We study the effect of intrinsic fluctuations of the proton saturation momentum scale on event-by-event rapidity distributions. Saturation scale fluctuations generate an asymmetry in the single particle rapidity distribution in each event resulting in genuine n-particle correlations having a component linear in the rapidities of the produced particles, $y_1\cdots y_n$. We introduce a color domain model that naturally explains the centrality dependence of the two-particle rapidity correlations recently measured by ATLAS while constraining the probability distribution of saturation scale fluctuations in the proton. Predictions for n = 4, 6 and 8 particle correlations find that the four and eight-particle cumulant change sign at an intermediate multiplicity, a signature which could be tested experimentally.
We modified the gluon saturation model by rescaling the momentum fraction according to saturation momentum and introduced the Cooper-Frye hydrodynamic evolution to systematically study the pseudo-rapidity distributions of final charged hadrons at different energies and different centralities for Au-Au collisions in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The features of both gluon saturation and hydrodynamic evolution at different energies and different centralities for Au-Au collisions are investigated in this paper.
Saturation models -- colour glass condensate and string percolation -- impose a strict relation between the average transverse momentum, <P_T>, and the rapidity particle densities, dn/dy. By combining this relation with an appropriate evolution equation for dn/dy, and imposing energy-momentum conservation, we obtain a fair description of data, for generic AB collisions (hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus) at all rapidities and (high) energies. Predictions are given for the LHC.
A new geometrical scaling method with gluon saturation rapidity limit is proposed to study the gluon saturation feature of the central rapidity region of relativistic nuclear collisions. The net-baryon number is essentially transported by valence quarks that probe the saturation regime in the target by multiple scattering. We take advantage of the gluon saturation model with geometric scaling of the rapidity limit to investigate the net baryon distributions, nuclear stopping power and gluon saturation features in the SPS and RHIC energy regions. Predictions for net-baryon rapidity distribution…
We show that the Dual String Model with fusion leads, in heavy ion collisions, to strict saturation of the particle (pseudo-)rapidity density, normalised to the number of participant nucleons, as that number increases. Asymptotically, as the centre-of-mass energy goes to infinity with the number of participants fixed, this density approaches the nucleon-nucleon density. A comparison with recent WA98 data is presented.
Intrinsic fluctuations of the proton saturation momentum generate asymmetric rapidity distributions on an event-by-event basis. We argue that the asymmetric component, $\left<a_1^2\right>$, of the orthogonal polynomial decomposition of the two-particle rapidity correlation function is a sensitive probe to this distribution of fluctuations. We present a simple model connecting the experimentally measured $\left<a_1^2\right>$ to the variance, $σ$, of the distribution of the logarithm of the proton saturation scale. We find that $σ\approx 0. 5-1$ describes the asymmetric component of the rapidity…
The contribution of the different terms of the running-coupling Balistky-Kovchegov (rcBK) equation to the description of inclusive HERA data is discussed. Within this framework an alternative definition of the saturation scale is presented. The definition is based on the ratio of the term corresponding to the recombination of two dipoles to the term corresponding to a dipole splitting. A similar ratio is used to study the contribution of the recombination term to the evolution of inclusive HERA data with rapidity. It is found that, although the data are well described, the behaviour of the dif…
The solutions of the Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution equations are studied numerically and compared with known analytical estimations. The rapidity and nuclear size dependences of the saturation scale are obtained for the cases of fixed and running coupling constant. These same dependences are studied in experimental data, on lepton-nucleus, deuteron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, through geometric scaling and compared with the theoretical calculations.
