In the light of the latest data by LHCf collaboration of the LHC on leading neutrons spectra it is possible to obtain total pion-proton cross-sections in the TeV energy region. In this work the exact extraction procedure is shown. Final numbers for the pion-proton cross-section are collected at several different values of the colliding energy and compared with some popular theoretical predictions. Errors of results are estimated.
An important experiment for cosmic ray physics is going to be conducted with the colliding proton beams of the CERN LHC. The equivalent energy of the 14 TeV center of mass energy of the colliding proton beams in the LHC is 1017eV in the laboratory frame. Two small electromagnetic calorimeters have been installed at zero degree collision angle +/-140m from the interaction point IP1. The calorimeters measure the energies and the positions of the axes of showers produced by forward neutral particles created in the proton-proton collisions. The shower calorimeters are therefore able to measure the…
The LHC will soon provide proton-proton collisions at the unprecedented center of mass energy, $\sqrt{s}=$14 TeV. This not only allows us to probe new regions of high-$p_T$ physics, but also low-$x$ and forward physics. A selection of potential measurements are described to outline the prospects for low-$x$ and forward physics in the ATLAS, CMS, TOTEM, and LHCf experiments.
Results of a new two-particle correlation analysis of central Pb+Au collision data at 158 GeV per nucleon are presented. The emphasis is put on pion-proton correlations and on the dependence of the two-pion correlation radii on the azimuthal emission angle with respect to the reaction plane.
We present a phenomenological analysis of the $q_{\mathrm{T}}$-weighted transverse spin dependent azimuthal asymmetry recently measured by the COMPASS Collaboration in polarized pion-proton Drell-Yan process. In the kinematical regimes explored by experiments, we consider the leading-twist contributions from the Boer-Mulders distribution functions $h_{1}^{\perp}(x,k_{\mathrm{T}}^{2})$ of both the pion and the proton, the transversity distribution $h_{1}(x,k_{\mathrm{T}}^{2})$ and the pretzelosity distribution $h_{1\mathrm{T}}^{\perp}(x,k_{\mathrm{T}}^{2})$ of the proton, with the unpolarized t…
To settle the question whether the growth with energy is universal for different hadronic total cross-sections, we present results from theoretical models for pion-proton, proton-proton and proton-antiproton total cross-sections. We show that present and planned experiments at LHC can differentiate between different models, all of which are consistent with presently available (lower energy) data. This study is also relevant for the analysis of those very high energy cosmic ray data which require reliable pion-proton total cross-sections as seeds. A preliminary study of the total pion-pion cros…
Small momentum transfer elastic pion-proton cross-section at high energies is calculated assuming the proton is composed of two constituents, a quark and a diquark. We find that it is possible to fit very precisely the data when (i) the pion acts as a single entity (no constituent quark structure) and (ii) the diquark is rather large, comparable to the size of the proton.
We use detailed balance for a hadron composed of quark and gluon Fock states to obtain parton distributions in the proton and pion on the basis of a simple statistical model.
The LHC energies are those at which the asymptotic regime in hadron-hadron diffractive collisions ($pp,πp,ππ$) might be switched on. Based on results of the Dakhno-Nikonov eikonal model which is a generalization of the Good-Walker eikonal approach for a continuous set of channels, we present a picture for transformation of the constituent quark mode to the black disk one. In the black disk mode ($\sqrt s \geq 10$ TeV) we have a growth of the logarithm squared type for total and elastic cross sections, $σ_{tot}\sim\ln^2s$ and $σ_{el}\sim\ln^2s$, and $(τ={\bf q}_\perp^2σ_{tot})$-scaling for diff…
A comparative theoretical study of the damages produced by protons and pions, in the energy range 50 MeV - 50 GeV, in diamond, is presented. The concentration of primary defects (CPD) induced by hadron irradiation is used to describe material degradation. The CPD has very different behaviours for protons and pions: the proton degradation is important at low energies and is higher than the pion one in the whole energy range investigated, with the exception of the Delta33 resonance region, where a large maximum of the degradation exists for pions. In comparison with silicon, the most investigate…
We present a study of inclusive direct-photon and neutral pion production in hadronic interactions that focuses on a comparison of the ratio of photon and pion yields with expectations from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (NLO pQCD).
