The R--matrix method is implemented to study the heavy charm and bottom diquark, triquark, tetraquark and pentaquarks in configuration space, as the bound states of quark--antiquark, diquark--quark, diquark--antidiquark and diquark--antitriquark systems, respectively. The mass spectrum and the size of these systems are calculated for different partial wave channels. The calculated masses are compared with recent theoretical results obtained by other methods in momentum and configuration spaces and also by available experimental data.
Within the past ten years many new hadrons states were observed experimentally, some of which do not fit into the conventional quark model. I will talk about the few-body systems composed of heavy quarks, including the charmonium-like states and some loosely bound states.
We discuss recent results of hadron spectroscopy and hadron-hadron interaction within a quark model framework. New experimental data could point to the important role played by higher order Fock space components on low-energy observables. Our aim is to obtain a coherent description of the low-energy hadron phenomenology to constrain QCD phenomenological models and try to learn about low-energy realizations of the theory. This long-range effort is based in adapting few-body techniques to study many-quark systems.
We have evaluated the transport coefficients of quark and hadronic matter in the frame work of Polyakov-Quark-Meson model. The thermal widths of quarks and mesons, which inversely control the strength of these transport coefficients, are obtained from the imaginary part of their respective self-energies at finite temperature. Due to the threshold conditions of their self energies, some limited temperature regions of quark and hadronic phase become relevant for our numerical predictions on transport coefficients, which are grossly in agreement with earlier results.
The incorporation of running $α_s$ for the gluon emission vertex in calculations of radiative parton energy loss in a quark-gluon plasma is discussed. It is argued that the virtuality scale for running $α_s$ for induced gluon emission is determined by the square of the transverse momentum of the emitted gluon rather than by the square of the invariant mass of the final two-parton state often used in the literature.
We discuss the adequate treatment of the 3- and 4-body dynamics for the quark model picture of double-charm baryons and tetraquarks. We stress that the variational and Born-Oppenheimer approximations give energies very close to the exact ones, while the diquark approximation might be rather misleading. The Hall-Post inequalities also provide very useful lower bounds that exclude the possibility of stable tetraquarks for some mass ratios and some color wave functions.
Semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton scattering off few-nucleon systems is investigated assuming that virtual boson absorption occurs on a hadronic cluster which can be either a two-nucleon correlated pair or a six-quark bag. In both cases the relevance of nuclear effects on forward and backward nucleon emissions is illustrated and the differences expected in the energy distribution of the emitted nucleons are analyzed both at x>1 and x<1.
A quark model calculation of the processes gamma gamma -> pi+ pi- and gamma gamma -> pi0 pi0 is performed. At tree level, only charged pions couple to the initial state photons and neutral pions are not expected in the final state. However, a small but significant gamma gamma -> pi0 pi0 cross section is observed. We demonstrate that this may be accounted for by a rotation in isospin space induced by final state interactions. The resulting pi+ pi- cross section is in good agreement with experiment while the pi0 pi0 cross section is in qualitative agreement with the data.
We present a selection of topics with an interplay of hadron and few-body physics. This includes few-nucleon systems, light hypernuclei and quark dynamics for baryons and multiquarks. It is stressed that standard quark models predict very few stable multiquarks.
The status of lattice calculations of the quark spin, the quark orbital angular momentum, the glue angular momentum and glue spin in the nucleon is summarized. The quark spin calculation is recently carried out from the anomalous Ward identity with chiral fermions and is found to be small mainly due to the large negative anomaly term which is believed to be the source of the `proton spin crisis'. We also present the first calculation of the glue spin at finite nucleon momenta.
