In electrostatic simulations of MAST plasma at electron-gyroradius scales, using the local flux-tube gyrokinetic code GS2 with adiabatic ions, we find that the long-time saturated electron heat flux (the level most relevant to energy transport) decreases as the electron collisionality decreases. At early simulation times, the heat flux "quasi-saturates" without any strong dependence on collisionality, and with the turbulence dominated by streamer-like radially elongated structures. However, the zonal fluctuation component continues to grow slowly until much later times, eventually leading to a new saturated state dominated by zonal modes and with the heat flux proportional to the collision rate, in approximate agreement with the experimentally observed collisionality scaling of the energy confinement in MAST. We outline an explanation of this effect based on a model of ETG turbulence dominated by zonal-nonzonal interactions and on an analytically derived scaling of the zonal-mode damping rate with the electron-ion collisionality. Improved energy confinement with decreasing collisionality is favourable towards the performance of future, hotter devices.
The linear instability of the electron temperature gradient (ETG) driven modes in the presence of zonal flows is investigated. Random and deterministic $cos$ - like profiles of the zonal flow are considered. It is shown that the presence of shearing by zonal flows can stabilize the linear instability of ETG drift modes.
The Large Volume Plasma Device (LVPD) has successfully demonstrated excitation of Electron Temperature Gradient (ETG) driven turbulence in finite plasma beta condition , where the threshold condition for ETG turbulence is satisfied. The observed mode follows wave-vector scaling and frequency ordering of ETG turbulence. Simultaneous measurement of fluctuations in electron temperature, $δT_e $, plasma density, $δn_e $ and potential,$δV_f $ are obtained. Strong negative correlation with correlation coefficients $ C_{δn_e δϕ_f}\sim -0.8 $ and $ C_{δT_e δϕ}\sim -0.9 $ are observed between density a…
Previous studies with first-principle-based integrated modelling suggested that ETG turbulence may lead to an anti-GyroBohm isotope scaling in JET high-performance hybrid H-mode scenarios. A dedicated comparison study against higher-fidelity turbulence modelling invalidates this claim. Ion-scale turbulence with magnetic field perturbations included, can match the power balance fluxes within temperature gradient error margins. Multiscale gyrokinetic simulations from two distinct codes produce no significant ETG heat flux, demonstrating that simple rules-of-thumb are insufficient criteria for it…
In this work the first demonstration of a high frequency branch of the geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) driven by electron temperature gradient (ETG) modes is presented. The work is based on a fluid description of the ETG mode retaining non-adiabatic ions and the dispersion relation for high frequency GAMs driven nonlinearly by ETG modes is derived. A new saturation mechanism for ETG turbulence through the interaction with high frequency GAMs is found, resulting in a significantly enhanced ETG turbulence saturation level compared to the mixing length estimate.
We show that zonal flow can be preferentially excited by intermediate-scale toroidal electron temperature gradient (ETG) turbulence in tokamak plasmas. Previous theoretical studies that yielded an opposite conclusion assumed a fluid approximation for ETG modes. Here, we carry out a gyrokinetic analysis which ultimately yields a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the ETG dynamics with a Navier-Stokes type nonlinearity. For typical tokamak parameters, it is found that zonal flow generation plays an important role in the intermediate-scale ETG turbulence. This finding offers an explanation for re…
In this work the finite $β$-effects of an electron branch of the geodesic acoustic mode (el-GAM) driven by electron temperature gradient (ETG) modes is presented. The work is based on a fluid description of the ETG mode retaining non-adiabatic ions and the dispersion relation for el-GAMs driven non-linearly by ETG modes is derived. The ETG growth rate from the fluid model is compared to the results found from gyrokinetic simulations with good agreement. A new saturation mechanism for ETG turbulence through the interaction with el-GAMs is found, resulting in a significantly enhanced ETG turbule…
