Coupling a microscopic mechanical resonator to a nano-scale quantum system enables control of the mechanical resonator via the quantum system, and vice versa. The coupling is usually achieved through functionalization of the mechanical resonator but this results in additional mass and dissipation channels. An alternative is an intrinsic coupling based on strain. We employ here a monolithic semiconductor system. The nano-scale quantum system is a quantum dot; the mechanical resonator a microscopic trumpet which simultaneously optimizes the mechanical and photonic properties. The quantum dot transition is driven resonantly. Via the resonance fluorescence, we observe mechanical Brownian motion even at 4K, and demonstrate a coupling to mechanical modes of different types. We identify a mechanical mode with a cooperativity larger than one. We show analytically that the Heisenberg limit on displacement measurement can be reached with an embedded two-level system in the case of a transform-limited optical emitter with perfect photon detection. We argue that operation close to the Heisenberg limit is achievable with state-of-the-art quantum dot devices.
Silicon carbide (SiC) has become a key player in realization of scalable quantum technologies due to its ability to host optically addressable spin qubits and wafer-size samples. Here, we have demonstrated optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) with resonant excitation, and clearly identified the ground state energy levels of the NV centers in 4H-SiC. Coherent manipulation of NV centers in SiC has been achieved with Rabi and Ramsey oscillations. Finally, we show the successful generation and characterization of single nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in SiC employing ion implantation. Our re…
We study the dynamics of a mechanical resonator parametrically coupled to a driven dissipative quantum emitter in the ultra-strong coupling regime. We show that this regime is fully compatible with a semi-classical treatment, and we derive master equations for the emitter and the resonator. We show that the fluctuations of the driven emitter's population induce the non-symmetrical scattering of the mechanical quadratures. At long timescales, such scattering back-acts on the emitter, which eventually decouples from the driving light. This optical noise at the quantum limit is observable with st…
Two dimensional materials are becoming increasingly popular as a platform for studies of quantum phenomena and for the production of prototype quantum technologies. Quantum emitters in 2D materials can host two level systems that can act as qubits for quantum information processing. Here, we characterize the behavior of position-controlled quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride at cryogenic temperatures. Over two dozen sites, we observe an ultra-narrow distribution of the zero phonon line at ~436 nm, together with strong linearly polarized emission. We employ resonant excitation to charac…
We investigate the quantum dynamics of a quantum oscillator coupled with the most upper state of a three-level $Λ-$ type system. The two transitions of the three-level emitter, possessing orthogonal dipole moments, are coherently pumped with a single or two electromagnetic field sources, respectively. We have found ranges for flexible lasing or cooling phenomena referring to the quantum oscillator's degrees of freedom. This is due to asymmetrical decay rates and quantum interference effects leading to population transfer among the relevant dressed states of the emitter's subsystem with which t…
Resonant excitation of solid-state quantum emitters enables coherent control of quantum states and generation of coherent single photons, which are required for scalable quantum photonics applications. However, these systems can often decay to one or more intermediate dark states or spectrally jump, resulting in the lack of photons on resonance. Here, we present an optical co-excitation scheme which uses a weak non-resonant laser to reduce transitions to a dark state and amplify the photoluminescence from quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Utilizing a two-laser repumping scheme…
We address the consequences of backaction in the unidirectional coupling of two cascaded open quantum subsystems connected to the same reservoir at different spatial locations. In the spirit of [H. J. Carmichael, Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 2273 (1993)], the second subsystem is a two-level atom, while the first transforms from a driven empty cavity to a perturbative QED configuration and ultimately to a driven Jaynes-Cummings (JC) oscillator through a varying light-matter coupling strength. For our purpose, we appeal at first to the properties of resonance fluorescence in the statistical description …
Asymptotic Discord and Entanglement of Non-Resonant Harmonic Oscillators in an Equilibrium Environment
We use the scattering matrix formalism to analyze photon blockade in coherently-driven CQED systems with a weak drive. By approximating the weak coherent drive by an input single- and two-photon Fock state, we reduce the computational complexity of the transmission and the two-photon correlation function from exponential to polynomial in the number of emitters. This enables us to easily analyze cavity-based systems containing $\sim$50 quantum emitters with modest computational resources. Using this approach we study the coherence statistics of polaritonic photon blockade while increasing the n…

