Our aim is to derive a self-consistent age, distance and composition for the globular cluster $47\,$Tucanae ($47\,$Tuc; NGC104). First, we reevaluate the reddening towards the cluster resulting in a nominal $E(B-V)=0.03\pm0.01$ as the best estimate. The $T_{\rm eff}$ of the components of the eclipsing binary member V69 is found to be $5900\pm72$ K from both photometric and spectroscopic evidence. This yields a true distance modulus $(m-M)_0=13.21\pm0.06$(random)$ \pm0.03 $(systematic) to $47\,$Tuc when combined with existing measurements of V69 radii and luminosity ratio. We then present a new completely self-consistent isochrone fitting method to ground based and $\textit{HST}$ cluster colour-magnitude diagrams and the eclipsing binary member V69. The analysis suggests that the composition of V69, and by extension one of the populations of $47\,$Tuc, is given by [Fe/H]$\sim-0.70$, [O/Fe]$\sim+0.60$, and $Y\sim0.250$ on the solar abundance scale of Asplund, Grevesse & Sauval. However, this depends on the accuracy of the model $T_{\rm eff}$ scale which is 50-75 K cooler than our best estimate but within measurement uncertainties. Our best estimate of the age of $47\,$Tuc is 11.8 Gyr, with firm ($3 σ$) lower and upper limits of 10.4 and 13.4 Gyr, respectively, in satisfactory agreement with the age derived from the white dwarf cooling sequence if our determination of the distance modulus is adopted.
Age constraints are most often placed on globular clusters by comparing their CMDs with theoretical isochrones. The recent discoveries of detached, eclipsing binaries in such systems by the Cluster AgeS Experiment (CASE) provide new insights into their ages and, at the same time, much needed tests of stellar evolution models. We describe efforts to model the properties of the detached, eclipsing binary V69 in 47 Tuc and compare age constraints derived from stellar evolution models of V69A and B with ages obtained from fitting isochrones to the cluster CMD. We determine, under reasonable assump…
We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary E32 in the globular cluster 47 Tuc to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. The system has an orbital period of 40.9 d, a markedly eccentric orbit with e = 0.24, and is shown to be a member of or a recent escaper from the cluster. We obtain Mp = 0.862(5) Msun , Rp = 1.183(3) Rsun , Lp = 1.65(5) Lsun for the primary and Ms = 0.827(5) Msun , Rs = 1.004(4) Rsun , Ls = 1.14(4) Lsun for the secondary. Based on these data and on an earlier analysis of the binary V69 in 47 Tuc we measure the distanc…
Precise studies on the Galactic bulge, globular cluster, Galactic halo and Galactic thick disk require stellar models with alpha enhancement and various values of helium content. These models are also important for extra-Galactic population synthesis studies. For this purpose, we complement the existing PARSEC models, which are based on the solar partition of heavy elements, with alpha-enhanced partitions. We collect detailed measurements on the metal mixture and helium abundance for the two populations of 47 Tuc (NGC 104) from the literature, and calculate stellar tracks and isochrones with t…
We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary V69-47 Tuc to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. Based on measured systemic velocity, distance, and proper motion, the system is a member of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. The system has an orbital period of 29.5 d and the orbit is slightly eccentric with e=0.056. We obtain Mp=0.8762 +- 0.0048 M(Sun), Rp=1.3148 +-0.0051 R(Sun), Lp=1.94 +- 0.21 L(Sun) for the primary and Ms=0.8588 +- 0.0060 M(Sun), Rs=1.1616 +- 0.0062 R(Sun), Ls=1.53 +- 0.17 L(Sun) for the secondary. These components of V69 a…
Based on over 5400 BV images of 47 Tuc collected between 1998 and 2010 we obtained light curves of 65 variables, 21 of which are newly detected objects. New variables are located mostly just outside of the core in a region poorly studied by earlier surveys of the cluster. Among them there are four detached eclipsing binaries and five likely optical counterparts of X-ray sources. Two detached systems are promising targets for follow-up observations. We briefly discuss properties of the most interesting new variables.
