Simulating quantum nonlocality and steering requires augmenting pre-shared randomness with non-vanishing communication cost. This prompts the question of how one may provide such an operational characterization for the quantumness of correlations due even to unentangled states. Here we show that for a certain class of states, such quantumness can be pointed out by superlocality, the requirement for a larger dimension of the pre-shared randomness to simulate the correlations than that of the quantum state that generates them. This provides an approach to define the nonclassicality of local multipartite correlations in convex operational theories.
Numerous inequalities involving moments of integrated intensities and revealing nonclassicality and entanglement in bipartite optical fields are derived using the majorization theory, non-negative polynomials, the matrix approach, as well as the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. Different approaches for deriving these inequalities are compared. Using the experimental photocount histogram generated by a weak noisy twin beam monitored by a photon-number-resolving iCCD camera the performance of the derived inequalities is compared. A basic set of ten inequalities suitable for monitoring the entanglement…
We consider experimental routes to determine the nonclassical degree of states of a field mode. We adopt a distance-type criterium based on the Hilbert-Schmidt metric to quantify the nonclassicality. The concept of nonclassical degree is extended for states of bipartite systems, allowing us to discuss a possible connection between nonclassicality and entanglement measures.
A bipartite state is classical with respect to party $A$ if and only if party $A$ can perform nondisruptive local state identification (NDLID) by a projective measurement. Motivated by this we introduce a class of quantum correlation measures for an arbitrary bipartite state. The measures utilize the general Schatten $p$-norm to quantify the amount of departure from the necessary and sufficient condition of classicality of correlations provided by the concept of NDLID. We show that for the case of Hilbert-Schmidt norm, i.e. $p=2$, a closed formula is available for an arbitrary bipartite state.…
We argue that the essence of nonclassicality of a bipartite correlation is a positive signal deficit-- the communication cost excess over the available signaling. By this criterion, while violations of Bell-type and contextuality inequalities are necessarily non-classical, some violations of the Leggett-Garg inequality are classical. Further, signaling tends to diminish nonclassical properties, such as intrinsic randomness, no-cloning, complementarity, etc. Signal deficit is shown to have its ultimate origin in intrinsic randomness. A possible analogy of nonclassicality to the metamathematical…
Continuous variable entanglement is a manifestation of nonclassicality of quantum states. In this paper we attempt to analyze whether and under which conditions nonclassicality can be used as an entanglement criterion. We adopt the well-accepted definition of nonclassicality in the form of lack of well-defined positive Glauber Sudarshan P-function describing the state. After demonstrating that the classicality of subsystems is not sufficient for the nonclassicality of the overall state to be identifiable with entanglement, we focus on Gaussian states and find specific local unitary transformat…
We investigate the performance of a certain nonclassicality identifier, expressed via integrated second-order intensity moments of optical fields, in revealing bipartite entanglement of quantum-optical frequency combs (QOFCs), which are generated in both spontaneous and stimulated parametric down-conversion processes. We show that, by utilizing that nonclassicality identifier, one can well identify the entanglement of the QOFC directly from the experimentally measured intensity moments without invoking any state reconstruction techniques or homodyne detection. Moreover, we demonstrate that the…
Nonclassical properties of correlations-- like unpredictability, no-cloning and uncertainty-- are known to follow from two assumptions: nonlocality and no-signaling. For two-input-two-output correlations, we derive these properties from a single, unified assumption: namely, the excess of the communication cost over the signaling in the correlation. This is relevant to quantum temporal correlations, resources to simulate quantum correlations and extensions of quantum mechanics. We generalize in the context of such correlations the nonclassicality result for nonlocal-nonsignaling correlations (M…
We consider the classical correlations that two observers can extract by measurements on a bipartite quantum state, and we discuss how they are related to the quantum mutual information of the state. We show with several examples how complementarity gives rise to a gap between the quantum and the classical correlations, and we relate our quantitative finding to the so-called classical correlation locked in a quantum state. We derive upper bounds for the sum of classical correlation obtained by measurements in different mutually unbiased bases and we show that the complementarity gap is also pr…
