We study a scenario where sterile neutrino (either warm or cold) dark matter (DM) is produced through (nonresonant) oscillations among right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) and can constitute the whole DM in the Universe, in contrast to the conventional sterile neutrino production through its mixing with the left-handed neutrinos. The lightest RHN can be sterile neutrino DM whose mixing with left-handed neutrinos is sufficiently small while heavier RHNs can have non-negligible mixings with left-handed neutrinos to explain the neutrino masses by the seesaw mechanism. We also demonstrate that, in our scenario, the production of sterile RHN DM from the decay of a heavier RHN is subdominant compared with the RHN oscillation production due to the X-ray and small-scale structure constraints.
The extension of the minimal standard model by three right-handed sterile neutrinos with masses smaller than the electroweak scale (nuMSM) is discussed in a Q_6 flavor symmetry framework. The lightness of the keV sterile neutrino and the near mass degeneracy of two heavier sterile neutrinos are naturally explained by exploiting group properties of Q_6. A normal hierarchical mass spectrum and an approximately mu-tau symmetric mass matrix are predicted for three active neutrinos. Nonzero theta_{13} can be obtained together with a deviation of theta_{23} from the maximality, where both mixing ang…
We show that existing laboratory experiments have the potential to unveil the origin of matter by probing leptogenesis in the type-I seesaw model with three right-handed neutrinos and Majorana masses in the GeV range. The baryon asymmetry is generated by CP-violating flavour oscillations during the production of the right-handed neutrinos. In contrast to the case with only two right-handed neutrinos, no degeneracy in the Majorana masses is required. The right-handed neutrinos can be found in meson decays at BELLE II and LHCb.
The KATRIN experiment aims to determine the absolute neutrino mass by measuring the endpoint region of the tritium $β$ spectrum. As a large-scale experiment with a sharp energy resolution, high source luminosity and low background it may also be capable of testing certain theories of neutrino interactions beyond the standard model (SM). An example of a non-SM interaction are right-handed currents mediated by right-handed W bosons in the left-right symmetric model (LRSM). In this extension of the SM, an additional SU(2)$_\mathrm R$ symmetry in the high-energy limit is introduced, which naturall…

We investigate neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay rates in minimal left-right symmetric models in presence of relatively light right-handed neutrinos. By use of an effective field theory approach, we systematically include all contributions in the model as well as the dependence of the decay amplitude on the masses of right-handed neutrinos. In type-I and type-II seesaw scenarios, we analyze the impact of right-handed neutrinos heavier than about 10 MeV, showing that this effect can lead to a detection of $0νββ$ decay in the next-generation experiments even for the normal hierarchy and a …
The existence of right-handed neutrinos follows from theoretical consistence of the recently suggested electroweak symmetry breaking model, based on dynamical flavor gauge symmetry breaking. Only finite number of versions of the model exists. They differ by the number and the flavor structure of the right-handed neutrinos. We choose for inspection one of them, the non-minimal version with right-handed neutrinos in sextet flavor representation, and at some points we compare it with the minimal version. We show that a Majorana pairing of the sextet right-handed neutrinos is responsible for the f…
Kurie-plot experiments allow for neutrino-mass measurements based on kinematics in an almost model-independent manner. A future tritium-based KATRIN-like experiment can be sensitive to light sterile neutrinos with masses below 18 keV, which are among the prime candidates for warm dark matter. Here we consider such keV neutrinos in left--right symmetric extensions, i.e. coupled to right-handed currents, which allow for an enhanced contribution to beta decay even for small active--sterile mixing, without violating astrophysical X-ray constraints. The modified spectral shape is in principle disti…
We show that a double seesaw framework for neutrino masses with $μ-τ$ exchange symmetry can lead to one of the righthanded seesaw partners of the light neutrinos being massless. This can play the role of a light sterile neutrino, giving a $3+1$ model that explains the LSND results. We get a very economical scheme, which makes it possible to predict the full $4\times 4$ neutrino mass matrix if CP is conserved. Once CP violation is included, effect of the LSND mass range sterile neutrino is to eliminate the lower bound on neutrinoless double beta decay rate which exists for the three neutrino ca…
Can, and under which conditions, the 125-\gev SM-like scalar with the signal strengths for its decays into $W^{+}W^{-}$, $ZZ$, $γγ$, $b \bar{b}$ and $τ\barτ$ being consistent with experiments be accommodated in models that go beyond the Standard Model? Is it truly what it appears to be, namely the SM Higgs boson, or could it be quite different? A minimal extension of the original electroweak-scale right-handed neutrino model, in which right-handed neutrinos naturally obtain electroweak-scale masses, shows a scalar spectrum which includes either the 125-\gev SM-like scalar or a scalar which is …
Neutrinos can have naturally small Dirac masses if the Standard Model singlet right-handed neutrinos are light composite fermions. Theories which produce light composite fermions typically generate many of them, three of which can marry the left-handed neutrinos with small Dirac masses. The rest can serve as sterile states which can mix with the Standard Model neutrinos. We present explicit models illustrating this idea.
