The effective potential neighboring the corotation resonance region in barred galaxies is shown to be strongly time-dependent in any rotating frame because of the competition of nearby perturbations of similar strengths with differing rotation speeds. Contrary to the generally adopted assumption, that in the bar rotating frame the corotation region should possess four stationary equilibrium points (Lagrange points), with high quality N-body simulations we localize the instantaneous equilibrium points and find that they circulate or oscillate broadly in azimuth with respect to the pattern speeds of the inner or outer perturbations. This implies that at the particle level the Jacobi integral is not well conserved around the corotation radius. That is, angular momentum exchanges decouple from energy exchanges, enhancing the chaotic diffusion of stars through the corotation region.
Bars may induce morphological features, such as rings, through their resonances. Previous studies suggested that the presence of 'dark-gaps', or regions of a galaxy where the difference between the surface brightness along the bar major axis and along the bar minor axis are maximal, can be attributed to the location of bar corotation. Here, using GALAKOS, a high-resolution N-body simulation of a barred galaxy, we test this photometric method's ability to identify the bar corotation resonance. Contrary to previous work, our results indicate that 'dark-gaps' are a clear sign of the location of t…
We study the bar pattern speeds and corotation radii of 225 barred galaxies, using IFU data from MaNGA and the Tremaine-Weinberg method. Our sample, which is divided between strongly and weakly barred galaxies identified via Galaxy Zoo, is the largest that this method has been applied to. We find lower pattern speeds for strongly barred galaxies than for weakly barred galaxies. As simulations show that the pattern speed decreases as the bar exchanges angular momentum with its host, these results suggest that strong bars are more evolved than weak bars. Interestingly, the corotation radius is n…
Athanassoula (2014) has claimed that measurements of the ratio of corotation radius to bar length in galaxies do not place a constraint on the disk to halo mass ratio. Her conclusion was based on a series of simulations published by Athanassoula et al. (2013). Here we show that these results are, in fact, consistent with previous work on the slow down of bars due to dynamical friction because gas inflow rearranges the disk mass before the bar settles. It therefore remains true that a bar rotating sufficiently fast that corotation is not far beyond the bar end requires a near maximum disk.
We have obtained two-dimensional velocity fields in the ionized gas of a set of 8 double-barred galaxies, at high spatial and spectral resolution, using their H$α$ emission fields measured with a scanning Fabry-Perot spectrometer. Using the technique by which phase reversals in the non-circular motion indicate a radius of corotation, taking advantage of the high angular and velocity resolution we have obtained the corotation radii and the pattern speeds of both the major bar and the small central bar in each of the galaxies; there are few such measurements in the literature. Our results show t…
We test the idea that bar pattern speeds decrease with time owing to angular momentum exchange with a dark matter halo. If this process actually occurs, then the locations of the corotation resonance and other resonances should generally increase with time. We therefore derive the angular velocity $Ω$ and epicyclic frequency $κ$ as functions of galactocentric radius for 85 barred galaxies using photometric data. Mass maps are constructed by assuming a dynamical mass-to-light ratio and then solving the Poisson equation for the gravitatonal potential. The location of Lindblad resonances and the …
We investigate the relations between the properties of bars and their host galaxies in a sample of 77 nearby barred galaxies, spanning a wide range of morphological types and luminosities, with 34 SB0-SBa and 43 SBab-SBc galaxies. The sample includes all the galaxies with reliable direct measurement of their bar pattern speed based on long-slit or integral-field stellar spectroscopy using the Tremaine-Weinberg method. We limited our analysis to the galaxies with a relatively small relative error on the bar pattern speed (smaller than 50 per cent) and not hosting an ultrafast bar. For each gala…
A method which we have developed for determining corotation radii, has allowed us to map in detail the radial resonant structures of barred spiral galaxies. Here we have combined this information with new determinations of the bar strength and the pitch angle of the innermost segment of the spiral arms to find relationships between these parameters of relevance to the dynamical evolution of the galaxies. We show how (1) the bar mass fraction, (2) the scaled bar angular momentum, (3) the pitch angle, and (4) the shear parameter vary along the Hubble sequence, and we also plot along the Hubble s…
We characterize the radial migration of stars in the disk plane by calculating the diffusion coefficient and the diffusion time-scale for a bulge-disk N-body self-consistent system with a marginally-stable Toomre-Q parameter. We find that diffusion is not constant in time, but follows the evolution of the bar, and becomes maximum near the corotation region and in the external disk region, where asymmetric patterns develop.