We use the exact calculation of the quantum mechanical, temporal characteristic function $χ(η)$ and the degree of second-order coherence $g^{(2)}(τ)$ for a single-mode, degenerate parametric amplifier for a system in the Gaussian state, viz., a displaced-squeezed thermal state, to study the different criteria for nonclassicality. In particular, we contrast criteria that involve only one-time functions of the dynamical system, for instance, the quasiprobability distribution $P(β)$ of the Glauber-Sudarshan coherent or P-representation of the density of state and the Mandel $Q_{M}(τ)$ parameter, …
Dynamics of atom-field correlations and single-mode nonclassicalities present in the resonant Jaynes-Cummings model are investigated using negativity and entanglement potential for a set of initial states. The study has revealed the interplay between three different types of nonclassicality present in the model and established that the nonclassicality is continuously exchanged between the field and atom through the atom-field correlations. Further, it is observed that the entanglement potential does not capture all the single-mode nonclassicality and there exists some residual nonclassicality …
In the nonsignaling framework, nonclassicality in correlation arising from two spatially separated input-output devices gets manifested, solely, through its \emph{nonlocal} behavior. Study of correlations based on this said feature is commonly known as local-nonlocal paradigm. While in two-party scenario correlations can be of only two types either local or nonlocal, the situation gets more involved for multi-party scenario, \emph{e.g.,} for tripartite scenario, correlations can be of three types: fully local, two-way local, and genuinely nonlocal. Nonsignaling correlations having quantum real…
A bipartite quantum system in a mixed state can exhibit nonclassical correlations, which can go beyond quantum entanglement. While quantum discord is the standard measure of quantifying such general quantum correlations, the nonclassicality can be determined by simpler means via the measurement of witness operators. We experimentally construct a positive map to witness nonclassicality of two qubits in an NMR system. The map can be decomposed so that a single run of an experiment on an ensemble of spins suffices to detect the nonclassicality in the state, if present. We let the state evolve in …
Most of known multipartite Bell inequalities involve correlation functions for all subsystems. They are useless for entangled states without such correlations. We give a method of derivation of families of Bell inequalities for N parties, which involve, e.g., only (N-1)-partite correlations, but still are able to detect proper N-partite entanglement. We present an inequality which reveals five-partite entanglement despite only four-partite correlations. Classes of inequalities introduced here can be put into a handy form of a single non-linear inequality. An example is given of an N qubit stat…
We investigate the nonclassicality of an open quantum system using Leggett-Garg inequality (LGI) which test the correlations of a single system measured at different times. Violation of LGI implies nonclassical behavior of the open system. We investigate the violation of the Leggett-Garg inequality for a two level system (qubit) spontaneously decaying under a general non-Markovian dissipative environment. Our results are exact as we have calculated the two-time correlation functions exactly for a wide range of system-environment parameters beyond Born-Markov regime.
Nonclassicality of temporal correlations pertaining to noncommutative sequential measurements is defined through the violation of macrorealistic inequalities, known as Leggett-Garg inequalities (LGI). We investigate the energy cost of the process associated with the Leggett-Garg test in the context of noiseless and Markovian noise for arbitrary initial states. We prove that in noiseless and in certain noisy scenarios, the maximal violations of LGI under the energy constraint occurs when the average energy of the process is equal to the negative of the energy of the initial state. Such a depend…
We devise a method to certify nonclassical features via correlations of phase-space distributions by unifying the notions of quasiprobabilities and matrices of correlation functions. Our approach complements and extends recent results that were based on Chebyshev's inequality [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 133601 (2020)]. The method developed here correlates arbitrary phase-space functions at arbitrary points in phase space, including multimode scenarios and higher-order correlations. Furthermore, our approach provides necessary and sufficient nonclassicality criteria, applies to phase-space functions…
For a bipartite local quantum correlation, superlocality refers to the requirement for a larger dimension of the random variable in the classical simulation protocol than that of the quantum states that generate the correlations. In this work, we consider the classical simulation of local tripartite quantum correlations $P$ among three parties $A, B$ and $C$. If at least one of the bipartitions $(A|BC)$, $(B|AC)$ and $(C|AB)$ is superlocal, then $P$ is said to be absolutely superlocal, whereas if all three bipartitions are superlocal, then $P$ is said to be genuinely superlocal. We present spe…
