In the hierarchical formation model, galaxy clusters grow by accretion of smaller groups or isolated galaxies. During the infall into the centre of a cluster, the properties of accreted galaxies change. In particular, both observations and numerical simulations suggest that its dark matter halo is stripped by the tidal forces of the host.
We use galaxy-galaxy weak lensing to measure the average mass of dark matter haloes of satellite galaxies as a function of projected distance to the centre of the host, for different stellar mass bins. Assuming that the stellar component of the galaxy is less disrupted by tidal stripping, stellar mass can be used as a proxy of the infall mass. We study the stellar to halo mass relation of satellites as a function of the cluster-centric distance to measure tidal stripping.
We use the shear catalogues of the DES science verification archive, the CFHTLenS and the CFHT Stripe 82 (CS82) surveys, and we select satellites from the redMaPPer catalogue of clusters. For galaxies located in the outskirts of clusters, we find a stellar to halo mass relation in good agreement with the theoretical expectations from \citet{moster2013} for central galaxies. In the centre of the cluster, we find that this relation is shifted to smaller halo mass for a given stellar mass. We interpret this finding as further evidence for tidal stripping of dark matter haloes in high density environments.
High-quality observations of dark matter-dominated low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies indicate that, in contrast to the triaxial, centrally-concentrated cuspy halos formed in collisionless simulations of halo assembly, these galaxies reside in round, roughly constant density cored halos. In order to reconcile these data with galaxy formation in the context of LCDM, processes that alter the shape and density structure of the inner halo are required. We compile observational properties of LSB galaxies to evaluate the plausibility that a previously higher baryonic mass content and feedback fro…
We present a comprehensive study of the chemical properties of the stellar haloes of Milky-Way mass galaxies, analysing the transition between the inner to the outer haloes. We find the transition radius between the relative dominance of the inner-halo and outer-halo stellar populations to be ~15-20 kpc for most of our haloes, similar to that inferred for the Milky Way from recent observations. While the number density of stars in the simulated inner-halo populations decreases rapidly with distance, the outer-halo populations contribute about 20-40 per cent in the fiducial solar neighborhood, …
I highlight three results from cosmological hydrodynamic simulations that yield a realistic red sequence of galaxies: 1) Major galaxy mergers are not responsible for shutting off star-formation and forming the red sequence. Starvation in hot halos is. 2) Massive galaxies grow substantially (about a factor of 2 in mass) after being quenched, primarily via minor (1:5) mergers. 3) Hot halo quenching naturally explains why galaxies are red when they either (a) are massive or (b) live in dense environments.
We present a clustering analysis of ~60,000 massive (stellar mass Mstar > 10^{11} Msun) galaxies out to z = 1 drawn from 55.2 deg2 of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) II Supernova Survey. Strong clustering is detected for all the subsamples of massive galaxies characterized by different stellar masses (Mstar = 10^{11.0-11.5} Msun, 10^{11.5-12.0} Msun) or rest-frame colors (blue: U - V < 1.0, red: U - V > 1.0). We find that more mature (more massive or redder) galaxies are more clustered, which implies that more mature galaxies have started ste…
We perform an analysis of the spatial clustering properties of HI selected galaxies from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) using the formalism of the halo occupation distribution (HOD). The resulting parameter constraints show that the fraction of satellite galaxies (i.e. galaxies which are not the central member of their host dark matter halo) among HIPASS galaxies is <20%, and that satellite galaxies are therefore less common in HIPASS than in optically selected galaxy redshift surveys. Moreover the lack of fingers-of-god in the redshift space correlation function of HIPASS galaxies may …
