The results presented in this paper have been later improved by generating new data especially closer to x = 0.5. A re-analysis of the scaling collapse leads to the value 1.269 for $ν$. The estimate of $\tilde{z}$ using this value is $\simeq$ 1.82. Hence it can not be strongly stated that $\tilde{z}$ is different from 2
We investigate the dynamical behaviour of the Ising model under a zero temperature quench with the initial fraction of up spins $0\leq x\leq 1$. In one dimension, the known results for persistence probability are verified; it shows algebraic decay for both up and down spins asymptotically with different exponents. It is found that the conventional finite size scaling is valid here. In two dimensions however, the persistence probabilities are no longer algebraic; in particular for $x\leq 0.5$, persistence for the up (minority) spins shows the behaviour $P_{min}(t) \sim t^{-γ}\exp(-(t/τ)^δ)$ with time $t$, while for the down (majority) spins, $P_{maj}(t)$ approaches a finite value. We find that the timescale $τ$ diverges as $(x_c-x)^{- λ}$, where $x_c=0.5$ and $λ\simeq2.31$. The exponent $γ$ varies as $θ_{2d}+c_0(x_c-x)^β$ where $θ_{2d}\simeq0.215$ is very close to the persistence exponent in two dimensions; $β\simeq1$. The results in two dimensions can be understood qualitatively by studying the exit probability, which for different system size is found to have the form $E(x) = f\big[(\frac{x-x_c}{x_c})L^{1/ν}\big]$, with $ν\approx 1.47$. This result suggests that $τ\sim L^{\tilde{z}}$, where $\tilde{z} = \fracλν = 1.57 \pm 0.11$ is an exponent not explored earlier.
Numerical simulations by Tanaka and coworkers indicate that glass forming systems of moderately polydisperse hard-core particles, in both two and three dimensions, exhibit diverging correlation lengths. These correlations are described by Ising-like critical exponents, and are associated with diverging, Vogel-Fulcher-Tamann, structural relaxation times. Related simulations of thermalized hard disks indicate that the curves of pressure versus packing fraction for different polydispersities exhibit a sequence of transition points, starting with a liquid-hexatic transition for the monodisperse ca…
A Microcanonical Finite Site Ansatz in terms of quantities measurable in a Finite Lattice allows to extend phenomenological renormalization (the so called quotients method) to the microcanonical ensemble. The Ansatz is tested numerically in two models where the canonical specific-heat diverges at criticality, thus implying Fisher-renormalization of the critical exponents: the 3D ferromagnetic Ising model and the 2D four-states Potts model (where large logarithmic corrections are known to occur in the canonical ensemble). A recently proposed microcanonical cluster method allows to simulate syst…
We consider an Ising ferromagnet endowed with zero-temperature spin-flip dynamics and examine the evolution of the Ising quadrant, namely the spin configuration when the minority phase initially occupies a quadrant while the majority phase occupies three remaining quadrants. The two phases are then always separated by a single interface which generically recedes into the minority phase in a self-similar diffusive manner. The area of the invaded region grows (on average) linearly with time and exhibits non-trivial fluctuations. We map the interface separating the two phases onto the one-dimensi…
The two-dimensional Ising model with fixed magnetization is studied using Monte Carlo techniques. At the coexistence line, the macroscopic, extensive droplet of minority spins becomes thermally unstable by breaking up into microscopic clusters. Intriguing finite--size effects as well as singularities of thermal and cluster properties associated with the transition are discussed.
