We use ultradeep 20 cm data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and 850 micron data from SCUBA-2 and the Submillimeter Array of an 124 arcmin^2 region of the Chandra Deep Field-north to analyze the high radio power (P_20cm>10^31 erg s^-1 Hz^-1) population. We find that 20 (42+/-9%) of the spectroscopically identified z>0.8 sources have consistent star formation rates (SFRs) inferred from both submillimeter and radio observations, while the remaining sources have lower (mostly undetected) submillimeter fluxes, suggesting that active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity dominates the radio power in these sources. We develop a classification scheme based on the ratio of submillimeter flux to radio power versus radio power and find that it agrees with AGN and star-forming galaxy classifications from Very Long Baseline Interferometry. Our results provide support for an extremely rapid drop in the number of high SFR galaxies above about a thousand solar masses per year (Kroupa initial mass function) and for the locally determined relation between X-ray luminosity and radio power for star-forming galaxies applying at high redshifts and high radio powers. We measure far-infrared (FIR) luminosities and find that some AGNs lie on the FIR-radio correlation, while others scatter below. The AGNs that lie on the correlation appear to do so based on their emission from the AGN torus. We measure a median radio size of 1.0+/-0.3 arcsecond for the star-forming galaxies. The radio sizes of the star-forming galaxies are generally larger than those of the AGNs.
In this second paper of the Hawaii SCUBA-2 Lensing Cluster Survey series, we cross-match SCUBA-2 maps with 3 and 6 GHz images from the Janksy-VLA Frontier Fields Legacy Survey for three cluster fields, MACS J0416.1--2403, MACS J0717.5+3745, and MACS J1149.5+2223. Within the HST coverage, 14 out of 44 850 $μ$m sources have 3 GHz counterparts, five of which are also detected at 6 GHz. The 850 $μ$m flux densities of these detected sources span from 0.7 to 4.4 mJy after correcting for lensing amplification. The median redshift of the sample is $z = 1.28^{+0.07}_{-0.09}$, much lower than the typica…
A two-parameter semi-empirical model is presented for the spectral energy distributions of galaxies with contributions to their infrared-submillimeter-radio emission from both star formation and accretion disk-powered activity. This model builds upon a previous one-parameter family of models for star-forming galaxies, and includes an update to the mid-infrared emission using an average template obtained from Spitzer Space Telescope observations of normal galaxies. Star-forming/AGN diagnostics based on PAH equivalent widths and broadband infrared colors are presented, and example mid-infrared A…

We present a multiwavelength study of an atypical submillimeter galaxy in the GOODS-North field, with the aim to understand its physical properties of stellar and dust emission, as well as the central AGN activity. Although it is shown that the source is likely an extremely dusty galaxy at high redshift, its exact position of submillimeter emission is unknown. With the new NOEMA interferometric imaging, we confirm that the source is a unique dusty galaxy. It has no obvious counterpart in the optical and even NIR images observed with HST at lambda~<1.4um. Photometric-redshift analyses from both…
We present results from a continuing interferometric survey of high-redshift submillimeter galaxies with the Submillimeter Array, including high-resolution (beam size ~2 arcsec) imaging of eight additional AzTEC 1.1mm selected sources in the COSMOS Field, for which we obtain six reliable (peak S/N>5 or peak S/N>4 with multiwavelength counterparts within the beam) and two moderate significance (peak S/N>4) detections. When combined with previous detections, this yields an unbiased sample of millimeter-selected SMGs with complete interferometric followup. With this sample in hand, we (1) empiric…
We study the heating mechanisms and Lyα escape fractions of 35 Lyα blobs (LABs) at z = 3.1 in the SSA22 field. Dust continuum sources have been identified in 11 of the 35 LABs, all with star formation rates (SFRs) above 100 Msun/yr. Likely radio counterparts are detected in 9 out of 29 investigated LABs. The detection of submm dust emission is more linked to the physical size of the Lyα emission than to the Lyα luminosities of the LABs. A radio excess in the submm/radio detected LABs is common, hinting at the presence of active galactic nuclei. Most radio sources without X-ray counterparts are…
