The electronic structure of FeSe, the simplest iron based superconductor (Fe-SC), conceals a potential of dramatic increase of Tc that realizes under pressure or in a single layer film. This is also the system where nematicity, the phenomenon of a keen current interest, is most easy to study since it is not accompanied by the antiferomagnetic transition like in all other Fe-SC's. Here we overview recent experimental data on electronic structure of FeSe-based superconductors: isovalently doped crystals, intercalates, and single layer films, trying to clarify its topology and possible relation of this topology to superconductivity. We argue that the marked differences between the experimental and calculated band structures for all FeSe compounds can be described by a hoping selective renormalization model for a spin/orbital correlated state that may naturally explain both the evolution of the band structure with temperature and nematicity.
We investigated the pressure effects on the FeSe superconductor and the related compounds. Pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) for FeSe0.8S0.2 exhibits a dome-shaped behavior below 0.76 GPa. On the other hand, the Tc of FeSe0.25Te0.75 linearly increases up to 0.99 GPa. Here we discuss the relation between the physical pressure effects and the chemical pressure effects on the FeSe system.
Unlike the parent phases of the iron-arsenide high Tc superconductors, undoped FeSe is not magnetically ordered and exhibits superconductivity with Tc~9K. Equally surprising is the fact that applied pressure dramatically enhances the modest Tc to ~37K. We investigate the electronic properties of FeSe using 77Se NMR to search for the key to the superconducting mechanism. We demonstrate that the electronic properties of FeSe are very similar to those of electron-doped FeAs superconductors, and that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are strongly enhanced near Tc. Furthermore, applied pressure e…
This is a "perspective" inspired by the forthcoming article, "What makes the $T_c$ of monolayer FeSe on SrTiO so high: a sign-problem free quantum Monte Carlo study," by Z-X. Li, F. Wang, H. Yao, and D-H. Lee, arXiv:1512.06179.
Superconductivity originates from pairing of electrons. Pairing channel on Fermi surface and pairing glue are thus two pivotal issues for understanding a superconductor. Recently, high-temperature superconductivity over 40 K was found in electron-doped FeSe superconductors including K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$, Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe, and 1 monolayer FeSe thin film. However, their pairing mechanism remains controversial. Here, we studied the systematic evolution of electronic structure in potassium-coated FeSe single crystal. The doping level is controlled precisely by in situ evaporating potass…
Superconductivity is significantly enhanced in monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO3, but not for multilayer films, in which large strength of nematicity develops. However, the link between the high-transition temperature superconductivity in monolayer and the correlation related nematicity in multilayer FeSe films is not well understood. Here, we use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to study few-layer FeSe thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We observe an incommensurate long-range smectic phase, which solely appears in bilayer FeSe films. The smectic order still locally exists a…
The FeSe-based superconductors exhibit a wide range of critical temperature Tc under a variety of material and physical conditions, but extensive studies to date have yet to produce a consensus view on the underlying mechanism. Here we report on a systematic Raman scattering work on intercalated FeSe superconductors Lix(NH3)yFe2Se2 and (Li,Fe)OHFeSe compared to pristine FeSe. All three crystals show an anomalous power-law temperature dependence of phonon linewidths, deviating from the standard anharmonic behavior. This intriguing phenomenon is attributed to electron-phonon coupling effects enh…
Quasiparticle dynamics of FeSe single crystals revealed by dual-color transient reflectivity measurements (ΔR/R) provides unprecedented information on Fe-based superconductors. The amplitude of fast component in ΔR/R clearly tells a competing scenario between spin fluctuations and superconductivity. Together with the transport measurements, the relaxation time analysis further exhibits anomalous changes at 90 K and 230 K. The former manifests a structure phase transition as well as the associated phonon softening. The latter suggests a previously overlooked phase transition or crossover in FeS…
The thermal conductivity of the iron-based superconductor FeSe was measured at temperatures down to 50 mK in magnetic fields up to 17 T. In zero magnetic field, the electronic residual linear term in the T = 0 limit, κ_0/T, is vanishingly small. Application of a magnetic field H causes no increase in κ_0/T initially. Those two observations show that there are no zero-energy quasiparticles that carry heat and therefore no nodes in the superconducting gap of FeSe. The full field dependence of κ_0/T has the classic shape of a two-band superconductor, such as MgB2: it rises exponentially at very l…
