The baryon electromagnetic form factors are expressed in terms of two-dimensional densities describing the distribution of charge and magnetization in transverse space at fixed light-front time. We calculate the transverse densities of the spin-1/2 flavor-octet baryons at peripheral distances b = O(M_π^{-1}) using methods of relativistic chiral effective field theory (χEFT) and dispersion analysis. The densities are represented as dispersive integrals over the imaginary parts of the form factors in the timelike region (spectral functions). The isovector spectral functions on the two-pion cut t > 4 M_π^2 are calculated using relativistic χEFT including octet and decuplet baryons. The χEFT calculations are extended into the ρmeson mass region using an N/D method that incorporates the pion electromagnetic form factor data. The isoscalar spectral functions are modeled by vector meson poles. We compute the peripheral charge and magnetization densities in the octet baryon states, estimate the uncertainties, and determine the quark flavor decomposition. The approach can be extended to baryon form factors of other operators and the moments of generalized parton distributions.
The mass spectrum of the lowest lying octet baryons is calculated to next-to-next-to-leading order in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and partially quenched heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We work in the isospin limit and treat the decuplet baryons as dynamical fields. These results are necessary for extrapolating QCD and partially quenched QCD lattice simulations of the octet baryon masses.
We report on a recent study of finite-volume effects on the lowest-lying octet baryon masses using the covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order by analysing the latest $n_f = 2 + 1$ lattice QCD results from the NPLQCD Collaboration.
Magnetic properties of octet baryons are investigated within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Utilizing a power counting for large magnetic fields, the Landau levels of charged mesons are treated exactly giving rise to baryon energies that depend non-analytically on the strength of the magnetic field. In the small-field limit, baryon magnetic moments and polarizabilities emerge from the calculated energies. We argue that the magnetic polarizabilities of hyperons provide a testing ground for potentially large contributions from decuplet pole diagrams. In external magnetic fields, su…
We compute the magnetic moments of the octet baryons up to two orders in quenched chiral perturbation theory. In addition to the $\sim\sqrt{m_q}$ contributions that arise in QCD, there are lower-order contributions of the form $M_0^2\log m_q$ from loop diagrams involving hairpin interactions.
We extend a previous analysis of the lowest-lying octet baryon masses in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) by explicitly taking into account the contribution of the virtual decuplet baryons. Up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO), the effects of these heavier degrees of freedom are systematically studied. Their effects on the light-quark mass dependence of the octet baryon masses are shown to be relatively small and can be absorbed by the available low-energy constants up to N$^3$LO. Nevertheless, a better description of the finite-volume corrections of the latt…
We calculate baryon decuplet to octet electromagnetic transition form factors in quenched and partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. We work in the isospin limit of SU(3) flavor, up to next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, and to leading order in the heavy baryon expansion. Our results are necessary for proper extrapolation of lattice calculations of these transitions. We also derive expressions for the case of SU(2) flavor away from the isospin limit.
We report an analysis of the octet baryon masses using the covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order with and without the virtual decuplet contributions. Particular attention is paid to the finite-volume corrections and the finite lattice spacing effects on the baryon masses. A reasonable description of all the publicly available $n_f=2+1$ lattice QCD data is achieved.Utilyzing the Feynman-Hellmann theorem, we determine the nucleon sigma terms as $σ_{πN}=55(1)(4)$ MeV and $σ_{sN}=27(27)(4)$ MeV.
We report on a recent study of the ground-state octet baryon masses using the covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. By adjusting the available 19 low-energy constants, a good fit of the $n_f=2+1$ lattice quantum chromodynamics results from the PACS-CS, LHPC, HSC, QCDSF-UKQCD and NPLQCD collaborations is achieved.
