In this work we analyse the structure of a subspace of the phase space of the star-forming region NGC~ 2264 using the Spectrum of Kinematic Groupings (SKG). We show that the SKG can be used to process a collection of star data to find substructure at different scales. We have found structure associated with the NGC~ 2264 region and also with the background area. In the NGC~ 2264 region, a hierarchical analysis shows substructure compatible with that found in previous specific studies of the area but with an objective, compact methodology that allows us to homogeneously compare the structure of different clusters and star-forming regions. Moreover, this structure is compatible with the different ages of the main NGC~ 2264 star-forming populations. The structure found in the field can be roughly associated with giant stars far in the background, dynamically decoupled from NGC~ 2264, which could be related either with the Outer Arm or Monoceros Ring. The results in this paper confirm the relationship between structure in the RV phase-space subspace and different kinds of populations, defined by other variables not necessarily analysed with the SKG, such as age or distance, showing the importance of detecting phase-space substructure in order to trace stellar populations in the broadest sense of the word.
The star-forming regions (SFRs) in the peculiar galaxies NGC 660, NGC 1512, NGC 4395 and NGC 4618 are studied. The relationships between such characteristics of star forming regions as UV, nearand far-IR fluxes, as well as in the Halpha and HI lines, surface brightness in these ranges, and the scatter of the radial velocities of ionized and neutral hydrogen are considered. It is shown that in all the galaxies considered, the IR fluxes from SFRs are less than in the "normal" galaxies, but for different reasons: in the galaxies with signs of recent interaction NGC 660 and NGC 1512, this is due t…
We analyze parameters of the interstellar matter emission in star-forming complexes in the high metallicity galaxies NGC~628, NGC~2976, and NGC~3351, which have different morphological types. The relation between H$α$ emission and emission in CO and HI lines is considered along with the relation between H$α$ emission and dust emission in the infrared range (IR). The fluxes and surface brightnesses in the UV and IR correlate well with H$α$ emission. The HI emission also correlates well with H$α$, while the correlation between the CO and H$α$ emission is much less prominent. The ratio of the flu…
We present new molecular gas maps of NGC5195 (alternatively known as M51b) from the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA), including 12CO(1-0), 13CO(1-0), CN(1-0), and CS(2-1). NGC5195 has also been detected in 3mm continuum. NGC5195 has a 12CO/13CO ratio consistent with normal star-forming galaxies. The CN(1-0) intensity is higher than is seen in an average star-forming galaxy, possibly enhanced in the diffuse photo-dissociation regions. Stellar template fitting of the nuclear spectrum of NGC5195 shows two stellar populations: an 80% mass fraction of old (>10Gyr) and a 2…
We present a comparative study of CO and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission toward a region including the massive star-forming regions of NGC 6334 and NGC 6357. We use the NANTEN $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1--0) data and the $AKARI$ 9 $μ$m All-Sky diffuse map in order to evaluate the calibration accuracy of the $AKARI$ data. We confirm that the overall CO distribution shows a good spatial correspondence with the PAH emission, and their intensities exhibit a good power-law correlation with a spatial resolution down to 4$'$ over the region of 10$^\circ$$\times$10$^\circ$. We also reveal poorer …
Galaxies with polar rings consist of two subsystems, a disk and a ring, which rotate almost in orthogonal planes. In this paper, we analyze the parameters characterizing the composition of the interstellar medium and star formation in star-forming complexes, belonging to a polar ring galaxy NGC660. We show that star-forming regions in the ring of the galaxy are distinctively different from those in the galaxy disk. They possess substantially lower infrared luminosities, indicative of less dust mass in these regions than in a typical disk star-forming region. UV and H$α$ luminosities also appea…
We present Very Large Array observations of the 7_0-6_1 A^+ methanol maser transition at 44 GHz towards NGC 6334F, G8.67-0.36, and M17. These arcsecond resolution observations complete a previous, larger VLA survey of this maser transition in high-mass star-forming regions reported by Kurtz et al. We confirm the presence of 44 GHz methanol maser emission in all three sources, detecting eight distinct maser components in NGC 6334F, twelve components in G8.67-0.36 and one in M17.