FeSe is argued as a superconductor in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer Bose-Einstein-condensation crossover regime where the superconducting-gap size and the superconducting transition temperature Tc are comparable to the Fermi energy. In this regime, vortex bound states should be well quantized and the preformed pairs above Tc may yield a pseudogap in the quasiparticle-excitation spectrum. We performed spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy to search for these features. We found Friedel-like oscillations near the vortex, which manifest the quantized levels, whereas the pseudogap was…
We report the results of $^{77}$Se--nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in $α$-FeSe, which exhibits a similar crystal structure to the LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ superconductor and shows superconductivity at 8 K. The nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ shows $T^3$ behavior below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ without a coherence peak. The $T_1T=$ const. behavior, indicative of the Fermi liquid state, can be seen in a wide temperature range above $T_c$. The superconductivity in $α$-FeSe is also an unconventional one as well as LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and related materials. The Fe…
In this work, we investigate the local density of states (LDOS) near a magnetic impurity in single-layer FeSe superconductors. The two-orbital model with spin-orbit coupling proposed in Ref. [{\emph{Phys. Rev. Lett.} \textbf{119}, 267001 (2017)}] is used to describe the FeSe superconductor. In the strong coupling regime, two impurity resonance peaks appear with opposite resonance energies in the LDOS spectral function. For a strong spin-orbit coupling, the superconducting gap in this model is $d$-wave symmetric with nodes, the spatial distributions of the LDOS at the two resonance energies are…
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on FeSe superconductor (Tc ~ 8 K), which exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition at Ts ~ 90 K. At low temperature we found splitting of the energy bands as large as 50 meV at the M point in the Brillouin zone, likely caused by the formation of electronically driven nematic states. This band splitting persists up to T ~ 110 K, slightly above Ts, suggesting that the structural transition is triggered by the electronic nematicity. We have also revealed that at low temperature the band splitting gives r…
One of the most important properties of very recently reported FeSe based superconductors is the robustness of their superconductivity under applied magnetic field. The synthesis and control of superconductivity in FeSe based compounds is rather a difficult task. Synthesis and physical property characterization for optimized superconductivity of FeSe1/2Te1/2 at 13 K is reported here. The compound crystallized in a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a = 3.8008(10) and c = 6.0187 (15) A. Magnetization measurements indicated bulk superconductivity with lower critical field (Hc1) of arou…
The FeSe superconductor and its related systems have attracted much attention in the iron-based superconductors owing to their simple crystal structure and peculiar electronic and physical properties. The bulk FeSe superconductor has a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of ~8 K; it can be dramatically enhanced to 37 K at high pressure. On the other hand, its cousin system, FeTe, possesses a unique antiferromagnetic ground state but is non-superconducting. Substitution of Se by Te in the FeSe superconductor results in an enhancement of Tc up to 14.5 K and superconductivity can persist …
Polarized Raman-scattering spectra of superconducting, single-crystalline FeSe evidence pronounced phonon anomalies with temperature reduction. A large 6.5% hardening of the B_1g(Fe) phonon mode is attributed to the suppression of local fluctuations of the iron spin state with the gradual decrease of the iron paramagnetic moment. The ab-initio lattice dynamic calculations support this conclusion. The enhancement of the low-frequency spectral weight above the structural phase transition temperature T_s and its change below T_s is discussed in relation with the opening of an energy gap between l…
We comment two incorrect statements given in Ref.1. (A) - In order to show that the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) is very small and irrelevant for superconductivity in 1UC FeSe/SrTiO3 system, the authors of Ref.1 use an EPI coupling constant which does not enter in any theory of superconductivity. So, their conclusion on the smallness of the EPI in 1UC FeSe/SrTiO3 is incorrect. Accordingly, their coupling constant has also nothing to do with the EPI coupling with the forward scattering peak (EPI-FSP), which is proposed recently in order to explain high Tc in 1UC FeSe/SrTiO3. (B) - In Ref.1…