We study two-dimensional Ising spins, evolving through reinforcement learning using their state, action, and reward. The state of a spin is defined as whether it is in the majority or minority with its nearest neighbours. The spin updates its state using an ε-greedy algorithm. The parameter ε plays the role equivalent to the temperature in the Ising model. We find a phase transition from long-ranged ordered to a disordered state as we tune ε from small to large values. In analogy with the phase transition in the Ising model, we calculate the critical ε and the three critical exponents β, γ, ν …
Spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with XYZ Heisenberg pair interaction and two different Ising quartic interactions is exactly solved with the help of the generalized star-square transformation, which establishes a precise mapping equivalence with the corresponding eight-vertex model on a square lattice generally satisfying Baxter's zero-field (symmetric) condition. The investigated model exhibits a remarkable weak-universal critical behavior with two marked wings of critical lines along which critical exponents vary continuously with the interaction parameters. Both wings of critical lines merg…
We study hysteresis for a two-dimensional, spin-1/2, nearest-neighbor, kinetic Ising ferromagnet in an oscillating field, using Monte Carlo simulations. The period-averaged magnetization is the order parameter for a proposed dynamic phase transition (DPT). To quantify the nature of this transition, we present the first finite-size scaling study of the DPT for this model. Evidence of a diverging correlation length is given, and we provide estimates of the transition frequency and the critical indices $β$, $γ$ and $ν$.

The approach to equilibrium is studied for long-range quantum Ising models where the interaction strength decays like r^{-α} at large distances r with an exponent $α$ not exceeding the lattice dimension. For a large class of observables and initial states, the time evolution of expectation values can be calculated. We prove analytically that, at a given instant of time t and for sufficiently large system size N, the expectation value of some observable <A>(t) will practically be unchanged from its initial value <A>(0). This finding implies that, for large enough N, equilibration effectively oc…
We study the dynamics of the batch minority game, with random external information, using generating functional techniques a la De Dominicis. The relevant control parameter in this model is the ratio $α=p/N$ of the number $p$ of possible values for the external information over the number $N$ of trading agents. In the limit $N\to\infty$ we calculate the location $α_c$ of the phase transition (signaling the onset of anomalous response), and solve the statics for $α>α_c$ exactly. The temporal correlations in global market fluctuations turn out not to decay to zero for infinitely widely separated…
Detailed mean field and Monte Carlo studies of the dynamic magnetization-reversal transition in the Ising model in its ordered phase under a competing external magnetic field of finite duration have been presented here. Approximate analytical treatment of the mean field equations of motion shows the existence of diverging length and time scales across this dynamic transition phase boundary. These are also supported by numerical solutions of the complete mean field equations of motion and the Monte Carlo study of the system evolving under Glauber dynamics in both two and three dimensions. Class…
Recent numerical simulations indicate that several different equilibrium glass transitions may be characterized by diverging correlation lengths, and that these divergences are described by a non-mean-field, Ising-like, critical exponent. I argue here that a minimal model of polydisperse, hard-core particles can be reformulated in terms of Ising spins. The two spin states correspond, at high pressure, to two compact, local topologies -- "solidlike" and "liquidlike" -- whose average volumes per particle are nearly identical for strongly frustrated, glass forming systems. The critical correlatio…
A dimer mean-field model for the Ising spin-glass is presented. Despite its simplicity it captures some of the essential features of the spin-glass physics. The distribution of the single-spin magnetization is determined from a self-consistent integral equation. By solving the self-consistency condition numerically, we find that there are two temperature scales characterizing the glass transition. At the first, higher temperature, the glass order parameter becomes non-vanishing, and at the second, freezing temperature, it saturates to its maximal value. The effect of magnetic field and the exi…
Using Monte Carlo simulations we show that the three-dimensional Ising model with four-spin (plaquette) interactions has some characteristic glassy features. The model dynamically generates diverging energy barriers, which give rise to slow dynamics at low temperature. Moreover, in a certain temperature range the model possesses a metastable (supercooled liquid) phase, which is presumably supported by certain entropy barriers. Although extremely strong, metastability in our model is only a finite-size effect and sufficiently large droplets of stable phase divert evolution of the system toward …