The incoherent dynamical properties of open quantum systems are generically attributed to an ongoing correlation between the system and its environment. Here, we propose a novel way to assess the nature of these system-environment correlations by examining the system dynamics alone. Our approach is based on the possibility or impossibility to simulate open-system dynamics with Hamiltonian ensembles. As we show, such (im)possibility to simulate is closely linked to the system-environment correlations. We thus define the nonclassicality of open-system dynamics in terms of the nonexistence of a H…
In this article, we provide theoretical support for the use of geometric measures of nonclassicality as a general tool to identify quantum phase transitions. We argue that divergences in the susceptibility of any geometric measure of nonclassicality are sufficient conditions to identify phase transitions at arbitrary temperature. This establishes that geometric measures of nonclassicality, in any quantum resource theory, are generic tools to investigate phase transitions in quantum systems. At zero temperature, we show that geometric measures of quantum coherence are especially useful for iden…
We introduce the measures, Bell discord (BD) and Mermin discord (MD), to characterize bipartite quantum correlations in the context of nonsignaling (NS) polytopes. These measures divide the full NS polytope into four regions depending on whether BD and/or MD is zero. This division of the NS polytope allows us to obtain a 3-decomposition that any bipartite box with two binary inputs and two binary outputs can be decomposed into Popescu-Rohrlich (PR) box, a maximally local box, and a local box with BD and MD equal to zero. BD and MD quantify two types of nonclassicality of correlations arising f…
We develop a nonclassicality criterion for the interference of three delayed, but otherwise identical, light fields in a three-mode Bell interferometer. We do so by comparing the prediction of quantum mechanics with those of a classical framework in which independent sources emit electric fields with random phases. In particular, we evaluate third-order correlations among output intensities as a function of the delays, and show how the presence of a correlation revival for small delays cannot be explained by the classical model of light. The observation of a revival is thus a nonclassicality s…
In spite of its fundamental importance in quantum science and technology, the experimental certification of nonclassicality is still a challenging task, especially in realistic scenarios where losses and noise imbue the system. Here, we present the first experimental implementation of the recently introduced phase-space inequalities for nonclassicality certification, which conceptually unite phase-space representations with correlation conditions. We demonstrate the practicality and sensitivity of this approach by studying nonclassicality of a family of noisy and lossy quantum states of light.…
The ongoing exploration of the ambiguous boundary between the quantum and the classical worlds has spurred substantial developments in quantum science and technology. Recently, the nonclassicality of dynamical processes has been proposed from a quantum-information-theoretic perspective, in terms of witnessing nonclassical correlations with Hamiltonian ensemble simulations. To acquire insights into the quantum-dynamical mechanism of the process nonclassicality, here we propose to investigate the nonclassicality of the electron spin free-induction-decay process associated with an NV$^-$ center. …
Superradiance, i.e., spontaneous emission of coherent radiation by an ensemble of identical two-level atoms in collective states introduced by Dicke in 1954, is one of the enigmatic problems of quantum optics. The startling gist is that even though the atoms have no dipole moment they radiate with increased intensity in particular directions. Following the advances in our understanding of superradiant emission by atoms in entangled $W$ states we examine the quantum statistical properties of superradiance. Such investigations require the system to have at least two excitations as one needs to e…
Characterizing genuine quantum resources and determining operational rules for their manipulation are crucial steps to appraise possibilities and limitations of quantum technologies. Two such key resources are nonclassicality, manifested as quantum superposition between reference states of a single system, and entanglement, capturing quantum correlations among two or more subsystems. Here we present a general formalism for the conversion of nonclassicality into multipartite entanglement, showing that a faithful reversible transformation between the two resources is always possible within a pre…
Bell's theorem shows that our intuitive understanding of causation must be overturned in light of quantum correlations. Nevertheless, quantum mechanics does not permit signalling and hence a notion of cause remains. Understanding this notion is not only important at a fundamental level, but also for technological applications such as key distribution and randomness expansion. It has recently been shown that a useful way to decide which classical causal structures could give rise to a given set of correlations is to use entropy vectors. These are vectors whose components are the entropies of al…
