Results for the antinucleon-nucleon ($\bar NN$) interaction obtained at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory (EFT) are reported. A new local regularization scheme is used for the pion-exchange contributions that has been recently suggested and applied in a pertinent study of the $NN$ force within chiral EFT. Furthermore, an alternative strategy for estimating the uncertainty is utilized that no longer depends on a variation of the cutoffs. The low-energy constants associated with the arising contact terms are fixed by a fit to the phase shifts and inelasticities provided by a phase-shift analysis of $\bar pp$ scattering data. An excellent description of the $\bar NN$ amplitudes is achieved at the highest order considered. Moreover, because of the quantitative reproduction of partial waves up to $J=3$, there is also a nice agreement on the level of $\bar pp$ observables. Specifically, total and integrated elastic and charge-exchange cross sections agree well with the results from the partial-wave analysis up to laboratory energies of $300$ MeV, while differential cross sections and analyzing powers are described quantitatively up to $200$-$250$ MeV. The low-energy structure of the $\bar NN$ amplitudes is also considered and compared to data from antiprotonic hydrogen.
Results of an exploratory study of the antinucleon-nucleon interaction within chiral effective field theory are reported. The antinucleon-nucleon potential is derived up to next-to-next-to-leading order, based on a modified Weinberg power counting, in close analogy to pertinent studies of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The low-energy constants associated with the arising contact interactions are fixed by a fit to phase shifts and inelasticities provided by a recently published phase-shift analysis of antiproton-proton scattering data. The overall quality of the achieved description of the an…
A review is presented of the antinucleon-nucleon interaction, and some related issues such as fundamental symmetries, annihilation mechanisms, antinucleon-nucleus scattering, antiprotonic atoms and neutron-antineutron oscillations. The overall perspective is historical but the modern approaches are also presented.
We report on an updated Paris nucleon-antinucleon optical potential. The long- and intermediate-range real parts are obtained by G-parity transformation of the Paris nucleon-nucleon potential based on a theoretical dispersion-relation treatment of the correlated and uncorrelated two-pion exchange. The short-range imaginary potential parametrization results from the calculation of the nucleon-antinucleon annihilation box diagram into two mesons with a nucleon-antinucleon intermediate state in the crossed channel. The parametrized real and imaginary short range parts are determined by fitting no…
Spin and pseudospin symmetries in the spectra of nucleons and antinucleons are studied in a relativistic mean-field theory with scalar and vector Woods-Saxon potentials, in which the strength of the latter is allowed to change. We observe that, for nucleons and antinucleons, the spin symmetry is of perturbative nature and it is almost an exact symmetry in the physical region for antinucleons. The opposite situation is found in the pseudospin symmetry case, which is better realized for nucleons than for antinucleons, but is of dynamical nature and cannot be viewed in a perturbative way both for…
Nucleon-antinucleon annihilation in the large $N_c$ limit of QCD in the Witten regime of fixed velocity is considered with a focus on the spin and isospin dependence of the annihilation cross-section. In general, time-reversal and isospin invariance restricts the annihilation cross-section to depend on 6 independent energy-dependent terms. At large $N_c$, a spin-flavor symmetry emerges in the theory that acts to further restrict the dependence of the annihilation cross-section to three of these terms; the other terms amount to $1/N_c$ corrections. Assuming dominance of the leading order terms,…
The renormalization of iterated one-pion exchange (OPE) is studied in Chiral Effective Field Theory ($χ$EFT) for the antinucleon-nucleon ($\overline{N}\!N$) system. The OPE potential is cut off at a certain distance and contact interactions are represented by a complex spherical well with the same radius. We investigate the dependence on the cutoff radius of the phase shifts, inelasticities, and mixing angles for the low partial waves in $\overline{N}\!N$ scattering. We show that renormalization requires additional contact interactions compared to the expectation based on naive dimensional ana…
We model the $N\bar{N}$ system at rest as a baryon number zero lump in the Skyrme model including the $ω$ field. We integrate the classical equations of motion from the highly non-perturbative annihilation region into the non-interacting radiation zone. Subsequent coherent state quantization of the radiation field gives a good description of the pion spectrum from annihilation at rest.
We study the production of $Z^\pm(4430)$ at a nucleon-antinucleon scattering experiment. Considering the PANDA experiment to be an ideal platform to explore the production of the charmonium and charmonim-like states, we suggest the forthcoming PANDA experiment to pay attention to the production of $Z^\pm(4430)$.
