We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) observations of the massive infrared dark cloud NGC 6334S (also known as IRDC G350.56+0.44), located at the southwestern end of the NGC 6334 molecular cloud complex. The H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and the NH$_{2}$D lines covered by the ALMA observations at a $\sim$3$^{\prime\prime}$ angular resolution ($\sim$0.02 pc) reveal that the spatially unresolved non-thermal motions are predominantly subsonic and transonic, a condition analogous to that found in low-mass star-forming molecular clouds. The observed supersonic non-thermal velocity dispersions in massive star forming regions, often reported in the literature, might be significantly biased by poor spatial resolutions that broaden the observed line widths due to unresolved motions within the telescope beam. Our 3~mm continuum image resolves 49 dense cores, whose masses range from 0.17 to 14 $M_{\odot}$. The majority of them are resolved with multiple velocity components. Our analyses of these gas velocity components find an anti-correlation between the gas mass and the virial parameter. This implies that the more massive structures tend to be more gravitationally unstable. Finally, we find that the external pressure in the NGC 6334S cloud is important in confining these dense structures, and may play a role in the formation of dense cores, and subsequently, the embedded young stars.
We present a study of narrow filaments toward a massive infrared dark cloud, NGC 6334S, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Thirteen gas filaments are identified using the H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ line, while a single continuum filament is revealed by the continuum emission. The filaments present a compact radial distribution with a median filament width of $\sim$0.04 pc narrower than the previously proposed `quasi-universal' 0.1~pc filament width. The higher spatial resolution observations and higher-density gas tracer tend to identify even narrower and lower mass filaments…
We study fundamental properties of isothermal, steady and spherically symmetric galactic outflow in the gravitational potential of a cold dark matter halo and a central super-massive black hole. We find that there are two transonic solutions having different properties: each solution is mainly produced by the dark matter halo and the super-massive black hole, respectively. Furthermore, we apply our model to the Sombrero galaxy. In this galaxy, Chandra X-ray observatory detected the diffuse hot gas as the trace of galactic outflows while the star-formation rate is low and the observed gas densi…
We report here Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) N$_2$H$^+$ (1-0) images of the Orion Molecular Cloud 2 and 3 (OMC-2/3) with high angular resolution (3'' or 1200 au) and high spatial dynamic range. Combining dataset from the ALMA main array, ALMA Compact Array (ACA), the Nobeyama 45m Telescope, and the JVLA (providing temperature measurement on matching scales), we find that most of the dense gas in OMC-2/3 is subsonic ($\rm σ_{NT}/c_{s}$ = 0.62) with a mean line width ($Δ\upsilon$) of 0.39 km s$^{-1}$ FWHM. This is markedly different from the majority of previous observation…
We characterize in detail the two ~0.3 pc long filamentary structures found within the subsonic region of Barnard 5. We use combined GBT and VLA observations of the molecular lines NH$_3$(1,1) and (2,2) at a resolution of 1800 au, as well as JCMT continuum observations at 850 and 450 $μ$m at a resolution of 4400 au and 3000 au, respectively. We find that both filaments are highly super-critical with a mean mass per unit length, $M/L$, of ~80 M$_\odot$ pc$^{-1}$, after background subtraction, with local increases reaching values of ~150 M$_\odot$ pc$^{-1}$. This would require a magnetic field s…
We present the results on the physical properties of filaments and dense cores in IC 5146, as a part of the TRAO FUNS project. We carried out On-The-Fly mapping observations using the Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory (TRAO) 14m telescope covering about 1 square degree of the area of IC 5146 using various molecular lines. We identified 14 filaments (24 in total, including sub-filaments) from the C$^{18}$O (1-0) data cube and 22 dense cores from the $\rm N_{2}H^{+}$ (1-0) data. We examined the filaments' gravitational criticality, turbulence properties, accretion rate from filaments to dense c…
Star-forming molecular clouds are characterised by the ubiquity of intertwined filaments. The filaments have been observed in both high- and low-mass star-forming regions, and are thought to split into collections of sonic fibres. The locations where filaments converge are termed hubs, and these are associated with the young stellar clusters. However, the observations of filamentary structures within hubs at distances require a high angular resolution that limits the number of such studies conducted so far. The integral shaped filament of the Orion A molecular cloud is noted for harbouring sev…
Observations are revealing the ubiquity of filamentary structures in molecular clouds. As cores are often embedded in filaments, it is important to understand how line profiles from such systems differ from those of isolated cores. We perform radiative transfer calculations on a hydrodynamic simulation of a molecular cloud in order to model line emission from collapsing cores embedded in filaments. We model two optically thick lines, CS(2-1) and HCN(1-0), and one optically thin line, N2H+(1-0), from three embedded cores. In the hydrodynamic simulation, gas self-gravity, turbulence, and bulk fl…
We present a ~6.5'x8' Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) mosaic observations of the NH3 (1,1) emission in the Barnard 5 region in Perseus, with an angular resolution of 6". This map covers the coherent region, where the dense gas presents subsonic non-thermal motions (as seen from single dish observations with the Green Bank Telescope, GBT). The combined EVLA and GBT observations reveal, for the first time, a striking filamentary structure (20" wide or 5,000 AU at the distance of Perseus) in this low-mass star forming region. The integrated intensity profile of this structure is consistent with …
Filamentary structures are common in molecular clouds. Explaining how they fragment to dense cores is a missing step in understanding their role in star formation. We perform a case study of whether low-mass filaments are close-to hydrostatic prior to their fragmentation, and whether their fragmentation agrees with gravitational fragmentation models. For this, we study the 6.5 pc long Musca molecular cloud that is an ideal candidate for a filament at an early stage of fragmentation. We employ dust extinction mapping in conjunction with near-infrared data from the NEWFIRM instrument, and 870 um…