We use Chandra and XMM-Newton to study the hot gas content in a sample of field early-type galaxies. We find that the L_X-L_K relationship is steeper for field galaxies than for comparable galaxies in groups and clusters. The low hot gas content of field galaxies with L_K < L_star suggests that internal processes such as supernovae driven winds or AGN feedback expel hot gas from low mass galaxies. Such mechanisms may be less effective in groups and clusters where the presence of an intragroup or intracluster medium can confine outflowing material. In addition, galaxies in groups and clusters m…
The empirical HOD model of Wang et al. 2006 fits, by construction, both the stellar mass function and correlation function of galaxies in the local Universe. In contrast, the semi-analytical models of De Lucia & Blazoit 2007 (DLB07) and Guo et al. 2011 (Guo11), built on the same dark matter halo merger trees than the empirical model, still have difficulties in reproducing these observational data simultaneously. We compare the relations between the stellar mass of galaxies and their host halo mass in the three models, and find that they are different. When the relations are rescaled to have th…
Our GHOSTS survey measures the stellar envelope properties of 14 nearby disk galaxies by imaging their resolved stellar populations with HST/ACS&WFPC2. Most of the massive galaxies in the sample (Vrot >200 km/s) have very extended stellar envelopes with Sersic law profiles or mu(r)~r^-2.5 power law profiles in the outer regions. For these massive galaxies we can fit the central bulge light and the outer halo out to 30 kpc with one and the same Sersic profile and the stellar surface density of the profiles correlate with Hubble type and bulge- to-disk ratio. This suggests that the central bulge…
The emerging empirical picture of galaxy stellar mass (Ms) assembly shows that galaxy population buildup proceeds from top to down in Ms. By connecting galaxies to LCDM halos and their histories, individual (average) Ms growth tracks can be inferred. These tracks show that massive galaxies assembled their Ms the earlier the more massive the halo, and that less massive galaxies are yet actively growing in Ms, the more active the less massive is the halo. The predicted star formation rates as a function of mass and the downsizing of the typical mass that separate active galaxies from the passive…
Using SDSS Stripe82 data we have obtained deep radial surface brightness profiles of 7 face-on to intermediate inclined late-type spirals down to \sim 30 mag arcsec^-2 in the r'-band. We do not find any evidence for a sharp cut-off of the light distribution of the disks but a smooth continuation into the stellar halos of galaxies. Stellar halos start to affect the surface brightness profiles of the galaxies at \sim 28 mag arcsec^-2, and at a radial distance of \sim 4-10 inner scale-lengths. We find that the light contribution from the stellar halo could be responsible of previous classificatio…
We present a determination of the two-dimensional shape parameters of the blue and red globular cluster systems (GCSs) in a large number of elliptical galaxies and lenticular galaxies (early-type galaxies, called ETGs). We use a homogeneous data set of the globular clusters in 23 ETGs obtained from the HST/ACS Virgo Cluster Survey. The position angles of both blue and red GCSs show a correlation with those of the stellar light distribution, showing that the major axes of the GCSs are well aligned with those of their host galaxies. However, the shapes of the red GCSs show a tight correlation wi…
We measure the angular 2-point correlation functions of galaxies in a volume limited, photometrically selected galaxy sample from the fifth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We split the sample both by luminosity and galaxy type and use a halo-model analysis to find halo-occupation distributions that can simultaneously model the clustering of all, early-, and late-type galaxies in a given sample. Our results for the full galaxy sample are generally consistent with previous results using the SDSS spectroscopic sample, taking the differences between the median redshifts of the photom…
It was recently suggested that, compared to its stellar mass (M*), the central stellar velocity dispersion (sigma*) of a galaxy might be a better indicator for its host dark matter halo mass. Here we test this hypothesis by estimating the dark matter halo mass for central alaxies in groups as function of M* and sigma*. For this we have estimated the redshift-space cross-correlation function (CCF) between the central galaxies at given M* and sigma* and a reference galaxy sample, from which we determine both the projected CCF, w_p(r_p), and the velocity dispersion profile (VDP) of satellites aro…