We investigate the orbital dynamics of a \textit{barred-spiral} model when the system is rotating slowly and corotation is located beyond the end of the spiral arms. In the characteristic of the central family of periodic orbits we find a "bistable region". In the response model we observe a ring surrounding the bar and spiral arms starting tangential to the ring. This is a morphology resembling barred-spiral systems with inner rings. However, the dynamics associated with this structure in the case we study is different from that of a typical bar ending close to corotation. The ring of our mod…
We aim at investigating the formation process of weak bars by measuring their properties in a sample of 29 nearby SAB galaxies, spanning a wide range of morphological types and luminosities. The sample galaxies were selected to have an intermediate inclination, a bar at an intermediate angle between the disc minor and major axes, and an undisturbed morphology and kinematics to allow the direct measurement of the bar pattern speed. Combining our analysis with previous studies, we compared the properties of weak and strong bars. We measured the bar radius and strength from the r-band images avai…
The manifold theory of barred-spiral structure provides a dynamical mechanism explaining how spiral arms beyond the ends of galactic bars can be supported by chaotic flows extending beyond the bar's co-rotation zone. We discuss its applicability to N-body simulations of secularly evolving barred galaxies. In these simulations, we observe consecutive `incidents' of spiral activity, leading to a time-varying disc morphology. Besides disc self-excitations, we provide evidence of a newly noted excitation mechanism related to the `off-centering' effect: particles ejected in elongated orbits at majo…
Density waves in galaxy disks have been proposed over the years, in a variety of specific models, to explain spiral arm structure and its relation to the mass distribution, notably in barred galaxies. An important parameter in dynamical density wave theories is the corotation radius, the galactocentric distance at which the stars and gas rotate at the same speed as the quasi-static propagating density wave. Determining corotation, and the pattern speed of a bar have become relevant to tests of cosmologically based theories of galaxy evolution involving the dynamical braking of bars by interact…
This paper describes an automatic isophotal fitting procedure that succeeds, without the support of any visual inspection of neither the images nor the ellipticity/P.A. radial profiles, at extracting a fairly pure sample of barred LTGs among thousands of optical images from the SDSS. The procedure relies on the methods described in Consolandi et al. (2016) to robustly extract the photometrical properties of a large sample of local SDSS galaxies and is tailored to extract bars on the basis of their well-known peculiarities in their P.A. and ellipticity profiles. It has been run on a sample of 5…
Dark gaps are commonly seen in early-to-intermediate type barred galaxies having inner and outer rings or related features. In this paper, the morphologies of 54 barred and oval ringed galaxies have been examined with the goal of determining what the dark gaps are telling us about the structure and evolution of barred galaxies. The analysis is based mainly on galaxies selected from the Galaxy Zoo 2 database and the Catalogue of Southern Ringed Galaxies. The dark gaps between inner and outer rings are of interest because of their likely association with the L4 and L5 Lagrangian points that woul…
In this paper, we apply a method identified by Puerari & Dottori (1997) to find the corotation radii (CR) in spiral galaxies. We apply our method to 57 galaxies, 17 of which have already have their CR locations determined using other methods. The method we adopted entails taking Fourier transforms along radial cuts in the u, g, r, i, and z wavebands and comparing the phase angles as a function of radius between them. The radius at which the phase angles cross indicates the location of the corotation radius. We then calculated the relative bar pattern speed, $\mathcal{R}$, and classified the ba…
Bars in disc-dominated galaxies are able to drive gas inflow inside the corotation radius, thus enhancing the central star formation rate (SFR). Previous work, however, has found that disc-dominated galaxies with centrally suppressed SFR frequently host a bar. Here we investigate possible causes for the suppression of central SFR in such cases. We compare physical properties of a sample of disc-dominated barred galaxies with high central SFR (HC galaxies) with those of a sample of disc-dominated barred galaxies with low central SFR (LC galaxies). We find that the two samples have on average si…
We measure the bar properties (length, strength, and corotation radius) of a sample of barred low surface brightness (LSBs) galaxies and compare to previous results for both LSBs and high surface brightness galaxy (HSBs) samples. In addition, we present new optical $\textit{B}$- and $\textit{I}$-band surface brightness profiles, magnitudes, and colours. We find that bars in LSBs are shorter and weaker when compared with those in HSBs galaxies. Based on analysis of four different bar length measures on simulated galaxy images, we find our bar length measure based on azimuthal light profiles is …