We examine the robustness of the color-color selection of quiescent galaxies (QGs) against contamination of dusty star-forming galaxies using the latest submillimeter data. We selected 18,304 QG candidates out to $z\sim$ 3 using the commonly adopted $NUV-r-J$ selection based on the high-quality multi-wavelength COSMOS2015 catalog. Using extremely deep 450 and 850 $μ$m catalogs from the latest JCMT SCUBA-2 Large Programs, S2COSMOS, and STUDIES, as well as ALMA submillimeter, VLA 3 GHz, and $Spitzer$ MIPS 24 $μ$m catalogs, we identified luminous dusty star-forming galaxies among the QG candidate…
We use the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope's SCUBA-2 camera to image a 400 arcmin^2 area surrounding the GOODS-N field. The 850 micron rms noise ranges from a value of 0.49 mJy in the central region to 3.5 mJy at the outside edge. From these data, we construct an 850 micron source catalog to 2 mJy containing 49 sources detected above the 4-sigma level. We use an ultradeep (11.5 uJy at 5-sigma) 1.4 GHz image obtained with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array together with observations made with the Submillimeter Array to identify counterparts to the submillimeter galaxies. For most cases of multip…
We present the first results from an on-going survey to characterize the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of the massive high-redshift galaxies detected as submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). We constructed a parent sample of 163 SMG-QSO pairs with separations less than $\sim$36 arcsec by cross-matching far-infrared-selected galaxies from Herschel with spectroscopically confirmed QSOs. The Herschel sources were selected to match the properties of SMGs. We determined the sub-arcsecond positions of six Herschel sources with the Very Large Array and obtained secure redshift identification for three of thos…
We describe the application of the supervised machine-learning algorithms to identify the likely multi-wavelength counterparts to submillimeter sources detected in panoramic, single-dish submillimeter surveys. As a training set, we employ a sample of 695 ($S_{\rm 870μm}$ >1 mJy) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) with precise identifications from the ALMA follow-up of the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey's UKIDSS-UDS field (AS2UDS). We show that radio emission, near-/mid-infrared colors, photometric redshift, and absolute $H$-band magnitude are effective predictors that can distinguish SMGs from sub…
We identify multi-wavelength counterparts to 1,147 submillimeter sources from the S2COSMOS SCUBA-2 survey of the COSMOS field by employing a recently developed radio$+$machine-learning method trained on a large sample of ALMA-identified submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), including 260 SMGs identified in the AS2COSMOS pilot survey. In total, we identify 1,222 optical/near-infrared(NIR)/radio counterparts to the 897 S2COSMOS submillimeter sources with S$_{850}$>1.6mJy, yielding an overall identification rate of ($78\pm9$)%. We find that ($22\pm5$)% of S2COSMOS sources have multiple identified counte…
Deep Submillimeter and Radio Observations in the SSA22 Field. III. Multiwavelength Identifications and Properties of the 850 $μ$m-selected Submillimeter Galaxies
Purple Mountain Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences(中国科学院紫金山天文台);School of Astronomy and Space Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China(中国科学技术大学天文与空间科学学院)
We present a multi-wavelength analysis of 48 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) detected in the LABOCA/ACT Survey of Clusters at All Redshifts, LASCAR, which acquired new 870 $μ$m and ATCA 2.1 GHz observations of ten galaxy clusters detected through their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) signal by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. Far-infrared observations were also conducted with the PACS (100/160 $μ$m) and SPIRE (250/350/500 $μ$m) instruments on $Herschel$ for sample subsets of five and six clusters. LASCAR 870 $μ$m, maps were reduced using a multi-scale iterative pipeline that removes the SZE incr…
Herschel Space Observatory photometry and extensive multiwavelength followup have revealed that the powerful radio galaxy 3C 220.3 at z=0.685 acts as a gravitational lens for a background submillimeter galaxy (SMG) at z=2.221. At an observed wavelength of 1mm, the SMG is lensed into three distinct images. In the observed near infrared, these images are connected by an arc of 1.8" radius forming an Einstein half-ring centered near the radio galaxy. In visible light, only the arc is apparent. 3C 220.3 is the only known instance of strong galaxy-scale lensing by a powerful radio galaxy not locate…