High-precision stellar mass and radius measured directly from binaries can effectively calibrate the stellar models. However, such a database containing full spectral types and large range of metallicity is still not fully established. A continuous effort of data collecting and analysis are requested to complete the database. In this work, we provide a catalog containing 184 binaries with independent atmospheric parameters and accurate masses and radii as the benchmark of stellar mass and radius. The catalog contains 56 new detached binaries from LAMOST Medium-resolution spectroscopic (MRS) su…
We present the first results of a project aiming to trace the spatial structure of the Milky Way using detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) as distance indicators. A sample of DEBs from the OGLE-II catalogue was selected and their near infrared photometry was taken from the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey. The I band OGLE-II light curves are used to create models of the DEBs, which together with the VVV photometry are compared with a set of theoretical isochrones. After correcting for stellar reddening, we find a set of absolute physical parameters of components of a given binary,…
Westerlund 1 (Wd 1) is one of the most relevant star clusters in the Milky Way to study massive star formation, although it is still poorly known. Here, we used photometric and spectroscopic data to model the eclipsing binary W36, showing that its spectral type is O6.5 III + O9.5 IV, hotter and more luminous than thought before. Its distance $d_{\rm W36}$ $=$ 4.03$\pm$0.25 kpc agrees, within the errors, with three recent Gaia-EDR3-based distances reported in Paper I, Beasor & Davies, and by Negueruela's group. However, they follow different approaches to fix the zero-points for red sources suc…
Absolute ages of young stars are important for many issues in pre-main sequence stellar and circumstellar evolution but are long recognized as difficult to derive and calibrate. In this paper, we use literature spectral types and photometry to construct empirical isochrones in HR diagrams for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the eta Cha, epsilon Cha, and TW Hya Associations and the beta Pic and Tuc-Hor Moving Groups. A successful theory of pre-main sequence evolution should match the shapes of the stellar loci for these groups of young stars. However, when comparing the combined empirical is…
We present the analysis of an eccentric, partially eclipsing long-period ($P=19.23$ d) binary system KIC 9777062 that contains main sequence stars near the turnoff of the intermediate age open cluster NGC 6811. The primary is a metal-lined Am star with a possible convective blueshift to its radial velocities, and one star (probably the secondary) is likely to be a $γ$ Dor pulsator. The component masses are $1.603\pm0.006$(stat.)$\pm0.016$(sys.) and $1.419\pm0.003\pm0.008 M_\odot$, and the radii are $1.744\pm0.004\pm0.002$ and $1.544\pm0.002\pm0.002 R_\odot$. The isochrone ages of the stars are…
Stellar models for -2.5 <= [Fe/H] <= -0.5 that have been computed for variations in the C:N:O abundance ratio (for two different values of [CNO/Fe]) are compared with HST Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) observations of the globular clusters (GCs) 47 Tuc, NGC 6362, M5, M5, M55, and M92. The bolometric corrections used to transpose the models to the observed planes are based on new MARCS synthetic spectra that incorporate improved treatments of molecules that involve atoms of C, N, and O. On the assumption of well-supported distance moduli and reddenings, isochrones for [O/Fe] = 0.6 and [m/Fe] = 0.4 …
We determine the absolute dimensions of the eclipsing binary V578 Mon, a detached system of two early B-type stars (B0V + B1V, P$=$2.40848 d) in the star-forming region NGC 2244 of the Rosette Nebula. From the light curve analysis of 40 yr of photometry and the analysis of HERMES spectra, we find radii of $5.41\pm0.04$ Rsun and $4.29\pm 0.05$ Rsun, and temperatures of $ 30000\pm 500$~K and $ 25750\pm 435$ K respectively. We find that our disentangled component spectra for V578 Mon agree well previous spectral disentangling from the literature. We also reconfirm the previous spectroscopic orbit…
Young brown dwarfs share many properties with directly imaged giant extrasolar planets. They therefore provide unique laboratories for investigating the full range of temperature and mass encompasses by the growing collection of planets discovered outside our Solar System. Furthermore, if they can be tied to a particular group of coeval stars, they also provide vital anchor points for low-mass empirical isochrones. We have developed a novel procedure for identifying such objects based on their unique 2MASS and AllWISE colors. Using our search criteria, we have identified 50 new, late-type L dw…
