We study the interplay between collective and individual optically-induced magnetic responses in quadrumers made of identical dielectric nanoparticles. Unlike their plasmonic counterparts, all-dielectric nanoparticle clusters are shown to exhibit multiple dimensions of resonant magnetic responses that can be employed for the realization of anomalous scattering signatures. We focus our analysis on symmetric quadrumers made from silicon nanoparticles and verify our theoretical results in proof-of-concept radio frequency experiments demonstrating the existence of a novel type of magnetic Fano resonance in nanophotonics.
Fano resonance in plasmonic oligomers originating from the interference of a spectrally broad superradiant mode and a discrete subradiant mode is under intensive recent investigations due to numerous potential applications. In this regard, development of experimental means to understand and control the complex Fano interference process and to modulate the resulting asymmetric Fano spectral line shape is highly sought after. Here we present a polarization Mueller matrix measurement and inverse analysis approach for quantitative understanding and interpretation of the complex interference proces…
Various clusters of metallic or dielectric nanoparticles can exhibit sharp Fano resonances originating from at least two modes interference of different spectral width. However, for practical applications such as biosensing or nonlinear nanophotonics, the fine-tuning of the Fano resonances is generally required. Here, we propose and demonstrate a novel type of hybrid oligomers consisting of asymmetric metal-dielectric (Au/Si) nanoparticles with a sharp Fano resonance in visible range, which has a predominantly magnetic origin. We demonstrate both, numerically and experimentally, that such hybr…
We present a general theory of circular dichroism in planar chiral nanostructures with rotational symmetry. It is demonstrated, analytically, that the handedness of the incident field's polarization can control whether a nanostructure induces either absorption or scattering losses, even when the total optical loss (extinction) is polarization-independent. We show that this effect is a consequence of modal interference so that strong circular dichroism in absorption and scattering can be engineered by combining Fano resonances with planar chiral nanoparticle clusters.
We present a new and robust approach for interpreting the physics of Fano resonances in planar oligomer structures of both metallic and dielectric nanoparticles. We reveal a key mechanism for Fano resonances by demonstrating that such resonances can be generated purely from the interference of nonorthogonal collective eigenmodes, which are clearly identified based on the coupled-dipole approximation. We prove analytically a general theorem to identify the number of collective eigenmodes that can be excited in ring-type nanoparticle oligomers and further demonstrate that no dark mode excitation…
The development of new approaches to tuning the resonant magnetic response of simple all-dielectric nanostructures is very important in modern nanophotonics. Here we show that a resonant magnetic octupole (MOCT) response can be obtained by dividing a solid rectangular silicon block to an oligomer structure with the introduction of narrow gaps between four nanocubes. We control and tune the spectral position of the MOCT resonance by varying the distance between the nanocubes. We demonstrate that several magnetic hot-spots related to the MOCT resonance can be located in the gaps creating a stron…
The study of nanostructured artificial media for optics has expanded rapidly over the last few decades, coupled with improvements of fabrication technology that have enabled investigation of previously unrealisable optical scattering systems. Such development is complemented by renewed impetus to understand the physics of optical scattering from complex subwavelength geometry and nanoparticle systems. Here I investigate specifically the optical properties of closely packed arrangements of nanoparticles, known as nanoparticle oligomers, which provide an intuitive platform for analytical and num…
We investigate numerically Fano resonances excited in periodic arrays of dielectric, metallic and left-handed cylinders. Of particular interest are Fano resonances excited in the linear array of cylin- ders. We analyze spatial distribution and symmetry of electromagnetic field and discuss the relation between observed Fano resonances and frequency spectra of two-dimensional arrays of cylinders.
General concept of Fano resonance is considered so that to show the possibility of this resonance in space. Using a recently found solution for a Bessel wave beam impinging a dielectric sphere, we analyze the electromagnetic fields near a microsphere with different optical size and permittivity values. We theoretically reveal a spatial Fano resonance when a resonant mode of the sphere interferes with {an amount of } non-resonant modes. This resonance results in a giant jump of the electric field behind the sphere impinged by the first-order Bessel beam. The local minimum of the electromagnetic…
Fano resonance has raised great attention in nanophotonics attributing to its unique properties. In this work, we study the imaging function of Fano-resonant silicon metasurfece governed by quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs). First, by breaking the in-plane symmetry of nanodisks, a symmetry-protected quasi-BIC is excited with the emergence of a sharp Fano resonance. The near field distributions, multipole contributions and radiation patterns of the metasurface are performed to uncover the mechanism and characteristics of this resonance. In addition, we investigate the imaging function o…
We discuss nanophotonic structures composed of high-index dielectric nanoparticles and present several basic approaches for numerical study of their collective optical response. We also provide comparison on the collective optical properties of dielectric and plasmonic structures, and review experimental demonstrations of Fano resonances in all-dielectric nanoparticle oligomers.
