Nodal-line semimetals, one of the topological semimetals, have degeneracy along nodal lines where the band gap is closed. In many cases, the nodal lines appear accidentally, and in such cases it is impossible to determine whether the nodal lines appear or not, only from the crystal symmetry and the electron filling. In this paper, for spinless systems, we show that in specific space groups at $4N+2$ fillings ($8N+4$ fillings including the spin degree of freedom), presence of the nodal lines is required regardless of the details of the systems. Here, the spinless systems refer to crystals where the spin-orbit coupling is negligible and the spin degree of freedom can be omitted because of the SU(2) spin degeneracy. In this case the shape of the band structure around these nodal lines is like an hourglass, and we call this a spinless hourglass nodal-line semimetal. We construct a model Hamiltonian as an example and we show that it is always in the spinless hourglass nodal-line semimetal phase even when the model parameters are changed without changing the symmetries of the system. We also establish a list of all the centrosymmetric space groups, under which spinless systems always have hourglass nodal lines, and illustrate where the nodal lines are located. We propose that Al$_3$FeSi$_2$, whose space-group symmetry is Pbcn (No. 60), is one of the nodal-line semimetals arising from this mechanism.
The hourglass fermions in solid-state materials have been attracting significant interest recently. However, realistic two-dimensional (2D) materials with hourglass-shaped band structures are still very scarce. Here, through the first-principles calculations, we identify the monolayer Pb(ClO$_{2}$)$_{2}$ and Sr(ClO$_{2}$)$_{2}$ materials as the new realistic materials platform to realize 2D hourglass Weyl nodal loop. We show that these monolayer materials possess an hourglass Weyl nodal loop circling around the $Γ$ point and Weyl nodal line on the Brillouin zone (BZ) boundary in the absence of…
Hourglass dispersion is generally believed to be solely protected by nonsymmorphic symmetries, because these symmetries can introduce high-dimensional projective representations. Here, based on symmetry arguments, we propose that the hourglass dispersion can be jointly protected by symmorphic and nonsymmorphic symmetries, instead of the only conventional nonsymmorphic symmetry. Moreover, using first-principles calculations, we realize our proposal in phonon spectra of realistic materials that share an antiperovskite structure with space group \emph{P}4/\emph{nmm}. Importantly, the neck points …
In parallel to electronic systems, the concept of topology has been extended to phonons, which has led to the birth of topological phonons. Very recently, nodal point phonons, nodal line phonons, and nodal surface phonons have been proposed, and a handful of candidate materials have been predicted in solid-state materials. In this work, based on symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we propose that hourglass Weyl nodal line (HWNL) phonons and Dirac nodal line (DNL) phonons coexist in the phonon dispersion of a single material, KCuS, with a $Pnma$-type structure. The HWNLs and DN…
Based on first-principles calculation and analysis of crystal symmetries, we propose a kind of hourglass-like nodal net (HNN) semimetal in centrosymmetric Ag2BiO3 that is constructed by two hourglass-like nodal chains (HNCs) at mutually orthogonal planes in the extended Brillouin zone (BZ) when the weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC) mainly from the 6s orbital of Bi atoms is ignored. The joint point in the nodal net structure is a special double Dirac point located at the BZ corner. Different from previous HNN [Bzdusek et al., Nature 538, 75 (2016)] where the SOC and double groups nonsymmorphic sym…
Nonsymmorphic space group symmetries can generate exotic band-crossings in topological metals and semimetals. Here, based on symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we reveal rich band-crossing features in the existing layered compounds Ta$_3$SiTe$_6$ and Nb$_3$SiTe$_6$, enabled by nonsymmorphic symmetries. We show that in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), these three-dimensional (3D) bulk materials possess accidental Dirac loops and essential fourfold nodal lines. In the presence of SOC, there emerges an hourglass Dirac loop---a fourfold degenerate nodal loop, on which ea…
Nodal loops in two-dimensional (2D) systems are typically vulnerable against spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we explore 2D systems with a type of doubly degenerate nodal loops that are robust under SOC and feature an hourglass type dispersion. We present symmetry conditions for realizing such hourglass Weyl loops, which involve nonsymmorphic lattice symmetries. Depending on the symmetry, the loops may exhibit different patterns in the Brillouin zone. Based on first-principles calculations, we identify the monolayer GaTeI-family materials as a realistic material platform to realize such loops.…
It was recently shown that nonsymmorphic space group symmetries can protect novel surface states with hourglass-like dispersions. In this paper, we show that such dispersions can also appear in the bulk of three-dimensional (3D) systems which respect nonsymmorphic symmetries. Specifically, we construct 3D lattice models featuring hourglass-like dispersions in the bulk, which are protected by nonsymmorphic and time-reversal symmetries. We call such systems hourglass semimetals, as they have point or line nodes associated with hourglass-like dispersions. Hourglass nodal lines appear in glide-inv…