In contrast to bulk FeSe superconductor, heavily electron-doped FeSe-derived superconductors show relatively high Tc without hole Fermi surfaces and nodal superconducting gap structure, which pose great challenges on pairing theories in the iron-based superconductors. In the heavily electron-doped FeSe-based superconductors, the dominant factors and the exact working mechanism that is responsible for the high Tc need to be clarified. In particular, a clean control of carrier concentration remains to be a challenge for revealing how superconductivity and Fermi surface topology evolves with carr…
FeSe is an iron-based superconductor of immense current interest due to the large enhancements of Tc that occur when it is pressurized or grown as a single layer on an insulating substrate. Here we report precision measurements of its superconducting electrodynamics, at frequencies of 202 and 658 MHz and at temperatures down to 0.1 K. The quasiparticle conductivity reveals a rapid collapse in scattering on entering the superconducting state that is strongly reminiscent of unconventional superconductors such as cuprates, organics and the heavy fermion material CeCoIn5. At the lowest temperature…
Electronic correlations were long suggested not only to be responsible for the complexity of many novel materials, but also to form essential prerequisites for their intriguing properties. Electronic behavior of iron-based superconductors is far from conventional, while the reason for that is not yet understood. Here we present a combined study of the electronic spectrum in the iron-based superconductor FeSe by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Both methods in unison reveal strong deviations of the spectrum from single-electron a…
We have synthesized a Ba-doped FeSe superconductor using liquid ammonia, and investigated in detail the structure and composition of the Ba-FeSe phase. In the superconducting phase, both the Tc and the shielding fraction are almost unchanged even if the nominal composition of Ba is varied in the region from 0.3 to 0.7. The optimized Tc is 38.8 K. We have determined the structure of the superconducting phase with X-ray powder diffraction (using synchrotron radiation) and here describe the co-intercalation of Ba and NH3 molecules between the FeSe layers.
We present $β$-FeSe magnetotransport data, and describe them theoretically. Using a simplified microscopic model with two correlated effective orbitals, we determined the normal state electrical conductivity and Hall coefficient, using Kubo formalism. With model parameters relevant for Fe-chalcogenides, we describe the observed effect of the structural transition on the ab-plane electrical resistivity, as well as on the magnetoresistance. Temperature-dependent Hall coefficient data were measured at 16 Tesla, and their theoretical description improves upon inclusion of moderate electron correla…
When periodicity of crystal is disturbed by atomic disorder, its electronic state becomes inhomogeneous and band dispersion is obscured. In case of Fe-based superconductors, disorder of chalcogen/pnictogen height causes disorder of Fe 3d level splitting. Here, we report an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on FeSe_1-xTe_x with the chalcogen height disorder, showing that the disorder affects the Fe 3d band dispersions in an orbital-selective way instead of simple obscuring effect. The reverse of the Fe 3d level splitting due to the chalcogen height difference causes the splitting …
Heavily electron-doped and single-layer FeSe superconduct at much higher temperatures than bulk FeSe. There have been a number of proposals attempting to explain the origin of the enhanced transition temperature, including the proximity to magnetic, nematic and antiferro-orbital critical points, as well as possible strong interfacial phonon coupling in the case of single-layer FeSe. In this paper, we examine the effect of the various mechanisms in an effective two-band model. Within our model, the fluctuations associated with these instabilities contribute to different parts of the effective m…
The iron-based superconductor FeSe has attracted much recent attention because of its simple crystal structure, distinct electronic structure and rich physics exhibited by itself and its derivatives. Determination of its intrinsic electronic structure is crucial to understand its physical properties and superconductivity mechanism. Both theoretical and experimental studies so far have provided a picture that FeSe consists of one hole-like Fermi surface around the Brillouin zone center in its nematic state. Here we report direct observation of two hole-like Fermi surface sheets around the Brill…