We characterize empirically the radial diffusion of stars in the plane of a typical barred disk galaxy by calculating the local spatial diffusion coefficient and diffusion time-scale for bulge-disk-halo N-body self-consistent systems which initially differ in the Safronov-Toomre-Q_T parameter. We find different diffusion scenarios that depend on the bar strength and on the degree of instability of the disk. Marginally stable disks, with Q_T \sim 1, have two families of bar orbits with different values of angular momentum and energy, which determine a large diffusion in the corotation region. I…
We use 3.6 $μ$m imaging from the S$^{4}$G survey to characterize the typical stellar density profiles ($Σ_{\ast}$) and bars as a function of fundamental galaxy parameters (e.g. the total stellar mass $M_{\ast}$), providing observational constraints for galaxy simulation models to be compared with. We rescale galaxy images to a common frame determined by the size in physical units, by their disk scalelength, or by their bar size and orientation. We stack the resized images to obtain statistically representative average stellar disks and bars. For a given $M_{\ast}$ bin ($\ge 10^{9}M_{\odot}$), …
Double-barred galaxies account for almost one third of all barred galaxies, suggesting that secondary stellar bars, which are embedded in large-scale primary bars, are long-lived structures. However, up to now it has been hard to self-consistently simulate a disc galaxy that sustains two nested stellar bars for longer than a few rotation periods. N-body/hydrodynamical simulations including star formation recipes have been performed. Their properties have been compared with the most recent observational data in order to prove that they are representative of double-barred galaxies, even SB0. Ove…
The dynamics of a barred galaxy depends on the angular velocity or pattern speed of its bar. Indeed, it is related to the location of corotation where gravitational and centrifugal forces cancel out in the rest frame of the bar. The only direct method for measuring the bar pattern speed is the Tremaine-Weinberg technique. This method is best suited to the analysis of the distribution and kinematics of the stellar component in absence of significant star formation and patchy dust obscuration. Therefore, it has been mostly used for early-type barred galaxies. The main sources of uncertainties on…
The Galactic disk exhibits complex chemical and dynamical substructure thought to be induced by the bar, spiral arms, and satellites. Here, we explore the chemical signatures of bar resonances in action and velocity space and characterize the differences between the signatures of corotation and higher-order resonances using test particle simulations. Thanks to recent surveys, we now have large datasets containing metallicities and kinematics of stars outside the solar neighborhood. We compare the simulations to the observational data from Gaia EDR3 and LAMOST DR5 and find weak evidence for a s…
We have developed a method for finding dynamical resonances in disk galaxies using the change in sense of the radial component of the in-plane velocity at a resonance radius. Using simulations we show that we would expect to find these changes at corotation radii, with a weaker effect at the ILR and a small effect at the OLR. The method works well with observations at high spectral and angular resolutions, and is suited to the analysis of 2D velocity fields in Ha from Fabry-Perot spectroscopy, (though it is also applicable to fields in 21cm emission from HI, or to CO emission lines). The obser…
The correlation between the breaks in the metallicity distribution and the corotation radius of spiral galaxies has been already advocated in the past and is predicted by a chemo-dynamical model of our Galaxy that effectively introduces the role of spiral arms in the star formation rate. In this work we present photometric and spectroscopic observations made with the Gemini Telescope for three of the best candidates of spiral galaxies to have the corotation inside the optical disk: IC0167, NGC1042 and NGC6907. We observed the most intense and well distributed \hii regions of these galaxies, de…
This article discusses the effects of the spiral-arm corotation on the stellar dynamics in the Solar Neighborhood (SN). All our results presented here rely on: 1) observational evidence that the Sun lies near the corotation circle, where stars rotate with the same angular velocity as the spiral-arm pattern; the corotation circle establishes domains of the corotation resonance (CR) in the Galactic disk; 2) dynamical constraints that put the spiral-arm potential as the dominant perturbation in the SN, comparing with the effects of the central bar in the SN; 3) a long-lived nature of the spiral s…
We use 3.6 $μ$m photometry from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^{4}$G) to trace the stellar distribution in nearby disk galaxies ($z\approx0$) with total stellar masses $10^{8.5}\lesssim M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}\lesssim10^{11}$ and mid-IR Hubble types $-3 \le T \le 10$, and to provide observational constraints for galaxy formation models to be checked against. For 1154 galaxies with disk inclinations lower than $65^{\circ}$, we Fourier decompose and rescale their images to a common frame determined (i) by the size in physical units, (ii) by their disk scalelength, and for 748…
The MaNGA project has obtained IFU data for several thousand nearby galaxies, including barred galaxies. With the two dimensional spectral and kinematic information provided by IFUs, we can measure the pattern speed of a barred galaxy, which determines the bar dynamics. We apply the non-parametric method proposed by Tremaine \& Weinberg to estimate the bar pattern speed for 53 barred galaxies, making this the largest sample studied so far in this way. Our sample is selected from the MaNGA first public data release as part of SDSS Data Release 13 according mainly to the axis ratio and position …
