We have collected literature data on young Galactic objects such as masers with VLBI-measured trigonometric parallaxes, OB associations, HII regions and Cepheids. We have recently established that vertical disk scale height is strongly influenced by the objects of the Local arm. In the present work we used samples that do not contain objects in this arm. Based on the model of a self-gravitating isothermal disk for the density distribution, we have found the following vertical disk scale heights: h=46+/-5 pc from 69 masers with trigonometric parallaxes, h=36+/-3 pc from 59 OB associations, h=35.6+/-2.7 pc from 147 HII regions, h=52.1+/-1.9 pc from 195 young Cepheids, and h=72.0+/-2.3 pc from 192 old Cepheids.
We study the vertical distribution of the highly inclined galaxies from the Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies - an EVLA Survey (CHANG-ES). We explore the feasibility of photometrically deriving the HI disk scale-heights from the moment-0 images of the relatively edge-on galaxies with inclination >80 deg, by quantifying the systematic broadening effects and thus deriving correction equations for direct measurements. The corrected HI disk scale-heights of the relatively edge-on galaxies from the CHANG-ES sample show trends consistent with the quasi-equilibrium model of the vertical structure of…
Accurately reproducing the thin cold gas discs observed in nearby spiral galaxies has been a long standing issue in cosmological simulations. Here, we present measurements of the radially resolved HI scale height in 22 non-interacting Milky Way-mass galaxies from the FIREbox cosmological volume. We measure the HI scale heights using five different approaches commonly used in the literature: fitting the vertical volume density distribution with a Gaussian, the distance between maximum and half-maximum of the vertical volume density distribution, a semi-empirical description using the velocity d…
Up-to-date data on 2214 classical Cepheids have been used. The model of an exponential matter density distribution in the Galactic thin disk has been applied. New estimates of the radial disk scale length $h_R,$ the distance of the Sun from the symmetry plane $z_\odot$, and the vertical disk scale height $h_z$ have been obtained. Based on samples of 1087 Cepheids younger than 120 Myr and 1127 Cepheids older than 120 Myr, we have found $h_R=2.30\pm0.09$ kpc and $h_R=1.96\pm0.12$ kpc, respectively. It has turned out that an unambiguous estimate of $h_R$ cannot be obtained from their overall radi…

Intermediate- and high-velocity clouds (IVCs, HVCs) are a potential source of fuel for star formation in the Milky Way (MW), but their origins and fates depend sensitively on their distances. We search for IVC and HVC in HST high-resolution ultraviolet spectra of 55 halo stars at vertical heights $|z| \gtrsim 1$ kpc. We show that IVCs ($40 \leq |v_{\rm LSR}| <90$ km/s) have a high detection rate - the covering factor, $f_c$ - that is about constant ($f_c =0.90\pm 0.04$) from $z=1.5$ to $14$ kpc, implying IVCs are essentially confined to $|z|\lesssim 1.5$ kpc. For the HVCs ($90 \leq |v_{\rm LSR…
This work investigates the vertical profile of the stars in the disk of the Milky Way. The models investigated are of the form $sech^{2/n}(nz/(2H))$ where, setting $α= 2/n$, the three functions of the sequence $α= 0,1,2$ correspond to exponential, $sech$, $sech^2$ functions. We consider symmetric models and asymmetric models, above and below the plane. The study uses the large sample of K and M stars of Ferguson et al. (2017) and applies the methods of Bayesian model comparison to discriminate between the 6 models. Two inconsistencies in Ferguson et al. (2017), concerning the vertical height c…
The review is devoted to the Radcliffe Wave recently discovered by Alves et al. from the analysis of molecular clouds. These authors singled out a narrow chain of molecular clouds, elongated almost in one line, located at an inclination of about 30$^o$ to the galactic axis y. The Radcliffe Wave itself describes damped vertical oscillations of molecular clouds with a maximum oscillation amplitude of about 160 pc and a characteristic wavelength of about 2.5 kpc. To date, the presence of the Radcliffe Wave has been confirmed in the vertical distribution of a) interstellar dust, b) sources of mase…

The vertical density distribution of stars in a galactic disc is traditionally obtained by assuming an isothermal vertical velocity dispersion of stars. Recent observations from SDSS, LAMOST, RAVE, Gaia etc show that this dispersion increases with height from the mid-plane. Here we study the dynamical effect of such non-isothermal dispersion on the self-consistent vertical density distribution for the thin disc stars in the Galaxy, obtained by solving together the Poisson equation and the equation of hydrostatic equilibrium. We find that in the non-isothermal case the mid-plane density is lowe…
As heating processes can broaden the distributions of radial actions and the vertical distributions of the Galactic disks, we investigate the vertical distribution of the Galactic disks as a function of radial action based on Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment(APOGEE) and Gaia data in order to deepen our understanding of the formation and heating history of the Galactic disks. We find that the distributions of radial action for both the thin and thick disks can be approximately described by pseudo-isothermal distributions, which give a statistical measurement for the temper…
We present the Galactic disk vertical velocity analysis using OB type stars (OB), Red Clump stars (RC), and Main-Sequence-Turn-Off stars (MSTO) with different average age populations crossed matched with LAMOST DR5 and Gaia DR3. We reveal the vertical velocities of the three populations varies clearly with the Galactocentric distance ($R$) and the younger stellar population has stronger increasing trend in general. The bending and breathing modes indicated by the vertical motions are dependent on the populations and they are varying with spatial locations. These vertical motions may be due to …
The Radcliffe Wave (RW) is a recently discovered sinusoidal vertical feature of dense gas in the proximity of the Sun. In the disk plane, it is aligned with the Local Arm. However, the origin of its vertical undulation is still unknown. This study constrains the kinematics of the RW, using young stars and open clusters as tracers, and explores the possibility of this oscillation being part of a more extended vertical mode. We study the median vertical velocity trends of the young stars and clusters along with the RW and extend it further to the region beyond it. We discover a kinematic wave in…
With backwards orbit integration we estimate birth locations of young stellar associations and moving groups identified in the solar neighborhood that are younger than 70 Myr. The birth locations of most of these stellar associations are at smaller galactocentric radius than the Sun, implying that their stars moved radially outwards after birth. Exceptions to this rule include are the Argus and Octans associations which formed outside the Sun's Galactocentric radius. Variations in birth heights of the stellar associations suggest that they were born in a corrugated disk of molecular clouds, si…
High spatial resolution CO observations of mid-inclination (30-75°) protoplanetary disks offer an opportunity to study the vertical distribution of CO emission and temperature. The asymmetry of line emission relative to the disk major axis allows for a direct mapping of the emission height above the midplane, and for optically-thick, spatially-resolved emission in LTE, the intensity is a measure of the local gas temperature. Our analysis of ALMA archival data yields CO emission surfaces, dynamically-constrained stellar host masses, and disk atmosphere gas temperatures for the disks around: HD …
