Distance-hereditary graphs form an important class of graphs, from the theoretical point of view, due to the fact that they are the totally decomposable graphs for the split-decomposition. The previous best enumerative result for these graphs is from Nakano et al. (J. Comp. Sci. Tech., 2007), who have proven that the number of distance-hereditary graphs on $n$ vertices is bounded by ${2^{\lceil 3.59n\rceil}}$.
In this paper, using classical tools of enumerative combinatorics, we improve on this result by providing an exact enumeration of distance-hereditary graphs, which allows to show that the number of distance-hereditary graphs on $n$ vertices is tightly bounded by ${(7.24975\ldots)^n}$---opening the perspective such graphs could be encoded on $3n$ bits. We also provide the exact enumeration and asymptotics of an important subclass, the 3-leaf power graphs.
Our work illustrates the power of revisiting graph decomposition results through the framework of analytic combinatorics.
In 2010, Bousquet-Mélou et al. defined sequences of nonnegative integers called ascent sequences and showed that the ascent sequences of length $n$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the interval orders, i.e., the posets not containing the poset $\mathbf{2}+\mathbf{2}$. Through the use of generating functions, this provided an answer to the longstanding open question of enumerating the (unlabeled) interval orders. A semiorder is an interval order having a representation in which all intervals have the same length. In terms of forbidden subposets, the semiorders exclude $\mathbf{2}+\mathbf{2…
In this paper, we build on recent results by Chauve et al. (2014) and Bahrani and Lumbroso (2017), which combined the split-decomposition, as exposed by Gioan and Paul, with analytic combinatorics, to produce new enumerative results on graphs---in particular the enumeration of several subclasses of perfect graphs (distance-hereditary, 3-leaf power, ptolemaic). Our goal was to study a simple family of graphs, of which the split-decomposition trees have prime nodes drawn from an enumerable (and manageable!) set of graphs. Cactus graphs, which we describe in more detail further down in this paper…
We examine the problem of exactly or approximately counting all perfect matchings in hereditary classes of nonbipartite graphs. In particular, we consider the switch Markov chain of Diaconis, Graham and Holmes. We determine the largest hereditary class for which the chain is ergodic, and define a large new hereditary class of graphs for which it is rapidly mixing. We go on to show that the chain has exponential mixing time for a slightly larger class. We also examine the question of ergodicity of the switch chain in a arbitrary graph. Finally, we give exact counting algorithms for three classe…
Our main objective is the COMPRESSED enumeration (based on wildcards) of all minimal hitting sets of general hypergraphs. To the author's best knowledge the only previous attempt towards compression, due to Toda, is based on BDD's and much different from our techniques. Numerical experiments show that traditional one-by-one enumeration schemes cannot compete against compressed enumeration when the degree of compression is high. Our method works particularly well in these two cases: Either compressing all e x a c t hitting sets, or all m i n i m u m - cardinality hitting sets. In many aspects t…
We obtain exact expressions counting the satisfiable 2-SAT formulae and describe the structure of associated implication digraphs. Our approach is based on generating function manipulations. To reflect the combinatorial specificities of the implication digraphs, we introduce a new kind of generating function, the Implication generating function, inspired by the Graphic generating function used in digraph enumeration. Using the underlying recurrences, we make accurate numerical predictions of the phase transition curve of the 2-SAT problem inside the critical window. We expect these exact formu…
Using a result of Gessel and Reutenauer, we find a simple formula for the number of cyclic permutations with a given descent set, by expressing it in terms of ordinary descent numbers (i.e., those counting all permutations with a given descent set). We then use this formula to show that, for almost all sets $I \subseteq [n-1]$, the fraction of size-$n$ permutations with descent set $I$ which are $n$-cycles is asymptotically $1/n$. As a special case, we recover a result of Stanley for alternating cycles. We also use our formula to count the cycles that do not have two consecutive descents.

