We study the potential of the next $ep$ collider, namely LHeC, with two options $\sqrt{s}=1.3$ TeV $\sqrt{s}=1.98$ TeV, to search for excited spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 neutrinos. We calculate the single production cross section of excited spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 neutrinos according to their effective currents describing their interactions between gauge bosons and SM leptons. We choose the $ν^{\star}\rightarrow eW$ decay mode of excited neutrinos and $W\rightarrow jj$ decay mode of $W$-boson for the analysis. We put some kinematical cuts for the final state detectable particles and plot the invariant mass distributions for signal and the corresponding backgrounds. In order to obtain accessible limits for excited neutrino couplings, we show the $f-f^{\prime}$ and $c_{iV}-c_{iA}$ contour plots for excited spin-1/2 and excited spin-3/2 neutrinos, respectively.
We consider the production of a heavy neutrino and its possible signals at the Large Hadron-electron Collider (LHeC) in the context of an inverse-seesaw model for neutrino mass generation. The inverse seesaw model extends the Standard Model (SM) particle content by adding two neutral singlet fermions for each lepton generation. It is a well motivated model in the context of generating non-zero neutrino masses and mixings. The proposed future LHeC machine presents us with a particularly interesting possibility to probe such extensions of the SM with new leptons due to the presence of an electro…
We investigate the possibility of detecting Majorana neutrinos at the Large Hadron-electron Collider (LHeC), an electron-proton collision mode at CERN. We study the $l_j^{+} + 3 jets$ ($l_j\equiv e ,μ,τ$) final states which are, due to leptonic number violation, a clear signature for intermediate Majorana neutrino contributions. Such signals are not possible if the heavy neutrinos have Dirac nature. The interactions between Majorana neutrinos and the Standard Model (SM) particles are obtained from an effective lagrangian approach. We present our results for the total cross section as a functio…
We study the possibility of the LHeC facility to disentangle different new physics contributions to the production of heavy sterile Majorana neutrinos in the lepton number violating channel $e^{-}p\rightarrow l_{j}^{+} + 3 jets$ ($l_j\equiv e ,μ$). This is done investigating the angular and polarization trails of effective operators with distinct Dirac-Lorentz structure contributing to the Majorana neutrino production, which parameterize new physics from a higher energy scale. We study an asymmetry in the angular distribution of the final anti-lepton and the initial electron polarization effec…
As an important sequential work of the S-wave $B_c^{(*)}$ ($^1S_0(^3S_1)$) meson production at the large hadron electron collider (LHeC), we investigate the production of the P-wave excited $B_c^{**}$ states ($^1P_1$ and $^3P_J$ with $J=0,1,2$) via photoproduction mechanism within the framework of nonrelativistic QCD at the LHeC. Generally, the $e^-+P \to γ+ g \rightarrow B_c^{**} +b+ \bar{c}$ process is considered as the main production mechanism at an electron-proton collider due to the large luminosity of the gluon. However, according to our experience on the S-wave $B_c^{(*)}$ meson produc…
We study the potential of testing the seesaw type I and III models at the LHeC, an e-p collision mode at the CERN collider. The e-p collision mode provides an excellent place to study lepton number violating process e^- p \to N j + X \to l^+ W^- j + X with W^- into hadron jets. Here N is a heavy Majorana neutrino and j is a hard hadron jet. With the electron energy E_e = 140 GeV and proton energy E_p = 7 TeV, we find that the cross section for the heavy neutrino N production can be as large as a few fb for the mass scale as high as 1 TeV, higher than what can be achieved by the p-p collision m…
We explore leptoquark production and decay for the $\tilde{R}_{2}$ class of models at the proposed $e^{-} p$ collider LHeC, planned to operate with 150 GeV electron and 7 TeV proton beams. In addition to the coupling of leptoquark with the lepton and jet, the model also has right handed neutrinos, coupled to the leptoquark. We analyse the collider signatures of a number of final states, that can originate from leptoquark decay into the standard model particles, as well as, the final states that originate from further decay of the heavy neutrinos, produced from leptoquark. We find that the fina…

