We present a real-time lattice approach to study the non-equilibrium dynamics of vector and axial charges in $SU(N) \times U(1)$ gauge theories. Based on a classical description of the non-Abelian and Abelian gauge fields, we include dynamical fermions and develop operator definitions for (improved) Wilson and overlap fermions that allow us to study real-time manifestations of the axial anomaly from first principles. We present a first application of this approach to anomalous transport phenomena such as the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) and Chiral Separation Effect (CSE) by studying the dynamics of fermions during and after a $SU(N)$ sphaleron transition in the presence of a $U(1)$ magnetic field. We investigate the fermion mass and magnetic field dependence of the suggested signatures of the CME and CSE and point out some important aspects which need to be accounted for in the macroscopic description of anomalous transport phenomena.
We present recent results from lattice simulations of 2+1 flavors of improved staggered fermions at zero baryon number density near the high temperature crossover. Included are new results from simulations of asqtad fermions at Nt = 12 and a nearly physical Goldstone pion mass and from simulations of HISQ fermions at Nt = 6 and 8. We focus on observables sensitive to chiral symmetry and confinement. A companion HotQCD talk discusses the effects of staggered-fermion taste-symmetry breaking on thermodynamic quantities.
We present a Pisarski-Wilczek stability analysis of SU(4) gauge theory coupled simultaneously to fermions charged under the fundamental and two-index antisymmetric representations of the gauge group. We carry out the calculation to one loop in the $ε$ expansion, assuming that the two species of fermion undergo a simultaneous chiral transition. The results indicate that the chiral transition is first order.
The subject of these summer school lectures are (i) Chiral symmetry; (ii) Anomalies; (iii) Domain wall fermions; (iv) Overlap fermions and the Ginsparg-Wilson equation
We present a workable model for the fermion-photon vertex, which is expressed solely in terms of functions that appear in the fermion propagator and independent of the angle between the relative momenta, and does not explicitly depend on the covariant-gauge parameter. It nevertheless produces a critical coupling for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking that is practically independent of the covariant-gauge parameter and an anomalous magnetic moment distribution for the dressed fermion that agrees in important respects with realistic numerical solutions of the inhomogeneous vector Bethe-Salpeter …
Following the recent work by Braguta et al., we perform an indirect calculation of the chiral vortical conductivity with free lattice overlap fermions by measuring the response of the energy flow to the constant axial magnetic field. We find that the measurements are contaminated by very large finite-volume artifacts. However, the continuum result for finite-temperature contribution to the chiral vortical conductivity (T^2/12) is still reproduced in the limit of infinite volume at fixed temperature.
It is shown numerically, in a chiral U(1) gauge Higgs theory in which the left and right-handed fermion components have opposite U(1) charges, that the spectrum of gauge and Higgs fields surrounding a static fermion contains both a ground state and at least one stable excited state. To bypass the difficulties associated with dynamical fermions in a lattice chiral gauge theory we consider only static fermion sources in a quenched approximation, at fixed lattice spacing and couplings, and with a lattice action along the lines suggested long ago by Smit and Swift.
We study chiral properties of eigenvalue spectrum for staggered quarks. We present a new method to identify would-be zero modes and nonzero modes using their symmetry and chiral properties. Here, we review the traditional method with HYP improved staggered quarks, and extend it to a completely new method which uses the chiral Ward identities and leakage patterns to achieve the goal.
A new formulation of chiral fermions on the lattice is presented. It is a version of overlap fermions, but built from the computationally efficient staggered fermions rather than the previously used Wilson fermions. The construction reduces the four quark flavors described by the staggered fermion to two quark flavors; this pair can be taken as the up and down quarks in Lattice QCD. The exact flavored chiral symmetry of the staggered fermion gets converted into an unflavored Ginsparg-Wilson chiral symmetry of the new overlap fermion, which also has pairs of exact chiral zero-modes satisfying t…
It is shown that the IIB matrix model compactified on a six-dimensional torus with a nontrivial topology can provide chiral fermions and matter content close to the standard model on our four-dimensional spacetime. In particular, generation number three is given by the Dirac index on the torus.
We discuss how chiral fermions can appear in the type IIB matrix model, which is considered to be a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In particular, we are concerned with a constructive definition of the theory, in which we start with a finite-N configuration and take the large-N limit later on. We point out that there exists a certain necessary condition which the structure of the extra dimensions should satisfy. As an example, we consider a previous proposal using intersecting branes and show that chiral fermions can indeed be realized in four dimensions by introducing a mat…
We show that the 3450 U(1) chiral fermion theory can appear as the low energy effective field theory of a 1+1D local lattice model, with an on-site U(1) symmetry and finite-range interactions. The on-site U(1) symmetry means that the U(1) symmetry can be gauged (gaugeable for both background probe and dynamical fields), which leads to a non-perturbative definition of chiral gauge theory --- a chiral fermion theory coupled to U(1) gauge theory. Our construction can be generalized to regularize any U(1)-anomaly-free 1+1D gauged chiral fermion theory with a zero chiral central charge (thus no gra…
Lattice regularization of chiral fermions has been a long-standing problem in physics. In this work, we present the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulation of the 3-4-5-0 model of (1+1)D chiral fermions with an anomaly-free chiral U(1) symmetry, which contains two left-moving and two right-moving fermions carrying U(1) charges 3,4 and 5,0, respectively. Following the Wang-Wen chiral fermion model, we realize the chiral fermions and their mirror partners on the opposite boundaries of a thin strip of (2+1)D lattice model of multi-layer Chern insulator, whose finite-width implies t…