We completely generalize previous results related to the counting of connected Feynman diagrams. We use a generating function approach, which encodes the Wick contraction combinatorics of the respective connected diagrams. Exact solutions are found for an arbitrary number of external legs, and a general algorithm is implemented for this calculus. From these solutions, we calculate many asymptotics expansion terms for a simple analytical tool (Taylor expansion theorem). Our approach offers new perspectives in the realm of Feynman diagrams enumeration (or zero-dimensional quantum field theory).
In previous work, we gave asymptotic counting results for the number of tree-child and normal networks with $k$ reticulation vertices and explicit exponential generating functions of the counting sequences for $k=1,2,3$. The purpose of this note is two-fold. First, we make some corrections to our previous approach which overcounted the above numbers and thus gives erroneous exponential generating functions (however, the overcounting does not effect our asymptotic counting results). Secondly, we use our (corrected) exponential generating functions to derive explicit formulas for the number of t…
We study how certain invariants of numerical semigroups relate to the number of second kind gaps. Furthermore, given two fixed non-negative integers F and k, we provide an algorithm to compute all the numerical semigroups whose Frobenius number is F and which have exactly k second kind gaps.
Recently Mansour and Shattuck studied $(k,a)$-paths and gave formulas that relate the total number of humps (peaks) in all $(k,a)$-paths to the number of super $(k,a)$-paths. These results generalize earlier results of Regev on Dyck paths and Motzkin paths. Their proofs are based on generating functions and they asked for bijective proofs for their results. In this paper we first give bijective proofs of Mansour and Shattuck's results, then we extend our study to $(n,m)$-Dyck paths. We give a bijection that relates the total number of peaks in all $(n,m)$-Dyck paths to certain free $(n,m)$-pat…
We show a first-order asymptotics result for the number of galled networks with $n$ leaves. This is the first class of phylogenetic networks of {\it large} size for which an asymptotic counting result of such strength can be obtained. In addition, we also find the limiting distribution of the number of reticulation nodes of a galled networks with $n$ leaves chosen uniformly at random. These results are obtained by performing an asymptotic analysis of a recent approach of Gunawan, Rathin, and Zhang (2020) which was devised for the purpose of (exactly) counting galled networks. Moreover, an old …
Enumeration of symmetric centered rhombus tilings of a hexagon
一个六边形的菱形镶嵌被称为居中,如果它包含中心菱形。我们计算了边长为$a, b, a, a, b, a$且居中的六边形的垂直对称菱形镶嵌的个数。当$a$为奇数而$b$为偶数时,这表明$a, b, a, a, b, a$六边形的随机垂直对称菱形平铺居中的概率与$a, b, a, a, b, a$六边形的随机菱形平铺居中的概率完全相同。这也导致了一个因式分解定理的数量的所有菱形镶嵌的六边形是中心。
An associative magic square is a magic square such that the sum of any 2 cells at symmetric positions with respect to the center is constant. The total number of associative magic squares of order 7 is enormous, and thus, it is not realistic to obtain the number by simple backtracking. As a recent result, Artem Ripatti reported the number of semi-magic squares of order 6 (the magic squares of 6x6 without diagonal sum conditions) in 2018. In this research, with reference to Ripatti's method of enumerating semi-magic squares, we have calculated the total number of associative magic squares of or…
Two signed graphs are called switching isomorphic to each other if one is isomorphic to a switching of the other. The wheel $W_n$ is the join of the cycle $C_n$ and a vertex. For $0 \leq p \leq n$, $ψ_{p}(n)$ is defined to be the number of switching non-isomorphic signed $W_n$ with exactly $p$ negative edges on $C_n$. The number of switching non-isomorphic signed $W_n$ is denoted by $ψ(n)$. In this paper, we compute the values of $ψ_{p}(n)$ for $p=0,1,2,3,4,n-4,n-3,n-2,n-1,n$ and of $ψ(n)$ for $n=4,5,...,10$. Our method of obtaining $ψ_{p}(n)$ not only count the switching non-isomorphic signed…