In this paper we continue our program to build a model for high energy soft interactions, that is based on the CGC/saturation approach. The main result of this paper is that we have discovered a mechanism that leads to large long range rapidity correlations, and results in large values of the correlation function $R\Lb y_1,y_2\Rb \,\geq \,1$, which is independent of $y_1$ and $ y_2$. Such behaviour of the correlation function, provides strong support for the idea, that at high energies the system of partons that is produced, is not only dense, but also has strong attractive forces acting betwee…
In the framework of the recently proposed saturation picture, we examine in a systematic way whether the nuclear modification factor measured for d-Au collisions at RHIC may be simply explained. The Cronin peak which is obtained at mid-rapidity around $k_{\bot}\simeq 3$ GeV may be reproduced at the proper height only by boosting the saturation momentum by an additional nuclear component as already shown in the literature. In this respect, mid-rapidity RHIC data cannot necessarily be seen as a probe of the saturation picture. The large rapidity ($η\simeq 3$) region allows us to test the shape o…
We compute the rapidity dependence of particle and transverse energy production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at various beam energies and atomic numbers using the perturbative QCD + saturation model. The distribution is a broad gaussian near $y=0$ but the rapid increase of particle production with the beam energy will via energy conservation strongly constrain the rapidity distribution at large $y$.
We argue that large fluctuations in the saturation momentum are necessary to explain the ATLAS and ALICE data on pA collisions measured at the LHC. Using a form for the distribution of fluctuations motivated by theoretical studies of the non-linear evolution equations for the Color Glass Condensate, we find a remarkably good agreement between theory and the measured distributions. If the saturation momentum fluctuates, we argue that the cross section for a proton probe should also fluctuate, consistent with previous observations. Finally we discuss these results and their possible consistency …
It is observed that K-/pi in A+A and possibly p+p and pbar+p collisions follows an interesting systematic in omega, the pion transverse energy per unit of rapidity and transverse overlap area. The systematics show a linear increase of K-/pi with omega in the AGS and SPS energy regime and a saturation at RHIC energy. The systematics indicate that omega might be the relevant variable underlying K-/pi. At high energy, the omega variable is related to the gluon saturation scale in high density QCD, and perhaps to the initial energy density in the Bjorken picture.
We investigate baryon transport in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at energies reached at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron, BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC), and CERN LHC in the model of saturation. An analytical scaling law is derived within the color glass condensate framework based on small-coupling QCD. Transverse momentum spectra, net-baryon rapidity distributions and their energy, mass and centrality dependences are well described. In a comparison with RHIC data in Au + Au collisions at sqrt (s_NN) = 62.4 GeV and 200 GeV, the gradual approach to the gluon saturation regime i…
In this paper we discuss the example of one rapidity gap process: the inclusive cross sections of the leading neutrons in deep inelastic scattering with protons (DIS). The equations for this process are proposed and solved, giving the example of theoretical calculation of the survival probability for one rapidity gap processes. It turns out that the value of the survival probability is small and it decreases with energy
We discuss the general mechanism leading to long-range rapidity and angular correlations produced in high energy collisions (the "ridge"). This effect naturally appears in the high energy QCD and is strongly sensitive to physics of the gluon saturation. We comment on various recent practical realizations of the main idea, paying special attention to $N_c$ counting and stress the relevance of Pomeron loops.
In the framework of Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory (EFT), we calculate two-gluon rapidity correlations in the leading and sub-leading orders of $p_\perp/Q_s$. In the leading order, both short- and long-range rapidity correlations are enhanced. In contrast, the contribution of sub-leading order is mainly short range quantum correlations. It is much smaller than that of the leading one, but is not negligible. Transverse momentum dependence of rapidity correlation shows that the leading order is sensitive to the saturation momentum of two incident particles, but the sub-leadi…
We calculate the genuine long-range multi-particle rapidity correlation functions, $C_{n}(y_1,...,y_n)$ for $n=3,4,5,6$, originating from fluctuations of the fireball longitudinal shape. In these correlation functions any contribution from the short-range two-particle correlations, and in general up to $(n-1)$-particle in $C_n$, is suppressed. The information about the fluctuating fireball shape in rapidity is encoded in the cumulants of coefficients of the orthogonal polynomial expansion of particle distributions in rapidity.
