Periodic metallic structures are known to support resonant extraordinary transmission (EOT). When covered with graphene, these structures can be employed to effectively manipulate the light. In this work, we propose an analytical circuit model for graphene-covered one-dimensional metallic gratings. By using the circuit theory, we demonstrate that one-dimensional periodic array of cut-through slits which are covered by a continuous graphene sheet exhibit tunable EOT resonance whose amplitude, unlike its spectral position, can be dynamically tuned by varying the Fermi level of graphene. In this fashion, it is shown that placing a perfect reflector at the bottom of the graphene-covered metallic grating results in the realization of a graphene-based absorber. By utilizing the circuit theory, it is illustrated that perfect absorption in the structure is not exclusive to the TM polarization, but also the TE polarized plane waves can be completely absorbed by duly adjusting the Fermi level of graphene. Criteria for the enhanced absorption are accordingly presented. Results of this work may provide a useful tool for designing novel devices based on the graphene-covered metallic gratings such as filters, modulators and efficient absorbers.
We present an intuitive analytical model for extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through corrugated metallic films. In the framework of this model, EOT emerges from standing wave resonances of the different diffraction orders, and is an inherent property of periodic structures, which does not require specific polarization dependent properties such as surface plasmons. The model correctly predicts the conditions for the EOT resonances in various geometrical configurations, in both TE and TM polarizations, and in the subwavelength and non-subwavelength spectral regimes, using the same underl…
In this paper we present an efficient Coupled-wave surface-impedance method for the analysis of extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through single and stacked realistic metallic screens under normal and oblique incidence, including possible dielectric interlayers. The proposed theory is valid for the complete frequency range where EOT has been reported, including microwaves and optics. Electromagnetic simulations validate the results of the model, which allows for a fast and accurate characterization of the analyzed structures.
We obtain in TM polarization an analytical expression of the scattering matrix of one infinitely conducting metallic lamellar grating with subwavelength slits. The theory is based on the Monomode Modal Method which consists in considering only one propagative mode in grating slits. Two expressions are exposed. The first one comes directly from the theory equations and the second one clearly reveals the Airy-like form of the scattering matrix terms. The theory is validated on a multi-grating object and the stability of the numerical results are shown at the same time. This work provides a basic…
Extraordinary transmission through subwavelength metallic apertures has been extensively studied and demonstrated. At resonance, the coupling between surface plasmons on both surfaces of the metallic film tunnels the photon from the one side to the other through the subwavelength aperture with small transmission efficiency based on the metals dielectric parameters and aperture geometrical dimensions. Here, we report a completely different form of extraordinary transmission, where the two subwavelength complementary apertures when coupled with an optical cavity induce about 100% extraordinary t…
A composite plasmonic slab based on double-layer metallic gratings and a dielectric film is experimentally and numerically demonstrated in terahertz (THz) regions, which can support two resonance modes and then form a broad bandgap (40%). As compared to the double-layer metal grating, the dielectric film in composite THz slabs significantly enhances the transmission of the transverse magnetic (TM) mode. Electric field vector proved that the low-frequency resonance mode originates from the symmetric plasmonic mode and the high-frequency resonance mode is induced by the hybrid mode of plasmonic …
Plasmonic resonances in metallic nanoparticles are exploited to create efficient optical filtering functions. A Finite Element Method is used to model metallic nanoparticles gratings. The accuracy of this method is shown by comparing numerical results with measurements on a two-dimensional grating of gold nanocylinders with elliptic cross section. Then a parametric analysis is performed in order to design efficient filters with polarization dependent properties together with high transparency over the visible range. The behavior of nanoparticle gratings is also modelled using the Maxwell-Garne…
Complex photonic band structures (CPBS) of transmission metallic gratings with rectangular slits are shown to exhibit strong discontinuities that are not evidenced in the usual energetic band structures. These discontinuities are located on Wood's anomalies and reveal unambiguously two different types of resonances, which are identified as horizontal and vertical surface-plasmon resonances. Spectral position and width of peaks in the transmission spectrum can be directly extracted from CPBS for both kinds of resonances.
