Primordial black holes (PBHs) have long been suggested as a viable candidate for the elusive dark matter (DM). The abundance of such PBHs has been constrained using a number of astrophysical observations, except for a hitherto unexplored mass window of $M_{\rm PBH}=[10^{-14},10^{-9}]M_\odot$. Here we carry out a dense-cadence (2~min sampling rate), 7 hour-long observation of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) with the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam to search for microlensing of stars in M31 by PBHs lying in the halo regions of the Milky Way (MW) and M31. Given our simultaneous monitoring of tens of millions of stars in M31, if such light PBHs make up a significant fraction of DM, we expect to find many microlensing events for the PBH DM scenario. However, we identify only a single candidate event, which translates into the most stringent upper bounds on the abundance of PBHs in the mass range $M_{\rm PBH}\simeq [10^{-11}, 10^{-6}]M_\odot$.
A non-negligible fraction of the QCD axion dark matter may form gravitationally bound Bose Einstein condensates, which are commonly known as axion stars or axion clumps. Such astrophysical objects have been recently proposed as the cause for the single candidate event reported by Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) microlensing search in the Andromeda galaxy. Depending on the breaking scale of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry and the details of the dark matter scenario, QCD axion clumps may form via gravitational condensation during radiation domination, in the dense core of axion miniclusters, or within …
We present the physical properties of AKARI sources without optical counterparts in optical images from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru telescope. Using the AKARI infrared (IR) source catalog and HSC optical catalog, we select 583 objects that do not have HSC counterparts in the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) wide survey field ($\sim 5$ deg$^{2}$). Because the HSC limiting magnitude is deep ($g_{\rm AB}$ $\sim 28.6$), these are good candidates for extremely red star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and/or active galactic nuclei (AGNs), possibly at high redshifts. We compile multi-wavelength …
We utilize the galaxy shape catalogue from the first-year data release of the Subaru Hyper Suprime-cam Survey (HSC) to study the dark matter content of galaxy groups in the Universe using weak lensing. We use galaxy groups from the Galaxy Mass and Assembly galaxy survey in approximately $100$ sq. degrees of the sky that overlap with the HSC survey as lenses. We restrict our analysis to the $1587$ groups with at least five members. We divide these groups into six bins each of group luminosity and group member velocity dispersion and measure the lensing signal with a signal-to-noise ratio of $55…
The spatial inhomogeneity is one of the important features for understanding the reionization process; however, it has not yet been fully quantified. To map this inhomogeneous distribution, we simultaneously detect Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) and Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at $z \sim 6.6$ from the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) large-area ($\sim1.5\,\mathrm{ deg}^2 = 34000\,\mathrm{cMpc}^2$) deep survey. We estimate the neutral fraction, $x_\mathrm{HI}$, from the observed number density ratio of LAEs to LBGs, $n(\mathrm{LAE})/n(\mathrm{LBG})$ based on numerical radiative transfer simulation, in whi…
We study the angular correlation function of star-forming galaxies and properties of their host dark matter halos at z>1 using the Hyper-Suprime Cam (HSC) SSP survey. We use [OII] emitters identified using two narrow-band (NB) filters, NB816 and NB921, in the Deep/UltraDeep layers, which respectively cover large angular areas of 16.3 deg^2 and 16.9 deg^2. Our sample contains 8302 and 9578 [OII] emitters at z=1.19 (NB816) and z=1.47 (NB921), respectively. We detect a strong clustering signal over a wide angular range, 0.001 < θ< 1 [deg], with the bias $b=1.61^{+0.13}_{-0.11}$ (z=1.19) and $b=2.…
We present the deepest optical images of the COSMOS field based on a joint dataset taken with Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) by the HSC Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) team and the University of Hawaii (UH). The COSMOS field is one of the key extragalactic fields with a wealth of deep, multi-wavelength data. However, the current optical data are not sufficiently deep to match with, e.g., the UltraVista data in the near-infrared. The SSP team and UH have joined forces to produce very deep optical images of the COSMOS field by combining data from both teams. The coadd images reach depths of g=27.8, r=27…