We present a 2+1--flavor lattice QCD calculation of the electromagnetic Dirac and Pauli form factors of the octet baryons. The magnetic Sachs form factor is extrapolated at six fixed values of $Q^2$ to the physical pseudoscalar masses and infinite volume using a formulation based on heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory with finite-range regularization. We properly account for omitted disconnected quark contractions using a partially-quenched effective field theory formalism. The results compare well with the experimental form factors of the nucleon and the magnetic moments of the octet bary…
We report on a recent study of the ground-state octet baryon masses and sigma terms in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell scheme up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. To take into account lattice QCD artifacts, the finite-volume corrections and finite lattice spacing discretization effects are carefully examined. We performed a simultaneous fit of all the $n_f = 2+1$ lattice octet baryon masses and found that the various lattice simulations are consistent with each other. Although the finite lattice spacing discretization effects up to $\mathcal{…
We calculate the electric charge radii of the SU(3) pseudoscalar mesons and the SU(3) octet baryons in quenched and partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. We work in the isospin limit, up to next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, and to leading order in the heavy baryon expansion. The results are necessary for the extrapolation of future lattice calculations of meson and baryon charge radii. We also derive expressions for the nucleon and pion charge radii in SU(2) flavor away from the isospin limit.
We describe a constraint analysis for the interaction of the vector-meson octet with the baryon octet. Applying Dirac's Hamiltonian method, we verify that the standard interaction in terms of two independent SU(3) structures is consistent at the classical level. We argue how the requirement of self consistency with respect to perturbative renormalizability may lead to relations among the renormalized coupling constants of the system.
We compute the octet baryon charge radii to O(1/Heavy^3) in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We examine the effect of including the decuplet of spin-3/2 baryons explicitly. We find that it does no t improve the level of agreement between the HBchiPT and experimental values for the Sigma^- charge radius.
We study the isospin symmetry breaking and mass splittings of the eight lowest-lying baryons. We consider three kinds of baryon mass terms, including the bare mass term, the electromagnetic terms and the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking terms. We include the mixing term between flavor-octet and flavor-decuplet baryons. This assumes that the lowest-lying Sigma and Xi baryons contain a few decuplet components and so are not purely flavor-octet. We achieve a good fitting that the difference between every fitted mass and its experimental value is less than 0.2 MeV.
A complete and minimal relativistic Lagrangian is constructed at next-to-leading order for SU(3) chiral perturbation theory in the presence of baryon octet and baryon decuplet states. The Lagrangian has 13 terms for the pure decuplet sector, 6 terms for the transition sector from baryon octet to decuplet and (as already known from the literature) 16 terms for the pure octet sector. The minimal field content of 25 of these terms is meson-baryon four-point interactions. 3 terms give rise to the mass splitting for baryon octet and decuplet states, respectively. 2 terms give rise to overall mass s…
We study the ground-state octet baryon masses and sigma terms using the covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) with the extended-on-mass-shell (EOMS) renormalization scheme up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO). By adjusting the available 19 low-energy constants (LECs), a reasonable fit of the $n_f=2+1$ lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) results from the PACS-CS, LHPC, HSC, QCDSF-UKQCD and NPLQCD collaborations is achieved. Finite-volume corrections to the lattice data are calculated self-consistently. Our study shows that N$^3$LO BChPT describes better the light…
We study the interaction of vector mesons with the octet of stable baryons in the framework of the local hidden gauge formalism using a coupled channels unitary approach. We examine the scattering amplitudes and their poles, which can be associated to known J^P=1/2^-,3/2^- baryon resonances, in some cases, or give predictions in other ones. The formalism employed produces doublets of degenerate J^P=1/2^-,3/2^- states, a pattern which is observed experimentally in several cases. The findings of this work should also be useful to guide present experimental programs searching for new resonances, …
We consider the axial-vector form factors of the baryon octet in flavor-SU(3) chiral perturbation theory. The baryon octet and decuplet and the pseudoscalar-meson octet are included as explicit degrees of freedom. We explore the use of on-shell meson and baryon masses in the one-loop contributions to the axial-vector form factors and focus on a consistent treatment in terms of chiral power counting. The convergence properties of such an approach are scrutinized. We discuss the potential for comparison to upcoming QCD lattice data.
