We analyse the classical and quantum dynamics of a Bianchi I model in the presence of a small negative cosmological constant characterizing its evolution in term of the dust-time dualism. We demonstrate that in a canonical metric approach, the cosmological singularity is removed in correspondence to a positive defined value of the dust energy density. Furthermore, the quantum Big-Bounce is connected to the Universe turning point via a well-defined semiclassical limit. Then we can reliably infer that the proposed scenario is compatible with a cyclical Universe picture. We also show how, when the contribution of the dust energy density is sufficiently high, the proposed scenario can be extended to the Bianchi IX cosmology and therefore how it can be regarded as a paradigm for the generic cosmological model. Finally, we investigate the origin of the observed cut-off on the cosmological dynamics, demonstrating how the Big-Bounce evolution can be mimicked by the same semiclassical scenario, where the negative cosmological constant is replaced via a polymer discretization of the Universe volume. A direct proportionality law between such two parameters is then established.
Many cosmological scenarios envisage either a bounce of the universe at early times, or collapse of matter locally to form a black hole which re-expands into a new expanding universe region. Energy conditions preclude this happening for ordinary matter in general relativistic universes, but scalar or dilatonic fields can violate some of these conditions, and so could possibly provide bounce behaviour. In this paper we show that such bounces cannot occur in Kantowski-Sachs models without violating the {\it reality condition} $\dotϕ^2\geq 0$. This also holds true for other isotropic spatially ho…
We examine the dynamical consequences of homogeneous cosmological magnetic fields in the framework of loop quantum cosmology. We show that a big-bounce occurs in a collapsing magnetized Bianchi I universe, thus extending the known cases of singularity-avoidance. Previous work has shown that perfect fluid Bianchi I universes in loop quantum cosmology avoid the singularity via a bounce. The fluid has zero anisotropic stress, and the shear anisotropy in this case is conserved through the bounce. By contrast, the magnetic field has nonzero anisotropic stress, and shear anisotropy is not conserved …
The detailed formulation for loop quantum cosmology (LQC) in the Bianchi I model with a massless scalar field was recently constructed. In this paper, its effective dynamics with the LQC discreteness corrections is studied and the equations of motion are analytically solved, showing that the big bang singularity is replaced by the big bounces, which take place up to three times, once in each diagonal direction, whenever each of the area scale factors approaches its critical value in the Planck regime measured by the reference of the scalar field momentum.
We analyze the dynamics of the Bianchi I model in the presence of stiff matter, an ultrarelativistic component and a small negative cosmological constant. We quantize this model in the framework of the polymer quantum mechanics, in order to introduce cut-off features in the minisuperspace dynamics. We then apply to the polymer Wheeler-DeWitt equation, emerging from the Dirac constraint, an adiabatic approximation a la Vilenkin, which treats the Universe volume as a quasi-classical variable, becoming de facto the dynamical clock for the pure quantum degrees of freedom, here identified in the Un…
We numerically investigate the solutions to the effective equations of the Bianchi II model within the "improved" Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) dynamics. The matter source is a massless scalar field. We perform a systematic study of the space of solutions, and focus on the behavior of several geometrical observables. We show that the big-bang singularity is replaced by a bounce and the point-like singularities do not saturate the energy density bound. There are up to three directional bounces in the scale factors, one global bounce in the expansion, the shear presents up to four local maxima an…
We present the affine coherent state quantization of the Bianchi I model. As in our previous paper on quantum theory of Friedmann models, we employ a variable associated with a perfect fluid to play a role of clock. Then we deparameterize the model. A distinctive feature, absent in isotropic models, is an extra non-holonomic constraint, which survives the deparameterization and constrains the range of physical variables. The appearance of the constraint reflects the `amplification' of singularity due to anisotropy. The quantization smoothes the extra constraint and allows quantum contracting t…
We show that the Nieh-Yan topological invariant breaks projective symmetry and loses its topological character in presence of non vanishing nonmetricity. The notion of the Nieh-Yan topological invariant is then extended to the generic metric-affine case, defining a generalized Nieh-Yan term, which allows to recover topologicity and projective invariance, independently. As a concrete example a class of modified theories of gravity is considered and its dynamical properties are investigated in a cosmological setting. In particular, bouncing cosmological solutions in Bianchi I models are derived.…
For the Bianchi type I space-time (vacuum or with a massless scalar field), the loop quantum cosmology bounce can be viewed as a rapid transition between two classical solutions, with a simple transformation rule relating the Kasner exponents of the two epochs. This transformation rule can be extended to other Bianchi space-times under the assumption that during the loop quantum cosmology bounce the contribution of the spatial curvature to the Hamiltonian constraint is negligible compared to the kinetic terms. For the vacuum Bianchi type IX space-time there are transformation rules for how eac…