We investigate the spatial regularity in the distribution of the young stellar population along spiral arms of three late type spiral galaxies: NGC 895, NGC 5474, and NGC 6946. This study is based on an analysis of photometric properties of spiral arms using {\it GALEX} ultraviolet, optical UBVRI, Halpha, and 8mum {IRAC} infrared surface photometry data. Using the Fourier analysis approach, we found features of spatial regularity or quasi-regularity in the distribution of the young stellar population or (and) regular chains of star formation regions in all arms of NGC 895, NGC 5474, and NGC 69…
We present a far-UV (FUV) study of the star-forming complexes (SFCs) in three nearby galaxies using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). The galaxies are close to face-on and show significant outer disk star formation. Two of them are isolated (NGC 628, NGC 6946), and one is interacting with distant companions (NGC 5457). We compared the properties of the SFCs inside and outside the optical radius (R$_{25}$). We estimated the sizes, star formation rates (SFRs), metallicities, and the Toomre Q parameter of the SFCs. We find that the outer disk SFCs are at least ten times smaller in area th…
We present a study of complexes of young massive star clusters (YMCs), embedded in extragalactic giant HII regions, based on the coupling of spectroscopic with photometric and spectrophotometric observations of about 100 star forming regions in seven spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 783, NGC 2336, NGC 6217, NGC 6946, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678). The complete observational database has been observed and accumulated within the framework of our comprehensive study of extragalactic star forming regions. The current paper presents the last part of either unpublished or refreshed photometric and spectropho…
We discuss integral field spectra of the compact star-forming complex that is the brightest near-infrared (NIR) source in the central regions of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. The spectra cover the H and K passbands and were recorded with the Gemini NIR Spectrograph during sub-arcsec seeing conditions. Absorption features in the spectrum of the star-forming complex are weaker than in the surroundings. An absorption feature is found near 1.78um that coincides with the location of a C2 bandhead. Emission lines of Brgamma, [FeII], and HeI2.06um do not track the NIR continuum light. Pockets of star…
Secular and environmental effects play a significant role in regulating the star formation rate and hence the evolution of the galaxies. Since UV flux is a direct tracer of the star formation in galaxies, the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard ASTROSAT enables us to characterize the star forming regions in a galaxy with its remarkable spatial resolution. In this study, we focus on the secular evolution of NGC 628, a spiral galaxy in the local universe. We exploit the resolution of UVIT to resolve up to $\sim$ 63 pc in NGC 628 for identification and characterization of the star formin…
Long slit spectra recorded with GMOS on Gemini South are used to examine the star-forming history of the lenticular galaxy NGC 5102. Structural and supplemental photometric information are obtained from archival Spitzer [3.6] images. Comparisons with model spectra point to luminosity-weighted metallicities that are consistent with the colors of resolved red giant branch stars in the disk. The nucleus has a luminosity-weighted age at visible wavelengths of ~1 Gyr, and the integrated light is dominated by stars that formed over a time period of only a few hundred Myr. For comparison, the luminos…
We analyze optical data cubes of the nuclear regions of two late-type galaxies, NGC 908 and NGC 1187, obtained with the Integral Field Unit of the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph. Both data cubes show stellar structures consistent with double nuclei. The morphology of the line-emitting areas in the central region of NGC 1187 is also of a double nucleus, while the spatial morphology of the line-emitting areas in the data cube of NGC 908 is consistent with a circumnuclear asymmetric ring. The emission-line ratios of the nuclear spectra (and, actually, along the entire field of view) of both gal…
We investigate the stellar and ionized gas kinematics, and stellar populations of NGC3182 galaxy using integral field spectrograph data from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey. We try to clarify the nature of the ring structure in NGC 3182. We find a negative stellar age gradient out to the ring, while [α/Fe] considerably enhanced in the ring. The stellar metallicity shows a smooth negative gradient. From the line ratio diagnostic diagrams, we confirm that NGC 3182 is a Seyfert galaxy from emission line flux ratio, while the gas in the inner ring is ionized mostly by young stars.…
We present the results of our study of starforming regions in the lenticular galaxy NGC 4324. During a complex analysis of multiwavelength observational data -- the narrow-band emission-line images obtained with the 2.5-m telescope at the Caucasus Mountain Observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of the Moscow State University and the archival images in the broad bands of the SDSS, GALEX and WISE surveys -- we have detected young starforming complexes (clumps) located in the inner ring of the lenticular galaxy NGC 4324, and we have established a regular pattern of their distribution…