Measurements serve as the intermediate communication layer between the quantum world and our classical perception. So, the question which measurements efficiently extract information from quantum systems is of central interest. Using quantum steering as a nonclassical phenomenon, we show that there are instances, where the results of all two-outcome measurements can be explained in a classical manner, while the results of some three-outcome measurements cannot. This points at the important role of the number of outcomes in revealing the nonclassicality hidden in a quantum system. Moreover, our…
Deep insight can be gained into the nature of nonclassical correlations by studying the quantum operations that create them. Motivated by this we propose a measure of nonclassicality of a quantum operation utilizing the relative entropy to quantify its commutativity with the completely dephasing operation. We show that our measure of nonclassicality is a sum of two independent contributions, the generating power -- its ability to produce nonclassical states out of classical ones, and the distinguishing power -- its usefulness to a classical observer for distinguishing between classical and non…
This thesis explores ways in which quantum channels and correlations (of both classical and quantum types) manifest themselves, and also studies the interplay between these two aspects in various physical settings. Quantum channels represent all possible evolutions of states allowed by quantum mechanics while correlations are intrinsic (nonlocal) properties of composite systems. There are four main problems that are addressed (i) the role played by initial system-bath correlations on the subsystem dynamics of an open quantum system, (ii) computation of correlations for two-qubit X-states, (iii…
Nonclassicality filters provide a universal method to visualize the nonclassicality of arbitrary quantum states of light through negativities of a regularized Glauber-Sudarshan $P$ function, also denoted as nonclassicality quasiprobability. Such filters are introduced and analyzed for optimizing the experimental certification of nonclassical effects. An analytic filter is constructed which preserves the full information on the quantum state. For balanced homodyne detection, the number of data points is analyzed to get the negativities of the nonclassicality quasiprobability with high statistic…
We report two fundamental experiments on three-level quantum systems (qutrits). The first one tests the simplest task for which quantum mechanics provides an advantage with respect to classical physics. The quantum advantage is certified by the violation of Wright's inequality, the simplest classical inequality violated by quantum mechanics. In the second experiment, we obtain contextual correlations by sequentially measuring pairs of compatible observables on a qutrit, and show the violation of Klyachko et al.'s inequality, the most fundamental noncontextuality inequality violated by qutrits.…
The state disturbance induced by locally measuring a quantum system yields a signature of nonclassical correlations beyond entanglement. Here we present a detailed study of such correlations for two-qubit mixed states. To overcome the asymmetry of quantum discord and the unfaithfulness of measurement-induced disturbance (severely overestimating quantum correlations), we propose an ameliorated measurement-induced disturbance as nonclassicality indicator, optimized over joint local measurements, and we derive its closed expression for relevant two-qubit states. We study its analytical relation w…
Quantum correlations forms a subset of the set of nonsignaling boxes. This allows us to characterize quantum correlations as a convex combination of the extremal boxes of the nonsignaling polytope which are Popescu-Rohrlich boxes (maximally nonlocal boxes) and local deterministic boxes. There exists multiple decomposition of quantum correlations in the context of the nonsignaling polytope. I find that the existence of Popescu-Rohrlich box decomposition for local boxes associates two notions of discord which capture nonclassicality of quantum correlations originating from Bell nonlocality and E…
One of the central problems in quantum theory is to characterize, detect, and quantify quantumness in terms of classical strategies. Dephasing processes, caused by non-dissipative information exchange between quantum systems and environments, provides a natural platform for this purpose, as they control the quantum-to-classical transition. Recently, it has been shown that dephasing dynamics itself can exhibit (non)classical traits, depending on the nature of the system-environment correlations and the related (im)possibility to simulate these dynamics with Hamiltonian ensembles---the classical…
The significance of photon addition in engineering the single- and two-mode (bipartite correlations) nonclassical properties of a quantum state is investigated. Specifically, we analyzed the behavior of the Wigner function of two quasi-Werner states theoretically constructed by superposing two normalized bipartite $m$-photon added coherent states. This allowed us to quantify the amount of nonclassicality present in the quantum states using Wigner logarithmic negativity (WLN), while quantum correlations are measured in terms of concurrence, entanglement of formation, and quantum discord. The WL…

