The isothermal entropy change and the adiabatic temperature change for the exactly solved spin-1/2 Fisher's super-exchange antiferromagnet are rigorously calculated in order to examine magnetocaloric properties of the model in a vicinity of the second-order phase transition. It is shown that the large inverse magnetocaloric effect occurs around the temperature interval $T_c(h\neq0) < T < T_c(h=0)$ for any magnetic-field change $Δh: 0 \to h$. The most pronounced inverse magnetocaloric effect can be found for the magnetic-field change, which coincides with the critical field of a zero-temperature phase transition from the antiferromagnetically ordered ground state to the paramagnetic one.
The thermodynamic and magnetocaloric properties of a generalized spin-$(1/2,s)$ Fisher's super-exchange antiferromagnet are exactly investigated by using the decoration-iteration mapping transformation. Besides the critical temperature, sublattice magnetization, total magnetization, entropy and specific heat, the isothermal entropy change and adiabatic temperature change are rigorously calculated in order to examine cooling efficiency of the model in a vicinity of the first- and second-order phase transitions. It is shown that an enhanced inverse magnetocaloric effect occurs around the tempera…
Low-temperature magnetization processes and magnetocaloric properties of a geometrically frustrated spin-1 Blume-Capel model on a triangular lattice are studied by Monte Carlo simulations. The model is found to display qualitatively different behavior depending on the sign of the single-ion anisotropy D. For positive values of D we observe two magnetization plateaus, similar to the spin-1/2 Ising antiferromagnet, and negative isothermal entropy changes for any field intensity. For a range of small negative values of D there are four magnetization plateaus and the entropy changes can be either …
Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetic Ising (IA) and ferromagnetic spin ice (SI) models on a nanocluster with a `Star of David' topology, including next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions, are studied by an exact enumeration. In an external field applied in characteristic directions of the respective models, depending on the NNN interaction sign and magnitude, the ground state magnetization of the IA model is found to display up to three intermediate plateaus at fractional values of the saturation magnetization, while the SI model shows only one …
Owing to a high degree of geometrical frustration an Ising antiferromagnet on a kagome lattice (IAKL) is known to exhibit no long-range ordering at any temperature, including the ground state. Nevertheless, at low temperatures it shows a strongly correlated, highly fluctuating regime known as a cooperative paramagnet or classical spin liquid. In the ground state it is characterized by a macroscopic degeneracy which translates to a relatively large value of the residual entropy. It has been shown that the presence of a macroscopic degeneracy associated with geometrical frustration below the sat…
The magnetocaloric effect is studied at the transition to saturation in the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the simplest two-dimensional lattices, namely the square and the triangular lattice. Numerical results are presented for the entropy which are consistent with identical universal properties. However, the absolute values of the entropy are bigger on the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice than on the non-frustrated square lattice, indicating that frustration improves the magnetocaloric properties.
The thermodynamics of a spin-1/2 magnetic multilayer system with antiferromagnetic interplanar couplings is studied using the Pair Approximation method. The special attention is paid to magnetocaloric properties, quantified by isothermal entropy change. The multilayer consists of two kinds of magnetic planes, one of which is diluted. The intraplanar couplings in both planes have arbitrary anisotropy ranging between Ising and isotropic Heisenberg interactions. The phase diagram related to the occurrence of magnetic compensation phenomenon is constructed and discussed. Then the isothermal entrop…
An external magnetic field induces large relative changes in the entropy of one-dimensional quantum spin systems at finite temperatures. This leads to a magnetocaloric effect, i.e. a change in temperature during an adiabatic (de)magnetization process. Several examples of one-dimensional spin-1/2 models are studied by employing the Jordan-Wigner transformation and exact diagonalization. During an adiabatic (de)magnetization process temperature drops in the vicinity of a field-induced zero-temperature quantum phase transition. Comparing different levels of frustration, we find that more frustrat…
The spin-1/2 Ising octahedron and dodecahedron with a unique antiferromagnetic interaction display an outstanding magnetization jump at zero magnetic field, which consequently leads to a giant magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization. In the present work we report temperature dependences of two basic magnetocaloric response functions: the isothermal entropy change and the adiabatic change of temperature. It is shown that the Ising octahedron and dodecahedron generally exhibit a large negative isothermal entropy change upon increasing of the magnetic field, which serves in evi…
An adiabatic demagnetization process is studied in Gd2Ti2O7, a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice. In contrast to conventional paramagnetic salts, this compound can exhibit a temperature decrease by a factor of ten in the temperature range below the Curie-Weiss constant. The most efficient cooling is observed in the field interval between 120 and 60 kOe corresponding to a crossover between saturated and spin-liquid phases. This phenomenon indicates that a considerable part of the magnetic entropy survives in the strongly correlated state. According to the theoreti…
We study the magnetocaloric effect for the integrable antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain with competing interactions. We computed the Grüneisen parameter, which is closely related to the magnetocaloric effect, for the quantum spin chain in the thermodynamical limit. This is obtained by means of the solution of a set of non-linear integral equations, which describes the thermodynamics of the model. We also provide results for the entropy $S$ and the isentropes in the $(H,T)$ plane.