The space-like elastic form factor of heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons is investigated within a light-front constituent quark model in order to evaluate the Isgur-Wise form factor. The relativistic composition of the constituent quark spins is properly taken into account using the Melosh rotations, and various heavy-meson wave function are considered, including the eigenfunctions of an effective light-front mass operator reproducing meson mass spectra. It is shown that in a wide range of values of the recoil the Isgur-Wise form factor exhibits a moderate dependence upon the choice of the heavy-…
The presently experimentally interesting form factor for the anomalous process gamma -> pi^+ pi^0 pi^- is calculated as the quark "box"-amplitude where the intermediate fermion loop is the one of constituent quarks with the pseudoscalar coupling to pions. This also corresponds to the form factor, in the lowest order in pion interactions, of the sigma-model and of the chiral quark model. We give the analytic expression for the form factor in terms of an expansion in the pion momenta up to the order O(p^8) relative to the soft point result, and also perform its exact numerical evaluation. We com…
According to recent studies, Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) and Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) can be evaluated in a Constituent Quark Model (CQM) scenario, considering the constituent quarks as composite objects. In here, a fully covariant model for a system of two particles, together with its non relativistic limit, are used to calculate PDFs and GPDs. The analysis permits to realize that by no means the effects of Relativity can be simulated taking into account the structure of the constituent particles, the two effects being independent and necessary for a proper description…
We present a practical method for the solution of the quark-gluon vertex for use in Bethe--Salpeter and Dyson--Schwinger calculations. The efficient decomposition into the necessary covariants is detailed, with the numerical algorithm outlined for both real and complex Euclidean momenta. A truncation of the quark-gluon vertex, that neglects explicit back-coupling to enable the application to bound-state calculations, is given together with results for the quark propagator and quark-gluon vertex for different quark flavours. The relative impact of the various components of the quark-gluon verte…
We review the application of non-relativistic constituent quark models to study one, two and three non-strange baryon systems. We present results for the baryon spectra, potentials and observables of the NN, N$Δ$, $ΔΔ$ and NN$^*(1440)$ systems, and also for the binding energies of three non-strange baryon systems. We make emphasis on observable effects related to quark antisymmetry and its interplay with quark dynamics.
We report about a recent calculation of the heavy quarkonium mass and decay width in a quark-gluon plasma, whose temperature T and screening mass m_D satisfy the hierarchy m alpha_s >> pi T >> m alpha_s^2 >> m_D, m being the heavy-quark mass, up to order m alpha_s^5. The calculation may be relevant to understand the behavior of the Y(1S) in a quark-gluon plasma at present-day colliders.
We review recent calculations of second order corrections to heavy quark decays. Techniques developed in this context are applicable to many processes involving heavy charged particles, for example the nonabelian dipole radiation. Calculations involving relativistic radiating particles are also discussed.
The interactions of heavy quarks with the partonic environment at finite temperature $T$ and finite quark chemical potential $μ_q$ are investigated in terms of transport coefficients within the Dynamical Quasi-Particle model (DQPM) designed to reproduce the lattice-QCD results (including the partonic equation of state) in thermodynamic equilibrium. These results are confronted with those of nuclear many-body calculations close to the critical temperature $T_c$. The hadronic and partonic spatial diffusion coefficients join smoothly and show a pronounced minimum around $T_c$, at $μ_q=0$ as well …
In this paper there we describe the calculational background of deriving a strong meson Lagrangian from the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio quark model using the computer algebra systems FORM and REDUCE in recursive algorithms, based on the heat-kernel method for the calculation of the quark determinant.
This document contains a review on the quark model, prepared for lectures at the Niccolo Cabeo School at Ferrara in May 2012. It includes some historical aspects, the spectral properties of the 2-body and 3-body Schroedinger operators applied to mesons and baryons, the link between meson and baryon spectra, the role of flavour independence, and the speculations about stable or metastable multiquarks. The analogies between few-charge systems and few-quark bound states will be underlined.
As the heaviest known fundamental particle, the top quark has taken a central role in the study of fundamental interactions. The top quark mass is a fundamental parameter of the standard model which places constraints on the Higgs boson mass and electroweak symmetry breaking. Observations of the relative rates and kinematics of top quark final states may provide constraints for new physics processes. Past and current experimental measurements are presented with a critical view, and a look at the future prospects.
We revisit the calculation of multiple parton scattering of a heavy quark in nuclei within the framework of recently improved high-twist factorization formalism, in which gauge invariance is ensured by a delicate setup of the initial partons' transverse momenta. We derive a new result for medium modified heavy quark fragmentation functions in deeply inelastic scattering. It is consistent with the previous calculation of light quark energy loss in the massless limit, but leads to a new correction term in the heavy quark case, which vanishes in the soft gluon radiation limit. We show numerically…
We present results for several thermodynamic quantities within the next-to-leading order calculation of the thermodynamic potential in perturbative QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential including non-vanishing quark masses. These results are compared to lattice data and to higher-order optimized perturbative calculations to investigate the trend brought about by mass corrections.
The method of calculation of effective vertices of interaction of the Reggeized gluon and quark with particles in QCD in the next-to-leading order is developed. The method is demonstrated in the case of already known vertices of both gluon-gluon and quark-quark transitions in the scattering of gluons and quarks on the Reggeized gluon. It is used for the calculation of the gluon-quark transition in the scattering on the Reggeized quark.
