The ability to create dynamic deformations of micron-sized structures is relevant to a wide variety of applications such as adaptable optics, soft robotics, and reconfigurable microfluidic devices. In this work we examine non-uniform lubrication flow as a mechanism to create complex deformation fields in an elastic plate. We consider a Kirchoff-Love elasticity model for the plate and Hele-Shaw flow in a narrow gap between the plate and a parallel rigid surface. Based on linearization of the Reynolds equation, we obtain a governing equation which relates elastic deformations to gradients in non-homogenous physical properties of the fluid (e.g. body forces, viscosity, and slip velocity). We then focus on a specific case of non-uniform Helmholtz-Smoluchowski electroosmotic slip velocity, and provide a method for determining the zeta-potential distribution necessary to generate arbitrary static and quasi-static deformations of the elastic plate. Extending the problem to time-dependent solutions, we analyze transient effects on asymptotically static solutions, and finally provide a closed form solution for a Green's function for time periodic actuations.
We characterize the spatiotemporal deformation of an elastic film during the radial drainage of fluid from a narrowing gap. Elastic deformation of the film takes the form of a dimple and prevents full contact to be reached. With thinner elastic film the stress becomes increasingly supported by the underlying rigid substrate and the dimple formation is suppressed, which allows the surfaces to reach full contact. We highlight the lag due to viscoelasticity on the surface profiles, and that for a given fluid film thickness deformation leads to stronger hydrodynamic forces than for rigid surfaces.
Elastohydrodynamic lubrication, or simply soft lubrication, refers to the motion of deformable objects near a boundary lubricated by a fluid, and is one of the key physical mechanisms to minimise friction and wear in natural and engineered systems. Hence it is of particular interest to relate the thickness of the lubricant layer to the entrainment (sliding/rolling) velocity, the mechanical loading exerted onto the contacting elements, and properties of the elastic boundary. In this work we provide an overview of the various regimes of soft lubrication for two-dimensional cylinders in lubricate…
This work proposes a novel model and numerical formulation for lubricated contact problems describing the mutual interaction between two deformable 3D solid bodies and an interposed fluid film. The solid bodies are consistently described based on nonlinear continuum mechanics allowing for finite deformations and arbitrary constitutive laws. The fluid film is modelled as a quasi-2D flow problem on the interface between the solids governed by the averaged Reynolds equation. The averaged Reynolds equation accounts for surface roughness utilizing spatially homogenized, effective fluid parameters a…
We derive analytical expressions for the flow of Newtonian and power law fluids in elastic circularly-symmetric tubes based on a lubrication approximation where the flow velocity profile at each cross section is assumed to have its axially-dependent characteristic shape for the given rheology and cross sectional size. Two pressure-area constitutive elastic relations for the tube elastic response are used in these derivations. We demonstrate the validity of the derived equations by observing qualitatively correct trends in general and quantitatively valid asymptotic convergence to limiting case…
Deformation-induced lateral migration of a bubble slowly rising near a vertical plane wall in a stagnant liquid is numerically and theoretically investigated. In particular, our focus is set on a situation with a short clearance $c$ between the bubble interface and the wall. Motivated by the fact that numerically and experimentally measured migration velocities are considerably higher than the velocity estimated by the available analytical solution using the Faxén mirror image technique for $a/(a+c)\ll 1$ (here $a$ is the bubble radius), when the clearance parameter $\varepsilon(= c/a)$ is com…
Relative motion between soft wet solids arises in a number of applications in natural and artificial settings, and invariably couples elastic deformation and fluid flow. We explore this in a minimal setting by considering a fluid-immersed negatively-buoyant cylinder moving along a soft inclined wall. Our experiments show that there is an emergent robust steady-state sliding regime of the cylinder with an effective friction that is significantly reduced relative to that of rigid fluid-lubricated contacts. A simple scaling approach that couples the cylinder-induced flow to substrate deformation …
We study the transient dynamics of a viscous liquid contained in a narrow gap between a rigid surface and a parallel elastic plate. The elastic plate is deformed due to an externally applied time-varying pressure-field. We model the flow-field via the lubrication approximation, and the plate deformation by the Kirchhoff-Love plate theory. We obtain a self-similarity solution for the case of an external point force acting on the elastic plate. The pressure and deformation field during and after the application of the external force are derived and presented by closed form expressions. We examin…
