This work introduces a novel, modular, layered web based platform for managing machine learning experiments on grid-based High Performance Computing infrastructures. The coupling of the communication services offered by the grid, with an administration layer and conventional web server programming, via a data synchronization utility, leads to the straightforward development of a web-based user interface that allows the monitoring and managing of diverse online distributed computing applications. It also introduces an experiment generation and monitoring tool particularly suitable for investigating machine learning in game playing. The platform is demonstrated with experiments for two different games.
This report has two objectives. First, we describe a set of the production distributed infrastructures currently available, so that the reader has a basic understanding of them. This includes explaining why each infrastructure was created and made available and how it has succeeded and failed. The set is not complete, but we believe it is representative. Second, we describe the infrastructures in terms of their use, which is a combination of how they were designed to be used and how users have found ways to use them. Applications are often designed and created with specific infrastructures in …
Existing attempts at utility computing revolve around two approaches. The first consists of proprietary solutions involving renting time on dedicated utility computing machines. The second requires the use of heavy, monolithic applications that are difficult to deploy, maintain, and use. We propose a distributed, community-oriented approach to utility computing. Our approach provides an infrastructure built on Web Services in which modular components are combined to create a seemingly simple, yet powerful system. The community-oriented nature generates an economic environment which results in …
A common feature across many science and engineering applications is the amount and diversity of data and computation that must be integrated to yield insights. Data sets are growing larger and becoming distributed; and their location, availability and properties are often time-dependent. Collectively, these characteristics give rise to dynamic distributed data-intensive applications. While "static" data applications have received significant attention, the characteristics, requirements, and software systems for the analysis of large volumes of dynamic, distributed data, and data-intensive app…
Research and applications in Machine Learning are limited by computational resources, while 1% of the world's electricity goes into calculating 34 billion billion SHA-256 hashes per second, four orders of magnitude more than the 200 petaflop power of the world's most powerful supercomputer. The work presented here describes how a simple soft fork on Bitcoin can adapt these incomparable resources to a global distributed computer. By creating an infrastructure and ledger fully compatible with blockchain technology, the hashes can be replaced with stochastic optimizations such as Deep Net trainin…
The LOw-Frequency ARray is a low-frequency radio interferometer composed by observational stations spread across Europe and it is the largest precursor of SKA in terms of effective area and generated data rates. In 2018, the Italian community officially joined LOFAR project, and it deployed a distributed computing and storage infrastructure dedicated to LOFAR data analysis. The infrastructure is based on 4 nodes distributed in different Italian locations and it offers services for pipelines execution, storage of final and intermediate results and support for the use of the software and infrast…
With weather becoming more extreme both in terms of longer dry periods and more severe rain events, municipal water networks are increasingly under pressure. The effects include damages to the pipes, flash floods on the streets and combined sewer overflows. Retrofitting underground infrastructure is very expensive, thus water infrastructure operators are increasingly looking to deploy IoT solutions that promise to alleviate the problems at a fraction of the cost. In this paper, we report on preliminary results from an ongoing joint research project, specifically on the design and evaluation of…
High computational time is one of the most important operational issues in centralized dynamic shared ridehailing services. To resolve this issue, we propose a distributed ride-matching system that is based on vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) and infrastructure to infrastructure (I2I) communication. The application on downtown Toronto road network demonstrated that the distributed system resulted in a speed-up of 125 times in terms of computational time and showed high scalability. Moreover, the service rate in the proposed system improved by 7% compared to the centralized. However, the central…
Modern deep learning systems like PyTorch and Tensorflow are able to train enormous models with billions (or trillions) of parameters on a distributed infrastructure. These systems require that the internal nodes have the same memory capacity and compute performance. Unfortunately, most organizations, especially universities, have a piecemeal approach to purchasing computer systems resulting in a heterogeneous infrastructure, which cannot be used to compute large models. The present work describes HetSeq, a software package adapted from the popular PyTorch package that provides the capability …
We describe our work in implementing a wide-area distributed file system for the NSF TeraGrid. The system, called XUFS, allows private distributed name spaces to be created for transparent access to personal files across over 9000 computer nodes. XUFS builds on many principles from prior distributed file systems research, but extends key design goals to support the workflow of computational science researchers. Specifically, XUFS supports file access from the desktop to the wide-area network seamlessly, survives transient disconnected operations robustly, and demonstrates comparable or better …
Multiple studies have illustrated the potential for dramatic societal, environmental and economic benefits from significant penetration of autonomous driving. However, all the current approaches to autonomous driving require the automotive manufacturers to shoulder the primary responsibility and liability associated with replacing human perception and decision making with automation, potentially slowing the penetration of autonomous vehicles, and consequently slowing the realization of the societal benefits of autonomous vehicles. We propose here a new approach to autonomous driving that will …

