We study the motion of magnetic skyrmions in a nanowire induced by a spin-wave current $J$ flowing out of a driving layer close to the edge of the wire. By applying micromagnetic simulation and an analysis of the effective Thiele equation, we find that the skyrmion trajectory is governed by an interplay of both forces due to the magnon current and the wire boundary. The skyrmion is attracted to the driving layer and is accelerated by the repulsive force due to the wire boundary. We consider both cases of a driving longitudinal and transverse to the nanowire, but a steady-state motion of the skyrmion is only obtained for a transverse magnon current. For the latter case, we find in the limit of low current densities $J$ the velocity-current relation $v \sim J/α$ where $v$ is the skyrmion velocity and $α$ is the Gilbert damping. For large $J$ in case of strong driving, the skyrmion is pushed into the driving layer resulting in a drop of the skyrmion velocity and, eventually, the destruction of the skyrmion.
We investigate theoretically skyrmion magnonic crystal, i.e., the dynamics of the magnetization in a chain of the ferromagnetic nanodots being in skyrmion magnetic configuration. We show that collective excitations are possible to be observed in the structure. We present the dispersion relation of the coupled skyrmions. It exhibit a periodical property in dependence on wave vector, characteristic feature of the band structure in magnonic crystals. Spatial analysis of the magnetization amplitude associated with the magnonic bands confirms type of the excited modes, as breathing and clockwise gy…
The presence of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) may lead to the appearance of Néel skyrmions in ferromagnetic films. These topologically protected structures, whose diameter is as small as a few nanometers, can be nowadays stabilized at room temperature and have been proposed for the realization of artificial magnonic crystals and new spintronic devices, such as racetrack memories. In this perspective, it is of utmost importance to analyze their dynamical properties in the GHz range, i.e. in the operation range of current communication devices. Here we exploited the softwar…
A new type of magnonic crystals, curvature induced ones, is realized in ferromagnetic nanowires with periodically deformed shape. A magnon band structure of such crystal is fully determined by its curvature: the developed theory is well confirmed by simulations. An application to nanoscale spintronic devises with the geometrically tunable parameters is proposed, namely, to filter elements.
Spin torque nano-oscillator has been extensively studied both theoretically and experimentally in recent decades due to its potential applications in future microwave communication technology and neuromorphic computing. In this work, we present a skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillator driven by a spatially uniform direct current, where the skyrmion is confined by two pinning sites. Different from other skyrmion-based oscillators that arise from the circular motion or the breathing mode of a skyrmion, the steady-state oscillatory motions are produced by the periodic deformation of an elonga…
Reprogrammability of magnonic band structure in layered Permalloy/Cu/Permalloy nanowires is demonstrated to depend on the relative orientation of the two layers magnetization. By using Brillouin light spectroscopy, we show that when the layers are aligned parallel two dispersive modes, with positive and negative group velocity, are observed while when the magnetic layers are aligned anti-parallel, only one dispersive mode, with positive group velocity, is detected. Our findings are successfully compared and interpreted in terms of a microscopic (Hamiltonian-based) method. An explanation for th…
Skyrmions, novel topologically stable spin vortices, hold promise for next-generation magnetic storage due to their nanoscale domains to enable high information storage density and their low threshold for current-driven motion to enable ultralow energy consumption. One-dimensional (1D) nanowires are ideal hosts for skyrmions since they not only serve as a natural platform for magnetic racetrack memory devices but also can potentially stabilize skyrmions. Here we use the topological Hall effect (THE) to study the phase stability and current-driven dynamics of the skyrmions in MnSi nanowires. Th…
In bulk non-centrosymmetric magnets the chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange stabilizes tubular skyrmions with a reversed magnetization in their centers. While the double-twist is favorable in the center of a skyrmion, it gives rise to an excess of the energy density at the outskirt. Therefore, magnetic anisotropies are required to make skyrmions more favorable than the conical spiral state in bulk materials. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that in magnetic nanowires unusual skyrmions with a doubly twisted core and a number of concentric helicoidal undulations (target-skyrmions) are th…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected nanoscale objects, which are promising building blocks for novel magnetic and spintronic devices. Here, we investigate the dynamics of a skyrmion driven by a spin wave in a magnetic nanowire. It is found that (i) the skyrmion is first accelerated and then decelerated exponentially; (ii) it can turn L-corners with both right and left turns; and (iii) it always turns left (right) when the skyrmion number is positive (negative) in the T- and Y-junctions. Our results will be the basis of skyrmionic devices driven by a spin wave.