The detailed formulation for loop quantum cosmology (LQC) in the Bianchi I model with a scalar massless field has been constructed. In this paper, its effective dynamics is studied in two improved strategies for implementing the LQC discreteness corrections. Both schemes show that the big bang is replaced by the big bounces, which take place up to three times, once in each diagonal direction, when the area or volume scale factor approaches the critical values in the Planck regime measured by the reference of the scalar field momentum. These two strategies give different evolutions: In one sche…
We extend the notion of the Nieh-Yan invariant to generic metric-affine geometries, where both torsion and nonmetricity are taken into account. Notably, we show that the properties of projective invariance and topologicity can be independently accommodated by a suitable choice of the parameters featuring this new Nieh-Yan term. We then consider a special class of modified theories of gravity able to promote the Immirzi parameter to a dynamical scalar field coupled to the Nieh-Yan form, and we discuss in more detail the dynamics of the effective scalar tensor theory stemming from such a revised…
In the loop quantum cosmology effective dynamics for the vacuum Bianchi type I and type IX space-times, a non-singular bounce replaces the classical singularity. The bounce can be approximated as an instantaneous transition between two classical vacuum Bianchi I solutions, with simple transition rules relating the solutions before and after the bounce. These transition rules are especially simple when expressed in terms of the Misner variables: the evolution of the mean logarithmic scale factor is reversed, while the shape parameters are unaffected. As a result, the loop quantum cosmology effe…
We solve the complex Einstein equations for Bianchi I and II models formulated in the Ashtekar variables. We then solve the reality conditions to obtain a parametrization of the space of Lorentzian solutions in terms of real canonically conjugate variables. In the Ashtekar variables, the dynamics of the universe point particle is governed by only a curved supermetric -- there is no potential term. In the usual metric formulation the particle bounces off a potential wall in flat superspace. We consider possible characterizations of this ``bounce'' in the potential-free Ashtekar variables.
We study numerically the solutions to the effective equations of Bianchi IX spacetimes within Loop Quantum Cosmology. We consider Bianchi IX models with and without inverse triad corrections whose matter content is a scalar field without mass. The solutions are classified using the classical observables. We show that both effective theories --with lapse N=V and N=1-- solve the big bang singularity and reproduce the classical dynamics far from the bounce. Moreover, due to the spatial compactness, there is an infinity number of bounces and recollapses. We study the limit of large volume and show…
We analyze the Bianchi I cosmology in the presence of a massless scalar field and describe its dynamics via a semiclassical and quantum polymer approach. We investigate the morphology of the emerging Big Bounce by adopting three different sets of configurational variables: the natural Ashtekar connections, the Universe volume plus two anisotropy coordinates and a set of anisotropic volume-like coordinates (the latter two sets of variables would coincide in the case of an isotropic Universe). In the semiclassical analysis we demonstrate that the Big Bounce emerges in the dynamics for all the th…
Due to non-perturbative quantum gravitational effects, the classical big bang singularity is replaced by a quantum big bounce of the mean scale factor in loop quantization of Bianchi-I spacetime. An important issue is to understand various differences in the physical properties of the spacetime across the bounce. We investigate this issue in the context of various geometrical structures, identified by Kasner exponents of the metric, which arise on approach to the singularity in the classical theory. Using effective spacetime description of Bianchi-I model in loop quantum cosmology with dust, r…
In classical Bianchi-I spacetimes, underlying conditions for what dictates the singularity structure - whether it is anisotropic shear or energy density, can be easily determined from the generalized Friedmann equation. However, in non-singular bouncing anisotropic models these insights are difficult to obtain in the quantum gravity regime where the singularity is resolved at a non-vanishing mean volume which can be large compared to the Planck volume, depending on the initial conditions. Such non-singular models may also lack a generalized Friedmann equation making the task even more difficul…
In homogeneous and isotropic loop quantum cosmology, gravity can behave repulsively at Planckian energy densities leading to the replacement of the big bang singularity with a big bounce. Yet in any bouncing scenario it is important to include non-linear effects from anisotropies which typically grow during the collapsing phase. We investigate the dynamics of a Bianchi I anisotropic model within the framework of loop quantum cosmology. Using effective semi-classical equations of motion to study the dynamics, we show that the big bounce is still predicted with only differences in detail arising…
Due to the numerical complexities of studying evolution in an anisotropic quantum spacetime, in comparison to the isotropic models, the physics of loop quantized anisotropic models has remained largely unexplored. In particular, robustness of bounce and the validity of effective dynamics have so far not been established. Our analysis fills these gaps for the case of vacuum Bianchi-I spacetime. To efficiently solve the quantum Hamiltonian constraint we perform an implementation of the Cactus framework which is conventionally used for applications in numerical relativity. Using high performance …
In the present paper we discuss dynamic of anisotropic Bianchi I Universe filled by the perfect fluid in teleparallel $f(T)$-gravity. By using as analytical as numerical approaches we confirm the main results of previous authors such as presence of future isotropic attractor and find a number of the new one such as existence of essential number of bounce solutions and possibility to construct late time acceleration without any specific matter.
