublets with no experimental identification yet, the first one b…
Two recently discovered excited charm baryons are studied within the framework of Heavy Hadron Chiral Perturbation Theory. We interpret these new baryons which lie $308 \MeV$ and $340 \MeV$ above the $Λ_c$ as $I=0$ members of a P-wave spin doublet. Differential and total decay rates for their double pion transitions down to the $Λ_c$ ground state are calculated. Estimates for their radiative decay rates are also discussed. We find that the experimentally determined characteristics of the $Λ_c^*$ baryons may be simply understood in the effective theory.
psi and Upsilon decays may be used to search for light neutral spin-1 or spin-0 bosons associated with a broken extra-U(1) symmetry, local or global, acting axially on quarks and leptons, as may be present in supersymmetric theories with a lambda H_1 H_2 S superpotential term. Recent data on Upsilon --> gamma + invisible neutral constrain an axial, pseudoscalar or scalar coupling to b to f_bA < 4 10^-7 m_U(MeV)/ sqrt B_inv, f_bP < 4 10^-3/ sqrt B_inv or f_bS < 6 10^-3/ sqrt B_inv, respectively. This also constrains, from universality properties, couplings to electrons to f_eA < 4 10^-7 m_U(MeV…
We construct nuclear matter based on an extended parity doublet model including four light nucleons $N(939)$, $N(1440)$, $N(1535)$, and $N(1650)$. We exclude some values of the chiral invariant masses by requiring the saturation properties of normal nuclear matter; saturation density, binding energy, incompressibility, and symmetry energy. We find further constraint to the chiral invariant masses from the tidal deformability determined by the observation of the gravitational waves from neutron star merger GW170817. Our result shows that the chiral invariant masses are larger than about $600\,$…
A new Majoron model is presented within the framework of the seesaw mechanism. Its Higgs sector consists of only doublet representations and the lepton-number violation takes place at the same scale of the electroweak symmetry breaking. This model is different from the singlet- or triplet-Majoron model in several respects: it is free from the \(ρ\)-parameter constraint and it provides moderately fast neutrino decay, but the constraint from the stellar cooling of red giants is satisfied only with an imposed approximate symmetry. A \(τ\) neutrino as heavy as 10 MeV is possible in this model desp…
In a recently proposed neutrinophilic two-Higgs doublet model, the low-energy (sub-MeV) effective theory consists of a real scalar with a vev of O(0.1) eV and three Dirac neutrinos. Other models could lead to the same low energy theory. In this Brief Report, we study constraints on the parameter space of the model, including vacuum stability, unitarity, perturbativity and the effects on the invisible Z width. Interestingly, we find that all neutrinos become massless at temperatures above approximately 1000 K, but can find no phenomenological effects of this finding. The most direct test of the…
The standard electroweak interaction is here re-assessed to accommodate two different situations in Particle Physics. The first one is a $Z'$-model at the TeV-scale physics. The second one tackles the recent discussion of a possible fifth force mediated by a $17$-MeV X-boson associated with an electron-positron emission in the transition of an excited 8-Beryllium to its ground state. The anomaly-free model that provides these two scenarios is based on an $SU_{L}(2) \times U_{R}(1)_{J} \times U(1)_{K}$-symmetry. It yields a new massive neutral boson, an exotic massive neutral fermion, right-neu…
After the recent discovery of a Higgs-like boson particle at the CERN LHC-collider, it becomes more necessary than ever to prepare ourselves for identifying its standard or non-standard nature. The Electroweak parameter Delta r relating the values of the gauge boson masses [MW,MZ] and the Fermi constant [G_F] is the traditional observable encoding high precision information of the electroweak physics at the quantum level. In this work we present a complete quantitative study of Delta r in the framework of the general (unconstrained) Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM). First of all we report on a s…