We present the results of our analysis of KIC 4150611 (HD 181469) - an interesting, bright quintuple system that includes a hybrid $δ$ Sct/$γ$ Dor pulsator. Four periods of eclipses - 94.2, 8.65, 1.52 and 1.43 d - have been observed by the Kepler satellite, and three point sources (A, B, and C) are seen in high angular resolution images. From spectroscopic observations made with the HIDES spectrograph attached to the 1.88-m telescope of the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO), for the first time we calculated radial velocities (RVs) of the component B - a pair of G-type stars - and combine…
High-resolution Hubble Space Telescope optical observations have been used to analyze the stellar population and the structure of the poorly investigated bulge globular cluster NGC 6316. We constructed the first high-resolution reddening map in the cluster direction, which allowed us to correct the evolutionary sequences in the color magnitude diagram (CMD) for the effects of differential reddening. A comparison between the CMDs of NGC 6316 and 47 Tucanae revealed strikingly similar stellar populations, with the two systems basically sharing the same turn-off, sub-giant branch, and horizontal …
The CM Draconis system comprises two eclipsing mid-M dwarfs of nearly equal mass in a 1.27-day orbit. This well-studied eclipsing binary has often been used for benchmark tests of stellar models, since its components are amongst the lowest mass stars with well-measured masses and radii (~ 1% relative precision). However, as with many other low-mass stars, non-magnetic models have been unable to match the observed radii and effective temperatures for CM Dra at the 5-10% level. To date, the uncertain metallicity of the system has complicated comparison of theoretical isochrones with observations…
Using photometric and spectroscopic observations of the double-lined early-type eclipsing binary system ALS 1135, a member of the distant OB association Bochum 7, we derived the new physical and orbital parameters of its components. The masses of both components were derived with an accuracy better than 1 per cent, their radii, with an accuracy better than 3 per cent. Since the primary's mass is equal to about 25 sun masses, its radius was subsequently used to derive the age of the system which is equal to 4.3+/-0.5 Myr. The result shows that this method represents a viable alternative to isoc…
Accurate stellar parameters of stars in open clusters can help constrain models of stellar structure and evolution. Here we wish to determine the age and metallicity content of the open cluster NGC 2506. To this end we investigated three detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs; V2032, V4, and V5) for which we determined their masses and radii, as well as four red giant branch stars for which we determined their effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities. Three of the stars in the DEBs have masses close to the cluster turn-off mass, allowing for extremely precise age determination. …
Binary systems, in particular eclipsing binaries, are essential sources of our knowledge of the fundamental properties of stars. The ages of binaries, members of open clusters, are constrained by their own fundamental properties and by those of the hosting cluster. The ages of eleven open clusters are here found by constructing models for the components of twelve eclipsing binaries. The difference between the ages we found and the ages of the clusters derived from isochrone fitting is up to 40%. For the binary system V497 Cep in NGC 7160, the difference is about 100%. Binary systems whose prim…
We present an extensive set of photometry and radial velocities for the detached eclipsing binary KV 29 in the intermediate-aged open cluster M11 (NGC 6705). Spectroscopy shows that the system is double-lined and all available evidence (proper motion, photometry, and position on the CMD) indicates it is a member of the cluster. We find the period of the binary to be $4.64276\pm0.00001$ days. We find masses $3.604^{+0.002}_{-0.011}M_\odot$ and $1.837^{+0.001}_{-0.006}M_\odot$, and radii $5.392^{+0.018}_{-0.035}R_\odot$ and $1.656^{+0.007}_{-0.044}R_\odot$ for the primary and secondary stars, re…
The ages of stars have historically relied on isochrone fitting of standardised grids of models. While these stellar models have provided key constraints on observational samples of massive stars, they inherit many systematic uncertainties, mainly in the internal mixing mechanisms applied throughout the grid, fundamentally undermining the isochrone method. In this work, we utilise the M-L plane of Higgins & Vink as a method of determining stellar age, with mixing-corrected models applying a calibrated core overshooting alpha_ov and rotation rate to fit the observational data. We provide multip…