One dimensional rectangular metallic gratings enable enhanced transmission of light for specific resonance frequencies. Two kinds of modes participating to enhanced transmission have already been demonstrated : (i) waveguide modes and (ii) surface plasmon polaritons (SPP). Since the original paper of Hessel and Oliner \cite{hessel} pointing out the existence of (i), no progress was made in their understanding. We present here a carefull analysis, and show that the coupling between the light and such resonances can be tremendously improved using an {\it evanescent} wave. This leads to enhanced …
The extraordinary transmission of light through a nano slit in a metal film is enhanced by introducing a nano cavity antenna formed by a nearby metallic nano-strip over the slit opening. For a fixed wavelength, the width of the metallic nano-strip should be chosen to make the horizontal metal-insulator-metal waveguide of finite length resonant as a Fabry-Perot cavity. When such a cavity antenna is used to enhance the transmission through a non-resonant nano slit, the slit should be opened at a position with maximal magnetic field in the horizontal resonant cavity. It is shown that an optimized…
In this letter, we demonstrate for the first time that by combining the effects of the Wood-Rayleigh Anomaly (WRA) and the Fabry-Perot (FP) resonance, transmission efficiencies of $1$D metallo-dielectric gratings on substrates can be significantly improved compared to when these two phenomena work separately. Results of combining the WRA and the FP resonance can be utilized to eliminate the necessity of using the index matching technique and the core-shell structure for enhancing the performance of extraordinary optical transmission devices. Further, the outcomes of combining the WRA and the F…
We propose a monolithic optical bandpass filter with a transmission bandwidth tunable by the incident angle in a tri-mode high-contrast grating (HCG). We attribute this extraordinary phenomenon to the destructive interference between the TM$_{0}$ and TM$_{2}$ modes and the Fabry-Pérot resonance of the TM1 mode, which can only be excited at the oblique incidence. The transmission bandwidth can be tuned from zero at normal incidence and increases quadratically with incident angle, while the center wavelength reds shifts slightly. The corresponding Q factor can be continuously tuned from 10$^{6}$…
In this Letter, we study the transmission response of microwaves through two identical metallic plates machined with ultranarrow slit arrays. The measured and calculated transmission spectra consistently display a striking transmission peak at wavelength much larger than any characteristic length of the structure (e.g., about twenty-fold of the lattice period), which can not be directly explained by the existing mechanisms. Both the LC-circuit-based microscopic picture and the effective-medium-based macroscopic model are established to capture the essential physics behind such unexpected reson…
The intensity of Smith-Purcell radiation from metallic and dielectric gratings (silicon, silica) is compared in a frequency-domain simulation. The numerical model is discussed and verified with the Frank-Tamm formula for Cherenkov radiation. For 30 keV electrons, rectangular dielectric gratings are less efficient than their metallic counterpart, by an order of magnitude for silicon, and two orders of magnitude for silica. For all gratings studied, radiation intensity oscillates with grating tooth height due to electromagnetic resonances in the grating. 3D and 2D numerical models are compared.
In this work, we design a new tunable nanofocusing lens by the linear-variant depths and nonlinear-variant widths of circular grating for far field practical applications. The constructively interference of cylindrical surface plasmon launched by the subwavelength metallic structure can form a subdiffraction-limited focus, and the focal length of the this structures can be adjusted if the each groove depth and width of circular grating are arranged in traced profile. According to the numerical calculation, the range of focusing points shift is much more than other plasmonic lens, and the relat…
We show a large enhancement of two-photon absorption processes in nanocrystal quantum dots and of light upconversion efficiency from the IR to the near-IR spectral regime, using a hybrid optical device in which near-IR emitting InAs quantum dots were embedded on top a metallic nanoslit array. The resonant enhancement of these nonlinear optical processes is due to the strong local electromagnetic field enhancements inside the nanoslit array structure at the extraordinary transmission resonances. A maximal two-photon absorption enhancement of more than 20 was inferred. Different high field regio…
We have developed theory for the interaction of THz radiation with a sub-wavelength metallic grating. The structure of electric fields of the electromagnetic wave under the metallic grating has been studied in the near-field zone. Spatial distributions of the electric field components and the electric energy density have been obtained for the transmitted wave through the grating. An effect of strong local enhancement of the electric field has been detected. Spatial dependences of the polarization of the transmitted wave has been analyzed for the near-field zone.
