The ability to tailor a coherent surface plasmon polariton (SPP) field is an important step towards a number of new opportunities for a broad range of nanophotonic applications such as sensing [1,2], nano-circuitry [3,4], optical data storage [5,6], super-resolution imaging [7,8], plasmonic tweezers [9,10] and in-plane communications [11]. Scanning a converging SPP spot or designing SPP profiles using an ensemble of spots have both been demonstrated previously [12-14]. SPPs, however, are normally excited by intense, coherent light sources-lasers. Hence, interference between adjacent spots is inevitable and will affect the overall SPP field distributions. Here we report a reconfigurable and wavelength-independent platform for generating a tailored 2D SPP field distribution by considering the coherent field as a whole rather than individual spots. The new perspective also enables us to reveal the inherent constraints implied in a 2D coherent field distribution. Our generic design methodology works not only for SPP waves but also for other two-dimensional wave systems like surface acoustic waves [15].
We suggest a novel multifrequency broadband plasmonic Yagi-Uda-type nanoantenna equipped with an array of tapered directors. Each director can be used for the excitation of the antenna by nanoemitters matched spectrally with the director resonant frequency and placed in the director near-field region. Multifrequency op- eration of nanoantennas provides tremendous opportunities for broadband emission enhancement, spectroscopy and sensing. By the principle of reciprocity, the same tapered nanoantenna architecture can be used both as a transmitter and/or as a receiver, thus being useful for creat…
We propose and theoretically verify an efficient mechanism of broadband coupling between incident light and on-chip dielectric slot waveguide by employing a tapered plasmonic nanoantenna. Nanoantenna receives free space radiation and couples it to a dielectric slot waveguide with the efficiency of up to 20% in a broad spectral range, having a small footprint as compared with the currently used narrowband dielectric grating couplers. We argue that the frequency selective properties of such nanoantennas also allow for using them as ultrasmall on-chip multiplexer/demultiplexer devices.
The intriguing analogy between quantum physics and optics has inspired the design of unconventional integrated photonics devices. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a broadband integrated polarization beam splitter (PBS) by implementing the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) technique in a three-waveguide plasmonic system. Our proposed PBS exhibits >250 nm TM bandwidth with <-40 dB extinction and >150 nm TE bandwidth with <-20 dB extinction, covering the entire S-, C- and L-band and partly E-band. Moreover, near-lossless light transfer is achieved in our system despite the inco…
Broadband and tunable control of surface plasmon polaritons in the near-infrared and visible spectrum is demonstrated theoretically and numerically with a pair of phased nanoslits. We establish with simulations supported by a coupled wave model that by dividing the incident power equally between two input channels, the maximum plasmon intensity deliverable to either side of the nanoslit pair is twice that for an isolated slit. For a broadband source, a compact device with nanoslit separation of the order of a tenth of the wavelength is shown to steer nearly all the generated plasmons to one si…
We propose ultra-broadband reflective and absorptive polarizers in the visible range using multi-scaled Ag nano wire-slit arrays. The nano arrays can be tuned from reflective to absorptive by incorporating Ag wires/strips with different lengths/widths. The ultra-broadband nature of the absorptive array, with averaged absorption as high as ~80%, is due to the collective excitations of plasmonic resonances in the Ag wires/strips with different length scales. The Ag nano wire-slit arrays are realized experimentally by using a simple two-times shadowing vapor deposition method. They exhibit broadb…
Quasi-crystals are intriguing as they exhibit rotational symmetry and long range ordering but lack translational symmetry. 2-dimensional metal-dielectric patterns are interesting to make use of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mediated local field enhancement and for near dispersionless SPP modes. In plasmonic crystals, the orientation and periodicity of the pattern dictate the polarization response and the discrete plasmon resonances while the interfaces define the plasmon dispersion. However, unique properties of plasmonic quasicrystals lead to polarization independence, designable k-space an…
We propose and design an ultra-compact and broadband tunable multimode interference (MMI) splitter in mid-infrared based on graphene plasmonic waveguides. The size of the device is only 0.56μm*1.2μm, which corresponds to device area of only about 0.014λ^2, where λ is the vacuum wavelength. And the center wavelength of the device can be tuned in a broad band from 7μm to 9μm with the Fermi level of graphene varied from 0.5eV to 1eV. Furthermore, the device is easy to be fabricated on chip.