The RAdio Galaxy Environment Reference Survey (RAGERS): Evidence of an anisotropic distribution of submillimeter galaxies in the 4C 23.56 protocluster at z=2.48
We present a study of the infrared properties for a sample of seven spectroscopically confirmed submillimeter galaxies at $z>$4.0. By combining ground-based near-infrared, Spitzer IRAC and MIPS, Herschel SPIRE, and ground-based submillimeter/millimeter photometry, we construct their Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) and a composite model to fit the SEDs. The model includes a stellar emission component at $λ_{\rm rest} <$ 3.5$ μ$m; a hot dust component peaking at $λ_{rest} \sim$ 5$\,μ$m; and cold dust component which becomes significant for $λ_{\rm rest} >$ 50$\,μ$m. Six objects in the sample…
The CDF-S is the deepest X-ray image available and will remain so for the near future. We provide a spectroscopic (64.5%; 64% with spectral classifications) and photometric redshift catalog for the full 7 Ms sample, but much of our analysis focuses on the central (off-axis angles <5.7') region, which contains a large, faint ALMA sample of 75 >4.5-sigma 850 micron sources. We measure the 850 micron fluxes at the X-ray positions using the ALMA images, where available, or an ultradeep SCUBA-2 map. We find that the full X-ray sample produces ~10% of the 850 micron extragalactic background light. W…
A giant molecular cloud has been detected surrounding the supernebula in NGC 5253, revealing details of the formation and feedback process in a very massive star cluster. "Cloud D" was recently mapped in CO J=3-2 with the Submillimeter Array. The cloud surrounds a currently forming massive cluster of mass ~10$^6$ $\rm M_\odot$ and luminosity ~10$^9$ $\rm L_\odot$. Cloud D is hot, clearly associated with the cluster, yet kinematically relatively quiescent. The dust mass is ~15,000 $\rm M_\odot$, giving a gas-to-dust ratio of ~50, nearly an order of magnitude lower than expected for this low met…
We present multiwavelength identifications for the counterparts of 1088 submillimeter sources detected at 850$μ$m in the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey study of the UKIDSS-UDS field. By utilising an ALMA pilot study on a subset of our bright SCUBA-2 sample as a training set, along with the deep optical-near-infrared data available in this field, we develop a novel technique, Optical-IR Triple Color (OIRTC), using $z-K$, $K-[3.6]$, $[3.6]-[4.5]$ colors to select the candidate submillimeter galaxy (SMG) counterparts. By combining radio identification and the OIRTC technique, we find counterpart…
The nature of galaxies selected at submillimeter wavelengths (SMGs, S_850 > 3 mJy), some of the bolometrically most luminous objects at high redshifts, is still elusive. In particular their star formation histories and source of emission are not accurately constrained. In this paper we introduce a new approach to analyse the SMG data. Namely, we present the first self-consistent UV-to-radio spectral energy distribution fits of 76 SMGs with spectroscopic redshifts using all photometric datapoints from ultraviolet to radio simultaneously. We find that they are highly star-forming (median star fo…
We present a multiwavelength investigation of star formation activity towards the southern H II regions associated with IRAS 17160-3707, located at a distance of 6.2 kpc with a bolometric luminosity of 830000 Lsun. The ionised gas distribution and dust clumps in the parental molecular cloud are examined in detail using measurements at infrared, submillimeter and radio wavelengths. The radio continuum images at 1280 and 610 MHz obtained using Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope reveal the presence of multiple compact sources as well as nebulous emission. At submillimeter wavelengths, we identify seven…
We present APEX LABOCA 870 micron observations of the field around the high-redshift radio galaxy MRC1138-262 at z=2.16. We detect 16 submillimeter galaxies in this ~140 square arcmin bolometer map with flux densities in the range 3-11 mJy. The raw number counts indicate a density of submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) that is up to four times that of blank field surveys. Based on an exquisite multiwavelength database, including VLA 1.4 GHz radio and infrared observations, we investigate whether these sources are members of the protocluster structure at z=2.2. Using Herschel PACS+SPIRE and Spitzer M…