The status of our present knowledge on the antinucleon-nucleon interaction at low and medium energies is discussed. Special emphasis is put on aspects related to its spin dependence which are relevant for experiments planned by the PAX collaboration. Predictions for the spin-dependent antiproton-proton cross sections sigma_1 and sigma_2 are presented, utilizing antinucleon-nucleon potential models developed by the Juelich group, and compared to results based on the amplitudes of the Nijmegen partial-wave analysis.
We study the effect of isospin projections on a two source picture of coherent pions coming from nucleon-antinucleon annihilation. We show that important Hanbury-Brown Twiss correlations among like charge pion pairs compared with unlike arise from these isospin projections.
We calculate the static nucleon-antinucleon interaction potential from the modified Skyrme model with additional $B^μB_μ$ term using the product ansatz. The static properties of single baryon are improved in the modified Skyrme model. State mixing is taken into account by perturbation theory, which substantially increases the strength of the central attraction. We obtain a long and mid range potential which is in qualitative agreement with some phenomenological potentials.
We calculate the full static interaction of a Skyrmion and an anti-Skyrmion as a function of separation and relative grooming. From this, using projection methods and Born-Oppenheimer mixing, we obtain the nucleon antinucleon interaction. We find agreement with the major features of the empirical interaction including the strong central attraction and the sharp onset of annihilation at about 1 fm.
We investigate phase transitions for the Walecka model at very high temperatures. As is well known, depending on the parametrization of this model and for the particular case of a zero chemical potential ($ μ$), a first order phase transition is possible \cite{theis}. We investigate this model for the case in which $ μ\ne 0 $. It turns out that, in this situation, phases with different values of antinucleon-nucleon ratios and net baryon densities may coexist. We present the temperature versus antinucleon-nucleon ratio as well as the temperature versus the net baryon density for the coexistence…
A unified picture of nucleon antinucleon annihilation into pions emerges from a classical description of the pion wave produced in annihilation and the subsequent quantization of that wave as a coherent state. When the constraints of energy-momentum and iso-spin conservation are imposed on the coherent state, the pion number distribution and charge ratios are found to be in excellent agreement with experiment.
The general properties of antiproton-proton annihilation at rest are presented, with special focus on the two-meson final states. The data exhibit remarkable dynamical selection rules : some allowed annihilation modes are suppressed by one order of magnitude with respect to modes of comparable phase-space. Various phenomenological analyses are reviewed, based on microscopic quark dynamics or symmetry considerations. The role of initial- and final-state interaction is also examined.
We calculate the nucleon-antinucleon static potential in the Skyrme model using the product ansatz and including some finite $N_C$ (number of colors) corrections. The mid and long range part of the spin-spin and tensor force are correctly given in both iso-spin channels while the central interaction has insufficient mid-range attraction. This is a well known problem of the product ansatz that should be repaired with better Skyrme dynamics.
Partial decay widths of various decay channels of the X(1835) are evaluated in the 3P0 quark model, assuming that the X(1835) is a nucleon-antinucleon bound state. It is found that the decays to rho+rho, omega+omega and pion+a0(1450) dominate over other channels, and that the product branching fractions of J/psi to pion+pion+eta and J/psi to pion+pion+eta' are in the same order. We suggest that the X(1835) may be searched in the pion+a0(1450) channel.
This report is a historical review of the salient results in low energy antiproton-proton and antineutron-proton annihilation obtained at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR), which was operated at CERN between 1983 and 1996. The intention is to provide guidelines for future experiments at the CERN AD/ELENA complex and elsewhere. In the spirit of this workshop, hadron spectroscopy - one of the cornerstones at LEAR - is briefly mentioned, while emphasis is put on the annihilation mechanism on one and two nucleons, the final state multiplicity distributions and the contributions from quarks, in…
The renormalization of iterated one-pion exchange (OPE) has been studied in Chiral Effective Field Theory ($χ$EFT) for the antinucleon-nucleon ($\overline{N}\!N$) scattering in some partial waves (Phys. Rev. C 105, 054005 (2022)). We go further for the other higher partial waves but with total angular momenta $J\leq 3$ in this paper. Contact interactions are represented by a complex spherical well in coordinate space. Changing the radius of the spherical well means changing the cutoff. We check the cutoff dependence of the phase shifts, inelasticities, and mixing angles for the partial waves, …
The relativistic Hartree approximation predicts a deep attractive potential for antinucleon, which largely reduce the threshold energies of the nucleon-antinucleon (N-Nbar) production. This effect has played an important role to explain the quenching of the Gamow-Teller (GT) strength because the quenched strength in the particle-hole excitation is partially taken by the nucleon-antinucleon production. On the other hand antiproton experiments do not reveal deep attractive potential for antinucleon. In this paper we study energy-dependence of the nucleon self-energies in the relativistic Hartree…
We use classical/large Nc (number of colors) QCD to study nucleon--antinucleon annihilation at rest. We include pion, rho and omega fields in the classical dynamics, starting from the nonlinear sigma model. We begin with a spherical blob of pionic matter with zero baryon number and energy of twice the nucleon mass. This evolves according to the classical dynamics to pion and vector meson fields into the radiation zone. The radiation fields are quantized using the method of coherent states modified to include isospin and four momentum conservation. Empirical information is extracted from that c…
We review the physics of low-energy antiprotons, and its link with the nuclear forces. This includes: antinucleon scattering on nucleons and nuclei, antiprotonic atoms and antinucleon-nucleon annihilation into mesons.
