We consider ground states of quantum spin chains with symmetry-protected topological (SPT) order as resources for measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC). We show that, for a wide range of SPT phases, the computational power of ground states is uniform throughout each phase. This computational power, defined as the Lie group of executable gates in MBQC, is determined by the same algebraic information that labels the SPT phase itself. We prove that these Lie groups always contain a full set of single-qubit gates, thereby affirming the long-standing conjecture that general SPT phases can serve as computationally useful phases of matter.
We consider spin chain families inspired by the Su, Schrieffer and Hegger (SSH) model. We demonstrate explicitly the topologically induced spatial localisation of quantum states in our systems. We present detailed investigations of the effects of random noise, showing that these topologically protected states are very robust against this type of perturbation. Systems with such topological robustness are clearly good candidates for quantum information tasks and we discuss some potential applications. Thus, we present interesting spin chain models which show promising applications for quantum de…
Discrete-time quantum walks allow Floquet topological insulator materials to be explored using controllable systems such as ultracold atoms in optical lattices. By numerical simulations, we study the robustness of topologically protected edge states in the presence of decoherence in one- and two-dimensional discrete-time quantum walks. We also develop a simple analytical model quantifying the robustness of these edge states against either spin or spatial dephasing, predicting an exponential decay of the population of topologically protected edge states. Moreover, we present an experimental pro…
Edge theories of symmetry-protected topological phases are well-known to possess global symmetry anomalies. In this work we focus on two-dimensional bosonic phases protected by an on-site symmetry and analyse the corresponding edge anomalies in more detail. Physical interpretations of the anomaly in terms of an obstruction to orbifolding and constructing symmetry-preserving boundaries are connected to the cohomology classification of symmetry-protected phases in two dimensions. Using the tensor network and matrix product state formalism we numerically illustrate our arguments and discuss compu…
Topological insulators in free fermion systems have been well characterized and classified. However, it is not clear in strongly interacting boson or fermion systems what symmetry protected topological orders exist. In this paper, we present a model in a 2D interacting spin system with nontrivial on-site $Z_2$ symmetry protected topological order. The order is nontrivial because we can prove that the 1D system on the boundary must be gapless if the symmetry is not broken, which generalizes the gaplessness of Wess-Zumino-Witten model for Lie symmetry groups to any discrete symmetry groups. The …
We extend the topological quantum computation scheme using the Pfaffian quantum Hall state, which has been recently proposed by Das Sarma et al., in a way that might potentially allow for the topologically protected construction of a universal set of quantum gates. We construct, for the first time, a topologically protected Controlled-NOT gate which is entirely based on quasihole braidings of Pfaffian qubits. All single-qubit gates, except for the pi/8 gate, are also explicitly implemented by quasihole braidings. Instead of the pi/8 gate we try to construct a topologically protected Toffoli ga…
We use low-depth quantum circuits, a specific type of tensor networks, to classify two-dimensional symmetry-protected topological many-body localized phases. For (anti-)unitary on-site symmetries we show that the (generalized) third cohomology class of the symmetry group is a topological invariant; however our approach leaves room for the existence of additional topological indices. We argue that our classification applies to quasi-periodic systems in two dimensions and systems with true random disorder within times which scale superexponentially with the inverse interaction strength. Our tech…
Symmetry protected topological phases (SPTs) have universal degeneracies in the entanglement spectrum in one dimension (1D). Here, we formulate this phenomenon in the framework of symmetry-resolved entanglement (SRE) using cohomology theory. We develop a general approach to compute entanglement measures of SPTs in any dimension and specifically SRE via a discrete path integral on multi-sheet Riemann surfaces with generalized defects. The resulting path integral is expressed in terms of group cocycles describing the topological actions of SPTs. Their cohomology classification allows to identify…
Exceptional point (EP) associated with eigenstates coalescence in non-Hermitian systems has many exotic features. The EPs are generally sensitive to system parameters, here we report symmetry protected isolated EPs in the Brillouin zone (BZ) of a two-dimensional non-Hermitian bilayer square lattice; protected by symmetry, the isolated EPs only move, merge, and split in the BZ. The average values of Pauli matrices under the eigenstate of system Bloch Hamiltonian define a real planar vector field, the topological defects of which are isolated EPs associated with vortices. The winding number char…
One-dimensional valence bond solid (VBS) states represent the simplest symmetry protected topological phases. We show that their ground state entanglement spectrum contains both topological and non-topological structures. For the $SO(3)$ symmetric VBS states with odd-integer spins, the two-fold topological degeneracy is associated with an underlying $Z_{2}\times Z_{2}$ symmetry that protects the corresponding topological phase. In general, for the $SO(2S+1)$ symmetric VBS states with integer spins $S$, the corresponding protecting symmetry is identified as the $(Z_{2}\times Z_{2})^{S}$ symmetr…