The neutral pion electroproduction on the proton is considered in the framework phenomenological model based on the PCAC, current algebra with hard pions and chiral symmetry breaking interaction. The s- wave differential cross-section of the electroproduction of neutral pions off protons near the threshold is predicted as function photon momentum transfer squared $k^2$ . The s- wave multipoles $ReE_{0+}$ and $ReL_{0+}$ as function of the energy of the $π^0p$- system are given for the small $k^2$ and $% k^2=0.1(GeV/c)^2$. The results are compered with the experiment. It is shown the significant…
We study the effects of gluon saturation on pion production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions using the color glass condensate model. At high p_perp, we show that the p_perp-distribution of gluons behaves as ~ 1/(p_perp^7) in accordance with both conventional perturbative QCD calculations and experiment. Fragmentation of gluons into pions leads to a rapidity dependent depletion of pions relative to the conventional perturbative QCD predictions. We argue that these clear and systematic differences provide a signal for the onset of gluon saturation which is accessible in upcoming experime…
Charge-odd correlation of the charged pair components produced at electron-proton scattering can measure three current correlation averaged by proton state. In general these type correlation can be described by 14 structure functions. We restrict here by consideration of inclusive distributions of a pair components, which is the light-cone projection of the relevant hadronic tensor. Besides we consider the point-like approximation for proton and pion. Numerical estimations show that charge-odd effects can be measured in exclusive ep -> 2 pi X experiments.
Differences among calculations of the atmospheric neutrino beam can be traced in large part to differences in the representation of pion production by protons interacting with nuclei in the atmosphere. In this paper we review the existing data with the goal of determining the regions of phase space in which new measurements could help to improve the input to the calculations.
The process of two pion production in the electron-polarized proton scattering is investigated. In the Weizsäcker-Williams approximation the differential spectral distributions and the spin-momentum correlations are considered. The spin correlation effects caused by $ρ$-meson widths are estimated to be of an order of several per cent. Both channels of the $π^+π^-$ and $π^+π^0$ creation are considered. The effects of intermediate excited baryons are not considered. The spectral distributions on pion energy fractions in polarized and unpolarized cases are presented analytically and numerically.
Accurate knowledge of cross sections for pion production in proton-proton collisions finds wide application in particle physics, astrophysics, cosmic ray physics and space radiation problems, especially in situations where an incident proton is transported through some medium, and one requires knowledge of the output particle spectrum given the input spectrum. In such cases accurate parametrizations of the cross sections are desired. In this paper we review much of the experimental data and compare to a wide variety of different cross section parametrizations. In so doing, we provide parametri…
We present results for exclusive $p p \to p p π^+ π^-$ or $p \bar p \to p \bar p π^+ π^-$ processes at high energies. We discuss the role of new additional absorption corrections in the non-resonant Lebiedowicz-Szczurek model mediated by the pomeron and reggeon exchanges. We discuss also the role of the $ρ^{0}$ and the Drell-Söding photoproduction mechanism. We compare our predictions with recent experimental results obtained by the STAR and CDF Collaborations. We present predictions for the ALICE, ATLAS and CMS experiments. Differential distributions in invariant two-pion mass and two-dimensi…
We analysed the binomial multiplicity moments of the neutral pions, using an extension of the generating functional technique for detection losses. We applied this model-independent method to the individual gamma-weights of 10000 events of pi^{-}-proton interactions at 40 GeV/c. We compared the obtained results to those of 250 GeV/c. We used the FRITIOF and a shifted KW distribution to describe the data.
We use a two-component model to describe the production mechanism of D mesons in pi-p collisions. The model combines the usual QCD processes plus fragmentation and recombination of charm that has been produced by nonperturbative QCD mechanisms. A hard charm component in the pion must be responsible of the particle anti-particle production asymmetries observed.