The production of $c\bar{c}c\bar{c}$, $b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}b\bar{b}$ pairs considering double parton scattering at LHC energies is investigated. We estimate the contribution of saturation effects to the different final states and predict the energy dependence of the cross sections. Moreover, we estimate the ratio between the double and single parton scattering cross sections for the full rapidity range of the LHC and for the rapidity range of the LHCb experiment. For the full rapidity range we confirm a previous prediction, namely that for charm production the double parton scatteri…
We consider the implications of the Color Glass Condensate for the central region of p+A collisions. We compute the k_t distribution of radiated gluons and their rapidity distribution dN/dy analytically, both in the perturbative regime and in the region between the two saturation momenta. We find an analytic expression for the number of produced gluons which is valid when the saturation momentum of the proton is much less than that of the nucleus. We discuss the scaling of the produced multiplicity with A. We show that the slope of the rapidity density dN/dy provides an experimental measure fo…
We investigate the effect of hydrodynamic fluctuations on the rapidity decorrelations of anisotropic flow in high-energy nuclear collisions using a (3+1)-dimensional integrated dynamical model. The integrated dynamical model consists of twisted initial conditions, fluctuating hydrodynamics, and hadronic cascades on an event-by-event basis. To understand the rapidity decorrelation, we analyze the factorization ratio in the longitudinal direction. Comparing the factorization ratios between fluctuating hydrodynamics and ordinary viscous hydrodynamics, we find a sizable effect of hydrodynamic fluc…
Viscous diffusion can broaden the rapidity dependence of two-particle transverse momentum fluctuations. Surprisingly, measurements at RHIC by the STAR collaboration demonstrate that this broadening is accompanied by the appearance of unanticipated structure in the rapidity distribution of these fluctuations in the most central collisions. Although a first order classical Navier-Stokes theory can roughly explain the rapidity broadening, it cannot explain the additional structure. We propose that the rapidity structure can be explained using the second order causal Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics w…
We consider a novel mechanism for J/Psi production in nuclear collisions arising due to the high density of gluons. We calculate the resulting J/Psi production cross section as a function of rapidity and centrality. We evaluate the nuclear modification factor and show that the rapidity distribution of the produced J/Psi's is significantly more narrow in AA collisions due to the gluon saturation effects. Our results indicate that gluon saturation in the colliding nuclei is a significant source of J/Psi suppression that can be disentangled from the quark-gluon plasma effects.
We analyze the Drell-Yan lepton pair production at forward rapidity at the Large Hadron Collider. Using the dipole framework for the computation of the cross section we find a significant suppression in comparison to the collinear factorization formula due to saturation effects in the dipole cross section. We develop a twist expansion in powers of Q_s^2/M^2 where Q_s is the saturation scale and M the invariant mass of the produced lepton pair. For the nominal LHC energy the leading twist description is sufficient down to masses of 6 GeV. Below that value the higher twist terms give a significa…
In this paper we calculate the contribution to rapidity and angular correlations of the first Pomeron loop diagram in the dense partonic environment. This diagram is expected to give the largest contribution to the density variation mechanism of the angular correlations. We show that this diagrams leads to sizable contributions to the rapidity correlation functions of the order of $σ_{in} /\Lb πR^2\Rb$ where $σ_{in}$ is the inelastic cross section and $R$ is the size of the typical dipole inside the proton saturation scale. Therefore, the correlations do not depend on the saturation scale. We …
We show that in proton-lead (p+Pb) collisions at the LHC, the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) and hydrodynamics lead to qualitatively different behavior of the average transverse momentum, <p_T>, with the particles rapidity. In hydrodynamics, the <p_T> decreases as one goes from zero rapidity, y=0, to the proton fragmentation region since the number of particles decreases. In contrast, in the CGC the saturation momentum increases as one goes from y=0 to the proton fragmentation region, and so the <p_T> increases. At the LHC, the difference between the two models may be large enough to be tested e…
We consider the influence of parton saturation in the Color Glass Condensate on the back-to-back azimuthal correlations of high $p_T$ hadrons in $pA$ (or $dA$) collisions. When both near--side and away--side hadrons are detected at mid-rapidity at RHIC energy, the effects of parton saturation are constrained to transverse momenta below the saturation scale $p_T \leq Q_s$; in this case the back-to-back correlations do not disappear but exhibit broadening. However when near-side and away-side hadrons are separated by several units of rapidity, quantum evolution effects lead to the depletion of b…
We study the effect of thermal blurring caused by the use of (momentum-space) rapidity as a proxy of coordinate-space rapidity in experimental measurements of conserved charge fluctuations in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In theoretical studies assuming statistical mechanics, calculated fluctuations are those in a spatial volume. Experiments, on the other hand, can measure fluctuations only in a momentum-space in the final state. In a standard argument to compare experimental results for a momentum space with theoretical studies for a coordinate space, rapidities of particles are implicit…
The physics of the initial conditions of heavy ion collisions is dominated by the nonlinear gluonic interactions of QCD. These lead to the concepts of parton saturation and the Color Glass Condensate (CGC). We discuss recent progress in calculating multi-gluon correlations in this framework, prompted by the observation that these correlations are in fact easier to compute in a dense system (nucleus-nucleus) than a dilute one (proton-proton).
