In this paper, we present a branch and bound algorithm for extracting approximate solutions to Global Polynomial Optimization (GPO) problems with bounded feasible sets.
The algorithm is based on a combination of SOS/Moment relaxations and successively bisecting a hyper-rectangle containing the feasible set of the GPO problem. At each iteration, the algorithm makes a comparison between the volume of the hyper-rectangles and their associated lower bounds to the GPO problem obtained by SOS/Moment relaxations to choose and subdivide an existing hyper-rectangle. For any desired accuracy, if we use sufficiently large order of SOS/Moment relaxations, then the algorithm is guaranteed to return a suboptimal point in a certain sense. For a fixed order of SOS/Moment relaxations, the complexity of the algorithm is linear in the number of iterations and polynomial in the number of constrains. We illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm for a 6-variable, 5-constraint GPO problem for which the ideal generated by the equality constraints is not zero-dimensional - a case where the existing Moment-based approach for extracting the global minimizer might fail.
We introduce a sublevel Moment-SOS hierarchy where each SDP relaxation can be viewed as an intermediate (or interpolation) between the d-th and (d+1)-th order SDP relaxations of the Moment-SOS hierarchy (dense or sparse version). With the flexible choice of determining the size (level) and number (depth) of subsets in the SDP relaxation, one is able to obtain different improvements compared to the d-th order relaxation, based on the machine memory capacity. In particular, we provide numerical experiments for d=1 and various types of problems both in combinatorial optimization (Max-Cut, Mixed I…
In this paper, we study variational inequality problems (VIPs) with involved mappings and feasible sets characterized by polynomial functions (namely, polynomial VIPs). We propose a numerical algorithm for computing solutions to polynomial VIPs based on Lagrange multiplier expressions and the Moment-SOS hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations. We also extend our approach to finding more or even all solutions to polynomial VIPs. We show that the method proposed in this paper can find solutions or detect the nonexistence of solutions within finitely many steps, under some general assumptions. In a…

This paper is concerned with polynomial optimization problems. We show how to exploit term (or monomial) sparsity of the input polynomials to obtain a new converging hierarchy of semidefinite programming relaxations. The novelty (and distinguishing feature) of such relaxations is to involve block-diagonal matrices obtained in an iterative procedure performing completion of the connected components of certain adjacency graphs. The graphs are related to the terms arising in the original data and not to the links between variables. Our theoretical framework is then applied to compute lower bounds…
This paper focuses on the computation of joint spectral radii (JSR), when the involved matrices are sparse. We provide a sparse variant of the procedure proposed by Parrilo and Jadbabaie, to compute upper bounds of the JSR by means of sum-of-squares (SOS) relaxations. Our resulting iterative algorithm, called SparseJSR, is based on the term sparsity SOS (TSSOS) framework, developed by Wang, Magron and Lasserre, yielding SOS decompositions of polynomials with arbitrary sparse support. SparseJSR exploits the sparsity of the input matrices to significantly reduce the computational burden associat…
In this paper, we study a class of fractional semi-infinite polynomial programming problems involving s.o.s-convex polynomial functions. For such a problem, by a conic reformulation proposed in our previous work and the quadratic modules associated with the index set, a hierarchy of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations can be constructed and convergent upper bounds of the optimum can be obtained. In this paper, by introducing Lasserre's measure-based representation of nonnegative polynomials on the index set to the conic reformulation, we present a new SDP relaxation method for the consi…
We consider semidefinite programming (SDP) approaches for solving the maximum satisfiability problem (MAX-SAT) and the weighted partial MAX-SAT. It is widely known that SDP is well-suited to approximate the (MAX-)2-SAT. Our work shows the potential of SDP also for other satisfiability problems, by being competitive with some of the best solvers in the yearly MAX-SAT competition. Our solver combines sum of squares (SOS) based SDP bounds and an efficient parser within a branch & bound scheme. On the theoretical side, we propose a family of semidefinite feasibility problems, and show that a membe…
The minimum sum-of-squares clustering problem (MSSC) consists of partitioning $n$ observations into $k$ clusters in order to minimize the sum of squared distances from the points to the centroid of their cluster. In this paper, we propose an exact algorithm for the MSSC problem based on the branch-and-bound technique. The lower bound is computed by using a cutting-plane procedure where valid inequalities are iteratively added to the Peng-Wei SDP relaxation. The upper bound is computed with the constrained version of k-means where the initial centroids are extracted from the solution of the SDP…

This paper studies stochastic optimization problems with polynomials. We propose an optimization model with sample averages and perturbations. The Lasserre type Moment-SOS relaxations are used to solve the sample average optimization. Properties of the optimization and its relaxations are studied. Numerical experiments are presented.
This paper studies bilevel polynomial optimization problems. To solve them, we give a method based on polynomial optimization relaxations. Each relaxation is obtained from the Kurash-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions for the lower level optimization and the exchange technique for semi-infinite programming. For KKT conditions, Lagrange multipliers are represented as polynomial or rational functions. The Moment-SOS relaxations are used to solve the polynomial optimizattion relaxations. Under some general assumptions, we prove the convergence of the algorithm for solving bilevel polynomial optimizatio…
We show that (i) any constrained polynomial optimization problem (POP) has an equivalent formulation on a variety contained in an Euclidean sphere and (ii) the resulting semidefinite relaxations in the moment-SOS hierarchy have the constant trace property (CTP) for the involved matrices. We then exploit the CTP to avoid solving the semidefinite relaxations via interior-point methods and rather use ad-hoc spectral methods that minimize the largest eigenvalue of a matrix pencil. Convergence to the optimal value of the semidefinite relaxation is guaranteed. As a result we obtain a hierarchy of no…