A laser model is formulated in terms of quantum harmonic oscillators. Emitters in the low lasing states are usual harmonic oscillators, and emitters in the upper states are inverted harmonic oscillators. Diffusion coefficients, consistent with the model and necessary for solving quantum nonlinear laser equations analytically, are found. Photon number fluctuations of the lasing mode and fluctuations of the population of the lasing states are calculated. Collective Rabi splitting peaks are predicted in the intensity fluctuation spectra of the superradiant lasers. Population fluctuation mechanism…
Closely-spaced quantum emitters coherently sharing excitation can release their energy faster than suggested by a simple sum over their individual emission rates - a phenomenon known as superradiance. Here, we show that the assumption of closely-spaced emitters can be relaxed in the context of resonant energy transfer, instead finding that certain symmetrical arrangements of donors are just as effective. We derive exact expressions for the superradiant fidelity in such situations, finding some surprising results such as complete suppression of the rate for a single acceptor within a homogeneou…

To characterize the statistics and indistinguishability of a source, it is common to measure the correlation functions of the emitted field using various interferometers. Here, we present a theoretical framework for the computation of the correlation functions of a two-level system that is resonantly driven by a realistic noisy cw excitation laser. Analytic expressions of the first and second-order auto-correlation functions are obtained where the various contributions of the noisy excitation source are correctly taken into account. We predict that, even in the low power regime, the noise sour…
Superradiance is the enhanced emission of photons from quantum emitters collectively coupling to the same optical mode. However, disorder in the resonant frequencies of the quantum emitters can perturb this effect. In this paper, we study the interplay between superradiance and spectral disorder in a dynamically modulated Tavis-Cummings model. Through numerical simulations and analytical calculations, we show that the effective cooperativity of the superradiant mode, which is always formed over an extensive number of emitters, can be multiplicatively enhanced with a quantum control protocol mo…

Solid-state single-photon emitters are attractive for realization of integrated quantum systems due to their experimental convenience and scalability. Unfortunately, however, their complex mesoscopic environments cause photons from different emitters to be spectrally distinguishable. Here we demonstrate spectral alignment of two solid-state single-photon emitters by utilizing the strain gradient. Multiple germanium vacancy (GeV) color centers in diamond are created in fabricated diamond microcantilevers using focused ion beam implantation. The strain response of the electronic energy levels of…
Efficient on-chip integration of single-photon emitters imposes a major bottleneck for applications of photonic integrated circuits in quantum technologies. Resonantly excited solid-state emitters are emerging as near-optimal quantum light sources, if not for the lack of scalability of current devices. Current integration approaches rely on cost-inefficient individual emitter placement in photonic integrated circuits, rendering applications impossible. A promising scalable platform is based on two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors. However, resonant excitation and single-photon emission of waveg…
We use a versatile model to evaluate the multipartite entanglement and the nonclassical light generation in optical parametric oscillators, exploring the differences between doubly and triply resonant cavity configurations. We demonstrate the entanglement of the pump mode with converted fields in both situations, and the fundamental differences of oscillators using parametric down conversion and four wave mixing processes as the intracavity amplification technique. The strong correlations involving the sidebands of the pump and converted fields gives the signatures of a rich dynamic of multipa…

A Brownian harmonic oscillator, which dissipates energy either by friction or via emission of electromagnetic radiation, is considered. This Brownian emitter is driven by the surrounding thermo-quantum fluctuations, which are theoretically described by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. It is shown how the AbrahamLorentz force leads to dependence of the half-width on the peak frequency of the oscillator amplitude spectral density. It is also found that for the case of a charged particle, moving in vacuum at zero temperature, its root-mean-square velocity fluctuation is a universal constant, …
We investigate two-dimensional atomic arrays as a platform to modify the electromagnetic environment of individual quantum emitters. Specifically, we demonstrate that control over emission linewidths, resonant frequency shifts, and local enhancement of driving fields is possible due to strong dipole-dipole interactions within ordered, subwavelength atom configurations. We demonstrate that these effects can be used to dramatically enhance coherent dipole-dipole interactions between distant quantum emitters within an atom array. Possible experimental realizations and potential applications are d…
Single photon emitters with narrow linewidths are highly sought after for applications in quantum information processing and quantum communications. In this letter, we report on a bright, highly polarized near infrared single photon emitter embedded in diamond nanocrystals with a narrow, sub GHz optical linewidths at 10K. The observed zero phonon line at ~ 780 nm is optically stable under low power resonant excitation and blue shifts as the excitation power increases. Our results highlight the prospect for using new near infrared color centers in nanodiamonds for quantum applications.
