Consider an Einstein orbifold $(M_0,g_0)$ of real dimension $2n$ having a singularity with orbifold group the cyclic group of order $n$ in ${\rm{SU}}(n)$ which is generated by an $n$th root of unity times the identity. Existence of a Ricci-flat Kähler ALE metric with this group at infinity was shown by Calabi. There is a natural "approximate" Einstein metric on the desingularization of $M_0$ obtained by replacing a small neighborhood of the singular point of the orbifold with a scaled and truncated Calabi metric. In this paper, we identify the first obstruction to perturbing this approximate Einstein metric to an actual Einstein metric. If $M_0$ is compact, we can use this to produce examples of Einstein orbifolds which do not admit any Einstein metric in a neighborhood of the natural approximate Einstein metric on the desingularization. In the case that $(M_0,g_0)$ is asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein and non-degenerate, we show that if the first obstruction vanishes, then there does in fact exist an asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein metric on the desingularization. We also obtain a non-existence result in the asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein case, provided that the obstruction does not vanish. This work extends a construction of Biquard in the case $n =2$, in which case the Calabi metric is also known as the Eguchi-Hanson metric, but there are some key points for which the higher-dimensional case differs.
We study Calabi-Yau 3-folds M_0 with a conical singularity x modelled on a Calabi-Yau cone V. We construct desingularizations of M_0, obtaining a 1-parameter family of compact, nonsingular Calabi-Yau 3-folds which has M_0 as the limit. The way we do is to choose an Asymptotically Conical Calabi-Yau 3-fold Y modelled on the same cone V, and then glue into M_0 at x after applying a homothety to Y. We then get a 1-parameter family of nearly Calabi-Yau 3-folds M_t depending on a small real variable t. For sufficiently small t, we show that the nearly Calabi-Yau structures on M_t can be deformed to…
This paper is a follow-up to an earlier paper math.DG/0410260 on desingularizations of Calabi-Yau 3-folds with a conical singularity. In math.DG/0410260 we study Calabi-Yau 3-folds M_0 with a conical singularity at x modelled on some Calabi-Yau cone V, and construct a desingularization of M_0 by gluing in an Asymptotically Conical (AC) Calabi-Yau 3-fold Y to M_0 at x. In this paper, we shall investigate a similar desingularization problem on special Lagrangian (SL) 3-folds in the corresponding Calabi-Yau 3-folds. More precisely, suppose M_0 is now a Calabi-Yau 3-fold with finitely many conical…
We find new obstructions to the desingularization of compact Einstein orbifolds by smooth Einstein metrics. These new obstructions, specific to the compact situation, raise the question of whether a compact Einstein $4$-orbifold which is limit of Einstein metrics bubbling out Eguchi-Hanson metrics has to be Kähler. We then test these obstructions to discuss if it is possible to produce a Ricci-flat but not Kähler metric by the most promising desingularization configuration proposed by Page in 1981. We identify $84$ obstructions which, once compared to the $57$ degrees of freedom, indicate that…
A natural approach to the construction of nearly G2 manifolds lies in resolving nearly G2 spaces with isolated conical singularities by gluing in asymptotically conical G2 manifolds modelled on the same cone. If such a resolution exits, one expects there to be a family of nearly G2 manifolds, whose endpoint is the original nearly G2 conifold and whose parameter is the scale of the glued in asymptotically conical G2 manifold. We show that in many cases such a curve does not exist. The non-existence result is based on a topological result for asymptotically conical G2 manifolds: if the rate of t…
We study the question of the integrability of Einstein deformations and relate it to the question of the desingularization of Einstein metrics. Our main application is a negative answer to the long-standing question of whether or not every Einstein $4$-orbifold (which is an Einstein metric space in a synthetic sense) is limit of smooth Einstein $4$-manifolds. We more precisely show that spherical and hyperbolic $4$-orbifolds with the simplest singularities cannot be Gromov-Hausdorff limits of smooth Einstein $4$-metrics without relying on previous integrability assumptions. For this, we analyz…
In this second article, we prove that any desingularization in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense of an Einstein orbifold is the result of a gluing-perturbation procedure that we develop. This builds on our first paper where we proved that a Gromov-Hausdorff convergence implied a much stronger convergence in suitable weighted Hölder spaces, in which the analysis of the present paper takes place. The description of Einstein metrics as the result of a gluing-perturbation procedure also sheds light on the local structure of the moduli space of Einstein metrics near its boundary. More importantly here, we…
A theorem of Anderson and Bando-Kasue-Nakajima from 1989 states that to compactify the set of normalized Einstein metrics with a lower bound on the volume and an upper bound on the diameter in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense, one has to add singular spaces called Einstein orbifolds, and the singularities form as blow-downs of Ricci-flat ALE spaces. This raises some natural issues, in particular: can all Einstein orbifolds be Gromov-Hausdorff limits of smooth Einstein manifolds? Can we describe more precisely the smooth Einstein metrics close to a given singular one? In this first paper, we prove th…
We find new examples of compact Spin(7)-manifolds using a construction of Joyce. The essential ingredient in Joyce's construction is a Calabi-Yau 4-orbifold with particular singularities admitting an antiholomorphic involution, which fixes the singularities. We search the class of well-formed quasismooth hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces for suitable Calabi-Yau 4-orbifolds. We find that different hypersurfaces within the same family of Calabi-Yau 4-orbifolds may result in different Spin(7)-manifolds.