We study the stellar mass content of massive haloes in the redshift range 0.86<z<1.34, by measuring: (1) The stellar mass in the central galaxy versus total dynamical halo mass. (2) The total stellar mass (including satellites) versus total halo mass. (3) The radial stellar mass and number density profiles for the ensemble halo. We use a Ks-band selected catalogue for the 10 clusters in the Gemini Cluster Astrophysics Spectroscopic Survey (GCLASS), with photometric redshifts and stellar masses measured from 11-band SED fitting. Combining the photometric catalogues with the deep spectroscopic c…
We present a new statistical method to determine the relationship between the stellar masses of galaxies and the masses of their host dark matter haloes over the entire cosmic history from z~4 to the present. This multi-epoch abundance matching (MEAM) model self-consistently takes into account that satellite galaxies first become satellites at times earlier than they are observed. We employ a redshift-dependent parameterization of the stellar-to-halo mass relation to populate haloes and subhaloes in the Millennium simulations with galaxies, requiring that the observed stellar mass functions at…
We present a clustering analysis of near ultraviolet (NUV) - optical color selected luminosity bin samples of green valley galaxies. These galaxy samples are constructed by matching the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 with the latest Galaxy Evolution Explorer source catalog which provides NUV photometry. We present cross-correlation function measurements and determine the halo occupation distribution of these transitional galaxies using a new multiple tracer analysis technique. We extend the halo-occupation formalism to model the cross-correlation function between a galaxy sample of in…
We provide a set of numerical N-body simulations for studying the formation of the outer Milky Ways's stellar halo through accretion events. After simulating minor mergers of prograde and retrograde orbiting satellite halo with a Dark Matter main halo, we analyze the signal left by satellite stars in the rotation velocity distribution. The aim is to explore the orbital conditions where a retrograde signal in the outer part of the halo can be obtained, in order to give a possible explanation of the observed rotational properties of the Milky Way stellar halo. Our results show that, for satellit…
We report new observations of circumgalactic gas in the halos of early type galaxies obtained by the COS-Halos Survey with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that detections of HI surrounding early type galaxies are typically as common and strong as around star-forming galaxies, implying that the total mass of circumgalactic material is comparable in the two populations. For early type galaxies, the covering fraction for HI absorption above 10^16 cm^2 is ~40-50% within ~150 kpc. Line widths and kinematics of the detected material show it to be cold (T ~…
We present an analytic formula for the galaxy bispectrum in redshift space on the basis of the halo approach description with the halo occupation distribution of central galaxies and satellite galaxies. This work is an extension of a previous work on the galaxy power spectrum, which illuminated the significant contribution of satellite galaxies to the higher multipole spectrum through the non-linear redshift space distortions of their random motions. Behaviors of the multipoles of the bispectrum are compared with results of numerical simulations assuming a halo occupation distribution of the L…
We present a method for populating dark matter simulations with haloes of mass below the resolution limit. It is based on stochastically sampling a field derived from the density field of the halo catalogue, using constraints from the conditional halo mass function n(m|δ). We test the accuracy of the method and show its application in the context of building mock galaxy samples. We find that this technique allows precise reproduction of the two-point statistics of galaxies in mock samples constructed with this method. Our results demonstrate that the full information content of a simulation ca…
Many of the fundamental properties of early-type galaxies (ellipticals and lenticulars) can only be accessed by venturing beyond their oft-studied centers into their large-radius halo regions. Advances in observations of kinematical tracers allow early-type halos to be increasingly well probed. This review focuses on recent findings on angular momentum and dark matter content, and discusses some possible implications for galaxy structure and formation.