The realization of robust strong coupling and entanglement between distant quantum emitters (QEs) is very important for scalable quantum information processes. However, it is hard to achieve it based on conventional systems. Here, we propose theoretically and demonstrate numerically a scheme to realize such strong coupling and entanglement. Our scheme is based on the photonic crystal platform with topologically protected edge state and zero-dimensional topological corner cavities. When the QEs are put into topological cavities, the strong coupling between them can be fulfilled with the assista…
Measurement-based quantum computation is a model for quantum information processing utilizing local measurements on suitably entangled resource states for the implementation of quantum gates. A complete characterization for universal resource states is still missing. It has been shown that symmetry-protected topological order in one dimension can be exploited for the protection of certain quantum gates in measurement-based quantum computation. In this paper we show that the two-dimensional plaquette states on arbitrary lattices exhibit nontrivial symmetry-protected topological order in terms o…
Gutzwiller projection is a way to construct many-body wave functions that could carry topological order or symmetry protected topological (SPT) order. However, an important issue is to determine whether or not a given Gutzwiller-projected wave functions (GWF) carries a non-trivial SPT order, and which SPT order is carried by the wavefunction. In this paper, we numerically study the SPT order in a spin $S = 1$ GWF on the Kagome lattice. Using the standard Monte Carlo method, we directly confirm that the GWF has (1) gapped bulk with short-range correlations, (2) a trivial topological order via n…
The realization of robust coherent energy transfer with a long range from a donor to an acceptor has many important applications in the field of quantum optics. However, it is hard to be realized using conventional schemes. Here, we demonstrate theoretically that the robust energy transfer can be achieved using a photonic crystal platform, which includes the topologically protected edge state and zero-dimensional topological corner cavities. When the donor and the acceptor are put into a pair of separated topological cavities, respectively, the energy transfer between them can be fulfilled wit…
We study symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases of matter in 2D protected by symmetries acting on fractal subsystems of a certain type. Despite the total symmetry group of such systems being subextensively large, we show that only a small number of phases are actually realizable by local Hamiltonians. Which phases are possible depends crucially on the spatial structure of the symmetries, and we show that in many cases no non-trivial SPT phases are possible at all. In cases where non-trivial SPT phases do exist, we give an exhaustive enumeration of them in terms of their locality.
We prove that all eigenstates of many-body localized symmetry protected topological systems with time reversal symmetry have four-fold degenerate entanglement spectra in the thermodynamic limit. To that end, we employ unitary quantum circuits where the number of sites the gates act on grows linearly with the system size. We find that the corresponding matrix product operator representation has similar local symmetries as matrix product ground states of symmetry protected topological phases. Those local symmetries give rise to a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological index, which is robust against arbitrar…
Exploring the properties and applications of topological quantum states is essential to better understand topological matter. Here, we theoretically study a quasi-one-dimensional topological atom array. In the low-energy regime, the atom array is equivalent to a topological superatom. Driving the superatom in a cavity, we study the interaction between light and topological quantum states. We find that the edge states exhibit topology-protected quantum coherence, which can be characterized from the photon transmission. This quantum coherence helps us to find a superradiance-subradiance transiti…
We present systematic constructions of tensor-network wavefunctions for bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases respecting both onsite and spatial symmetries. From the classification point of view, our results show that in spatial dimensions $d=1,2,3$, the cohomological bosonic SPT phases protected by a general symmetry group $SG$ involving onsite and spatial symmetries are classified by the cohomology group $H^{d+1}(SG,U(1))$, in which both the time-reversal symmetry and mirror reflection symmetries should be treated as anti-unitary operations. In addition, for every SPT phase pro…
We discuss the symmetry-protected topological (SPT) orders for bosonic systems from an information-theoretic viewpoint. We show that with a proper choice of the onsite basis, the degenerate ground-state space of SPT orders (on a manifold with boundary) is a quantum error-correcting code with macroscopic classical distance, hence is stable against any local bit-flip errors. We show that this error-correcting property of the SPT orders has a natural connection to that of the symmetry-breaking orders, whose degenerate ground-state space is a classical error-correcting code with a macroscopic dist…
Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are topologically characterized in quantum quench dynamics in topological systems. In this paper, we study Loschmidt amplitudes and DQPTs in quantum quenches in mirror-symmetric topological phases. Based on the topological classification of mirror-symmetric insulators, we show that mirror symmetry creates symmetry-protected DQPTs. If mirror symmetry is present, topologically robust DQPTs can occur in quantum quenches, even in high-dimensional time-reversal invariant systems. Then, we also show that symmetry-protected DQPTs occur in quenches in two-di…
Topological effects continue to fascinate physicists since more than three decades. One of their main applications are high-precision measurements of the resistivity. We propose to make also use of the spatially separated edge states. It is possible to realize strongly direction-dependent group velocities. They can also be tuned over orders of magnitude so that robust delay lines and interference devices are within reach.