Plasmonic enhancement of nonlinear light-matter interaction can be achieved via dedicated optimization of resonant plasmonic modes that are spectrally matched to the different wavelengths involved in the particular nonlinear optical process. In this work, we investigate the generation and enhancement of broadband four-wave mixing (FWM) in a plasmonic azimuthally chirped grating (ACG). The azimuthally varying grating periodicity in an ACG offers a well-defined channel to mediate the near field and the far field over a broad range of wavelengths. However, the particular mechanism responsible for…
In this paper, a plasmonic absorber consisting of a metal-dielectric-metal stack with a top layer of Sierpinski nanocarpet is theoretically investigated. Such compact absorber depicts broadband angle-independent behavior over a wide optical wavelength range ($400-700$ nm) and a broad range of angles of light incidence ($0-80^{\circ}$). Including several feature sizes, such fractal-like structure shows widely strong extinction ($85-99$%) response for either transverse electric or magnetic polarization states under normal incidence. Underlying mechanisms of absorbance due to excited surface plas…
Designing broadband enhanced chirality is of strong interest to the emerging fields of chiral chemistry and sensing, or to control the spin orbital momentum of photons in recently introduced nanophotonic chiral quantum and classical optical applications. However, chiral light-matter interactions have an extremely weak nature, are difficult to be controlled and enhanced, and cannot be made tunable or broadband. In addition, planar ultrathin nanophotonic structures to achieve strong, broadband, and tunable chirality at the technologically important visible to ultraviolet spectrum still remain el…
The key challenge in current research into electromagnetic cloaking is to achieve invisibility over an extended bandwidth. There has been significant progress towards this using the idea of cloaking by sweeping under the carpet of Li and Pendry, with dielectric structures superposed on a mirror. Here, we show that we can harness surface plasmon polaritons at a metal surface structured with a dielectric material to obtain a unique control of their propagation. We exploit this to control plasmonic coupling and demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally cloaking over an unprecedented bandw…
Unidirectional wave propagation in nonreciprocal structures enables exciting opportunities to control and enhance wave-matter interactions in extreme ways. Within this context, here we investigate the possibility of using terminated unidirectional plasmonic waveguides to enhance typically weak nonlinear effects by orders of magnitude. We theoretically demonstrate remarkable levels of electric field enhancement and confinement (field hot-spots) when the unidirectional waveguiding structure is terminated with a suitable boundary that fully stops the one-way mode. Such a large field enhancement, …
Chemiphores are entities, which exhibit wide-band light emission without any external light source but just due to the chemical reaction resulting in the chemiluminescence effect. Since the chemiphores usually have low quantum efficiency, chemiluminescence is a weak optical effect. We found that plasmonic nanoparticles can efficiently enhance the peculiar effect of chemiluminescence due to the acceleration of the radiative decay of the chemiphore excited state which, in turn, enlarges the chemiluminescence yield. Correspondingly, plasmonic nanoparticles are nanoparticles with sub-wavelength si…
We report on a chiral nanostructure, which we term a "butterfly nanoantenna," that, when used in a metasurface, allows the direct conversion of a linearly polarized beam into a nonlinear optical far-field of arbitrary complexity. The butterfly nanoantenna exhibits field enhancement in its gap for every incident linear polarization, which can be exploited to drive nonlinear optical emitters within the gap, for the structuring of light within a frequency range not accessible by linear plasmonics. As the polarization, phase and amplitude of the field in the gap are highly controlled, nonlinear em…
Here, we demonstrate a spectrally broadband, GHz-fast Mach-Zehnder interferometeric modulator, exhibiting a miniscule VpL of 95 V-um, deploying a sub-wavelength short electrostatically tunable plasmonic phase-shifter, based on heterogeneously integrated ITO thin films into silicon photonics.