The derivation of an intermediate-scale gyrokinetic-electron theory in nonuniform tokamak plasmas [Chen H. et al 2021 Nucl. Fusion 61 066017] has shown that a Navier-Stokes type nonlinearity couples electron-temperature-gradient (ETG) modes and zonal flow (ZF) modes with wavelengths much shorter than the ion gyroradius but much longer than the electron gyroradius. This intermediate-scale ETG-ZF coupling is typically stronger than the Hasegawa-Mima type nonlinearity characteristic of the fluid approximation and is predicted to lead to relevant zonal flow generation and ETG mode regulation. Elec…
Radially inward turbulent particle flux is observed in the core region of target plasma of Large Volume Plasma Device(LVPD). The region satisfy conditions for ETG turbulence, i.e. threshold condition, $ η_e = L_{n_e} / L_{T_e} > 2/3 $ , where density scale length, $ L_{n_e} \sim 300 cm $ and temerature scale length, $ L_{T_e} \sim 50cm $[S.K. Mattoo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 108, 255007(2012)\cite{Mattoo_PRL}]. The measured flux is dominantly electrostatic ($Γ_{es} \approx 10^{5} Γ_{em}$) although the nature of the measured turbulence is electromagnetic($β\approx 0.6 $). The turbulence has bee…
The competition between drift wave and interchange physics in general E-cross-B drift turbulence is studied with computations in three dimensional tokamak flux tube geometry. For a given set of background scales, the parameter space can be covered by the plasma beta and drift wave collisionality. At large enough plasma beta the turbulence breaks out into ideal ballooning modes and saturates only by depleting the free energy in the background pressure gradient. At high collisionality it finds a more gradual transition to resistive ballooning. At moderate beta and collisionality it retains drift…
In magnetized plasma turbulence, the couplings of perpendicular spatial scales that arise due to the nonlinear interactions are analyzed from the perspective of the free-energy exchanges. The plasmas considered here, with appropriate ion or electron adiabatic electro-neutrality responses, are described by the gyrokinetic formalism in a toroidal magnetic geometry. Turbulence develops due to the electrostatic fluctuations driven by temperature gradient instabilities, either ion temperature gradient (ITG) or electron temperature gradient (ETG). The analysis consists in decomposing the system into…
Nonlinear multiscale gyrokinetic simulations of a Joint European Torus edge pedestal are used to show that electron-temperature-gradient (ETG) turbulence has a rich three-dimensional structure, varying strongly according to the local magnetic-field configuration. In the plane normal to the magnetic field, the steep pedestal electron temperature gradient gives rise to anisotropic turbulence with a radial (normal) wavelength much shorter than in the binormal direction. In the parallel direction, the location and parallel extent of the turbulence are determined by the variation in the magnetic dr…
The Large Volume Plasma device(LVPD), a cylindrically shaped, linear plasma device of dimension( $ϕ=2m $, $ L =3m $) have successfully demonstrated the excitation of Electron Temperature Gradient(ETG) turbulence[ Mattoo et al.,[1]]. The observed ETG turbulence shows significant power between $ω\sim (25-90 krad/s )> Ω_{ci}(= 8 krad/s )$, corresponding to the wavenumber, $ k_y ρ_e ~ (0.1- 0.2)$ where, $ Ω_{ci}$ and $ρ_e(=5 mm ) $, ion cyclotron frequency and electron Larmor radius, respectively. The observed frequency and wave number matches well with theoretical estimates corresponding to Whist…

The effect of changes in plasma parameters, that are characteristic near or at an L-H transition in fusion edge plasmas, on fluctuation correlation lengths are analysed by means of drift-Alfven turbulence computations. Scalings by density gradient length, collisionality, plasma beta, and by an imposed shear flow are considered. It is found that strongly sheared flows lead to the appearence of long-range correlations in electrostatic potential fluctuations parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field.