We provide a quantum picture for the emergence of a bouncing cosmology, according to the idea that a semiclassical behavior of the Universe towards the singularity is not available in many relevant Minisuperspace models. In particular, we study the Bianchi I model in vacuum adopting the isotropic Misner variable as an internal clock for the quantum evolution. The isomorphism between the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in this Minisuperspace representation and the Klein-Gordon one for a relativistic scalar field allows to identify the positive and negative frequency solutions as associated to the colla…
We analyze the Bianchi I cosmology in the presence of a massless scalar field and describe its dynamics via a semiclassical and quantum polymer approach. We study the morphology of the Big Bounce by adopting three different sets of configurational variables: the Ashtekar connections, a set of anisotropic volume-like coordinates and the Universe volume plus two anisotropy coordinates (the latter two sets of variables would coincide in the case of an isotropic Universe). In the semiclassical analysis we demonstrate that the value of the critical matter energy density depends on the Cauchy proble…
We consider the k=1 Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) model within loop quantum cosmology, paying special attention to the existence of an ambiguity in the quantization process. In spatially non-flat anisotropic models such as Bianchi II and IX, the standard method of defining the curvature through closed holonomies is not admissible. Instead, one has to implement the quantum constraints by approximating the connection via open holonomies. In the case of flat k=0 FRW and Bianchi I models, these two quantization methods coincide, but in the case of the closed $k$=1 FRW model they might yield diff…
The Bianchi IX cosmological model (through Bianchi I and II) is analyzed in the framework of a generalized uncertainty principle. In particular, the anisotropies of the Universe are described by a deformed Heisenberg algebra. Three main results are in order. (i) The Universe can not isotropize because of the deformed Kasner dynamics. (ii) The triangular allowed domain is asymptotically stationary with respect to the particle (Universe) and its bounces against the walls are not interrupted by the deformed effects. (iii) No reflection law can be in obtained since the Bianchi II model is no longe…
We study the behaviour of Bianchi class A universes containing an ultra-stiff isotropic ghost field and a fluid with anisotropic pressures which is also ultra-stiff on the average. This allows us to investigate whether cyclic universe scenarios, like the ekpyrotic model, do indeed lead to isotropisation on approach to a singularity (or bounce) in the presence of dominant ultra-stiff pressure anisotropies. We specialise to consider the closed Bianchi type IX universe and show that when the anisotropic pressures are stiffer on average than any isotropic ultra-stiff fluid then, if they dominate o…
The effective quantum dynamics of Bianchi I spacetime is addressed within the statistical regularization scheme in Quantum Reduced Loop Gravity. The case of a minimally coupled massless scalar field is studied and compared with the effective $\barμ-$Loop Quantum Cosmology. The dynamics provided by the two approaches match in the semiclassical limit but differ significantly after the bounces. Analytical and numerical inspections show that energy density, expansion scalar and shear are bounded also in Quantum Reduced Loop Gravity and the classical singularity is resolved for generic initial cond…
We investigate the classical and quantum behavior of a Bianchi I model in the presence of a stiff matter contribution when the Vilenkin interpretation of the wave function of the Universe is taken into account. We study its evolution in the so-called polymer representation of quantum mechanics, in order to characterize the modifications that a discrete nature in the isotropic variable of the Universe induces on the morphology of the cosmological singularity. We demonstrate that in such a model the Big-Bang singularity is removed at a semiclassical level in favor of a Big-Bounce when a lattice …
The detailed formulation of loop quantum cosmology with higher order holonomy corrections has been constructed recently in the homogeneous and isotropic spacetime, yet it is important to extend the higher order holonomy corrections to include the effects of anisotropy which typically grow during the collapsing phase. In this paper we investigate the Bianchi I model in $\barμ'$ scheme which truly captures the regularization of the Hamiltonian constraint. To compare with the earlier works and provide a comparison with the $\barμ'$ scheme, we also investigate the $\barμ$ scheme although it has ma…
We derive transition rules for Kasner exponents in bouncing Bianchi I models with generic perfect fluid matter fields for a broad class of modified gravity theories where cosmological singularities are resolved and replaced by a non-singular bounce. This is a generalization of results obtained previously in limiting curvature mimetic gravity and loop quantum cosmology. A geometric interpretation is provided for the transition rule as a linear map in the Kasner plane. We show that the general evolution of anisotropies in a Bianchi I universe -- including during the bounce phase -- is equivalent…
Anisotropies generically dominate the earliest stages of expansion of a homogeneous universe. They are particularly relevant in bouncing models, since shears grow in the contracting phase of the cosmos, making the isotropic situation unstable. This paper extends the study of cosmological perturbations in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) to anisotropic Bianchi I models that contain a bounce followed by a phase of slow-roll inflation. We show that, although the shear tensor dilutes and the universe isotropizes soon after the bounce, cosmic perturbations retain memory of this short anisotropic phase.…
The behaviour of the flat anisotropic model of the Universe with a scalar field is explored within the framework of quantum cosmology. The principal moment of the account of an anisotropy is the presence either negative potential barrier or positive repelling wall. In the first case occur the above barrier reflection of the wave function of the Universe, in the second one there is bounce off a potential wall. The further evolution of the Universe represents an exponential inflating with fast losses of an anisotropy and approach to the standard cosmological scenario.