We study the effects of including a running coupling constant in high-density QCD evolution. For fixed coupling constant, QCD evolution preserves the initial dependence of the saturation momentum $Q_s$ on the nuclear size $A$ and results in an exponential dependence on rapidity $Y$, $Q^2_s(Y) = Q^2_s(Y_0) \exp{[ \barα_s d (Y-Y_0) ]}$. For the running coupling case, we re-derive analytical estimates for the $A$- and $Y$-dependences of the saturation scale and test them numerically. The $A$-dependence of $Q_s$ vanishes $\propto 1/ \sqrt{Y}$ for large $A$ and $Y$. The $Y$-dependence is reduced to…
We have addressed the question of whether saturation (CGC) has been observed in deuteron-gold collisions at RHIC. We have made a detailed analysis of the Cronin peak characteristic of the nuclear modification factor measured for d-Au collisions at mid-rapidity. The Cronin peak which is obtained around $p_t\simeq 3$ GeV may be reproduced at the proper height only by boosting the saturation momentum by a huge non-perturbative additional component. At forward rapidity, we get a quantitative agreement with data, reproducing hadron production spectra and the $R_{CP}$ ratio using a recently develope…
We calculate azimuthal correlations in dAu collisions at different rapidities and centralities and argue that experimentally observed depletion of the back-to-back pick can be quantitatively explained by gluon saturation in the Color Glass Condensate of the Gold nucleus.
We discuss rapidity decorrelation caused by hydrodynamic fluctuations in high-energy nuclear collisions at the LHC energy. We employ an integrated dynamical model which is a combination of the Monte Carlo version of Glauber model with extension to longitudinal direction for initial conditions, full three-dimensional relativistic fluctuating hydrodynamics for the space-time evolution of created matter in the intermediate stage and a hadronic cascade model in the late stage. We switch on and off the hydrodynamic fluctuations in the hydrodynamic stage to understand the effects of hydrodynamic flu…
An "event-shape twist" technique is proposed to study the longitudinal dynamics of harmonic flow, in particular the effects of rapidity fluctuation and event-plane decorrelation. This technique can distinguish between two types of rapidity decorrelation effects: a systematic rotation versus a random fluctuation of flow angles along the rapidity direction. The technique is demonstrated and the magnitude of the two decorrelation effects is predicted using the AMPT model via a single particle analysis and two-particle correlation analysis. An observed decorrelation can be attributed to a systemat…
We analytically solve the full next-to-leading logarithmic Balitsky-Kovchegov equation in the saturation regime, which includes corrections from quark and gluon loops, and large double transverse logarithms. The analytic result for the $S$-matrix in the saturation regime shows that the linear rapidity decrease with rapidity of the exponent in running coupling case is replaced by rapidity raised to power of 3/2 decreasing. The collinearly-improved Balitsky-Kovchegov equation are also analytically solved in the saturation regime. It shows that the double collinear logarithms do not contribute to…
RHIC experiments have recently measured the azimuthal correlation function of forward di-hadrons. The data show a disappearance of the away-side peak in central d+Au collisions, compared to p+p collisions, as was predicted by saturation physics. Indeed, we argue that this effect, absent at mid-rapidity, is a consequence of the small-x evolution into the saturation regime of the Gold nucleus wave function. We show that the data are well described in the Color Glass Condensate framework.