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable whirlpool-like spin textures that offer great promise as information carriers for future ultra-dense memory and logic devices1-4. To enable such applications, particular attention has been focused on the skyrmions properties in highly confined geometry such as one dimensional nanowires5-8. Hitherto it is still experimentally unclear what happens when the width of the nanowire is comparable to that of a single skyrmion. Here we report the experimental demonstration of such scheme, where magnetic field-driven skyrmion cluster (SC) states with small num…
Magnetic materials hosting correlated electrons play an important role for information technology and signal processing. The currently used ferro-, ferri- and antiferromagnetic materials provide microscopic moments (spins) that are mainly collinear. Recently more complex spin structures such as spin helices and cycloids have regained a lot of interest. The interest has been initiated by the discovery of the skyrmion lattice phase in non-centrosymmetric helical magnets. In this review we address how spin helices and skyrmion lattices enrich the microwave characteristics of magnetic materials. W…
Various latest experiments have proven the theoretical prediction that domain walls in planar magnetic structures can channel spin waves as outstanding magnonic waveguides, establishing a superb platform for building magnonic devices. Recently, three-dimensional nanomagnetism has been boosted up and become a significant branch of magnetism, because three-dimensional magnetic structures expose a lot of emerging physics hidden behind planar ones and will inevitably provide broader room for device engineering. Skyrmions and antiSkyrmions, as natural three-dimensional magnetic configurations, are …
An optical frequency comb consists of a set of discrete and equally spaced frequencies and has found wide applications in the synthesis over broad spectral frequencies of electromagnetic wave and precise optical frequency metrology. Despite the analogies between magnons and photons in many aspects, the analogue of optical frequency comb in magnonic system has not been reported. Here, we theoretically study the magnon-skyrmion interaction and find that magnonic frequency comb (MFC) can be generated above a threshold of driving amplitude, where the nonlinear scattering process involving three ma…
We present a theory of magnetoelectric magnon-photon coupling in cavities hosting noncentrosymmetric magnets. Analogously to nonreciprocal phenomena in multiferroics, the magnetoelectric coupling is time-reversal and inversion asymmetric. This asymmetry establishes a means for exceptional tunability of magnon-photon coupling, which can be switched on and off by reversing the magnetization direction. Taking the multiferroic skyrmion-host Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ with ultralow magnetic damping as an example, we reveal the electrical activity of skyrmion eigenmodes and propose it for magnon-photon splittin…
Magnetic skyrmions have been the focus of intense research with promising applications in memory, logic and interconnect technology. Several schemes have been recently proposed and demonstrated to nucleate skyrmions. However, they either result in an uncontrolled skyrmion bubble production or are mostly targeted towards integration with racetrack memory device. In this work, we propose a novel scheme for a controlled single skyrmion nucleation in a confined nanowire geometry with sub-100 nm width using a generalized approach of "localized spin current injection" technique in material systems e…
In this work we compute the torque field present in a ferromagnet in contact with a metallic nanowire when a skyrmion is present. If the nanowire is narrow enough the current is carried by a single conduction band. In this regime the classical torque model breaks down and we show that a skyrmion driven by spin transfer torque moves in a different direction than predicted by the classical model. However, the amount of charge current required to move a skyrmion with a certain velocity in the single band regime is similar to a classical model of torque where it is implicitly assumed current trans…
Achieving control over magnon spin currents in insulating magnets - where dissipation due to Joule heating is highly suppressed - is an active area of research that could lead to energy-efficient spintronics applications. However, magnon spin currents supported by conventional systems with uniform magnetic order have proven hard to control. An alternative approach that relies on topologically protected magnonic edge states of spatially periodic magnetic textures has recently emerged. A prime example of such textures is the ferromagnetic skyrmion crystal which hosts chiral edge states providing…
We theoretically study the thermal Hall effect by magnons in skyrmion crystal phases of ferrimagnets in the vicinity of the angular momentum compensation point (CP). To this end, we start by deriving the equation of motion for magnons in the background of an arbitrary equilibrium spin texture, which gives rise to the fictitious electromagnetic field for magnons. As the net spin density varies, the resultant equation of motion interpolates between the relativistic Klein-Gordon equation at CP and the nonrelativistic Schr{ö}dinger-like equation away from it. In skyrmion crystal phases, the right-…