To probe the initial conditions for high-mass star and cluster formation, we investigate the properties of dense filaments within the infrared dark cloud G035.39-00.33 (IRDC G035.39) in a combined Very Large Array (VLA) and the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) mosaic tracing the NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) emission down to 0.08 pc scales. Using agglomerative hierarchical clustering on multiple line-of-sight velocity component fitting results, we identify seven extended velocity-coherent components in our data, likely representing spatially coherent physical structures, some exhibiting complex gas motions. T…

TRAO Survey of Nearby Filamentary Molecular clouds, the Universal Nursery of Stars (TRAO-FUNS). III. Filaments and dense cores in the NGC 2068 and NGC 2071 regions of Orion B
Filamentary structures are ubiquitous in the interstellar medium, yet their formation, internal structure, and longevity have not been studied in detail. We report the results from a comprehensive numerical study that investigates the characteristics, formation, and evolution of filaments arising from magnetohydrodynamic interactions between supersonic winds and dense clouds. Here we improve on previous simulations by utilising sharper density contrasts and higher numerical resolutions. By following multiple density tracers, we find that material in the envelopes of the clouds is removed and d…
We explore the decay of turbulence and magnetic fields generated by fluctuation dynamo action in the context of galaxy clusters where such a decaying phase can occur in the aftermath of a major merger event. Using idealized numerical simulations that start from a kinetically dominated regime we focus on the decay of the steady state rms velocity and the magnetic field for a wide range of conditions that include varying the compressibility of the flow, the forcing wave number, and the magnetic Prandtl number. Irrespective of the compressibility of the flow, both the rms velocity and the rms mag…
We present combined observations of the NH3 (J,K) = (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions towards OMC1 in Orion A obtained by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the 100 m Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). With an angular resolution of 6" (0.01 pc), these observations reveal with unprecedented detail the complex filamentary structure extending north of the active Orion BN/KL region in a field covering 6' x 7'. We find a 0.012 pc wide filament within OMC1, with an aspect ratio of ~37:1, that was missed in previous studies. Its orientation is directly compared to the relative …
We investigate the physical properties of dense cores formed in turbulent, magnetized, parsec-scale clumps of molecular clouds, using three-dimensional numerical simulations that include protostellar outflow feedback. The dense cores are identified in the simulated density data cube through a clumpfind algorithm. We find that the core velocity dispersion does not show any clear dependence on the core size, in contrast to Larson's linewidth-size relation, but consistent with recent observations. In the absence of a magnetic field, the majority of the cores have supersonic velocity dispersions. …
Filaments play a central role in the molecular clouds' evolution, but their internal dynamical properties remain poorly characterized. To further explore the physical state of these structures, we have investigated the kinematic properties of the Musca cloud. We have sampled the main axis of this filamentary cloud in $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O (2--1) lines using APEX observations. The different line profiles in Musca shows that this cloud presents a continuous and quiescent velocity field along its $\sim$6.5 pc of length. With an internal gas kinematics dominated by thermal motions (i.e., $σ_{NT}…
We present new continuum and molecular line data from the ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions (ATOMS) survey for the two protoclusters, G12.42+0.50 and G19.88-0.53. The 3 mm continuum maps reveal seven cores in each of the two globally contracting protoclusters. These cores satisfy the radius-mass relation and the surface mass density criteria for high-mass star formation. Similar to their natal clumps, the virial analysis of the cores suggests that they are undergoing gravitational collapse ($\rm α_{vir} << 2$). The clump to core scale fragmentation is investiga…
We investigate the formation of molecular clouds from atomic gas by using three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulations, including non-equilibrium chemical reactions, heating/cooling processes, and self-gravity by changing the collision speed $V_0$ and the angle $θ$ between the magnetic field and colliding flow. We found that the efficiency of the dense gas formation depends on $θ$. For small $θ$, anisotropic super-Alfvénic turbulence delays the formation of gravitationally unstable clumps. An increase in $θ$ develops shock-amplified magnetic fields along which the gas is accumulated, mak…
We present a Nobeyama 45 m Radio Telescope map and Australia Telescope Compact Array pointed observations of N2H+ 1-0 emission towards the clustered, low mass star forming Oph B Core within the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. We compare these data with previously published results of high resolution NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) observations in Oph B. We use 3D Clumpfind to identify emission features in the single-dish N2H+ map, and find that the N2H+ `clumps' match well similar features previously identified in NH3 (1,1) emission, but are frequently offset to clumps identified at similar resolution in 850 m…
Abridged. Are all filaments bundles of fibers? To address this question, we have investigated the gas organization within the paradigmatic Integral Shape Filament (ISF). We combined two new ALMA Cycle 3 mosaics with previous IRAM 30m observations to produce a high-dynamic range N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) emission map of the ISF tracing its high-density material and velocity structure down to scales of 0.009 pc. From the analysis of the gas kinematics, we identify a total of 55 dense fibers in the central region of the ISF. Independently of their location, these fibers are characterized by transonic inter…
We present observations of N2H+(1-0), HCO+(1-0), and HCN(1-0) toward the Serpens Main molecular cloud from the CARMA Large Area Star Formation Survey (CLASSy). We mapped 150 square arcminutes of Serpens Main with an angular resolution of 7 arcsecs. The gas emission is concentrated in two subclusters (the NW and SE subclusters). The SE subcluster has more prominent filamentary structures and more complicated kinematics compared to the NW subcluster. The majority of gas in the two subclusters has subsonic to sonic velocity dispersions. We applied a dendrogram technique with N2H+(1-0) to study th…