We apply a formalism inspired by heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory with finite-range regularization to dynamical $2+1-$flavor CSSM/QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration lattice QCD simulation results for the electric form factors of the octet baryons. The electric form factor of each octet baryon is extrapolated to the physical pseudoscalar masses, after finite-volume corrections have been applied, at six fixed values of $Q^2$ in the range 0.2-1.3 GeV$^2$. The extrapolated lattice results accurately reproduce the experimental form factors of the nucleon at the physical point, indicating that omitted…
We calculate the $m_d-m_u$ contribution to the mass splittings in baryonic isospin multiplets using SU(3) chiral perturbation theory and lattice QCD. Fitting isospin-averaged perturbation theory functions to PACS-CS and QCDSF-UKQCD Collaboration lattice simulations of octet baryon masses, and using the physical light quark mass ratio $m_u/m_d$ as input, allows $M_n-M_p$, $M_{Σ^-}-M_{Σ^+}$ and $M_{Ξ^-}-M_{Ξ^0}$ to be evaluated from the full SU(3) theory. The resulting values for each mass splitting are consistent with the experimental values after allowing for electromagnetic corrections. In th…
We analyze the constraint structure of the interaction of vector mesons with baryons using the classical Dirac constraint analysis. We show that the standard interaction in terms of two independent SU(3) structures is consistent at the classical level. We then require the self-consistency condition of the interacting system in terms of perturbative renormalizability to obtain relations for the renormalized coupling constants at the one-loop level. As a result we find a universal interaction with one coupling constant which is the same as in the massive Yang-Mills Lagrangian of the vector-meson…
We study finite-volume effects on the masses of the ground-state octet baryons using covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) up to next-to-leading order by analyzing the latest $n_f=2+1$ lattice Quantum ChromoDynamics (LQCD) results from the NPLQCD collaboration. Contributions of virtual decuplet baryons are taken into account using the "consistent" coupling scheme. We compare our results with those obtained from heavy baryon ChPT and show that, although both approaches can describe well the lattice data, the underlying physics is different: In HBChPT, virtual decuplet baryons play …
Using an SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion in the quark mass, we determine the QCD component of the nucleon, Sigma and Xi mass splittings of the baryon octet due to up-down (and strange) quark mass differences in terms of the kaon mass splitting. Provided the average quark mass is kept constant, the expansion coefficients in our procedure can be determined from computationally cheaper simulations with mass degenerate sea quarks and partially quenched valence quarks. Both the linear and quadratic terms in the SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion are considered; it is found that the…
We investigate the magnetic moments of the SU(3) octet baryons in the framework of the $SU(3)$ semibosonized Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model. The rotational $1/N_c$ corrections and strange quark mass in linear order are taken into account. We derive general relations between magnetic moments of the SU(3) octet baryons, based on the symmetry of our model. These relations indicate that higher order corrections such as $O(m_s/N_c)$ and $O(m^{2}_{s})$ are relatively small. The magnetic moments of the octet baryons predicted by our model are quantitatively in a good agreement with experimental results w…
The electromagnetic properties of baryon octet are studied in the perturbative chiral quark model (PCQM). The relativistic quark wave function is extracted by fitting the theoretical results of the proton charge form factor to experimental data and the predetermined quark wave function is applied to study the electromagnetic form factors of other octet baryons as well as magnetic moments, charge and magnetic radii. The PCQM results are found, based on the predetermined quark wave function, in good agreement with experimental data.
We present a study of axial charges of baryon ground and resonant states with relativistic constituent quark models. In particular, the axial charges of octet and decuplet $N$, $Σ$, $Ξ$, $Δ$, $Σ^*$, and $Ξ^*$ baryons are considered. The theoretical predictions are compared to existing experimental data and results from other approaches, notably from lattice quantum chromodynamics and chiral perturbation theory. The relevance of axial charges with regard to $π$-dressing and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking is discussed.