We propose a new method to generate magnetic skyrmions through spin-wave focusing in chiral ferromagnets.A lens is constructed to focus spin waves by a curved interface between two ferromagnetic thin films with different perpendicular magnetic anisotropies. Based on the principle of identical magnonic path length, we derive the lens contour that can be either elliptical or hyperbolical depending on the magnon refractive index. Micromagnetic simulations are performed to verify the theoretical design. It is found that under proper condition magnetic skyrmions emerge near the focus point of the l…
Achieving high velocities of magnetic domain walls is a crucial factor for their use as information carriers in modern nanoelectronic applications. In nanomagnetism and spintronics, these velocities are often limited either by internal domain wall instabilities, known as the Walker breakdown phenomenon, or by spin wave emission, known as the magnonic regime. In the rigid domain wall model, the maximum magnon velocity acts as an effective "speed of light", providing a relativistic analogy for the domain wall speed limitation. Cylindrical magnetic nanowires are an example of systems with the abs…
We propose a method to generate magnetic skyrmions by focusing spin waves totally reflected by a curved film edge. Based on the principle of identical magnonic path length, we derive the edge contour that is parabolic and frequency-independent. Micromagnetic simulations are performed to verify our theoretical design. It is found that under proper conditions, magnetic droplet first emerges near the focal point where the spin-wave intensity has been significantly enhanced, and then converts to magnetic skyrmion accompanied by a change of the topological charge. The phase diagram about the amplit…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected excitations of the magnetization vector field with promising applications in spintronics and spin-caloritronics, particularly due to their high mobility. Skyrmions can be steered by a spin-polarized charge current or by exposure to a magnonic spin current. Here, we propose a further method for driving skyrmions by applying an inhomogeneous electric field and a homogeneous thermal bias. We show that the inhomogeneous electric torque leads to an efficient skyrmionic drag which can be thermally assisted as to enhance the skyrmion velocity. The calcul…
Controllable writing and deleting of nanoscale magnetic skyrmions are key requirements for their use as information carriers for next-generation memory and computing technologies. While several schemes have been proposed, they require complex fabrication techniques or precisely tailored electrical inputs, which limits their long-term scalability. Here we demonstrate an alternative approach for writing and deleting skyrmions using conventional electrical pulses within a simple, two-terminal wire geometry. X-ray microscopy experiments and micromagnetic simulations establish the observed skyrmion…
Recent studies have revealed that domain walls in magnetic nanostructures can serve as compact, energy-efficient spin-wave waveguides for building magnonic devices that are considered promising candidates for overcoming the challenges and bottlenecks of today's CMOS technologies. However, imprinting long strip-domain walls into magnetic nanowires remains a challenge, especially in curved geometries. Here, through micromagnetic simulations, we present a method for writing strip-domain walls into curved magnetic nanowires using spin-orbit torque. We employ Y-shaped magnetic nanostructures as wel…
When magnetic skyrmions move under spin orbit torque in magnetic nanowires, they experience a skyrmion Hall effect, which pushes them towards the nanowire edge where they risk being annihilated; this puts an upper limit on how fast they can be driven. However, the same magnetic multilayer harboring skyrmions can sustain a Néel-type strip domain wall along the nanowire length, potentially keeping the skyrmions separated from the edge. Here we study the interplay between current driven skyrmions and domain walls and find that they increase the annihilation current and allow the skyrmions to move…
In the developing field of magnonics,it is very important to achieve tailoring of spin wave propagation by both a proper combination of materials with different magnetic properties and their nanostructuring on the submicrometric scale. We have exploited deep ultra-violet lithography, in combination with tilted shadow deposition technique, to fabricate arrays of closely spaced bi-layer nanowires (NWs), with separation d=100 nm and periodicity a=440 nm, having bottom and top layers made of Permalloy and Iron, respectively. The NWs have either rectangular cross section (bottom and upper layers of…