We propose a simple solution to the magnetogenesis problem based on cyclic cosmology. It is demonstrated that magnetic fields, of sufficient strengths to account for the present observational bounds, can be created in the contracting phase preceding the beginning of the current cosmological cycle. The basic assumption of this model is that the Universe enters a contraction phase essentially empty, characterized by small seed electric fields. In this framework, there is no need for any new theoretical additions to explain magnetogenesis, such as new scalar fields or non-minimal couplings betwee…
We examine the dynamics of a Bianchi IX model on a 4-dim brane embedded in a 5-dim conformally flat empty bulk with a timelike extra dimension. Einstein's equations on the brane reduces to a 6-dim Hamiltonian dynamical system with additional terms that implement nonsingular bounces in the model. The phase space of the model has two critical points (a saddle-center-center and a center-center-center) in a finite region of phase space, and two asymptotic de Sitter critical points, one acting as an attractor to late-time dynamics. The saddle-center-center engenders in the phase space the topology …
We examine the Hamiltonian dynamics of bouncing Bianchi IX cosmologies in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. The $6$-dim phase space presents two critical points, one asymptotic de Sitter attractor at infinity and a $2$-dim invariant plane. We identified four distinct parameter domains $A$, $B$, $C$ and $D$ for which the pair of critical points engenders distinct features in the dynamics. In the domain $A$ the dynamics consists basically of periodic bouncing orbits, or oscillatory orbits with a finite number of bounces. The center with multiplicity two engenders in its neighborhood the topology of stabl…
We present quantum (and classical) Bianchi I model, with free massless scalar field, of the Universe. Our model may be treated as the simplest prototype of the quantum BKL (Belinskii-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz) scenario. The quantization is done by making use of the nonstandard Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC). Since the method is quite new, we present in details its motivation and the formalism. To make the nonstandard method easily understandable, we include its application to the FRW model. In the nonstandard LQC, we first solve the Hamiltonian constraint of the theory at the classical level and find…
We perform dynamical analysis of anisotropic Rastall cosmologies and, in particular Kantowski-Sachs, locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) Bianchi I and LRS Bianchi III cosmologies. Using dynamical system techniques, a qualitative analysis of cosmological equations yield physically interesting cases which are in agreement with observations such as de Sitter, accelerating, stable attractors are isotropic. Features such as isotropization and cosmological bounce are discussed in detail.