Extending the Standard Model with right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) is well motivated by the observation of neutrino oscillations. In the type-I seesaw model, the RHNs interact with the SM particles via tiny mixings with the active neutrinos, which makes their discovery in the laboratory, and in particular at collider experiments in general challenging. In this work we instead consider an extension of the type-I seesaw model with the addition of a leptoquark (LQ), and employ a non-minimal production mechanism of the RHN via LQ decay, which is unsuppressed by neutrino mixing. We focus on relatively…
The inclusion of heavy neutral leptons (right-handed neutrinos) to the Standard Model (SM) particle content is one of the best motivated ways to account for the observed neutrino masses and flavor mixing. The modification of the charged and neutral currents from active-sterile mixing of the neutral leptons can provide novel signatures which can be tested at the future collider experiments. In this article, we explore the discovery prospect of a very heavy right handed neutrino to probe such extensions at the future collider experiments like Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) and liner colli…
Considering the theoretical constraints on the charged-current (CC) non-standard neutrino interaction (NSI) parameters in a simplified $W'$ model, we study the sensitivities of the Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) and Future Circular Collider-hadron electron (FCC-he) to the CC NSI parameters through the subprocess $e^{-}q \to W' \to v_{e}q'$. Our results show that the LHeC with $\mathcal{L} = 100\;{\rm fb}^{-1}$ is a little more sensitive to the CC NSI parameters than that of the high-luminosity (HL) LHC, and the absolute values of the lower limits on the CC NSI parameters at the FCC-he a…
We study the cross-section of production of a single $W^-$ boson in association with a neutrino through the process $e^-p \to e^-γ^*p \to ν_eW^- p$. Additionally, we obtain the anomalous couplings $Δκ_γ$ and $λ_γ$ of the $W^+W^-γ$ vertex at the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC) and the Future Circular Collider Hadron-Electron (FCC-he). The impact of the polarized beam due to the electron is also analyzed. Our best limits for $Δκ_γ$ and $λ_γ$ at the $95\%$ C.L. are: $Δκ_γ= \pm 0.0017$, $λ_γ= \pm 0.0053$ (unpolarized electron beam) and $Δκ_γ= \pm 0.0013$, $λ_γ= \pm 0.0046$ (polarized electro…
We study the potential of the CERN LHC in the search for the single production of excited neutrino through gauge interactions. Subsequent decays of excited neutrino via gauge interactions are examined. The mass range accessible with the ATLAS detector is obtained.
We study the potential of future high energy e+e- colliders to probe excited neutrino signals in different channels coming from the single production process via gauge interactions. We calculate the production cross section, decay widths and branching ratios of excited spin-3/2 neutrinos according to their effective currents and we compare them with that of the spin-1/2 ones. The signals and corresponding backgrounds are examined in detail to get accessible limits on the masses and couplings of excited spin-3/2 neutrinos.
We analyze the single and pair production of excited neutrinos at the CLIC through the processes $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow ν^{*} \barν$, $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow e^{+}γ^{*} e^{-} \rightarrow e^{+} ν^{*} W^{-}$, and $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow e^{+}γ^{*} γ^{*} e^{-} \rightarrow e^{+} ν^{*} \barν^{*} e^{-}$ ($γ^{*}$ is the Weizsacker-Williams photon). We examine comprehensively the excited neutrino signal and corresponding backgrounds to obtain limits on excited neutrino mass for various values of the integrated luminosity and center-of-mass energy. We show that the obtained bounds are more restricted t…
We study the potential of the linear collider (LC) with sqrt{s}=0.5 TeV, linac-ring type ep collider (LCxLHC) with sqrt{s}=3.74 TeV and the large hadron collider (LHC) with sqrt{s}=14 TeV to search for excited neutrinos through transition magnetic type couplings with gauge bosons. The excited neutrino signal and corresponding backgrounds are studied in detail to obtain accessible mass limits and couplings for these three types of colliders.
The possibility of single and pair excited neutrino production in high energy e+e-, gamma-e and gamma-gamma collisions on linear colliders is studied. The integrated cross sections of these subproceses are calculated. Special attention is paid to search for excited neutrino in e-gamma --> W- W+ e process. Lower limits for the compositeness parameter estimated which will be available on the experiments at VLEPP, SLAC, JLC and DESY future linear colliders.