We review the present status of theoretical predictions for both closed (J/psi) and open heavy quark production in high energy collisions, and their comparisons to experimental data.
Electric dipole moments (EDMs) of nucleons and nuclei, which are sought as evidence of CP violation, require lattice calculations to connect constraints from experiments to limits on the strong CP violation within QCD or CP violation introduced by new physics from beyond the standard model. Nucleon EDM calculations on a lattice are notoriously hard due to large statistical noise, chiral symmetry violating effects, and potential mixing of the EDM and the anomalous magnetic moment of the nucleon. In this report, details of ongoing lattice calculations of proton and neutron EDMs induced by the QC…
Next-to-leading order calculations for heavy quark three-jet production in e+e- annihilation are reviewed. Their applications for the measurement of the b-quark mass at LEP/SLC and for the test of flavour independence of the strong coupling constant are discussed.
A recent determination of the mass of the b quark, based exclusively on quantum chromodynamics (by avoiding strictly to introduce any phenomenological interaction potential of nonperturbative origin), may be improved by allowing for a merely numerical solution of the corresponding eigenvalue problem.
We use a recently completed O(alpha_s^2) fixed-order calculation of the heavy-flavour production cross section in e+e- collisions to compute the heavy-quark fragmentation function. We fit the result of our calculation, convoluted with a Peterson fragmentation function, to available data for charm production, and thus obtain a value for the parameter epsilon in the Peterson function. We discuss the relevance of mass effects and of subleading terms in our calculation.
Results of analytical calculations for heavy quark systems in higher orders of perturbation theory are overviewed. I discuss baryons with one finite mass quark in the next-to-leading order and heavy quark pair production near the threshold within NRQCD.
We present results for two-loop diagrams with massive quarks in the eikonal approximation. Explicit expressions are given for the UV poles in dimensional regularization of several of the required integrals.
Nontrivial $q \bar q$ sea effects have their origin in the low-$Q^2$ dynamics of strong QCD. We present here a quark model calculation of the contribution of $s \bar s$ pairs arising from a {\it complete} set of OZI-allowed strong $Y^*K^*$ hadronic loops to the net spin of the proton, to its charge radius, and to its magnetic moment. The calculation is performed in an ``unquenched quark model" which has been shown to preserve the spectroscopic successes of the naive quark model and to respect the OZI rule. We speculate that an extension of the calculation to the nonstrange sea will show that m…
In this article we have calculated the structure properties of a strange quark star in static model in the presence of a strong magnetic field using MIT bag model with a density dependent bag constant. To parameterize the density dependence of bag constant, we have used our results for the lowest order constrained variational calculation of the asymmetric nuclear matter. By calculating the equation of state of strange quark matter, we have shown that the pressure of this system increases by increasing both density and magnetic field. Finally, we have investigated the effect of density dependen…
A method of calculations of meson mass spectra in the framework of the model of quasi-independent quarks is discussed. Meson mass spectra evaluated with the help of the Dirac equation with the quasi-Coulombic potential and the confinement potential, as well as with the help of phenomenological mass formulae, are presented. Parameters of the quasi-independent quarks model, which are calulated on the basis of mass values of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, are given. Possible relations between parameters of the quasi-independent quarks model and constants of the Standard model of strong and elect…
We briefly report on a relativistic quark model scheme to calculate the O(P^4) pion-pion vertex in the planar approximation and in the chiral limit. The calculation is reduced to the solution of simple integral equations (Bethe-Salpeter like) by an effective use of chiral Ward Identities. Specific model computations are provided.
The uncertainties involved in the calculation of bottom quark cross-sections in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA are studied in different phase space regions. Besides the inclusive bottom quark cross-section, definitions closer to the detector acceptance requiring at least one high energetic muon from the semi-leptonic \bquark decay or a jet with high transverse energy are investigated. For each case the uncertainties due to the choice of the renormalisation and factorisation scale as well as the \bquark mass are estimated in the perturbative NLO QCD calculation and furthermore uncertainties …
The interactions of charm and bottom quarks in a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) are evaluated using a thermodynamic 2-body T-matrix. We specifically focus on heavy-quark (HQ) interactions with thermal gluons with an input potential motivated by lattice-QCD computations of the HQ free energy. The latter is implemented into a field-theoretic ansatz for color-Coulomb and (remnants of) confining interactions. This, in particular, enables to discuss corrections to the potential approach, specifically hard-thermal-loop corrections to the vertices, relativistic corrections deduced from pertinent Feynman di…
This report is devoted to the analytical calculation of heavy quarkonia production processes in modern experiments such as LHC, B-factories and superB-factories in computer. Theoretical description of heavy quarkonia is based on the factorization theorem. This theorem leads to special structure of the production amplitudes which can be used to develop computer algorithm which calculates these amplitudes automatically. This report is devoted to the description of this algorithm. As an example of its application we present the results of the calculation of double charmonia production in bottomon…
We describe two-flavor QCD lattice data for the pressure at finite temperature and zero chemical potential within a quasiparticle model. Relying only on thermodynamic selfconsistency, the model is extended to nonzero chemical potential. The results agree with lattice calculations in the region of small chemical potential.