The loss of surface plasmon polaritons has long been considered as a fatal shortcoming in information transport. Here we propose a plasmonic absorber utilizing this "shortcoming" to absorb the stray light in photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Based on adiabatic mode evolution, its performance is insensitive to incident wavelength with bandwidth larger than 300nm, and robust against surrounding environment and temperature. Besides, the use of metal enables it to be very compact and beneficial to thermal dissipation. With this 40um-long absorber, the absorption efficiency can be over 99.8% at …
As an analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) has been realized both in plasmonic metamaterial and waveguide structures. Via near-field coupling within unit cells, PIT with broadband could be produced by plasmonic metamaterials, which, however, has not been realized in on-chip plasmonic waveguide structures. Here, we introduce broadband PIT based on a plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide system. Utilizing the direct coupling structure, PIT emerges based on an easy-fabricated structure without gap. By tuning coupling distance, th…
We introduce the concept of polychromatic plasmonics and suggest an broadband plasmonic lens for nanofocusing of surface plasmon polaritons. The lens employs a parabolically modulated metal-dielectric-metal structure. This plasmonic lens has a bandwidth of more than an optical octave thus opening new opportunities for broadband plasmonic applications.
Ultrafast nanophotonics is an emerging research field aimed at the development of nanodevices capable of light modulation with unprecedented speed. A promising approach exploits the optical nonlinearity of nanostructured materials (either metallic or dielectric) to modulate their effective permittivity via interaction with intense ultrashort laser pulses. While the ultrafast temporal dynamics of such nanostructures following photoexcitation has been studied in depth, sub-ps transient spatial inhomogeneities taking place at the nanoscale have been so far almost ignored. Here we theoretically pr…
We discuss the possibility of realizing utlrabroadband omnidirectional absorbers and angularly selective coherent thermal emitters based on properly patterned plasmonic metastructures. Instead of relying on resonant concentration effects that inherently limit the bandwidth, we base our design on the combination of two inherently nonresonant effects: plasmonic Brewster funneling and adiabatic plasmonic focusing. With this approach, we demonstrate compact, broadband absorption and emission spanning terahertz, infrared and optical frequencies, ideal for various energy and defense applications.
A theory of light reflection and transmission by an optically thin nanocomposite slab which contains randomly distributed metal nanoparticles (NPs) is developed. The underlying model takes into account the reflection of light scattered by NPs from the slab boundaries, enhanced decay of localized surface plasmons in dense NP arrays and light scattering at the slab surface -- the factors which are beyond the scope of the Maxwell Garnett approximation. It is demonstrated that the first two effects lead to broadband perfect absorption observed in such nanocomposites, whereas the last one is respon…
Anomalous resonances in properly shaped plasmonic nanostructures can in principle lead to infinite absorption/gain efficiencies over broad bandwidths. By developing a closed-form analytical solution for the fields scattered by conjoined semicircles, we outline the fundamental physics behind these phenomena, associated with broadband adiabatic focusing of surface plasmons at the nanoscale. We are able to justify the apparent paradox of finite absorption/gain in the limit of infinitesimally small material loss/gain, and we explore the potential of these phenomena in nonlinear optics, spasing, en…

Localized surface plasmon polaritons in conducting structures give rise to enhancements of electromagnetic local fields and extinction efficiencies. Resonant conducting structures are conventionally fabricated with a fixed geometry that determines their plasmonic response. Here, we challenge this conventional approach by demonstrating the photo-generation of plasmonic materials (THz plasmonic antennas) on a flat semiconductor layer by the structured optical illumination through a spatial light modulator. Free charge carriers are photo-excited only on selected areas, which enables the definitio…
Photonic data routing in optical networks overcomes the limitations of electronic routers with respect to data rate, latency, and energy consumption while suffering from dynamic power consumption, non-simultaneous usage of multiple wavelength channels, and large footprints. Here we show the first hybrid photonic-plasmonic, non-blocking, broadband 5x5 router. The compact footprint (<250 μm2) enables high operation speed (480 GHz) requiring only 82 fJ/bit (1.9 dB) of averaged energy consumption (routing loss). The router supports multi-wavelength up to 206 nm in the telecom band. Having a data-c…
