We present HI observations of four giant low surface brightness (GLSB) galaxies UGC 1378, UGC 1922, UGC 4422 and UM 163 using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT). We include HI results on UGC 2936, UGC 6614 and Malin 2 from literature. HI is detected from all the galaxies and the extent is roughly twice the optical size; in UM 163, HI is detected along a broken disk encircling the optical galaxy. We combine our results with those in literature to further understand these systems. The main results are the following: (1) The peak HI surface densities in GLSB galaxies are several times 10^21 cm^{-2} . The HI mass is between 0.3 - 4 x 10^10 M_Sun/yr, dynamical mass ranges from a few times 10^11 M_Sun/yr to a few times 10^12 M_Sun/yr. (2) The rotation curves of GLSB galaxies are flat to the outermost measured point with rotation velocities of the seven GLSB galaxies being between 225 and 432 km s^{-1}. (3) Recent star formation traced by near-ultraviolet emission in five GLSB galaxies in our sample appears to be located in rings around the galaxy centre. We suggest that this could be due to a stochastic burst of star formation at one location in the galaxy being propagated along a ring over a rotation period. (4) The Hi is correlated with recent star formation in five of the seven GLSB galaxies.
We present a low-frequency imaging study of an extended sample of X-shaped radio sources using the Giant Metrewave radio telescope (GMRT) at two frequencies (610 and 240 MHz). The sources were drawn from a Very Large Array FIRST-selected sample and extends an initial GMRT study at the same frequencies, of 12 X-shaped radio galaxies predominantly from the 3CR catalog (Lal & Rao 2007). Both the intensity maps and spectral index maps of the 16 newly observed sources are presented. With the combined sample of 28 X-shaped radio sources, we found no systematic differences in the spectral properties …
The upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) has been used to map the cluster A2065 at z = 0.0726. We report the discovery of a remnant radio galaxy at the peripheral cluster region. The spatially resolved radio emission from the remnant radio galaxy shows an elongated, bar-shaped structure, whose size is $\approx$ 52$^{\prime\prime}$ $\times$ 110$^{\prime\prime}$ ($\simeq$ 72 $\times$ 152 kpc$^2$). Our study with the multiwavelength GMRT data and \textit{Chandra} data shows that across the remnant radio galaxy there is a hint of a surface-brightness edge in the hot X-ray gas. We detect…
We report a $\approx 400$-hour Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) search for HI 21 cm emission from star-forming galaxies at $z = 1.18-1.39$ in seven fields of the DEEP2 Galaxy Survey. Including data from an earlier 60-hour GMRT observing run, we co-added the HI 21 cm emission signals from 2,841 blue star-forming galaxies that lie within the full-width at half-maximum of the GMRT primary beam. This yielded a $5.0σ$ detection of the average HI 21 cm signal from the 2,841 galaxies at an average redshift $\langle z \rangle \approx 1.3$, only the second detection of HI 21 cm emission at $z\ge1…
We have used the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope to map the Coma cluster of galaxies at 250-500 MHz and 1050-1450 MHz bands. These 6.26 arcsec and 2.18 arcsec resolutions observations allow detailed radio structures to be determined of all detected radio sources that show both discrete pointlike and extended morphologies. We present images of a subset of 32 brightest (flux density >= 30 mJy) and dominant sources, and several sources show discrete pointlike radio morphologies. We find the steepening of the spectra consistent with synchrotron cooling in the majority of sources and the m…
Interferometric observations of HI in galaxies played a pivotal role in studies of nearby galaxies. Compared to single-dish observation, it provides resolved distribution of gas in galaxies with unprecedented resolution. Several extensive HI surveys of nearby galaxies have been performed in the past; however, most of them consist of less than 100 galaxies due to individual efforts. On the other hand, present-day archives of the radio telescopes include data for at least several hundred galaxies. To utilize these data sets to their full potential, we construct a sample including all galaxies ob…