We study masses and decay widths of positive and negative parity nucleons using a three-flavor parity doublet model, in which we introduce three representations, $\left[({\bf 3} , \bar{\bf 3})\oplus (\bar{\bf 3} , {\bf 3})\right]$, $\left[({\bf 3} , {\bf 6}) \oplus ({\bf 6}, {\bf 3})\right]$, and $\left[({\bf 8} , {\bf 1}) \oplus ({\bf 1} , {\bf 8})\right]$ of the chiral U$(3)_{\rm L}\times$U$(3)_{\rm R}$ symmetry. We find an extended version of the Goldberger-Treiman relation among the mass differences and the coupling constants for pionic transitions. This relation leads to an upper bound fo…
We have investigated $D^{+}π^{-}$ and $D^{*+}π^{-}$ final states and observed the two established $L=1$ charmed mesons, the $D_1(2420)^0$ with mass $2421^{+1+2}_{-2-2}$ MeV/c$^{2}$ and width $20^{+6+3}_{-5-3}$ MeV/c$^{2}$ and the $D_2^*(2460)^0$ with mass $2465 \pm 3 \pm 3$ MeV/c$^{2}$ and width $28^{+8+6}_{-7-6}$ MeV/c$^{2}$. Properties of these final states, including their decay angular distributions and spin-parity assignments, have been studied. We identify these two mesons as the $j_{light}=3/2$ doublet predicted by HQET. We also obtain constraints on {\footnotesize $Γ_S/(Γ_S + Γ_D)$} as…
The couplings and decay widths of the proceses (1^+,2^+)->(0^-,1^-)+rho are studied with ligh-cone QCD sum rules in the leading order of heavy quark effective theory. These processes are employed to estimate the two pion transition widths of the (1^+,2^+) doublet through the low mass tail of the rho resonance. Our calculation shows that the two pion decay widths are much smaller than the single pion decay widths. However, B_1 and B_2^* mesons should also have significant two pion decay widths around 1.5 MeV.
The latest results of anomalous muon magnetic moment at Fermilab show a discrepancy of 4.2 $σ$ between the Standard Model (SM) prediction and experimental value. In this work, we revisit $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ symmetry with in the paradigm of scotogenic model which explains muon ($g-2$) and neutrino mass generation, simultaneously. The mass of new gauge boson $M_{Z_{μτ}}$ generated after the spontaneous symmetry breaking of $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ is constrained, solely, in light of the current neutrino oscillation data to explain muon ($g-2$). In particular, we have obtained two regions I and II, around 1…
We consider a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) by a complex scalar doublet and a singlet along with three sterile neutrinos. The sterile neutrinos mix with the SM neutrinos to produce three light neutrino states consistent with the oscillation data and three heavy sterile states. The lightest sterile neutrino has lifetime longer than the age of the Universe and can provide correct dark matter relic abundance. Utilizing tree-level flavor changing interactions of a light scalar with mass~$\sim\mathcal{O}(100)$~MeV along with sterile neutrinos, we can explain the anomalous magnetic mom…
We present an alternative formulation of the left-right symmetric theory where the scalar sector consists of two Higgs doublets which differs from the standard version of the left-right model that makes use of $L-$ and $R-$ Higgs triplets and a Higgs bi-doublet. The basic idea is to consider few extra charged iso-singlet fields and the fermion masses can be realized by integrating out these heavy isosinglet fields. We also give a detailed discussion on neutrinoless double beta decay in this particular left-right symmetric theory where the right-handed Majorana neutrino can be of MeV range. Wit…
We present a simple and predictive model of radiative neutrino masses. It is a special case of the Zee model which introduces two Higgs doublets and a charged singlet. We impose a family-dependent Z_4 symmetry acting on the leptons, which reduces the number of parameters describing neutrino oscillations to four. A variety of predictions follow: The hierarchy of neutrino masses must be inverted; the lightest neutrino mass is extremely small and calculable; one of the neutrino mixing angles is determined in terms of the other two; the phase parameters take CP-conserving values with δ_{CP} = π; a…
We first derive the mass sum rules for the heavy hybrid mesons to obtain the binding energy and decay constants in the leading order of HQET. The pionic couplings between the lightest $1^{-+}$ hybrid $(Q\bar q g)$ and the lowest three heavy meson doublets are calculated with the light cone QCD sum rules. With $SU_f (3)$ flavor symmetry we calculate the widths for all the possible two-body decay processes with a Goldstone boson in the final state. The total width of the $1^{-+}$ hybrid is estimated to be 300 MeV. We find the dominant decay mode of the $1^{-+}$ hybrid is $1^{-+}\to π+ 1^+$ where…