The topic of photonic topological insulators and scattering-protected edge states bridges concepts from condensed matter physics and electromagnetics, and necessitates understanding the Berry potential and related concepts. These notes are an attempt at a moderately self-contained introduction to the topic, including two detailed photonic examples drawn from the literature. We made these notes in the process of trying to understand this topic ourselves, and we are posting this material in the spirit of helping other researchers start to understand this material. We claim no novelty in the mate…
Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases exhibit nontrivial order if symmetry is respected but are adiabatically connected to the trivial product phase if symmetry is not respected. However, unlike the symmetry-breaking phase, there is no local order parameter for SPT phases. Here we employ a tensor-network method to compute the topological invariants characterized by the simulated modular $S$ and $T$ matrices to study transitions in a few families of two-dimensional (2D) wavefunctions which are $\mathbb{Z}_N$ ($N=2\, \&3$) symmetric. We find that in addition to the topologically ordered ph…
We show how to realize quantum state transfer between distant qubits using the chiral edge states of a two-dimensional topological spin system. Our implementation based on Rydberg atoms allows to realize the quantum state transfer protocol in state of the art experimental setups. In particular, we show how to adapt the standard state transfer protocol to make it robust against dispersive and disorder effects.
Measurement-based quantum computation describes a scheme where entanglement of resource states is utilized to simulate arbitrary quantum gates via local measurements. Recent works suggest that symmetry-protected topologically non-trivial, short-ranged entanged states are promising candidates for such a resource. Miller and Miyake [NPJ Quantum Information 2, 16036 (2016)] recently constructed a particular $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry-protected topological state on the Union-Jack lattice and established its quantum computational universality. However, they sugg…
Entangled multiphoton states lie at the heart of quantum information, computing, and communications. In recent years, topology has risen as a new avenue to robustly transport quantum states in the presence of fabrication defects, disorder and other noise sources. Whereas topological protection of single photons and correlated photons has been recently demonstrated experimentally, the observation of topologically protected entangled states has thus far remained elusive. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the topological protection of spatially-entangled biphoton states. We observe robustness i…
Symmetry fractionalization, generating a large amount of symmetry-protected topological phases, provides scenarios for continuous phase transitions different from spontaneous symmetry breaking. However, it is hard to detect these symmetry-protected topological phase transitions experimentally. Motivated by the recent development of highly tunable ultracold polar molecules, we show that the setup in a zigzag optical lattice of this system provides a perfect platform to realize symmetry-protected topological phase transitions. By using infinite time-evolving block decimation, we obtain the phase…
Identifying topological properties is a major challenge because, by definition, topological states do not have a local order parameter. While a generic solution to this challenge is not available yet, a broad class of topological states, namely symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states, can be identified by distinctive degeneracies in their entanglement spectrum. Here, we propose and realize two complementary protocols to probe these degeneracies based on, respectively, symmetry-resolved entanglement entropies and measurement-based computational algorithms. The two protocols link quantum inf…
Topology plays a central role in ensuring the robustness of a wide variety of physical phenomena. Notable examples range from the robust current carrying edge states associated with the quantum Hall and the quantum spin Hall effects to proposals involving topologically protected quantum memory and quantum logic operations. Here, we propose and analyze a topologically protected channel for the transfer of quantum states between remote quantum nodes. In our approach, state transfer is mediated by the edge mode of a chiral spin liquid. We demonstrate that the proposed method is intrinsically robu…
We systematically investigate the robustness of symmetry protected topological (SPT) order in open quantum systems by studying the evolution of string order parameters and other probes under noisy channels. We find that one-dimensional SPT order is robust against noisy couplings to the environment that satisfy a strong symmetry condition, while it is destabilized by noise that satisfies only a weak symmetry condition, which generalizes the notion of symmetry for closed systems. We also discuss "transmutation" of SPT phases into other SPT phases of equal or lesser complexity, under noisy channe…
We have applied the recently developed theory of topological Uhlmann numbers to a representative model of a topological insulator in two dimensions, the Qi-Wu-Zhang model. We have found a stable symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase under external thermal fluctuations in two-dimensions. A complete phase diagram for this model is computed as a function of temperature and coupling constants in the original Hamiltonian. It shows the appearance of large stable phases of matter with topological properties compatible with thermal fluctuations or external noise and the existence of critical line…
