We prove that the existence of totally real immersions of manifolds is a closed property under cut-and-paste constructions along submanifolds including connected sums. We study the existence of totally real embeddings for simply connected 5-manifolds and orientable 6-manifolds and determine the diffeomorphism and homotopy types. We show that the fundamental group is not an obstruction for the existence of a totally real embedding for high-dimensional manifolds in contrast with the situation in dimension four.
The optimal target dimensions are determined for totally real immersions and for independent mappings into complex affine spaces. Our arguments are similar to those given by Forster, but we use orientable manifolds as far as possible and so are able to obtain improved results for orientable manifolds of even dimension. This leads to new examples showing that the known immersion and submersion dimensions for holomorphic mappings from Stein manifolds to affine spaces are best possible.
We shall prove that there are totally real and real analytic embeddings of $S^k$ in $\cc^n$ which are not biholomorphically equivalent if $k\geq 5$ and $n=k+2[\frac{k-1}{4}]$. We also show that a smooth manifold $M$ admits a totally real immersion in $\cc^n$ with a trivial complex normal bundle if and only if the complexified tangent bundle of $M$ is trivial. The latter is proved by applying Gromov's weak homotopy equivalence principle for totally real immersions to Hirsch's transversal fields theory.
We show that, for a closed orientable n-manifold, with n not congruent to 3 modulo 4, the existence of a CR-regular embedding into complex (n-1)-space ensures the existence of a totally real embedding into complex n-space. This implies that a closed orientable (4k+1)-manifold with non-vanishing Kervaire semi-characteristic possesses no CR-regular embedding into complex 4k-space. We also pay special attention to the cases of CR-regular embeddings of spheres and of simply-connected 5-manifolds.
We consider two classes of smooth maps M^n\to C ^N. Definition. A map f:M^n\to C^N is called an independent map if df_1(p)\wedge...\wedge df_N (p)\neq 0. We are interested in the optimal value of N for all manifolds of dimension n for independent maps and also for totally real immersions.
We show that a compact orientable 4-manifold M has a CR regular immersion into C3 if and only if both its first Pontryagin class and its Euler characteristic vanish, and has a CR regular embedding into C3 if and only if in addition the second Stiefel-Whitney class of M vanishes.
Gromov, in his seminal 1989 paper on the Oka principle, proved that every continuous map from a Stein manifold into an elliptic manifold is homotopic to a holomorphic map. Previously we have shown that, given a continuous map $X \to \C\times\C^*$ from a finitely connected planar domain $X$ without isolated boundary points, a stronger Oka property holds, namely that the map is homotopic to a proper holomorphic embedding. Here we show that every continuous map from a finitely connected planar domain, possibly with punctures, into $\C\times\C^*$ is homotopic to a proper immersion that identifies …
We embed compact $C^\infty$ manifolds into $\mathbb C^n$ as totally real manifolds with prescribed polynomial hulls. As a consequence we show that any compact $C^\infty$ manifold of dimension $d$ admits a totally real embedding into $\mathbb C^{\lfloor \frac{3d}{2}\rfloor}$ with non-trivial polynomial hull without complex structure.
We present a construction of regular Stein neighborhoods of a union of maximally totally real subspaces $M=(A+iI)\mathbb{R}^n$ and $N=\mathbb{R}^n$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$, provided that the entries of a real $n \times n$ matrix $A$ are sufficiently small. Our proof is based on a local construction of a suitable plurisubharmonic function $ρ$ near the origin, such that the sublevel sets of $ρ$ are strongly pseudoconvex and admit strong deformation retraction to $M\cup N$. We also give the application of this result to totally real immersions of real $n$-manifolds in $\mathbb{C}^n$ with only finitely …
In this paper, we characterize $C^2$-smooth totally geodesic isometric embeddings $f\colon Ω\toΩ'$ between bounded symmetric domains $Ω$ and $Ω'$ which extend $C^1$-smoothly over some open subset in the Shilov boundaries and have nontrivial normal derivatives on it. In particular, if $Ω$ is irreducible, there exist totally geodesic bounded symmetric subdomains $Ω_1$ and $Ω_2$ of $Ω'$ such that $f = (f_1, f_2)$ maps into $Ω_1\times Ω_2\subset Ω$ where $f_1$ is holomorphic and $f_2$ is anti-holomorphic totally geodesic isometric embeddings. If $\text{rank}(Ω')<2\text{rank}(Ω)$, then either $f$ o…
In this paper we survey results on the existence of holomorphic embeddings and immersions of Stein manifolds into complex manifolds. Most results pertain to proper maps into Stein manifolds. We include a new result saying that every continuous map $X\to Y$ between Stein manifolds is homotopic to a proper holomorphic embedding provided that $\mathrm{dim} Y > 2\mathrm{dim}\, X$ and we allow a homotopic deformation of the Stein structure on $X$.