We calculate the single spin asymmetry in the inclusive pion production in proton-proton collisions. We generate the asymmetry at the level of fragmentation function (Collins effect) by the Lund coloured string mechanism. We compare our results with the Fermilab E704 data from polarized proton-proton collisions at 200 GeV. We show that the transversely polarized quark densities at high Bjorken x strongly differ from these predicted by the SU(6) proton wave function.
It is studied the possibility of direct extraction of the transversity and its accompanying T-odd parton distribution function (PDF) from Drell-Yan (DY) processes with unpolarized pion beam and with both unpolarized and transversely polarized proton targets. At present, such a measurement can be performed on the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The preliminary estimations performed for COMPASS kinematic region demonstrate that it is quite real to extract both transversity and its accompanying T-odd PDF in the COMPASS conditions
We study the $bar{d} - \bar{u}$ asymmetry of the proton in a model approach in which hadronic fluctuations of the nucleon are generated through gluon splitting and recombination mechanisms. Within this framework, it is shown that the \ud asymmetry of the proton is consistently described by including only nucleon fluctuations to $|πN>$ and $|πΔ>$ bound states. Predictions of the model closely agree with the recent experimental data of the E866/NuSea Collaboration.
Single-spin asymmetry appears due to the interference of single and double gluon exchange between protons. A heavy fermion model is used to describe the jet production in the interaction of gluon with the proton implying the further averaging over its mass. As usually in one-spin correlations, the imaginary part of the double gluon exchange amplitude play the relevant role. The asymmetry in the inclusive set-up with the pion tagged in the fragmentation region of the polarized proton does not depend on the center of mass energy in the limits of its large values. The lowest order radiative corre…
We develop a Monte-Carlo event generator based on combination of a parton production formula including the effects of parton saturation (called the DHJ formula) and hadronization process due to the Lund string fragmentation model. This event generator is designed for the description of hadron productions at forward rapidities and in a wide transverse momentum range in high-energy proton-proton collisions. We analyze transverse momentum spectra of charged hadrons as well as identified particles; pion, kaon, (anti-)proton at RHIC energy, and ultra-forward neutral pion spectra from LHCf experimen…
Studying the instanton-induced contributions to various hard exclusive reactions provides physical insight into the transition from the non-perturbative to the perturbative regime of QCD. To this end, we study the leading-instanton contribution to the electro-magnetic and transition formfactors, using an effective theory of the Instanton Liquid Model. We report predictions for the space-like electro-magnetic formfactor of the pion, as well as recent results for the Dirac formfactor of the proton.
We consider the Sivers, Collins and transversity functions as extracted from SIDIS and e+e- experimental data and investigate to what extent they might explain the large Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA) observed in proton-proton inclusive processes. This phenomenological study is performed within the TMD factorization scheme. As the SIDIS data cover only a limited range of x values (x < 0.3), we allow for different large $x$ behaviours of the SIDIS Sivers functions and transversity distributions. We conclude that, within the available experimental constraints, one cannot observe any clear univers…
Exclusive diffractive bremsstrahlung of one and two photons at forward rapidities: Possibilities for experimental studies in $pp$ collisions at the LHC
We study the neutral pion photoproduction at near-threshold energies in fully covariant chiral perturbation theory up to O(p^3). When including only nucleonic virtual states in the model, the convergence is too slow. Therefore we test the model when introducing the Delta(1232) resonance as an additional degree of freedom. Some low-energy constants were fitted, converging to values in good agreement with those expected from literature.
We present a study of inclusive direct-photon and pion production in hadronic interactions, focusing on a comparison of the ratio of gamma/pi0 yields with expectations from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (NLO pQCD). We also examine the impact of a phenomenological model involving k_T smearing (which approximates effects of additional soft-gluon emission) on absolute predictions for photon and pion production and their ratio.
Recent measurements of the asymmetries between Feynman $x$ distributions of strange and antistrange hadrons in $π^- A$ interactions show a strong effect as a function of $x_F$. We calculate strange hadron production in the context of the intrinsic model and make predictions for particle/antiparticle asymmetries in these interactions.