Canonical grids of stellar evolutionary sequences have been computed for the helium mass-fraction abundances $Y = 0.25$, $0.29$, and $0.33$, and for iron abundances that vary from $-2.4$ to $+0.4$ (in 0.2 dex increments) when [$α$/Fe] $= +0.4$, or for the ranges $-2.0 \le$ [Fe/H] $\le +0.6$, $-1.8 \le$ [Fe/H] $\le +0.6$ when [$α$/Fe] $= 0.0$ and $-0.4$, respectively. The grids, which consist of tracks for masses from $0.12 {{\cal M}_\odot}$ to $1.1$-$1.5 {{\cal M}_\odot}$ (depending on the metallicity) are based on up-to-date physics, including the gravitational settling of helium (but not met…
We present the first full orbital and physical analysis of HD 187669, recognized by the All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) as the eclipsing binary ASAS J195222-3233.7. We combined multi-band photometry from the ASAS and SuperWASP public archives and 0.41-m PROMPT robotic telescopes with our high-precision radial velocities from the HARPS spectrograph. Two different approaches were used for the analysis: 1) fitting to all data simultaneously with the WD code, and 2) analysing each light curve (with JKTEBOP) and RVs separately and combining the partial results at the end. This system also shows a t…
We present a self-consistent, absolute isochronal age scale for young (< 200 Myr), nearby (< 100 pc) moving groups in the solar neighbourhood based on homogeneous fitting of semi-empirical pre-main-sequence model isochrones using the tau^2 maximum-likelihood fitting statistic of Naylor & Jeffries in the M_V, V-J colour-magnitude diagram. The final adopted ages for the groups are: 149+51-19 Myr for the AB Dor moving group, 24+/-3 Myr for the β Pic moving group (BPMG), 45+11-7 Myr for the Carina association, 42+6-4 Myr for the Columba association, 11+/-3 Myr for the η Cha cluster, 45+/-4 Myr for…
We present an analysis of the detached eclipsing binaries V44 and V54 belonging to the globular cluster M55. For V54 we obtain the following absolute parameters: $M_p=0.726\pm 0.015\,M_\odot$, $R_p=1.006\pm 0.009\,R_\odot$, $L_p=1.38\pm 0.07\,L_\odot$ for the primary, and $M_s=0.555\pm 0.008\,M_\odot$, $R_s=0.528\pm 0.005\,R_\odot$, $L_s=0.16\pm0.01\,L_\odot$ for the secondary. The age and apparent distance modulus of V54 are estimated at 13.3 - 14.7 Gyr and $13.94\pm0.05$ mag, respectively. This age is substantially larger than ages we have derived from the analysis of binary systems in 47 Tu…
The TESS mission will survey ~85 % of the sky, giving us the opportunity of extracting high-precision light curves of millions of stars, including stellar cluster members. In this work, we present our project "A PSF-based Approach to TESS High quality data Of Stellar clusters" (PATHOS), aimed at searching and characterise candidate exoplanets and variable stars in stellar clusters using our innovative method for the extraction of high-precision light curves of stars located in crowded environments. Our technique of light-curve extraction involves the use of empirical Point Spread Functions (PS…
We present the first detailed analysis of the detached eclipsing binary V15 in the super-metal rich open cluster NGC 6253. We obtain the following absolute parameters: M_p=1.303+-0.006 Msun, R_p=1.71+-0.03 Rsun, L_p=2.98+-0.10 Lsun for the primary, and M_s=1.225+-0.006 Msun, R_s=1.44+-0.02 Rsun, L_s=2.13+-0.06 Lsun for the secondary. Based on Dartmouth isochrones, the age of NGC 6253 is estimated to be 3.80 - 4.25 Gyr from the mass-radius diagram and 3.9 - 4.6 Gyr from color-magnitude diagram (CMD) fitting. Both of these estimates are significantly higher than those reported so far. The derive…
Eclipsing binaries in star clusters offer more stringent tests of stellar evolution theory than field binaries because models must not only match the binary properties, but also the radiative properties of all other cluster members at a single chemical composition and a single age. Here we report new spectroscopic observations of the G type, detached eclipsing binary EPIC 219394517 in the open cluster Ruprecht 147 ([Fe/H] = +0.10), which was observed in late 2015 by the K2 mission. A joint analysis of our radial-velocity measurements and the K2 light curve shows the 6.5 day orbit to be very ne…
We present the most comprehensive analysis to date of the Upper Centaurus Lupus eclipsing binary MML 53 (2.097892 d), and for the first time, confirm the bound-nature of the third star (~9yr orbit). Our analysis uses new and archival spectra and time-series photometry. We determined the temperature of the primary star to be 4880+-100 K. The study of the close binary incorporated treatment of spots and dilution by the tertiary in the light curves, allowing for the robust measurement of the masses of the eclipsing components within 1% (M1=1.0400+-0.0067 and M2=0.8907+-0.0058 Msun), their radii w…
We present results of a CCD variability search in the field of the young open cluster NGC 6834. We discover 15 stars to be variable in light. The brightest, a multiperiodic Gamma Doradus-type variable is a foreground star. The eight fainter ones, including a Gamma Cassiopeiae-type variable, two Lambda Eridani-type variables, an ellipsoidal variable, an EB-type eclipsing binary, and three variable stars we could not classify, all have E(B-V) within proper range, thus fulfilling the necessary condition to be members. One of the three unclassified variables may be a non-member on account of its l…
