Integrated waveguides exhibiting efficient second-order nonlinearities are crucial to obtain compact and low power optical signal processing devices. Silicon nitride (SiN) has shown second harmonic generation (SHG) capabilities in resonant structures and single-pass devices leveraging intermodal phase matching, which is defined by waveguide design. Lithium niobate allows compensating for the phase mismatch using periodically poled waveguides, however the latter are not reconfigurable and remain difficult to integrate with SiN or silicon (Si) circuits. Here we show the all-optical enhancement of SHG in SiN waveguides by more than 30 dB. We demonstrate that a Watt-level laser causes a periodic modification of the waveguide second-order susceptibility. The resulting second order nonlinear grating has a periodicity allowing for quasi phase matching (QPM) between the pump and SH mode. Moreover, changing the pump wavelength or polarization updates the period, relaxing phase matching constraints imposed by the waveguide geometry. We show that the grating is long term inscribed in the waveguides, and we estimate a second order nonlinearity of the order of 0.3 pm/V, while a maximum conversion efficiency (CE) of 1.8x10-6 W-1 cm-2 is reached.
Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides, as an emerging technology, have proven to offer a promising platform for integrated optics, due to their strong optical confinement comparable to silicon on insulator (SOI) waveguides, while possessing the versatile properties of lithium niobate, such as high electro-optic coefficients. In this paper, we show that mode hybridization, a phenomenon widely found in vertically asymmetric waveguides, can be efficiently modulated in an LNOI ridge waveguide by electro-optic effect, leading to a polarization mode converter with 97% efficiency. Moreover, …
We experimentally demonstrate PT-symmetric optical lattices with periodical gain and loss profiles in a coherently-prepared four-level N-type atomic system. By appropriately tuning the pertinent atomic parameters, the onset of PT-symmetry breaking is observed through measuring an abrupt phase-shift jump between adjacent gain and loss waveguides. The experimental realization of such readily reconfigurable and effectively controllable PT-symmetric waveguide array structure sets a new stage for further exploiting and better understanding the peculiar physical properties of these non-Hermitian sys…
We consider light-induced binding and motion of dielectric microparticles in an optical waveguide that gives rise to a back-action effect such as light transmission oscillating with time. Modeling the particles by dielectric slabs allows us to solve the problem analytically and obtain a rich variety of dynamical regimes both for Newtonian and damped motion. This variety is clearly reflected in temporal oscillations of the light transmission. The characteristic frequencies of the oscillations are within the ultrasound range of the order of $10^{5}$ Hz for micron size particles and injected powe…
Photonic devices exhibiting all-optically reconfigurable polarization dependence with a large dynamic range would be highly attractive for active polarization control. Here, we report that strongly polarization-selective nonlinear optomechanical interactions emerge in subwavelength waveguides. By using full-vectorial finite element analysis, we find that at certain core ellipticities (aspect ratios) the forward simulated light scattering mediated by a specific acoustic mode is eliminated for one polarization mode, whereas that for the other polarization mode is rather enhanced. This intriguing…
Thermal tuning of the optical refractive index in the waveguides to control light phase accumulation is essential in photonic integrated systems and applications. In silicon photonics, microheaters are mainly realized by metal wires or highly doped silicon lines placed at a safe distance (1um) from the waveguide to avoid considerable optical loss. However, this poses a significant limitation for heating efficiency because of the excessive free-carrier loss when a heater is brought closer to the optical path. In this work, we present a new concept of using optically transparent 2D semiconductor…
We investigate the inherent influence of light polarization on the intensity distribution in anisotropic media undergoing a local inhomogeneous rotation of the principal axes. Whereas in general such configuration implies a complicated interaction between geometric and dynamic phase, we show that, in a medium showing an inhomogeneous circular birefringence, the geometric phase vanishes. Due to the spin-orbit interaction, the two circular polarizations perceive reversed spatial distribution of the dynamic phase. Based upon this effect, polarization-selective lens, waveguides and beam deflectors…
Diamond's nitrogen vacancy (NV) center is an optically active defect with long spin coherence times, showing great potential for both efficient nanoscale magnetometry and quantum information processing schemes. Recently, both the formation of buried 3D optical waveguides and high quality single NVs in diamond were demonstrated using the versatile femtosecond laser-writing technique. However, until now, combining these technologies has been an outstanding challenge. In this work, we fabricate laser written photonic waveguides in quantum grade diamond which are aligned to within micron resolutio…

The quality factor of the LN microring resonator is measured as high as 1.54x10^5 at the wavelength of 1542 nm. Lasing action can be observed at a pump power threshold below 3.5 mW using a 980 nm continuous-wave pump laser…
A theoretical study on the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a sub-wavelength anisotropic waveguide is conducted. The optical, photoelastic and mechanical anisotropies of the waveguide materials are all taken into account. First, the integral formulae for calculating the acousto-optical coupling coefficients (AOCCs) due to the photoelastic and moving interface effects in SBS are extended to an optically anisotropic waveguide. Then, with the extended formulae, the SBSs in an elliptical nanowire with strong transverse anisotropies are simulated. In the simulations, the elastic fields are …
We demonstrate a method to monolithically integrate nanowire-based quantum dot single photon sources on-chip using evanescent coupling. By deterministically placing an appropriately tapered III-V nanowire waveguide, containing a single quantum dot, on top of a silicon-based ridge waveguide, the quantum dot emission can be transferred to the ridge waveguide with calculated efficiencies close to 100%. As the evanescent coupling is bidirectional, the source can be optically pumped in both free-space and through the ridge waveguide. The latter onfiguration provides a self-contained, all-fiber, sin…
We optically assess Fresnel zone plates (FZPs) that are designed to guide cold atoms. Imaging of various ring patterns produced by the FZPs gives an average RMS error in the brightest part of the ring of 3% with respect to trap depth. This residue will be due to the imaging system, incident beam shape and FZP manufacturing tolerances. Axial propagation of the potentials is presented experimentally and through numerical simulations, illustrating prospects for atom guiding without requiring light sheets.