It also provides a systematic way to automate the use of resourcess, including HPC and distributed resources, and to make tasks easier to repeat by recording contextual information. To demonstrate this, we present three use cases where FabSim has enhanced our research productivity. These include simulating cerebrovascular bloodflow, modelling clay-polymer nanocomposites across multip…
Deep Learning (DL) has had an immense success in the recent past, leading to state-of-the-art results in various domains such as image recognition and natural language processing. One of the reasons for this success is the increasing size of DL models and the proliferation of vast amounts of training data being available. To keep on improving the performance of DL, increasing the scalability of DL systems is necessary. In this survey, we perform a broad and thorough investigation on challenges, techniques and tools for scalable DL on distributed infrastructures. This incorporates infrastructur…
Particle physics experiments rely extensively on computing and data services, making e-infrastructure an integral part of the research collaboration. Constructing and operating distributed computing can however be challenging for a smaller-scale collaboration. The Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) is a planned small-scale accelerator-based experiment to search for dark matter in the sub-GeV mass region. Finalizing the design of the detector relies on Monte-Carlo simulation of expected physics processes. A distributed computing pilot project was proposed to better utilize available resources …

The advances in data, computing and networking over the last two decades led to a shift in many application domains that includes machine learning on big data as a part of the scientific process, requiring new capabilities for integrated and distributed hardware and software infrastructure. This paper contributes a workflow-driven approach for dynamic data-driven application development on top of a new kind of networked Cyberinfrastructure called CHASE-CI. In particular, we present: 1) The architecture for CHASE-CI, a network of distributed fast GPU appliances for machine learning and storage …
Autonomous driving clouds provide essential services to support autonomous vehicles. Today these services include but not limited to distributed simulation tests for new algorithm deployment, offline deep learning model training, and High-Definition (HD) map generation. These services require infrastructure support including distributed computing, distributed storage, as well as heterogeneous computing. In this paper, we present the details of how we implement a unified autonomous driving cloud infrastructure, and how we support these services on top of this infrastructure.
High Performance Computing (HPC) is intrinsically linked to effective Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM). Cloud services and HPC have become key components in Department of Defense and corporate Information Technology competitive strategies in the global and commercial spaces. As a result, the reliance on consistent, reliable Data Center space is more critical than ever. The costs and complexity of providing quality DCIM are constantly being tested and evaluated by the United States Government and companies such as Google, Microsoft and Facebook. This paper will demonstrate a system …
Serverless computing is an emerging Cloud service model. It is currently gaining momentum as the next step in the evolution of hosted computing from capacitated machine virtualisation and microservices towards utility computing. The term "serverless" has become a synonym for the entirely resource-transparent deployment model of cloud-based event-driven distributed applications. This work investigates how adaptive event dispatching can improve serverless platform resource efficiency and contributes a novel approach that allows for better scaling and fitting of the platform's resource consumptio…
Financial markets are event- and data-driven to an extremely high degree. For making decisions and triggering actions stakeholders require notifications about significant events and reliable background information that meet their individual requirements in terms of timeliness, accuracy, and completeness. As one of Europe's leading providers of financial data and regulatory solutions vwd processes an average of 18 billion event notifications from 500+ data sources for 30 million symbols per day. Our large-scale distributed event-based systems handle daily peak rates of 1+ million event notifica…
One of the challenges currently problems in the use of cloud services is the task of designing of specialized data management systems. This is especially important for hybrid systems in which the data are located in public and private clouds. Implementation monitoring functions querying, scheduling and processing software must be properly implemented and is an integral part of the system. To provide these functions is proposed to use an object-relational mapping (ORM). The article devoted to presenting the approach of designing databases for information systems hosted in a hybrid cloud infrast…