We study the light scattering by plasmonic and dielectric symmetric trimers to investigate the existence of polarization-independent Fano resonances. Plasmonic hybridization theory is revealed to hide simple physics, and we instead provide a simplified model for hybridization to derive a plasmonic trimer's eigenmodes analytically. This approach is demonstrated to accurately recreate full wave simulations of plasmonic trimers and their Fano resonances. We are subsequently able to deduce the grounds for modal interference in plasmonic trimers and the related formation of Fano resonances. However…
In this research, we report the experimental evidence of the directional Fano resonances at the scattering of a plane, linearly polarized electromagnetic wave by a homogeneous dielectric sphere with high refractive index and low losses. We observe a typical asymmetric Fano profile for the intensity scattered in, practically, any given direction, while the overall extinction cross section remains Lorentzian. The phenomenon is originated in the interference of the selectively excited electric dipolar and quadrupolar modes. The selectivity of the excitation is achieved by the proper choice of the…
Subwavelength structures demonstrate many unusual optical properties which can be employed for engineering functional metadevices, as well as scattering of light and invisibility cloaking. Here we demonstrate that the suppression of light scattering for any direction of observation can be achieved for an uniform dielectric object with high refractive index, in a sharp contrast to the cloaking with multilayered plasmonic structures suggested previously. Our finding is based on the novel physics of cascades of Fano resonances observed in the Mie scattering from a homogeneous dielectric rod. We o…
Recently, the coupling of two different modes of a homogeneous plasmonic particle and their sharply varying spectra were elucidated as Fano resonances; an 'interference' of two spatially orthogonal modes driving each other. On the other hand, the scattering (and extinction) cross-section of a non-absorbing dielectric particle is always the sum of the cross-sections of all mode numbers; and this rules out any such Fano type interference between two different mode numbers. So delectric particles exhibit an interference structure in their extinction spectra only if it manifests in the individual …
We present a new approach to dielectric metasurface design that relies on a single resonator per unit cell and produces robust, high quality-factor Fano resonances. Our approach utilizes symmetry breaking of highly symmetric resonator geoemetries, such as cubes, to induce couplings between the otherwise orthogonal resonator modes. In particular, we design perturbations that couple "bright" dipole modes to "dark" dipole modes whose radiative decay is suppressed by local field effects in the array. Our approach is widely scalable from the near-infrared to radio frequencies. We first unravel the …
Fano resonances induced by symmetry protected bound states in the continuum in dielectric metasurfaces: line-shape prediction by machine learning method
We investigate light scattering by coated spheres composed of a dispersive plasmonic core and a dielectric shell. By writing the absorption cross-section in terms of the internal electromagnetic fields, we demonstrate it is an observable sensitive to interferences that ultimately lead to the Fano effect. Specially, we show that unconventional Fano resonances, recently discovered for homogeneous spheres with large dielectric permittivities, can also occur for metallic spheres coated with single dielectric layers. These resonances arise from the interference between two electromagnetic modes wit…
Metasurface analogues of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) have been a major focus of the nanophotonics field over the past several years due their ability to produce high quality factor (Q-factor) resonances for applications such as low-loss slow light devices and highly sensitive optical sensors. However, Ohmic loss limits the achievable Q-factors in conventional plasmonic EIT metasurfaces to values less than 10, significantly hampering device performance. Here, we report experimental demonstration of a classical analogue of EIT using all-dielectric silicon-based metasurfaces. D…
Broadband light illumination of a mesoscale dielectric sphere makes it possible to reveal new effects that associated with super resonance mode. These include the possibility of generating high-order Fano resonance cascades. The quality factor has the order Q=10^7. Super-resonance-enabled subdiffraction fields localization by mesoscale dielectric sphere under broadband light illuminations (e.g., at wavebands of 400 - 700 nm for refractive index of sphere n=1.5-1.9 and 1500 - 1600 nm for n=3.47) have been investigated. The conditions for the quasi-periodicity of superresonance peaks are establi…