We derive the neutrino oscillation probabilities including sterile neutrinos by using the Dirac equation. If neutrinos have both the Dirac and the Majorana mass terms, left-handed neutrino $ν_L$ and right-handed anti-neutrino $ν_R^c$ enter the same multiplet and can transfer each other. Sterile neutrinos have been introduced by hand as the fourth generation neutrino in many papers, however, we can understand sterile neutrinos naturally in the framework of three generations. We also point out that the oscillations into sterile neutrinos strongly suggest the existence of both the Dirac and the M…
The muon-to-electron conversion in nuclei like aluminum, titanium and gold is studied in the context of a class of mirror fermion model with non-sterile right-handed neutrinos having mass at the electroweak scale. At the limit of zero momentum transfer and large mirror lepton masses, we derive a simple formula to relate the conversion rate with the on-shell radiative decay rate of muon into electron. Current experimental limits (SINDRUM II) and projected sensitivities (Mu2e, COMET and PRISM) for the muon-to-electron conversion rates in various nuclei and latest limit from MEG for the radiative…
Considering the gauge model SU(2)_L x U(1) with the extension of the lepton sector by right-handed sterile Majorana neutrinos, we distinguish a "minimal parametric mixing scenario" for a complete matrix of 6 x 6 light (active) and sterile neutrinos, which depends, in addition to experimentally measured physical parameters, only on the masses of sterile neutrinos. For such a scenario, improved cosmological bounds are provided, resulting from the lifetime of sterile neutrinos and the fraction of energy carried by sterile neutrino dark matter.
We construct a flavor symmetry model based on the tetrahedral group A_4 in which the right-handed neutrinos from the seesaw mechanism can be both keV warm dark matter particles and eV-scale sterile neutrinos. This is achieved by giving the right-handed neutrinos appropriate charges under the same Froggatt-Nielsen symmetry responsible for the hierarchy of the charged lepton masses. We discuss the effect of next-to-leading order corrections to deviate the zeroth order tri-bimaximal mixing. Those corrections have two sources: (i) higher order seesaw terms, which are important when the seesaw part…
We investigate baryogenesis in the $ν$MSM (neutrino Minimal Standard Model), which is the MSM extended by three right-handed neutrinos with masses below the electroweak scale. The baryon asymmetry of the universe can be generated by the mechanism via flavor oscillation of right-handed (sterile) neutrinos which are responsible to masses of active neutrinos confirmed by various experiments. We present the kinetic equations for the matrix of densities of leptons which describe the generation of asymmetries. Especially, the momentum dependence of the matrix of densities is taken into account. By s…
We provide a comprehensive study of observable spectra from dark matter pair-annihilation or decay into sterile (right-handed) neutrinos. This occurs, for instance, in neutrino portal dark matter models, where a sterile neutrino acts as the portal between dark matter and the Standard Model sector. The subsequent decays of right-handed neutrinos produce detectable Standard Model particles, notably photons, positrons, and neutrinos. We study the phenomenology of models where the right-handed neutrino masses are below the GeV scale, as well as models where they are at, or significantly heavier th…
We implement a schizophrenic scenario for the active neutrinos in a model in which there are also exotic right-handed neutrinos making a model with a local U(1)_(B-L) anomaly free. Two of right-handed neutrinos carry B-L=-4 while the third one carries B-L=5.