Proton-proton differential and total cross sections provide information on the energy dependence of proton shape and size. We show that the deviation from exponential behavior of the diffraction cone observed near $t=-0.1$ GeV$^2$, (so-called break), both at the ISR and the LHC follows from the $t$-channel two-pion loop contributions, imposed by unitarity. By using a simple Regge-pole model, we extrapolate the "break" from the ISR energy region to that of the LHC. This allows us to answer two important questions: 1) To what extent is the "break" observed recently at the LHC a "recurrence" of t…
The neutral pion photoproduction on the proton near threshold has a very small scattering cross section when compared to the charged channels, which in ChPT is explained by strong cancellations between the lowest order pieces. Therefore it is very sensitive to higher-order corrections of chiral perturbation theory. We perform a fully covariant calculation up to chiral order p^3 and we investigate the effect of the inclusion of the Delta(1232) resonance as an explicit degree of freedom. We show that the convergence improves, leading to a much better agreement with data at a wide range of energi…
The contribution of the higher-twist mechanism to the large-$p_T$ inclusive gluon production cross section in $πp$ collisions is calculated in case of the principle of maximum conformality and Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie approaches in the dependence of the pion distribution amplitudes. The higher-twist cross sections obtained in the framework of the principle of maximum conformality and Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie approaches, and compared and analyzed in relation to the leading-twist cross sections and each other.
In this study, we have considered the contribution of the higher-twist (HT) effects of the subprocesses to inclusive pion pair production cross section in the high energy proton-antiproton collisions by using various pion distribution amplitudes (DAs) within the frozen coupling constant approach and compared them with the leading-twist contributions. The feature of the HT effects may help the theoretical interpretation of the future PANDA experiment. The dependencies of the HT contribution on the transverse momentum $p_T$, the center of mass energy $\sqrt s$, and the variable $x_T$ are discuss…
We estimate the cross section for quasi-elastic double pion exchange in high energy proton-proton collisions. Total and elastic $ππ$ cross sections are calculated in an equivalent pion approximation, with pion-baryon vertices taken from chiral perturbation theory.
Recently the concept of the pion cloud in the nucleon turned out to be successful in understanding the Gottfried sum rule violation observed by the New Muon Collaboration and the Drell--Yan asymmetry measured in NA51 at CERN. We propose a further possibility to test this concept at HERA through the analysis of the structure of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events induced by pion--exchange. Momentum and energy distributions of outgoing nucleons as well as rapidity and multiplicity distributions are investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. Most observables cannot distinguish this process fr…
We propose an scenario to study, from a dynamical point of view, the thermal recombination of quarks in the midsts of a relativistic heavy-ion collision. We coin the term dynamical quark recombination to refer to the process of quark-antiquark and three-quark clustering, to form mesons and baryons, respectively, as a function of energy density. Using the string-flip model we show that the probabilities to form such clusters differ. We apply these ideas to the calculation of the proton and pion spectra in a Bjorken-like scenario that incorporates the evolution of these probabilities with proper…
The pion multiplicity distribution is widely believed to reflect the statistical aspects of $\bar{p}p$ annihilation at rest. We try to reproduce it in a grand canonical picture with explicit conservation of electric charge, isospin, total angular momentum, and the parity quantum numbers $P$, $C$, and $G$ via the projection operator formalism. Bose statistics is found to be non-negligible, particularly in fixing the interaction volume. The calculated pion multiplicity distribution for $\left\langle n_π \right\rangle = 5$ turns out to depend strongly on the conservation of the angular momentum a…
We present a study of the exclusive production of meson pairs in the four-body $pp \to pp π^{+} π^{-}$, $pp K^{+}K^{-}$ reactions at high energies which constitute an irreducible background to resonance states (e.g. $ϕ$, $f_{2}(1270)$, $f_{0}(1500)$, $f_{2}'(1525)$, $χ_{c0}$). We consider central diffractive contribution mediated by Pomeron and Reggeon exchanges and new diffractive mechanism of emission of pions/kaons from the proton lines. We include absorption effects due to proton-proton interaction and pion/kaon rescattering. Predictions for the total cross section and differential distrib…
We present an analysis of data on single inclusive pion production measured by the LHCf collaboration in high-energy proton-proton and proton-nucleus at ultra-forward rapidities, $8.8 \leq\! y\leq \!10.8$. We also analyse forward RHIC data for calibration purposes. Our analysis relies on the use of a Monte Carlo event generator that combines a perturbative description of the elementary scattering process at partonic level based on the hybrid formalism of the Color Glass Condensate with an implementation of hadronization in the framework of the Lund string fragmentation model. This procedure al…
We present calculations of the two-pion-exchange contribution to proton-proton scattering at 90 degrees using form factors appropriate for representing the distribution of the constituent partons of the nucleon. Talk given at MENU2001, George Washington University, July 26-31, 2001
I critically review the status of computations of threshold pion production in proton-proton collisions in the framework of effective field theory approaches or variants thereof. I also present the results of a novel diagrammatic scheme.
