Group G_{n}^{3} and imaginary generators

In the present paper, we construct a monomorphism from (Artin) pure braid group $PB_{n}$ into a group, which is `bigger' than $PB_{n}$. Roughly speaking, this mapping is defined on words of braids by adding `new generators' between generators of $PB_{n}$. By this mapping we can get a new invariant for classical braids. As one of application of this invariant, we will show examples, which are minimal words in $PB_{n}$ and the minimality can be shown by the invariant.

Generators for the Euclidean Picard Modular Groups

The goal of this article is to show that five explicitly given transformations, a rotation, two screw Heisenberg rotations, a vertical translation and an involution generate the Euclidean Picard modular groups with coefficient in the Euclidean ring of integers of a quadratic imaginary number field. We also obtain the relations of the isotropy subgroup by analysis of the combinatorics of the fundamental domain in Heisenberg group.

Generators for a complex hyperbolic braid group

We give generators for a certain complex hyperbolic braid group. That is, we remove a hyperplane arrangement from complex hyperbolic $13$-space, take the quotient of the remaining space by a discrete group, and find generators for the orbifold fundamental group of the quotient. These generators have the most natural form: loops corresponding to the hyperplanes which come nearest the basepoint. Our results support the conjecture that motivated this study, the "monstrous proposal", which posits a relationship between this braid group and the monster finite simple group.

Complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates with small imaginary parts

Kahn and Markovic \cite{KahnMark} proved that the fundamental group of each closed hyperbolic three manifold contains a closed surface subgroup. One of the main ingredients in their proof is a theorem which states that an assignment of nearly real, complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates to the cuffs of a pants decomposition of a closed surface $S$ induces a quasiFuchsian representation of the fundamental group of $S$. Generators for the mapping class group of a nonorientable surface

We show that Szepietowski's system of generators for the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface is a minimal generating set by Dehn twists and $Y$-homemorphisms.

Two-parabolic-generator subgroups of hyperbolic 3-manifold groups

We give a detailed account of Agol's theorem and his proof concerning two-meridional-generator subgroups of hyperbolic 2-bridge link groups, which is included in the slide of his talk at the Bolyai conference 2001. We also give a generalization of the theorem to two-parabolic-generator subgroups of hyperbolic 3-manifold groups, which gives a refinement of a result due to Boileau-Weidmann.

On the displacement of generators of free Fuchsian groups

We prove an inequality that must be satisfied by displacement of generators of free Fuchsian groups, which is the two-dimensional version of the $\log (2k-1)$ Theorem for Kleinian groups due to Anderson-Canary-Culler-Shalen. As applications, we obtain quantitative results on the geometry of hyperbolic surfaces such as the two-dimensional Margulis constant and lengths of closed curves, which improves a result of Buser's.

On Gehring-Martin-Tan groups with an elliptic generator

The Gehring-Martin-Tan inequality for 2-generator subgroups of PSL(2,C) is one of the best known discreteness conditions. A Kleinian group $G$ is called a Gehring-Martin-Tan group if the equality holds for the group $G$. We give a method for constructing Gehring-Martin-Tan groups with a generator of order four and present some examples. These groups arise as groups of finite volume hyperbolic 3-orbifolds.

Presentations of subgroups of the braid group generated by powers of band generators

According to the Tits conjecture proved by Crisp and Paris, [CP], the subgroups of the braid group generated by proper powers of the Artin elements are presented by the commutators of generators which are powers of commuting elements. Hence they are naturally presented as right-angled Artin groups. The case of subgroups generated by powers of the band generators is more involved. On the linearity of the holomorph group of a free group on two generators

Let F_n denote the free group generated by n letters. The purpose of this article is to show that Hol(F_2), the holomorph of the free group on two generators, is linear. Consequently, any split group extension of F_2 by a linear group H is linear. This result gives a large linear subgroup of Aut(F_3). A second application is that the mapping class group for genus one surfaces with two punctures is linear.

Two-generator subgroups of the pure braid group

We show that any two elements of the pure braid group either commute or generate a free group, settling a question of Luis Paris. Our proof involves the theory of 3-manifolds and the theory of group actions on trees.

Three-generator Artin groups of large type are biautomatic

In this article we construct a piecewise Euclidean, non-positively curved 2-complex for the 3-generator Artin groups of large type. As a consequence we show that these groups are biautomatic. A slight modification of the proof shows that many other Artin groups are also biautomatic. The general question (whether all Artin groups are biautomatic) remains open.

Small generators of cocompact arithmetic Fuchsian groups

In the study of Fuchsian groups, it is a nontrivial problem to determine a set of generators. Using a dynamical approach we construct for any cocompact arithmetic Fuchsian group a fundamental region in $\mathbf{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ from which we determine a set of small generators.
