The structure of steady axisymmetric force-free magnetosphere of a Kerr black hole (BH) is governed by a second-order partial differential equation of $A_ϕ$ depending on two "free" functions $Ω(A_ϕ)$ and $I(A_ϕ)$, where $A_ϕ$ is the $ϕ$ component of the vector potential of the electromagnetic field, $Ω$ is the angular velocity of the magnetic field lines and $I$ is the poloidal electric current. In this paper, we investigate the solution uniqueness. Taking asymptotically uniform field as an example, analytic studies imply that there are infinitely many solutions approaching uniform field at infinity, while only a unique one is found in general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations. To settle down the disagreement, we reinvestigate the structure of the governing equation and numerically solve it with given constraint condition and boundary condition. We find that the constraint condition (field lines smoothly crossing the light surface (LS)) and boundary conditions at horizon and at infinity are connected via radiation conditions at horizon and at infinity, rather than being independent. With appropriate constraint condition and boundary condition, we numerically solve the governing equation and find a unique solution. Contrary to naive expectation, our numerical solution yields a discontinuity in the angular velocity of the field lines and a current sheet along the last field line crossing the event horizon. We also briefly discuss the applicability of the perturbation approach to solving the governing equation.

Testing the Kerr-nature of stellar-mass black hole candidates by combining the continuum-fitting method and the power estimate of transient ballistic jets
We reinvestigate the structure of a steady axisymmetic force-free magnetosphere around a Kerr black hole (BH). The BH magnetosphere structure is governed by a second-order differential equation of $A_ϕ$ depending on two `free' functions $Ω$ and $I$, where $A_ϕ$ is the $ϕ$ component of the vector potential of the electromagnetic field, $Ω$ is the angular velocity of the magnetic field lines and $I$ is the poloidal electric current. While the two functions $Ω$ and $I$ are not arbitrarily given, which need to be self-consistently determined along with the differential equation. Based on the pertu…
In the framework of a model based on the gravitational field of the Kerr black hole, we turn to investigate the kinematic behavior of extragalactic jets. We analytically calculate the observable velocities and accelerations along any geodesic. Then, by numerical calculations, we apply our results to a geodesic, typical of the M87 jet, and probe our results by confrontation to recent observations. A transition from non-relativistic to ultrarelativistic speeds at subparsec scale is highlighted. This transition comes sooner and more abruptly than in models based on magnetic paradigm, which indica…
High resolution radio imaging of AGN have revealed that some sources present motion of superluminal knots and transverse stratification of their jet. Recent observational projects have provided new observational constraints on the central region of rotating black holes in AGN, suggesting that there is an inner- or spine-jet surrounded by a disk wind. This relativistic spine-jet is likely to be composed of electron - positron pairs extracting energy from the black hole. In this article we present an extension and generalization to relativistic jets in Kerr metric of the meridional self similar …
Attempt to find a correlation between the spin of stellar-mass black hole candidates and the power of steady jets: relaxing the Kerr black hole hypothesis
Ringed accretion disks (RADs) are agglomerations of perfect-fluid tori orbiting around a single central attractor that could arise during complex matter inflows in active galactic nuclei. We focus our analysis to axi-symmetric accretion tori orbiting in the equatorial plane of a supermassive Kerr black hole; equilibrium configurations, possible instabilities, and evolutionary sequences of RADs were discussed in our previous works. In the present work we discuss special instabilities related to open equipotential surfaces governing the material funnels emerging at various regions of the RADs, b…
Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism describes a process extracting rotation energy from a spinning black hole (BH) via magnetic field lines penetrating the event horizon of central BH. In this paper, we present a perturbation approach to study force-free jets launched by the BZ mechanism, and its two immediate applications: (1) we present a high-order split monopole perturbation solution to the BZ mechanism, which accurately pins down the energy extraction rate $\dot E$ and well describes the structure of BH magnetosphere for all range of BH spins ($0\leq a\leq 1$); (2) the approach yields an exac…