Magnetization process and adiabatic demagnetization of the antiferromagnetic Ising spin clusters with the shape of regular polyhedra (Platonic solids) are exactly examined within the framework of a simple graph-theoretical approach. While the Ising cube as the only unfrustrated (bipartite) spin cluster shows just one trivial plateau at zero magnetization, the other regular Ising polyhedra (tetrahedron, octahedron, icosahedron and dodecahedron) additionally display either one or two intermediate plateaux at fractional values of the saturation magnetization. The nature of highly degenerate groun…
We study the magnetocaloric effect for the integrable antiferromagnetic high-spin chain. We present an exact computation of the Grüneisen parameter, which is closely related to the magnetocaloric effect, for the quantum spin-s chain on the thermodynamical limit by means of Bethe ansatz techniques and the quantum transfer matrix approach. We have also calculated the entropy S and the isentropes in the (H,T) plane. We have been able to identify the quantum critical points H_c^{(s)}=2/(s+1/2) looking at the isentropes and/or the characteristic behaviour of the Grüneisen parameter.
The magnetization process and adiabatic demagnetization of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg clusters with the shape of regular polyhedra (tetrahedron, octahedron, cube, icosahedron and dodecahedron) are examined using the exact diagonalization method. It is demonstrated that a quantum (xy) part of the XXZ exchange interaction is a primary cause for presence of additional intermediate magnetization plateaux and steps, which are totally absent in the limiting Ising case. The only exception to this rule is the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg tetrahedron, which shows just a quantitative shift…
Magnetization, entropy and magnetocaloric properties of various geometrically frustrated tetrahedra-based Ising antiferromagnetic nanoclusters with corner-, edge-, and face-sharing topologies are studied by exact enumeration. It is found that the studied properties strongly depend on the nanocluster topology and can be very different from those of a single tetrahedron as well as the pyrochlore lattice formed by an infinite number of corner-sharing tetrahedra. From the magnetocaloric point of view an important difference from the latter two systems is the absence of the ground-state zero-magnet…
The magnetothermodynamics of strongly frustrated classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on kagome, garnet, and pyrochlore lattices is examined. The field induced adiabatic temperature change (dT/dH)_S is significantly larger for such systems compared to ordinary non-frustrated magnets and also exceeds the cooling rate of an ideal paramagnet in a wide range of fields. An enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect is related to presence of a macroscopic number of soft modes in frustrated magnets below the saturation field. Theoretical predictions are confirmed with extensive Monte Carlo simulations…
Effects of a single-ion anisotropy on magnetocaloric properties of selected spin-$s\geq 1$ antiferromagnetic Ising clusters with frustration-inducing triangular geometry are studied by exact enumeration. It is found that inclusion of the single-ion anisotropy parameter $D$ can result in a much more complex ground-state behavior, which is also reflected in a magnetocaloric effect (MCE) at finite temperatures. For negative $D$ (easy-plane anisotropy) with increasing $s$ the ground-state magnetization as a function of the external field gradually shows increasing number of plateaus of various hei…
We compute the entropy of antiferromagnetic quantum spin-s chains in an external magnetic field using exact diagonalization and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The magnetocaloric effect, i.e., temperature variations during adiabatic field changes, can be derived from the isentropes. First, we focus on the example of the spin-s=1 chain and show that one can cool by closing the Haldane gap with a magnetic field. We then move to quantum spin-s chains and demonstrate linear scaling with $s$ close to the saturation field. In passing, we propose a new method to compute many low-lying excited states…
A spin-1/2, Ising trilayered ferrimagnetic system on square Bravais lattice is studied, employing Monte-Carlo simulation with the single spin-flip Metropolis algorithm. The bulk of such a system is formed by three layers, each of which is composed entirely either by A or B type of atoms, resulting in two distinct compositions: ABA and AAB and two different types of magnetic interactions: ferromagnetic between like atoms and antiferromagnetic between unlike atoms. For such systems, Inverse Absolute of Reduced Residual Magnetisation is the absolute value of the ratio of the extremum of the magne…
The paper presents a theoretical study of magnetocaloric properties of polyoxovanadate molecular magnet V6 containing 6 vanadium ions carrying quantum spins $S = 1/2$. The characteristic property of such structure is the presence of two weakly interacting spin triangles with all-antiferromagnetic couplings. The properties of the system are described using the exact numerical diagonalization approach applied to the quantum Heisenberg model and utilizing a field ensemble formalism. The dependence of the magnetic entropy and magnetic specific heat on the temperature and external magnetic field is…
The entropy and cooling rate of the both antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 double sawtooth IsingHeisenberg model and mixed-spin (1,1/2) double sawtooth Ising-Heisenberg model on the distorted ladders are rigorously investigated under an adiabatic demagnetization process using the quantum transfer-matrix technique. The models include the XXZ interaction between the interstitial Heisenberg dimers, the Ising coupling between nearest-neighbor spins of the legs and rungs, and additional cyclic four-spin exchange (ring exchange) in the square plaquette of each block. Close to field-induced quantum phase tr…