Application of the differential method (also called the C method) to plane-wave diffraction by a perfectly conducting, sinusoidally corrugated metallic grating coated with a linear, homogeneous, isotropic, lossless dielectric-magnetic material shows that coating materials with negative index of refraction may deliver enhanced maximum nonspecular reflection efficiencies in comparison to coating materials with positive index of refraction.
Plasmonic metasurfaces are investigated that consist of a sub wavelength line pattern in an ultrathin (~ 10 nm) silver film, designed for extraordinarily suppressed transmission (EOST) in the visible spectral range. Measurements with a near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) demonstrate that far field irradiation creates resonant excitations of antenna like (bright) modes that are localized on the metal ridges. In contrast, bound (dark) surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) launched from an NSOM tip propagate well across the metasurface, preferentially perpendicular to the grating lines.
In this letter we present an analytical theory of Extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through semi-transparent screens, such as thin metallic plates or high permittivity dielectric slabs. Using this theory we show that EOT appears not only for screens perforated by holes or slits, but also for screens loaded by any defects, including opaque defects. These results widen the scope of EOT concept, opening up the way to the study of new physical effects.
Using the Fourier modal method (FMM) we report our analysis of the transmission resonances of a plasmonic grating with sub-wavelength period and extremely narrow slits for wavelengths of the incoming, transverse magnetic (TM)-polarized, radiation ranging from 240nm to 1500nm and incident angles from 0 degree to 90 degree. In particular, we study the case of a silver grating placed in vacuo. Consistent with previous studies on the topic, we highlight that the main mechanism for extraordinary transmission is a TM-Fabry-Perot (FP) branch supported by waveguide modes inside each slit. The TM-FP br…
This paper has presented inversely determining the resonant configuration of the bilateral nanostructures for periodic metallic slits with extraordinary optical transmission performance. The topology optimization approach is utilized to implement the inverse design procedure. Several geometrical configurations of the bilateral nanostructures are derived for periodic metallic slits. The resonant performance of the derived nanostructures are demonstrated by the transmission spectra, where the transmission peak is presented at the specified wavelength in the inverse design procedure. This provide…
We provide rigorous numerical calculations (using the rigorous coupled-wave analysis) of transmission spectra of various metallic and metamaterial one-dimensional gratings and identify plasmonic resonances responsible for enhanced transmission. We argue that the most important mechanism which influences the resonant transmission is the coupling of incident electromagnetic wave with two plasmonic waves: lengthwise plasmons, which propagates along the grating, and crosswise plasmons excited in air gaps.