Using multi-band photometric images of M 51 and its companion NGC 5195 from ultraviolet to optical and infrared, we investigate spatially resolved stellar population properties of this interacting system with stellar population synthesis models. The observed IRX is used to constrain dust extinction. Stellar mass is also inferred from the model fitting. By fitting observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with synthetical ones, we derive two-dimensional distributions of stellar age, metallicity, dust extinction, and stellar mass. In M 51, two grand-designed spiral arms extending from the bu…
The recent star formation history (SFH) in the outer disk of NGC 300 is presented through the analysis of color magnitude diagrams (CMDs). We analyze resolved stellar photometry by creating CMDs from four Hubble Space Telescope fields containing a combination of images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys and the UVIS imager aboard the Wide Field Camera 3. From the best models of these CMDs, we derive the SFH in order to extract the young stellar component for the past 200 Myrs. We find that the young stellar disk of NGC 300 is unbroken out to at least ${\sim}$8 scale lengths (including an upp…
We report on a UV-oriented imaging survey in the fields of the old, metal-rich open clusters, NGC 6791, NGC 6819 and NGC 7142. These three clusters represent both very near and ideal stellar aggregates to match the distinctive properties of the evolved stellar populations, as in elliptical galaxies and bulges of spirals. The CMD of the three clusters is analyzed in detail, with special emphasis to the hot stellar component. We report, in this regard, one new extreme horizontal-branch star candidate in NGC 6791. For NGC 6819 and 7142, the stellar luminosity function points to a looser radial di…
We present Herschel/HIFI observations of 30 transitions of water isotopologues toward the high-mass star forming region NGC 6334 I. The line profiles of H_2^{16}O, H_2^{17}O, H_2^{18}O, and HDO show a complex pattern of emission and absorption components associated with the embedded hot cores, a lower-density envelope, two outflow components, and several foreground clouds, some associated with the NGC 6334 complex, others seen in projection against the strong continuum background of the source. Our analysis reveals an H2O ortho/para ratio of 3 +/- 0.5 in the foreground clouds, as well as the o…
We present a far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) imaging study of recent star formation in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2336 using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). NGC 2336 is nearly face-on in morphology and has a multi-armed, branching spiral structure which is associated with star forming regions distributed mainly along the spiral arms and the co-rotation ring around the bar. We have identified 72 star forming knots in the disk, of which only two are in the inter-arm regions and 6 in the co-rotation ring. We have tabulated their positions and estimated their luminosities, sizes, star f…
In a LCDM universe, disk galaxies' outer regions are the last to form. Characterizing their contents is critical for understanding the ongoing process of disk formation, but observing outer disk stellar populations is challenging due to their low surface brightness. We present extremely deep 3.6 micron observations (Spitzer IRAC) of NGC 4625, a galaxy known for its radially extended ultraviolet emitting stellar population. We combine the new imaging with archival UV imaging from the GALEX mission to derive multiwavelength radial profiles for NGC 4625 and compare them to stellar populations mod…
A giant molecular cloud has been detected surrounding the supernebula in NGC 5253, revealing details of the formation and feedback process in a very massive star cluster. "Cloud D" was recently mapped in CO J=3-2 with the Submillimeter Array. The cloud surrounds a currently forming massive cluster of mass ~10$^6$ $\rm M_\odot$ and luminosity ~10$^9$ $\rm L_\odot$. Cloud D is hot, clearly associated with the cluster, yet kinematically relatively quiescent. The dust mass is ~15,000 $\rm M_\odot$, giving a gas-to-dust ratio of ~50, nearly an order of magnitude lower than expected for this low met…
We have developed an observing program using deep, multiband imaging to probe the chaotic regions of tidal tails in search of an underlying stellar population, using NGC 3256's 400 Myr twin tidal tails as a case study. These tails have different colours of $u - g = 1.05 \pm 0.07$ and $r - i = 0.13 \pm 0.07$ for NGC 3256W, and $u - g = 1.26 \pm 0.07$ and $r - i = 0.26 \pm 0.07$ for NGC 3256E, indicating different stellar populations. These colours correspond to simple stellar population ages of $288^{+11}_{-54}$ Myr and $841^{+125}_{-157}$ Myr for NGC 3256W and NGC 3256E, respectively, suggesti…
We present Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations at 345 GHz towards the intermediate/high-mass cluster-forming region NGC 6334 V. From the dust emission we spatially resolve three dense condensations, the brightest one presenting the typical chemistry of a hot core. The magnetic field (derived from the dust polarized emission) shows a bimodal converging pattern towards the hot core. The molecular emission traces two filamentary structures at two different velocities, separated by 2 km/s, converging to the hot core and following the magnetic field distribution. We compare the velocity field an…
