An appealing mechanism for inducing multiferroicity in materials is the generation of electric polarization by a spatially varying magnetization that is coupled to the lattice through the spin-orbit interaction. Here we describe the reciprocal effect, in which a time-dependent electric polarization induces magnetization even in materials with no existing spin structure. We develop a formalism for this dynamical multiferroic effect in the case for which the polarization derives from optical phonons, and compute the strength of the phonon Zeeman effect, which is the solid-state equivalent of the well-established vibrational Zeeman effect in molecules, using density functional theory. We further show that a recently observed behavior -- the resonant excitation of a magnon by optically driven phonons -- is described by the formalism. Finally, we discuss examples of scenarios that are not driven by lattice dynamics and interpret the excitation of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-type electromagnons and the inverse Faraday effect from the viewpoint of dynamical multiferroicity.
Using density functional calculations we explore the properties of as-yet-unsynthesized $3d - 5d$ ordered double perovskites ($A_2BB'$O$_6$) with highly polarizable Bi$^{3+}$ ions on the $A$ site. We find that the Bi$_2$NiReO$_6$ and Bi$_2$MnReO$_6$ compounds are insulating and exhibit a robust net magnetization that persists above room temperature. When the in-plane lattice vectors of the pseudocubic unit cell are constrained to be orthogonal (for example, by coherent heteroepitaxy), the ground states are ferroelectric with large polarization and a very large uniaxial magnetocrystalline aniso…
Polycrystalline YMn1-xFexO3 (YMFO_x) (0 <= x <= 0.1) compounds have been prepared in single phase and characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy, magnetization, and dielectric measurements. Iron-substitution in hexagonal YMnO3 causes intra-lattice changes exceeding those of the lattice cell. XANES provide mixed-valence Mn3+/Mn4+ and Fe4+ charge states in these manganites, consistent with the observed decrease of the effective magnetic moment with Fe-doping. Magnetization M(T) evidence antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the specimens with little wea…
Based on measurements of soft x-ray magnetic scattering and symmetry considerations, we demonstrate that the magnetoelectric effect in TbMn$_2$O$_5$ arises from an internal field determined by $\vec{S}_{\vec{q}} \times {\vec{S}_{-\vec{q}}}$ with $\vec{S}_{\vec{q}}$ being the magnetization at modulation vector $\vec{q}$, whereas the magneto-elastic effect in the exchange energy governs the response to external electric fields. Our results set fundamental symmetry constraints on the microscopic mechanism of multiferroicity in frustrated magnets.
We report the observation of electric polarization in the magnetically ordered state of the Haldane chain compound, Gd$_2$BaNiO$_5$, with strongly correlated magnetic and dielectric properties. The results of dc magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements indicate two magnetic transitions, one corresponding to the anti-ferromagnetic order at T$_N$ around 55 K and the other to spin-reorientation transition at T$_{SR}$ around 24 K. The dielectric permittivity ($ε'$) and loss (tan$δ$) also exhibit anomalies in the vicinity of T$_{SR}$ and T$_N$ respectively. Below the spin-reorientation…
From the measurement of dielectric, ferroelectric, and magnetic properties we observe simultaneous ferroelectric and magnetic transitions around $\sim$600 K in orthorhombic LuFeO$_3$. We also observe suppression of the remanent polarization by $\sim$95\% under a magnetic field of $\sim$15 kOe at room temperature. The extent of suppression of the polarization under magnetic field increases monotonically with the field. These results show that even the orthorhombic LuFeO$_3$ is a room temperature multiferroic of type-II variety exhibiting quite a strong coupling between magnetization and polariz…
We report the magnetic and electric properties of Ba$_3$NiNb$_2$O$_9$, which is a quasi-two-dimensional spin-1 triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) with trigonal structure. At low $T$ and with increasing magnetic field, the system evolves from a 120 degree magnetic ordering phase (A phase) to an up-up-down ($uud$) phase (B phase) with a change of slope at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization, and then to an "oblique" phase (C phase). Accordingly, the ferroelectricity switches on at each phase boundary with appearance of spontaneous polarization. Therefore, Ba$_3$NiNb$_2$O$_9$ is a unique T…
We discuss the particle size driven tunability of the coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity in Pr0.67Ca0.33MnO3(PCMO) with the help of x ray diffraction, magnetization, impedance spectroscopy, and remanent polarization measurements. The remanent polarization measurements using the positive up negative down method clearly prove the existence of ferroelectricity in PCMO with phase separation between Zener polaron(ZP) ordered P21nm and disordered Pbnm structures. We also find that the ferroelectric response is enhanced in nanocrystalline samples so long as ZP ordering is not destroye…
LuFe2O4 exhibits multiferroicity due to charge order on a frustrated triangular lattice. We find that the magnetization of LuFe2O4 in the multiferroic state can be electrically controlled by applying voltage pulses. Depending on with or without magnetic fields, the magnetization can be electrically switched up or down. We have excluded thermal heating effect and attributed this electrical control of magnetization to an intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling in response to the electrical breakdown of charge ordering. Our findings open up a new route toward electrical control of magnetization.