The electric dipole moment of the electron is studied in detail in an extended mirror fermion model with the following unique features of (a) right-handed neutrinos are non-sterile and have masses at the electroweak scale, and (b) a horizontal symmetry of the tetrahedral group is used in the lepton and scalar sectors. We study the constraint on the parameter space of the model imposed by the latest ACME experimental limit on electron electric dipole moment. Other low energy experimental observables such as the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of the muon, charged lepton flavor violating proces…
We propose new searches that exploit the unique signatures of decaying sterile neutrinos with masses below $M_W$ at the LHC, where they can be produced in rare decays of Standard Model gauge bosons. We show that for few-GeV-scale sterile neutrinos, the LHC experiments can probe mixing angles at the level of $10^{-4}-10^{-3}$ through powerful searches that look for prompt leptons in association with displaced lepton jets. For higher-mass sterile neutrinos, ${\it i.e.}$, $M_N \gtrsim 15$ GeV, Run II can explore similarly small mixing angles in prompt multilepton final states. This represents an …
Light sterile neutrinos of mass about an eV with mixing $\tilde U_{ls}$ of a few percent to active neutrinos may solve some anomalies shown in experimental data related to neutrino oscillation. How to have light sterile neutrinos is one of the theoretical problems which have attracted a lot of attentions. In this article we show that such an eV scale light sterile neutrino candidate can be obtained in a seesaw model in which the right-handed neutrinos satisfy a softly-broken Friedberg-Lee (FL) symmetry. In this model a right-handed neutrino is guaranteed by the FL symmetry to be light comparin…
Usually considered a background for experimental searches for the hypothetical neutrinoless double beta decay process, two-neutrino double beta decay nevertheless provides a complementary probe of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper we investigate how the presence of a sterile neutrino, coupled to the Standard Model either via a left-handed or right-handed current, affects the energy distribution and angular correlation of the outgoing electrons in two-neutrino double beta decay. We pay particular attention on the behaviour of the energy distribution at the kinematic endpoint and …
We show that active neutrino masses and a keV-GeV mass sterile neutrino dark matter candidate can result from a modified, low energy seesaw mechanism if right-handed neutrinos are charged under a new symmetry broken by a scalar field vacuum expectation value at the PeV scale. The dark matter relic abundance can be obtained through active-sterile oscillation, freeze-in through the decay of the heavy scalar, or freeze-in via non-renormalizable interactions at high temperatures. The low energy effective theory maps onto the widely studied nuMSM framework.
It is known that a keV scale sterile neutrino is a good warm dark matter candidate. We study how this possibility could be realized in the context of gauge extensions of the standard model. The naïve expectation leads to large thermal overproduction of sterile neutrinos in this setup. However, we find that it is possible to use out-of-equilibrium decay of the other right-handed neutrinos of the model to dilute the present density of the keV sterile neutrinos and achieve the observed dark matter density. We present the universal requirements that should be satisfied by the gauge extensions of t…
We study the production of sterile neutrinos in the region $T\sim M_W$ in an extension beyond the standard model with the see-saw mass matrix originating in Yukawa couplings to Higgs-like scalars with masses and vev's of the order of the electroweak scale. Sterile neutrinos are produced by the decay of scalars and standard model vector bosons. We obtain the index of refraction, dispersion relations, mixing angles in the medium and production rates including those for right-handed sterile neutrinos, from the standard model and beyond the standard model self-energies. For $1 \lesssim M_W/T \less…
We present a class of left-right symmetric models where Dirac as well as Majorana mass terms of neutrinos can arise at one-loop level in a scotogenic fashion: with dark matter particles going inside the loop. We show the possibility of naturally light right handed neutrinos that can have interesting implications at neutrinoless double beta decay experiments as well as cosmology. Apart from a stable dark matter candidate stabilised by a remnant $Z_2$ symmetry, one can also have a long lived keV sterile neutrino dark matter in these models. This class of models can have very different collider s…
Sterile neutrino dark matter of mass O(1-10) keV decays into an active neutrino and an X-ray photon, and the non-observation of the corresponding X-ray line requires the sterile neutrino to be more long-lived than estimated based on the seesaw formula : the longevity problem. We show that, if one or more of the B-L Higgs fields are charged under a flavor symmetry (or discrete R symmetry), the split mass spectrum for the right-handed neutrinos as well as the required longevity is naturally realized. We provide several examples in which the predicted the X-ray flux is just below the current boun…