The production potential of the excited neutrinos at the FCC-based electron-hadron colliders, namely the ERL60$\otimes$FCC with $\sqrt{s}=3.46$ TeV, the ILC$\otimes$FCC with $\sqrt{s}=10$ TeV, and the PWFA-LC$\otimes$FCC with $\sqrt{s}=31.6$ TeV, has been analyzed. The branching ratios of the excited neutrinos have been calculated for the different decay channels and shown that the dominant channel is $ν^{\star}\rightarrow eW^{+}$. We have calculated the production cross sections with the process of $ep\rightarrowν^{\star}q\rightarrow eW^{+}q$ and the decay widths of the excited neutrinos with…
Active Galactic Nuclei are considered as sources of neutrinos, with neutrino energies extending up to 10^{18} eV. It is expected that these highly energetic cosmic neutrinos will be detected by the neutrino telescopes, presently under construction. The detection process is very sensitive to the total muon neutrino cross-section. We examine how the total cross section changes at high energies, by the single production of excited fermions (excited muon and muon-neutrino). For parameters (masses, couplings) of the excited fermions allowed by the experimental constraints, we find that for energies…
We study an exciting dark matter scenario in a radiative neutrino model to explain the X-ray line signal at $3.55$ keV recently reported by XMN-Newton X-ray observatory using data of various galaxy clusters and Andromeda galaxy. We show that the required large cross section for the up-scattering process to explain the X-ray line can be obtained via the resonance of the pseudo-scalar. Moreover this model can be compatible with the thermal production of dark matter and the constraint from the direct detection experiment.
The process of neutrino production of electron positron pairs in a magnetic field of arbitrary strength, where electrons and positrons can be created in the states corresponding to excited Landau levels, is analysed. The mean value of the neutrino energy loss due to the process $ν\to νe^- e^+$ is calculated. The result can be applied for calculating the efficiency of the electron-positron plasma production by neutrinos in the conditions of the Kerr black hole accretion disc considered by experts as the most possible source of a short cosmological gamma burst. The presented research can be also…
We constrain general Dirac neutrino interactions based on the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework extended with right-handed neutrinos $N$ (SMNEFT) using deep inelastic and coherent elastic neutrino scattering, nuclear beta decay, and meson decay data, and high energy electron-proton and proton-proton collider data. We compute the one-loop anomalous dimensions of the low-energy effective field theory (LEFT) below the electroweak scale and of SMNEFT above the electroweak scale. The tree-level matching between LEFT and SMNEFT is performed at the electroweak scale. Currently, the most…
We examine the effect of excited neutrinos on the annihilation of relic neutrinos with ultra high energy cosmic neutrinos for the $ν\barν\to γγ$ process. The contribution of the excited neutrinos to the neutrino-photon decoupling temperature are calculated. We see that photon-neutrino decoupling temperature can be significantly reduced below the obtained value of the Standard Model with the impact of excited neutrinos.
The lepton number violating process, $e^- e^- \to W^- W^-$ has been widely discussed in the Majorana neutrino exchange mechanism. Here, we discuss this process in a composite neutrino model where excited Majorana neutrinos are exchanged. We found several qualitatively different features from the neutrino exchange case: (1) The longitudinally polarized $W$'s are not produced, (2) the neutrinoless double beta decay does not constrain much and a much larger cross section is expected, and (3) CP violating phases may be explored because all excited neutrinos are heavy so that large mixings among th…
For a cold dark matter (DM) originating from the co-annihilation processes, there will be excited state(s) in the dark sector, that may decay or annihilate away shortly after their freeze-out. In this paper we investigate the impact of the decay of these excited states on the effective number of neutrino species, $N_{\rm eff}^{}$, which is an important cosmological parameter and will be tested by the future CMB-S4 project. We work in the framework of pseudo-Dirac DM mode via the Higgs portal. The relic density and the direct detection signal of the DM are calculated, which gives the available …
Neutrinoless double beta decay $(\b\b)_{0ν}$ occurs through the magnetic coupling of dimension five, $λ_W^{(ν*)}/m_{ν*}$, among the excited electron neutrino $ν^*$, electron and $W$ boson if $ν^*$ is a massive Majorana neutrino. If the coupling is not small, i.e., $λ_W^{(ν*)}>1$ the mass of the excited neutrino must not be gless than the $Z$ boson mass, $m_Z$. Since $ν^*$ contributes in the $(\b\b)_{0ν}$ decay as a vertual state, this decay will give an oppotunity to explore the much heavier mass region of $ν^*$. In this paper, we present the decay formula of $(\b\b)_{0ν}$ decay through the $ν…
Neutrinoless double beta decay occurs through the magnetic coupling of dimension five, $λ_W/m_{ν*}$, among the excited electron neutrino $ν^*$, electron and $W$ boson if $ν^*$ is a massive Majorana neutrino. (λ_W m_W / m_{ν*}^2 |\frac{(m_*/m_W) +2}{(m_*/m_W +1)^2} -0.129{m_*/m_W} | <2.13\times 10^{-2}, where $λ_W$ is the relative strength, $m_{ν*}$ is the composite scale and $m_*$ is the mass of excited neutrino. If the coupling is not small, i.e., $λ_W>1$ and $m_{ν*}=m_*$, we find $m_*>3.4 m_W$.