We study magnetic and multiferroic behavior in Ca$_3$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$O$_6$ ($x \sim$0.97) by high-field measurements of magnetization ($M$), magnetostriction ($L$($H$)/$L$), electric polarization ($P$), and magnetocaloric effect. This study also gives insight into the zero and low magnetic field magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. We measured $M$ and $Δ$$L$/$L$ up to pulsed magnetic fields of 92 T, and determined the saturation moment and field. On the controversial topic of the spin states of Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions, we find evidence for $S$ = 3/2 spins for both…
Dynamical multiferroicity features entangled dynamic orders: fluctuating electric dipoles induce magnetization. Hence, the material with paraelectric fluctuations can develop magnetic signatures if dynamically driven. We identify the paraelectric KTaO$_3$ (KTO) as a prime candidate for the observation of the dynamical multiferroicity. We show that when a KTO sample is exposed to a circularly polarized laser pulse, the dynamically induced ionic magnetic moments are of the order of 5\% of the nuclear magneton per unit cell. We determine the phonon spectrum using ab initio methods and identify T$…
Symmetry often governs condensed matter physics. The act of breaking symmetry spontaneously leads to phase transitions, and various observables or observable physical phenomena can be directly associated with broken symmetries. Examples include ferroelectric polarization, ferromagnetic magnetization, optical activities (including Faraday and magneto-optic Kerr rotations), second harmonic generation, photogalvanic effects, nonreciprocity, various Hall-effect-type transport properties, and multiferroicity. Herein, we propose that observable physical phenomena can occur when specimen constituents…
Materials which possess coupling between different degrees of freedom such as charge, spin, orbital and lattice are of tremendous interest due to their potential for device applications. It has been recently realized that some of manganite perovskite oxides show structural and ferroelectric instabilities which may be tuned by imposing internal or external strain. Among manganite perovskites, AMnO3 (A = Ca, Sr and Ba) are reported to be good candidates to show spin-phonon coupling driven multiferroicity. Here, we have probed the correlation between vibrational and magnetic properties in the 9R-…
Ultrafast laser-induced magnetic switching in rare earth, transition metal ferrimagnetic alloys has recently been reported to occur by ultrafast heating alone. Using atomistic simulations and a ferrimagnetic Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch formalism, we demonstrate that for switching to occur it is necessary that angular momentum is transferred from the longitudinal to transverse magnetization components. This dynamical path leads to magnetization switching and subsequent ultrafast precession caused by the inter-sublattice exchange field on the nanoscale.