Particle transport due to Ion Temperature Gradient/Trapped Electron (ITG/TE) mode turbulence is investigated using the gyrokinetic code GENE. Both a reduced quasilinear (QL) treatment and nonlinear (NL) simulations are performed for typical tokamak parameters corresponding to ITG dominated turbulence. A selfconsistent treatment is used, where the stationary local profiles are calculated corresponding to zero particle flux simultaneously for electrons and trace impurities. The scaling of the stationary profiles with magnetic shear, safety factor, electron-to-ion temperature ratio, collisionalit…
Electromagnetic (EM) instabilities and turbulence driven by the electron-temperature gradient are considered in a local slab model of a tokamak-like plasma. The model describes perturbations at scales both larger and smaller than the flux-freezing scale $d_e$, and so captures both electrostatic and EM regimes of turbulence. The well-known electrostatic instabilities -- slab and curvature-mediated ETG -- are recovered, and a new instability is found in the EM regime, called the Thermo-Alfvénic instability (TAI). It exists in both a slab version (sTAI, destabilising kinetic Alfvén waves) and a c…
The generation of large-scale zonal flows by small-scale electrostatic drift waves in electron temperature gradient(ETG) driven turbulence model is considered. The generation mechanism is based on the modulational instability of a finite amplitude monochromatic drift wave. The threshold and growth rate of the instability as well as the optimal spatial scale of zonal flow are obtained.
Stability properties and mode signature for equilibria of a model of electron temperature gradient (ETG) driven turbulence are investigated by Hamiltonian techniques. After deriving the infinite families of Casimir invariants, associated with the noncanonical Poisson bracket of the model, a sufficient condition for stability is obtained by means of the Energy-Casimir method. Mode signature is then investigated for linear motions about homogeneous equilibria. Depending on the sign of the equilibrium "translated" pressure gradient, stable equilibria can either be energy stable, i.e.\ possess def…
The mean parallel current density evolution equation is presented using electromagnetic (EM) gyrokinetic equation. There exist two types of intrinsic current driving mechanisms resulted from EM electron temperature gradient (ETG) turbulence. The first type is the divergence of residual turbulent flux including a residual stress-like term and a kinetic stress-like term. The second type is named as residual turbulent source, which is driven by the correlation between density and parallel electric field fluctuations. The intrinsic current density driven by the residual turbulent source is negligi…
The saturated state of turbulence driven by the ion-temperature-gradient instability is investigated using a two-dimensional long-wavelength fluid model that describes the perturbed electrostatic potential and perturbed ion temperature in a magnetic field with constant curvature (a $Z$-pinch) and an equilibrium temperature gradient. Numerical simulations reveal a well-defined transition between a finite-amplitude saturated state dominated by strong zonal-flow and zonal-temperature perturbations, and a blow-up state that fails to saturate on a box-independent scale. We argue that this transitio…
The effects higher order harmonics have been self-consistently included in the derivation of the electron branch of the electron Geodesic Acoustic Mode (el-GAM) in an Electron-Temperature-Gradient (ETG) turbulence background. The work is based on a two-fluid model including finite $β$-effects while retaining non-adiabatic ions. In solving the linear dispersion relation, it is found that the due to the coupling to the $m=2$ mode the real frequency may be significantly altered and yield higher values.
Results from a database analysis of H-mode electron density profiles on the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV) in stationary conditions show that the logarithmic electron density gradient increases with collisionality. By contrast, usual observations of H-modes showed that the electron density profiles tend to flatten with increasing collisionality. In this work it is reinforced that the role of collisionality alone, depending on the parameter regime, can be rather weak and in these, dominantly electron heated TCV cases, the electron density gradient is tailored by the underlying turbulenc…

Nonlinear gyrokinetics provides a suitable framework to describe short-wavelength turbulence in magnetized laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. In the electrostatic limit, this system is known to exhibit a free energy cascade towards small scales in (perpendicular) real and/or velocity space. The dissipation of free energy is always due to collisions (no matter how weak the collisionality), but may be spread out across a wide range of scales. Here, we focus on freely-decaying 2D electrostatic turbulence on sub-ion-gyroradius scales. An existing scaling theory for the turbulent cascade in the …