Collective flow in collisions between Lead nuclei at LHC are influenced by random initial state fluctuations, especially for odd harmonics. Here we extend fluctuation studies to longitudinal fluctuations, which may have significant effect on the rapidity distribution of odd harmonics. Furthermore center of mass rapidity fluctuations are measurable, but not yet analysed. Here in the PACIAE parton and hadron molecular dynamics model we make an analysis of initial state fluctuations. As previous analyses discussed mainly the effects of fluctuations on eccentricity and the elliptic flow we pay par…
We make quantitative predictions for the rapidity and centrality dependencies of hadron multiplicities in dA collisions at RHIC basing on the ideas of parton saturation in the Color Glass Condensate.
We discuss azimuthal correlations in $dAu$ collisions at different rapidities and centralities and argue that experimentally observed depletion of the back-to-back peak can be quantitatively explained by gluon saturation in the Color Glass Condensate of the Gold nucleus.
Gluon distributions of colliding hadrons saturate as a result of the non-linear evolution equations of QCD. As a consequence there exists the so called saturation momentum, which is related to the gluon density per unit rapidity per transverse area. When saturation momentum is the only scale for physical processes, different observables exhibit geometrical scaling (GS). We show a number of examples of GS and its violation in different reactions.
In this paper, using the Higgs production in forward rapidity region in proton-nucleus collisions as an example, we demonstrate that we can construct a systematic formalism for the threshold resummation for forward rapidity particle productions in the saturation formalism. The forward threshold jet function, which satisfies the corresponding renormalization group equation, is introduced into the new factorization formula. This calculation can be easily generalized to other processes, such as single forward hadron productions at forward rapidity region, and have important phenomenological impli…
The decorrelation of the orientation of the event-plane angles in the initial state of relativistic Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions, the "torque effect," is studied in a model of entropy deposition in the longitudinal direction involving fluctuations of the longitudinal source profile on large scales. The radiation from a single wounded nucleon is asymmetric in space-time rapidity. It is assumed that the extent in rapidity of the region of deposited entropy is random. Fluctuations in the deposition of entropy from each source increase the event-plane decorrelation: for Pb-Pb collisions they improve …
We suggest to use net-baryon rapidity distributions in central relativistic heavy-ion collisions at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies in order to probe saturation physics. Within the color glass condensate framework based on small-coupling QCD, net-baryon rapidity distributions are shown to exhibit geometric scaling. In a comparison with RHIC data in Au + Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 62.4 GeV and 200 GeV the gradual approach to the gluon saturation regime is investigated. Predictions for net-baryon rapidity spectra and the mean rapidity loss in central Pb + Pb collisions at LHC energies of sqrt (s_N…
We show that instanton calculations in QCD become theoretically well defined in the gluon saturation environment which suppresses large size instantons. The effective cutoff scale is determined by the inverse of the saturation scale. We concentrate on two most important cases: the small-x tail of a gluon distribution of a high energy hadron or a large nucleus and the central rapidity region in a high energy hadronic or heavy ion collision. In the saturation regime the gluon density in a single large ultrarelativistic nucleus is high and gluonic fields are given by the classical solutions of th…

The azimuthal collimation of di-hadrons with large rapidity separations in high multiplicity p+p collisions at the LHC is described in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective theory [1] by N_c^2 suppressed multi-ladder QCD diagrams that are enhanced α_S^(-8) due to gluon saturation in hadron wavefunctions. We show that quantitative computations in the CGC framework are in good agreement with data from the CMS experiment on per trigger di-hadron yields and predict further systematics of these yields with varying trigger pT and charged hadron multiplicity. Radial flow generated by re-scatteri…
We show that fluctuations of the fireball shape in the longitudinal direction generate nontrivial rapidity correlations that depend not only on the rapidity difference, y_{1} - y_{2}, but also on the rapidity sum, y_{1} + y_{2}. This is explicitly demonstrated in a simple wounded nucleon model, and the general case is also discussed. We show how to extract different components of the fluctuating fireball shape from the measured two-particle rapidity correlation function. The experimental possibility of studying the longitudinal initial conditions in heavy-ion and proton-proton collisions is em…