The recent recomputation of the neutrino fluxes from nuclear reactors relaxes the tension between the LSND and MiniBooNE anomalies and disappearance data when interpreted in terms of sterile neutrino oscillations. The simplest extension of the Standard Model with such fermion singlets is the addition of right-handed sterile neutrinos with small Majorana masses. Even when introducing three right-handed neutrinos, this scenario has less free parameters than the 3+2 scenarios studied in the literature. This begs the question whether the best fit regions obtained can be reproduced by this simplest…
We consider a Mass Varying Neutrinos (MaVaNs) model in supersymmetric theory. The model includes effects of supersymmetry breaking transmitted by the gravitational interaction from the hidden sector, in which supersymmetry was broken, to the dark energy sector. Then evolutions of the neutrino mass and the equation of state parameter of the dark energy are presented in the model. It is remarked that only the mass of a sterile neutrino is variable in the case of the vanishing mixing between the left-handed and a sterile neutrino on cosmological time scale. The finite mixing makes the mass of the…
It has been pointed out in ref.[1] that in the nuMSM (Standard Model extended by three right-handed neutrinos with masses smaller than the electroweak scale), there is a corner in the parameter space where CP-violating resonant oscillations among the two heaviest right-handed neutrinos continue to operate below the freeze-out temperature of sphaleron transitions, leading to a lepton asymmetry which is considerably larger than the baryon asymmetry. Consequently, the lightest right-handed (``sterile'') neutrinos, which may serve as dark matter, are generated through an efficient resonant mechani…
The super-weak model is a U(1) extension of the Standard Model. In addition to a mediator $Z'$, a singlet scalar field $χ$ is added to deal with the meta-stability of the SM vacuum, and right-handed neutrinos are introduced to account for the non-vanishing neutrino masses. We demonstrate that the lightest right-handed neutrino is a possible dark matter candidate with masses of $\mathcal{O}(10)~\mathrm{MeV}$ via the resonant freeze-out scenario. The dark matter production is explored and the available parameter space is discussed from the point of view of various experiments and beyond SM aspec…
We show that, leaving aside accelerated cosmic expansion, all experimental data in high energy physics that are commonly agreed to require physics beyond the Standard Model can be explained when completing it by three right handed neutrinos that can be searched for using current day experimental techniques. The model that realises this scenario is known as Neutrino Minimal Standard Model (νMSM). In this article we give a comprehensive summary of all known constraints in the νMSM, along with a pedagogical introduction to the model. We present the first complete quantitative study of the paramet…
We discuss a model where a mixed warm and hot keV neutrino dark matter rises naturally. We arrange active and sterile neutrinos in the same $SU(3)_L$ multiplet, with the lightest sterile neutrino being dark matter. The other two heavy sterile neutrinos, through their out-of-equilibrium decay, contribute both to the dilution of dark matter density and its population, after freeze-out. We show that this model features all ingredients to overcome the overproduction of keV neutrino dark matter, and explore the phenomenological implications for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and the number of relativisti…
We study the phenomenology of a light (GeV scale) sterile neutrino sector and the pseudo-Goldstone boson (not the majoron) associated with a global symmetry in this sector that is broken at a high scale. Such scenarios can be motivated from considerations of singlet fermions from a hidden sector coupling to active neutrinos via heavy right-handed seesaw neutrinos, effectively giving rise to a secondary, low-energy seesaw framework. Such scenarios allow for rich phenomenology with observable implications for cosmology, dark matter, and direct searches, involving novel sterile neutrino dark matt…
Model-building issues raised by the prospect of light sterile neutrinos are discussed in a pedagogical way. I first review the na\"ıve proposal that sterile neutrinos be identified with ``right handed neutrinos''. A critical discussion of the simple expedient of adding three gauge singlet fermions to the usual minimal standard model matter content is followed by an examination of right handed neutrinos in extended theories. I introduce the terminology of ``fully sterile'' and ``weakly sterile'' to classify varieties usually conflated under the sterile neutrino banner. After introducing the con…
We consider the minimal extended seesaw model which can accommodate an eV scale sterile neutrino. The scenario also includes three heavy right handed neutrinos in addition to the light sterile neutrino. In this model, the active-sterile mixing act as non-unitary parameters. If the values of these mixing angles are of $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$, the model introduces deviation of the PMNS matrix from unitarity to this order. We find that the oscillation data from various experiments imposes an upper bound on the lightest heavy neutrino mass scale as $\sim 10^{11}$ GeV in the context of this model. We st…