We utilize simulations of electron scattering by a chain of dynamical quantum spins, to analyze the interplay between the spin transfer effect and the magnetization dynamics. We show that the complex interactions between the spin-polarized electrons and the dynamical states of the local spins can be decomposed into separate processes involving electron reflection and transmission, as well as absorption and emission of magnons - the quanta of magnetization dynamics. Analysis shows that these processes are substantially constrained by the energy and momentum conversation laws, resulting in a sig…
The magnetization response of bulk ferromagnets after excitation by an ultrashort optical pulse is calculated using a dynamical model of the Elliott-Yafet type that includes the effects of the spin-orbit interaction in the ab-initio ferromagnetic band structure, the electron-phonon interaction at the level of Boltzmann scattering integrals, and dynamical changes in the temperature of the phonon bath. Using realistic parameters for the ultrashort optical pulse, the computed maximum magnetization quenching achievable with electron-phonon scattering in a fixed band structure is much smaller than …

Time-dependent rotational electric polarizations have been proposed to generate temporally varying magnetic moments, for example, through a combination of ferroelectric polarization and optical phonons. This phenomenon has been called dynamical multiferroicity, but explicit experimental demonstrations have been elusive to date. Here, we report the detection of a temporal magnetic moment as high as 1.2 mu_B/atom in charge-doped thin film of silicon under flexural strain. We demonstrate that the magnetic moment is generated by a combination of electric polarization arising from a flexoelectronic…
The spin transfer torque (STT) can lead to steady precession of magnetization without any external applied field in magnetic spin valve where the magnetic layer have very different spin diffusion length. This effect is associated with an unusual angular dependence of the STT, called "wavy" (WAD-STT), predicted in the frame of diffusive models of spin transfer. In this article, we present a complete experimental characterization of the magnetization dynamics in the presence of a WAD-STT. The results are compared to the prediction of the magnetization dynamics obtained by single domain magnetic …
We investigate the exchange bias and training effects in the FM/AF heterostructures using a unified Monte Carlo dynamical approach. This real dynamical method has been proved reliable and effective in simulating dynamical magnetization of nanoscale magnetic systems. The magnetization of the uncompensated AF layer is still open after the first field cycling is finished. Our simulated results show obvious shift of hysteresis loops (exchange bias) and cycling dependence of exchange bias (training effect) when the temperature is below 45 K. The exchange bias fields decrease with decreasing the coo…
We present dynamical properties of spin crossover compounds with photomagnetization, proposing a new model in which the spin-crossover phenomena and magnetic ordering are incorporated in a unified way. By using this model, the novel characteristics observed in Prussian blue analogs are qualitatively well reproduced. We investigate the time evolution of the magnetization and high spin fraction taking into account multi-time scales in a master equation approach for the magnetic relaxation, the lattice (electronic) relaxation, and the photoexcitation process. In particular, processes with differe…
We apply an analysis of time-dependent spin-polarized current in a semiconductor channel at room temperature to establish how the magnetization configuration and dynamics of three ferromagnetic terminals, two of them biased and third connected to a capacitor, affect the currents and voltages. In a steady state, the voltage on the capacitor is related to spin accumulation in the channel. When the magnetization of one of the terminals is rotated, a transient current is triggered. This effect can be used for electrical detection of magnetization reversal dynamics of an electrode or for dynamical …
We consider the general Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) dynamical theory underlying the magnetization switching rates of a thin film uniaxial magnet subject to spin-torque effects and thermal fluctuations (thermal noise). After discussing the various dynamical regimes governing the switching phenomena, we present analytical results for the mean switching time behavior. Our approach, based on explicitly solving the first passage time problem, allows for a straightforward analysis of the thermally assisted, low spin-torque, switching asymptotics of thin film magnets. To verify our theory, we have …
We consider a single spin in a constant magnetic field or an anisotropy field. We show that additional external time-periodic fields with zero mean may generate nonzero time-averaged spin components which are vanishing for the time-averaged Hamiltonian. The reason is a lowering of the dynamical symmetry of the system. A harmonic signal with proper orientation is enough to display the effect. We analyze the problem both with and without dissipation, both for quantum spins (s=1/2,1) and classical spins. The results are of importance for controlling the system's state using high or low frequency …
Dynamic response of spin accumulation to a time-dependent magnetic field has been investigated in a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic bilayer under ferromagnetic resonance. In this system, magnetization precession driven by a microwave generates direct-current (dc) and alternate-current (ac) spin accumulation in the nonmagnetic layer by the spin pumping. The ac spin accumulation is coupled with the microwave magnetic field through a dynamical Hanle spin precession, giving rise to rectified spin accumulation comparable with the dc spin accumulation directly generated by the spin pumping.