Neutrino processes caused by the neutral current are studied in octet baryon matter. Previous confusion about the baryonic matrix elements of the neutral current interaction is excluded, and a correct table for them improved by consideration of the proton spin problem is presented instead.
While electromagnetic and up-down quark mass difference effects on octet baryon masses are very small, they have important consequences. The stability of the hydrogen atom against beta decay is a prominent example. Here we include these effects by adding them to valence quarks in a lattice QCD calculation based on $N_f=2+1$ simulations with 5 lattice spacings down to 0.054 fm, lattice sizes up to 6 fm and average up-down quark masses all the way down to their physical value. This allows us to gain control over all systematic errors, except for the one associated with neglecting electromagnetis…
The self-energies of the full set of flavor SU(3) octet and decuplet baryons are computed within a relativistic chiral effective theory framework. The leading nonanalytic chiral behavior is derived for the octet and decuplet masses, and a finite-range regularization consistent with Lorentz and gauge invariance is applied to account for the finite size of the baryons. Using a four-dimensional dipole form factor, the relative importance of various meson-baryon loop contributions to the self-energies is studied numerically as a function of the dipole range parameter and meson mass, and comparison…
The octet, decuplet and antidecuplet baryon mass spectrum as a function of the Skyrme charge e and the SU(3)_f symmetry breaking parameters is given in tabular form. We also estimate the decuplet-octet and the antidecuplet-octet mass difference. Comparison with existing literature is given.
Medium modification of the magnetic moments of octet baryons in the isospin asymmetric nuclear medium at finite temperature has been calculated using medium modified quark and baryon masses derived in chiral SU(3) quark mean field model. The magnetic moments of baryons are found to vary significantly as a function of density of nuclear medium as well as with the increase in isospin asymmetry of the medium. The rise of temperature is found to decrease the effect of isospin asymmetry on masses and magnetic moments of baryons. The results of present investigation may be helpful to understand the …
Using SU(3) symmetry to constrain the pion BB' couplings, assuming SU(3) breaking comes only from one-loop pion cloud contributions, and using the the covariant spectator theory to describe the photon coupling to the quark core, we show how the experimental masses and magnetic moments of the baryon octet can be used to set a model independent constraint on the strength of the pion cloud contributions to the octet, and hence the nucleon, form factors at Q2=0.
We construct the chiral Lagrangians relevant in studies of the ground-state octet baryon masses up to $\mathcal{O}(a^2)$ by taking into account discretization effects and calculate the masses up to $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ in the extended-on-mass-shell scheme. As an application, we study the latest $n_f=2+1$ LQCD data on the ground-state octet baryon masses from the PACS-CS, QCDSF-UKQCD, HSC, and NPLQCD Collaborations. It is shown that the discretization effects for the studied LQCD simulations are at the order of one to two percent for lattice spacings up to $0.15$ fm and the pion mass up to 500 Me…
Transverse densities describe the distribution of charge and current at fixed light-front time and provide a frame-independent spatial representation of hadrons as relativistic systems. We calculate the transverse densities of the octet baryons at peripheral distances b = O(M_pi^{-1}) in an approach combining chiral effective field theory (ChEFT) and dispersion analysis. The densities are represented as dispersive integrals of the imaginary parts of the baryon electromagnetic form factors in the timelike region (spectral functions). The spectral functions on the two-pion cut at t > 4 M_pi^2 ar…
We study the octet baryon electromagnetic properties by applying the covariant spectator quark model, and provide covariant parametrization that can be used to study baryon electromagnetic reactions. While we use the lattice QCD data in the large pion mass regime (small pion cloud effects) to determine the parameters of the model in the valence quark sector, we use the nucleon physical and octet baryon magnetic moment data to parameterize the pion cloud contributions. The valence quark contributions for the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors are estimated by extrapolating the lattice pa…
The recently proposed $N^*(890)$ $1/2^-$ baryon is studied in a flavor $SU(3)$ scheme with $K$ matrix unitarization, by fitting to low energy cross section and phase shift data. It is found that $N^*(890)$ co-exists with low lying poles in other channels, which have been extensively discussed in the literature, though they belong to different octets, in the $SU(3)$ limit. Hence the existence of $N^*(890)$ is further verified.