Strongly-interacting nanomagnetic arrays are crucial across an ever-growing suite of technologies. Spanning neuromorphic computing, control over superconducting vortices and reconfigurable magnonics, the utility and appeal of these arrays lies in their vast range of distinct, stable magnetisation states. Different states exhibit different functional behaviours, making precise, reconfigurable state control an essential cornerstone of such systems. However, few existing methodologies may reverse an arbitrary array element, and even fewer may do so under electrical control, vital for device integ…
Spin waves are the low-energy excitations of magnetically ordered materials. They are key elements in the stability analysis of the ordered phase and have a wealth of technological applications. Recently, we showed that spin waves of a magnetic nanowire may carry a definite amount of orbital angular momentum components along the propagation direction. This helical, in addition to the chiral, character of the spin waves is related to the spatial modulations of the spin wave phase across the wire. It, however, remains a challenge to generate and control such modes with conventional magnetic fiel…
Magnetic skyrmionium is a novel magnetization configuration with zero skyrmion number, which is composed by two skyrmions with opposite skyrmion number. Here, we study the dynamics of skyrmionium under an anisotropy gradient. We find that the skyrmionium can be efficiently driven by an anisotropy gradient with moving straightly along the direction of gradient. The skyrmion Hall angle for skyrmionium is close to zero which is much smaller than that of skyrmion. while the speed is much larger. We also demonstrate that the skyrmionium motion depends on the damping cofficient, and the skyrmionium …
Recent theoretical studies have demonstrated the possibility to excite and sustain noncollinear magnetization states in ferromagnetic nanowires. The resulting state is referred to as a spin-density wave (SDW). SDWs can be interpreted as hydrodynamic states with a constant fluid density and fluid velocity in systems with easy-plane anisotropy. Here, we consider the effect of the nonlocal dipole field arising from the finite thickness of magnetic thin films on the spatial profile of the SDW and on the associated magnon dispersion. Utilizing a hydrodynamic formulation of the Larmor torque equatio…
Diameter-modulated nanowires offer an important paradigm to design the magnetization response of 3D magnetic nanostructures by engineering the domain wall pinning. With the aim to understand its nature and to control the process, we analyze the magnetization response in FeCo modulated polycrystalline two-segment nanowires varying the minor diameter. Our modelling indicates a very complex behavior with a strong dependence on the disorder distribution and an important role of topologically non-trivial magnetization structures. We demonstrate that modulated nanowires with a small diameter differe…
We study the dynamical control of a magnetic skyrmion bubble by using counter-propagating surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in a ferromagnet. First, we determine the bubble mass and derive the force due to SAWs acting on a magnetic bubble using Thiele's method. The force that pushes the bubble is proportional to the strain gradient for the major strain component. We then study the dynamical pinning and motion of magnetic bubbles by SAWs in a nanowire. In a disk geometry, we propose a SAWs-driven skyrmion bubble oscillator with two resonant frequencies.
Engineering a driven-dissipative bath of altermagnetic quantum magnons for controlling classical dynamics of spins hosting spin waves, domain walls, or skyrmions
We consider current-driven motion of magnetic skyrmions in granular magnetic films. The study uses micromagnetic modeling and phenomenological analysis based on the Thiele formalism. Remarkably, disorder enhances the effective skyrmion Hall effect that depends on the magnitude of the driving force (current density and non-adiabaticity parameter). The origin is sliding motion of the skyrmion along the grain boundaries, followed by pinning and depinning at the grain junctions. A side-jump can occur during this depinning process. In addition, the critical current that triggers the skyrmion motion…
The spin wave transportation through a transverse magnetic domain wall (DW) in a magnetic nanowire is studied. It is found that spin wave passes through a DW without reflection. A magnon, the quantum of the spin wave, carries opposite spins on the two sides of the DW. As a result, there is a spin angular momentum transfer from the propagating magnons to the DW. This magnonic spin-transfer torque can efficiently drive a DW to propagate in the opposite direction to that of the spin wave.
We show that a temperature gradient induces an ac electric current in multiferroic insulators when the sample is embedded in a circuit. We also show that a thermal gradient can be used to move magnetic skyrmions in insulating chiral magnets: the induced magnon flow from the hot to the cold region drives the skyrmions in the opposite direction via a magnonic spin transfer torque. Both results are combined to compute the effect of skyrmion motion on the ac current generation and demonstrate that skyrmions in insulators are a promising route for spin caloritronics applications.