Serverless computing is an emerging service model in distributed computing systems. The term captures cloud-based event-driven distributed application design and stems from its completely resource-transparent deployment model, i.e. serverless. This work thesisizes that adaptive event dispatching can improve current serverless platform resource efficiency by considering locality and dependencies. These design contemplations have also been formulated by Hendrickson et al., which identifies the requirement that "Serverless load balancers must make low-latency decisions while considering session, …

Computational Grids are emerging as new infrastructure for Internet-based parallel and distributed computing. They enable the sharing, exchange, discovery, and aggregation of resources distributed across multiple administrative domains, organizations and enterprises. To accomplish this, Grids need infrastructure that supports various services: security, uniform access, resource management, scheduling, application composition, computational economy, and accountability. Many Grid projects have developed technologies that provide many of these services with an exception of accountability. To over…

Although recent scaling up approaches to training deep neural networks have proven to be effective, the computational intensity of large and complex models, as well as the availability of large-scale datasets, require deep learning frameworks to utilize scaling out techniques. Parallelization approaches and distribution requirements are not considered in the preliminary designs of most available distributed deep learning frameworks, and most of them still are not able to perform effective and efficient fine-grained inter-node communication. We present Phylanx that has the potential to alleviat…
Earth Observation (EO) mining aims at supporting efficient access and exploration of petabyte-scale space- and airborne remote sensing archives that are currently expanding at rates of terabytes per day. A significant challenge is performing the analysis required by envisaged applications --- like for instance process mapping for environmental risk management --- in reasonable time. In this work, we address the problem of content-based image retrieval via example-based queries from EO data archives. In particular, we focus on the analysis of polarimetric SAR data, for which target decompositio…
This paper presents a system architecture to promote the development of smart transportation systems. Thanks to the use of distributed ledgers and related technologies, it is possible to create, store and share data generated by users through their sensors, while moving. In particular, IOTA and IPFS are used to store and certify data (and their related metadata) coming from sensors or by the users themselves. Ethereum is exploited as the smart contract platform that coordinates the data sharing and provisioning. The necessary privacy guarantees are provided by the usage of Zero Knowledge Proof…
We present a framework for a large-scale distributed eScience Artificial Intelligence search. Our approach is generic and can be used for many different problems. Unlike many other approaches, we do not require dedicated machines, homogeneous infrastructure or the ability to communicate between nodes. We give special consideration to the robustness of the framework, minimising the loss of effort even after total loss of infrastructure, and allowing easy verification of every step of the distribution process. In contrast to most eScience applications, the input data and specification of the pro…
Vizier is the de-facto blackbox and hyperparameter optimization service across Google, having optimized some of Google's largest products and research efforts. To operate at the scale of tuning thousands of users' critical systems, Google Vizier solved key design challenges in providing multiple different features, while remaining fully fault-tolerant. In this paper, we introduce Open Source (OSS) Vizier, a standalone Python-based interface for blackbox optimization and research, based on the Google-internal Vizier infrastructure and framework. OSS Vizier provides an API capable of defining an…
Today most applications continuously produce information under the form of streams, due to the advent of the means of collecting data. Sensors and social networks collect an immense variety and volume of data, from different real-life situations and at a considerable velocity. Increasingly, applications require processing of heterogeneous data streams from different sources together with large background knowledge. To use only the information on the data stream is not enough for many use cases. Semantic Complex Event Processing (CEP) systems have evolved from the classical rule-based CEP syste…
Scientific computing can in some sense be distilled to the execution of an application - or rather sets of applications which are combined into complex workflows. Due to the complexity and number both of scientific packages as well as computing platforms, delivering these applications to end users has always been a significant challenge through the grid era, and remains so in the cloud era. In this contribution we describe a platform for user-driven, continuous integration and delivery of research applications in a distributed environment - project CODE-RADE. Starting with 6 hypotheses describ…