Longer near-infrared wavelengths provide better penetration depth in biological tissues, so these are useful for plasmonic photothermal cancer therapeutics. In the context of nanoparticles for such applications, the absorption can be tuned for longer NIR wavelengths. However, on increasing the size of the nanoparticle, the scattering is enhanced and thus is not suitable for plasmonic therapeutics. Therefore, to overcome this issue, different types of small gold nanorods were synthesized and converted into stable aggregates to red-shift the plasmonic resonance wavelength to longer near-infrared…
Surface plasmon polaritons can substantially reduce the sizes of optical devices, since they can concentrate light to (sub)wavelength scales. However, (sub)wavelength-scale electro-optic plasmonic switches or modulators with high efficiency, low insertion loss, and high extinction ratios remain a challenge due to their small active volumes. Here, we use the insulator-metal phase transition of a correlated-electron material, vanadium dioxide, to overcome this limitation and demonstrate compact, broadband, and efficient plasmonic switches with integrated electrical control. The devices are micro…
A novel broadband technique to effectively launch plasmons along a single graphene layer at terahertz (THz) frequencies is proposed. To this end, the coupling of the electromagnetic wave from a readily available plasmonic waveguide established by a periodically corrugated metallic surface to the graphene sheet is proposed. As will be shown, this technique can significantly surmount the need for efficient excitation of plasmons in graphene. For this purpose, an analytical technique based on transmission line theory is employed to calculate the scattering parameters of the connection of the plas…

We unveil a previously overlooked wave propagation regime in magnetized plasmonic (gyrotropic) materials with comparable plasma and cyclotron frequencies, which enables a giant and broadband (nondispersive) nonreciprocal response. We show that this effect is due to a natural form of dispersion compensation that ultimately originates from the subtle implications of the principle of causality for gyrotropic plasmonic media, which allows the existence of a low-loss frequency window with anomalous nonmonotonic dispersion for the extraordinary mode. This is in stark contrast with conventional nongy…
Hot charge carrier extraction from metallic nanostructures is a very promising approach for applications in photo-catalysis, photovoltaics and photodetection. One limitation is that many metallic nanostructures support a single plasmon resonance thus restricting the light-to-charge-carrier activity to a spectral band. Here we demonstrate that a monolayer of plasmonic nanoparticles can be assembled on a multi-stack layered configuration to achieve broad-band, near-unit light absorption, which is spatially localised on the nanoparticle layer. We show that this enhanced light absorbance leads to …
Recently, the implementation of plasmonic nanoantennas has opened new possibilities to investigate the nanoscale dynamics of individual biomolecules in living cell. However, studies have yet been restricted to single molecular species as the narrow wavelength resonance of gold-based nanostructures precludes the simultaneous interrogation of different fluorescently labeled molecules. Here we exploited broadband aluminum-based nanoantennas carved at the apex of near-field probes to resolve nanoscale-dynamic molecular interactions on intact living cell membranes. Through multicolor excitation, we…
Future wireless communication networks have to handle data rates of tens or even hundreds of Gbit/s per link, requiring carrier frequencies in the unallocated terahertz (THz) spectrum. In this context, seamless integration of THz links into existing fiber-optic infrastructures is of great importance to complement the inherent portability and flexibility advantages of wireless networks by the reliable and virtually unlimited capacity of optical transmission systems. On the technological level, this requires novel device and signal processing concepts for direct conversion of data streams betwee…
Complete absorption of electromagnetic waves is paramount in today's applications, ranging from photovoltaics to cross-talk prevention into sensitive devices. In this context, we use a genetic algorithm (GA) strategy to optimize absorption properties of periodic arrays of truncated square-based pyramids made of alternating stacks of metal/dielectric layers. We target ultra-broadband quasi-perfect absorption of normally incident electromagnetic radiations in the visible and near-infrared ranges (wavelength comprised between 420 and 1600 nm). We compare the results one can obtain by considering …