We analyze the potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to search for excited spin-1/2 electrons and neutrinos. Assuming a SU(2)_L X U(1)_Y invariant model, we study in detail the single production of excited electrons and neutrinos and respective backgrounds through the reactions p p -> e+ e- V and e+- νV with V=photon, W, or Z. We show that the LHC will be able to tighten considerably the direct constraints on these possible new states, probing excited lepton masses up to 1-2 TeV depending on their couplings to fermions and gauge bosons.
We propose a new method of producing neutrino pair beam that consists of a mixture of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos of all flavors. The idea is based on a coherent neutrino pair emission from excited ions in circular motion. High energy gamma ray much beyond the keV range may also be produced by a different choice of excited level.
Within a mirror type assignment for the excited composite fermions the neutrino mass term is built up from a Dirac mass, $m_*$, which gives the mass of charged lepton component of the $SU(2)$, right-handed, doublet, and a Majorana mass, $m_L$, for the left-handed component (singlet) of the excited neutrino. The mass matrix is diagonalized leading to two Majorana mass eigenstates. The active neutrino field $ν^*_R$ is thus a superposition of the two mass eigenstates with mixing coefficients which depend on the ratio $m_L/m_*$. We discuss the prospects of discovery of these physical states at the…
The neutrinoless double beta decay transition to the first excited 0^+ collective final state is examined for A=76, 82, 100 and 136 nuclei by assuming light and heavy Majorana neutrino exchange mechanisms as well as the trilinear R-parity violating contributions. Realistic calculations of nuclear matrix elements have been performed within the renormalized quasiparticle random phase approximation. Transitions to the first excited two-quadrupole phonon 0^+ state are described within a boson expansion formalism and alternatively by using the operator recoupling method. We present the sensitivity …
In Gallium detectors for solar neutrinos, the capture rate due to Gamow-Teller transitions to excited states of 71Ge beyond the neutron emission threshold is usually neglected. We make a model calculation to estimate its effect and find that this yields an additional contribution which may be as much as 0.4 SNU, even larger than that from the Isobaric Analog State in 71Ge reached by Fermi transitions, which is normally included in the standard predictions.
We give a brief review of the existing bounds on effective couplings for excited states ($e^*, ν^*, u^*, d^* $) of the ordinary quarks and leptons arising from a composite model scenario. We then explore the phenomenological implications of the hypothesis that the excited neutrino $ν^*$ might be of Majorana type. Recent bounds on the half-life of the $ΔL =2 $ neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) are used to constraint the compositeness effective couplings. We show that the bounds so obtained are roughly of the same order of magnitude as those available from high energy experiments.
A certain class of new physics models includes long-lived particles which are singlet under the Standard Model (SM) gauge group.A displaced vertex is a spectacular signature to probe such particles productions at the high energy colliders, with a negligible SM background. In the context of the minimal gauged $B-L$ extended SM, we consider a pair creation of Majorana right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) at the high energy colliders through the production of the SM and the $B-L$ Higgs bosons and their subsequent decays into RHNs. With parameters reproducing the neutrino oscillation data, we show that t…

We develop the search strategy for a heavy Majorana neutrino via the lepton number violation signal process $p\, e^- \to μ^+ jjj$ at future electron-proton colliders. The signal and dominant standard model background events are generated with the fast detector simulation. We apply the pre-selection criteria and perform the multi-variate analysis based on machine-learning to reject the background. Distributions of representative kinematic observables are presented for both signal and background processes and effects on final limits are compared by inputting two different set of observables when…
We explore a possibility of measuring the magnitude and the Majorana nature of neutrino masses, by using a novel process of neutrino pair emission from excited atoms. Except lepton number non-conserving processes, the neutrino pair ($ν\barν$) emission is the unique process to distinguish the Majorana neutrino from the Dirac neutrino. The small energy difference between atomic levels makes it easier to measure small neutrino masses as indicated by neutrino oscillation experiments. The crucial point is how to enhance the rate of pair emission without enhancing the radiative decay. We have in min…
We study process of radiative neutrino pair emission $|e\rangle \rightarrow |g \rangle + γ+ν\barν$ from coherently excited heavy ions (quantum mixture of two ionic states, the ground and an excited states) in circular motion. Determination of the neutrino mass is found to be possible with simultaneous detection of the photon and one of neutrinos in the pair down to the level of the smallest neutrino mass of order 5 meV in the three flavor scheme.