Context. Ionization plays a central role in the gas-phase chemistry of molecular clouds. Since ions are coupled with magnetic fields, which can in turn counteract gravitational collapse, it is of paramount importance to measure their abundance in star-forming regions. Aims. We use spectral line observations of the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334 I to derive the abundance of two of the most abundant molecular ions, HCO+ and N2H+, and consequently, the cosmic ray ionization rate. In addition, the line profiles provide information about the kinematics of this region. Methods. We present hi…
We propose that the observed stellar halo around the globular cluster (GC) NGC 1851 is evidence for its formation in the central region of its defunct host dwarf galaxy. We numerically investigate the long-term dynamical evolution of a nucleated dwarf galaxy embedded in a massive dark matter halo under the strong tidal field of the Galaxy. The dwarf galaxy is assumed to have a stellar nucleus (or a nuclear star cluster) that could be the progenitor for NGC 1851. We find that although the dark matter halo and the stellar envelope of the host dwarf of NGC 1851 can be almost completely stripped d…
In recent years, Circumnuclear Star Forming Regions (CNSFRs) have been studied in different frequencies and telescopes, diverse studies about connection between nuclear activity and star formation in the CNSFRs were doing using optical data, IFS and models. We obtain data of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 at J band between 1.35-1.32$μ$ using the 8.1m Gemini telescope and GNIRS IFU mode. We found the radial velocity and intensity maps for [FeII]$λ$12570, Pa$β$ $λ$12814 and FeII $λ$13201 lines of all the components. The gas emission has a double origin associated with photoionization by young sta…
We present new Gemini/GMOS spectroscopic and archival imaging data of the interacting galaxy NGC 92, which is part of a compact group and displays an extended tidal tail. We have studied the physical properties of 20 star-forming complexes in this system. We found that the star-forming regions located in the tidal tail of NGC 92 have ages younger than 8 Myr, which suggests that these objects were formed in situ. The spectroscopic data reveals that these regions have slightly sub-solar metallicities, suggesting that they were formed from pre-enriched material. Using the oxygen abundances derive…
Even after decades of research, the origin of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters remains enigmatic. The question as to whether the galaxy environment plays a role in their formation remains unanswered. To that extent, we analysed two classical (> 10 Gyr old) Large Magellanic Cloud globular clusters namely, NGC 1786 and NGC 1898, using imaging data from Hubble Space Telescope to compare and contrast them with ancient Galactic globular clusters to assess systematic differences that might exist between their abundance variations. We calculated their Red Giant Branch width, subtract…
We present analyses of the spatial distributions of stars in the young (1 - 3 Myr) star-forming regions IC348 and NGC1333 in the Perseus Giant Molecular Cloud. We quantify the spatial structure using the $\mathcal{Q}$-parameter and find that both IC348 and NGC1333 are smooth and centrally concentrated with $\mathcal{Q}$-parameters of 0.98 and 0.89 respectively. Neither region exhibits mass segregation ($Λ_{\rm MSR} = 1.1^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$ for IC348 and $Λ_{\rm MSR} = 1.2^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ for NGC1333, where $Λ_{\rm MSR} \sim 1$ corresponds to no mass segregation), nor do the most massive stars resid…
We present the results of integral-field spectroscopic observations of the two disk galaxies NGC 3593 and NGC 4550 obtained with VIMOS/VLT. Both galaxies are known to host 2 counter-rotating stellar disks, with the ionized gas co-rotating with one of them. We measured in each galaxy the ionized gas kinematics and metallicity, and the surface brightness, kinematics, mass surface density, and the stellar populations of the 2 stellar components to constrain the formation scenario of these peculiar galaxies. We applied a novel spectroscopic decomposition technique to both galaxies, to separate the…
Recently, Li et al. (2016) claimed to have found evidence for multiple generations of stars in the intermediate age clusters NGC 1783, NGC 1696 and NGC 411 in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC/SMC). Here we show that these young stellar populations are present in the field regions around these clusters and are not likely associated with the clusters themselves. Using the same datasets, we find that the background subtraction method adopted by the authors does not adequately remove contaminating stars in the small number Poisson limit. Hence, we conclude that their results do not provi…
We study the radial distribution of stars of different stellar generations in the globular cluster NGC 3201. From recently published multicolour photometry, a radial dependence of the location of stars on the giant branch was found. We coupled the photometric information to our sample of 100 red giants with Na, O abundances and known classification as first or second-generation stars. We find that giants stars of the second generation in NGC 3201 show a tendency to be more centrally concentrated than stars of the first generation, supporting less robust results from our spectroscopic analysis.
