Nonlinear evolutions of an ultra-intense, short laser pulse due to the wake excitation inside the plasma are studied by means of detailed Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations and comprehensive analyses. Pulse lengths both longer and shorter than the plasma wavelength are considered. It is turned out that the system shows adiabatic behavior as long as the plasma evolves very slowly in the Pulse Co-Moving (PCM) frame due to the ignorable radiation back-reactions. A sophisticated treatment of the adiabatic regime is presented, based on the proper application of the local conservation laws in the PCM frame in conjunction with the Lorentz transformations. In this context, equations for the overall pulse evolutions are reduced into a single equation in terms of the global pulse group-velocity. Due to the proven equality between the local phase velocities of the plasma wave and the radiation, anomalies are observed in this regime, in the global group velocity and the plasma dispersion. The group velocity shows non-explicit density dependency and of remaining above the linear value over a long period of the propagation. These results are successfully examined against PIC simulations and their consistency with the other system evolutions and the physical intuition is fully discussed. Afterward, the interaction locality is examined in terms of the plasma dispersion and the resultant spectral evolutions. And it is found that for pulse lengths larger than the plasma wavelength, the plasma-wave evolutions inside the pulse region result in the strong light phase-modulation along with the amplitude-modulation and whereby violation of the adiabatic description. The development of these phenomena is by production of the effective radiation back-reactions.
Interaction of an intense electron beam with a finite-length, inhomogeneous plasma is investigated numerically. The plasma density profile is maximal in the middle and decays towards the plasma edges. Two regimes of the two-stream instability are observed. In one regime, the frequency of the instability is the plasma frequency at the density maximum and plasma waves are excited in the middle of the plasma. In the other regime, the frequency of the instability matches the local plasma frequency near the edges of the plasma and the intense plasma oscillations occur near plasma boundaries. The la…
A kinetic equation describing the nonlinear evolution of intense electromagnetic pulses in electron-positron (e-p) plasmas is presented. The modulational instability is analyzed for a relativistically intense partially coherent pulse, and it is found that the modulational instability is inhibited by the spectral pulse broadening. A numerical study for the one-dimensional kinetic photon equation is presented. Computer simulations reveal a Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-like recurrence phenomena for localized broadband pulses. The results should be of importance in understanding the nonlinear propagation of b…
Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results of sustained acceleration of electron-positron (e+e-) plasmas by comoving electromagnetic (EM) pulses are presented. When a thin slab of overdense e+e- plasma is irradiated with linear-polarized ultra-intense short laser pulses from both sides, the pulses are transmitted when the plasma is compressed to thinner than ~ 2 relativistic skin depths. A fraction of the plasma is then captured and efficiently accelerated by self-induced JxB forces. For 1 micron laser and 1021Wcm-2 intensity, the maximum energy exceeds GeV in a picosecond.
This paper studies the propagation of intense laser in plasmas in weak relativistic region($0.1<a_0^2<0.5$) using the quasi-periodic approximation. Effective Lorentz factor and density wave effects are calculated in detail. The relativistic correction on stimulated Brillouin instability is investigated in the rest parts. The coupled dispersion relations of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering(SBS) are obtained and investigated numerically.
Plasma high harmonics generation from an extremely intense short-pulse laser is explored by including the effects of ion motion, electron-ion collisions and radiation reaction force in the plasma dynamics. The laser radiation pressure induces plasma ion motion through the hole-boring effect resulting into the frequency shifting and widening of the harmonic spectra. Classical radiation reaction force slightly mitigates the frequency broadening caused by the ion motion. Based on the results and physical considerations, parameter maps highlighting optimum regions for generating a single intense a…
A method to generate an intense isolated few-cycle attosecond XUV pulse is demonstrated using particle-in-cell simulations. When a tailored laser pulse with a sharp edge irradiates a foil target, a strong transverse net current can be excited, which emits a few-cycle XUV pulse from the target rear side. The isolated pulse is ultrashort in the time domain with a duration of several hundred attoseconds. It also has a narrow bandwidth in the spectral domain compared to other XUV sources of high-order harmonics. It has most energy confined around the plasma frequency and no low-harmonic orders bel…
A robust plasma gating to generate a single ultra-intense attosecond pulse is developed. It is a manifestation of the hole-boring effect that limits the strongest attosecond pulse emission within one laser cycle. The generated pulse is characterized by a stabilized harmonic phase $ψ\approx \pmπ/2$ and a slowly decaying exponential spectrum bounded by $γ$-spike scaling and CSE scaling. The phase oscillations in low-frequency region and fluctuations in high-frequency region are discussed. We also show that the phase fluctuations in high-frequency region can be reduced by including radiation reac…
The propagation of intense laser pulses and the generation of high energy electrons from the underdense plasmas are investigated using two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. When the ratio of the laser power and a critical power of relativistic self-focusing is the optimal value, it propagates stably and electrons have maximum energies.