We present a photometric survey of the stellar halo of the Andromeda galaxy, using Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. A detailed analysis of VI color-magnitude diagrams of the resolved stellar population is used to measure properties such as line-of-sight distance, surface brightness, metallicity, and age, and these are used to isolate and characterize different components of the M31 halo: (1) several substructures, and (2) the smooth halo. First, we study M31's halo substructure along the north-west/south-east minor axis out to R ~ 100 kpc and the south-west major axis region at R ~ 60 kpc.…
We present the environmental dependence of colour, stellar mass, and star formation (SF) activity in H-alpha-selected galaxies along the large-scale structure at z=0.4 hosting twin clusters in DEEP2-3 field, discovered by Subaru Strategic Programme of Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC SSP). By combining photo-z selected galaxies and H-alpha emitters selected with broad-band and narrow-band (NB) data of the recent data release of HSC SSP (DR1), we confirm that galaxies in higher-density environments or galaxies in the cluster central regions show redder colours. We find that there still remains a possible…
We present the SILVERRUSH program strategy and clustering properties investigated with $\sim 2,000$ Ly$α$ emitters at $z=5.7$ and $6.6$ found in the early data of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey exploiting the carefully designed narrowband filters. We derive angular correlation functions with the unprecedentedly large samples of LAEs at $z=6-7$ over the large total area of $14-21$ deg$^2$ corresponding to $0.3-0.5$ comoving Gpc$^2$. We obtain the average large-scale bias values of $b_{\rm avg}=4.1\pm 0.2$ ($4.5\pm 0.6$) at $z=5.7$ ($z=6.6$) for $\gtrsim L^*$ LAEs, i…
Subaru Strategic Program with the Hyper-Suprime Cam (HSC-SSP) has proven to be successful with its extremely-wide area coverage in past years. Taking advantages of this feature, we report initial results from exploration and research of expansive over- and under-dense structures at $z=$ 0.3-1 based on the second Public Data Release where optical 5-band photometric data for $\sim$ eight million sources with $i<23$ mag are available over $\sim360$ square degrees. We not only confirm known superclusters but also find candidates of titanic over- and under-dense regions out to $z=1$. The mock data …
Constraining the relation between the richness $N$ and the halo mass $M$ over a wide redshift range for optically-selected clusters is a key ingredient for cluster-related science in optical surveys, including the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. We measure stacked weak lensing profiles around 1747 HSC CAMIRA clusters over a redshift range of $0.1\leq z_{\rm cl}\leq 1.0$ with $N\geq 15$ using the HSC first-year shear catalog covering $\sim$$140$ ${\rm deg^2}$. The exquisite depth and image quality of the HSC survey allow us to measure lensing signals around the high-redshift clusters at …
We present the clustering properties of low-$z$ $(z\leq1.4)$ galaxies selected by the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program Wide layer over $145$ deg$^{2}$. The wide-field and multi-wavelength observation yields $5,064,770$ galaxies at $0.3\leq z\leq1.4$ with photometric redshifts and physical properties. This enables the accurate measurement of angular correlation functions and subsequent halo occupation distribution (HOD) analysis allows the connection between baryonic properties and dark halo properties. The fraction of less-massive satellite galaxies at $z\lesssim1$ is found to be alm…
We present a weak-lensing analysis of X-ray galaxy groups and clusters selected from the XMM-XXL survey using the first-year data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program. Our joint weak-lensing and X-ray analysis focuses on 136 spectroscopically confirmed X-ray-selected systems at 0.031 < z < 1.033 detected in the 25sqdeg XXL-N region. We characterize the mass distributions of individual clusters and establish the concentration-mass (c-M) relation for the XXL sample, by accounting for selection bias and statistical effects, and marginalizing over the remaining mass calibratio…
This paper reports our discovery of the most massive supercluster, termed the King Ghidorah Supercluster (KGSc), at $z=0.50-0.64$ in the Third Public Data Release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP PDR3) over 690 deg$^2$, as well as an initial result for a galaxy and dark matter mapping. The primary structure of the KGSc comprises triple broad weak-lensing (WL) peaks over 70 comoving Mpc. Such extensive WL detection at $z>0.5$ can only currently be achieved using the wide-field high-quality images produced by the HSC-SSP. The structure is also contiguous with multiple l…