Nematicity and magnetism are two key features in Fe-based superconductors, and their interplay is one of the most important unsolved problems. In FeSe, the magnetic order is absent below the structural transition temperature $T_{str}=90$K, in stark contrast that the magnetism emerges slightly below $T_{str}$ in other families. To understand such amazing material dependence, we investigate the spin-fluctuation-mediated orbital order ($n_{xz}\neq n_{yz}$) by focusing on the orbital-spin interplay driven by the strong-coupling effect, called the vertex correction. This orbital-spin interplay is v…
A general feature of unconventional superconductors is the existence of a superconducting dome in the phase diagram as a function of carrier concentration. For the simplest iron-based superconductor FeSe (with transition temperature Tc ~ 8 K), its Tc can be greatly enhanced by doping electrons via many routes, even up to 65 K in monolayer FeSe/SiTiO3. However, a clear phase diagram with carrier concentration for FeSe-derived superconductors is still lacking. Here, we report the observation of a series of discrete superconducting phases in FeSe thin flakes by continuously tuning carrier concent…
We have investigated the electronic structures of recently discovered superconductor FeSe by soft-x-ray and hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with high bulk sensitivity. The large Fe 3d spectral weight is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF), which is demonstrated to be a coherent quasi-particle peak. Compared with the results of the band structure calculation with local-density approximation, Fe 3d band narrowing and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting an importance of the electron correlation effect in FeSe. The self energy correction provides the larg…
The emergence of high transition temperature ($T_c$) superconductivity in bulk FeSe under pressure is associated with the tuning of nematicity and magnetism. However, sorting out the relative contributions from magnetic and nematic fluctuations to the enhancement of $T_c$ remains challenging. Here, we design and conduct a series of high-pressure experiments on FeSe thin flakes. We find that, as the thickness decreases, the nematic phase boundary on temperature-pressure phase diagrams remains robust while the magnetic order is significantly weakened. A local maximum of $T_c$ is observed outside…
Monolayer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 (STO) substrate show superconducting gap-opening temperatures (Tc) which are almost an order of magnitude higher than those of the bulk FeSe and are highest among all known Fe-based superconductors. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) observed "replica bands" suggesting the importance of the interaction between FeSe electrons and STO phonons. These facts rejuvenated the quest for Tc enhancement mechanisms in iron-based, especially iron-chalcogenide, superconductors. Here, we perform the first numerically-exact sign-problem-free quantum Monte C…
We compare electronic structures of single FeSe layer films on SrTiO$_3$ substrate (FeSe/STO) and K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$ superconductors obtained from extensive LDA and LDA+DMFT calculations with the results of ARPES experiments. It is demonstrated that correlation effects on Fe-3d states are sufficient in principle to explain the formation of the shallow electron -- like bands at the M(X)-point. However, in FeSe/STO these effects alone are apparently insufficient for the simultaneous elimination of the hole -- like Fermi surface around the $Γ$-point which is not observed in ARPES experiments…
The newly discovered superconductor FeSe1-x (x=0.08, Tconset=13.5 K at ambient pressure rising to 27 K at 1.48 GPa) exhibits a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic below 70 K at ambient pressure - the crystal structure in the superconducting state shows remarkable similarities to that of the REFeAsO1-xFx (RE = rare earth) superconductors
Superconductivity in FeSe has recently attracted a great deal of attention because it emerges out of an electronic nematic state of elusive character. Here we study both the electronic normal state and the superconducting gap structure using heat-capacity measurements on high-quality single crystals. The specific-heat curve, from 0.4 K to Tc = 9.1 K, is found to be consistent with a recent gap determination using Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference [P. O. Sprau et al., Science 357, 75 (2017)], however only if nodes are introduced on either the electron or the hole Fermi-surface sheets. Our a…
Inelastic neutron-scattering experiments have been carried out on polycrystalline samples of the FeSe$_{1-x}$ superconductors. We report the phonon density of states for FeSe$_{1-x}$ with Tc$\approx$8 K. The phonon cutoff frequency is observed around 40 meV. No significant change is observed across the superconducting transition. The measurements support the published first-principles calculations [A. Subedi et al., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{78}, 134514 (2008)].