Foggy is tailored for emerging domains such as 5G Networks and IoT, which demand resources and services to be distributed and located close to data sources and users following the Fog Computing paradigm. Foggy provides a platform for infrastructure owners and tenants (i.e., application providers) offering f…
This paper describes the use of a distributed cloud computing system for high-throughput computing (HTC) scientific applications. The distributed cloud computing system is composed of a number of separate Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) clouds that are utilized in a unified infrastructure. The distributed cloud has been in production-quality operation for two years with approximately 500,000 completed jobs where a typical workload has 500 simultaneous embarrassingly-parallel jobs that run for approximately 12 hours. We review the design and implementation of the system which is based on pre…
In an ideal distributed computing infrastructure, users would be able to use diverse distributed computing resources in a simple coherent way, with guaranteed security and efficient use of shared resources in accordance with the wishes of the owners of the resources. Our strategy for approaching this ideal is to first find the simplest structure within which these goals can plausibly be achieved. This structure, we find, is given by a particular recursive distributive lattice freely constructed from a presumed partially ordered set of all data in the infrastructure. Minor syntactic adjustments…
The paper suggests a new approach based on blockchain technologies and smart contracts to creation of a distributed system for managing provenance metadata, as well as access rights to data in distributed storages, which is fault-tolerant, safe and secure from the point of view of preservation of metadata records from accidental or intentional distortions. The implementation of the proposed approach is based on the permissioned blockchains and on the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain platform in conjunction with Hyperledger Composer.
We introduce Deep500: the first customizable benchmarking infrastructure that enables fair comparison of the plethora of deep learning frameworks, algorithms, libraries, and techniques. The key idea behind Deep500 is its modular design, where deep learning is factorized into four distinct levels: operators, network processing, training, and distributed training. Our evaluation illustrates that Deep500 is customizable (enables combining and benchmarking different deep learning codes) and fair (uses carefully selected metrics). Moreover, Deep500 is fast (incurs negligible overheads), verifiable …

Mapping all the neurons in the brain requires automatic reconstruction of entire cells from volume electron microscopy data. The flood-filling network (FFN) architecture has demonstrated leading performance for segmenting structures from this data. However, the training of the network is computationally expensive. In order to reduce the training time, we implemented synchronous and data-parallel distributed training using the Horovod library, which is different from the asynchronous training scheme used in the published FFN code. We demonstrated that our distributed training scaled well up to …
Distributed fog and edge applications communicate over unreliable networks and are subject to high communication delays. This makes using existing distributed coordination technologies from cloud applications infeasible, as they are built on the assumption of a highly reliable, low-latency datacenter network to achieve strict consistency with low overheads. To help implement configuration and state management for fog platforms and applications, we propose a novel decentralized approach that lets systems specify coordination strategies and membership for different sets of coordination data.
Analyzing large-scale graphs provides valuable insights in different application scenarios. While many graph processing systems working on top of distributed infrastructures have been proposed to deal with big graphs, the tasks of profiling and debugging their massive computations remain time consuming and error-prone. This paper presents GiViP, a visual profiler for distributed graph processing systems based on a Pregel-like computation model. GiViP captures the huge amount of messages exchanged throughout a computation and provides an interactive user interface for the visual analysis of the…
Blockchain technology provides an auditable and tamper-proof distributed storage infrastructure for information records. This can be leveraged to support distributed workflow management. Compared to proof-of-work consensus, popularized by Bitcoin and Ethereum, blockchains based on BFT (byzantine fault tolerance) ordering consensus trade scalability for immediacy and finality of consensus. This makes them easier to use as distribution infrastructure, as applications need not be adapted to deal with eventual consistency and delayed consensus of proof-of-work blockchains. Hence, applications such…

Autonomous vehicle safety and reliability are the paramount requirements when developing autonomous vehicles. These requirements are guaranteed by massive functional and performance tests. Conducting these tests on real vehicles is extremely expensive and time consuming, and thus it is imperative to develop a simulation platform to perform these tasks. For simulation, we can utilize the Robot Operating System (ROS) for data playback to test newly developed algorithms. However, due to the massive amount of simulation data, performing simulation on single machines is not practical. Hence, a high…
Recent developments in the industry of personal computing led to a greater number of the so-called edge devices. Such devices typically do not collaborate or foresee the possibility of collaboration to offer aggregated storage and computing capabilities. The concept of distributed file system (DFS) is not new to the field of distributed systems, in fact, it is widely used in dedicated infrastructures, for example, in cloud computing applications. In this work, we discuss reasonable assumptions for an environment composed of edge devices, the main design issues and implementation challenges of …