Entanglement properties are routinely used to characterize phases of quantum matter in theoretical computations. For example the spectrum of the reduced density matrix, or so-called "entanglement spectrum", has become a widely used diagnostic for universal topological properties of quantum phases. However, while being convenient to calculate theoretically, it is notoriously hard to measure in experiments. Here we use the IBM quantum computer to make the first ever measurement of the entanglement spectrum of a symmetry-protected topological state. We are able to distinguish its entanglement spe…
It is shown that quantum walks on one-dimensional arrays of special linear-optical units allow the simulation of discrete-time Hamiltonian systems with distinct topological phases. In particular, a slightly modified version of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) system can be simulated, which exhibits states of nonzero winding number and has topologically protected boundary states. In the large-system limit this approach uses quadratically fewer resources to carry out quantum simulations than previous linear-optical approaches and can be readily generalized to higher-dimensional systems. The basic …
We study the effect of interactions on 2D fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases using the recently proposed braiding statistics approach. We focus on a simple class of examples: superconductors with a Z2 Ising symmetry. Although these systems are classified by Z in the noninteracting limit, our results suggest that the classification collapses to Z8 in the presence of interactions -- consistent with previous work that analyzed the stability of the edge. Specifically, we show that there are at least 8 different types of Ising superconductors that cannot be adiabatically connecte…
We report ab initio calculations showing that a single one-dimensional extended defect can originate topologically-protected metallic states in the bulk of two-dimensional topological insulators. We find that a narrow extended defect composed of periodic units consisting of one octogonal and two pentagonal rings embedded in the hexagonal bulk of a bismuth bilayer introduces two pairs of one-dimensional Dirac-fermion states with opposite spin-momentum locking. Although both Dirac pairs are localized along the extended-defect core, their interactions are screened due to the trivial topological n…

So far, topological band theory is discussed mainly for systems described by eigenvalue problems. Here, we develop a topological band theory described by a generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP). Our analysis elucidates that non-Hermitian topological band structures may emerge for systems described by a GEVP with Hermitian matrices. The above result is verified by analyzing a two-dimensional toy model where symmetry-protected exceptional rings (SPERs) emerge although the matrices involved are Hermitian. Remarkably, these SPERs are protected by emergent symmetry, which is unique to the systems d…
Topological phase transition induced by spatially-tuned single-site measurement is investigated in a measurement-only circuit, in which three different types of projective measurement operator. Specific spatial setting and combination of commutation relations among three measurement operators generate such a transition. In practice, symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase is recovered on even sublattice by eliminating a projective measurement disturbing the SPT via applying another spatially-tuned projective measurement on odd sublattice. We further investigate the critical properties of th…
Slow light waveguides are advantageous for implementing high-performance single-photon sources required for scalable operation of integrated quantum photonic circuits (IQPCs), though such waveguides are known to suffer from propagation loss due to backscattering. A way to overcome the drawback is to use topological photonics, in which robust waveguiding in topologically-protected optical modes has recently been demonstrated. Here, we report single-photon sources using single quantum dots (QDs) embedded in topological slow light waveguides based on valley photonic crystals. We observe Purcell-e…
Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are short-range entangled phases of matter with a non-local order parameter which are preserved under a local symmetry group. Here, by using unsupervised learning algorithm, namely the diffusion maps, we demonstrate that can differentiate between symmetry broken phases and topologically ordered phases, and between non-trivial topological phases in different classes. In particular, we show that the phase transitions associated with these phases can be detected in different bosonic and fermionic models in one dimension. This includes the interacting SS…
We classify subsystem symmetry-protected topological (SSPT) phases in $3+1$D protected by planar subsystem symmetries, which are dual to abelian fracton topological orders. We distinguish between weak SSPTs, which can be constructed by stacking $2+1$D SPTs, and strong SSPTs, which cannot. We identify signatures of strong phases, and show by explicit construction that such phases exist. A classification of strong phases is presented for an arbitrary finite abelian group. Finally, we show that fracton orders realizable via $p$-string condensation are dual to weak SSPTs, while strong SSPTs do not…
The concept of topological phases is a powerful framework to characterize ground states of quantum many-body systems that goes beyond the paradigm of symmetry breaking. While a few topological phases appear in condensed matter systems, a current challenge is the implementation and study of such quantum many-body ground states in artificial matter. Here, we report the experimental realization of a symmetry protected topological phase of interacting bosons in a one-dimensional lattice, and demonstrate a robust ground state degeneracy attributed to protected edge states. The setup is based on ato…
We introduce a ${\mathbb Z}_2$-index for time reversal invariant Hamiltonians with unique gapped ground state on quantum spin chains. We show this is an invariant of a $C^1$-classification of gapped Hamiltonians.