In this letter, we clarify the algebra expression for calculating the quark condensate based on the non-perturbative quark propagator calculated through Schwinger-Dyson equation. The quark condensates, which characterize the low energy QCD vacuum, should not get a divergent quantity at large energy scale; the re-normalization group evolution behaviour at large energy scale therefore should be interpreted as "smeared collective effects" for it contains both perturbative and non-perturbative parts. We prefer the integral expression and get a quantity which is both convergent and scale dependent.
The treatment of confining interactions in non-relativistic three-quark systems is revised. Usually in the Faddeev equations the Faddeev components are coupled by the total potential. In the new treatment the Faddeev components are coupled only by the non-confining short-range part of the potential, allowing thus its channel-by-channel investigation. The convergence in angular momentum channels is much faster.
Non-singlet ${\cal{O}}(α_s^2)$ corrections from light quarks are calculated analytically for the massive quark-antiquark pair production rates through the vector, axial-vector, scalar and pseudoscalar currents for all energies above the threshold. The results are presented in terms of the moments of the absorptive part of the vacuum polarization function of the light quarks which allows for an immediate determination of ${\cal{O}}(α_s^2)$ corrections coming from other types of light particles. The kinematic regime close to the threshold is examined.
A 130 GeV mass is calculated for the t-quark, also called the truth quark or the top quark. The 130 GeV T-quark mass is consistent with the analysis of Dalitz and Goldstein (131 GeV (-11, +22 )) of a CDF T-quark candidate event [1]. It is not consistent with the theoretical calculations of Dimopoulos, Hall, and Raby that the T-quark mass range should be 176 to 190 GeV [2]. The calculation uses a model in which the 28-dimensional adjoint representation of Spin(8) forms the gauge group of the model with an 8-dimensional spacetime whose tangent vector space is represented by the vector representa…
We report on the lattice calculations of the heavy quark potential at $T>0$ in 2+1 flavor QCD at physical quark masses using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark discretization. We study in detail the systematic effects in the determination of the real and imaginary parts of the potential when using the moment method.
Two topics in heavy quark expansion are discussed. The heavy quark potential in perturbation theory is reviewed in connection to the problem of the heavy quark mass. The nontrivial reason behind the failure of the "potential subtracted" mass in higher orders is elucidated. The heavy quark sum rules are the second subject. The physics behind the new exact sum rules is described and a simple quantum mechanical derivation is given. The question of saturation of sum rules is discussed. A comment on the nonstandard possibility which would affect analysis of BR_sl(B) vs. n_c is made.
The short-distance coefficients for the color-octet 3S1 term in the fragmentation function for a gluon to split into heavy quarkonium states is calculated to order alpha_s^2. The gauge-invariant definition of the fragmentation function by Collins and Soper is employed. Ultraviolet divergences are removed using the MS-bar renormalization procedure. The longitudinal term in the fragmentation function agrees with a previous calculation by Beneke and Rothstein. The next-to-leading order correction to the transverse term disagrees with a previous calculation.
We calculate the isosinglet unpolarized quark-- and antiquark distributions at a low normalization point in the large--$N_c$ limit. The nucleon is described as a self-consistent soliton solution of the effective chiral theory. The ultraviolet cutoff is implemented by a Pauli-Villars subtraction. The quark and antiquark distributions satisfy the momentum as well as the baryon number sum rule, corresponding to ``constituent'' quarks whose structure is not yet resolved at the low scale. Already at this level a sizable number of antiquarks is present.
A computation of the Isgur-Wise universal form factor using a lattice implementation of the heavy quark effective theory is described, and the results of a lattice simulation are presented.
We address the issue of three-quark clusters in a medium of finite temperatures and densities. We use the light front approach and utilize a Green function formalism. We consider first the isolated case using a zero-range interaction and introducing an invariant cut-off and then medium effects. The Mott lines are shown for different values of the cut-off.