Here a short synthesis is presented of the work, developed in the last two years by the Brescia Collaboration, on the phenomenology of antinucleon-nucleon and antinucleon-nucleus annihilation at small momenta (below 300 MeV/c in the laboratory), with special stress on the role of general principles.
Roles of antinucleon degrees of freedom in the relativistic random phase approximation(RPA) are investigated. The energy-weighted sum of the RPA transition strengths is expressed in terms of the double commutator between the excitation operator and the Hamiltonian, as in nonrelativistic models. The commutator, however, should not be calculated with a usual way in the local field theory, because, otherwise, the sum vanishes. The sum value obtained correctly from the commutator is infinite, owing to the Dirac sea. Most of the previous calculations takes into account only a part of the nucleon-an…
Quantum Hadrodynamics in mean field approximation describes the effective nucleon-nucleus potential (about -50 MeV deep) as resulting from a strong repulsive vector (about 400 MeV) and a strong attractive scalar (about -450 MeV) contribution. This scalar-vector Lorentz structure implies a significant lowering of the threshold for $p\bar{p}$ photoproduction on a nucleus by about 850 MeV as compared to the free case since charge conjugation reverses the sign of the vector potential contribution in the equation of motion for the $\bar{p}$ states. It also implies a certain size of the photon induc…

The existence of nucleon-antinucleon quasi-bound state is indicated in two decay modes of the J/psi meson studied by BES. We discuss an explanation in a fairly traditional Paris-potential model of the nucleon-antinucleon interactions. A broad, S-wave and a narrow P-wave quasi-bound states are predicted by this model. Some existing experimental evidence and possible verifications in the future are indicated.
A general algorithm for handling the energy dependence of hadron-nucleon amplitudes in the nuclear medium, consistently with their density dependence, has been recently applied to antikaons, eta mesons and pions interacting with nuclei. Here we apply this approach to antiprotons below threshold, analyzing experimental results for antiprotonic atoms across the periodic table. It is also applied to antiproton and antineutron interaction with nuclei up to 400 MeV/c, comparing with elastic scattering and annihilation cross sections. The underlying $\bar pN$ scattering amplitudes are derived from t…
The recently developed Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) - Jet model is used as an effective chiral quark theory to calculate the quark fragmentation functions to pions, kaons, nucleons, and antinucleons. The effects of the vector mesons rho, K* and phi on the production of secondary pions and kaons are included. The fragmentation processes to nucleons and antinucleons are described by using the quark-diquark picture, which has been shown to give a reasonable description of quark distribution functions. We incorporate effects of next-to-leading order (NLO) in the Q^2 evolution, and compare our results …
In this work we study the antinucleon-nucleus optical potential in the framework of the non-linear derivative (NLD) model with momentum dependent mean-fields. We apply the NLD model to interaction of antinucleons ($\bar{\text{N}}$) in nuclear matter and, in particular, to antiproton scattering on nuclei. In nuclear matter a strong suppression of the $\bar{\text{N}}$-optical potential at rest and at high kinetic energies is found and caused by the momentum dependence of relativistic mean-fields. The NLD results are consistent with known empirical $\bar{\text{N}}$-nucleus observations and agree …
The key question in the interaction of antinucleons in the nuclear medium concerns the deepness of the antinucleon-nucleus optical potential. In this work we study this task in the framework of the non-linear derivative (NLD) model which describes consistently bulk properties of nuclear matter and Dirac phenomenology of nucleon-nucleus interactions. We apply the NLD model to antinucleon interactions in nuclear matter and find a strong decrease of the vector and scalar self-energies in energy and density and thus a strong suppression of the optical potential at zero momentum and, in particular,…
The various aspects of antiproton physics are shortly reviewed, and its relevance for the possible discovery of new particles and effects is pointed out. Then a survey of the nucleon-antinucleon interactions is given. In the nucleon-antinucleon annihilations, there is a big amount of experimental data that call for theoretical explanation. Importance of specific spin and isospin channels for our understanding of antiproton physics is stressed.
