Let p be a prime and G be a torsion-free abelian group. A homomorphism from G to the p-adic integers is called a p-adic functional on G. If G has finite rank, then G can be represented as an inductive limit of an inductive sequence of free abelian groups of the same rank, and the group of all p-adic functionals on G is described in terms of this inductive sequence. If this inductive sequence is stationary--i.e., if the homomorphism is the same at every stage--then the group of p-adic functionals is described in particularly simple terms, as a right-submodule that is invariant under the module homomorphism that this group homomorphism induces. It is shown that the class consisting of all such stationary inductive limits is closed under quasi-isomorphism; this strengthens a previous classification result of Dugas.
Let p be a prime. A p-adic functional on a torsion-free abelian group G is a group homomorphism from G to the p-adic integers. The group of all such p-adic functionals is viewed as a p-adic dual group of G, and is studied from the point of view of functional analysis. An analogue of the Hahn--Banach Theorem is proved; this result shows that there are sufficiently many p-adic functionals to be interesting. There is a natural homomorphism from G to its p-adic double dual, and one main result that is proved is that the image of G in this double dual is dense in an appropriate topology. This is us…
Let $X$ be a compact torsion abelian group. In this paper, we show that an extension of $F_{p}$ by $X$ splits where $F_{p}$ is the p-adic number group and $p$ a prime number. Also, we show that an extension of a torsion-free, non-divisible LCA group by $X$ is not split.
We adapt the theory of non-Archimedean uniformization to construct a smooth surface from a lattice in PGL3(Q2) that has nontrivial torsion. It turns out to be a fake projective plane, commensurable with Mumford's fake plane yet distinct from it and the other fake planes that arise from 2-adic uniformization by torsion-free groups. As part of the proof, and of independent interest, we compute the homotopy type of the Berkovich space of our plane.
Let G be a p-adic Lie group and Ad be the adjoint representation of G on its Lie algebra. It was claimed in the literature that the kernel K of Ad always has an abelian open normal subgroup. We show by means of a counterexample that this assertion is false; it can even happen that K=G but G has no abelian subnormal subgroup except for the trivial group. The arguments are based on auxiliary results on subgroups of free products with central amalgamation.
It is known that every torsion-free abelian group of finite rank has a maximal completely decomposable summand that is unique up to isomorphism. We show that groups of infinite rank need not have maximal completely decomposable summands, but when they do, this summand is unique up to isomorphism.
An indecomposable decomposition of a torsion-free abelian group $G$ of rank $n$ is a decomposition $G=A_1\oplus\cdots\oplus A_t$ where $A_i$ is indecomposable of rank $r_i$ so that $\sum_i r_i=n$ is a partition of $n$. The group $G$ may have decompositions that result in different partitions of $n$. We address the problem of characterising those sets of partitions of $n$ which can arise from indecomposable decompositions of a torsion-free abelian group.
Let $A$ be a finite rank torsion--free abelian group. Then there exist direct decompositions $A=B\oplus C$ where $B$ is completely decomposable and $C$ has no rank 1 direct summand. In such a decomposition $B$ is unique up to isomorphism and $C$ unique up to near-isomorphism.
Let G be a torsion-free abelian group of finite rank. The orbits of the action of Aut(G) on the set of maximal independent subsets of G determine the indecomposable decompositions of G. G contains a direct sum of pure strongly indecomposable groups as a subgroup of finite index.
Let G be a torsion--free abelian group of finite rank. The automorphism group Aut(G) acts on the set of maximal independent subsets of G. The orbits of this action are the isomorphism classes of indecomposable decompositions of G. G contains a direct sum of strongly indecomposable groups as a characteristic subgroup of finite index, giving rise to a classification of finite rank strongly indecomposable torsion--free abelian groups.
A non-trivial finitely generated pro-$p$ group $G$ is said to be strongly hereditarily self-similar of index $p$ if every non-trivial finitely generated closed subgroup of $G$ admits a faithful self-similar action on a $p$-ary tree. We classify the solvable torsion-free $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ groups of dimension less than $p$ that are strongly hereditarily self-similar of index $p$. Moreover, we show that a solvable torsion-free $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ group of dimension less than $p$ is strongly hereditarily self-similar of index $p$ if and only if it is isomorphic to the maximal pro-$p$…
The authors have shown previously that every locally pro-p contraction group decomposes into the direct product of a p-adic analytic factor and a torsion factor. It has long been known that p-adic analytic contraction groups are nilpotent. We show here that the torsion factor is nilpotent too, and hence that every locally pro-p contraction group is nilpotent.