The magnetization curves and magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization of antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg clusters with the shape of Johnson's solids (triangular cupola, square cupola and pentagonal cupola) are investigated using the exact numerical diagonalization for different values of the exchange anisotropy ranging in between the Ising and fully isotropic limit. It is demonstrated that spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg cupolae display, in comparison with their Ising counterparts, at least one more magnetization plateau. The novel magnetization plateaux extends over a …
We calculate the entropy and cooling rate of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ chain under an adiabatic demagnetization process using the quantum transfer-matrix technique and non-linear integral equations. The limiting case of the Ising chain (corresponding to infinitely large anisotropy) is presented for comparison. Our exact results for the Heisenberg chain are used as a crosscheck for the numerical exact diagonalization as well as Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and allow us to benchmark the numerical methods. Close to field-induced quantum phase transitions we observe a large magnetocalo…
We have investigated the magnetocaloric effects in antiferromagnets and compared them with those in ferromagnets using Monte Carlo simulations. In antiferromagnets, the magnetic entropy reaches a maximum value at a finite magnetic field when the temperature is fixed below the Néel temperature. Using the fact, we proposed a protocol for applying magnetic fields to achieve the maximum efficiency for magnetic refrigeration in antiferromagnets. In particular, we found that at low temperatures, antiferromagnets are more useful for magnetic refrigeration than ferromagnets.
We consider the effects of the magnetic field on the frustrated phase states of the dilute Ising chain, especially, the behavior of the magnetic entropy change and the isentropic dependence of the temperature on the magnetic field, which are the key parameters of the magnetocaloric effect. The found temperature dependences of entropy demonstrate the nonequivalence of frustrated phases in the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic cases. In the antiferromagnetic case, the nonzero magnetic field at certain parameters causes a charge ordering for nonmagnetic impurities at a half-filling, while in th…
The distribution of the zeros of the partition function in the complex temperature plane (Fisher zeros) of the two-dimensional Q-state Potts model is studied for non-integer Q. On $L\times L$ self-dual lattices studied ($L\le8$), no Fisher zero lies on the unit circle $p_0=e^{iθ}$ in the complex $p=(e^{βJ}-1)/\sqrt{Q}$ plane for Q<1, while some of the Fisher zeros lie on the unit circle for Q>1 and the number of such zeros increases with increasing Q. The ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic properties of the Potts model are investigated using the distribution of the Fisher zeros. For the Potts…
We study the low-temperature thermodynamic properties of a number of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets which support localized magnon states in the vicinity of the saturation field. For this purpose we use 1) a mapping of the low-energy degrees of freedom of spin systems onto the hard-core object lattice gases and 2) an exact diagonalization of finite spin systems of up to N=30 sites. The considered spin systems exhibit universal behavior which is determined by a specific hard-core object lattice gas representing the independent localized magnon states. We test the lattice gas description by…
The generalized Fisher super-exchange antiferromagnetic model with uniaxial crystal-field anisotropy is exactly investigated using an extended mapping technique. An exact relation between partition function of the studied system and that one of the standard zero-field spin-1/2 Ising model on the corresponding lattice is obtained applying the decoration-iteration transformation. Consequently, exact results for all physical quantities are derived for arbitrary spin values S of decorating atoms. Particular attention is paid to the investigation of the effect of crystal-field anisotropy and extern…
Magnetization plateaus and enhanced magnetocaloric effect of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg and Heisenberg double sawtooth ladder with four-spin interaction
Above the saturation field, geometrically frustrated quantum antiferromagnets have dispersionless low-energy branches of excitations corresponding to localized spin-flip modes. Transition into a partially magnetized state occurs via condensation of an infinite number of degrees of freedom. The ground state below the phase transition is a magnon crystal, which breaks only translational symmetry and preserves spin-rotations about the field direction. We give a detailed review of recent works on physics of such phase transitions and present further theoretical developments. Specifically, the low-…
The temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility, chi, of diluted two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnets Rb2Co1-xMgxF4,0<=x<=0.4, is investigated in the limit of vanishing external field. Novel data for x = 0.15 are compared with those obtained for x = 0 and 0.4 by Breed et al. (1969) and Ikeda (1983), respectively. Whereas in the pure case, x = 0, Fishers (1962) "energetic contribution" dominates, Aharony et al.s (1979,1986) "random contribution" becomes increasingly important with increasing x. Taking into account both terms not only with respect to the global ordering temperature, T…