More than 10% of the barred galaxies with a direct measurement of the bar pattern speed host an ultrafast bar. These bars extend beyond the corotation radius and challenge our understanding of the orbital structure of barred galaxies. Most of them are found in spiral galaxies, rather than in lenticular ones. We analysed the properties of the ultrafast bars detected in the CALIFA Survey to investigate whether they are an artefact resulting from an overestimation of the bar radius and/or an underestimation of the corotation radius or a new class of bars, whose orbital structure has not yet been …
Near the corotation resonance of a transient spiral arm, stellar orbital angular momenta may be changed without inducing significant kinematic heating, resulting in what has come to be known as radial migration. When radial migration is very efficient, a large fraction of disk stars experiences significant, permanent changes to their individual orbital angular momenta over the lifetime of the disk, having strong implications for the evolution of disk galaxies. The first step for a star in a spiral disk to migrate radially is to be captured in a "trapped" orbit, associated with the corotation r…
We report Very Large Array B-configuration observations of the atomic hydrogen 21 cm line emission from the barred disk galaxy NGC 5597 at an angular resolution of 7.1" x 4.2". Using the resonance method, and assuming the ratio of the corotation radius to the semi-major axis of the stellar bar is unity ($\mathcal{R} \equiv R_{\rm CR}/a_{\rm bar} = 1$), we estimate the angular pattern speed of the stellar bar to be, $Ω_{\rm bar} \sim 15.3$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$. This constant value for $Ω_{\rm bar}$ crosses $Ω_{\rm gas} + κ(R)/4$ at a distance $\sim 6.73$ kpc which would correspond to the spat…
The $^{12}$CO $(J=1\rightarrow0)$ velocity fields of a sample of 20 nearby spiral galaxies, selected from the CO Multi-line Imaging of Nearby Galaxies (COMING) legacy project of Nobeyama Radio Observatory, have been analyzed by Fourier decomposition to determine their basic kinematic properties, such as circular and noncircular velocities. On average, the investigated barred (SAB and SB) galaxies exhibit a ratio of noncircular to circular velocities of molecular gas larger by a factor of 1.5-2 than non-barred (SA) spiral galaxies at radii within the bar semimajor axis $a_\mathrm{b}$ at 1 kpc r…
In this series of papers, we propose a theory to explain the formation and properties of rings and spirals in barred galaxies. The building blocks of these structures are orbits guided by the manifolds emanating from the unstable Lagrangian points located near the ends of the bar. In this paper we focus on a comparison of the morphology of observed and of theoretical spirals and rings and we also give some predictions for further comparisons. Our theory can account for spirals as well as both inner and outer rings. The model outer rings have the observed $R_1$, $R_1'$, $R_2$, $R_2'$ and $R_1R_…
We have used Spitzer images of a sample of 68 barred spiral galaxies in the local universe to make systematic measurements of bar length and bar strength. We combine these with precise determinations of the corotation radii associated with the bars, taken from our previous study which used the phase change from radial inflow to radial outflow of gas at corotation, based on high resolution two-dimensional velocity fields in Hα taken with a Fabry-Pérot spectrometer. After presenting the histograms of the derived bar parameters, we study their dependence on the galaxy morphological type and on th…
The pattern speeds of spiral galaxies are closely related to the flow of material in their disks. Flows that follow the `precessing ellipses' paradigm (see e.g., Kalnajs 1973) are likely associated with slowly rotating spirals, which have corotation beyond their end. Such a flow can be secured by material trapped around stable, elliptical, x_1 periodic orbits precessing as their Jacobi constant varies. Contrarily, if part of the spiral arms is located at a corotation region then the spiral structure has to `survive' in chaotic regions. Barred-spiral systems with a single pattern speed and a ba…
We study the orbital structure in a series of self-consistent $N$-body configurations simulating rotating barred galaxies with spiral and ring structures. We perform frequency analysis in order to measure the angular and the radial frequencies of the orbits at two different time snapshots during the evolution of each $N$-body system. The analysis is done separately for the regular and the chaotic orbits. We thereby identify the various types of orbits, determine the shape and percentages of the orbits supporting the bar and the ring/spiral structures, and study how the latter quantities change…
Star formation induced by a spiral shock wave, which in turn is generated by a spiral density wave, produces an azimuthal age gradient across the spiral arm, which has opposite signs on either side of the corotational resonance. An analysis of the spatial separation between young star clusters and nearby HII regions made it possible to determine the position of the corotation radius in the studied galaxies. Fourier analysis of the gas velocity field in the same galaxies independently confirmed the corotation radius estimates obtained by the morphological method presented here.