The local intrinsic parallel current density driven by electron drift wave (DW) turbulence including electromagnetic (EM) effects is analytically studied. The scalings of the ratios of intrinsic current density driven by residual turbulent flux and by turbulent source to the bootstrap current density with electron density and temperature are predicted to be $T_e^{3/4}T_i/n_e$ and $T_eT_i/n_e$, respectively. Based on the typical parameters in DIII-D pedestal region, the local intrinsic current density driven by both the residual turbulent flux and the turbulent source is negligible. However, de…
Nonlinear symmetry breaking may occur in systems with two or more states whose linear dynamics displays certain symmetries, one of which is preferred nonlinearly. We have identified a regime of electron temperature gradient (ETG) instabilities in a tokamak plasma with circular concentric flux surfaces that has its largest growth rate at a finite ballooning angle, establishing a symmetry that is nonlinearly broken to favor one sign for the ballooning angle. This is the first example of nonlinear symmetry breaking in simulations of a drift instability in the absence of externally imposed flow sh…
We study the effects of Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) on turbulence, flows and confinement in the framework of resistive drift-wave turbulence. This work was motivated, in parts, by experiments reported at the IAEA 2010 conference [Y. Xu {\it et al}, Nucl. Fusion \textbf{51}, 062030] which showed a decrease of long-range correlations during the application of RMPs. We derive and apply a zero-dimensional predator-prey model coupling the Drift-Wave Zonal Mode system [M. Leconte and P.H. Diamond, Phys. Plasmas \textbf{19}, 055903] to the evolution of mean quantities. This model has both …

The theoretical investigation of relevant turbulent transport mechanisms in H-mode pedestals is a great scientific and numerical challenge. In this study, we address this challenge by global, nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of a full pedestal up to the separatrix, supported by a detailed characterisation of gyrokinetic instabilities from just inside the pedestal top to pedestal centre and foot. We present ASDEX Upgrade pedestal simulations using an upgraded version of the gyrokinetic, Eulerian, delta-f code GENE (genecode.org) that enables stable global simulations at experimental plasma bet…

This paper describes a conceptual framework for understanding kinetic plasma turbulence as a generalized form of energy cascade in phase space. It is emphasized that conversion of turbulent energy into thermodynamic heat is only achievable in the presence of some (however small) degree of collisionality. The smallness of the collision rate is compensated by the emergence of small-scale structure in the velocity space. For gyrokinetic turbulence, a nonlinear perpendicular phase mixing mechanism is identified and described as a turbulent cascade of entropy fluctuations simultaneously occurring a…
The SOL width is a parameter of paramount importance in modern tokamaks as it controls the power density deposited at the divertor plates, critical for plasma-facing material survivability. An understanding of the parameters controlling it has consequently long been sought (Connor et al. 1999 NF 39 2). Prior to Chang et al.(2017 NF 57 11), studies of the tokamak edge have been mostly confined to reduced fluid models and simplified geometries, leaving out important pieces of physics. Here, we analyze the results of a DIII-D simulation performed with the full-f gyrokinetic code XGC1 which includ…
Understanding and predicting divertor heat-load width $λ_q$ is a critically important problem for an easier and more robust operation of ITER with high fusion gain. Previous predictive simulation data for $λ_q$ using the extreme-scale edge gyrokinetic code XGC1 in the electrostatic limit under attached divertor plasma conditions in three major US tokamaks [C.S. Chang et al., Nucl. Fusion 57, 116023 (2017)] reproduced the Eich and Goldston attached-divertor formula results [formula #14 in T. Eich et al., Nucl. Fusion 53, 093031 (2013); R.J. Goldston, Nucl. Fusion 52, 013009 (2012)], and further…
A scaling theory of long-wavelength electrostatic turbulence in a magnetised, weakly collisional plasma (e.g., ITG turbulence) is proposed, with account taken both of the nonlinear advection of the perturbed particle distribution by fluctuating ExB flows and of its phase mixing, which is caused by the streaming of the particles along the mean magnetic field and, in a linear problem, would lead to Landau damping. It is found that it is possible to construct a consistent theory in which very little free energy leaks into high velocity moments of the distribution function, rendering the turbulent…
Neoclassical and turbulent heavy impurity transport in tokamak core plasmas are determined by main ion temperature, density and toroidal rotation profiles. Thus, in order to understand and prevent experimental behaviour of W accumulation, flux-driven integrated modelling of main ion heat and particle transport over multiple confinement times is a vital prerequisite. For the first time, the quasilinear gyrokinetic code QuaLiKiz has been applied for successful predictions of core kinetic profiles in an ASDEX Upgrade H-mode discharge in the turbulence dominated region within the integrated modell…