We report on a new class of mechanically tunable planar metamaterials comprising resonating units formed by crossed metallic strip gratings. We observe a resonant response in transmission spectra of a linearly polarized wave passing through the system of crossed gratings. Each grating consists of an array of parallel metallic strips located on the top of a dielectric substrate. It is revealed that the resonant position appears to be dependent on the angle of gratings crossing. It is found out both theoretically and experimentally that the resonant shift on the frequency scale appears as a resu…
We show that, a metasurface composed of subwavelength metallic slit array embedded in an asymmetric environment can exhibit either extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) or extraordinary optical diffraction (EOD). By employing an analytical model expansion method and the diffraction order chart in k-vector space, we found that the resonance decaying pathway of the local slit cavity mode can be tuned to either 0th or -1st diffraction order by changing the parallel wavevector, which gives rise to enhanced 0th transmission (EOT) of the structure for small incident angles, and enhanced -1st diff…
We demonstrate that plasmonic helical gratings consisting of metallic nanowires imprinted with helical grooves or ridges can be used efficiently to generate plasmonic vortices with radius much smaller than the operating wavelength. In our proposed approach, these helical surface gratings are designed so that plasmon modes with different azimuthal quantum numbers (topological charge) are phase-matched, thus allowing one to generate optical plasmonic vortices with arbitrary topological charge. The general principles for designing plasmonic helical gratings that facilitate efficient generation of…
The resonant transmission of two near-field coupled, cascaded band-pass filters, based on metallic stripe or patch gratings, is analysed. The response, in terms both of maximum efficiency and light rejection out of the resonance, overpasses the simple convolution of the responses of two isolated filters, while keeping good angular tolerance. Illustrations are given in the infrared range where sizing and technological integration of such compact structures are particularly relevant for detection applications.
Metallic gratings were fabricated using high energy laser interference lithography with a frequency tripled Nd:YAG nanosecond laser. The grating structures were first recorded in a photosensitive layer and afterwards transferred to an Au film. High quality Au gratings with a period of 770 nm and peak-to-valley heights of 20-60 nm exhibiting plasmonic resonance response were successfully designed, fabricated and characterized.
Metagrating is a new concept for wavefront manipulation that, unlike phase gradient metasurfaces, does not suffer from low efficiency and also has a less complicated fabrication process. In this paper, a compound metallic grating (a periodic structure with more than one slit in each period) is proposed for anomalous reflection. The electromagnetic response of this grating is analyzed by a proposed analytical method and then a closed-form and analytical expressions are presented for the reflection coefficients of the higher diffracted orders. The proposed method is verified by full-wave simulat…
We report the first experimental observation of trapped rainbow1 in graded metallic gratings2-4, designed to validate theoretical predictions for this new class of plasmonic structures. One-dimensional tapered gratings were fabricated and their surface dispersion properties tailored by varying the grating period and depth, whose dimensions were confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Reduced group velocities and the plasmonic bandgap were observed. Direct measurements on graded grating structures show that light of different wavelengths in the 500-700nm region is "trapped" at different positions…
We theoretically study the interactions between plasmonic and photonic modes within a structure that is composed of two thin corrugated metallic plates, embedded in air. We show that the interactions depend upon the symmetry of the interacting modes. This observation is explained by the phase difference between the Fourier components of the two gratings. The phase can be controlled by laterally shifting one grating with respect to the other. Therefore, this relative shift provides an efficient "knob" that allows to control the interaction between the various modes, resulting in an efficient mo…
Emerging technology based on artificial materials containing metallic structures has raised the prospect for unprecedented control of terahertz waves through components like filters, absorbers and polarizers. The functionality of these devices is static by the very nature of their metallic or polaritonic composition, although some degree of tunability can be achieved by incorporating electrically biased semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate a photonic structure by projecting the optical image of a metal mask onto a thin GaAs substrate using a femtosecond pulsed laser source. We show that the re…