The iron-based superconductor FeSe offers a unique possibility to study the interplay of superconductivity with purely nematic as well magnetic-nematic order by pressure (p) tuning. By measuring specific heat under p up to 2.36GPa, we study the multiple phases in FeSe using a thermodynamic probe. We conclude that superconductivity is bulk across the entire p range and competes with magnetism. Our analysis suggests that superconducting and magnetic fluctuations exist over a wide temperature range above the respective bulk transition temperatures, whenever magnetism is present. These observation…
The in-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of the iron selenide superconductor FeSe$_x$ ($T_c$ = 8.8 K) were measured down to 120 mK and up to 14.5 T ($\simeq 3/4 H_{c2}$). In zero field, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at $ T \to 0$ is only about 16 $μ$W K$^{-2}$ cm$^{-1}$, less than 4% of its normal state value. Such a small $κ_0/T$ does not support the existence of nodes in the superconducting gap. More importantly, the field dependence of $κ_0/T$ in FeSe$_x$ is very similar to that in NbSe$_2$, a typical multi-gap s-wave superconductor. We consider our data as strong evidence for multi-gap nod…
Non-Fermi liquids are strange metals whose physical properties deviate qualitatively from those of conventional metals due to strong quantum fluctuations. In this paper, we report transport measurements on the FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ superconductor, which has a quantum critical point of a nematic order without accompanying antiferromagnetism. We find that in addition to a linear-in-temperature resistivity $ρ_{xx}\propto T$, which is close to the Planckian limit, the Hall angle varies as $\cot θ_{\rm H} \propto T^2$ and the low-field magnetoresistance is well scaled as $Δρ_{xx}/ρ_{xx}\propto \tan^2 θ…
The dream of room temperature superconductors has inspired intense research effort to find routes for enhancing the superconducting transition temperature (Tc). Therefore, single-layer FeSe on a SrTiO3 substrate, with its extraordinarily high Tc amongst all interfacial superconductors and iron based superconductors, is particularly interesting, but the mechanism underlying its high Tc has remained mysterious. Here we show through isotope effects that electrons in FeSe couple with the oxygen phonons in the substrate, and the superconductivity is enhanced linearly with the coupling strength atop…
Interface-enhanced high-temperature superconductivity in one unit-cell (UC) FeSe film on SrTiO3(001) (STO) substrate has recently attracted much attention in condensed matter physics and material science. Here, by ex situ transport measurements, we report on the superconductivity in FeSe ultra-thin films with different thickness on STO substrate. We find that the onset superconducting transition temperature (Tc) decreases with increasing film thickness of FeSe, which is opposite to the behavior usually observed in traditional superconductor films. By systematic post-annealing of 5 UC FeSe film…
Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations and upper critical magnetic field ($H\_{c2}$) of the iron-based superconductor FeSe ($T\_c$ = 8.6 K) have been studied by tunnel diode oscillator-based measurements in magnetic fields of up to 55 T and temperatures down to 1.6 K. Several Fourier components enter the SdH oscillations spectrum with frequencies definitely smaller than predicted by band structure calculations indicating band renormalization and reconstruction of the Fermi surface at low temperature, in line with previous ARPES data. The Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model accounts for the tempera…
Superconductivity arises from two distinct quantum phenomena: electron pairing and long-range phase coherence. In conventional superconductors, the two quantum phenomena generally take place simultaneously, while the electron pairing occurs at higher temperature than the long-range phase coherence in the underdoped high-Tc cuprate superconductors. Recently, whether electron pairing is also prior to long-range phase coherence in single-layer FeSe film on SrTiO3 substrate is under debate. Here, by measuring Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate, we unambiguously reveal a pseudoga…
The mechanism of high temperature superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors remains an outstanding issue in condensed matter physics. The electronic structure, in particular the Fermi surface topology, is considered to play an essential role in dictating the superconductivity. Recent revelation of distinct electronic structure and possible high temperature superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc above 65 K in the single-layer FeSe films grown on the SrTiO3 substrate provides key information on the roles of Fermi surface topology and interface in inducing or enhancing super…
We have investigated the effect of atomic substitutions in the FeSe system, which exhibits the simplest crystal structure among the iron-based superconductors. An enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature Tc was observed with the substitution of S or Te for Se; the Tc increased with S substitution by up to 20 %, and also increased with Te substitution up to 75 %. In contrast, Co or Ni substitutions for the Fe site significantly suppressed superconductivity. In this work we present a detailed description of the substitution technique employed to determine Tc in the FeSe system.