Recent constraints on the splashback radius around optically selected galaxy clusters from the redMaPPer cluster-finding algorithm in the literature have shown that the observed splashback radius is $\sim 20\%$ smaller than that predicted by N-body simulations. We present analyses on the splashback features around $\sim 3000$ optically selected galaxy clusters detected by the independent cluster-finding algorithm CAMIRA over a wide redshift range of $0.1<z_{\rm cl}<1.0$ from the second public data release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program covering $\sim 427~{\rm deg}^2$ f…
We examine the clustering of quasars over a wide luminosity range, by utilizing 901 quasars at $\overline{z}_{\rm phot}\sim3.8$ with $-24.73<M_{\rm 1450}<-22.23$ photometrically selected from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) S16A Wide2 date release and 342 more luminous quasars at $3.4<z_{\rm spec}<4.6$ having $-28.0<M_{\rm 1450}<-23.95$ from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) that fall in the HSC survey fields. We measure the bias factors of two quasar samples by evaluating the cross-correlation functions (CCFs) between the quasar samples and 25790 bright $z\sim4$ Lym…
Cross-correlations between galaxy weak lensing (WL) and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing are a powerful tool to probe matter fluctuations at intermediate redshifts and to detect residual systematics in either probe. In this paper, we study the cross-correlation of galaxy WL from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC) first data release and CMB lensing from the final Planck data release, for HSC source galaxies at 0.3< z < 1.5. HSC is the deepest Stage-III galaxy WL survey, and provides both a great opportunity to study the high-redshift universe and new challenges relate…
We report the weak lensing measurement of filaments between Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) III/Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) CMASS galaxy pairs at $z\sim0.55$, using the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) first-year galaxy shape catalogue. Despite of the small overlap of $140$ deg$^2$ between these surveys we detect the filament lensing signal at 3.9$σ$ significance, which is the highest signal-to-noise lensing measurement of filaments between galaxy-scale halos at this redshift range. We derive a theoretical prediction and covariance using mock catalogues based on full-sky ray-t…
We report our first discoveries of high-redshift supernovae from the Subaru HIgh-Z sUpernova CAmpaign (SHIZUCA), the transient survey using Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam. We report the discovery of three supernovae at the spectroscopically-confirmed redshifts of 2.399 (HSC16adga), 1.965 (HSC17auzg), and 1.851 (HSC17dbpf), and two supernova candidates with the host-galaxy photometric redshifts of 3.2 (HSC16apuo) and 4.2 (HSC17dsid), respectively. In this paper, we present their photometric properties and the spectroscopic properties of the confirmed high-redshift supernovae are presented in the acco…
We present wide-field (167 deg$^2$) weak lensing mass maps from the Hyper Supreme-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). We compare these weak lensing based dark matter maps with maps of the distribution of the stellar mass associated with luminous red galaxies. We find a strong correlation between these two maps with a correlation coefficient of $ρ=0.54\pm0.03$ (for a smoothing size of $8'$). This correlation is detected even with a smaller smoothing scale of $2'$ ($ρ=0.34\pm 0.01$). This detection is made uniquely possible because of the high source density of the HSC-SSP weak lensing surve…
A new constraint on galaxy-halo connections of [O II] emitters via HOD modelling with angular clustering and luminosity functions from the Subaru HSC survey
We report on the discovery of a new Milky Way (MW) satellite in Boötes based on data from the on-going Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP). This satellite, named Boötes IV, is the third ultra-faint dwarf that we have discovered in the HSC-SSP. We have identified a statistically significant (32.3$σ$) overdensity of stars having characteristics of a metal-poor, old stellar population. The distance to this stellar system is $D_{\odot}=209^{+20}_{-18}$ kpc with a $V$-band absolute magnitude of $M_V=-4.53^{+0.23}_{-0.21}$ mag. Boötes IV has a half-light radius of $r_h=462^{+98}_{…