The standard model Higgs quartic coupling vanishes at $(10^{9}-10^{13})$ GeV. We study $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$ theories that incorporate the Higgs Parity mechanism, where this becomes the scale of Left-Right symmetry breaking, $v_R$. Furthermore, these theories solve the strong CP problem and predict three right-handed neutrinos. We introduce cosmologies where $SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge interactions produce right-handed neutrinos via the freeze-out or freeze-in mechanisms. In both cases, we find the parameter space where the lightest right-handed neutrino is dark matt…
A recently proposed asymmetric mirror dark matter model where the mirror sector is connected with the visible one by a right handed neutrino portal, is shown to lead naturally to a 3+1 active-sterile neutrino spectrum, if the portal consists only of two right handed neutrinos. At the tree level the model has four massless neutrino states, three active and one sterile. The active neutrinos pick up tiny masses via the minimal radiative inverse seesaw mechanism at the one loop level. The loop effects also generate the large solar and atmospheric mixings, as well as the observed reactor mixing for…
We explore scenarios where the $R(D^{(*)})$ anomalies arise from semitauonic decays to a right-handed sterile neutrino. We perform an EFT study of all five simplified models capable of generating at tree-level the lowest dimension electroweak operators that give rise to this decay. We analyze their compatibility with current $R(D^{(*)})$ data and other relevant hadronic branching ratios, and show that one simplified model is excluded by this analysis. The remainder are compatible with collider constraints on the mediator semileptonic branching ratios, provided the mediator mass is of order TeV…
We analyze leptogenesis in gauge extensions of the Standard Model with keV sterile neutrino dark matter. We find that both the observed dark matter abundance and the correct baryon asymmetry of the Universe can simultaneously emerge in these models. Both the dark matter abundance and the leptogenesis are controlled by the out of equilibrium decays of the same heavy right handed neutrino.
The usual see-saw mechanism for the generation of light neutrino masses is based on the assumption that all of the flavours of right-handed (more properly, sterile) neutrinos are heavy. If the sterile Majorana mass matrix is singular, one or more of the sterile neutrinos will have zero mass before mixing with the active (left-handed) neutrinos and be light after that mixing is introduced. In particular, a rank 1 sterile mass matrix leads naturally to two pseudo-Dirac pairs, one very light active Majorana neutrino and one heavy sterile Majorana neutrino. For any pattern of Dirac masses, there e…
The seesaw mechanism in models with extra dimensions is shown to be generically consistent with a broad range of Majorana masses. The resulting democracy of scales implies that the seesaw mechanism can naturally explain the smallness of neutrino masses for an arbitrarily small right-handed neutrino mass. If the scales of the seesaw parameters are split, with two right-handed neutrinos at a high scale and one at a keV scale, one can explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe, as well as dark matter. The dark matter candidate, a sterile right-handed neutrino with mass of several keV…
We add a singlet right handed neutrino plus a charged and a neutral singlet scalars to the standard model. This extension includes a discrete symmetry such that we obtain a heavy sterile neutrino which couples only to the electron and the new scalars. In this sense the singlet neutrino does not mix with ordinary ones and thus has no effect on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. However, such sterile neutrino can be in equilibrium with electroweak particles in the early Universe due to its couplings to electrons and also because the Higgs boson mixes with the singlet scalars. We obtain that the sterile n…
We consider an extension of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model by three right-handed neutrinos and a pair of neutrinophilic Higgs superfields. The small neutrino masses arise naturally from a small vacuum expectation value of the additional Higgs fields (hence without lepton number violation), while the lightest right-handed sneutrinos can constitute asymmetric Dark Matter. The right-handed sneutrino and baryon asymmetries are connected through equilibrium processes in the early universe, explaining the coincidence of the DM and baryon abundances. We show that particle physics a…
Neutrino masses are likely to be a manifestation of the right-handed, or sterile neutrinos. The number of sterile neutrinos and the scales of their Majorana masses are unknown. We explore theoretical arguments in favor of the high and low scale seesaw mechanisms, review the existing experimental results, and discuss the astrophysical hints regarding sterile neutrinos.