Hybrid dielectric metasurfaces have emerged as a promising approach to enhancing near field confinement and thus achieving high optical nonlinearity using low loss dielectrics. Additional flexibility in design and fabrication of hybrid metasurfaces allows dynamic control of light, which is value-added for a wider range of applications. Here, we demonstrate a tunable and efficient third harmonic generation (THG) via hybrid metasurfaces with phase change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) deposited on top of amorphous silicon nanostructutes. Fano resonance is excited to confine the incident light inside t…
We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a two-scale architecture able to achieve giant field enhancement by simultaneously exploiting both the Rayleigh anomaly and localized surface plasmon resonance. Metallic oligomers composed of colloidal nanospheres are well-known for the ability to strongly enhance the near-field at their plasmonic resonance. However, due to intrinsic nonlocality of the dielectric response of the metals along with their inherent loss, the achievable field enhancement has an ultimate constraint. In this paper we demonstrate that combining plasmonic resonance enhanc…
We show that the frequency spectrum of two dimensional photonic crystals is strongly influenced by Fano resonances which can be excited already in the linear array of dielectric cylinders. To support this claim, we calculate the transmission of electromagnetic wave through linear array of dielectric cylinders and show that frequencies of observed Fano resonances coincides with position of narrow frequency bands found in the spectra of corresponding two-dimensional photonic crystals. Split of frequency band or overlap of two bands, observed in the band structure of photonic structures are also …
The study of resonant dielectric nanostructures with high refractive index is a new research direction in nanoscale optics and metamaterial-inspired nanophotonics. Because of the unique optically-induced electric and magnetic Mie resonances, high-index nanoscale structures are expected to complement or even replace different plasmonic components in a range of potential applications. Here we study strong coupling between modes of a single subwavelength high-index dielectric resonator and analyse the mode transformation and Fano resonances when resonator's aspect ratio varies. We demonstrate tha…
In the quest to enhance light-matter interactions and miniaturize photonics devices, it is crucial to create a strong field enhancement with lower material losses. Here we combine a plasmonic Fano resonance supported by the silver cluster and anapole states realized by the silicon disk to create a larger field enhancement with less loss through a strong coupling effect. Besides, by varying the gap size we find that the resonances wavelength and the Rabi-splitting can be tuned over a wide range of wavelength, which can achieve a giant splitting energy over 300 meV. We further demonstrate that i…
A perfect metal film with a periodic arrangement of cut-through slits, an anisotropic metallic metamaterial film, mimics a dielectric slab and supports guided electromagnetic waves in the direction perpendicular to the slits. Here, we introduce metallic metasurface superlattices that include multiple slits in a period, and demonstrate that the superlattices support the Fano resonances and bound states in the continuum. The number of Fano resonances and bound states depend on the number of slits in a period of superlattices. The metallic metasurface superlattices provide new mechanisms to manip…
We theoretically investigate the plasmonic coupling in heterogenous Al-Ag nanorod dimer. A pronounced Fano dip is found in the extinction spectrum produced by the destructive interference between the bright dipole mode from a short Al nanorod and the dark quadrupole mode from a long Ag nanorod nearby. This Fano resonance can be widely tuned in both wavelength and amplitude by varying the rod dimensions, the separation distance and the local dielectric environment. The Al-Ag heterogeneous nanorod dimer shows a high sensitivity to the surrounding environment with a local surface plasmon resonanc…
We consider light scattering by two dimensional arrays of high-index dielectric spheres arranged into the triangular lattice. It is demonstrated that in the case a triple degeneracy of resonant leaky modes in the Gamma-point the scattering spectra exhibit a complicated picture of Fano resonances with extremely narrow line-width. The Fan features are explained through coupled mode theory for a Dirac cone spectrum as a signature of optical bound states in the continuum (BIC). It is found that the standing wave in-Gamma BIC induces a ring of off-Gamma BICs due to different scaling laws for real a…
We study numerically, analytically and experimentally the resonant transmission of light in a waveguide formed by a periodic array of high-index dielectric nanoparticles with a side-coupled resonator. We demonstrate that a resonator with high enough Q-factor provides the conditions for the Fano-type interference allowing to control the resonant transmission of light. We suggest a practical realization of this resonant effect based on the quadrupole resonance of a dielectric particle and demonstrate it experimentally for ceramic spheres at microwaves.