We compare the predictions of AAfrag for the spectra of secondary photons, neutrinos, electrons, and positrons produced in proton-proton collisions to those of the parameterisations of Kamae et al., Kelner et al., and Kafexhiu et al. We find that the differences in the normalisation of the photon energy spectra reach 20$-$50% at intermediate values of the transferred energy fraction $x$, growing up to a factor of two for $x\rightarrow\,$1, while the differences in the neutrino spectra are even larger. We argue that LHCf results on the forward production of photons favor the use of the QGSJET-I…
A simple model based on relativistic geometry and final-state hadronic rescattering is used to predict pion source parameters extracted in two-pion correlation studies of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s}=14 TeV. By comparing the results of these model studies with data, it might be possible to obtain information on the hadronization time in these collisions. As a test of this model, comparisons between existing two-pion correlation data at sqrt{s}= 1.8 TeV and results from the model are made. It is found at this lower energy that using a short hadronization time in the model best describes …
We derive a closed, model independent, expression for the electromagnetic correction factor to a phenomenological hadronic scattering length extracted from a hydrogenic atom. It is obtained in a non-relativistic approach and in the limit of a short ranged hadronic interaction to terms of order ((alpha)**2)(log(alpha)) using an extended charge distribution. A hadronic negatively charged pion-proton scattering length of 0.0870(5), in units of inverse charged pion-mass, is deduced, leading to a pion-nucleon coupling constant from the GMO relation equals to 14.04(17).
A set of new, precise data have recently been made available by the NA49 collaboration for charged pion production in proton-proton and proton-Carbon reactions at 158 GeV. The current paper compares this new data to five currently available arithmetic parameterizations. Although a precise fit is not expected, two of the parameterizations do not work very well but the other three are able to provide a moderately good, but not precise fit to the proton-proton data. The best two of these three parameterizations are scaled to the proton-Carbon data and again provide a moderately good, but not prec…
We report on a detailed investigation of four-body $p p \to p p π^+ π^-$ and $p \bar{p} \to p \bar{p} π^+ π^-$) reactions which constitute an irreducible background to three-body processes $p p \to p p M$, where $M$ is a broad resonance in the $π^+ π^-$ channel, e.g. $M=σ, ρ^{0}, f_{0}(980), f_{2}(1275), f_{0}(1500)$. We include double-diffractive contribution (both pomeron and reggeon exchanges) as well as the pion-pion rescattering contributions. The first process dominates at higher energies and small pion-pion invariant masses while the second becomes important at lower energies and higher…
We present new sets of pion, kaon, proton and inclusive charged hadron fragmentation functions obtained in NLO combined analyses of single-inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation, proton-proton collisions, and deep-inelastic lepton-proton scattering with either particles identified in the final state. At variance with all previous fits, the present analyses take into account data where hadrons of different electrical charge are identified, which allow to discriminate quark from anti-quark fragmentation functions.