We report the discovery of one of the largest and most distant Giant Radio Galaxy (GRG) in the Lynx field which was discovered using deep Giant Metre-wave Radio Telescope (GMRT) 150 MHz observations. The core is detected at 150 MHz and also in the VLA FIRST survey. Spectroscopic observations carried out using the IUCAA Giravali Observatory(IGO) provided a redshift value of 0.57. This redshift was later confirmed with data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (Data Release 12). The angular size of the GRG is 5.5 arcmin and at the redshift of 0.57, its linear size is 2.2 Mpc. At this high redshift,…
We report optical observations of TGSS J1054+5832, a candidate high-redshift ($z=4.8\pm2$) steep-spectrum radio galaxy, in $r$ and $i$ bands using the faint object spectrograph and camera mounted on 3.6-m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT). The source previously detected at 150 MHz from Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope and at 1420 MHz from Very Large Array has a known counterpart in near-infrared bands with $K$-band magnitude of AB 22. The source is detected in $i$-band with AB$24.3\pm0.2$ magnitude in the DOT images presented here. The source remains undetected in the $r$-band image at a 2.5$σ$…
Low frequency observations at 325 and 610 MHz have been carried out for two "radio-loud" Seyfert galaxies, NGC4235 and NGC4594 (Sombrero galaxy), using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The 610 MHz total intensity and 325-610 MHz spectral index images of NGC4235 tentatively suggest the presence of a "relic" radio lobe, most likely from a previous episode of AGN activity. This makes NGC4235 only the second known Seyfert galaxy after Mrk6 to show signatures of episodic activity. Spitzer and Herschel infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling using the clumpyDREAM code predic…
We present the observations and first results from the FIGGS2 survey. FIGGS2 is an extension of the earlier Faint Irregular Galaxies GMRT survey (FIGGS) towards faint luminosity end. The sample consists of 20 galaxies of which 15 were detected in HI 21cm line using the Giant Meter-wave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The median blue band magnitude of our sample is ~ -11.6, which is more than one magnitude fainter than earlier FIGGS survey. From our GMRT observations we find that, for many of our sample galaxies, the HI disks are offset from their optical disks. The HI diameters of the FIGGS2 galaxies …
We present for the first time a study of peculiar giant radio galaxy (GRG) J223301+131502 using deep multi-frequency radio observations from GMRT (323, 612, and 1300 MHz) and LOFAR (144 MHz) along with optical spectroscopic observations with the WHT~4.2m optical telescope. Our observations have firmly established its redshift of 0.09956 and unveiled its exceptional jet structure extending more than $\sim$ 200 kpc leading to a peculiar kink structure of $\sim$ 100 kpc. We measure the overall size of this GRG to be $\sim$ 1.83 Mpc; it exhibits lobes without any prominent hotspots and closely res…
LOFAR observations at 144 MHz have revealed large-scale radio sources in the unrelaxed galaxy cluster Abell 1132. The cluster hosts diffuse radio emission on scales of $\sim$650 kpc near the cluster center and a head-tail (HT) radio galaxy, extending up to 1 Mpc, South of the cluster center. The central diffuse radio emission is not seen in NVSS, FIRST, WENSS, nor in C & D array VLA observations at 1.4 GHz, but is detected in our follow-up GMRT observations at 325 MHz. Using LOFAR and GMRT data, we determine the spectral index of the central diffuse emission to be $α=-1.75\pm0.19$ ($S\proptoν^…
The formation scenario for giant low surface brightness (gLSB) galaxies with discs as large as 100 kpc still remains unclear. These stellar systems are rare and very hard to observe, therefore a detailed insight on every additional object helps to understand their nature. Here we present a detailed observational study of the gLSB UGC 1922 performed using deep optical imaging and spectroscopic observations combined with archival ultraviolet data. We derived spatially resolved properties of stellar and ionized gas kinematics and characteristics of stellar populations and interstellar medium. We …
We provide evidence that UGC1382, long believed to be a passive elliptical galaxy, is actually a giant low surface brightness (GLSB) galaxy which rivals the archetypical GLSB Malin 1 in size. Like other GLSB galaxies, it has two components: a high surface brightness disk galaxy surrounded by an extended low surface brightness (LSB) disk. For UGC1382, the central component is a lenticular system with an effective radius of 6 kpc. Beyond this, the LSB disk has an effective radius of ~38 kpc and an extrapolated central surface brightness of ~26 mag/arcsec^2. Both components have a combined stella…