In this Article, we review a novel, rapidly developing field of modern light science named all-dielectric nanophotonics. This branch of nanophotonics is based on the properties of high-index dielectric nanoparticles which allow for controlling both magnetic and electric responses of a nanostructured matter. Here, we discuss optical properties of high-index dielectric nanoparticles, methods of their fabrication, and recent advances in practical applications, including the quantum source emission engineering, Fano resonances in all-dielectric nanoclusters, surface enhanced spectroscopy and sensi…
The active photonics based on the two-dimensional material graphene has attracted enormous interests for developing the tunable and compact optical devices with high efficiency. Here we integrate graphene into the Fano-resonant all-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of silicon split resonators, and systematically investigate the strong interaction between graphene and the highly localized hot inside feed gaps in the near infrared regime. The numerical results show that the integrated graphene can substantially reduce the Fano resonance due to the coupling effect between the intrinsic absorptio…
Frequency and transmission spectrum of two-dimensional array of metallic rods is investigated numerically. Based on the recent analysis of the band structure of two-dimensional photonic crystal with dielectric rods [P. Markoš, Phys. Rev. A 92 043814 (2015)] we identify two types of bands in the frequency spectrum: Bragg (P) bands resulting from a periodicity and Fano (F) bands which arise from Fano resonances associated with each of the cylinders within the periodic structure. It is shown that the existence of Fano band in a certain frequency range is manifested by a Fano resonance in the tran…
The behavior of Fano resonance and the reversal of near field optical binding force of dimers over different substrates have not been studied so far. In this work, we observe that if the closely located plasmonic cube homodimers over glass or high permittivity dielectric substrate are illuminated with plane wave polarized parallel to dimer axis, no reversal of optical binding force occurs. But if we apply the same set-up over a plasmonic substrate, stable Fano resonance occurs along with the reversal of near field binding force. It is observed that during such Fano resonance stronger coupling …
Fano mechanism is the universal explanation of asymmetric resonance appearing in different systems. We report the evidence of Fano-like resonance in selective reflection from a resonant two-level medium. We draw an analogy with the asymmetric resonance previously obtained for the coupled oscillators. We also take into account the effects of dielectric background and local-field correction and connect our results with optical bistability.
Based on the substantial difference in the response time for the resonant and background partitions at stepwise variations of the exiting signal, a simple exactly integrable model describing the dynamic Fano resonance (DFRs) is proposed. The model does not have any fitting parameters, may include any number of resonant partitions and exhibits high accuracy. It is shown that at the point of the destructive interference any sharp variation of the amplitude of the excitation (no matter an increase or a decrease) gives rise to pronounced "flashes" in the intensity of the output signal. In particul…
Localized and propagating surface plasmon resonances are known to show very pronounced interactions if they are simultaneously excited in the same nanostructure. Here we study the fano interference that occurs between localized (LSPR) and propagating (SPP) modes by means of phase sensitive spectroscopic ellipsometry. The sample structures consist of periodic gratings of gold nanodisks on top of a continuous gold layer and a thin dielectric spacer, in which the structural dimensions were tuned in such a way that the dipolar LSPR mode and the propagating SPP modes are excited in the same spectra…
Resonant metasurfaces have received extensive attention due to their sharp spectral feature and extraordinary field enhancement. In this work, by breaking the in-plane symmetry of silicon nanopillars, we achieve a sharp Fano resonance. The far-field radiation and near-field distribution of metasurfaces are calculated and analyzed to further uncover the resonant performance of metasurfaces. Moreover, the theoretical derivation and simulation exhibit an inverse quadratic dependence of Q-factors on asymmetry parameters, revealing that the resonance is governed by the symmetry-protected bound stat…
Single metallic nanorods acting as half-wave antennas in the optical range exhibit an asymmetric, multi-resonant scattering spectrum that strongly depends on both their length and dielectric properties. Here we show that such spectral features can be easily understood in terms of Fano-like interference between adjacent plasmon resonances. On the basis of analytical and numerical results for different geometries, we demonstrate that Fano resonances may appear for such single-particle nanoantennas provided that interacting resonances overlap in both spatial and frequency domains.