We analyze extensive BVR_cI_c time-series photometry and radial-velocity measurements for WOCS 40007 (Auner 259; KIC 5113053), a double-lined detached eclipsing binary and a member of the open cluster NGC 6819. Utilizing photometric observations from the 1-meter telescope at Mount Laguna Observatory and spectra from the WIYN 3.5-meter telescope, we measure precise and accurate masses (~1.6% uncertainty) and radii (~0.5%) for the binary components. In addition, we discover a third star orbiting the binary with a period greater than 3000 days using radial velocities and Kepler eclipse timings. B…
We extend our effort to calibrate stellar isochrones in the Johnson-Cousins ($BVI_C$) and the 2MASS ($JHK_s$) filter systems based on observations of well-studied open clusters. Using cool main-sequence (MS) stars in Praesepe, we define empirical corrections to the Lejeune et al. color-effective temperature ($T_{\rm eff}$) relations down to $T_{\rm eff} \sim 3600$ K, complementing our previous work based on the Hyades and the Pleiades. We apply empirically corrected isochrones to existing optical and near-infrared photometry of cool ($T_{\rm eff} \leq 5500$ K) and metal-rich ([Fe/H]$=+0.37$) M…
We present the discovery in Kepler's $K2$ mission observations and our follow-up radial velocity observations from Keck/HIRES for four eclipsing binary (EB) star systems in the young benchmark Pleiades cluster. Based on our modeling results, we announce two new low mass ($M_{tot} < 0.6 M_\odot$) EBs among Pleiades members (HCG 76 and MHO 9) and we report on two previously known Pleiades binaries that are also found to be EB systems (HII 2407 and HD 23642). We measured the masses of the binary HCG 76 to $\lesssim$2.5% precision, and the radii to $\lesssim$4.5% precision, which together with the…
Context. The precise determinations of stellar mass at $\sim$1% provide important constraints on stellar evolution models. Accurate parallax measurements can also serve as independent benchmarks for the next Gaia data release. Aims. We aim at measuring the masses and distance of binary systems with a precision level better than 1% using a fully geometrical and empirical method. Methods. We obtained the first interferometric observations for the eclipsing systems AI Phe, AL Dor, KW Hya, NN Del, $ψ$ Cen and V4090 Sgr with the VLTI/PIONIER combiner, which we combined with radial velocity measurem…
Models of stellar structure and evolution can be constrained by measuring accurate parameters of detached eclipsing binaries in open clusters. Multiple binary stars provide the means to determine helium abundances in these old stellar systems, and in turn, to improve estimates of their age. In the first paper of this series, we demonstrated how measurements of multiple eclipsing binaries in the old open cluster NGC6791 sets tighter constraints on the properties of stellar models than has previously been possible, thereby potentially improving both the accuracy and precision of the cluster age.…
We have analyzed the double-lined eclipsing binary system ASAS J180057-2333.8 from the All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) catalogue . We measure absolute physical and orbital parameters for this system based on archival $V$-band and $I$-band ASAS photometry, as well as on high-resolution spectroscopic data obtained with ESO 3.6m/HARPS and CORALIE spectrographs. The physical and orbital parameters of the system were derived with an accuracy of about 0.5 - 3%. The system is a very rare configuration of two bright well-detached giants of spectral types K1 and K4 and luminosity class II. The radii of…
We analyze the full $\mathit{Kepler}$ phase curve of KOI-964, a binary system consisting of a hot white dwarf on an eclipsing orbit around an A-type host star. Using all 18 quarters of long-cadence photometry, we carry out a joint light curve fit and obtain improved phase curve amplitudes, occultation depths, orbital parameters, and transit ephemeris over the previous results of Carter et al. 2011. A periodogram of the residuals from the phase curve fit reveals an additional stellar variability signal from the host star with a characteristic period of $0.620276\pm0.000011$ days and a full ampl…
We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the detached eclipsing binaries V40 and V41 in the globular cluster NGC 6362 to derive masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. The orbital periods of these systems are 5.30 and 17.89 d, respectively. The measured masses of the primary and secondary components ($M_p$, $M_s$) are (0.8337$\pm$0.0063, 0.7947$\pm$0.0048) M$_\odot$ for V40 and (0.8215$\pm$0.0058, 0.7280$\pm$0.0047) M$_\odot$ for V41. The measured radii ($R_p$, $R_s$) are (1.3253$\pm$0.0075, 0.997$\pm$0.013) R$_\odot$ for V40 and (1.0739$\pm$0.0048, 0.7307$\pm$0.004…