We investigate the collision energy dependence of deuteron and antideuteron emission in the RHIC-BES low- to mid-energy range $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 4.6-200$ GeV where the formation rate of antinuclei compared to nuclei is strongly suppressed. In the coalescence picture, this can be understood as bulk emission for nuclei in contrast to surface emission for antinuclei. By comparison with experimental data on the coalescence parameter $B_2$, we are able to extract the respective source geometries. This interpretation is further supported by results from the UrQMD transport model, and establishes the f…
We emphasize that the composite structure of the nucleon may play quite an important role in nuclear physics. It is shown that the momentum-dependent repulsive force of second order in the scalar field, which plays an important role in Dirac phenomenology, can be found in the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, and that the properties of nuclear matter are well described through the quark-scalar density in a nucleon and a self-consistency condition for the scalar field. The difference between theories of point-like nucleons and composite ones may be seen in the change of the $ω$-meson mass in nu…
The particle-hole and Delta -hole excitations are well-known elementary excitation modes for the pion propagator in nuclear matter. But, the excitation also involves antiparticles, namely, nucleon-antinucleon, anti-Delta-nucleon and Delta-antinucleon excitations. These are important for high-energy momentum as well, and have not been studied before, to our knowledge. In this paper, we give both the formulas and the numerical calculations for the real and the imaginary parts of these excitations.
We study (anti)deuteron formation rates in heavy-ion collisions in the framework of a wave-function based coalescence model. The main feature of our model is that nucleons are emitted from the whole spherically symmetric fireball volume, while antinucleons are emitted only from a spherical shell close to the surface. In this way, the model accounts for nucleon-antinucleon annihilations in the center of the reaction at lower beam energies. Comparison with experimental data on the coalescence parameter in the range $\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 4.7-200$ GeV allows us to extract radii of the respective source …
We predict that initially produced chi_cJ mesons at low transverse momentum in the central rapidity region are almost dissociated by nucleons and antinucleons in hadronic matter produced in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies sqrt {s_{NN}}= 130 and 200 GeV. In calculations the nucleon and antinucleon distributions in hadronic matter are results of evolution from their freeze-out distributions which well fit the experimental p_T spectra of proton and antiproton. Any measured chi_cJ mesons at low p_T are generated from deconfined matter and give an explicit proof of regeneration mechanism …
We discuss the possibility of producing a new kind of nuclear system by putting a few antibaryons inside ordinary nuclei. The structure of such systems is calculated within the relativistic mean--field model assuming that the nucleon and antinucleon potentials are related by the G-parity transformation. The presence of antinucleons leads to decreasing vector potential and increasing scalar potential for the nucleons. As a result, a strongly bound system of high density is formed. Due to the significant reduction of the available phase space the annihilation probability might be strongly suppre…
A model for the nucleon-antinucleon interaction is presented which is based on meson-baryon dynamics. The elastic part is the $G$-parity transform of the Bonn $NN$ potential. Annihilation into two mesons is described in terms of microscopic baryon-exchange processes including all possible combinations of $π,η,ρ,ω,a_0,f_0,a_1,f_1,a_2,f_2,K,K^*$. The remaining annihilation part is taken into account by a phenomenological energy- and state independent optical potential of Gaussian form. The model enables a simultaneous description of nucleon-antinucleon scattering and annihilation phenomena with …
We use the Paris nucleon-antinucleon optical potential for explanation of experimental data in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar p$ near threshold. It turns out that final-state interaction due to Paris optical potential allows us to reproduce available experimental data. It follows from our consideration that the isoscalar form factor is much larger than the isovector one.
