The general and practical inversion of diffraction data-producing a computer model correctly representing the material explored - is an important unsolved problem for disordered materials. Such modeling should proceed by using our full knowledge base, both from experiment and theory. In this paper, we describe a robust method to jointly exploit the power of ab initio atomistic simulation along with the information carried by diffraction data. The method is applied to two very different systems: amorphous silicon and two compositions of a solid electrolyte memory material silver-doped GeSe3 . The technique is easy to implement, is faster and yields results much improved over conventional simulation methods for the materials explored. By direct calculation, we show that the method works for both poor and excellent glass forming materials. It offers a means to add a priori information in first principles modeling of materials, and represents a significant step toward the computational design of non-crystalline materials using accurate interatomic interactions and experimental information.
We apply a new method "force enhanced atomic refinement" (FEAR) to create a computer model of amorphous silicon (a-Si), based upon the highly precise X-ray diffraction experiments of Laaziri et al. The logic underlying our calculation is to estimate the structure of a real sample a-Si using experimental data and chemical information included in a non-biased way, starting from random coordinates. The model is in close agreement with experiment and also sits at a suitable minimum energy according to density functional calculations. In agreement with experiments, we find a small concentration of …
An exact analytical expression for the static structure factor $S(k)$ in disordered materials is derived from Fourier transformed neighbor distribution decompositions in real space, and permits to reconstruct the function $S(k)$ in an iterative fashion. The result is successfully compared to experimental data of archetypal glasses or amorphous materials (GeS$_2$, As$_2$Se$_3$, GeTe), and links quantitatively knowledge of structural information on short and intermediate -range order with the motifs found on the diffraction patterns in reciprocal space. The approach furthermore reveals that only…
In this paper we demonstrate experimentally that crystalline phases appear in amorphous titanium oxide upon processing with ultrafast laser pulses. Amorphous titanium thin films were produced by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and exposed to femtosecond laser pulses. Formation of rutile phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, Raman measurements and electron backscattering diffraction. A rang of processing parameters for the crystallization is reported and possible background mechanisms are discussed.
The structure of the first sharp diffraction peak (FSDP) of amorphous silicon (${\it a}$-Si) near 2 Angstrom$^{-1}$ is addressed with particular emphasis on the position, intensity, and width of the diffraction curve. By studying a number of continuous random network (CRN) models of ${\it a}$-Si, it is shown that the position and the intensity of the FSDP are primarily determined by radial atomic correlations in the amorphous network on the length scale of 15 Angstroms. A shell-by-shell analysis of the contribution from different radial shells reveals that the key contributions to the FSDP ori…
A method is suggested for estimation of structural properties of amorphous fullerene and its derivatives produced by vacuum annealing. The method is based on the fitting of the neutron or x-ray powder diffraction patterns for scattering wave vector's modulus in the range from few units to several tens of inverse nanometers. The respective inverse problem assumes that the structured component of a sample can be described with a limited number, Nstr, of candidate sp2 carbon structures (fullerenes, flat and curved flakes with graphene-like atom arrangement) of a limited number of atoms, Natom. Th…
Study of amorphous alumina coatings for next-generation nuclear reactors: hightemperature in-situ and post-mortem Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction
Amorphous silicon (a-Si) is a widely studied non-crystalline material, and yet the subtle details of its atomistic structure are still unclear. Here, we show that accurate structural models of a-Si can be obtained by harnessing the power of machine-learning algorithms to create interatomic potentials. Our best a-Si network is obtained by cooling from the melt in molecular-dynamics simulations, at a rate of 10$^{11}$ K/s (that is, on the 10 ns timescale). This structure shows a defect concentration of below 2% and agrees with experiments regarding excess energies, diffraction data, as well as $…
The microscopic structure of a new infrared-driven amorphous white-light-generating material was explored by X-ray diffraction, EXAFS and Reverse Monte Carlo simulation. In this material, structural disorder appears to be prerequisite for this nonlinear optical effect. The results are consistent with quantum chemical predictions, but it is also found that the molecular cores are distorted, which is identified as a crystallization inhibitor. Sulfur atoms thereby form a uniform vibrational network, which may be responsible for the high capability of the material to absorb infrared radiation.