We consider modifications of the standard non-linear QCD evolution in an attempt to account for some of the missing ingredients discussed recently, such as correlations, discreteness in gluon emission and Pomeron loops. The evolution is numerically performed using the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation on individual configurations defined by a given initial value of the saturation scale, for reduced rapidities $y=(α_s N_c/π) Y<10$. We consider the effects of averaging over configurations as a way to implement correlations, using three types of Gaussian averaging around a mean saturation scale. Furthe…
We study two-particle long-range rapidity correlations arising in the early stages of heavy ion collisions in the saturation/Color Glass Condensate framework, assuming for simplicity that one colliding nucleus is much larger than the other. We calculate the two-gluon production cross section while including all-order saturation effects in the heavy nucleus with the lowest-order rescattering in the lighter nucleus. We find four types of correlations in the two-gluon production cross section: (i) geometric correlations, (ii) HBT correlations accompanied by a back-to-back maximum, (iii) away-side…
Recent data of the HADES Collaboration in Au+Au central collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.4$ GeV indicate large proton number fluctuations inside one unit of rapidity around midrapidity. This can be a signature of critical phenomena due to the strong attractive interactions between baryons. We study an alternative hypothesis that these large fluctuations are caused by the event-by-event fluctuations of the number of bare protons, and no interactions between these protons are assumed. The proton number fluctuations in five symmetric rapidity intervals $Δy$ inside the region $ΔY=1$ are calculat…
We demonstrate the QCD factorization for inclusive hadron production in $pA$ collisions in the saturation formalism at one-loop order, with explicit calculation of both real and virtual gluon radiation diagrams. The collinear divergences associated with the incoming parton distribution of the nucleon and the outgoing fragmentation function of the final state hadron, as well as the rapidity divergence with small-$x$ dipole gluon distribution of the nucleus are factorized into the splittings of the associated parton distribution and fragmentation functions and the energy evolution of the dipole …
Experimental results of the rapidity spectra of protons and net-protons (protons minus antiprotons) emitted in gold-gold (Au-Au) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions, measured by a few collaborations at the alternating gradient synchrotron (AGS), super proton synchrotron (SPS), and relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC), are described by a three-source distribution. The values of the distribution width $σ_C$ and contribution ratio (relative contribution) $k_C$ of the central rapidity region, and the distribution width $σ_F$ and rapidity shift $Δy$ of the forward/backward rapidity regions, are then…
We demonstrate that rapidity separated di-hadron spectra in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions at the LHC can be quantitatively described by a combination of BFKL and saturation dynamics. Based on these results, we predict the systematics of di-hadron spectra in proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC.
The Balitsky-Kovchegov QCD equation for rapidity evolution describing saturation effects at high energy admits universal asymptotic traveling-wave solutions when the nonlinear damping becomes effective. The asymptotic solutions fall in universality classes depending only on some specific properties of the solution of the associated linear equation. We derive these solutions for the recent QCD formulations of the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with running coupling constant obtained from quark-loop calculation. While the associated linear solutions depend in different ways with observables and hig…
Starting with the interpretation of parton evolution with rapidity as a branching-diffusion process, we describe the different kinds of fluctuations of the density of partons which affect the properties of QCD scattering amplitudes at moderately high energies. We then derive some of these properties as direct consequences of the stochastic picture. We get new results on the expression of the saturation scale of a large nucleus, and a modified geometric scaling valid at intermediate rapidities for dipole-dipole scattering.
We discuss Drell-Yan production of dileptons at high energies in forward rapidity region in a hybrid high-energy approach. This approach uses unintegrated gluon distributions in one proton and collinear quark/antiquark distributions in the second proton. Corresponding momentum-space formula for the differential cross sections in high-energy approximation has been derived. The relation to the commonly used dipole approach is discussed. We conclude and illustrate that some results of the dipole approaches are too approximate, as far as kinemtics is considered, and in fact cannot be used for real…