Using conditional luminosity functions (CLFs) which encode the luminosity distribution of galaxies as a function of halo mass, we construct a halo model of IRAS galaxies selected at 60 micron. An abundance matching technique is used to link galaxy luminosity to the host halo mass. The shape of the mass - light relation at 60 micron is different from those derived at r-, K- and B-band. This is because the 60 micron LF can not be fitted by a Schechter function with a sharp exponential cutoff. We then seek the parameters in the CLFs that best fit the LF and power spectrum. We find that the predic…
Context: Understanding the evolution of the dark matter halos of galaxies after they become part of a cluster is essential for understanding the evolution of these satellite galaxies. Aims: We investigate the potential of galaxy-galaxy lensing to map the halo density profiles of galaxies in clusters. Methods: We propose a method that separates the weak-lensing signal of the dark-matter halos of galaxies in clusters from the weak-lensing signal of the cluster's main halo. Using toy cluster models as well as ray-tracing through N-body simulations of structure formation along with semi-analytic g…
The non-linear dynamics of bending instability and vertical structure of a galactic stellar disc embedded into a spherical halo are studied with N-body numerical modelling. Development of the bending instability in stellar galactic disc is considered as the main factor that increases the disc thickness. Correlation between the disc vertical scale height and the halo-to-disc mass ratio is predicted from the simulations. The method of assessment of the spherical-to-disc mass ratio for edge-on spiral galaxies with small bulges is considered. Modelling of eight edge-on galaxies: NGC 891, NGC 4738,…

In cold dark matter cosmologies, the most massive dark matter halos are predicted to undergo rapid growth at z<1. While there is the expectation that massive galaxies will also rapidly grow via merging, recent observational studies conclude that the stellar masses of the most massive galaxies grow by just 30 percent at z<1. We have used the observed space density and clustering of z<1 red galaxies in Bootes to determine how these galaxies populate dark matter halos. In the most massive dark matter halos, central galaxy stellar mass is proportional to halo mass to the power of a third and much …
Taking advantage of the ultra-deep near-infrared imaging obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope on the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, we detect and explore for the first time the properties of the stellar haloes of two Milky Way-like galaxies at z~1. We find that the structural properties of those haloes (size and shape) are similar to the ones found in the local universe. However, these high-z stellar haloes are approximately three magnitudes brighter and exhibit bluer colours ((g-r)<0.3 mag) than their local counterparts. The stellar populations of z~1 stellar haloes are compatible with having a…
Since reionization prevents star formation in most halos below 3 x 10^9 solar masses, dwarf galaxies only populate a fraction of existing dark matter halos. We use hydrodynamic cosmological simulations of the Local Group to study the discriminating factors for galaxy formation in the early Universe and connect them to the present-day properties of galaxies and halos. A combination of selection effects related to reionization, and the subsequent evolution of halos in different environments, introduces strong biases between the population of halos that host dwarf galaxies, and the total halo pop…
Motivated by previous findings that the magnitude gap between certain satellite galaxy and the central galaxy can be used to improve the estimation of halo mass, we carry out a systematic study of the information content of different member galaxies in the modelling of the host halo mass using a machine learning approach. We employ data from the hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG and train a Random Forest (RF) algorithm to predict a halo mass from the stellar masses of its member galaxies. Exhaustive feature selection is adopted to disentangle the importances of different galaxy members. W…
Halo Abundance Matching has been used to construct a one-parameter mapping between galaxies and dark matter haloes by assuming that halo mass and galaxy luminosity (or stellar mass) are monotonically related. While this approach has been reasonably successful, it is known that galaxies must be described by at least two parameters, as can be seen from the two-parameter Fundamental Plane on which massive early-type galaxies lie. In this paper, we derive a connection between initial dark matter density perturbations in the early universe and present-day virialized dark matter haloes by assuming s…
