Caustics occur widely in dynamics and take on shapes classified by catastrophe theory. At finite wavelengths they produce interference patterns containing networks of vortices (phase singularities). Here we investigate caustics in quantized fields, focusing on the collective dynamics of quantum spins. We show that, following a quench, caustics are generated in the Fock space amplitudes specifying the many-body configuration and which are accessible in experiments with cold atoms, ions or photons. The granularity of quantum fields removes all singularities, including phase singularities, converting point vortices into nonlocal vortices that annihilate in pairs as the quantization scale is increased. Furthermore, the continuous scaling laws of wave catastrophes are replaced by discrete versions. Such `quantum catastrophes' are expected to be universal dynamical features of quantized fields.
We investigate the spontaneous generation of crystallized topological defects via the combining effects of fast rotation and rapid thermal quench on the spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. By solving the stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we show that, when the system reaches equilibrium, a hexagonal lattice of skyrmions, and a square lattice of half-quantized vortices can be formed in a ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spinor BEC, respetively, which can be imaged by using the polarization-dependent phase-contrast method.
We show that the light cone-like structures that form in spin chains after a quench are quantum caustics. Their natural description is in terms of catastrophe theory and this implies: 1) a hierarchy of light cone structures corresponding to the different catastrophes; 2) dressing by characteristic wave functions that obey scaling laws determined by the Arnol'd and Berry indices; 3) a network of vortex-antivortex pairs in space-time inside the cone. We illustrate the theory by giving explicit calculations for the transverse field Ising model and the XY model, finding fold catastrophes dressed b…
Using the recently developed Bloch-state tomography technique, the quasimomentum $\bf k$-dependent Bloch states ${\left( {\sin \left( {θ_{\mathbf{k}}/2} \right),\; - \cos \left( {θ_{\mathbf{k}}/2} \right){e^{i{ϕ_{\mathbf{k}}}}}} \right)^T}$ of a two-band tight-binding model with two sublattices can be mapped out. We show that, if we prepare the initial Bloch state as the lower-band eigenstate of a topologically trivial Haldane Hamiltonian $H_i$, and then quench the Haldane Hamiltonian to $H_f$, the time-dependent azimuthal phase ${ϕ_{\mathbf{k}}(t)}$ supports two types of vortices. The first t…
We consider a two-dimensional (2D) counterpart of the experiment that led to the creation of quasi-1D bright solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) [Nature 417, 150--153 (2002)]. We start by identifying the ground state of the 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation for repulsive interactions, with a harmonic-oscillator (HO) trap, and with or without an optical lattice (OL). Subsequently, we switch the sign of the interaction to induce interatomic attraction and monitor the ensuing dynamics. Regions of the stable self-trapping and catastrophic collapse of 2D fundamental solitons are identified in t…
We demonstrate that a quasi-two-dimensional spin-1 condensate quenched to a ferromagnetic phase undergoes universal coarsening in its late time dynamics. The quench can be implemented by a sudden change in the applied magnetic field and, depending on the final value, the ferromagnetic phase has easy-axis (Ising) or easy-plane (XY) symmetry, with different dynamical critical exponents. Our results for the easy-plane phase reveal a fractal domain structure and the crucial role of polar-core spin vortices in the coarsening dynamics.