We report the observation of a Fano resonance between continuum Mie scattering and a narrow Bragg band in synthetic opal photonic crystals. The resonance leads to a transmission spectrum exhibiting a Bragg dip with an asymmetric profile, which can be tunably reversed to a Bragg rise. The Fano asymmetry parameter is linked with the dielectric contrast between the permittivity of the filler and the specific value determined by the opal matrix. The existence of the Fano resonance is directly related to disorder due to non-uniformity of a-SiO2 opal spheres. Proposed theoretical "quasi-3D" model pr…
We consider optical response induced by bound states in the continuum (BICs) in arrays of dielectric spheres. By combining quasi-mode expansion technique with coupled mode theory (CMT) we put forward a theory of the optical response by high-Q resonance surrounding BICs in momentum space. The central result are analytical expressions for the CMT parameters, which can be easily calculated from the eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors of the interaction matrix of the scattering systems. The results obtained are verified in comparison against exact numerical solutions to demonstrate that the CMT appr…
Controlling the near field optical binding force can be a key factor for particle clustering, aggregation and localized surface plasmon sensors. So far there is no generic way to reverse the near field optical binding force for plasmonic or dielectric nano-dimers of distinct shapes (cube, cylinder, ring, sphere). In this article, for both plasmonic and dielectric objects, we have demonstrated a general way to control the reversal of near field binding force for different shaped dimer sets. The force reversal is achieved by simple breaking of symmetry, considering the nano particles are half or…
Strong spatial confinement and highly reduced dielectric screening provide monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with strong many-body effects, thereby possessing optically forbidden excitonic states (i.e., dark excitons) at room temperature. Herein, we explore the interaction of surface plasmons with dark excitons in hybrid systems consisting of stacked gold nanotriangles (AuNTs) and monolayer WS2. We observe a narrow Fano resonance when the hybrid system is surrounded by water, and we attribute the narrowing of the spectral Fano linewidth to the plasmon-enhanced decay of dark K-…
We present a microscopic model describing the transition to strong coupling regime for an emitter resonantly coupled to a surface plasmon in a metal-dielectric structure. We demonstrate that the shape of scattering spectra is determined by an interplay of two distinct mechanisms. First is the near-field coupling between the emitter and the plasmon mode which underpins energy exchange between the system components and gives rise to exciton-induced transparency minimum in scattering spectra prior the transition to strong coupling regime. The second mechanism is Fano interference between the plas…
In this paper, we present a plasmonic refractometric sensor that works under normal incidence; allowing its integration on a fiber tip. The sensor's material and geometry exploit the large scattering cross-section given by high-contrast of the index of refraction subwavelength dielectric gratings. Our design generates a hybrid plasmonic-Fano resonance due to the interference between the surface plasmon resonance and the grating response. We optimize the sensor with a merit function that combines the quality parameter of the resonance and the field enhancement at the interaction volume where th…
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) and Fano resonances in planar photonic lattices, including metasurfaces and photonic crystal slabs, have been studied extensively in recent years. Typically, the BICs and Fano resonances are associated with the second stop bands open at the second-order Gamma ($Γ$) point. This paper address the fundamental properties of the fourth stop band accompanied by BICs at the third-order $Γ$ point in one-dimensional (1D) leaky-mode photonic lattices. At the fourth stop band, one band edge mode suffers radiation loss, thereby generating a Fano resonance, while the ot…
Freed from phase-matching constraints, plasmonic metasurfaces have contributed significantly to the control of the optical nonlinearity and enhancing the nonlinear generation efficiency by engineering subwavelength meta-atoms. However, the high dissipative losses and the inevitable thermal heating limit their applicability in nonlinear nanophotonics. All-dielectric metasurfaces, supporting both electric and magnetic Mie-type resonances in their nanostructures, have appeared as a promising alternative to nonlinear plasmonics. High-index dielectric nanostructures, allowing additional magnetic re…
Fingerprint spectral response of several materials with terahertz electromagnetic radiation indicates that terahertz technology is an effective tool for sensing applications. However, sensing few nanometer thin-film of dielectrics with much longer terahertz waves (1 THz = 0.3 mm) is challenging. Here, we demonstrate a quasi-bound state in the continuum (BIC) resonance for sensing of nanometer scale thin analyte deposited on a flexible metasurface. The large sensitivity originates from strong local field confinement of the quasi-BIC Fano resonance state and extremely low absorption loss of a lo…