We report the discovery of ancient massive merger events in the early-type galaxies NGC 1380 and NGC 1427, members of the Fornax galaxy cluster. Both galaxies have been observed by the MUSE IFU instrument on the VLT, as part of the Fornax3D project. By fitting recently-developed population-orbital superposition models to the observed surface brightness as well as stellar kinematic, age, and metallicity maps, we obtain the stellar orbits, age and metallicity distributions of each galaxy. We then decompose each galaxy into multiple orbital-based components, including a dynamically hot inner stel…
The abundance of deuterated molecules in a star-forming region is sensitive to the environment in which they are formed. Deuteration fractions therefore provide a powerful tool for studying the physical and chemical evolution of a star-forming system. While local low-mass star-forming regions show very high deuteration ratios, much lower fractions are observed towards Orion and the Galactic Centre. We derive methanol deuteration fractions at a number of locations towards the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I, located at a mean distance of 1.3 kpc, and discuss how these can shed light on …
We study the globular clusters (GCs) in the spiral galaxy NGC~5907 well-known for its spectacular stellar stream -- to better understand its origin. Using wide-field Subaru/Suprime-Cam $gri$ images and deep Keck/DEIMOS multi-object spectroscopy, we identify and obtain the kinematics of several GCs superimposed on the stellar stream and the galaxy disk. We estimate the total number of globular clusters in NGC 5907 to be $154\pm44$, with a specific frequency of $0.73\pm0.21$. Our analysis also reveals a significant, new population of young star cluster candidates found mostly along the outskirts…
The $UBVRI$ CCD photometric data of open star cluster NGC 1513 are obtained with the 3.6-m Indo-Belgian Devasthal optical telescope (DOT). Analyses of the GAIA EDR3 astrometric data have identified 106 possible cluster members. The mean proper motion of the cluster is estimated as $μ_αCosδ=1.29\pm0.02$ and $μ_δ=-3.74\pm0.02$ mas yr$^{-1}$. Estimated values of reddening $E(B-V)$ and distance to the NGC 1513 are 0.65$\pm$0.03 mag and 1.33$\pm$0.1 kpc respectively. An age of $225\pm25$ Myr is assigned to the cluster by comparing theoretical isochrones with deep observed cluster sequence. Using ob…
The internal dynamics of multiple stellar populations in Globular Clusters (GCs) provides unique constraints on the physical processes responsible for their formation. Specifically, the present-day kinematics of cluster stars, such as rotation and velocity dispersion, seems to be related to the initial configuration of the system. In recent work (Milone et al. 2018), we analyzed for the first time the kinematics of the different stellar populations in NGC0104 (47Tucanae) over a large field of view, exploiting the Gaia Data Release 2 proper motions combined with multi-band ground-based photomet…
We present maps of the stellar streams detected in the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) catalogs using the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We also report the spectroscopic follow-up of the brighter DR2 stream members obtained with the high-resolution CFHT/ESPaDOnS and VLT/UVES spectrographs as well as with the medium-resolution NTT/EFOSC2 spectrograph. Two new stellar streams that do not have a clear progenitor are detected in DR2 (named Hrid and Gunnthra), and seven are detected in EDR3 (named Gaia-6 to Gaia-12). Several candidate streams are also identified. The software als…
We performed J- and R-band linear polarimetry with the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos and with the 1.6 m telescope at the Observatório do Pico dos Dias, respectively, to derive the magnetic field geometry of the diffuse molecular cloud surrounding the embedded protostellar system NGC 1333 IRAS 4A. We obtained interstellar polarization data for about two dozen stars. The distribution of polarization position angles has low dispersion and suggests the existence of an ordered magnetic field component at physical scales larger than the protostar. So…
NGC 2024, a sites of massive star formation, have complex internal structures caused by cal heating by young stars, outflows, and stellar winds. These complex cloud structures lead to intricate emission line shapes. The goal of this paper is to show that the complex line shapes of 12 CO lines in NGC 2024 can be explained consistently with a model, whose temperature and velocity structure are based on the well-established scenario of a PDR and the Blister model. We present velocity-resolved spectra of seven CO lines ranging from J=3 to J=13, and we combined these data with CO high-frequency dat…