We present a fully many-body formulation of topological invariants for various topological phases of fermions protected by antiunitary symmetry, which does not refer to single particle wave functions. For example, we construct the many-body $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant for time-reversal symmetric topological insulators in two spatial dimensions, which is a many-body counterpart of the Kane-Mele $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant written in terms of single-particle Bloch wave functions. We show that an important ingredient for the construction of the many-body topological invariants is a fermioni…
We propose a non-Hermitian topological system protected by the generalized rotational symmetry which invokes rotation in space and Hermitian conjugation. The system, described by the tight-binding model with nonreciprocal hopping, is found to host two pairs of in-gap edge modes in the gapped topological phase and is characterized by the non-Hermitian (NH) Chern number $C_{NH}=2$. The quantization of the non-Hermitian Chern number is shown to be protected by the generalized rotational symmetry $Ĥ^{+}=ÛĤÛ^{+}$ of the system. Our finding paves the way towards novel non-Hermitian topological syste…
Floquet symmetry protected topological (FSPT) phases are non-equilibrium topological phases enabled by time-periodic driving. FSPT phases of 1d chains of bosons, spins, or qubits host dynamically protected edge states that can store quantum information without decoherence, making them promising for use as quantum memories. While FSPT order cannot be detected by any local measurement, here we construct non-local string order parameters that directly measure general 1d FSPT order. We propose a superconducting-qubit array based realization of the simplest Ising-FSPT, which can be implemented with…
Using superconducting quantum circuit elements, we propose an approach to experimentally construct a Kitaev lattice, which is an anisotropic spin model on a honeycomb lattice with three types of nearest-neighbor interactions and having topologically protected ground states. We study two particular parameter regimes to demonstrate both vortex and bond-state excitations. Our proposal outlines an experimentally realizable artificial many-body system that exhibits exotic topological properties.
The second law of thermodynamics points to the existence of an `arrow of time', along which entropy only increases. This arises despite the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) of the microscopic laws of nature. Within quantum theory, TRS underpins many interesting phenomena, most notably topological insulators and the Haldane phase of quantum magnets. Here, we demonstrate that such TRS-protected effects are fundamentally unstable against coupling to an environment. Irrespective of the microscopic symmetries, interactions between a quantum system and its surroundings facilitate processes which would b…
One of the most striking features of quantum mechanics is the appearance of phases of matter with topological origins. These phases result in remarkably robust macroscopic phenomena such as the edge modes in integer quantum Hall systems, the gapless surface states of topological insulators, and elementary excitations with non-abelian statistics in fractional quantum Hall systems and topological superconductors. Many of these states hold promise in the applications to quantum memories and quantum computation. Artificial quantum systems, with their precise controllability, provide a versatile pl…
Majorana zero modes are usually attributed to topological superconductors. We study a class of two-dimensional topologically trivial superconductors without chiral edge modes, which nevertheless host robust Majorana zero modes in topological defects. The construction of this minimal single-band model is facilitated by the Hopf map and the Hopf invariant. This work will stimulate investigations of Majorana zero modes in superconductors in the topologically trivial regime.
Higher symmetries can emerge at low energies in a topologically ordered state with no symmetry, when some topological excitations have very high energy scales while other topological excitations have low energies. The low energy properties of topological orders in this limit, with the emergent higher symmetries, may be described by higher symmetry protected topological order. This motivates us, as a simplest example, to study a lattice model of $\mathbb{Z}_n$-1-symmetry protected topological (1-SPT) states in 3+1D for even $n$. We write down an exactly solvable lattice model and study its boun…