Current research indicates that the radiation of the first stars alone would not have been suficient to ionize the intergalactic medium on long distances because of the high columnar density of the clouds in which they formed. It becomes necessary, then, to explore other alternatives for the reionization. The study of the contribution of the first accreting binary systems to the reionization and heating of the intergalactic medium requires the formulation of a concrete model for the first microquasars. We aim at constructing a consistent model for jets of microquasars where the donor star is o…
We analyse flows around a rotating black hole and obtain self-consistent accretion-ejection solutions in full general relativistic prescription. Entire energy-angular momentum parameter space is investigated in the advective regime to obtain shocked and shock-free accretion solutions. Jet equations of motion are solved along the von-Zeipel surfaces computed from the post-shock disc, simultaneously with the equations of accretion disc along the equatorial plane. For a given spin parameter, the mass outflow rate increases as the shock moves closer to the black hole, but eventually decreases, max…
Binary systems of Population III can evolve to microquasars when one of the stars collapses into a black hole. When the compact object accretes matter at a rate greater than the Eddington rate, powerful jets and winds driven by strong radiation pressure should form. We investigate the structure of the jet-wind system for a model of Population III microquasar on scales beyond the jet-wind formation region. Using relativistic hydrodynamic simulations we find that the ratio of kinetic power between the jet and the disk wind determines the configuration of the system. When the power is dominated b…
Microquasars (MQs) are binary systems composed by a star feeding mass to a compact object through an accretion disk. The compact object, usually a black hole, launches oppositely directed jets which are typically observed in our galaxy through their broadband electromagnetic emission. These jets are considered potential galactic neutrino sources. MQs can also have been formed by the first generations of stars in the universe, i.e., Population III (Pop III) stars, which are considered essential contributors to the ionization processes that took place during the period of 'cosmic reionization'. …
We study the acceleration of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at FR-II radio galaxies by performing Monte Carlo simulations for the transport, scattering, and energy change of the CR particles injected into the time-evolving jet flows that are realized through relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) simulations. Toward that end, we adopt physically motivated models for the magnetic field and particle scattering. By identifying the primary acceleration process among diffusive shock acceleration (DSA), turbulent shear acceleration (TSA), and relativistic shear acceleration (RSA), we find that CRs …
Extragalactic radio sources appear under different morphologies, the most frequent ones are classified as Fanaroff-Riley type I (FR I), typically with lower luminosities, and Fanaroff-Riley type II, (FR II), typically more luminous. This simple classification, however, has many exceptions that we intend to investigate. Following previous analyses in the three-dimensional Hydrodynamic and Magneto-Hydrodynamic limits, we extend the numerical investigation to the Relativistic Magneto-Hydrodynamic regime, to include sources whose jet kinetic power sets in the range that separates FR Is from FR IIs…
We present results from two suites of simulations of powerful radio galaxies in poor cluster environments, with a focus on the formation and evolution of the radio lobes. One suite of models uses relativistic hydrodynamics and the other relativistic magnetohydrodynamics; both are set up to cover a range of jet powers and velocities. The dynamics of the lobes are shown to be in good agreement with analytical models and with previous numerical models, confirming in the relativistic regime that the observed widths of radio lobes may be explained if they are driven by very light jets. The ratio of…
The existence of the ergoregion of the Kerr space-time has not been confirmed observationally yet. We show that the confirmation would be possible by observing the quasinormal mode in gravitational waves. As an example, using the recent population synthesis results of Pop III binary black holes, we find that the peak of the final merger mass ($M_f$) is about $50~\rm M_{\odot}$, while the fraction of the final spin $q_f = a_f/M_f > 0.7$ needed for the confirmation of a part of ergoregion is $\sim 77\%$. To confirm the frequency of the quasinormal mode, ${\rm SNR} > 35$ is needed. The standard m…