The pion cloud is important in nuclear physics and in a variety of low-energy hadronic phenomena. We argue that it is natural to expect it to also be important in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan studies of proton structure. We compute the necessary consequences of the pion cloud in connection with the recent SeaQuest data. The effects are detailed by using the exact kinematics of the experiment. Good agreement with the measurements is obtained. Thus the universality of pionic effects is understood.
Pions and protons production cross-sections are analyzed in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at the RHIC energy at midrapidity. We employ the pQCD factorization scheme supplemented with the color-dipole formalism to investigate the Cronin effect. We calculate the broadening in the color-dipole approach for different centralities. Our main goal is to investigate, in a parameter-free manner within a unified framework, how much of the cronin effect for both pions and baryons comes from the transverse momentum broadening due to initial partons multi-scatterings. We conclude that final-s…
In this paper, we investigate the influence of coherent pion emission on long-range azimuthal correlations in relativistic proton-proton collisions. We study the pion momentum distribution for a coherent source with both transverse and Bjorken longitudinal expansions, and calculate the two-particle correlation function $C(Δη,Δϕ)$. A "ridge" structure is observed in the correlation function $C(Δη,Δϕ)$ of the coherent pion emission, whether the coherent source is expanding or static. The onset of this long-range azimuthal correlation can be traced back to the asymmetric initial transverse profil…
We compare calculations for the production of charged pions by pion or proton beams off nuclei calculated within our coupled channel transport model (GiBUU) with recent data of the HARP collaboration for beam energies from 3 up to 13 GeV. Predictions for the 30 GeV data for pions and kaons from the NA61/SHINE experiment are included.
Present availability of high brilliance photon beams as those produced by X-ray Free Electron Lasers in combination with intense TeV proton beams typical of the Large Hadron Collider makes it possible to conceive the generation of pion beams via photo-production in a highly relativistic Lorentz boosted frame: the main advantage is the low emittance attainable and a TeV-class energy for the generated pions, that may be an interesting option for the production of low emittance muon and neutrino beams. We will describe the kinematics of the two classes of dominant events, i.e. the pion photo-prod…
The contribution of the box and crossed two-pion-exchange diagrams to proton-proton scattering at 90$^{\circ}_{c.m.}$ is calculated in the laboratory momentum range up to 12 GeV/c. Relativistic form factors related to the nucleon and pion size and representing the pion source distribution based on the quark structure of the hadronic core are included at each vertex of the pion-nucleon interaction. These form factors depend on the four-momenta of the exchanged pions and scattering nucleons. Feynman-diagram amplitudes calculated without form factors are checked against those derived from dispers…
The production of charged pion pairs via multiphoton absorption from an intense X-ray laser wave colliding with an ultrarelativistic proton beam is studied. Our calculations include the contributions from both the electromagnetic and hadronic interactions where the latter are described approximately by a phenomenological Yukawa potential. Order-of-magnitude estimates for $π^+π^-$ production on the proton by two- and three-photon absorption from the high-frequency laser field are obtained and compared with the corresponding rates for $μ^+μ^-$ pair creation.
Inclusive cross sections for pion production in proton-proton collisions are calculated for the first time based on unintegrated parton (gluon, quark, antiquark) distributions (uPDF). We use Kwieciński uPDF's and phenomenological fragmentation functions from the literature. In addition to the $gg \to g$ diagram used recently for applications at RHIC we include also $g q \to q$ and $q g \to q$ diagrams. We find that the new contributions are comparable to the purely gluonic one at midrapidities and dominate in the fragmentation region. The new mechanisms are responsible for $π^+ - π^-$ asymmetr…
We investigate pion photoproduction off the proton in a manifestly gauge-invariant chiral unitary extension of chiral perturbation theory. In a first step, we consider meson-baryon scattering taking into account all next-to-leading order contact interactions. The resulting low-energy constants are determined by a fit to s-wave pion-nucleon scattering and the low-energy data for the reaction pi- p --> eta n. To assess the theoretical uncertainty, we perform two different fit strategies. Having determined the low-energy constants, we then analyse the data on the s-wave multipole amplitudes E0+ o…