In this paper we prove that every Stein manifold $S$ admits a proper holomorphic immersion into any Stein manifold $X$ of dimension $2\mathrm{dim}S$ enjoying the density property or the volume density property. The case $\mathrm{dim}S=1$ was proved beforehand by Andrist and Wold (Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble), 64(2):681-697, 2014). This result generalizes the classical theorem of Bishop and Narasimhan for immersions to $\mathbb{C}^n$ with $n=2\mathrm{dim}S$, and it complements the proper embedding theorem proved by Andrist et al. when $\mathrm{dim}X>2\mathrm{dim}S$ (J. Anal. Math., 130:135-150…
In this article, we demonstrate methods for the local removal and modification of complex tangents to embeddings of $S^3$ into $\mathbb{C}^3$. In particular, given any embedding of $S^3$ and a neighborhood of the complex tangents of the embedding, we show that there exists a ($C^0$-close) totally real embedding which agrees with the original embedding outside the given neighborhood of the complex tangents. We also demonstrate that given any knot type K in $S^3$, either there exists an embedding of $S^3$ which assumes non-degenerate complex tangents exactly along K or there exists a non-degener…
A locally conformally Kaehler (LCK) manifold is a complex manifold admitting a Kaehler covering M, with monodromy acting on M by Kaehler homotheties. A compact LCK manifold is Vaisman if it admits a holomorphic flow acting by non-trivial homotheties on M. We prove a non-Kaehler analogue of Kodaira embedding theorem: any compact Vaisman manifold admits a natural holomorphic immersion to a Hopf manifold. As an application, we obtain that any Sasakian manifold has a contact immersion to an odd-dimensional sphere.
Let S be a closed connected real surface and f a smooth embedding or immersion of S into a complex surface X. Assuming that the number of complex points of the immersion (counted with algebraic multiplicities) is non-positive we prove that f can be uniformly approximated by an isotopic immersion g whose image g(S) in X has a basis of open Stein neighborhoods which are homotopy equivalent to g(S). We obtain precise results for surfaces in the complex projective plane CP^2 and find an immersed symplectic sphere in CP^2 with a Stein neighborhood. Conversely, the generalized adjunction inequality …
In this paper, we prove that every confomal minimal immersion of an open Riemann surface into $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n\ge 5$ can be approximated uniformly on compacts by conformal minimal embeddings. Furthermore, we show that every open Riemann surface carries a proper conformal minimal embedding into $\mathbb{R}^5$. One of our main tools is a Mergelyan approximation theorem for conformal minimal immersions to $\mathbb{R}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$ which is also proved in the paper.
We define flag structures on a real three manifold M as the choice of two complex lines on the complexified tangent space at each point of M. We suppose that the plane field defined by the complex lines is a contact plane and construct an adapted connection on an appropriate principal bundle. This includes path geometries and CR structures as special cases. We prove that the null curvature models are given by totally real submanifolds in the flag space SL(3, C)/B, where B is the subgroup of upper triangular matrices. We also define a global invariant which is analogous to the Chern-Simons seco…
In the mid-1980's, M. Gromov used his machinery of the $h$-principle to prove that there exists totally real embeddings of $S^3$ into $\mathbb{C}^3$. Subsequently, Patrick Ahern and Walter Rudin explicitly demonstrated such a totally real embedding. In this paper, we consider the generic situation for such embeddings, namely where complex tangents arise as codimension-2 subspaces. We first consider the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$ and generate some interesting results there-in. Then, by using the biholomorphism of $\mathbb{H}$ with the 3-sphere minus a point, we demonstrate that every homeomo…
We prove that any compact almost complex manifold $(M, J)$ of real dimension $2m$ admits a pseudo-holomorphic embedding in a Euclidean space of dimension $4m + 2$, endowed with a suitable non-standard almost complex structure. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition, expressed in terms of the Segre class of $(M, J)$, for the existence of an embedding or an immersion in an almost complex Euclidean $4m$-space. We also discuss the pseudo-holomorphic embeddings of an almost complex 4-manifold in $R^6$.
Ahern and Rudin have given an explicit construction of a totally real embedding of $S^3$ in $\mathbb{C}^3$. As a generalization of their example, we give an explicit example of a CR regular embedding of $S^{4n-1}$ in $\mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$. Consequently, we show that the odd dimensional sphere $S^{2m-1}$ with $m>1$ admits a CR regular embedding in $\mathbb{C}^{m+1}$ if and only if $m$ is even.