We model and analyse the secular evolution of stellar bars in spinning dark matter (DM) haloes with the cosmological spin lambda ~ 0 -- 0.09. Using high-resolution stellar and DM numerical simulations, we focus on angular momentum exchange between stellar discs and DM haloes of various axisymmetric shapes --- spherical, oblate and prolate. We find that stellar bars experience a diverse evolution which is guided by the ability of parent haloes to absorb angular momentum lost by the disc through the action of gravitational torques, resonant and non-resonant. We confirm the previous claim that dy…
In this paper, we present BVRI imaging data of NGC 613. We use these data to determine the corotation radius of the bar, using the photometric phase crossing method. This method uses the phase angle of the spiral structure in several wavebands, and looks for a crossing between the blue (B) light and the redder wavebands (e.g., R or I). For NGC 613, we find two phase crossings, an outer phase crossing at 136 +/- 8 arcsec and an inner phase crossing at 16 +/- 8 arcsec. We argue that the outer phase crossing is due to the bar corotation radius, and from the bar length of $R_{\rm bar}=90.0\pm4.0$ …
While it has long been known that a large number of short-lived transient spirals can cause stellar migration, here we report that another mechanism is also effective at mixing disks of barred galaxies. The resonance overlap of the bar and spiral structure induces a nonlinear response leading to a strong redistribution of angular momentum in the disk. We find that, depending on the amplitudes of the perturbers, the changes in angular momentum, dL, could occur up to an order of magnitude faster than in the case of recurrent spirals. The signature of this mechanism is a bimodality in dL with max…
We present the results of the wide-field $^{12}$CO (1--0) observations of the nearby barred galaxy M83 carried out with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA). The interferometric data are combined with the data obtained with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope to recover the total-flux. The target fields of the observations cover the molecular bar and part of the spiral arms, with a spatial resolution of ~110 pc x 260 pc. By exploiting the resolution and sensitivity to extended CO emission, the impact of the galactic structures on the molecular gas content is investigated in terms of the gas kinematics …
`Conspiracy' between the dark and the baryonic mater prohibits an unambiguous decomposition of disc galaxy rotation curves into the corresponding components. Several methods have been proposed to counter this difficulty, but their results are widely discrepant. In this paper, I revisit one of these methods, which relies on the relation between the halo density and the decrease of the bar pattern speed. The latter is routinely characterised by the ratio ${\cal R}$ of the corotation radius $R_{CR}$ to the bar length $L_b$, ${\cal R}=R_{CR}/L_b$. I use a set of $N$-body+SPH simulations, including…
The aim of this work is to contribute to the understanding of the stellar velocity distribution in the solar neighborhood (SN). We propose that the structures on the $U-V$ planes, known as the moving groups, can be mainly explained by the spiral arms perturbations. The applied model of the Galactic disk and spiral arms, with the parameters defined by observational data and with pattern speed $Ω_p=$28.0 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, is the same that allowed us to explain the origin of the Local Arm and the Sun's orbit trapped inside the corotation resonance (CR). We show that the $U-V$ picture of the…
The Hercules stream is a group of co-moving stars in the Solar neighbourhood, which can potentially be explained as a signature of either the outer Lindblad resonance (OLR) of a fast Galactic bar or the corotation resonance of a slower bar. In either case, the feature should be present over a large area of the disc. With the recent commissioning of the APOGEE-2 Southern spectrograph we can search for the Hercules stream at $(l,b)=(270^\circ,0)$, a direction in which the Hercules stream, if caused by the bar's OLR, would be strong enough to be detected using only the line-of-sight velocities. W…
Dust lanes, nuclear rings, and nuclear spirals are typical gas structures in the inner region of barred galaxies. Their shapes and properties are linked to the physical parameters of the host galaxy. We use high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations to study 2D gas flows in simple barred galaxy models. The nuclear rings formed in our simulations can be divided into two groups: one group is nearly round and the other is highly elongated. We find that roundish rings may not form when the bar pattern speed is too high or the bulge central density is too low. We also study the periodic orbits in o…