We investigate the prospects for real-time detection of solar neutrinos via the charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering process in liquid xenon time projection chambers. We use a nuclear shell model, benchmarked with experimental data, to calculate the cross sections for populating specific excited states of the caesium nuclei produced by neutrino capture on $^{131}$Xe and $^{136}$Xe. The shell model is further used to compute the decay schemes of the low-lying $1^{+}$ excited states of $^{136}$Cs, for which there is sparse experimental data. We explore the possibility of tagging the chara…
Hadronic decays of boosted resonances, e.g., top quark jets, at hadronic super colliders are frequent predictions in TeV-scale extensions of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. In such scenarios, accurate modeling of QCD radiation is necessary for trustworthy predictions. We present the automation of fully differential, next-to-leading-order (NLO) in QCD corrections with parton shower (PS) matching for an effective Left-Right Symmetric Model (LRSM) that features $W_R^\pm, Z_R$ gauge bosons and heavy Majorana neutrinos $N$. Publicly available universal model files require remarkably fewer u…
We calculate the nuclear matrix element for the two-neutrino $ββ$ decay of $^{136}$Xe into the first excited $0^+$ state of $^{136}$Ba. We use different many-body methods: the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) framework, the nuclear shell model, the interacting boson model (IBM-2), and an effective field theory (EFT) for $β$ and $ββ$ decays. While the QRPA suggests a decay rate at the edge of current experimental limits, the shell model points to a half-life about two orders of magnitude longer. The predictions of the IBM-2 and the EFT lie in between, and the latter provides syst…
We study in detail the contribution of heavy composite Majorana neutrinos to neutrino-less double beta decay. Our analysis confirms the result of a previous estimate by two of the authors. Excited neutrinos couple to the electroweak gauge bosons through a magnetic type effective Lagrangian. The relevant nuclear matrix element is related to matrix elements available in the literature and current bounds on the half-life of neutrino-less double beta decay are converted into bounds on the compositeness scale and/or the heavy neutrino mass. Our bounds are of the same order of magnitude as those ava…
The possibility to observe the neutrino-less double $ β$ decay and thus to prove the Majorana nature of neutrino as well as provide a sensitive measure of its mass is a major challenge of to-day's neutrino physics. As an attractive alternative we propose to study the inverse process, the radiative neutrino-less double electron capture $0 ν2EC$. The associated monoenergetic photon provides a convenient experimental signature. Other advantages include the favourable ratio of the $0 ν2EC$ to the competing $2ν2EC$ capture rates and, very importantly, the existence of coincidence trigger to suppres…
Neutrino oscillation experiments under neutrino pair beam from circulating excited heavy ions are studied. It is found that detection of double weak events has a good sensitivity to measure CP violating parameter and distinguish mass hierarchy patterns in short baseline experiments in which the earth-induced matter effect is minimized.