We describe a compact waveguide amplifier system that is suitable for optically pumping rubidium magnetometers. The system consists of an auto-locking vacuum-sealed external cavity diode laser, a semiconductor tapered amplifier and a pulsing unit based on an acousto-optic modulator. The diode laser utilises optical feedback from an interference filter to narrow the linewidth of an inexpensive laser diode to ~500 kHz. This output is scannable over an 8 GHz range (at 780 nm) and can be locked without human intervention to any spectral marker in an expandable library of reference spectra, using t…
Microcombs -- optical frequency combs generated in coherently-driven nonlinear microresonators -- have attracted significant attention over the last decade. The ability to generate two such combs in a single resonator device has in particular enabled a host of applications from spectroscopy to imaging. Concurrently, novel comb generation techniques such as synchronous pulsed driving have been developed to enhance the efficiency and flexibility of microcomb generation. Here we report on the first experimental demonstration of dual-microcomb generation via synchronous pulsed pumping of a single …
Optically resonant all-dielectric nanostructures attractively exhibit reduced losses compared to their plasmonic counterparts; however, achieving strong field enhancements at the nanoscale, especially within solid-state media, has remained a significant challenge. In this work, we demonstrate how subwavelength modifications to a conventional silicon nanodisk enable strong sub-diffractive and polarization dependent field enhancements in devices supporting anapole-like modes. We examine the electromagnetic properties of both individual and arrayed diabolo nanodisks, which are found to exhibit |E…
Integrated silicon microwave photonics offers great potential in microwave phase shifter elements, and promises compact and scalable multi-element chips that are free from electromagnetic interference. Stimulated Brillouin scattering, which was recently demonstrated in silicon, is a particularly powerful approach to induce a phase shift due to its inherent flexibility, offering an optically controllable and selective phase shift. However, to date, only moderate amounts of Brillouin gain has been achieved and theoretically this would restrict the phase shift to a few tens of degrees, significan…
Low-loss single-mode optical waveguide fabrication process in extra-white soda-lime glass is demonstrated. Waveguiding structures are formed in bulk substrates employing femtosecond laser writing technology. The combination of a slit beam-shaping method and a multiscan fabrication process enables printing of waveguides with a well-defined symmetric cross-section profile. Fabricated waveguides exhibit 0.86 dB/cm propagation loss for 800~nm wavelength. Bending loss in the waveguides are addressed experimentally and compared with a model for radiation loss.
We explore exceptional points (EP) in a dual-mode symmetric planar optical waveguide with transverse variation of inhomogeneous loss profile; where modal evolution alongside an EP is reported in the context of selective optical mode conversion.