A simple calculation method for photon statistics of frequency-filtered fields is proposed. This method, based on eigenvalue decompositions of superoperators, allows us to study effects on the photon statistics of spectral filtering by various types of filters, such as Gaussian and rectangular filters as well as Lorentzian filters, which is not possible by conventional approaches. As an example, this method is applied to a simulation of quantum dot single-photon emitters, where we found the efficient choice of the filter types to have pure single photons depends on the excitation conditions i.…
The paper shows mechanisms of both the pumping and energy decay of an "isolated" oscillator. The oscillator is only non-resonantly coupled with the adjacent oscillator which resonantly interacts with the thermal bath environment. Under these conditions the "isolated" oscillator begins interacting with the thermal bath environment of the adjacent oscillator. The conclusion is based on the kinetic equation derived relative to anti-rotating terms of the initial Hamiltonian, with the latter being the Hamiltonian of two oscillators and environment of one of them.
The resonant quantum dynamics of an excited two-level emitter is investigated via classical modulation of its transition frequency while simultaneously the radiator interacts with a broadband electromagnetic field reservoir. The frequency of modulation is selected to be of the order of the bare-state spontaneous decay rate. In this way, one can induce quantum interference effects and, consequently, quantum coherences among multiple decaying transition pathways. Depending on the modulation depth and its absolute phase, both the spontaneous emission and the frequency shift may be conveniently mo…
We study the existence of bound states in the continuum for a system of n two-level quantum emitters, coupled with a one-dimensional boson field, in which a single excitation is shared among different components of the system. The emitters are fixed and equally spaced. We first consider the approximation of distant emitters, in which one can find degenerate eigenspaces of bound states corresponding to resonant values of energy, parametrized by a positive integer. We then consider the full form of the eigenvalue equation, in which the effects of the finite spacing and the field dispersion relat…
Resonant dissipation-enabled adiabatic quantum state transfer processes between the polarization degrees of freedom of a single photon wave packet and quantum emitters are discussed. These investigations generalize previous work [N. Trautmann and G. Alber, Phys. Rev. A 93, 053807 (2015)] by taking into account the properties of the spontaneously emitted photon wave packet and of non adiabatic corrections. It is demonstrated that the photonic degrees of freedoms of these adiabatic one-photon quantum state transfer processes can be used for the passive, heralded and deterministic preparation of …
We analyze the quantum dynamics of a two-level emitter in a resonant microcavity with optical feedback provided by a distant mirror (i.e., a half-cavity) with a focus on stabilizing the emitter-microcavity subsystem. Our treatment is fully carried out in the framework of cavity quantum electrodynamics. Specifically, we focus on the dynamics of a perturbed dark state of the emitter to ascertain its stability (existence of time oscillatory solutions around the candidate state) or lack thereof. In particular, we find conditions under which multiple feedback modes of the half cavity contribute to …
Quantum emitters, such as q-dots and dye molecules, in the immediate vicinity of plasmonic nanostructures, resonantly excite surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) under incoherent pump. The efficiency in the excitation of SPPs increases as the number of the emitters, because the SPP field synchronizes emission of the coupled emitters, in analogy with the superadiance (SR) of coupled emitters in free space. Using fully quantum mechanical model for two emitters coupled to a single gold nanorod, we predict up to 15% increase in the emission yield of single emitter compared to only one emitter coupled…
Solid-state quantum emitters have emerged as a leading quantum memory for quantum networking applications. However, standard optical characterization techniques are neither efficient nor repeatable at scale. In this work, we introduce and demonstrate spectroscopic techniques that enable large-scale, automated characterization of color centers. We first demonstrate the ability to track color centers by registering them to a fabricated machine-readable global coordinate system, enabling systematic comparison of the same color center sites over many experiments. We then implement resonant photolu…
In this work, we study wave propagation in generic Hermitian local periodic baths, and investigate the effects of anisotropy and quasi-breaking of periodicity on resonant emission into the band of the bath. We asymptotically decompose the Green's function into long-range travelling waves composed of all wavevectors (near-)resonant at the emitter frequency, and rapidly decaying evanescent waves. Our approximation then converges exponentially with increasing source-receiver separation $ρ$ when resonant wavepackets with group velocity parallel to $ρ$ exist. In hyperbolic media this condition may …