We report the results of mean field and the Monte Carlo study of the dynamic magnetization-reversal transition in the Ising model, brought about by the application of an external field pulse applied in opposition to the existing order before the application of the pulse. The transition occurs at a temperature T below the static critical temperature T_c without any external field. The transition occurs when the system, perturbed by the external field pulse competing with the existing order, jumps from one minimum of free energy to the other after the withdrawal of the pulse. The parameters cont…
Using theories of phase ordering kinetics and of renormalization group, we derive analytically the relaxation times of the long wave-length fluctuations of a phase-separated domain boundary in the vicinity of (and below) the critical temperature, in the planar Ising universality class. For a conserved order parameter, the relaxation time grows like $Λ^3$ at wave-length $Λ$ and can be expressed in terms of parameters relevant at the microscopic scale: lattice spacing, bulk diffusion coefficient of the minority phase, and temperature. These results are supported by numerical simulations of 2D Is…
The $q=2$ random cluster model is studied in the context of two mean field models: The Bethe lattice and the complete graph. For these systems, the critical exponents that are defined in terms of finite clusters have some anomalous values as the critical point is approached from the high density side which vindicates the results of earlier studies. In particular, the exponent $\tilde γ^\prime$ which characterises the divergence of the average size of finite clusters is 1/2 and $\tildeν^\prime$, the exponent associated with the length scale of finite clusters is 1/4. The full collection of expo…
We consider long, finite-width strips of Ising spins with randomly distributed couplings. Frustration is introduced by allowing both ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions. Free energy and spin-spin correlation functions are calculated by transfer-matrix methods. Numerical derivatives and finite-size scaling concepts allow estimates of the usual critical exponents $γ/ν$, $α/ν$ and $ν$ to be obtained, whenever a second-order transition is present. Low-temperature ordering persists for suitably small concentrations of frustrated bonds, with a transition governed by pure--Ising exponents. Cont…
We study the critical properties of a two--dimensional Ising model with competing ferromagnetic exchange and dipolar interactions, which models an ultra-thin magnetic film with high out--of--plane anisotropy in the monolayer limit. We present numerical evidence showing that two different scenarios appear in the model for different values of the exchange to dipolar intensities ratio, namely, a single first order stripe - tetragonal phase transition or two phase transitions at different temperatures with an intermediate Ising nematic phase between the stripe and the tetragonal ones. Our results …
Many of the processes that underly neural computation are carried out by ion channels embedded in the plasma membrane, a two-dimensional liquid that surrounds all cells. Recent experiments have demonstrated that this membrane is poised close to a liquid-liquid critical point in the Ising universality class. Here we use both exact and stochastic techniques on the lattice Ising model to explore the ramifications of proximity to criticality for proteins that are allosterically coupled to Ising composition modes. Owing to diverging generalized susceptibilities, such a protein's activity becomes st…
The structure of the three-dimensional random field Ising magnet is studied by ground state calculations. We investigate the percolation of the minority spin orientation in the paramagnetic phase above the bulk phase transition, located at [Delta/J]_c ~= 2.27, where Delta is the standard deviation of the Gaussian random fields (J=1). With an external field H there is a disorder strength dependent critical field +/- H_c(Delta) for the down (or up) spin spanning. The percolation transition is in the standard percolation universality class. H_c ~ (Delta - Delta_p)^{delta}, where Delta_p = 2.43 +/…
We introduce a variational method for the approximation of ground states of strongly interacting spin systems in arbitrary geometries and spatial dimensions. The approach is based on weighted graph states and superpositions thereof. These states allow for the efficient computation of all local observables (e.g. energy) and include states with diverging correlation length and unbounded multi-particle entanglement. As a demonstration we apply our approach to the Ising model on 1D, 2D and 3D square-lattices. We also present generalizations to higher spins and continuous-variable systems, which al…
We consider a dynamic network of individuals that may hold one of two different opinions in a two-party society. As a dynamical model, agents can endlessly create and delete links to satisfy a preferred degree, and the network is shaped by \emph{homophily}, a form of social interaction. Characterized by the parameter $J \in [-1,1]$, the latter plays a role similar to Ising spins: agents create links to others of the same opinion with probability $(1+J)/2$, and delete them with probability $(1-J)/2$. Using Monte Carlo simulations and mean-field theory, we focus on the network structure in the s…