It was suggested that the large scale magnetic field can be dragged inwards efficiently by the corona above the disc, i.e., the so called "coronal mechanism" (Beckwith, Hawley, \& Krolik 2009), which provides a way to solve the difficulty of field advection in a geometrically thin accretion disc. In this case, the magnetic pressure should be lower than the gas pressure in the corona. We estimate the maximal power of the jets accelerated by the magnetic field advected by the corona. The Blandford-Payne (BP) jet power is found always to be higher than the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) jet power, except …
We present here the general expressions for the acceleration of massive test particles along the symmetry axis of the Kerr metric, and then study the main properties of this acceleration in different regions of the spacetime. In particular, we show that there exists a region near the black hole in which the gravitational field is repulsive. We provide possible physical interpretations about the role of this effect in terms of the different conserved parameters. The studies of these geodesics are important not only to understand better the structure of the Kerr spacetime but also to its use as …
Gravitational-wave observations of binary black holes provide a suitable arena to test the fundamental nature of gravity in the strong-field regime. Using the data of the inspiral of 29 events detected by the LIGO-Virgo observatories, we perform a theory-agnostic test of the Kerr hypothesis. We compute the leading-order deviation to the gravitational waves emitted in the frequency domain and provide constraints on two deformation parameters ($δ_1$ and $δ_2$) belonging to a general class of axisymmetric non-Kerr black hole spacetimes proposed by Konoplya, Rezzolla & Zhidenko. Our study shows th…
Structure and Magnetic Fields in the Precessing Jet System SS433 III. Evolution of the Intrinsic Brightness of the Jets from a Deep Multi-Epoch VLA Campaign
According to the Blandford-Znajek mechanism, black hole jets are powered by the rotational energy of the compact object. In this work, we consider the possibility that the metric around black holes may not be described by the Kerr solution and we study how this changes the Blandford-Znajek model. If the Blandford-Znajek mechanism is responsible for the formation of jets, the estimate of the jet power in combination with another measurement can test the nature of black hole candidates and constrain possible deviations from the Kerr solution. However, this approach might become competitive with …
Despite their potential importance for understanding astrophysical jets, physically realistic exact solutions for magnetospheres around Kerr black holes have not been found, even in the force-free approximation. Instead approximate analytical solutions such as the Blandford-Znajek (split-)monopole, as well as numerical solutions, have been constructed. In this paper we consider a new approach to the analysis and construction of such magnetospheres. We consider force-free electrodynamics close to the rotation axis of a magnetosphere surrounding a Kerr black hole assuming axisymmetry. This is th…
The class of Double-Double Radio Galaxies (DDRGs) relates to episodic jet outbursts. How various regions and components add to the total intensity in radio images is less well known. In this paper we synthesize synchrotron images for DDRGs based on special relativistic hydrodynamic simulations, making advanced approximations for the magnetic fields. We study the synchrotron images for: Three different radial jet profiles; Ordered, entangled or mixed magnetic fields; Spectral ageing from synchrotron cooling; The contribution from different jet components; The viewing angle and Doppler (de-)boos…
We propose a new approach to find magnetically-dominated force-free magnetospheres around highly spinning black holes, relevant for models of astrophysical jets. Employing the near-horizon extreme Kerr (NHEK) limit of the Kerr black hole, any stationary, axisymmetric and regular force-free magnetosphere reduces to the same attractor solution in the NHEK limit with null electromagnetic field strength. We use this attractor solution as the universal starting point for perturbing away from the NHEK region in the extreme Kerr spacetime. We demonstrate that by going to second order in perturbation …
Scalar-Tensor-Vector Gravity (STVG) is a theory that does not require dark components to describe astrophysical data. We aim at constraining the free parameters of STVG based on recent observations of the jet in M87. We derive the equations of motion for particles in STVG-Kerr spacetime, we develop a numerical code that integrates such equations, and apply it to the jet of M87. We find that STVG deviates from GR and we set new upper limits for the free parameters of the former. We conclude that STVG is not contradicted by the observational data of M87, and may help to explain jet formation.