We present the calculation of QCD radiative corrections to heavy-quark production at NNLO. The calculation is implemented in an updated version of \textsc{Matrix}, which allows us to obtain multidifferential predictions for stable top quarks. We also report on the NNLO calculation for $b{\bar b}$ production and comment on the inclusion of top-quark decays and of the extension of our results to $t\bar tH$.
We have discussed dynamical behavior of strange quark matter components, in particular the effects of density dependent quark mass on the equation of state of strange quark matter. Dynamical masses of quarks have been computed within Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, then we have done the strange quark matter calculations employing the MIT bag model with these dynamical masses. For the sake of comparing dynamical mass interaction with QCD quark-quark interaction, we have considered the one-gluon-exchange term as the effective interaction between quarks for MIT bag model. Our dynamical approach i…
In this paper, we calculate the mass spectra of heavy quarkonium by using matrix Numerov's method to make the predictions of F and G states for further experiments. The method gives a very reasonable result which is in a good agreement with other methods and with recently published theoretical data. From the yielded wave functions we calculate the root mean square radius r_ms and \b{eta} coefficients of heavy quarkonium
We report a complete calculation of the quark and glue momenta and angular momenta in the proton. These include the quark contributions from both the connected and disconnected insertions. The calculation is carried out on a $16^3 \times 24$ quenched lattice at $β= 6.0$ and for Wilson fermions with $κ= 0.154, 0.155,$ and 0.1555 which correspond to pion masses at 650, 538, and 478 MeV. The quark loops are calculated with $Z_4$ noise and signal-to-noise is improved further with unbiased subtractions. The glue operator is comprised of gauge-field tensors constructed from the overlap operator. The…
I present calculations of approximate corrections from NNLL soft-gluon resummation for total and differential cross sections in top-antitop pair production and single-top production in hadronic collisions. I show that soft-gluon corrections from partonic threshold are the dominant contribution to top-quark production and closely approximate exact results. I present aN$^3$LO results for the total $t{\bar t}$ cross section, the top-quark $p_T$ and rapidity distributions, and the top-quark forward-backward asymmetry. I also provide updates for single-top production in the $t$, $s$, and $tW$ chann…
I discuss three different selected topics in top quark physics. The first topic concerns the next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of the hadroproduction of top quark pairs and the role of multiple polylogarithms in this calculation. I report on an ongoing next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of heavy quark pair production in hadron collisions where the loop--by--loop part of the calculation is about to be completed. Calculating the loop-by-loop part allows one to take a glimpse at the mathematical structure of the full NNLO calculation. The loop-by-loop contributions bring in a new c…
We study the possibility that the light scalar mesons are (qbar qbar q q) states rather than (qbar q). We perform a lattice QCD calculation of pseudoscalar meson scattering amplitudes, ignoring quark loops and quark annihilation, and find indications that for sufficiently heavy quarks there is a stable four-quark bound state with J^{PC}=0^{++} and non-exotic flavor quantum numbers.
Masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, which are ground states of light or/and heavy quarks and antiquarks, have been calculated in the framework of an extended model of quasi-independent quarks with absolute uncertainties about 30 MeV. It is shown that the assumption on equidistant discrete levels for a mean field energy does not contradict to existing data and permits to reduce a number of model parameters. It is obtained, that a difference between neighbouring mean field energy levels is flavour independent. Values of spin-spin interaction between quarks and antiquarks with different fla…
In this article we discuss the calculation of single top-quark production in the t channel at two-loop order in QCD. In particular we present the decomposition of the amplitude according to its spin and colour structure and present complete results for the two-loop amplitudes in terms of master integrals. For the vertex corrections compact analytic expressions are given. The box contributions are implemented in a publicly available C program.
Recent results on the QCD analysis of bound states of heavy $\bar{q}q$ quarks are reviewed, paying attention to what can be derived from the theory with a reasonable degree of rigour. We report a calculation of $\bar{b}c$ bound states; a very precise evaluation of $b, c$ quark masses from quarkonium spectrum; the NNLO evaluation of $Υ\to e^+e^-$; and a discussion of power corrections. For the $b$ quark {\sl pole} mass we get, including $O(m_c^2/m_b^2)$ and $O(α_s^5\log α_s)$ corrections, $m_b=5.020\pm0.058 GeV$; and for the $\bar{MS}$ mass the result, correct to $O(α_s^3)$, $O(m_c^2/m_b^2)$, $…