Single-mode high-index-contrast waveguides have been ubiquitously exploited in optical, microwave, and phononic structures for achieving enhanced wave-matter interactions. Although micro-scale optomechanical and electro-optical devices have been widely studied, optomagnonic devices remain a grand challenge at the microscale. Here, we introduce a planar optomagnonic waveguide platform based on a ferrimagnetic insulator that simultaneously supports single transverse mode of spin waves (magnons) and highly confined optical modes. The co-localization of spin and light waves gives rise to enhanced …
A simple and flexible technique for achieving quasi-phase-matching in integrated photonic waveguides without periodic poling is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, referred to as mode-shape-modulation (MSM). It employs a periodic variation of waveguide width to modulate the intensity of the pump wave, effectively suppressing out-of-phase light generation. This technique is applied to the case of second-harmonic generation in thin-film lithium niobate ridge waveguides. MSM waveguides are fabricated and characterized with pulsed-pumping in the near-infrared, showing harmonic generation at …

In the well-known stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) process, spontaneous acoustic phonons in materials are stimulated by laser light and scatter the latter into a Stokes sideband. SBS becomes more pronounced in optical fibers and has been harnessed to amplify optical signals and even achieve lasing. Exploitation of SBS has recently surged on integrated photonics platforms as simultaneous confinement of photons and phonons in waveguides leads to drastically enhanced interaction. Instead of being optically stimulated, coherent phonons can also be electromechanically excited with very high ef…
We formulate a generic concept of engineering optical modes and mechanical resonances in a pair of optically-coupled light-guiding membranes for achieving cascaded light scattering to multiple Stokes and anti-Stokes orders. By utilizing the light pressure exerted on the webs and their induced flexural vibrations, featuring flat phonon dispersion curve with a non-zero cut-off frequency, we show how to realize exact phase-matching between multiple successive optical side-bands. We predict continuous-wave generation of frequency combs for fundamental and high-order optical modes mediated via back…
High-refractive-index semiconductor optical waveguides form the basis for modern photonic integrated circuits (PICs) , but the conventional methods of achieving optical confinement require a thick lower-refractive-index support layer that impedes large-scale co-integration with electronics. To address this challenge, we present a general architecture for single-mode waveguides that confine light in a high-refractive-index material on a native substrate. Our waveguide consists of a high-aspect-ratio fin of the guiding material surrounded by lower-refractive-index dielectrics and is compatible w…
Laser-cooled atoms that are trapped and optically interfaced with light in nanophotonic waveguides are a powerful platform for fundamental research in quantum optics as well as for applications in quantum communication and quantum information processing. Ever since the first realization of such a hybrid quantum nanophotonic, heating rates of the atomic motion observed in various experimental settings have typically been exceeding those in comparable free-space optical microtraps by about three orders of magnitude. This excessive heating is a roadblock for the implementation of certain protocol…
We present a degenerate four-wave mixing experiment on a silicon nitride (SiN) waveguide covered with gated graphene. We observe strong dependencies on signal-pump detuning and Fermi energy, i.e. the optical nonlinearity is demonstrated to be electrically tunable. In the vicinity of the interband absorption edge ($2|E_F|\approx \hbarω$) a peak value of the waveguide nonlinear parameter of $\approx$ 6400 m$^{-1}$W$^{-1}$, corresponding to a graphene nonlinear sheet conductivity $|σ_s^{(3)}|\approx4.3\cdot 10^{-19}$ A m$^2$V$^{-3}$ is measured.
Strong second harmonic generation (SHG) in silicon nitride has been extensively studied-among others, in terms of laser-induced SHG enhancement in Si3N4 waveguides. This enhancement has been ascribed to the all-optical poling induced by the coherent photogalvanic effect. Yet, an analogous process for Si3N4 thin films has not been reported. Our article reports on the observation of laser-induced 3-fold SHG enhancement in Si3N4 thin films. The observed enhancement has many features similar to all-optical poling, such as highly nonlinear power dependence, cumulative effect, or connection to the S…
Understanding light-matter interaction enables harnessing physical effects to translate into new capabilities realized in modern integrated photonics platforms. Here, we present the design and characterization of optofluidic components in integrated photonics platform, and numerically predict a series of novel physical effects which rely on thermocapillary-driven interaction between waveguide modes to topography changes of optically thin liquid dielectric film. Our results indicate that this coupling introduces substantial self-induced phase change in a single channel waveguide, transmittance …
We investigate a tapered, hybrid plasmonic waveguide which has previously been proposed as an optically efficient near-field transducer (NFT), or component thereof, in several devices which aim to exploit nanofocused light. We numerically analyze how light is transported through the waveguide and ultimately focused via effective-mode coupling and taper optimization. Crucial dimensional parameters in this optimization process are identified that are not only necessary to achieve maximum optical throughput, but also optimum thermal performance with specific application towards heat-assisted magn…
We demonstrate fabrication of single-mode optical waveguides on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) by optical patterning combined with chemo-mechanical polishing. The fabricated LNOI waveguides have a nearly symmetric mode profile of a mode field size of ~2.5 micron (full-width at half maximum). We develop a high-precision measurement approach by which the single mode waveguides are characterized to have a propagation loss of ~0.042 dB/cm.
We report fabrication of low loss single mode waveguides on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) cladded by a layer of SiO2. Our technique, termed photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (PLACE), relies on patterning of a chromium film into the mask shape by femtosecond laser micromachining and subsequent chemo-mechanical etching of the lithium niobate thin film. The high-index-contrast single mode waveguide is measured to have a propagation loss of 0.13 dB/cm. Furthermore, waveguide tapers are fabricated for boosting the coupling efficiency.

We demonstrate a waveguide couple Si pin photodetector responsivity of 0.44 A/W at 25 V bias. The frequency response of the photodetector is evaluated by coupling of a femtosecond laser source through SiN grating coupler of the integrated photodetector. We estimate a 3dB bandwidth of 14 GHz at 20 V bias, highest reported bandwidth for a waveguide integrated Si photodetector. We also present detailed optoelectro…