Using spin-resolved and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we have identified bulk band inversion and spin polarized surface state evolved from a weak topological insulator (TI) phase in van der Waals materials Nb3XTe6 (X = Si, Ge). The fingerprints of weak TI homologically emerge with hourglass fermions, as multi nodal chains composed by the same pair of valence and conduction bands gapped by spin orbit coupling. The novel topological state, with a pair of valence and conduction bands encoding both weak TI and hourglass semimetal nature, is essential …
We analyze triply degenerate nodal points [or triple points (TPs) for short] in energy bands of crystalline solids. Specifically, we focus on spinless band structures, i.e., when spin-orbit coupling is negligible, and consider TPs formed along high-symmetry lines in the momentum space by a crossing of three bands transforming according to a 1D and a 2D irreducible corepresentation (ICR) of the little co-group. The result is a complete classification of such TPs in all magnetic space groups, including the non-symmorphic ones, according to several characteristics of the nodal-line structure at a…
Screw rotations in nonsymmorphic space group symmetries induce the presence of hourglass and accordion shape band structures along screw invariant lines whenever spin-orbit coupling is nonnegligible. These structures induce topological enforced Weyl points on the band intersections. In this work we show that the chirality of each Weyl point is related to the representations of the cyclic group on the bands that form the intersection. To achieve this, we calculate the Picard group of isomorphism classes of complex line bundles over the 2-dimensional sphere with cyclic group action, and we show …
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of layered ternary telluride Ta3SiTe6 which is predicted to host nodal lines associated with nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry. We found that the energy bands in the valence-band region show Dirac-like dispersions which present a band degeneracy at the R point of the bulk orthorhombic Brillouin zone. This band degeneracy extends one-dimensionally along the whole SR high-symmetry line, forming the nodal lines protected by the glide mirror symmetry of the crystal. We also observed a small band splitting near EF which supports the existence…
The effects of the unique density of states (DOS) of a topological type-II nodal-line semimetal (NLS) on its thermoelectric (TE) transport properties are investigated through a combination of semi-analytical and first-principles methods with "spinless Mg$_3$Bi$_2$" as artificial material. The DOS in such a type-II NLS possesses two van Hove singularities near the energy of the nodal line that leads to a large $S$ value compared to the normal metals. Combined with the linear band at the nodal line that gives high electrical conductivity $σ$, the type-II NLS can exhibit a relatively high TE powe…
While condensed matter systems host both Fermionic and Bosonic quasi-particles, reliably predicting and empirically verifying topological states is only mature for Fermionic electronic structures, leaving topological Bosonic excitations sporadically explored. This is unfortunate, as Bosonic systems such a phonons offer the opportunity to assess spinless band structures where nodal lines can be realized without invoking special additional symetries to protect against spin-orbit coupling. Here we combine first-principles calculations and meV-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering to demonstrate t…
Most topological insulators discovered today in spinful systems can be transformed from topological semimetals (TSMs) with vanishing bulk gap via introducing the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which manifests the intrinsic links between the gapped TI phases and the gapless TSMs. Recently, we have proposed a new family of TSMs in time-reversal invariant {\it spinless} systems, which host butterfly-like nodal-lines (NLs) consisting of a pair of identical concentric intersecting coplanar ellipses (CICE). In this Communication, we unveil the intrinsic link between this exotic class of nodal-line semim…
We identify all symmetry-enforced band crossings in nonmagnetic orthorhombic crystals with and without spin-orbit coupling and discuss their topological properties. We find that orthorhombic crystals can host a large number of different band degeneracies, including movable Weyl and Dirac points with hourglass dispersions, fourfold double Weyl points, Weyl and Dirac nodal lines, almost movable nodal lines, nodal chains, and topological nodal planes. Interestingly, spin-orbit coupled materials in the space groups 18, 36, 44, 45, and 46 can have band pairs with only two Weyl points in the entire …
In recent years, the exotic properties of topological semimetals (TSMs) have attracted great attention and significant efforts have been made in seeking for new topological phases and material realization. In this work, we propose a new family of TSMs which harbors an unprecedented nodal line (NL) landscape consisting of a pair of concentric intersecting coplanar ellipses (CICE) at half-filling. Meanwhile, the CICE at half-filling guarantees the presence of a second pair of CICE beyond half-filling. Both CICEs are linked at four-fold degenerate points (FDPs) at zone boundaries. In addition, we…