Plasma sheath is the non-neutral space charge region that isolates bulk plasma from boundary. Radio-frequency (RF) sheathes are formed when applying RF voltage to electrodes. Generally, applied bias is mainly consumed by RF sheath which shields external field. Here we report first evidence that intense boundary emission destroys normal RF sheath and establishes a novel type of RF plasma where external bias is consumed by bulk plasma instead of sheath. Ions are naturally confined while plasma electrons are unobstructed, generating strong RF current in entire plasma, combined with unique particl…
Producing a dense background plasma for neutralization purposes is experimentally difficult and requires a large amount of energy. We show that even an underdense background plasma with a small relative density can achieve high neutralization of intense ion beam pulses. Using particle-in-cell simulations, we show that if the total plasma electron charge is not comparable to the beam charge, electron emitters are necessary for effective neutralization, but are not needed if the plasma volume is large. Several plasma densities are investigated, including the case of electron emitters without pla…
It is shown that when relativistically intense ultrashort laser pulses are reflected from the boundary of a plasma with a near-critical density, Doppler frequency shift leads to generation of intense radiation both in the high-frequency, up to the X-ray, range, and in the low-frequency, mid-infrared, range. The efficiency of energy conversion into the wavelength range of greater than 3 $μ$m can reach several percent, which makes it possible to obtain relativistically intense pulses in the mid-infrared range. These pulses are synchronized with high harmonics in the ultraviolet and X-ray ranges,…
We use PIC modeling to identify the acceleration mechanism responsible for the observed generation of super-hot electrons in ultra-intense laser-plasma interactions with solid targets with pre-formed plasma. We identify several features of direct laser acceleration (DLA) that drive the generation of super-hot electrons. We find that, in this regime, electrons that become super-hot are primarily injected by a looping mechanism that we call loop-injected direct acceleration (LIDA).
The dynamics of the ultra-intense circularly polarized solitons under inhomogeneous plasmas are examined. The interaction is modeled by the Maxwell and relativistic hydrodynamic equations and is solved with fully implicit energy-conserving numerical scheme. It is shown that a propagating weak soliton can be decreased and reflected by increasing plasma background, which is consistent with the existing studies based on hypothesis of weak density response. However it is found that ultra-intense soliton is well trapped and kept still when encountering increasing background. Probably, this founding…
Non-linear cascade scattering of intense, tightly focused laser pulses by relativistic electrons is studied numerically in the classical approximation including the radiation damping for the quantum parameter hwx-ray/E<1 and an arbitrary radiation parameter Kai. The electron energy loss, along with its side scattering by the ponderomotive force, makes the scattering in the vicinity of high laser field nearly impossible at high electron energies. The use of a second, co-propagating laser pulse as a booster is shown to solve this problem.
Stimulated Raman scattering of an ultra-intense laser pulse in plasmas is studied by perturbatively including the leading order term of the Landau-Lifshitz radiation reaction force in the equation of motion for plasma electrons. In this approximation, radiation reaction force causes phase shift in nonlinear current densities that drive the two Raman sidebands (anti-Stokes and Stokes waves), manifesting itself into the nonlinear mixing of two sidebands. This mixing results in a strong enhancement in the growth of the forward Raman scattering instability.