In this work, a study of possible molecular states from the $Λ_c\barΛ_c$ interaction and their productions in nucleon-antinucleon collision is performed in a quasipotential Bethe-Salpeter equation approach. Two bound states with quantum numbers $J^{PC}=0^{-+}$ and $1^{--}$ are produced with almost the same binding energy from the $Λ_c\barΛ_c$ interaction which is described by the light meson exchanges. However, the result does not support the assignment of experimentally observed $Y(4630)$ as a $Λ_c\barΛ_c$ molecular state because it is hard to obtain a peak near experimental mass of the $Y(46…
From recent charge exchange measurements in the extreme forward direction, an independent and precise determination of the pion nucleon coupling constant is possible. This determination has reopened the debate on the value of this fundamental coupling constant of nuclear physics. Precise measurements of charge exchange observables at forward angles below 900 MeV/c would also give a better understanding of the long range part of the two-pion exchange potential. For example, the confirmation of the coherence of the tensor forces from the pion exchange and the isovector two-pion exchange would be…
We present a new chiral expansion scheme for the nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude which preserves unitarity exactly. Our effective field theory builds on the power counting rules for 2-nucleon reducible diagrams proposed in \cite{lutz}. We evaluate the leading order terms of the isospin one scattering amplitude and elaborate in detail on the $^1S_0$ phase shift. Our chiral description of the $^1S_0$-phase shift does compete in quality with modern phenomenological nucleon-nucleon potentials. We describe elastic and inelastic scattering quantitatively up to laboratory energies of $E_{\rm lab…
Using baryon chiral perturbation theory including vector mesons, we analyse various continuum contributions to the isoscalar electromagnetic spectral functions of the nucleon induced by the leading order couplings.
We derive the short-range contributions and the leading relativistic corrections to the three-nucleon force at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion.
The leading divergences of the generating functional for Green functions of quark currents between one--nucleon states are calculated with heat kernel techniques. The results allow for a chiral invariant renormalization of all two--nucleon Green functions of the pion--nucleon system to $O(p^3)$ in the low--energy expansion.
These lectures give an introduction to baryon chiral perturbation theory. I show in detail how to construct the chiral effective pion-nucleon Lagrangian in the one loop approximation. Particular emphasis is put on the physics related to electromagnetic probes, as manifest in pion photo- and electroproduction, Compton scattering off nucleons and the electroweak form factors of the nucleon. Other topics discussed in some detail are the meaning of low-energy theorems, pion-nucleon scattering, the reaction $πN \to ππN$ and isospin violation in the pion-nucleon system. The chiral predictions are co…
Chiral perturbation theory has to be substantially modified for the problem of nuclear forces. Loop effects dominate over tree level effects. The dominant behaviours in the scalar isoscalar channel and multi-nucleon forces are obtained in the chiral limit and for a small explicit breaking.
Compton scattering offers in principle an intriguing new window on nucleon structure. Existing experiments and future programs are discussed and the state of theoretical understanding of such measurements is explored.
In this work, we perform a systematic study of possible molecular states composed of two charmed baryons including hidden-charm systems $Λ_c\barΛ_c$, $Σ_c^{(*)}\barΣ_c^{(*)}$, and $Λ_c\barΣ_c^{(*)}$, and corresponding double-charm systems $Λ_cΛ_c$, $Σ_c^{(*)}Σ_c^{(*)}$, and $Λ_cΣ_c^{(*)}$. With the help of the heavy quark chiral effective Lagrangians, the interactions are described with $π$, $ρ$, $η$, $ω$, $ϕ$, and $σ$ exchanges. The potential kernels are constructed, and inserted into the quasipotential Bethe-Salpeter equation. The bound states from the interactions considered is studied by s…
Chiral symmetry is consistently implemented in the two-nucleon problem at low-energy through the general effective chiral lagrangian. The potential is obtained up to a certain order in chiral perturbation theory both in momentum and coordinate space. Results of a fit to scattering phase shifts and bound state data are presented, where satisfactory agreement is found for laboratory energies up to about 100 Mev.
We extend our previous analysis of the unitarized pion-nucleon scattering amplitude including up to fourth order terms in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory. We pay special attention to the stability of the generated Delta(1232 resonance, the convergence problems and the power counting of the chiral parameters.
We derive the sub-subleading two-pion exchange contributions to the three-nucleon force which appear at next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. In order to determine the low-energy constants, a complete analysis of pion-nucleon scattering at the subleading-loop order in the heavy-baryon expansion is carried out utilizing the power counting scheme employed in the derivation of the nuclear forces. We discuss the convergence of the chiral expansion for this particular three-nucleon force topology and give the values of the low-energy constants which provide…
A dynamical investigation of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction by using the resonating group method (RGM) in a chiral SU(3) quark model has been revisited. The considered quark-quark interaction includes, besides the one-gluon exchange (OGE) and the phenomenological confinement potential, the nonet scalar and pseudoscalar meson exchanges derived from the spontaneous SU(3) chiral symmetry breaking. The physical consistency requirement that the wave functions of single baryons satisfy the minimums of the Hamiltonian has been strictly imposed in determination of the model parameters. The calcu…