Coarsening dynamics, the canonical theory of phase ordering following a quench across a symmetry breaking phase transition, is thought to be driven by the annihilation of topological defects. Here we show that this understanding is incomplete. We simulate the dynamics of an isolated spin-1 condensate quenched into the easy-plane ferromagnetic phase and find that the mutual annihilation of spin vortices does not take the system to the equilibrium state. A nonequilibrium background of long wavelength spin waves remain at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature, an order of magnitude hott…

We consider the phase ordering dynamics of an isolated quasi-two-dimensional spin-1 Bose gas quenched into an easy-plane ferromagnetic phase. Preparing the initial system in an unmagnetized anti-ferromagnetic state the subsequent ordering involves both polar core and Mermin-Ho spin vortices, with the ratio between the different vortices controllable by the quench parameter. Ferromagnetic domain growth occurs as these vortices annihilate. The distinct dynamics of the two types of vortices means that the domain growth law is determined by two macroscopic length scales, violating the standard dyn…
We investigate the phase transition dynamics of a quasi-2D antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate from the easy-axis polar phase to the easy-plane polar phase, which is initiated by suddenly changing the sign of the quadratic Zeeman energy $q$. We observe the emergence and decay of spin turbulence and the formation of half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in the quenched condensate. The characteristic time and length scales of the turbulence generation dynamics are proportional to $|q|^{-1/2}$ as inherited from the dynamic instability of the initial state. In the evolution of the spin turbul…
We examine the dynamics of a quasi-two-dimensional spin-1 condensate in which the quadratic Zeeman energy q is suddenly quenched to a value where the system has a ferromagnetic ground state. There are two distinct types of ferromagnetic phases, i.e. a range of q values where the magnetization prefers to be in the direction of the external field (easy-axis), and a range of q values where it prefers to be transverse to the field (easy-plane). We study the quench dynamics for a variety of q values and show that there is a single dynamical critical exponent to characterize the scale invariant doma…
We consider the formation of order in a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) anti-ferromagnetic spin-1 condensate quenched from an easy-axis (EA) to an easy-plane (EP) nematic phase. We define the relevant order parameter to quantify the spin-nematic degrees of freedom and study the evolution of the spin-nematic and superfluid order during the coarsening dynamics using numerical simulations. We observe dynamical scaling in the late time dynamics with both types of order extending across the system with a diffusive growth law. We identify half-quantum vortices (HQVs) as the relevant topological def…
In zero magnetic field the ground state manifold of a ferromagnetic spin-1 condensate is SO(3) and exhibits $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices as topological defects. We investigate the phase ordering dynamics of this system after being quenched into this ferromagnetic phase from a zero temperature unmagnetized phase. Following the quench, we observe the ordering of both magnetic and gauge domains. We find that these domains grow diffusively, i.e. with domain size $L(t)\sim t^{1/2}$, and exhibit dynamic scale invariance. The coarsening dynamics progresses as $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices annihilate, however we…
We report the observation of spin domain walls bounded by half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with antiferromagnetic interactions. A spinor condensate is initially prepared in the easy-plane polar phase, and then, suddenly quenched into the easy-axis polar phase. Domain walls are created via the spontaneous $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry breaking in the phase transition and the walls dynamically split into composite defects due to snake instability. The end points of the defects are identified as HQVs for the polar order parameter and the mass supercurrent in their proxi…
We investigate quantum quenches and the Loschmidt echo in the two dimensional, three band $α-T_3$ model, a close descendant of the dice lattice. By adding a chemical potential to the central site, the integral of the Berry curvature of the bands in different valleys is continously tunable by the ratio of the hopping integrals between the sublattices. By investigating one and two filled bands, we find that dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT), i.e. nonanalytical temporal behaviour in the rate function of the return amplitude, occurs for a certain range of parameters, independent of the ban…
In the present paper, we shall study effect of a random quenched external field for spin order and also multiple Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). This system is realized by the cold atomic gases in an optical lattice. In particular, we are interested in the strong-repulsion region of two-component gases for which the bosonic t-J model is a good effective model. In the bosonic t-J model, a long-range order of the pseudo-spin and also BEC of atoms appear quite naturally as in the fermion t-J model for the high-temperature superconducting materials. Random Raman scattering between two internal s…
Within the ultimate goal of classifying universality in quantum many-body dynamics, understanding the relation between out-of-equilibrium and equilibrium criticality is a crucial objective. Models with power-law interactions exhibit rich well-understood critical behavior in equilibrium, but the out-of-equilibrium picture has remained incomplete, despite recent experimental progress. We construct the rich dynamical phase diagram of free-fermionic chains with power-law hopping and pairing, and provide analytic and numerical evidence showing a direct connection between nonanalyticities of the ret…
We present a detailed study of the equilibrium properties and stochastic dynamic evolution of the U(1)-invariant relativistic complex field theory in three dimensions. This model has been used to describe, in various limits, properties of relativistic bosons at finite chemical potential, type II su- perconductors, magnetic materials and aspects of cosmology. We characterise the thermodynamic second-order phase transition in different ways. We study the equilibrium vortex configurations and their statistical and geometrical properties in equilibrium at all temperatures. We show that at very hig…