We use a method based on the lubrication approximation in conjunction with a residual-based mass-continuity iterative solution scheme to compute the flow rate and pressure field in distensible converging-diverging tubes for Navier-Stokes fluids. We employ an analytical formula derived from a one-dimensional version of the Navier-Stokes equations to describe the underlying flow model that provides the residual function. This formula correlates the flow rate to the boundary pressures in straight cylindrical elastic tubes with constant-radius. We validate our findings by the convergence toward a …
In this paper, we obtain analytical results for shear stress distributions inside an elastic body placed in a low Reynolds number transport. The problem definition is inspired by a recent experimental study (Valiei et al., Lab Chip, 2012, 12, 5133-5137) that reports the flow-triggered deformation of bacterial biofilms, formed on cylindrical rigid microposts, into long filamentous structures known as streamers. In our analysis, we consider an elastic body of finite thickness (forming a rim) placed over a rigid cylinder, i.e., we mimic the biofilm structure in the experiment. We consider Oseen f…
Elastic deformation due to embedded fluidic networks is currently studied in the context of soft-actuators and soft-robotic applications. In this work, we analyze interaction between the elastic deflection of a slender beam and viscous flow within a long serpentine channel, embedded in the elastic beam. The channel is positioned asymmetrically with regard to the midplane of the beam, and thus pressure within the channel creates a local moment deforming the beam. We focus on creeping flows and small deflections of the elastic beam and obtain, in leading order, a fourth-order partial integro-dif…
A sessile liquid drop can deform the substrate on which it rests if the solid is sufficiently "soft". In this paper we compute the detailed spatial structure of the capillary forces exerted by the drop on the solid substrate using a model based on Density Functional Theory. We show that, in addition to the normal forces, the drop exerts a previously unaccounted tangential force. The resultant effect on the solid is a pulling force near the contact line directed towards the interior of the drop, i.e. not along the interface. The resulting elastic deformations of the solid are worked out and ill…
We study fluid-structure interactions (FSIs) in a long and shallow microchannel, conveying a non-Newtonian fluid, at steady state. The microchannel has a linearly elastic and compliant top wall, while its three other walls are rigid. The fluid flowing inside the microchannel has a shear-dependent viscosity described by the power-law rheological model. We employ lubrication theory to solve for the flow problem inside the long and shallow microchannel. For the structural problem, we employ two plate theories, namely Kirchhoff-Love theory of thin plates and Reissner-Mindlin first-order shear defo…
We investigate the transient, fluid structure interaction (FSI) of a non-Newtonian fluid peeling two linearly elastic sheets at low Reynolds numbers. Two different non-Newtonian fluids are considered; a simplified sPTT model, and an inelastic fluid with shear thinning viscosity (generalized Newtonian fluid). In the limit of small gap between the sheets, we invoke a lubrication approximation and numerically solve for the gap height between the two sheets during the start-up of a pressure-controlled flow. What we observe is that for an impulse pressure applied to the sheet inlet, the peeling fro…
Slender tubes constituted of hyperelastic materials undergoing large deformations and conveying inertialess flow of Newtonian fluids at steady state are a model representations of complex systems in both biomechanics and bio-inspired technology. In this paper, we undertake a systematic study of this system. The tube's hyperelastic behavior is modeled by five (5) different constitutive laws: neo Hookean, Mooney Rivlin, Fung, Gent and Ogden. Invoking the principles of finite elasticity, we delineate the local pressure - deformation relationship for the tube for each of the hyperelastic models. T…
Swimming at low Reynolds number in Newtonian fluids is only possible through non-reciprocal body deformations due to the kinematic reversibility of the Stokes equations. We consider here a model swimmer consisting of two linked spheres, wherein one sphere is rigid and the other an incompressible neo-Hookean solid. The two spheres are connected by a rod which changes its length periodically. We show that the deformations of the body are non-reciprocal despite the reversible actuation and hence, the elastic two-sphere swimmer propels forward. Our results indicate that even weak elastic deformati…