Amorphous materials are integral part of todays technology, they commonly are performant and versatile in integration. Consequently, future applications increasingly aim to harvest the potential of the amorphous state. Establishing its structure-property relationship, however, is inherently challenging using diffraction-based techniques yet is extremely desirable for developing advanced functionalities. In this article, we introduce a set of transmission electron microscopy-based techniques to locally quantify the structure of a material. This unique approach allows to clearly identify the spa…
Germanium telluride (GeTe), a phase-change material, is known to exhibit four different structural phases: three at room temperature (one amorphous and two crystalline, $α$ and $γ$) and one at high temperature (crystalline $β$). Because transitions between the amorphous and crystalline phases lead to significant changes in material properties (e.g., refractive index and resistivity), GeTe has been investigated as a phase-change material for photonics, thermoelectrics, ferroelectrics, and spintronics. Consequently, the temperature-dependent phase transitions in GeTe have been studied for bulk a…
EXAFS, XRD and RMC studies of an Amorphous Ga$_{50}$Se$_{50}$ Alloy Produced by Mechanical Alloying
Germanium is an extremely important material used for numerous functional applications in many fields of nanotechnology. In this paper, we study the crystallization of amorphous Ge using atomistic simulations of critical nano-metric nuclei at high temperatures. We find that crystallization occurs by the recurrent transfer of atoms via a diffusive process from the amorphous phase into suitably-oriented crystalline layers. We accompany our simulations with a comprehensive thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of the growth process, which explains the energy balance and the interfacial growth veloci…
This paper addresses a difficult inverse problem that involves the reconstruction of a three-dimensional model of tetrahedral amorphous semiconductors via inversion of diffraction data. By posing the material-structure determination as a multi-objective optimization program, it has been shown that the problem can be solved accurately using a few structural constraints, but no total-energy functionals/forces, which describe the local chemistry of amorphous networks. The approach yields highly realistic models of amorphous silicon, with no or only a few coordination defects ($\le$ 1%), a narrow …
The growth of amorphous TiO2 and anisotropic-polycrystalline ZnO thin-films is studied by means of coarse-grained three-dimensional kinetic Montecarlo simulations under conditions typically encountered in Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition experiments. The approach developed considers fluctuations in the activation energy for surface diffusion of the coarse particles that are calculated on-the-fly and depends on the mesoscale local morphological/structural landscape. The basis of this approach --which is known to work well to simulate the growth of amorphous materials using a much simpl…
Microscopy and diffraction measurements are presented of ultrathin binary alloy films of ruthenium and molybdenum that are obtained by standard sputter deposition. For compositions close to Ru50Mo50, we find the films to be amorphous. The amorphicity of the films is accompanied by a significant reduction of the roughness with respect to the roughness of equally thick films of either ruthenium or molybdenum. We ascribe this to the absence of the grain structure that is characteristic of the polycrystalline films of the separate elements.
Amorphous silicon films prepared by electron beam evaporation have systematically and substantially greater atomic density for higher thickness, higher growth temperature, and slower deposition rate, reaching the density of crystalline Si when films of thickness greater than ~300 nm are grown at 425 $^{\circ}$C and at <1 $Å$/sec. A combination of spectroscopic techniques provide insight into atomic disorder, local strains, dangling bonds, and nanovoids. Electron diffraction shows that the short-range order of the amorphous silicon is similar at all growth temperatures, but fluctuation electron…
Amorphous phosphorus (a-P) has long attracted interest because of its complex atomic structure, and more recently as an anode material for batteries. However, accurately describing and understanding a-P at the atomistic level remains a challenge. Here we show that large-scale molecular-dynamics simulations, enabled by a machine learning (ML)-based interatomic potential for phosphorus, can give new insights into the atomic structure of a-P and how this structure changes under pressure. The structural model so obtained contains abundant five-membered rings, as well as more complex seven- and eig…

Exploiting the emerging nanoscale periodicities in epitaxial, single-crystal thin films is an exciting direction in quantum materials science: confinement and periodic distortions induce novel properties. The structural motifs of interest are ferroelastic, ferroelectric, multiferroic, and, more recently, topologically protected magnetization and polarization textures. A critical step towards heterostructure engineering is understanding their nanoscale structure, best achieved through real-space imaging. X-ray Bragg coherent diffractive imaging visualizes sub-picometer crystalline displacements…
The effect of silica-promotion on the reduction of iron oxides in hydrogen was investigated using in situ X-ray diffraction and aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy to understand the mechanism of reduction and the identity of the iron(II) silicate phase that has historically been designated as the cause of the iron-silica interaction in such materials. In the absence of a silica promoter the reduction of hematite to α-Fe proceeds via magnetite. Silica promoted amorphous iron oxide is reduced to α-Fe via stable magnetite and wüstite phases. During reduction of silica-promoted i…

We report here a study of reversible pressure-induced structural transformation between two amorphous forms of SO$_2$: molecular at pressures below 26 GPa and polymeric above this pressure, at temperatures of 77 - 300 K. The transformation was observed by Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell. The same phenomenon was also observed in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations where both forward and reverse transitions were detected, allowing to analyze in detail the atomic structure of both phases. The high-pressure polymeric amorphous form was found to consist mainly …
The ultra-long relaxation time of glass transition makes it difficult to construct atomic models of amorphous materials by conventional methods. We propose a novel method for building such atomic models using data assimilation method by simulated annealing with an accurately computed interatomic potential augmented by penalty from experimental data. The advantage of this method is that not only can it reproduce experimental data as the structure refinement methods like reverse Monte Carlo but also obtain the reasonable structure in terms of interatomic potential energy. In addition, thanks to …

Structural differences were investigated using X-ray scattering and EXAFS combined with molecular RMC. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning precession electron diffraction were used to understand specific structural differences on all length scales, from mesoscopic down to mutual molec…
We present an information-based total-energy optimization method to produce nearly defect-free structural models of amorphous silicon. Using geometrical, structural and topological information from disordered tetrahedral networks, we have shown that it is possible to generate structural configurations of amorphous silicon, which are superior than the models obtained from conventional reverse Monte Carlo and molecular-dynamics simulations. The new data-driven hybrid approach presented here is capable of producing atomistic models with structural and electronic properties which are on a par with…

Amorphous, glass, and glass-ceramic materials practically always include a significant number (more than eight) of crystalline phases, with the contents of the latter ranging from a few wt.% to several hundredths or tenths of wt.%. The study of such materials using the method of X-ray phase analysis faces difficulties, when determining the phase structure. In this work, we will develop a method for the analysis of the diffraction patterns of such materials, when diffraction patterns include X-ray lines, whose intensities are at the noise level. The identification of lines is based on the searc…