We present analytic force-free solutions modeling rotating stars and black holes immersed in the magnetic field of a thin disk that terminates at an inner radius. The solutions are exact in flat spacetime and approximate in Kerr spacetime. The compact object produces a conical jet whose properties carry information about its nature. For example, the jet from a star is surrounded by a current sheet, while that of a black hole is smooth. We compute an effective resistance in each case and compare to the canonical values used in circuit models of energy extraction. These solutions illustrate all …
We investigate the dependence of the GRB jet structure and its evolution on the properties of the accreting torus in the central engine. Our models numerically evolve the accretion disk around a Kerr black hole using 3D general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations. We use two different analytical hydrodynamical models of the accretion disk, based on the Fishbone-Moncrief and Chakrabarti solutions, as our initial states for the structure of the collapsar disk and the remnant after a binary neutron star merger, respectively. We impose poloidal magnetic fields of two different geometries …
We present RadioAstron Space VLBI imaging observations of the BL Lac object S5 0716+71 made on January 3-4 2015 at a frequency of 22 GHz (wavelength $λ=1.3$ cm). The observations were made in the framework of the AGN Polarization Key Science Program. The source was detected on projected space-ground baselines up to 70 833 km (5.6 Earth diameters) for both, parallel hand and cross-hand interferometric visibilities. We have used these detections to obtain a full-polarimetric image of the blazar at an unprecedented angular resolution of 24 $μ$as, the highest for this source to date. This enabled …
Linear perturbation theory is a powerful toolkit for studying black hole spacetimes. However, the perturbation equations are hard to solve unless we can use separation of variables. In the Kerr spacetime, metric perturbations do not separate, but curvature perturbations do. The cost of curvature perturbations is a very complicated metric-reconstruction procedure. This procedure can be avoided using a symmetry-adapted choice of basis functions in highly symmetric spacetimes, such as near-horizon extremal Kerr. In this paper, we focus on this spacetime, and (i) construct the symmetry-adapted bas…
We quantitatively study the stationary, axisymmetric, force-free magnetospheres of spinning (Kerr) black holes (BHs) and the conditions needed for relativistic jets to be powered by the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. These jets could be from active galactic nuclei, blazars, quasars, micro-quasars, radio active galaxies, and other systems that host Kerr BHs. The structure of the magnetosphere determines how the BH energy is extracted, e.g., via Blandford-Znajek mechanism, which converts the BH rotational energy into Poynting flux. The key assumption is the force-free condition, which requires the …
We report on the first results of the POLAMI program, a simultaneous 3.5 and 1.3mm full-Stokes-polarisation monitoring of a sample of 36 of the brightest active galactic nuclei in the northern sky with the IRAM 30m Telescope. Through a systematic statistical study of data taken from October 2006 (from December 2009 for the case of the 1.3mm observations) to August 2014, we characterise the variability of the total flux density and linear polarisation. We find that all sources in the sample are highly variable in total flux density at both 3.5 and 1.3mm, as well as in spectral index, that is fo…
The dominant radio emission mechanism in radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) is an open question. Primary contenders include: low-power radio jets, winds, star-formation and coronal emission. Our work suggests that radio polarization and emission-line studies can help to distinguish between these scenarios and determine the primary contributor. Our multi-frequency, multi-scale radio polarization study has revealed a composite jet and "wind" radio outflow in the radio-intermediate quasar, III Zw 2, as well as in the BALQSO, Mrk 231. Our radio polarization study in conjunction with the [O III] emission-l…
The Einstein-Maxwell dilaton-axion (EMDA) gravity arises in the low energy effective action of the heterotic string theory and provides a simple framework to explore the signatures of the same. The dilaton and the axion fields inherited in the action from string compactifications have interesting consequences in inflationary cosmology and in explaining the present accelerated expansion of the universe. It is therefore worthwhile to search for the footprints of these fields in the available astrophysical observations. Since Einstein gravity is expected to receive quantum corrections in the high…