As many as 10\% of OB-type stars have global magnetic fields, which is surprising given their internal structure is radiative near the surface. A direct probe of internal structure is pulsations, and some OB-type stars exhibit pressure modes ($β$ Cep pulsators) or gravity modes (slowly pulsating B-type stars; SPBs); a few rare cases of hybrid $β$ Cep/SPBs occupy a narrow instability strip in the H-R diagram. The most precise fundamental properties of stars are obtained from eclipsing binaries (EBs), and those in clusters with known ages and metallicities provide the most stringent constraints …
We present an analysis of a slightly eccentric ($e=0.05$), partially eclipsing long-period ($P = 69.73$ d) main sequence binary system (WOCS 12009, Sanders 1247) in the benchmark old open cluster M67. Using Kepler K2 and ground-based photometry along with a large set of new and reanalyzed spectra, we derived highly precise masses ($1.111\pm0.015$ and $0.748\pm0.005 M_\odot$) and radii ($1.071\pm0.008\pm0.003$ and $0.713\pm0.019\pm0.026 R_\odot$, with statistical and systematic error estimates) for the stars. The radius of the secondary star is in agreement with theory. The primary, however, is…
We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binaries V65, V66 and V69 in the field of the globular cluster M4 to derive masses, radii, and luminosities of their components. The orbital periods of these systems are 2.29, 8.11 and 48.19 d, respectively. The measured masses of the primary and secondary components (Mp and Ms) are 0.8035+-0.0086 and 0.6050+-0.0044 Msun for V65, 0.7842+-0.0045 and 0.7443+-0.0042 Msun for V66, and 0.7665+-0.0053 and 0.7278+-0.0048 Msun for V69. The measured radii (Rp and Rs) are 1.147+_0.010 and 0.6110+-0.0092 Rsun for V66, 0.9347+_0.0048 and 0…
Aim: Our aim is to obtain high-accuracy measurements of the physical and orbital parameters of two evolved eclipsing binary systems, and to use these measurements to study their evolutionary status. We also aim to derive distances to the systems by using a surface brightness - colour relation and compare these distances with the measurements provided by GAIA. Methods: We measured the physical and orbital parameters on both systems based on V-band and I-band photometry from OGLE, near-infrared photometry obtained with the NTT telescope and the instrument SOFI, as well as high-resolution spectra…
We present the list of variable stars we found in the Kepler superstamp data covering approximately 9 arcminutes from the central region of NGC 6791. We classified the variable stars based on the variability type and we established their cluster membership based on the available Gaia Early Data Release 3 astrometry, by means of the Bayesian Gaussian mixture models. In total we found 278 variable objects, among which 17 binaries, 45 pulsators, 62 rotational and five unclassified variables are cluster members. The remaining 28 binaries, 25 pulsators, 83 rotational, four unclassified and nine uni…
We used the newly commissioned 50 cm Binocular Network (50BiN) telescope at Qinghai Station of Purple Mountain Observatory (Chinese Academy of Sciences) to observe the old open cluster NGC 188 in V and R as part of a search for variable objects. Our time-series data span a total of 36 days. Radial velocity and proper-motion selection resulted in a sample of 532 genuine cluster members. Isochrone fitting was applied to the cleaned cluster sequence, yielding a distance modulus of (m - M)0V = 11.35 \pm 0.10 mag and a total foreground reddening of E(V - R) = 0.062 \pm 0.002 mag. Light-curve soluti…
Isochrones for ages > 4 Gyr and metallicities in the range -2.5 < [Fe/H] < +0.3 that take the diffusion of helium and recent advances in stellar physics into account are compared with observations in the Johnson-Cousins BV(RI)_C photometric system for several open and globular star clusters. The adopted color-Teff relations include those which we have derived from the latest MARCS model atmospheres and empirical transformations for dwarf and subgiant stars given by Casagrande et al (2010, A&A, 512, 54; CRMBA). Those reported by VandenBerg & Clem (2003, AJ, 126, 778) have also been considered, …
We present a self-consistent, absolute isochronal age scale for young (< 200 Myr), nearby (< 100 pc) moving groups, which is consistent with recent lithium depletion boundary ages for both the Beta Pic and Tucana-Horologium moving groups. This age scale was derived using a set of semi-empirical pre-main-sequence model isochrones that incorporate an empirical colour-Teff relation and bolometric corrections based on the observed colours of Pleiades members, with theoretical corrections for the dependence on log g. Absolute ages for young, nearby groups are vital as these regions play a crucial r…
