The current work generalizes the author's previous work on the infinite-dimensional Alpha Log-Determinant (Log-Det) divergences and Alpha-Beta Log-Det divergences, defined on the set of positive definite unitized trace class operators on a Hilbert space, to the entire Hilbert manifold of positive definite unitized Hilbert-Schmidt operators. This generalization is carried out via the introduction of the extended Hilbert-Carleman determinant for unitized Hilbert-Schmidt operators, in addition to the previously introduced extended Fredholm determinant for unitized trace class operators. The resulting parametrized family of Alpha-Beta Log-Det divergences is general and contains many divergences between positive definite unitized Hilbert-Schmidt operators as special cases, including the infinite-dimensional affine-invariant Riemannian distance and the infinite-dimensional generalization of the symmetric Stein divergence.
This work presents a parametrized family of distances, namely the Alpha Procrustes distances, on the set of symmetric, positive definite (SPD) matrices. The Alpha Procrustes distances provide a unified formulation encompassing both the Bures-Wasserstein and Log-Euclidean distances between SPD matrices. We show that the Alpha Procrustes distances are the Riemannian distances corresponding to a family of Riemannian metrics on the manifold of SPD matrices, which encompass both the Log-Euclidean and Wasserstein Riemannian metrics. This formulation is then generalized to the set of positive definit…
We present a derivation of classical Hermite, Laguerre, and Jacobi orthogonal polynomials directly through the Gram-Schmidt orthogonization process. The derivation uses certain generalized Vandermonde determinants with entries defined by Gamma and Beta functions. We also provide a geometric formulation of Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization using the Hodge star operator.
In this paper the geometric mean of partial positive definite matrices with missing entries is considered. The weighted geometric mean of two sets of positive matrices is defined, and we show whether such a geometric mean holds certain properties which the weighted geometric mean of two positive definite matrices satisfies. Additionally, counterexamples demonstrate that certain properties do not hold. A Loewner order on partial Hermitian matrices is also defined. The known results for the maximum determinant positive completion are developed with an integral representation, and the results are…
We prove inequalities on symmetric tensor sums of positive definite operators. In particular, we prove multivariable operator inequalities inspired by generalizations to the well-known Hlawka and Popoviciu inequalities. As corollaries, we obtain generalized Hlawka and Popoviciu inequalities for determinants, permanents, and generalized matrix functions. The new operator inequalities and their corollaries contain a few recently published inequalities on positive definite matrices as special cases.
Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion and distance covariance are methods to describe independence of random variables using either the Kronecker product of positive definite kernels or the Kronecker product of conditionally negative definite kernels. In this paper we generalize both methods by providing an independence criteria using a new concept, of positive definite independent kernels. We provide a characterization of the radial kernels that are positive definite independent on all Euclidean spaces and we present several examples.
It is known that every complex square matrix with nonnegative determinant is the product of positive semi-definite matrices. There are characterizations of matrices that require two or five positive semi-definite matrices in the product. However, the characterizations of matrices that require three or four positive semi-definite matrices in the product are lacking. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of these two types of matrices. With these results, we give an algorithm to determine whether a square matrix can be expressed as the product of $k$ positive semi-definite matrices …
This work presents a parametrized family of divergences, namely Alpha-Beta Log- Determinant (Log-Det) divergences, between positive definite unitized trace class operators on a Hilbert space. This is a generalization of the Alpha-Beta Log-Determinant divergences between symmetric, positive definite matrices to the infinite-dimensional setting. The family of Alpha-Beta Log-Det divergences is highly general and contains many divergences as special cases, including the recently formulated infinite dimensional affine-invariant Riemannian distance and the infinite-dimensional Alpha Log-Det divergen…
Suppose a map $ϕ$ on the set of positive definite matrices satisfies $\det(A+B)=\det(ϕ(A)+ϕ(B))$. Then we have $${\rm tr}(AB^{-1}) = {\rm tr}(ϕ(A){ϕ(B)}^{-1}).$$ Through this viewpoint, we show that $ϕ$ is of the form $ϕ(A)= M^*AM$ or $ϕ(A)= M^*A^tM$ for some invertible matrix $M$ with $\det (M^*M)=1$. We also characterize the map $ϕ: \mathcal{S} \rightarrow \mathcal{S}$ preserving the determinant of convex combinations in $\mathcal{S}$ by using similar method. Here $\mathcal{S}$ can be the set of complex matrices, positive definite matrices, symmetric matrices, and upper triangular matrices.
In this paper we determine the asymptotics of the determinant of Bessel operators for sufficiently smooth generating functions. These operators are similar to Wiener-Hopf operators with the Fourier transform replaced by the Hankel transform and thus the asymptotics of the determinanst are similar to the well-known Szegö-Akhiezer-Kac formula for truncated Wiener-Hopf determinants. In order to compute the above, we also show that the Bessel operators differ from the Wiener-Hopf by a Hilbert-Schmidt operator.