The classical nonlinear laser-plasma interaction theory is corrected. Given the effects of vacuum polarization (induced by extreme laser) as nonlinear media response, one-dimensional wave equations of a monochromatic laser field are derived from the Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangian density and a derivative correction with the first order quantum electrodynamic (QED) effects. A more suitable model to formulate the interactions of extreme laser and high-energy-density plasma is developed. In the results, the enhanced effect of vacuum polarization will be discussed and shown.
We present a novel scheme to obtain robust, narrowband, and tunable THz emission by using a nano-dimensional overdense plasma target that is irradiated by two counter-propagating detuned laser pulses. So far, no narrowband THz sources with a field strength of GV/m-level have been reported from laser-solid interaction. We report intense THz pulses at beat-frequency ($\simeq$30THz) generated due to strong plasma current produced by the beat ponderomotive force in the colliding region, with an unprecedentedly high peak field strength of 11.9GV/m and spectral width $(Δf/f$$\simeq$$5.3\%)$ from 2D …
In this paper, the effect of finite electron temperature on the space-time evolution and breaking of a large amplitude relativistically intense electron plasma wave has been studied, using a 1-D relativistic Particle-in-Cell (PIC) code. We have found that for phase velocities for which $γ_ϕ\ll 1 + \frac{k_BT_e}{mc^2}$, the wave damps within a few plasma period and essentially follows the relativistic Landau Damping rate predicted by Buti. In the opposite regime (i.e. for $γ_ϕ\gg 1 + \frac{k_BT_e}{mc^2}$) we have observed that waves propagate through the system for a long period of time and in …
Utilizing laser plasma wakefield to accelerate ultra-high charge electron beam is critical for many pioneering applications, for example to efficiently produce nuclear isomers with short lifetimes which may be widely used. However, because of the beam loading effect, electron charge in a single plasma bubble is limited in level of hundreds picocoulomb. Here, we experimentally present that a hundred kilo-ampere, twenty nanocoulomb, tens of MeV collimated electron beam is produced from a chain of wakefield acceleration, via a tightly focused intense laser pulse transversely matched in dense plas…
Oblique incidence of a $p$-polarized laser beam on a fully ionized plasma with a low density plasma corona is investigated numerically by Particle-In-Cell and Vlasov simulations in two dimensions. A single narrow self-focused current jet of energetic electrons is observed to be projected into the corona nearly normal to the target. Magnetic fields enhance the penetration depth of the electrons into the corona. A scaling law for the angle of the ejected electrons with incident laser intensity is given.
The spatio-temporal evolution and breaking of relativistically intense wave packets in a cold homogeneous unmagnetized plasma has been studied analytically and numerically. A general expression for phase mixing time scale as a function of amplitude of the wave packet and width of the spectrum has been derived. Results have been compared with the existing formulae in literature. It is shown that phase mixing time scale crucially depends on the relative magnitude of the amplitude and dimensionless spectral width of the wave packet. Finally we have verified our results with respect to both the am…
Two decades after the invention of chirped pulse amplification the physical mechanism of collisionless absorption of intense laser radiation in overdense matter is still not sufficiently well understood. We show that anharmonic resonance in the self-generated plasma potential of the single plasma layers (cold plasma model) or of the individual electrons (warm plasma), respectively, constitutes the leading physical mechanism of collisionless absorption in an overdense plasma. Analogously to collisions, resonance provides for the finite phase shift of the free electron current relative to the dr…
Intense and energetic electron currents can be generated by ultra-intense lasers interacting with solid density targets. Especially for ultra-short laser pulses their temporal evolution needs to be taken into account for many non-linear processes as instantaneous currents may differ significantly from the average. Hence, a dynamic model including the temporal variation of the electron currents which goes beyond a simple bunching with twice the laser frequency but otherwise constant current is needed. Here we present a new time-dependent model to describe the laser generated currents and obtain…