We observed the core region of the giant radio galaxy GRS J0844+4627 with e-MERLIN at 1.52 and 5.07 GHz. These observations revealed that the apparent single feature at the centre of GRS J0844+4627, as seen by GMRT, consists of two components separated by 2.7 kpc in projection. Follow-up observations at 1.66 GHz using the EVN unveiled the complex morphologies of the two components. In particular, the south-western component identified with the SDSS J084408.85+462744.2 galaxy morphologically resembles a compact symmetric object (CSO) with a projected linear size of 115 pc. If the CSO hypothesis…
We describe the design, data analysis, and basic results of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope Cold-HI AT $z\approx1$ (GMRT-CAT$z$1) survey, a 510-hour upgraded GMRT HI 21 cm emission survey of galaxies at $z=0.74-1.45$ in the DEEP2 survey fields. The GMRT-CAT$z$1 survey is aimed at characterising HI in galaxies during and just after the epoch of peak star-formation activity in the Universe, a key epoch in galaxy evolution. We obtained high-quality HI 21 cm spectra for 11,419 blue star-forming galaxies at $z=0.74-1.45$, in seven pointings on the DEEP2 subfields. We detect the stacked HI 21 cm…

The dominant physical processes responsible for the formation and longevity of giant gaseous and stellar discs in galaxies remain controversial. Although they are rare (less than 10 confirmed as of now), giant low-surface brightness (gLSB) discy galaxies provide interesting insights given their extreme nature. We describe observations of UGC 1378 including deep spectroscopy with the Russian 6m telescope and multi-band imaging with Binospec at the MMT. Galaxy UGC 1378 has both high surface brightness and an extended low surface brightness discs. Our stellar velocity dispersion data for the high…
We have used the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to carry out deep 610 MHz continuum imaging of four sub-fields of the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey. We stacked the radio emission in the GMRT images from a near-complete (absolute blue magnitude ${\rm M_B} \leq -21$) sample of 3698 blue star-forming galaxies with redshifts $0.7 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.45$ to detect (at $\approx 17σ$ significance) the median rest-frame 1.4 GHz radio continuum emission of the sample galaxies. The stacked emission is unresolved, with a rest-frame 1.4 GHz luminosity of $\rm L_{1.4 \; GHz} = (4.13 \pm 0.24) \tim…
Giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSBGs) with dynamically cold stellar discs reaching the radius of 130 kpc challenge currently considered galaxy formation mechanisms. We analyse new deep long-slit optical spectroscopic observations, archival optical images and published HI and optical spectroscopic data for a sample of seven gLSBGs, for which we performed mass modelling and estimated the parameters of dark matter haloes assuming the Burkert dark matter density profile. Our sample is not homogeneous by morphology, parameters of stellar populations and total mass, however, six of seven ga…
We are pursuing a project to build a database of phase calibration sources suitable for Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). Here we present the first release of 45 low frequency calibration sources at 235 MHz and 610 MHz. These calibration sources are broadly divided into quasars, radio galaxies and unidentified sources. We provide their flux densities, models for calibration sources, (u,v) plots, final deconvolved restored maps and clean-component lists/files for use in the Astronomical Image Processing System (AIPS) and the Common Astronomy Software Applications (CASA). We also assign a …
We report on results from GBT/ARGUS $^{12}$CO(1-0) observations for the giant low surface brightness galaxy Malin 1, which allow us to determine an upper limit for its CO mass, and hence its molecular gas mass and molecular gas mass surface density $Σ_{H_2}$. Although we performed very deep observations through 17 hours on source integration time, reaching a noise level of $\sim 0.2$ mK (T$^{*}_{A}$) with a corresponding extended source CO limit (3$σ$) of 0.09 K km s$^{-1}$, 19 times more sensitive than previous works, we do not detect the $^{12}$CO(1-0) emission line. However, the observation…