According to Lazard, every p-adic Lie group contains an open pro-p subgroup which is saturable. This can be regarded as the starting point of p-adic Lie theory, as one can naturally associate to every saturable pro-p group G a Lie lattice L(G) over the p-adic integers. Essential features of saturable pro-p groups include that they are torsion-free and p-adic analytic. In the present paper we prove a converse result in small dimensions: every torsion-free p-adic analytic pro-p group of dimension less than p is saturable. This leads to useful consequences and interesting questions. For instance,…
For any countable torsion subgroup $H$ of an unbounded Abelian group $G$ there is a complete Hausdorff group topology $τ$ such that $H$ is the von Neumann radical of $(G,τ)$. In particular, any unbounded torsion countable Abelian group admits a complete Hausdorff minimally almost periodic (MinAP) group topology. If $G$ is a bounded torsion countably infinite Abelian group, then it admits a MinAP group topology if and only if all its leading Ulm-Kaplansky invariants are infinite. In such a case, a MinAP group topology can be chosen to be complete.
A space X is selectively sequentially pseudocompact if for every sequence (U_n) of non-empty open subsets of X, one can choose a point x_n in each U_n in such a way that the sequence (x_n) has a convergent subsequence. Let G be a group from one of the following three classes: (i) V-free groups, where V is an arbitrary variety of Abelian groups; (ii) torsion Abelian groups; (iii) torsion-free Abelian groups. Under the Singular Cardinal Hypothesis SCH, we prove that if G admits a pseudocompact group topology, then it can also be equipped with a selectively sequentially pseudocompact group topolo…
Let T be an abelian group and lambda an uncountable regular cardinal. We consider the question of whether there is a lambda-universal group G^* among all torsion-free abelian groups G of cardinality less than or equal to lambda satisfying Ext(G,T)=0. Here G^* is said to be lambda-universal for T if, whenever a torsion-free abelian group G of cardinality less than or equal to lambda satisfies Ext(G,T)=0, then there is an embedding of G into G^*. For large classes of abelian groups T and cardinals lambda it is shown that the answer is consistently no. In particular, for T torsion, this solves a …
We study some close relationships between the classes of transitive, fully transitive and Krylov transitive torsion-free Abelian groups. In addition, as an application of the achieved assertions, we resolve some oldstanding problems, posed by Krylov-Mikhalev-Tuganbaev in their monograph [17]. Specifically, we answer Problem 44 from there in the affirmative by constructing a Krylov transitive torsion-free Abelian group which is neither fully transitive nor transitive. This extends to the torsion-free case certain similar results in the p-torsion case, obtained by Braun et al. in J. Algebra (201…

We prove that the Borel space of torsion-free Abelian groups with domain $ω$ is Borel complete, i.e., the isomorphism relation on this Borel space is as complicated as possible, as an isomorphism relation. This solves a long-standing open problem in descriptive set theory, which dates back to the seminal paper on Borel reducibility of Friedman and Stanley from 1989.
We show that there is a countable universal abelian p-group for purity, i.e., a countable abelian p-group $U$ such that every countable abelian p-group purely embeds in $U$. This is the last result needed to provide a complete solution to Problem 5.1 of [Fuc15] below $\aleph_ω$. We introduce $\aleph_0$-strongly homogeneous p-groups, show that there is a universal abelian p-group for purity which is $\aleph_0$-strongly homogeneous, and completely characterize the countable $\aleph_0$-strongly homogeneous p-groups.
It has been claimed by Halmos in [Comment on the real line, Bull. Amer. Math. Soc., 50 (1944), 877-878] that if G is a Hausdorff locally compact topological abelian group and if the character group of G is torsion free then G is divisible. We prove that such claim is false, by presenting a family of counterexamples. While other counterexamples are known (see [D. L. Armacost, The structure of locally compact abelian groups, 1981]), we also present a family of stronger counterexamples, showing that even if one assumes that the character group of G is both torsion free and divisible, it does not …
On the torus group, on the group of p-adic integers and on the p-adic solenoid, we give a construction of an arbitrary weakly infinitely divisible probability measure using a random element with values in a product of (possibly infinitely many) subgroups of the real numbers. As a special case of our results, we have a new construction of the Haar measure on the p-adic solenoid.
We classify up to coarse equivalence all countable abelian groups of finite torsion free rank. The Q-cohomological dimension and the torsion free rank are the two invariants that give us such classification. We also prove that any countable abelian group of finite torsion free rank is coarsely equivalent to Z^n + H where H is a direct sum (possibly infinite) of cyclic groups. A partial generalization to countable abelian groups of the Gromov rigidity theorem for abelian groups is shown.