Recent advances in the physics of current-driven antiferromagnetic skyrmions have observed the absence of a Magnus force. We outline the symmetry reasons for this phenomenon, and show that this cancellation will fail in the case of spin polarized currents. Pairing micromagnetic simulations with semiclassical spin wave transport theory, we demonstrate that skyrmions produce a spin-polarized transverse magnon current, and that spin-polarized magnon currents can in turn produce transverse motion of antiferromagnetic skyrmions. We examine qualitative differences in the frequency dependence of the …
We investigate the torque field and skyrmion movement at an interface between a ferromagnet hosting a skyrmion and a material with strong spin-orbit interaction. We analyze both semiconductor materials and topological insulators using a Hamiltonian model that includes a linear term. The spin torque inducing current is considered to flow in the single band limit therefore a quantum model of current is used. Skyrmion movement due spin transfer torque proves to be more difficult in presence of spin orbit interaction in the case where only interface in-plane currents are present. However, edge eff…
We study the dynamics of a skyrmion in a magnetic insulating nanowire in the presence of time-dependent oscillating magnetic field gradients. These ac fields act as a net driving force on the skyrmion via its own intrinsic magnetic excitations. In a microscopic quantum field theory approach we include the unavoidable coupling of the external field to the magnons, which gives rise to time-dependent dissipation for the skyrmion. We demonstrate that the magnetic ac field induces a super-Ohmic to Ohmic crossover behavior for the skyrmion dissipation kernels with time-dependent Ohmic terms. The ac …
Magnetic materials in which it is possible to control the topology of their magnetic order in real space or the topology of their magnetic excitations in reciprocal space are highly sought-after as platforms for alternative data storage and computing architectures. Here we show that multiferroic insulators, owing to their magneto-electric coupling, offer a natural and advantageous way to address these two different topologies using laser fields. We demonstrate that via a delicate balance between the energy injection from a high-frequency laser and dissipation, single skyrmions -- archetypical …
Skyrmion racetrack memory has a lots of potential in future non-volatile solid state devices. In general such devices require current to nucleate skyrmions via spin transfer torque (STT) effect. Further the current is also required to drive the skyrmions in the nanowire device. However the current applied during nucleation of successive skyrmions may have unwanted perturbation \emph{viz.} Joule heating and skyrmion Hall effect, on the propagation of previously generated skyrmions. Therefore new methodology is required to decouple the generation and propagation of skyrmions. Here we present a n…
Spin torque oscillators (STOs) are emerging microwave devices that can potentially be used in spin-logic devices and the next-generation high-speed computing architecture. Thanks to their non-linear nature, STOs are easily tunable by the magnetic field and the dc current. Spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) are promising types of STOs and most of the current studies focus on localized modes that can be easily excited. Here, we study using micromagnetic simulations, the nature of the spin-torque-induced excitations in nanowire devices made of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) material. Our…
We present a path integral formalism for the intrinsic quantum dynamics of magnetic skyrmions coupled to a thermal background of magnetic fluctuations. Upon promoting the skyrmion's collective coordinate $\boldsymbol{R}$ to a dynamic variable and integrating out the magnonic heat bath, we derive the generalized equation of motion for $\boldsymbol{R}$ with a non-local damping term that describes a steady-state skyrmion dynamics at finite temperatures. Being essentially temperature dependent, the intrinsic damping is shown to originate from the coupling of thermally activated magnon modes to the…
Magnetic insulators, such as yttrium iron garnet (Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$), are ideal materials for ultra-low power spintronics applications due to their low energy dissipation and efficient spin current generation and transmission. Recently, it has been realized that spin dynamics can be driven very effectively in micrometer-sized Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$/Pt heterostructures by spin-Hall effects. We demonstrate here the excitation and detection of spin dynamics in Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$/Pt nanowires by spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance. The nanowires defined via electron-beam lithography are fabricated…
Using newly developed quantum-classical hybrid framework, we investigate interaction between spin-polarized conduction electrons and a single spin wave (SW) coherently excited within a metallic ferromagnetic nanowire. When the nanowire hosting SW is attached to two normal metal (NM) leads, with no dc bias voltage applied between them, the SW pumps chiral electronic charge and spin currents into the leads---their direction is tied to the direction of SW propagation and they scale linearly with the frequency of the precession. This is in contrast to: standard pumping by the uniform precession mo…