Spatio-temporal evolution and breaking of relativistically intense cylindrical and spherical space charge oscillations in a homogeneous cold plasma is studied analytically and numerically using Dawson Sheet Model [J.M. Dawson, Phys. Rev.113, 383(1959)]. It is found that cylindrical and spherical space charge oscillations break via the process of phase mixing at an arbitrarily small amplitude due to anharmonicity introduced by geometry and relativistic mass variation effects. A general expression for phase mixing time (wave breaking time) has been derived and it is shown that for both cases, it…
Backward terahertz radiation can be produced by a high-intensity laser normally incident upon an underdense plasma. It is found that terahertz radiation is generated by electrons refluxing along the bubble shell. These shell electrons have similar dynamic trajectories and emit backward radiations to vacuum. This scheme has been proved through electron dynamic calculations as well as by using an ionic sphere model. In addition, the bubble shape is found to influence the radiation frequency, and this scheme can be implemented in both uniform and up-ramp density gradient plasma targets. The terah…
In simulations of a 10PW laser striking a solid we demonstrate the possibility of producing a pure electron-positron plasma by the same processes as those thought to operate in high-energy astrophysical environments. A maximum positron density of 10^26/m^3 is achieved, seven orders of magnitude greater than achieved in previous experiments. Additionally, 35% of the laser energy is converted to a burst of gamma-rays of intensity 10^22W/cm^2, potentially the most intense gamma-ray source available in the laboratory. This absorption results in a strong feedback between both pair and gamma-ray pro…
We present a generalization of Vlasov-Maxwell kinetic theory that accounts for intense electromagnetic fields. A strongly-radiating, possibly optically-thick plasma is decomposed into fragments, each comprising a charged particle together with its self-generated electromagnetic field. Assuming weak inter-fragment correlations, but strong intra-fragment correlations, a mean-field evolution equation for the single-fragment distribution functional is derived. We also identify the equation's Hamiltonian formulation. By incorporating strong correlations between a charged particle and the field it g…
We report here an exact analytical travelling wave solution for nonlinear electron plasma wave excited by an intense ultra-relativistic proton beam. It brings out the underlying physics of longitudinal electric field characteristics of the excited wake wave formed behind the drive beam. The results are further supplemented by a fully relativistic particle in cell (PIC) code OSIRIS in 2D geometry. The plasma and beam parameters in the simulation are chosen in conformity with experimental work and it provides us the anticipated axial and transverse electric field profiles. The investigation is f…
It is observed that the interaction of an intense ultra-short laser pulse with an overdense gas jet results in the pulse collapse and the deposition of a significant part of energy in a small and well localized volume in the rising part of the gas jet, where the electrons are efficiently accelerated and heated. A collisionless plasma expansion over 150 microns at a sub-relativistic velocity (~c/3) has been optically monitored in time and space, and attributed to the quasistatic field ionization of the gas associated to the hot electron current. Numerical simulations in good agreement with the …
The inelastic interaction between heavy ions and an electron plasma in the presence of an intense radiation field (RF) is investigated. The stopping power of the test ion averaged with a period of the RF has been calculated assuming that $ω_{0} >ω_{p}$, where $ω_{0}$ is the frequency of the RF and $ω_{p}$ is the plasma frequency. In order to highlight the effect of the radiation field we present a comparison of our analytical and numerical results obtained for nonzero RF with those for vanishing RF. It has been shown that the RF may strongly reduce the mean energy loss for slow ions while incr…
When high-intensity laser interaction with matter enters the regime of dominated radiation reaction, the radiation losses open the way for producing short pulse high power gamma ray flashes. The gamma-ray pulse duration and divergence are determined by the laser pulse amplitude and by the plasma target density scale length. On the basis of theoretical analysis and particle-in-cell simulations with the radiation friction force incorporated, optimal conditions for generating a gamma-ray flash with a tailored overcritical density target are found.