Rare giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSBGs) act as a stress test for the current galaxy formation paradigm. To answer the question `How rare are they?' we estimate their volume density in the local Universe. A visual inspection of 120~sq.~deg. covered by deep Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam data was performed independently by four team members. We detected 42 giant disky systems (30 of them isolated) at $z\leq0.1$ with either $g$-band 27.7~mag~arcsec$^{-2}$ isophotal radius or four disc scalelengths $4h \geq 50$~kpc, 37 of which (including 25 isolated) had low central surface brightness ($μ_{…
We have used the 610 MHz receivers of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to detect associated HI 21cm absorption from the $z = 1.2230$ blazar TXS1954+513. The GMRT HI 21cm absorption is likely to arise against either the milli-arcsecond-scale core or the one-sided milli-arcsecond-scale radio jet, and is blueshifted by $\approx 328$ km s$^{-1}$ from the blazar redshift. This is consistent with a scenario in which the HI cloud giving rise to the absorption is being driven outward by the radio jet. The integrated HI 21cm optical depth is $(0.716 \pm 0.037)$ km s$^{-1}$, implying a high HI…
A number of merging galaxy clusters show the presence of large-scale radio emission associated with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). These synchrotron sources are generally classified as radio haloes and radio relics. Whilst it is commonly accepted that mergers play a crucial role in the formation of radio haloes and relics, not all the merging clusters show the presence of giant diffuse radio sources and this provides important information concerning current models. The Abell 781 complex is a spectacular system composed of an apparent chain of clusters on the sky. Its main component is undergo…
We present the results of HI spectral stacking analysis of Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations targeting the COSMOS field. The GMRT data cube contains 474 field galaxies with redshifts known from the zCOSMOS-bright 10k catalogue. Spectra for the galaxies are co-added and the stacked spectrum allows us to make a $\sim 3σ$ measurement of the average HI mass. Using this average HI mass along with the integral optical $B$-band luminosity of the galaxies and the luminosity density of the COSMOS field, a volume normalisation is applied to obtain the cosmic HI mass density ($Ω_{\rm HI…
Giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSBGs) with the disk radii of up to 130 kpc represent a challenge for currently accepted theories of galaxy formation and evolution, because it is difficult to build-up such large dynamically cold systems via mergers preserving extended disks. We summarize the in-depth study of the sample of 7 gLSBGs based on the results of the performed spectral long-slit observations at the Russian 6-m BTA telescope of SAO RAS, surface photometry and HI data available in literature. Our study revealed that most gLSBGs do not deviate from the Tully-Fisher relation. We d…
Red Giant Branch Bump Brightness and Number Counts in 72 Galactic Globular Clusters Observed with the Hubble Space Telescope

New insights into the evolution of the FR I radio galaxy 3C 270 (NGC 4261) from VLA and GMRT radio observations
Low radio frequencies are favourable for the identification of emission from non-thermal processes such as synchrotron emission. The massive protostellar jet associated with IRAS 18162-2048 (also known as the HH80-81 system) has been imaged at low radio frequencies: 325, 610 and 1300 MHz, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, India. This is the first instance of detection of non-thermal emission from a massive protostellar jet at such low radio frequencies. The central region displays an elongated structure characteristic of the jet. In addition, the associated Herbig-Haro objects such as…
The lack of detection of supersymmetric particles is leading to look at alternative avenues for explaining dark matter's effects. Among them, modified theories of gravity may play an important role accounting even for both dark components needed in the standard cosmological model. Scalar-Tensor-Vector Gravity theory has been proposed to resolve the dark matter puzzle. Such a modified gravity model introduces, in its weak field limit, a Yukawa-like correction to the Newtonian potential, and is capable to explain most of the phenomenology related to dark matter at scale of galaxies and galaxy cl…