We study, in theory and experiment, the quantum properties of correlated light fields measured with click-counting detectors providing incomplete information on the photon statistics. We establish a correlation parameter for the conditional statistics, and we derive the corresponding nonclassicality criteria for detecting conditional quantum correlations. Classical bounds for Pearson's correlation parameter are formulated that allow us, once they are violated, to determine nonclassical correlations via the joint statistics. On the one hand, we demonstrate nonclassical correlations in terms of …
We study the open system dynamics of a circuit QED model operating in the ultrastrong coupling regime. If the resonator is pumped periodically in time the underlying classical system is chaotic. Indeed, the periodically driven Jaynes-Cummings model in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation resembles a Duffing oscillator which in the classical limit is a well-known example of a chaotic system. Detection of the field quadrature of the output field acts as an effective position measurement of the oscillator. We address how such detection affects the quantum chaotic evolution in this bipartite system.…

Quantum features of correlated optical modes define a major aspect of the nonclassicality in quantized radiation fields. However, the phase-sensitive detection of a two-mode light field is restricted to interferometric setups and local intensity measurements. Even the full reconstruction of the quantum state of a single radiation mode relies on such detection layouts and the preparation of a well-defined reference light field. In this work, we establish the notion of the essential quantum correlations of two-mode light fields. It refers to those quantum correlations which are measurable by a g…
We introduce an algebraic measure of correlations in bipartite quantum systems. The proposed quantity, called maximal mutual correlation, provides the information how much a given state differs from the product state of its marginals. In contrast to the entanglement or quantum discord, maximal mutual correlation can be non - zero for some classically correlated quantum states.
We determine the incoherent spectrum, squeezing properties and second-order correlation function of the collective atomic degrees of freedom in absorptive optical bistability. This is accomplished via a linearized Fokker-Planck equation in the positive P representation, guided by the analysis of [H. J. Carmichael, Phys. Rev. A 33, 3262 (1986)] which does not resort to adiabatic elimination. We focus on the regimes of weak and strong intracavity excitation, addressing the good-cavity and bad-cavity limits as well as the limit of collective strong coupling. Adiabatic elimination of the intracavi…
Monogamy of bipartite correlations leads, for arbitrary pure multi-qubit states, to simple conditions able to indicate various types of multipartite entanglement by being capable to exclude the possibility of k-separability.
How can we characterize different types of correlation between quantum systems? Since correlations cannot be generated locally, we take any real function of a multipartite state which cannot increase under local operations to measure a correlation. Correlation measures that can be expressed as an optimization of a linear combination of entropies are particularly useful, since they can often be interpreted operationally. We systematically study such optimized linear entropic functions, and by enforcing monotonicity under local processing we identify four cones of correlation measures for bipart…
The Hilbert space formalism of quantum theory manifests a map between bipartite states and time evolutions, known as Jamiolkowski isomorphism. We extend this map in a physical setting to prove the equality of spatial correlations in bipartite systems and temporal correlations in local systems. We show that these correlations can be observed using weak measurements. This result has several practical and conceptual implications such as manifestation of state independent decoherence, the correspondence between Bell and Leggett-Garg inequalities, multipartite systems, the statistical properties of…
In this work we introduce a nonlinear witness that is a sufficient condition for detecting the vanishment of quantum correlation of bipartite states. Our result directly generalizes the result of [J. Maziero, R. M. Serra, arXiv:1012.3075] to arbitrary dimension based on the Bloch representation of density matrices.
Localized radiation sources are analyzed with respect to the relation of nonclassicality and quantum entanglement of the emitted light. The source field parts of the radiation emitted in different directions are closely related to each other. As a consequence, nonclassicality of the light fields in one direction directly implies entanglement of the field modes in different directions. This implication can be extended to multipartite-entanglement and multi-time quantum correlations. Given that a nonclassical effect is observed, our approach explicitly yields the multipartite entanglement witnes…
Superquantum ("PR-box") correlations, though designed to respect relativistic causality, violate relativistic causality in the classical limit. Generalizing to all stronger-than-quantum bipartite correlations, I derive Tsirelson's bound from the axioms of nonlocality, relativistic causality and the existence of a classical limit. This derivation of Tsirelson's bound does not assume quantum mechanics yet suggests how Hilbert space is implicit in quantum correlations.