Strong electromagnetic pulses (EMP) are generated from intense laser interactions with solid-density targets, and can be guided by the target geometry, specifically through conductive connections to the ground. We present an experimental characterization, by time- and spatial-resolved proton deflectometry, of guided electromagnetic discharge pulses along wires including a coil, driven by 0.5 ps, 50 J, 1e19 W/cm2 laser pulses. Proton-deflectometry data allows to time-resolve first the EMP due to the laser-driven target charging and then the return EMP from the ground through the conductive targ…
We demonstrate an intense broadband terahertz (THz) source based on the interaction of relativistic-intensity femtosecond lasers with aligned copper nanorod array targets. For copper nanorod targets with length 5 μm, a maximum 13.8 times enhancement in the THz pulse energy (in $\leq$ 20 THz spectral range) is measured as compared to that with a thick plane copper target under the same laser conditions. A further increase in the nanorod length leads to a decrease in the THz pulse energy at medium frequencies ($\leq$ 20THz) and increase of the electromagnetic pulse energy in the high-frequency r…
A pump-probe polarimetric technique is demonstrated, which provides a complete, temporally and spatially-resolved mapping of the megagauss magnetic fields generated in intense short-pulse laser-plasma interactions. A normally-incident time-delayed probe pulse reflected from its critical surface undergoes a change in its ellipticity according to the magneto-optic Cotton-Mouton effect due to the azimuthal nature of the ambient self-generated megagauss magnetic fields. The temporal resolution of the magnetic field mapping is of the order of the pulsewidth, whereas a spatial resolution of a few mi…
Sources of intense, ultra-short electromagnetic pulses enable applications such as attosecond pulse generation, control of electron motion in solids and the observation of reaction dynamics at the electronic level. For such applications both high-intensity and carrier envelope phase~(CEP) tunability are beneficial, yet hard to obtain with current methods. In this work we present a new scheme for generation of isolated CEP-tunable intense sub-cycle pulses with central frequencies that range from the midinfrared to the ultraviolet. It utilizes an intense laser pulse which drives a wake in a plas…
We study the initial properties and positron annihilation within a small electron-positron plasma drop formed by intense laser pulse. Such QED cascade initiated plasma is, in general, far below the chemical (particle yield) equilibrium. We find that the available electrons and positrons equilibrate kinetically, yet despite relatively high particle density, the electron-positron annihilation is very slow, suggesting a rather long lifespan of the plasma drop.
Ionization is a fundamental process in intense laser-matter interactions, and is known to cause plasma defocusing and intensity clamping. Here, we investigate theoretically the propagation dynamics of an intense laser pulse in a helium gas jet in the ionization saturation regime, and we find that the pulse undergoes self-focusing and self-compression through ionization-induced reshaping, resulting in a manyfold increase in the laser intensity. This unconventional behavior is associated with the spatiotemporal frequency variation mediated by ionization and spatiotempral coupling. Our results il…
We report the first femtosecond resolved evolution of the giant magnetic field in a solid plasma, produced by a 100 fs, 10^16 W cm^-2, 806 nm laser field, using a pump-probe Faraday rotation technique.
The interaction of intense femtosecond laser pulses with atomic Argon clusters has been investigated by using nano-plasma model. Based on the dynamic simulations, ionization process, heating and expansion of a cluster after irradiation by femtosecond laser pulses at intensities up to 2*1017 Wcm-2 are studied. The analytical calculation provides ionization ratefor different mechanisms and time evolution of the density of electrons for different pulse shapes. In this approach the strong dependence of laser intensity, pulse duration and laser shape on the electron energy, the electron density and…
Generation of terahertz radiation by an oscillating discharge, excited with short laser pulses, may be controlled by geometry of the irradiated target. In this work, an annular target with a thin slit is considered as an efficient emitter of secondary radiation when driven by a short intense laser pulse. Under the irradiation, a slit works as a diode, which is quickly filled by dense plasma, closing the circuit for a travelling discharge pulse. Such a diode defines the discharge pulse propagation direction in a closed contour, enabling its multiple passes along the coil. The obtained oscillatin…
In this work using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and analytical considerations we demonstrate intense high-order plasma surface harmonics carrying a time-varying orbital angular momentum (OAM) -- the self-torque. We show that by using two laser beams with different OAMs $l_1$ and $l_2$ and a certain delay between each other and shooting them obliquely on an overdense plasma target, one can generate harmonics with OAM spanning $nl_1$ to $nl_2$, where $n$ is the order of the harmonic. Such intense self-torqued harmonics can offer new possibilities in ultrafast spectroscopy.