Developing colloidal plasmonic nanomaterials with high carrier density that show optical resonances and photochemical activity extending from the visible to the mid-infrared (MIR) ranges remains a challenging pursuit. Here, we report the fabrication of titanium nitride (TiN) nanobars obtained using a two step procedure based on a wet chemical route synthesis of TiO2 nanowires and their subsequent high temperature annealing in ammonia flow. Electromagnetic simulations of the resulting TiN nanobars reveal a rich set of optical resonances featuring transverse, longitudinal and mixed transverse lo…
We present a hybrid device platform for creating an electrically reconfigurable metasurface formed by the integration of plasmonic nanostructures with phase-change material germanium antimony telluride (GST). By changing the phase of GST from amorphous to crystalline through Joule heating, a large range of responses from the metasurface can be achieved. Furthermore, by using the intermediate phases of GST, the metasurface can interact with the incident light in both over-coupling and under-coupling regimes, leading to an inherently broadband response. Through a detailed investigation of the na…
Plasmonics is an interdisciplinary field focusing on the unique properties of both localized and propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) - quasiparticles in which photons are coupled to the quasi-free electrons of metals. In particular, it allows for confining light in dimensions smaller than the wavelength of photons in free space, and makes it possible to match the different length scales associated with photonics and electronics in a single nanoscale device. Broad applications of plasmonics have been realized including biological sensing, sub-diffraction-limit imaging, focusing and li…
Coherent broadband excitation of plasmons brings ultrafast photonics to the nanoscale. However, to fully leverage this potential for ultrafast nanophotonic applications, the capacity to engineer and control the ultrafast response of a plasmonic system at will is crucial. Here, we develop a framework for systematic control and measurement of ultrafast dynamics of near-field hotspots. We show deterministic design of the coherent response of plasmonic antennas at femtosecond timescales. Exploiting the emerging properties of coupled antenna configurations, we use the calibrated antennas to enginee…
Visible and infrared photons can be detected with a broadband response via the internal photoeffect. By using plasmonic nanostructures, i.e. nanoantennas, wavelength selectivity can be introduced to such detectors through geometry-dependent resonances. Also, additional functionality, like electronic responsivity switching and polarization detection have been realized. However, previous devices consisted of large arrays of nanostructures to achieve detectable photocurrents. Here we show that this concept can be scaled down to a single antenna level, resulting in detector dimensions well below t…
Graphene-based photodetectors, taking advantage of high carrier mobility and broadband absorption in graphene, have recently experienced rapid development. However, their performances with respect to the responsivity and bandwidth are still limited by either weak light-graphene interaction or large resistance-capacitance product. Here, we demonstrate a waveguide coupled integrated graphene plasmonic photodetector on the silicon-on-insulator platform. Benefiting from plasmonic enhanced graphene-light interactions and subwavelength confinement of the optical energy, we present a small-footprint …
We use frequency entangled photons, generated via spontaneous parametric down conversion, to measure the broadband spectral response of an array of gold nanoparticles exhibiting Fano-type plasmon resonance. Refractive index sensing of a liquid is performed by measuring the shift of the array resonance. This method is robust in excessively noisy conditions compared with conventional broadband transmission spectroscopy. Detection of a refractive index change is demonstrated with a noise level 70 times higher than the signal, which is shown to be inaccessible with the conventional transmission sp…

The device holds promises for classical and quantum signal processing. First, the operating principle of the proposed device is detailed in the context of a more general 2x2 lossy coupler formalism. Then, it is shown how to tune the device in a wide region of possible working points, its broadband operation, and the tolerance to fabrication uncertainties. Finally, a complete picture of the electromagnetic modes inside the hybri…