We use density functional theory to study the structure and the band structure of the monolayer FeSe deposited on the SrTiO$_3$ substrate with the additional layer of Se between them. Top of the SrTiO$_3$ is formed by the double TiO layer with and without oxygen vacancies. Several structures with different arrangements of the additional Se atoms above the double TiO layer is considered. Equilibrium structures were found and the band structures for them were obtained. Near the $Γ=(0,0,0)$ point of the Brillouin zone, the hole Fermi surface pockets persist and, additionally, an electron pocket a…
Elucidating the nature of the magnetism of a high-temperature superconductor is crucial for establishing its pairing mechanism. The parent compounds of the cuprate and iron-pnictide superconductors exhibit Néel and stripe magnetic order, respectively. However, FeSe, the structurally simplest iron-based superconductor, shows nematic order (Ts = 90 K), but not magnetic order in the parent phase, and its magnetic ground state is intensely debated. Here, we report inelastic neutron-scattering experiments that reveal both stripe and Néel spin fluctuations over a wide energy range at 110 K. On enter…
An SDW antiferromagnetic (SDW-AF) low temperature phase transition is generally observe and the AF spin fluctuations are considered to play an important role for the superconductivity paring mechanism in FeAs superconductors. However, a similar magnetic phase transition is not observed in FeSe superconductors, which has caused considerable discussion. We report on the intrinsic electronic states of FeSe as elucidated by transport measurements under magnetic fields using a high quality single crystal. A mobility spectrum analysis, an ab initio method that does not make assumptions on the transp…
The superconducting FeSe films were successfully fabricated using the electrochemical synthesis. The composition ratio of Fe and Se can be controlled by the electric potential and pH value. We found that the FeSe films deposited at the electric potential -1.75 V and pH 2.3 show the superconducting transition at 3.5 K. The establishment of this electrochemical synthesis technique will provide many advantages for application.