Let S be a K3 surface that admits a non-symplectic automorphism $ρ$ of order 3. We divide $S\times \mathbb{P}^1$ by $ρ\timesψ$ where $ψ$ is an automorphism of order 3 of $\mathbb{P}^1$. There exists a threefold ramified cover of a partial crepant resolution of the quotient that is a Calabi-Yau orbifold. We compute the Euler characteristic of our examples and obtain values ranging from 30 to 219.

Given an integer b and a finitely presented group G we produce a compact symplectic six-manifold with c_1 = 0, b_2 > b, b_3 > b and fundamental group G. In the simply-connected case we can also arrange for b_3 = 0; in particular these examples are not diffeomorphic to Kähler manifolds with c_1 = 0. The construction begins with a certain orientable four-dimensional hyperbolic orbifold assembled from right-angled 120-cells. The twistor space of the hyperbolic orbifold is a symplectic Calabi-Yau orbifold; a crepant resolution of this last orbifold produces a smooth symplectic manifold with the re…
We algebraically prove K-stability of polarized Calabi-Yau varieties and canonically polarized varieties with mild singularities. In particular, the} "stable varieties" introduced by Kollar-Shepherd-Barron and Alexeev, which form compact moduli space, are proven to be K-stable although it is well known that they are \textit{not} necessarily asymptotically (semi)stable. As a consequence, we have orbifold counterexamples, to the folklore conjecture "K-stability implies asymptotic stability". They have Kahler-Einstein (orbifold) metrics so the result of Donaldson does not hold for orbifolds.

Given a compact constant scalar curvature Kaehler orbifold, with nontrivial holomorphic vector fields, whose singularities admit a local ALE Kaehler Ricci-flat resolution, we find sufficient conditions on the position of the singular points to ensure the existence of a global constant scalar curvature Kaehler desingularization. This generalizes the results previously obtained by the first author with F. Pacard. A series of explicit examples is discussed.
This paper is concerned with the existence of constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics on blow ups at finitely many points of compact manifolds which already carry constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics. We also consider the desingularization of isolated quotient singularities of compact orbifolds which already carry constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics.
The Kummer Construction of Calabi-Yau and Hyper-Kähler Metrics on the $K3$ Surface, and Large Families of Volume Non-collapsed Limiting Compact Hyper-Kähler Orbifolds
In 1985, physicists Dixon, Harvey, Vafa and Witten studied string theories on Calabi-Yau orbifolds (cf. [DHVW]). An interesting discovery in their paper was the prediction that a certain physicist's Euler number of the orbifold must be equal to the Euler number of any of its crepant resolutions. This was soon related to the so called McKay correspondence in mathematics (cf. [McK]). Later developments include stringy Hodge numbers (cf. [Z], [BD]), mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau orbifolds (cf. [Ro]), and most recently the Gromov-Witten invariants of symplectic orbifolds (cf. [CR1-2]). One common …
We introduce a category of rigid geometries on singular spaces which are leaf spaces of foliations and are considered as leaf manifolds. We single out a special category $\mathfrak F_0$ of leaf manifolds containing the orbifold category as a full subcategory. Objects of $\mathfrak F_0$ may have non-Hausdorff topology unlike the orbifolds. The topology of some objects of $\mathfrak F_0$ does not satisfy the separation axiom $T_0$. It is shown that for every ${\mathcal N}\in Ob(\mathfrak F_0)$ a rigid geometry $ζ$ on $\mathcal N$ admits a desingularization. Moreover, for every such $\mathcal N$ …
We consider SU(2)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on manifolds of the form $M\times S^3/Γ$, where $M$ is a smooth manifold and $S^3/Γ$ is a three-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein orbifold. We obtain new quiver gauge theories on $M$ whose quiver bundles are based on the affine ADE Dynkin diagram associated to $Γ$. We relate them to those arising through translationally-invariant dimensional reduction over the associated Calabi-Yau cones $C(S^3/Γ)$ which are based on McKay quivers and ADHM matrix models, and to those arising through SU(2)-equivariant dimensional reduction over …
