In an effort to understand the cause of the apparent depletion in the number density of radio-loud AGNs at $z>3$, this work investigates the viability of the so-called Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) quenching mechanism of intrinsically jetted, high-z AGNs, whereby Inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons off electrons within the extended lobes results in a substantial dimming of the lobe synchrotron emission at GHz frequencies, while simultaneously boosting their diffuse X-ray signal. We focus on five $z>3.5$ radio galaxies that have sufficiently deep Chandra exposure (> 50 ks) to warrant a meaningful investigation of any extended X-ray emission. For those objects with evidence for statistically significant extended X-ray lobes (4C 41.17 and 4C 03.24), we combine the Chandra measurements with literature data at lower frequencies to assemble the systems' Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs), and utilize state-of-the-art SED modelling (Ghisellini et al. 2015) -- including emission from the disk, torus, jet, hotspots, and lobes -- to infer their physical parameters. For both radio galaxies, the magnetic energy density in the hotspots is found to exceed the energy density in CMB photons, wheres the opposite is true for the lobes. This implies that any extended synchrotron emission likely originates from the hotspots themselves, rather than the lobes. Conversely, Inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons dominates the extended X-ray emission from the lobes, which are effectively "radio-quenched". As a result, CMB quenching is effective in these systems in spite of the fact that the observed X-ray to radio luminosity ratio does not bear the signature $(1+z)^4$ dependence of the CMB energy density.
We present the space density evolution, from z=1.5 up to z=5.5, of the most massive (M$\geq10^9$M$_{\odot}$) black holes hosted in jetted Active Galactic Nuclei(AGNs). The analysis is based on a sample of 380 luminosity-selected ($λ$L$_{1350}\geq10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and P$_{5\text{GHz}}\geq10^{27}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs) obtained from the Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS). These sources are known to be face-on jetted AGNs (i.e. blazars) and can be exploited to infer the abundance of all the (misaligned) jetted AGNs, using a geometrical argument. We then compare the …

We collect a large sample with a reliable redshift detected by the Fermi satellite after 10 years of data (4FGL-DR2), including blazars, $γ$-ray Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies ($γ$NLS1s), and radio galaxies. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these Fermi sources are fitted by using a second-degree polynomial, and some important parameters including spectral curvature, synchrotron peak frequency, and peak luminosity are obtained. Based on those parameters, we discuss the Fermi blazar sequence and the particle acceleration mechanism. Our main results are as follows:(i) By studying the r…

To quantify the role of radio jets for Intra-Night Optical Variability (INOV) in Radio-Loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (RLNLSy1) galaxies, we report the first systematic comparative INOV study of 23 RLNLSy1 galaxies, with 15 RLNLSy1s having confirmed detection of jets (jetted) and the remaining 8 RLNLSy1s having no detection of jets (non-jetted) based on their Very Long Baseline Array observations. We have monitored these two samples, respectively, in 37 and 16 sessions of a minimum 3-hour duration each. Based upon F$^η$-test at 99\% confidence level with a typical INOV amplitude ($ψ$) detection th…
Radio-Loud (RL) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are among the brightest astrophysical sources at all wavelengths. Their relativistic jets can affect both their Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) growth and the surrounding intergalactic medium. While in the radio band these jets can be observed at all scales (from pc to Mpc scales), their X-ray and γ-ray emission is expected to be concentrated on very small scales (<10 pc). However, after the launch of the Chandra X-ray telescope, several kpc-scale jets were detected and the mechanism responsible for their high-energy radiation at these scales is s…
Following the established view of the AGNs inner workings, an AGN is radio-loud (RL) if associated with relativistic ejections emitting a radio synchrotron spectrum (i.e., a jetted AGN). If large samples of optically-selected quasars are considered, AGNs are identified as RL if their Kellermann's radio loudness ratio RK > 10. Our aims are to characterize the optical properties of different classes based on radio-loudness within the quasar main sequence (MS) and to test whether the condition RK > 10 is sufficient for the identification of RL AGNs. A sample of 355 quasars was selected by cross-c…
We report the systematic analysis of knots, hotspots, and lobes in 57 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to investigate the variation of the magnetic field along with the jet from the sub-pc base to the terminus in kpc-to-Mpc scales. Expanding the number of radio/X-ray samples in Kataoka & Stawarz (2005), we analyzed the data in 12 FR I and 30 FR II radio galaxies, 12 quasars, and 3 BL Lacs that contained 76 knots, 42 hotspots, and 29 radio lobes. We first derived the equipartition magnetic fields in the cores and then estimated those in various jet components by assuming $B_{\rm est}$ $\propto$ $d…
Our understanding of the unification of jetted AGNs has advanced greatly as the size of extragalactic sources increased. In the present paper, based on the large sample of radio sources, we compiled 680 blazars (279 FSRQs and 401 BL Lacs) from the 3FGL sample and 64 Seyfert galaxies (3 Narrow-line, 34 and 27 regular Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 respectively) from the INTEGRAL survey to statistically test the relationship between Seyfert galaxies and the blazar samples of FSRQs and BL Lacs. We compute the synchrotron (SS), Compton (CS) and inverse Compton (IC) continuous spectra from the low energy …
The concept of the evolutionary sequence of jetted active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has been challenged in the last few decades since AGN subclasses are considered to be different due to their viewing angle. In this paper, we collected a sample of 1108 blazars (472 flat-spectrum radio quasars, FSRQs and 636 BL Lacertae objects, BL Lacs) and 120 Seyfert galaxies (SGs) with available redshifts and spectral properties in radio, optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray bands in order to compare the properties of SGs and the blazar subclasses and also explore their possible unification through evolution. It is f…
Studies of the most distant AGNs allow us to test our current understanding of the physics present in radio-jetted AGNs across a range of environments. The decrease in apparent luminosity with distance is the primary difficulty to overcome in the study of these distant AGNs, which requires highly sensitive instruments. Our goal is to employ new long wavelength radio data to better parametrise the broad-band SED of GB 1508+5714, a high-redshift (z=4.30) AGN. Its high redshift, high intrinsic luminosity, and classification as a blazar allow us to test emission models that consider the efficient …
Compact symmetric objects (CSOs) are radio-emitting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) typically with a double-lobed radio structure confined to within 1 kpc. CSOs represent the earliest evolutionary phase of jetted AGNs. Some of them may eventually evolve into large-scale extended double sources, while others stall within the host galaxy and die out, depending on the longevity of nuclear activity, the jet power, and parameters of the surrounding galactic environment. Studying CSOs is a useful tool for understanding the evolution of the galaxies and the interactions between the jets and the medium …