We present an 8 pc x 5 pc resolution view of the central ~ 200 pc region of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, based on ALMA Band 7 (λ ~ 0.85 mm or ν ~ 350 GHz) observations covering 11 GHz. We resolve the nuclear starburst of NGC 253 into eight dusty star-forming clumps, 10 pc in scale, for the first time. These clumps, each of which contains (4-10) x 10^4 M_sun of dust (assuming that the dust temperature is 25 K) and up to 6 x 10^2 massive (O5V) stars, appear to be aligned in two parallel ridges, while they have been blended in previous studies. Despite the similarities in sizes and dust m…
The Sa spiral NGC 4138 is known to host two counter-rotating stellar disks, with the ionized gas co-rotating with one of them. We measured the kinematics and properties of the two counter-rotating stellar populations to constrain their formation scenario. A spectroscopic decomposition of the observed major-axis spectrum was performed to disentangle the relative contribution of the two counter-rotating stellar and one ionized-gas components. The line-strength indices of the two counter-rotating stellar components were measured and modeled with single stellar population models that account for t…
We have studied the high-mass star-forming complex NGC 6334 with ALMA in the continuum emission at a frequency of 87.6 GHz, achieving a spatial resolution of 1300 au. Detecting 142 compact sources distributed over the whole observed area, we then used machine learning algorithms to group the compact cores in different clusters. A total of four main clusters were identified: NGC 6334-E, NGC 6334-I, NGC 6334-I(N) and NGC 6334-I(NW). The typical separations between cluster members (4000-12000 au) together with the core masses (0.2-100 $M_{\odot}$) are in agreement with turbulent fragmentation at …
Small kinematically-decoupled stellar discs with scalelengths of a few tens of parsec are known to reside in the centre of galaxies. Different mechanisms have been proposed to explain how they form, including gas dissipation and merging of globular clusters. Using archival Hubble Space Telescope imaging and ground-based integral-field spectroscopy, we investigated the structure and stellar populations of the nuclear stellar disc hosted in the interacting SB0 galaxy NGC 1023. The stars of the nuclear disc are remarkably younger and more metal rich with respect to the host bulge. These findings …
We have identified a low surface brightness stellar stream from visual inspection of SDSS imaging for the edge-on, spiral galaxy NGC5387. A blue overdensity was also identified in SDSS coincident with the stream intersection with the NGC5387 disk. The overdensity was also detected in the GALEX Deep Imaging Survey and found to contribute 38% of the total FUV integrated flux from NGC5387, which suggests that the region is actively forming stars. Deeper imaging was acquired with the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT) in the B, V, and R filters that confirmed the presence of both the ste…
The stellar mass-stellar metallicity relation (MZR) is an essential approach to probe the chemical evolution of galaxies. It reflects the balance between galactic feedback and gravitational potential as a function of stellar mass. However, the current MZR of local dwarf satellite galaxies (M* <~ 10^8 Msun, measured from resolved stellar spectroscopy) may not be reconcilable with that of more massive galaxies (M* >~ 10^9.5 Msun, measured from integrated-light spectroscopy). Such a discrepancy may result from a systematic difference between the two methods, or it may indicate a break in the MZR …
We present NGC 4565 and NGC 5746 as structural analogs of our Milky Way. All three are giant, SBb - SBbc galaxies with two pseudobulges, i. e., a compact, disky, star-forming pseudobulge embedded in a vertically thick, "red and dead", boxy pseudobulge that really is a bar seen almost end-on. The stars in the boxy bulge of our Milky Way are old and enhanced in alpha elements, indicating that star formation finished within ~ 1 Gyr of when it started. Here, we present Hobby-Eberly Telescope spectroscopy of the boxy pseudobulges of NGC 4565 and NGC 5746 and show that they also are made of old and …
We discuss the nature of a discrete, compact radio source (NGC 4725 B) located $\approx$1.9 kpc from the nucleus in the nearby star-forming galaxy NGC 4725, which we believe to be a new detection of extragalactic Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME). Based on detections at 3, 15, 22, 33, and 44 GHz, NGC 4725 B is a $μ$Jy radio source peaking at $\approx$33 GHz. While the source is not identified in $BVRI$ photometry, we detect counterparts in the mid-infrared $Spitzer$/IRAC bands (3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 $μ$m) that appear to be associated with dust emission in the central region of NGC 4725. Conseque…