The electronic structure of the strained FeSe0.5Te0.5 superconductor has been investigated from first principles. Our calculation results indicate that the influence of hydrostatic, biaxial or uniaxial compressive stress on the density of states at the Fermi level is insignificant. The overall shape of the Fermi-surface (FS) nesting function for FeSe0.5Te0.5 at ambient pressure resembles that of its parent compound, FeSe, but under the ab-plane compressive strain. In these two systems, changes of their FSs under various stress conditions are qualitatively almost the same. However, in FeSe0.5Te…
Monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO$_3$ provides a new playground for high-Tc superconductivity. A recent study shows the importance of stripy instability for superconductivity enhancement in FeSe/SrTiO3. However, it is still under debate whether such a stripe phase is ubiquitously bound to the interfacial superconductivity. Here, we report on molecular beam epitaxy growth and low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study of FeSe films on BaTiO$_3$(001). We find that the stripe phase is more prominent in FeSe/BaTiO$_3$. Long-range stripes exist in bilayer and triple-layer FeSe films at 4 K and…
Here we establish a combined electronic phase diagram of isoelectronic FeSe1-xSx (0.19 > x > 0.0) and FeSe1-yTey (0.04 < y < 1.0) single crystals. The FeSe1-yTey crystals with y = 0.04 - 0.30 are grown by a hydrothermal ion-deintercalation (HID) method. Based on combined experiments of the specific heat, electrical transport, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, no signature of the tetragonal-symmetry-broken transition to orthorhombic (nematic) phase is observed in the HID FeSe1-yTey samples, as compared with the FeSe1-xSx samples showing this transition at Ts. A ubiquitous dip-like …
We report on the synthesis of large single crystals of a new FeSe-layer superconductor Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2. X-ray powder diffraction, neutron powder-diffraction and magnetization measurements have been used to compare the crystal structure and the magnetic properties of Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2 with those of the recently discovered potassium intercalated system KxFe2Se2. The new compound Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2 shows a slightly lower superconducting transition temperature (Tc=27.4 K) in comparison to 29.5 in K0.8(FeSe0.98)2). The volume of the crystal unit cell increases by replacing K by Cs - the c-parameter g…
Magnetic fluctuations in the molecular-intercalated FeSe superconductor Li{x}(ND2){y}(ND3){1-y}Fe2Se2 (Tc = 43K) have been measured by inelastic neutron scattering from a powder sample. The strongest magnetic scattering is observed at a wave vector Q ~ 1.4 A^{-1}, which is not consistent with the (pi,0) nesting wave vector that characterizes magnetic fluctuations in several other iron-based superconductors, but is close to the (pi, pi/2) position found for A{x}Fe{2-y}Se2 systems. At the energies probed (~ 5kB Tc), the magnetic scattering increases in intensity with decreasing temperature below…
Distinctive superconducting behaviors between bulk and monolayer FeSe make it challenging to obtain a unified picture of all FeSe-based superconductors. We investigate the ultrafast quasiparticle (QP) dynamics of an intercalated superconductor (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe, which is a bulk crystal but shares a similar electronic structure with single-layer FeSe on SrTiO3. We obtain the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) constant λA1g (0.22 +/- 0.04), which well bridges that of bulk FeSe crystal and single-layer FeSe on SrTiO3. Moreover, we find that such a positive correlation between λA1g and superconducti…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy has been used to reveal signatures of a bosonic mode in the local quasiparticle density of states of superconducting FeSe films. The mode appears below Tc as a 'dip-hump' feature at energy Ω~ 4.7 kBTc beyond the superconducting gap Δ. Spectra on strained regions of the FeSe films reveal simultaneous decreases in Δand Ω. This contrasts with all previous reports on other high-Tc superconductors, where Δlocally anti-correlates with Ω. A local strong coupling model is found to reconcile the discrepancy well, and to provide a unified picture of the electron-boson cou…
The discovery of high-temperature (Tc) superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 raised a fundamental question whether high Tc is commonly realized in monolayer iron-based superconductors. Tetragonal FeS is a key material to resolve this issue because bulk FeS is a superconductor with Tc comparable to that of isostructural FeSe. However, difficulty in synthesizing tetragonal monolayer FeS due to its metastable nature has hindered further investigations. Here we report elucidation of band structure of monolayer FeS on SrTiO3, enabled by a unique combination of in-situ topotactic reaction an…
Motivated by the high superconducting transition temperature of monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3, we propose a potential three-dimensional high-temperature superconductor superlattice FeSe-SrTiO3 and study its structural stability and electronic structure using density functional theory. We find that the binding energy between the FeSe and SrTiO3 layers is about 0.7 eV per (Fe2Se2) unit and that it saturates already within a single TiO2 atomic layer of SrTiO3. In addition we analyzed the dynamical stability of the superlattice and compared it to the case of bulk SrTiO3.