We use the UniverseMachine to analyze the source of scatter between the central galaxy mass, the total stellar mass in the halo, and the dark matter halo mass. We also propose a new halo mass estimator, the cen+N mass: the sum of the stellar mass of the central and the N most massive satellites. We show that, when real space positions are perfectly known, the cen+N mass has scatter competitive with that of richness-based estimators. However, in redshift space, the cen+N mass suffers less from projection effects in the UniverseMachine model. The cen+N mass is therefore a viable low scatter halo…
We use the Illustris Simulations to gain insight into the build-up of the outer, low-surface brightness regions which surround galaxies. We characterize the stellar haloes by means of the logarithmic slope of the spherically-averaged stellar density profiles, alphaSTARS at z=0, and we relate these slopes to the properties of the underlying Dark-Matter (DM) haloes, their central galaxies, and their assembly histories. We analyze a sample of ~5,000 galaxies resolved with more than 5x10^4 particles each, and spanning a variety of morphologies and halo masses (3x10^11 < Mvir < 10^14 Msun). We find…
We have examined the resolved stellar populations at large galactocentric distances along the minor axis (from 10 kpc up to between 40 and 75 kpc), with limited major axis coverage, of six nearby highly-inclined Milky Way-mass disc galaxies using HST data from the GHOSTS survey. We select red giant branch stars to derive stellar halo density profiles. The projected minor axis density profiles can be approximated by power laws with projected slopes of between $-2$ and $-3.7$ and a diversity of stellar halo masses of $1-6\times 10^{9}M_{\odot}$, or $2-14\%$ of the total galaxy stellar masses. Th…
We present a quantitative measurement of the amount of clustering present in the inner $\sim30$ kpc of the stellar halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). For this we analyse the angular positions and radial velocities of the carefully selected Planetary Nebulae (PNe) in the M31 stellar halo. We study the cumulative distribution of pair-wise distances in angular position and line of sight velocity space, and find that the M31 stellar halo contains substantially more stars in the form of close pairs as compared to that of a featureless smooth halo. In comparison to a smoothed/scrambled distribution…
We examine the stellar haloes of the Auriga simulations, a suite of thirty cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical high-resolution simulations of Milky Way-mass galaxies performed with the moving-mesh code AREPO. We study halo global properties and radial profiles out to $\sim 150$ kpc for each individual galaxy. The Auriga haloes are diverse in their masses and density profiles; mean metallicity and metallicity gradients; ages; and shapes, reflecting the stochasticity inherent in their accretion and merger histories. A comparison with observations of nearby late-type galaxies shows very good agre…
The stellar halo of the Milky Way is known to have a highly lumpy structure due to the presence of tidal debris and streams accreted from the satellite galaxies. The abundance and distribution of these substructures can provide a wealth of information on the assembly history of the Milky Way. We use some information-theoretic measures to study the anisotropy in a set of Milky Way-sized stellar halos from the Bullock & Johnston suite of simulations that uses a hybrid approach coupling semi-analytic and N-body techniques. Our analysis shows that the whole-sky anisotropy in each stellar halo incr…
If the stellar halos of disk galaxies are built up from the disruption of dwarf galaxies, models predict highly structured variations in the stellar populations within these halos. We test this prediction by studying the ratio of blue horizontal branch stars (BHB stars; more abundant in old, metal-poor populations) to main-sequence turn-off stars (MSTO stars; a feature of all populations) in the stellar halo of the Milky Way using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We develop and apply an improved technique to select BHB stars using ugr color information alone, yielding a sample of ~9000 …
The inference of the Milky Way halo mass requires modelling the phase space structure of dynamical tracers, with different tracers following different models and having different levels of sensitivity to the halo mass. For steady-state models, phase correlations among tracer particles lead to an irreducible stochastic bias. This bias is small for satellite galaxies and dark matter particles, but as large as a factor of 2 for halo stars. This is consistent with the picture that satellite galaxies closely trace the underlying phase space distribution of dark matter particles, while halo stars ar…