Laser pulses traveling through a plasma can feature group velocities significantly differing from the speed of light in vacuum. This modifies the well-known Volkov states of an electron inside a strong laser-field from the vacuum case and consequently all quantum electrodynamical effects triggered by the electron. Here we present an in-depth study of the basic process of photon emission by an electron scattered from an intense short laser pulse inside a plasma, labeled nonlinear Compton scattering, based on modified Volkov solutions derived from first principles. Consequences of the nonlinear,…
The formation of relativistic electron mirror produced via ionization of thin solid target by ultraintense femtosecond laser pulse is considered with the help of computer simulations. It is shown that the reflection of weak counter-propagating wave from such a mirror can produce the coherent radiation in X-ray and gamma-ray bands. The spectrum of up-conversed radiation is investigated.
We propose a novel measurement technique capable of determining the temporal duration of an intense laser pulse directly in its focus at full intensity. We show that the electromagnetic radiation pattern emitted by an electron bunch with a temporal energy chirp colliding perpendicularly with the laser pulse exhibits a distinct dependence on the pulse's duration. As the electrons emit radiation into an angular region determined by the ratio of their instantaneous energy to the laser's local field strength, the temporal change of the electrons' energy imprints information about the laser's pulse…
We show theoretically that an intense femtosecond optical pulse incident normally on a metal surface tends to decay into a pair of counter-propagating surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs). The interference field heats the medium periodically, which causes a periodic permittivity perturbation and resonantly amplifies the magnitudes of SPPs. The instability growth time is only 10-50 fs for typical metals at damaging laser fluences. This mechanism is promising for the interpretation of laser-induced periodic surface structures formation in a single-pulse pumping regime.
We show a new effect of the bow wave excitation by an intense short laser pulse propagating in underdense plasma. Due to spreading of the laser pulse energy in transverse direction, the bow wave causes a large-scale transverse modulation of the electron density. This can significantly increase the electric potential of the wake wave since the wake wave is generated in the region much wider than the laser pulse waist.
Branched flow is an interesting phenomenon that can occur in diverse systems. It is usually linear in the sense that the flow does not alter the medium properties. Branched flow of light on thin films was recently discovered. A question of interest is thus if nonlinear branched flow of light can also occur. Here we found using particle-in-cell simulations that with intense laser propagating in plasma with randomly uneven density distribution, photoionization by the laser can locally enhance the density variations along the laser paths and thus the branching of the laser. However, too-intense l…
The collision of ultra-relativistic electron beams with intense short laser pulses makes possible to study QED in the high-intensity regime. Present day high-intensity lasers mostly operate with short pulse durations of several tens of femtoseconds, i.e. only a few optical cycles. A profound theoretical understanding of short pulse effects is important not only for studying fundamental aspects of high-intensity laser matter interaction, but also for applications as novel X- and gamma-ray radiation sources. In this article we give a brief overview of the theory of high-intensity QED with focus …
It is generally believed that relativistically underdense plasma is transparent for intense laser radiation. However, particle-in-cell simulations reveal abnormal laser field absorption above the intensity threshold about~$3 \times 10^{24}~\mathrm{W}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ for the wavelength of $1~μ\mathrm{m}$. Above the threshold, the further increase of the laser intensity doesn't lead to the increase of the propagation distance. The simulations take into account emission of hard photons and subsequent pair photoproduction in the laser field. These effects lead to onset of a self-sustained elect…
We consider the theoretical description of intense laser pulses propagating through gases. Starting from a first-principles description of both the electromagnetic field and the electron motion within the gas atoms, we derive a hierarchy of reduced models. We obtain a parallel set of models, where the atomic electrons are treated classically on the one hand, and quantum-mechanically on the other. By working consistently in either a Lagrangian formulation or a Hamiltonian formulation, we ensure that our reduced models preserve the variational structure of the parent models. Taking advantage of …