The paper presents the third data release of Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP), a wide-field multi-band imaging survey with the Subaru 8.2m telescope. HSC-SSP has three survey layers (Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep) with different area coverages and depths, designed to address a wide array of astrophysical questions. This third release from HSC-SSP includes data from 278 nights of observing time and covers about 670 square degrees in all five broad-band filters at the full depth ($\sim26$~mag at $5σ$) in the Wide layer. If we include partially observed area, the release covers 1,…

We present the results of a systematic X-ray analysis of optically rich galaxy clusters detected by the Subaru HSC survey in the eROSITA eFEDS field. Through a joint analysis of SRG/eROSITA and Subaru/HSC surveys, we aim to study the dynamical status of the optically selected clusters and derive the cluster scaling relations. The sample consists of 43 optically selected galaxy clusters with a richness $>40$ in $0.16<z<0.89$. We systematically analyzed the X-ray images and spectra using the eROSITA data. We identified the BCG using the optical and far-infrared databases. We evaluated the cluste…
We present an optically-selected cluster catalog from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program. The HSC images are sufficiently deep to detect cluster member galaxies down to $M_*\sim 10^{10.2}M_\odot$ even at $z\sim 1$, allowing a reliable cluster detection at such high redshifts. We apply the CAMIRA algorithm to the HSC Wide S16A dataset covering $\sim 232$ deg$^2$ to construct a catalog of 1921 clusters at redshift $0.1<z<1.1$ and richness $\hat{N}_{\rm mem}>15$ that roughly corresponds to $M_{\rm 200m}\gtrsim 10^{14}h^{-1}M_\odot$. We confirm good cluster photometric redshift p…
We present the spectroscopic discovery of 69 quasars at 5.8 < z < 7.0, drawn from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) imaging survey data. This is the 16th publication from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, and completes identification of all but the faintest candidates (i.e., i-band dropouts with zAB < 24 and y-band detections, and z-band dropouts with yAB < 24) with Bayesian quasar probability Pq > 0.1 in the HSC-SSP third public data release (PDR3). The sample reported here also includes three quasars with Pq < 0.1 at z ~ 6.6, …
We present the result of searching for clusters of galaxies based on weak gravitational lensing analysis of the $\sim 160$~deg$^2$ area surveyed by Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) as a Subaru Strategic Program. HSC is a new prime focus optical imager with a 1.5 diameter field of view on the 8.2-meter Subaru telescope. The superb median seeing on the HSC $i$-band images of $0.56$ arcsec allows the reconstruction of high angular resolution mass maps via weak lensing, which is crucial for the weak lensing cluster search. We identify 65 mass map peaks with signal-to-noise (SN) ratio larger than 4.7, and c…
We propose a deep-learning approach based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) to reduce noise in weak lensing mass maps under realistic conditions. We apply image-to-image translation using conditional GANs to the mass map obtained from the first-year data of Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. We train the conditional GANs by using 25000 mock HSC catalogues that directly incorporate a variety of observational effects. We study the non-Gaussian information in denoised maps using one-point probability distribution functions (PDFs) and also perform matching analysis for positive peaks a…
The north ecliptic pole (NEP) field is a natural deep field location for many satellite observations. It has been targeted manytimes since it was surveyed by the AKARI space telescope with its unique wavelength coverage from the near- to mid-infrared(mid-IR). Many follow-up observations have been carried out and made this field one of the most frequently observed areas witha variety of facilities, accumulating abundant panchromatic data from X-ray to radio wavelength range. Recently, a deep opticalsurvey with the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) at the Subaru telescope covered the NEP-Wide (NEPW) field…
Using the extended halo-based group finder developed by Yang et al. (2021), which is able to deal with galaxies via spectroscopic and photometric redshifts simultaneously, we construct galaxy group and candidate protocluster catalogs in a wide redshift range ($0 < z < 6$) from the joint CFHT Large Area $U$-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) deep data set. Based on a selection of 5,607,052 galaxies with $i$-band magnitude $m_{i} < 26$ and a sky coverage of $34.41\ {\rm deg}^2$, we identify a total of 2,232,134 groups, within which 402,947 groups h…