We present a comprehensive overview of an extension of the Standard Model that contains three right-handed (sterile) neutrinos with masses below the electroweak scale [the Neutrino Minimal Standard Model, (nuMSM)]. We consider the history of the Universe from the inflationary era through today and demonstrate that most of the observed phenomena beyond the Standard Model can be explained within the framework of this model. We review the mechanism of baryon asymmetry of the Universe in the nuMSM and discuss a dark matter candidate that can be warm or cold and satisfies all existing constraints. …
Candidates for unfication of the electroweak and strong interactions include the grand unified groups SU(5), SO(10), and the exceptional group E6. The 27-dimensional fundamental representation of E6 contains exotic fermions, including weak isosinglet quarks of charge -1/3, vector-like weak isodoublet leptons, and neutral leptons which are singlets under both left-handed and right-handed SU(2). These last are candidates for light "sterile" neutrinos, hinted at by some recent short-baseline neutrino experiments. In order to accommodate three families of quarks and charged leptons, an E6 model mu…
The fate of R-parity is one of the central issues in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). Gauged $B-L$ symmetry provides a natural framework for addressing this question. Recently, it was pointed out that the minimal such theory does not need any additional Higgs if the $B-L$ breaking is achieved through the VEVs of right-handed sneutrinos, which ties the new physics scale to the scale of the MSSM. We show here that this immediately leads to an important prediction of two light sterile neutrinos, which can play a significant role in the BBN and neutrino oscillations. We also discu…
We consider the thermal effects into the evaluation of the dark matter production process. With the assistance of the right handed neutrinos, the freeze-in massive particle dark matter production history can be modified by the two-step phase transitions. The kinematic of decay/inverse decay or annihilation processes can be affected by the finite temperature effects as the Universe cools down. The history of the symmetry respected by the model can be revealed by the DM relic abundance evolution processes. The strong first order electroweak phase transition generated gravitational waves can be p…

We analyze the neutrino phenomenology in an $SU(5)$ F-theory model with both a visible sector and a twin hidden sector. At low energies, the strong and weak scales of the two sectors may differ but the spectrum of states is described by the MSSM (MSSM$^\prime$) in the visible (twin) sectors. What is special about the model is that there are right-handed neutrinos which couple to both sectors via Yukawa couplings. As a result, assuming 3 right-handed neutrinos with a large mass much greater than the weak scale, at tree-level the seesaw mechanism results in 3 massive Majorana neutrinos and 3 mas…
We provide an ultraviolet (UV) complete model for the $R(D^{(*)})$ anomalies, in which the additional contribution to semi-tauonic $b \to c$ transitions arises from decay to a right-handed sterile neutrino via exchange of a TeV-scale $SU(2)_L$ singlet $W'$. The model is based on an extension of the Standard Model (SM) hypercharge group, $U(1)_Y$, to the $SU(2)_V\times U(1)'$ gauge group, containing several pairs of heavy vector-like fermions. We present a comprehensive phenomenological survey of the model, ranging from the low-energy flavor physics, direct searches at the LHC, to neutrino phys…