We present deep SCUBA-2 450 micron imaging of the two GOODS fields, achieving a central rms of 1.14 mJy for the GOODS-N and 1.86 mJy for the GOODS-S. For each field, we give a catalog of >4-sigma detections (79 and 16 sources, respectively). We construct the 450 micron number counts, finding excellent agreement with others from the literature. We match the 450 micron sources to 20 cm data (both fields) and ALMA 870 micron data (GOODS-S) to gauge the accuracy of the 450 micron positions. We use the extensive redshift information available on the fields to test how well redshift can be estimated…
We report detections of two candidate distant submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), MM J154506.4$-$344318 and MM J154132.7$-$350320, which are discovered in the AzTEC/ASTE 1.1 mm survey toward the Lupus-I star-forming region. The two objects have 1.1 mm flux densities of 43.9 and 27.1 mJy, and have Herschel/SPIRE counterparts as well. The Submillimeter Array counterpart to the former SMG is identified at 890 $μ$m and 1.3 mm. Photometric redshift estimates using all available data from the mid-infrared to the radio suggest that the redshifts of the two SMGs are $z_{\rm photo} \simeq$ 4-5 and 3, respec…
Submillimeter-emitting galaxies (SMGs) are z~2 bolometrically luminous systems hosting energetic starburst and AGN activity. SMGs may represent a rapid growth phase that every massive galaxy undergoes before lying on the well-established black-hole-spheroid mass relationship in the local Universe. Here we briefly discuss our recent results from Alexander et al. (2008) where we estimated the masses of the black holes in SMGs using the black-hole virial mass estimator, finding M_BH~6x10^7 M_solar for typical SMGs. We show that the black-hole-spheroid mass ratio for SMGs at z~2 was suggestively b…
We present general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics (GRRMHD) simulations of super-Eddington accretion flows around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) which may apply to tidal disruption events (TDEs). We perform long duration ($t\geq81,200\, GM/c^3$) simulations which achieve mass accretion rates $\gtrsim 11$ times the Eddington rate and produce thermal synchrotron spectra and images of their jets. The jet reaches a maximum velocity of $v/c \approx 0.5-0.9$, but the density weighted outflow velocity is $\sim0.2-0.35c$. Gas flowing beyond the funnel wall expands conically and drives a …
We present the results from a 1.1 mm imaging survey of the SSA22 field, known for having an overdensity of z=3.1 Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs), taken with the AzTEC camera on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). We imaged a 950 arcmin$^2$ field down to a 1 sigma sensitivity of 0.7-1.3 mJy/beam to find 125 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) with a signal to noise ratio >= 3.5. Counterpart identification using radio and near/mid-infrared data was performed and one or more counterpart candidates were found for 59 SMGs. Photometric redshifts based on optical to near-infrared im…
Luminous infrared galaxies and submillimeter galaxies contribute significantly to stellar mass assembly and the frequency of GRBs in these systems provides an important test of the connection between the gamma-ray burst rate and that of overall cosmic star-formation. We present sensitive 3 GHz radio observations using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array of 32 uniformly-selected GRB host galaxies spanning a redshift range from 0 < z < 2.5, providing the first fully dust- and sample-unbiased measurement of the fraction of GRBs originating from the Universe's most bolometrically luminous galaxies…
We present results from Submillimeter Array (SMA) 860-micron sub-arcsec astrometry and multiwavelength observations of the brightest millimeter (S_1.1mm = 8.4 mJy) source, SSA22-AzTEC1, found near the core of the SSA22 protocluster that is traced by Lyαemitting galaxies at z = 3.09. We identify a 860-micron counterpart with a flux density of S_860um = 12.2 +/- 2.3 mJy and absolute positional accuracy that is better than 0.3". At the SMA position, we find radio to mid-infrared counterparts, whilst no object is found in Subaru optical and near-infrared deep images at wavelengths \le 1 micron (J …
We used the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) to study the mid-IR properties and investigate the energetics of 24 Submillimeter Galaxies (SMGs). This is the largest sample of SMGs observed with Spitzer IRS and covers the full extent of properties of the radio-identified population of SMGs in the redshift range of z ~ 0.65-3.2. We observe broad emission features from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in more than 80% of our sample. We find that the median mid-IR spectrum is well described by a starburst component with an additional power law, Fnu ~ nu^-2, likely representing a < 32% AGN…