Cold dark matter model predicts that the large-scale structure grows hierarchically. Small dark matter halos form first. Then, they grow gradually via continuous merger and accretion. These halos host the majority of baryonic matter in the Universe in the form of hot gas and cold stellar phase. Determining how baryons are partitioned into these phases requires detailed modeling of galaxy formation and their assembly history. It is speculated that formation time of the same mass halos might be correlated with their baryonic content. To evaluate this hypothesis, we employ halos of mass above $10…
We study the dependence of angular two-point correlation functions on stellar mass ($M_{*}$) and specific star formation rate (sSFR) of $M_{*}>10^{10}M_{\odot}$ galaxies at $z\sim1$. The data from UKIDSS DXS and CFHTLS covering 8.2 deg$^{2}$ sample scales larger than 100 $h^{-1}$Mpc at $z\sim1$, allowing us to investigate the correlation between clustering, $M_{*}$, and star formation through halo modeling. Based on halo occupation distributions (HODs) of $M_{*}$ threshold samples, we derive HODs for $M_{*}$ binned galaxies, and then calculate the $M_{*}/M_{\rm halo}$ ratio. The ratio for cent…
We investigate the alignment of galaxies and haloes relative to cosmic web filaments using the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulation. We identify filaments by applying the NEXUS+ method to the mass distribution and the Bisous formalism to the galaxy distribution. Both web finders return similar filamentary structures that are well aligned and that contain comparable galaxy populations. EAGLE haloes have an identical spin alignment with filaments as their counterparts in dark matter only simulations: a complex mass dependent trend with low mass haloes spinning preferentially parallel to and high mass…
Using a sample of 25683 star-forming and 2821 passive galaxies at $z\sim2$, selected in the COSMOS field following the BzK color criterion, we study the hosting halo mass and environment of galaxies as a function of their physical properties. Spitzer and Herschel provide accurate SFR estimates for starburst galaxies. We measure the auto- and cross-correlation functions of various galaxy sub-samples and infer the properties of their hosting halos using both an HOD model and the linear bias at large scale. We find that passive and star-forming galaxies obey a similarly rising relation between th…
We demonstrate how the total luminosity in satellite galaxies is a powerful probe of dark matter halos around central galaxies. The method cross-correlates central galaxies in spectroscopic galaxy samples with fainter galaxies detected in photometric surveys. After background subtraction, the excess galaxies around the central galaxies represent faint satellite galaxies within the dark matter halo. Using abundance matching models, we show that the the total galaxy luminosity, L_sat, scales linearly with host halo mass, making L_sat an excellent proxy for M_h. L_sat is also sensitive to the for…
In this paper, we consider the problem of the evolution of the disk subsystem of galaxies in view of the halo. To this end, we have studied the dependence of the evolution of a non-linearly non-radially disk oscillating in its plane depending on the basic parameters of the dark matter halo numerically. The dark matter halo stabilizes the instabilities in the plane of the disk, but destabilizes its vertical oscillations. The global disk structure is dependent strongly on the mass and shape of the of dark matter halo. The evolutionary dependence of the oscillation process of a self-gravitating d…
Dark matter (DM) halos of Sc-Im and dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies satisfy scaling laws: halos in lower-luminosity galaxies have smaller core radii, higher central densities, and smaller velocity dispersions. These results are based on maximum-disk rotation curve decompositions for giant galaxies and Jeans equation analysis for dwarfs. (1) We show that spiral, Im, and Sph galaxies with absolute magnitudes M_V > -18 form a sequence of decreasing baryon-to-DM surface density with decreasing luminosity. We suggest that this is a sequence of decreasing baryon retention vs. supernova-driven losse…
We contend that a single power law halo mass distribution is appropriate for direct matching to the stellar masses of observed Local Group dwarf galaxies, allowing the determination of the slope of the stellar mass-halo mass relation for low mass galaxies. Errors in halo masses are well defined as the Poisson noise of simulated local group realisations, which we determine using constrained local universe simulations (CLUES). For the stellar mass range 10$^7$<M*<10$^8$M$_\odot$, for which we likely have a complete census of observed galaxies, we find that the stellar mass-halo mass relation fol…