Electron capture can determine the electron neutrino mass, while the beta decay of Tritium measures the electron antineutrino mass and the neutrinoless double beta decay observes the Majorana neutrino mass. Electron capture e. g. on 163Ho plus bound electron to 163Dy* plus neutrino can determine the electron neutrino mass from the upper end of the decay spectrum of the excited Dy*, which is given by the Q-Value minus the neutrino mass. The Dy* states decay by X-ray and Auger electron emissions. The total decay energy is measured in a bolometer. These excitations have been studied by Robertson …
Composite-fermion models predict excited quarks and leptons with mass scales which can potentially be observed at high-energy colliders like the LHC; the most recent exclusion limits from the CMS and ATLAS Collaborations corner excited-fermion masses and the compositeness scale to the multi-TeV range. At the same time, hypothetical composite Majorana neutrinos would lead to observable effects in neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) experiments. In this work, we show that the current composite-neutrino exclusion limit $M_N>4.6$ TeV, as extracted from direct searches at the LHC, can indeed be…

The 51Cr neutrino source experiments play a unique role in testing overall operations of the GALLEX and SAGE solar neutrino experiments. Recently Hata and Haxton argued that the excited-state contribution to the 71Ga cross section for 51Cr neutrino absorption might not be known reliably, despite forward-angle (p,n) measurements. A large-basis shell model calculation reported here indicates that the unusual situation they envisioned - destructive interference between weak spin and strong spin-tensor amplitudes - does occur for the transition to the first excited state in 71Ge. The calculation p…
Measurement of parity violating magnetization is proposed as a means to determine neutrino properties such as Majorana/Dirac distinction and absolute neutrino masses. The process we use is radiative neutrino pair emission from a collective and coherent body of lanthanoid ions doped in host crystals. A vector-component of electron spin flip parallel to photon direction emitted from ion excited state generates this type of magnetization which is stored for a long time in crystals till spin relaxation time.
Background: Neutrinoless double beta decay, if observed, would reveal physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, namely it would prove that neutrinos are Majoran fermions and that the lepton number is not conserved. Purpose: The analysis of the results of neutrinoless double beta decay observations requires an accurate knowledge of several nuclear matrix elements (NME) for different mechanism that may contribute to the decay. We provide a complete analysis of these NME for the decay of the ground state (g.s.) of $^{48}$Ca to the g.s. $0^+_1$ and first excited $0^+_2$ state of …
Nuclear double $β$-decay with two neutrinos is a rare and important process for natural radioactivity of unstable nuclei. The experimental data of nuclear double $β^{-}$-decay with two neutrinos are analyzed and a systematic law to calculate the half-lives of this rare process is proposed. It is the first analytical and simple formula for double $β$-decay half-lives where the leading effect from both the Coulomb potential and nuclear structure is included. The systematic law shows that the logarithms of the half-lives are inversely proportional to the decay energies for the ground state transi…
The recently discovered 3.5 keV X-ray line from extragalactic sources may be evidence of dark matter scatterings or decays. We show that dark atoms can be the source of the emission, through their hyperfine transitions, which would be the analog of 21 cm radiation from a dark sector. We identify two families of dark atom models that match the X-ray observations and are consistent with other constraints. In the first, the hyperfine excited state is long-lived compared to the age of the universe, and the dark atom mass is relatively unconstrained; dark atoms could be strongly self-interacting in…
We show how leptogenesis can occur at the TeV scale with neutrinos that possess almost purely Dirac masses and negligible Majorana mass contributions as a consequence of the small wavefunction overlap in a warped fifth dimension. Lepton number violation at the Planck scale is introduced via a Majorana mass term on the Planck brane. Such a Majorana mass operator leads to the small mass splitting of otherwise degenerate Kaluza-Klein excited states on the TeV brane. This tiny mass splitting can compensate for the small Yukawa couplings to give a CP asymmetry large enough to produce the sufficient…
New light, weakly coupled particles can be efficiently produced at existing and future high-intensity accelerators and radioactive sources in deep underground laboratories. Once produced, these particles can scatter or decay in large neutrino detectors (e.g Super-K and Borexino) housed in the same facilities. We discuss the production of weakly coupled scalars $ϕ$ via nuclear de-excitation of an excited element into the ground state in two viable concrete reactions: the decay of the $0^+$ excited state of $^{16}$O populated via a $(p,α)$ reaction on fluorine and from radioactive $^{144}$Ce dec…
We investigate weak nuclear decays with extremely small kinetic energy release (Q value) and thus extremely good sensitivity to the absolute neutrino mass scale. In particular, we consider decays into excited daughter states, and we show that partial ionization of the parent atom can help to tune Q values to << 1 keV. We discuss several candidate isotopes undergoing beta+, beta-, bound state beta, or electron capture decay, and come to the conclusion that a neutrino mass measurement using low-Q decays might only be feasible if no ionization is required, and if future improvements in isotope pr…