The lightest baryon octet is studied within a covariant and confining Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. By solving the relativistic Faddeev equations including scalar and axialvector diquarks, we determine the masses and axial charges for ΔS = 0 transitions. For the latter the degree of violation of SU(3) symmetry arising because of the strange spectator quark(s) is found to be up to 10%.
We show that the chiral $SU(n)\otimes SU(n)$ flavor symmetry on the null-plane severely restricts the sea quarks in the baryon octet. It predicts large asymmetry for the light sea quarks $(u,d,s)$, and universality and abundance for the heavy sea quarks. Further it is shown that existence of the heavy sea quarks constrained by the same symmetry reduces the theoretical value of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule substantially.
The SU(3) octet states with baryon number B = 2, hexaquark dibaryons, are considered. Decay coupling constants sum rules for dibaryon octet into two ordinary baryon octets with ?$λ_8$ first order SU(3) symmetry breaking are given. An SU(4) extension of the analysis is commented upon. Possibilities for the experimental observation of multibaryon and anti-multibaryon states are pointed out.
We have calculated the in-medium magnetic moments of octet baryons in the presence of hot and dense symmetric nuclear matter. Effective magnetic moments of baryons have been derived from medium modified quark masses within chiral SU(3) quark mean field model. Further, for better insight of medium modification of baryonic magnetic moments, we have considered the explicit contributions from the valence quarks, sea quarks as well as sea orbital angular momentum of sea quarks. These effects have been successful in giving the description of baryonic magnetic moments in vacuum. The magnetic moments …
We have systematically investigated the decuplet (T) to octet (B) baryon ($T\rightarrow Bγ$) transition magnetic moments to the next-to-next-to-leading order and electric quadruple moments to the next-to-leading order in the framework of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Our calculation includes the contributions from both the intermediate decuplet and octet baryon states in the loops. Our results show reasonably good convergence of the chiral expansion and agreement with the experimental data. The analytical expressions may be useful to the chiral extrapolation of the lattice simul…
Octet baryon magnetic moments are calculated in framework of the light cone QCD sum rules. The analysis is carried for the general form of the interpolating currents for octet baryons. A comparison of our results on the magnetic moments of octet baryons with the predictions of other approaches and experimental data is presented.
We study the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors in nuclear matter using the covariant spectator quark model extended to the nuclear matter regime. The parameters of the model in vacuum are fixed by the study of the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors. In nuclear matter the changes in hadron properties are calculated by including the relevant hadron masses and the modification of the pion-baryon coupling constants calculated in the quark-meson coupling model. In nuclear matter the magnetic form factors of the octet baryons are enhanced in the low $Q^2$ region, while the electric fo…
Empirical mass formulae for the baryon octet and decuplet are presented. These formulae are functions of one integer variable and charge state of the baryons. With an exception of Lambda(1116), the formulae generate masses within 0.1% of the observed masses. The formulae also generate the same electromagnetic mass splittings predicted by SU(6)model. Spin 1/2 octet resonances and its relation to the octet mass formula is described.
Using the QCD sum rules method, we estimate the mass and residues of the first radial excitations of octet baryons. The contributions coming from the ground state baryons are eliminated by constructing the linear combinations of the sum rules corresponding to different Lorentz structures. Our predictions of the masses of the first radial excitations of octet baryons are in good agreement with the data.