Nanoparticle (NP) arrays of noble metals strongly absorb light in the visible to infrared wavelengths through resonant interactions between the incident electromagnetic field and the metal's free electron plasma. Such plasmonic interfaces enhance light absorption and photocurrent in solar cells. We report a cost effective and scalable room temperature/pressure spin-coating route to fabricate broadband plasmonic interfaces consisting of silver NPs. The NP interface yields photocurrent enhancement (PE) in thin film silicon devices by up to 200% which is significantly greater than previously repo…
In this paper we suggest and theoretically study a tapered plasmonic nanostructure which connects the incident wave beam with a subwavelength spatial region where the field is locally enhanced in a broad frequency range or for different operation frequencies. This spatial region has a frequency stable location near the contour of the tapered structure. This results from a special waveguide mode which can also exist in the tapered structure. We foresee many possible applications for our structure from prospective near-field scanning optical microscopes to interconnects between conventional opti…
A hyperbolic plasmonic surface supports highly directional propagating polaritons with extremely large density of states. Such plasmon polaritons have been realized in artificially structured metasurfaces. However, the upper bound of the achievable plasmon wave vector is limited by the structure size, which calls for a natural hyperbolic surface without any structuring. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a natural hyperbolic plasmonic surface based on thin films of WTe2 in the light wavelength range of 16 to 23 microns by far infrared absorption spectroscopy. The topological transition from t…
We study theoretically the cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) in broadband tapered plasmonic nanoantennas and demonstrate a 300-fold increase in nonlinear frequency conversion detected in the main lobe of the nanoantenna far-field pattern. This is achieved by tuning the elements of the nanoantenna to resonate frequencies involved into the FWM interaction. Our findings have a potentially broad application in ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy, sensing, on-chip optical frequency conversion, nonlinear optical metamaterials and photon sources.

Space-time (ST) wave packets are coherent pulsed beams that propagate diffraction-free and dispersion-free by virtue of tight correlations introduced between their spatial and temporal spectral degrees of freedom. Less is known of the behavior of incoherent ST fields that maintain the spatio-temporal spectral structure of their coherent wave-packet counterparts while losing all purely spatial or temporal coherence. We show here that structuring the spatio-temporal spectrum of an incoherent field produces broadband incoherent ST fields that are diffraction-free. The intensity profile of these f…
The second harmonic generation is one of the most important applications of nonlinear effect, which has attracted great interests in nonlinear optics and microwave in the past decades. To the best of our knowledge, however, generating the second harmonics of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) has not been reported. Here, we propose to generate the second harmonics of spoof SPPs with high efficiency at microwave frequencies using subwavelength-scale nonlinear active device integrated on specially designed plasmonic waveguides, which are composed of two ultrathin corrugated metallic strips printe…
An important source of innovation in nanophotonics is the idea to scale down known radio wave technologies to the optical regime. One thoroughly investigated example of this approach are metallic nanoantennas which employ plasmonic resonances to couple localized emitters to selected far-field modes. While metals can be treated as perfect conductors in the microwave regime, their response becomes Drude-like at optical frequencies. Thus, plasmonic nanoantennas are inherently lossy. Moreover, their resonant nature requires precise control of the antenna geometry. A promising way to circumvent the…
Optoelectronic signal processing offers great potential for generation and detection of ultra-broadband waveforms in the THz range, so-called T-waves. However, fabrication of the underlying high-speed photodiodes and photoconductors still relies on complex processes using dedicated III-V semiconductor substrates. This severely limits the application potential of current T-wave transmitters and receivers, in particular when it comes to highly integrated systems that combine photonic signal processing with optoelectronic conversion to THz frequencies. In this paper, we demonstrate that these lim…