The SRG/eROSITA All-Sky Survey. The Weak-Lensing Mass Calibration and the Stellar Mass-to-Halo Mass Relation from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program
We measure cosmic weak lensing shear power spectra with the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey first-year shear catalog covering 137deg$^2$ of the sky. Thanks to the high effective galaxy number density of $\sim$17 arcmin$^{-2}$ even after conservative cuts such as magnitude cut of $i<24.5$ and photometric redshift cut of $0.3\leq z \leq 1.5$, we obtain a high significance measurement of the cosmic shear power spectra in 4 tomographic redshift bins, achieving a total signal-to-noise ratio of 16 in the multipole range $300 \leq \ell \leq 1900$. We carefully account for various uncertainties …
We investigate gravitational microlensing signals produced by a spatially extended object transiting in front of a finite-sized source star. The most interesting features arise for lens and source sizes comparable to the Einstein radius of the setup. Using this information, we obtain constraints from the Subaru-HSC survey of M31 on the dark matter populations of NFW subhalos and boson stars of asteroid to Earth masses. These lens profiles capture the qualitative behavior of a wide range of dark matter substructures. We find that deviations from constraints on point-like lenses (e.g. primordial…
We propose a novel method to detect cosmic magnification signals by cross-correlating foreground convergence fields constructed from galaxy shear measurements with background galaxy positional distributions, namely shear-number density correlation. We apply it to the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) survey data. With 27 non-independent data points and their full covariance, $χ_0^2\approx 34.1$ and $χ_T^2\approx 24.0$ with respect to the null and the cosmological model with the parameters from HSC shear correlation analyses in Hamana et al. 2020 (arXiv:1906.06041), respectiv…
We present cosmological constraints from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) first-year weak lensing shear catalogue using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and conventional summary statistics. We crop 19 $3\times3\,\mathrm{{deg}^2}$ sub-fields from the first-year area, divide the galaxies with redshift $0.3\le z\le1.5$ into four equally-spaced redshift bins, and perform tomographic analyses. We develop a pipeline to generate simulated convergence maps from cosmological $N$-body simulations, where we account for effects such as intrinsic alignments (IAs), baryons, photometric redshift errors…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) can constitute the predominant fraction of dark matter (DM) if PBHs reside in the currently unconstrained "sublunar" mass range. PBHs originating from scalar perturbations generated during inflation can naturally appear with a broad spectrum in a class of models. The resulting stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background generated from such PBH production can account for the recently reported North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) pulsar timing array data signal, and will be testable in future GW observations by interferometer-typ…
We present the first weak-lensing mass calibration and X-ray scaling relations of galaxy clusters and groups selected in the $eROSITA$ Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS) observed by Spectrum Roentgen Gamma/$eROSITA$ over a contiguous footprint with an area of $\approx140$ deg$^2$, using the three-year (S19A) weak-lensing data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. In this work, a sample of $434$ optically confirmed galaxy clusters (and groups) at redshift $0.01\lesssim z \lesssim1.3$ with a median of $0.35$ is studied, of which $313$ systems are uniformly covered …
Microlensing of stars places significant constraints on sub-planetary-mass compact objects, including primordial black holes, as dark matter candidates. As the lens' Einstein radius in the source plane becomes comparable to the size of the light source, however, source amplification is strongly suppressed, making it challenging to constrain lenses with a mass at or below $10^{-10}$ solar masses, i.e. asteroid-mass objects. Current constraints, using Subaru HSC observations of M31, assume a fixed source size of one solar radius. Here we point out that the actual stars in M31 bright enough to be…