We study higher twist distribution amplitudes for the SU_F(3) baryon octet. We identify independent functions for all baryons in the isospin symmetry limit and calculate the Wandzura-Wilczek contributions to the twist-4 and 5 distributions amplitudes.
Partial decay widths of the nucleon resonances $S_{11}(1535)$, $S_{11}(1650)$, $D_{13}(1520)$ and $D_{13}(1700)$ to the pseudoscalar mesons and octet baryons are studied within a chiral constituent quark model. The effects of the configurations mixing between the states $|N^{2}_{8}P_{M}>$ and $|N^{4}_{8}P_{M}>$ are considered, taking into account the breakdown of the $SU(6)\otimes O(3)$ symmetry. In addition, possible contributions of the strangeness components in the $S_{11}$ resonances are investigated. Experimental data for the partial decay widths of the $S_{11}$ and $D_{13}$ resonances ar…
It is argued that the mass spectrum of a baryon octet is linear, consistent with a Gell-Mann--Okubo type relation for the squared masses of the baryons obtained previously by Balázs and Nicolescu. The mass spectrum of a baryon decuplet is briefly discussed.
We evaluate the strangeness-conserving $N N$, $ΣΣ$, $ΞΞ$, $ΛΣ$ and the strangeness-changing $ΛN$, $ΣN$, $ΛΞ$, $ΣΞ$ axial charges in lattice QCD with two flavors of dynamical quarks and extend our previous work on pseudoscalar-meson-octet-baryon coupling constants so as to include $πΞΞ$, $KΛΞ$ and $KΣΞ$ coupling constants. We find that the axial charges have rather weak quark-mass dependence and the breaking in SU(3)-flavor symmetry is small at each quark-mass point we consider.
There is a striking suppression of the cross section for production of octet baryons in $e^+ e ^-$ annihilation, as the mass of the produced hadron increases. We present a simple parametrization for the fragmentation functions into octet baryons guided by two input models: the SU(3) flavor symmetry part is given by a quark-diquark model, and the baryon mass suppression part is inspired by the string model. We need only eight free parameters to describe the fragmentation functions for all octet baryons. These free parameters are determined by a fit to the experimental data of octet baryon produ…
The electromagnetic form factors of octet baryons are estimated within light cone QCD sum rules method, using the most general form of the interpolating current for baryons. A comparison of our predictions on the magnetic dipole and electric form factors with the results of other approaches is performed.
We calculate the octet baryon magnetic moments in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme up to next-to-next-to-leading order. At this order, there are nine low-energy constants, which cannot be uniquely determined by the seven experimental data alone. We propose two strategies to circumvent this problem. First, we assume that chiral perturbation theory has a certain convergence rate and use this as one additional constraint to fix the low-energy constants by fitting to the experimental data. Second, we fit to lattice QCD simulations t…
Sum rules are derived relating Dirac mean square radii and anomalous magnetic moments of various couples of the ground state $1/2^+$ octet baryons with the convergent integral of the difference of hadron photoproduction cross-sections on the corresponding baryons. Taking into account the present knowledge of static parameters of baryons a chain of inequalities for total hadronic photoproduction cross-sections on baryons is found from those sum rules.
We explore the electromagnetic contribution to the charge symmetry breaking in the octet baryon masses using a subtracted dispersion relation based on the Cottingham formula. For the proton-neutron mass splitting we report a minor revision of the recent analysis of Walker-Loud, Carlson and Miller. For the electromagnetic structure of the hyperons we constrain our analysis, where possible, by a combination of lattice QCD and SU(3) symmetry breaking estimates. The results for the baryon mass splittings are found to be compatible with recent lattice QCD+QED determinations. The uncertainties in th…
Dubnicka-Dubnickova-Kuraev (DDK) sum rules are considered. It is shown that integrals over differences of the total photoproduction cross-sections on octet baryons could be understood in terms of unitary symmetry approach. All the DDK sum rules for these quantities are expressed in terms of only three parameters.