Absorption of ultrashort laser pulses in a metallic grating deposited on a transparent sample launches coherent compression/dilatation acoustic pulses in directions of different orders of acoustic diffraction. Their propagation is detected by the delayed laser pulses, which are also diffracted by the metallic grating, through the measurement of the transient intensity change of the first order diffracted light. The obtained data contain multiple frequency components which are interpreted by considering all possible angles for the Brillouin scattering of light achieved through the multiplexing …
The perfect absorption of light in subwavelength thickness layers generally relies on exotic materials, metamaterials or thick metallic gratings. Here we demonstrate that total light absorption can be achieved in ultra-thin gratings composed of conventional materials, including relatively weakly-absorbing semiconductors, which are compatible with optoelectronic applications such as photodetectors and optical modulators. We fabricate a 41 nm thick antimony sulphide grating structure that has a measured absorptance of A = 99.3% at a visible wavelength of 591 nm, in excellent agreement with theor…
We describe a surface structure consisting of a metal-air interface where the metallic part consists of two metallic segments with a periodic modulation of the interface between them. Such a structure possesses a different transmissivity for a surface plasmon polariton incident on it from one side of it than it has for a surface plasmon polariton incident on it from the opposite side. This asymmetric transmission of a surface plasmon polariton is based on the suppression of the zero-order Bragg beam which, for a certain value of the modulation depth, is not transmitted through the structure, w…
We assert that the physics underlying the extraordinary light transmission (reflection) in nanostructured materials can be understood from rather general principles based on the formal scattering theory developed in quantum mechanics. The Maxwell equations in passive (dispersive and absorptive) linear media are written in the form of the Schrödinger equation to which the quantum mechanical resonant scattering theory (the Lippmann-Schwinger formalism) is applied. It is demonstrated that the existence of long-lived quasistationary eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian for the Maxwell theory n…
Spoof surface modes on nanostructured metallic surfaces are known to have tailorable dispersion dependent on the geometric characteristics of the periodic pattern. Here we examine the spoof plasmon dispersion on an isolated grating and a grating-planar mirror cavity configuration. The spoof polariton dispersion in the cavity is obtained using the scattering matrix approach, and the related differential modal density of states is introduced to obtain the mode dispersion and classify the cavity polariton modes. The grating-mirror cavity geometry is an example of periodically nanostructured metal…
We demonstrate the optical absorption has been enhanced in the small molecule organic solar cells by employing trapezoid grating structure. The enhanced absorption is mainly attributed to both waveguide modes and surface plasmon modes, which has been simulated by using finite-difference time-domain method. The simulated results show that the surface plasmon along the semitransparent metallic Ag anode is excited by introducing the periodical trapezoid gratings, which induce high intensity field increment in the donor layer. Meanwhile, the waveguide modes result a high intensity field in accepto…
In this paper, we employ an antireflective coating which comprises of inverted pi shaped metallic grooves to manipulate the behaviour of a TM-polarized plane wave transmitted through a periodic nanoslit array. At normal incidence, such scheme can not only retain the optical curtain effect in the output region, but also generate the extraordinary transmission of light through the nanoslits with the total transmission efficiency as high as 90%. Besides, we show that the spatially invariant field distribution in the output region as well as the field distribution of resonant modes around the inve…
We present a computational study of terahertz optical properties of a grating-coupled plasmonic structure based on micrometer-thin InSb layers. We find two strong absorption resonances that we interpret as standing surface plasmon modes and investigate their dispersion relations, dependence on InSb thickness, and the spatial distribution of the electric field. The observed surface plasmon modes are well described by a simple theory of the air/InSb/air trilayer. The plasmonic response of the grating/InSb structure is highly sensitive to the dielectric environment and the presence of an analyte …
Extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) is a phenomenon of exceptional light transmission through a metallic film with hole arrays enhanced by surface plasmon (SP) resonance, which stimulates renewed research hotspots in metamaterials, subwavelength optics, and plasmonics. Below the frequency of the first order SP mode, f_pl0, the metallic film typically shows strong reflection and no EOT. Here, we report an unusual EOT phenomenon below fpl0, i.e., beyond the long-held spectral boundary of classic EOTs. It is induced by a novel bound surface state in a Fabry-Perot(F-P) cavity comprising a hol…
This paper theoretically and experimentally presents a first report on broadband enhanced transmission through stacked metallic multi-layers perforated with coaxial annular apertures (CAAs). Different from previous studies on extraordinary transmission that occurs at a single frequency, the enhanced transmission of our system with two or three metallic layers can span a wide frequency range with a bandwidth about 60% of the central frequency. The phenomena arise from the excitation and hybridization of guided resonance modes in CAAs among different layers. Measured transmission spectra are in …