The Synchronized Molecular-Dynamics simulation which was recently proposed by authors [Phys. Rev. X {\bf 4}, 041011 (2014)] is applied to the analysis of polymer lubrication between parallel plates. The rheological properties, conformational change of polymer chains, and temperature rise due to the viscous heating are investigated with changing the values of thermal conductivity of the polymeric liquid. It is found that at a small applied shear stress on the plate, the temperature of polymeric liquid only slightly increases in inverse proportion to the thermal conductivity and the apparent vis…
Laminar flow in devices fabricated from soft materials causes deformation of the passage geometry, which affects the flow rate--pressure drop relation. For a given pressure drop, in channels with narrow rectangular cross-section, the flow rate varies as the cube of the channel height, so deformation can produce significant quantitative effects, including nonlinear dependence on the pressure drop [{Gervais, T., El-Ali, J., Günther, A. \& Jensen, K.\ F.}\ 2006 Flow-induced deformation of shallow microfluidic channels.\ \textit{Lab Chip} \textbf{6}, 500--507]. Gervais et. al. proposed a successfu…
We develop a one-dimensional model for the unsteady fluid--structure interaction (FSI) between a soft-walled microchannel and viscous fluid flow within it. A beam equation, which accounts for both transverse bending rigidity and nonlinear axial tension, is coupled to a one-dimensional fluid model obtained from depth-averaging the two-dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations across the channel height. Specifically, the Navier--Stokes equations are scaled in the viscous lubrication limit relevant to microfluidics. The resulting set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations i…
Young's classic analysis of the equilibrium of a three-phase contact line ignores the out-of-plane component of the liquid-vapor surface tension. While it has long been appreciated that this unresolved force must be balanced by elastic deformation of the solid substrate, a definitive analysis has remained elusive because conventional idealizations of the substrate imply a divergence of stress at the contact line. While a number of theories of have been presented to cut off the divergence, none of them have provided reasonable agreement with experimental data. We measure surface and bulk deform…
The axisymmetric electrohydrodynamic deformation of an elastic capsule with capacitive membrane obeying Skalak law under uniform AC electric field is investigated using analytical and boundary integral theory. The low capillary number (the ratio of destabilizing shear or electric force to the stabilizing elastic force) regime shows time-averaged prolate and oblate spheroid deformations, and the time-periodic prolate-sphere, oblate-sphere breathing modes are commensurate with the time averaged-deformation. A novel prolate-oblate breathing mode is observed due to an interplay of finite membrane …
We study the motion of a solid particle immersed in a Newtonian fluid and confined between two parallel elastic membranes possessing shear and bending rigidity. The hydrodynamic mobility depends on the frequency of the particle motion due to the elastic energy stored in the membrane. Unlike the single-membrane case, a coupling between shearing and bending exists. The commonly used approximation of superposing two single-membrane contributions is found to give reasonable results only for motions in the parallel, but not in the perpendicular direction. We also compute analytically the membrane d…
The dynamics of drop impact on solid surfaces can be changed significantly by tuning the elasticity of the solid. Most prominently, the substrate deformation causes an increase in the splashing threshold as compared to impact onto perfectly rigid surfaces, and can thus lead to splash suppression. Here, we experimentally determine the splashing threshold for impact on thin membranes as a function of the tension in the membrane and its elastic properties. The drop dynamics is correlated to the membrane deformation, which is simultaneously measured using a laser profilometry technique. The experi…
The dynamics of a spherical elastic capsule, containing a Newtonian fluid bounded by an elastic membrane and immersed in another Newtonian fluid, in a uniform DC electric field is investigated. Discontinuity of electrical properties such as conductivities of the internal and external fluid media as well as capacitance and conductance of the membrane lead to a net interfacial Maxwell stress which can cause the deformation of such an elastic capsule. We investigate this problem considering well established membrane laws for a thin elastic membrane, with fully resolved hydrodynamics in the Stokes…
We present a new system based on alginate gels for the encapsulation of a ferrofluid drop, which allows us to create millimeter-sized elastic capsules that are highly deformable by inhomogeneous magnetic fields. We use a combination of experimental and theoretical work in order to characterize and quantify the deformation behavior of these ferrofluid-filled capsules. We introduce a novel method for the direct encapsulation of unpolar liquids by sodium alginate. The addition of polar alcohol molecules allows us to encapsulate a ferrofluid as a single phase. This encapsulation method increases t…