Owing to the pioneering work of Contopoulos, a strongly barred galaxy is known to have irregular orbits in the vicinity of the bar. By definition, irregular orbits can not be represented by action-angle tori everywhere in phase space. This thwarts perturbation theory and complicates our understanding of their role in galaxy structure and evolution. This paper provides a qualitative introduction to a new method based on KAM theory for investigating the morphology of regular and irregular orbits based on direct computation of tori described in Paper 1 and applies it to a galaxy disc bar. Using t…
The most important theory of the spiral arms of galaxies is the density wave theory based on the Lin-Shu dispersion relation. However, the density waves move with the group velocity towards the inner Lindblad resonance and tend to disappear. Various mechanisms to replenish the spiral waves have been proposed. Nonlinear effects play an important role near the inner and outer Lindblad resonances and corotation. The orbits supporting the spiral arms are precessing ellipses in normal galaxies that extend up to the 4/1 resonance. On the other hand, in barred galaxies the spiral arms extend along th…
We present the first galactic-scale model of the gas dynamics of the prototype barred Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC1097. We use large scale FaNTOmM Fabry-Perot interferometric data covering the entire galactic disc and combine the distribution and kinematics maps with high resolution two-dimensional spectroscopy from the Gemini telescope. We build a dynamical model for the gravitational potential by applying the analytic solution to the equations of motion, within the epicyclic approximation. Our model reproduces all the significant kinematic and structural signatures of this galaxy. We find that the p…
Although more than two-thirds of star-forming disk galaxies in the local universe are barred, some galaxies remain un-barred, occupying the upper half of the Hubble tuning fork diagram. Numerical simulations almost always produce bars spontaneously, so it remains a challenge to understand how galaxies sometimes prevent bars from forming. Using a set of collisionless simulations, we first reproduce the common result that cold stellar disks surrounding a classical bulge become strongly unstable to non-axisymmetric perturbations, leading to the rapid formation of spiral structure and bars. Howeve…
In this article we introduce a technique for finding resonance radii in a disk galaxy. We use a two-dimensional velocity field in Hα emission obtained with Fabry-Perot interferometry, derive the classical rotation curve, and subtract it off, leaving a residual velocity map. As the streaming motions should reverse sign at corotation, we detect these reversals, and plot them in a histogram against galactocentric radius, excluding points where the amplitude of the reversal is smaller than the measurement uncertainty. The histograms show well-defined peaks which we assume to occur at resonance rad…
We explore the chemodynamical properties of a sample of barred galaxies in the Auriga magneto-hydrodynamical cosmological zoom-in simulations, which form boxy/peanut (b/p) bulges, and compare these to the Milky Way (MW). We show that the Auriga galaxies which best reproduce the chemodynamical properties of stellar populations in the MW bulge have quiescent merger histories since redshift $z\sim3.5$: their last major merger occurs at $t_{\rm lookback}>12\,\rm Gyrs$, while subsequent mergers have a stellar mass ratio of $\leq$1:20, suggesting an upper limit of a few percent for the mass ratio of…
Barred galaxies are known to possess magnetic fields that may affect the properties of bar substructures such as dust lanes and nuclear rings. We use two-dimensional high-resolution magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to investigate the effects of magnetic fields on the formation and evolution of such substructures as well as on the mass inflow rates to the galaxy center. The gaseous medium is assumed to be infinitesimally-thin, isothermal, non-self-gravitating, and threaded by initially uniform, azimuthal magnetic fields. We find that there exists an outermost x1-orbit relative to which gas…
When bars form within galaxy formation simulations in the standard cosmological context, dynamical friction with dark matter (DM) causes them to rotate rather slowly. However, almost all observed galactic bars are fast in terms of the ratio between corotation radius and bar length. Here, we explicitly display an $8σ$ tension between the observed distribution of this ratio and that in the EAGLE simulation at redshift 0. We also compare the evolution of Newtonian galactic discs embedded in DM haloes to their evolution in three extended gravity theories: Milgromian Dynamics (MOND), a model of non…