In this paper, we calculate the material specific absorption accurately using a modal method by determining the integral of the Poynting vector around the boundary of a specific material. Given that the accuracy of our method is only determined by the number of modes included, the material specific absorption can be used as a quality measure for the light-trapping performance. We use this method to investigate metallic gratings and find nearly degenerate plasmons at the interface between metal and amorphous silicon (a-Si). The plasmons cause large undesired absorption in the metal part of a gr…
Recent experiments have shown that spatial dispersion may have a conspicuous impact on the response of plasmonic structures. This suggests that in some cases the Drude model should be replaced by more advanced descriptions that take spatial dispersion into account, like the hydrodynamic model. Here we show that nonlocality in the metallic response affects surface plasmons propagating at the interface between a metal and a dielectric with high permittivity. As a direct consequence, any nanoparticle with a radius larger than 20 nm can be expected to be sensitive to spatial dispersion whatever it…
Recent numerical studies have demonstrated the possibility of achieving substantial enhancements in the transmission of transverse-electric-polarized electromagnetic fields through subwavelength slits in a thin metallic screen by placing single or paired metallic cut-wire arrays at a close distance from the screen. In this Letter, we report on the first experimental evidence of such extraordinary transmission phenomena, via microwave (X/Ku-band) measurements on printed-circuit-board prototypes. Experimental results agree very well with full-wave numerical predictions, and indicate an intrinsic…
Light propagation in a Bragg periodic structure containing thin films with metallic nanoparticles is studied. Plasmonic resonance frequency, Bragg frequency, and light carrier frequency are assumed to be close. Exact solutions describing solitary gap-waves are found, and a light arrest phenomenon due to nonlinearity of plasmonic oscillations is studied.
Metallic structures with periodic array of slits are well-known to lead to extraordinary power transmission, when slits have dimensions much less than the wavelength of incident optical wave. Excellent power transmission originates from surface waves excited by incident transverse magnetic wave. Here we show that metallic structure with array of stepped-slits can transmit power of incident wave into the substrate at desired optical frequency entirely and simultaneously in terahertz frequency band by 70%, for In0.53Ga0.47As substrate. Transmitted power of the proposed structure is studied both …
The modified rigorous coupled-wave analysis technique is developed to describe the optical characteristics of the plasmonic structures with the grating-gated delta-thin conductive channel in the far- and near-field zones of electromagnetic waves. The technique was applied for analysis of the resonant properties of AlGaN/GaN heterostructures combined with deeply-subwavelength metallic grating which facilitates the excitation of the two-dimensional plasmons in the THz frequency range. The convergence of the calculations at the frequencies near the plasmon resonances is discussed. The impact of t…
This work numerically investigates the radiative properties of film-coupled metamaterials made of a two-dimensional metallic concave grating on a continuous metal film separated by an ultrathin dielectric spacer. Spectrally-selective absorption is demonstrated in the visible and near-infrared regime, and underlying mechanisms are elucidated to be either localized magnetic polaritons (MPs) or surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The unique behaviors of MPs and SPPs are explained with the help of electromagnetic field distributions at respective resonance frequencies. An inductor-capacitor model i…
Nonlinear optical processes rely on the intrinsically weak interactions between photons enabled by their coupling with matter. Unfortunately, many applications in nonlinear optics are severely hindered by the small response of conventional materials. Metallic nanostructures partially alleviate this situation, as the large light enhancement associated with their localized plasmons amplifies their nonlinear response to record high levels. Graphene hosts long-lived, electrically tunable plasmons that also interact strongly with light. Here we show that the nonlinear polarizabilities of graphene n…
Graphene is a two-dimensional layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, whose outstanding properties makes it an excellent material for future electronic and photonic terahertz (THz) devices. In this work, we design hybrid graphene metasurfaces by using a monolayer graphene placed over a metallic grating, operating in the THz frequency range. Perfect absorption can be achieved at the resonance, where the electric field is greatly enhanced due to the coupling between the graphene and the grating plasmonic responses. The enhancement of the electric field along the graphene monolayer…