The outer stellar halos of galaxies contain vital information about the formation history of galaxies, since the relaxation timescales in the outskirts are long enough to keep the memory, while the information about individual formation events in the central parts has long been lost due to mixing, star formation and relaxation. To unveil some of the information encoded in these faint outer halo regions, we study the stellar outskirts of galaxies selected from a fully hydrodynamical high resolution cosmological simulation, called Magneticum. We find that the density profiles of the outer stella…
The absence of stellar disc truncations in low-inclined spiral galaxies has been a matter of debate in the last decade. Disc truncations are often observed in highly inclined galaxies but no obvious detection of this feature has so far been made in face-on spirals. Here we show, using a simple exponential disc plus stellar halo model based on current observational constraints, that truncations in face-on projections occur at surface brightness levels comparable to the brightness of stellar haloes at the same radial distance. In this sense, stellar haloes outshine the galaxy disc at the expecte…
We utilize Young's algorithm to model the adiabatic compression of the dark matter haloes of galaxies in the THINGS survey to determine the relationship between the halo fit to the rotation curve and the corresponding primordial halo prior to compression. Young's algorithm conserves radial action and angular momentum, resulting in less halo compression than more widely utilized approximations. We find that estimates of the parameters of the NFW haloes fit to the current dark matter distribution systematically overestimate the concentration and underestimate the virial velocity of the correspon…
We investigate the chemical and kinematic properties of the diffuse stellar haloes of six simulated Milky Way-like galaxies from the Aquarius Project. Binding energy criteria are adopted to defined two dynamically distinct stellar populations: the diffuse inner and outer haloes, which comprise different stellar sub-populations with particular chemical and kinematic characteristics. Our simulated inner- and outer-halo stellar populations have received contributions from debris stars (formed in sub-galactic systems while they were outside the virial radius of the main progenitor galaxies) and en…
We propose that the observed stellar halo around the globular cluster (GC) NGC 1851 is evidence for its formation in the central region of its defunct host dwarf galaxy. We numerically investigate the long-term dynamical evolution of a nucleated dwarf galaxy embedded in a massive dark matter halo under the strong tidal field of the Galaxy. The dwarf galaxy is assumed to have a stellar nucleus (or a nuclear star cluster) that could be the progenitor for NGC 1851. We find that although the dark matter halo and the stellar envelope of the host dwarf of NGC 1851 can be almost completely stripped d…
It has been suggested that the central stellar velocity dispersion of galaxies can trace dark matter halo mass directly. We test this hypothesis using a complete spectroscopic sample of isolated galaxies surrounded by faint satellite galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12. We apply a friends-of-friends algorithm with projected linking length $ΔD < 100$ kpc and radial velocity linking length $ΔV < 1000$ km s$^{-1}$ to construct our sample. Our sample includes 2807 isolated galaxies with 3417 satellite galaxies at $0.01 < z < 0.14$. We divide the sample into two groups based …
We use surface brightness contour maps of nearby edge-on spiral galaxies to determine whether extended bright radio halos are common. In particular, we test a recent model of the spatial structure of the diffuse radio continuum by Subrahmanyan and Cowsik which posits that a substantial fraction of the observed high-latitude surface brightness originates from an extended Galactic halo of uniform emissivity. Measurements of the axial ratio of emission contours within a sample of normal spiral galaxies at 1500 MHz and below show no evidence for such a bright, extended radio halo. Either the Galax…
We numerically investigate evolution of gaseous halos around disk galaxies in different environments ranging from small groups to rich clusters in order to understand galaxy evolution in these environments. Our simulations self-consistently incorporate effects of ram pressure of intergalactic medium (IGM) on disk and halo gas of galaxies and hydrodynamical interaction between disk and halo gas so that mass fractions of halos gas stripped by ram pressure of IGM (F_strip) can be better estimated. We mainly investigate how F_strip depends on total masses of their host environments (M_host}), gala…