We analyze the phase space of Bianchi I cosmologies filled by a spin fluid in the framework of $f(R)$-gravity with torsion using a combination of the dynamical systems approach and the 1+3 covariant formalism. In the simple case of $f(R)=R^n$ our results allow a quantification of the role of torsion and the spin of the cosmic fluid in the evolution of the cosmology. While torsion is able to modify the cosmological dynamics with respect to the purely metric case, the spin has little influence on the cosmology. We argue that this is due to the different symmetries of the tensor characterizing th…
A new mathematical framework is formulated to derive the effective equations of motion for the constrained quantum system which possesses an internal clock. In the realm close to classical behavior, the quantum evolution is approximated by a finite system of coupled but ordinary differential equations adhered to the weakly imposed Hamiltonian constraint. For the simplified version of loop quantum cosmology in the Bianchi I model with a free massless scalar filed, the resulting effective equations of motion affirm the bouncing scenario predicted by the previous studies: The big bang singularity…
We address the important issue of isotropisation of a pre-bounce contracting phase in $f(R)$ gravity, which would be relevant to construct any viable nonsingular bouncing scenario in $f(R)$ gravity. The main motivation behind this work is to investigate whether the $f(R)$ gravity, by itself, can isotropise a contracting universe starting initially with small anisotropy without incorporating a super-stiff or non-ideal fluid, that is impossible in general relativity. Considering Bianchi I cosmology and employing a dynamical system analysis, we see that this is not possible for $R^n$ ($n>1$) and …
We investigate classically non-singular bounces caused by dark energy. In the presence of positive spatial curvature, vacuum energy, either in the form of a cosmological constant or a scalar field potential, allows for an open set of initial conditions leading to non-singular bounces, without any violation of the null energy condition. We study anisotropic Bianchi IX cosmologies, and demonstrate that they can even have multiple bounces, accompanied by intricate evolutions of the anisotropies that provide a non-singular analogue of mixmaster crunches. The relation of these solutions to more com…
The comprehensive formulation for loop quantum cosmology in the spatially flat, isotropic model was recently constructed. In this paper, the methods are extended to the anisotropic Bianchi I cosmology. Both the precursor and the improved strategies are applied and the expected results are established: (i) the scalar field again serves as an internal clock and is treated as emergent time; (ii) the total Hamiltonian constraint is derived by imposing the fundamental discreteness and gives the evolution as a difference equation; and (iii) the physical Hilbert space, Dirac observables and semi-clas…
A Bianchi IX Mixmaster spacetime is the most general spatially homogeneous solution of Einstein's equations and it can represent the space-averaged Universe. We introduce two novel mechanisms resulting in a Mixmaster Universe with non-singular bounces which are quasi-isotropic. A fluid with a non-linear equation of state allows non-singular bounces. Using negative anisotropic stresses successfully isotropises this Universe and mitigates the well known Mixmaster chaotic behaviour. Thus the Universe can be an eternal Mixmaster, going through an infinite series of different cycles separated by bo…
There is a wide consensus on the correct dynamics of the background in loop quantum cosmology. In this article we make a systematic investigation of the duration of inflation by varying what we think to be the most important "unknowns" of the model: the way to set initial conditions, the amount of shear at the bounce and the shape of the inflaton potential.
Cosmological bounces occur in many gravity theories. We define singularity scattering maps relating large scale geometries before and after the bounce (assuming no BKL oscillations) and encoding microscopic details of the theory. By classifying all suitably local maps we uncover three universal laws: scaling of Kasner exponents, canonical transformation of matter, directional metric scaling. These are indeed obeyed by Bianchi I bounces in string theory, loop quantum cosmology and modified matter models; our classification then determines how inhomogeneities and anisotropies traverse bounces, a…
The Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe and Bianchi I,II universes are investigated in the framework of the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) with a linear and a quadratic term in Planck length and momentum, which predicts minimum measurable length as well as maximum measurable momentum. We get a dynamic cosmological bounce for the FRW universe. With Bianchi universe, we found that the universe may be still isotropic by implementing GUP. Moreover, the wall velocity appears to be stationary with respect to the universe velocity which means that when the momentum of the Universe evol…
We use the vacuum Bianchi I model as an example to investigate the concept of physical evolution in Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) in the absence of the massless scalar field which has been used so far in the literature as an internal time. In order to retrieve the system dynamics when no such a suitable clock field is present, we explore different constructions of families of unitarily related partial observables. These observables are parameterized, respectively, by: (i) one of the components of the densitized triad, and (ii) its conjugate momentum; each of them playing the role of an evolutio…
We present and expand the simplest possible quantum cosmological bouncing model already discussed in previous works: the trajectory formulation of quantum mechanics applied to cosmology (through the Wheeler-De Witt equation) in the FLRW minisuper- space without spatial curvature. The initial conditions that were previously assumed were such that the wave function would not change its functional form but instead provide a dynamics to its parameters. Here, we consider a more general situation, in practice con- sisting of modified Gaussian wave functions, aiming at obtaining a non singular bounce…
We present a review on basic aspects of quantum cosmology in the presence of cut-off physics. We first analyze how the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in a pure metric approach describes the quantum Universe, showing how the singularity is not removed. We then discuss basic features of loop quantum cosmology. For the isotropic Universe, we compare the original $μ_0$ scheme and the most commonly accepted formulation, the $\barμ$ scheme. Some results concerning the Bianchi Universes are also discussed. Finally, we consider some relevant criticisms on the real link between full loop quantum gravity and i…