We present a second set of results from a wide-field photometric survey of the environs of Milky Way globular clusters. The clusters studied are NGC 1261, NGC 1851 and NGC 5824: all have data from DECam on the Blanco 4m telescope. NGC 5824 also has data from the Magellan Clay telescope with MegaCam. We confirm the existence of a large diffuse stellar envelope surrounding NGC 1851 of size at least 240 pc in radius. The radial density profile of the envelope follows a power-law decline with index $γ= -1.5 \pm 0.2$ and the projected shape is slightly elliptical. For NGC 5824 there is no strong de…
We present MUSE integral field spectroscopic data of the S0 galaxy NGC 3115 obtained during the instrument commissioning at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). We analyse the galaxy stellar kinematics and stellar populations and present two dimensional maps of their associated quantities. We thus illustrate the capacity of MUSE to map extra-galactic sources to large radii in an efficient manner, i.e., ~4 Re, and provide relevant constraints on its mass assembly. We probe the well known set of substructures of NGC 3115 (its nuclear disc, stellar rings, outer kpc-scale stellar disc and spheroid)…
The halos of disk galaxies form a crucial connection between the galaxy disk and the intergalactic medium. Massive stars, HII regions, or dwarf galaxies located in the halos of galaxies are potential tracers of recent accretion and/or outflows of gas, and are additional contributors to the photon field and the gas phase metallicity. We investigate the nature and origin of a star-forming dwarf galaxy candidate located in the halo of the edge-on Virgo galaxy NGC 4634 with a projected distance of 1.4 kpc and a H$α$ star formation rate of $\sim 4.7 \times 10^{-3} \text{M}_\odot \text{yr}^{-1}$ in …
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) observations of the massive infrared dark cloud NGC 6334S (also known as IRDC G350.56+0.44), located at the southwestern end of the NGC 6334 molecular cloud complex. The H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and the NH$_{2}$D lines covered by the ALMA observations at a $\sim$3$^{\prime\prime}$ angular resolution ($\sim$0.02 pc) reveal that the spatially unresolved non-thermal motions are predominantly subsonic and transonic, a condition analogous to that found in low-mass star-forming molecular clouds. The obs…
We present a detailed stellar clustering analysis with the application of the two-point correlation function on distinct young stellar ensembles. Our aim is to understand how stellar systems are assembled at the earliest stages of their formation. Our object of interest is the star-forming region NGC 346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. It is a young stellar system well-revealed from its natal environment, comprising complete samples of pre--main-sequence and upper main-sequence stars, very close to their formation. We apply a comprehensive characterization of the autocorrelation function for bo…
The fundamentals of estimating essential stellar parameters of an open cluster-NGC 2360 and globular clusters-NGC 5272 are presented extensively in this work. Here, the evaluation of stellar parameters, by manually fitting the appropriate isochrones on the color magnitude diagrams (CMDs), of the selected star clusters is discussed comprehensively. Aperture photometry and PSF fitting photometry are conducted on g, r, and i standard band filter images of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) using the aperture photometry tool (APT) to obtain the respective CMDs. Further, to achieve the stellar paramet…
The recent discovery of double main sequences in the young, massive star cluster NGC 1856 has caught significant attention. The observations can be explained by invoking two stellar generations with different ages and metallicities or by a single generation of stars composed of two populations characterized by different rotation rates. We analyzed the number ratios of stars belonging to both main-sequence components in NGC 1856 as a function of radius. We found that their number ratios remain approximately unchanged from the cluster's central region to its periphery, indicating that both compo…
Star formation in galaxies is a hierarchical process with a wide range of scales from smaller clusters to larger stellar complexes. Here, we present an ultra-violet imaging study of the nearby flocculent spiral galaxy NGC 7793, observed with the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). We find that the disk scale-length estimated in Far-UV (2.64$\pm$0.16 kpc) is larger than that in Near-UV (2.21$\pm$0.21 kpc) and optical (1.08 kpc), which supports the inside-out growth scenario of the galaxy disk. The star-forming UV disk is also found to be contained within the extent of H~I gas of column densi…