Hadamard's determinant inequality was refined and generalized by Zhang and Yang in [Acta Math. Appl. Sinica 20 (1997) 269-274]. Some special cases of the result were rediscovered recently by Rozanski, Witula and Hetmaniok in [Linear Algebra Appl. 532 (2017) 500-511]. We revisit the result in the case of positive semidefinite matrices, giving a new proof in terms of majorization and a complete description of the conditions for equality in the positive definite case. We also mention a block extension, which makes use of a result of Thompson in the 1960s.
We study the class of Hankel matrices for which the $k\times k$-block-matrices are positive semi-definite. We prove that a $k\times k$-block-matrix has non zero determinant if and only if all $k\times k$-block matrices have non zero determinant. We use this result to extend the notion of propagation phenomena to $k$-hyponormal weighted shifts. Finally we give a study on invariance of $k$-hyponormal weighted shifts under one rank perturbation.
This work presents an infinite-dimensional generalization of the correspondence between the Kullback-Leibler and Rényi divergences between Gaussian measures on Euclidean space and the Alpha Log-Determinant divergences between symmetric, positive definite matrices. Specifically, we present the regularized Kullback-Leibler and Rényi divergences between covariance operators and Gaussian measures on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, which are defined using the infinite-dimensional Alpha Log-Determinant divergences between positive definite trace class operators. We show that, as the regulariz…
We introduce and give a more or less complete study of a family of branching-Toeplitz operators on the Hilbert space $\ell^2(T_q)$ indexed by a rooted homogeneous tree $T_q$ of degree $q\ge 2$. The finite dimensional analogues of such operators form a very natural family of structured sparse matrices called branching-Toeplitz matrices and will also be investigated. The branching-Toeplitz operators/matrices in this paper should be viewed as natural generalizations of the standard Toeplitz operators/matrices. We will apply our results to construct a family of determinantal point processes on hom…
In this paper we study the monotonicity, in-betweenness and in-sphere properties of matrix means with respect to Bures-Wasserstein, Hellinger and Log-Determinant metrics. More precisely, we show that the matrix power means (Kubo-Ando and non-Kubo-Ando extensions) satisfy the in-betweenness property in the Hellinger metric. We also show that for two positive definite matrices $A$ and $B$, the curve of weighted Heron means, the geodesic curve of the arithmetic and the geometric mean lie inside the sphere centered at the geometric mean with the radius equal to half of the Log-Determinant distance…
Some subadditivity results involving symmetric (unitarily invariant) norms are obtained. For instance, if $g(t)=\sum_{k=0}^m a_kt^k$ is a polynomial of degree $m$ with non-negative coefficients, then, for all positive operators $A,\,B$ and all symmetric norms, $\|g(A+B)\|^{1/m} \le \|g(A)\|^{1/m} + \|g(B)\|^{1/m}$. To give parallel superadditivity results, we investigate anti-norms, a class of functionals containing the Schatten $q$-norms for $q\in(0,1]$ and $q<0$. The results are extensions of the Minkowski determinantal inequality. A few estimates for block-matrices are derived. For instance…
We study the analog of semi-separable integral kernels in $\mathcal{H}$ of the type $$ K(x,x')=\begin{cases} F_1(x)G_1(x'), & a<x'< x< b, \\ F_2(x)G_2(x'), & a<x<x'<b, \end{cases} $$ where $-\infty\leq a<b\leq \infty$, and for a.e.\ $x \in (a,b)$, $F_j (x) \in \mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H}_j,\mathcal{H})$ and $G_j(x) \in \mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H},\mathcal{H}_j)$ such that $F_j(\cdot)$ and $G_j(\cdot)$ are uniformly measurable, and $$ \|F_j(\cdot)\|_{\mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H}_j,\mathcal{H})} \in L^2((a,b)), \; \|G_j (\cdot)\|_{\mathcal{B}_2(\mathcal{H},\mathcal{H}_j)} \in L^2((a,b)), \quad j=1,2, $…
Let $A, B$ be positive definite matrices, $p=1, 2$ and $r\ge 0$. It is shown that \begin{equation*} ||A+ B + r(A\sharp_t B+A\sharp_{1-t} B)||_p \le ||A+ B + r(A^{t}B^{1-t} + A^{1-t}B^t)||_p. \end{equation*} We also prove that for positive definite matrices $A$ and $B$ \begin{equation*}\label{det} \Dt (P_{t}(A, B)) \le \Dt (Q_{t}(A, B)), \end{equation*} where $Q_t(A, B)= \big(\frac{A^t+B^t}{2}\big)^{1/t}$ and $P_t(A, B)$ is the $t$-power mean of $A$ and $B$. As a consequence, we obtain the determinant inequality for the matrix Heron mean: for any positive definite matrices $A$ and $B,$ $$ \Dt(A…
